Political, but not in a specific way?
I think the scariest thing in the current events is the AMOUNT of misinformation and fake news and how it becomes impossible to verify anything or even just get any proper information without having a lot of knowledge about critical thinking, follow at least 3-5 completely different news -media, and have the thinking skills required for a Master's degree.
And even with ALL OF THAT, it might atill be misinformation.
Just
Pure frustration.
(Not to mention that when someone makes a mistake, or change something, there's always someone who screenshot it and go "but you said...!")
Also bias and prejudice, also known as "I knew (x) did/didn't do it!" (Feelings aren't logic. Unfortunately, many people let the first run the show).

Thinking about the post on media and film distribution I added to yesterday, what I forgot to add is simply that a lot of you now spend the hours that you would have once spent on cinema and television on Tiktok and Reels and (to a degree) YouTube. If you know you spend 1-3 hours on Tiktok each day, well, in the 90s, nothing like that existed. You only had books, cinema, television, radio. So people weren't hyping memes and random dances and Good Emu Person and Shitty Emu Person etc. and everything folks talked about - even on early internet - when it came to mass media, centred on those specific forms of mass media.
Cinema will never ever be the same again so long as people give 12+ hours of their week to Tiktok / Instagram and similar sites, instead of cinema and television. You can't cry out for a golden age that's gone when it's gone because the audiences moved on. The fact is, one of the most common media watching memes on places like Tumblr is a version of 'everyone is recommending shows or movies to me and I don't have the time / energy / inclination to watch them.'
I'm part of this, I spend a lot more time on Tiktok than I do watching television or cinema, and this obviously only applies to the folks who do spend huge chunks of time scrolling through short pieces on the internet. And there's also nothing wrong with that until you go 'omg why aren't we getting shows like we used to / why is fandom so different now / why aren't we having these experiences anymore.'
You took the time and investment away, and that's why. It's way easier to get rabidly hyped in a fandom if you don't have Tiktok, or YouTube, or Instagram**, because what's left over (film, television, etc.) is all you have. And that's a pretty huge and significant reason why a) the budgets for film and TV are smaller (overall, it's similarly extreme on the other end, re: Sandman and Marvel etc. But I'm including everything here) and b) fandoms aren't as huge or long-lasting as they used to be.
I'm still noodling on this, and obviously there are a lot of factors going on here (many of which I went into yesterday, it's so fucking opaque to say 'we don't have films like we used to' because like, we do, people just don't know where to find them anymore, what we don't have is indie films hitting the zeitgeist like they used to, which is a different issue and it's multifactorial, and some of it is that people are now screaming about Emmanuel the Emu instead of the latest indie movie that came out). But I do think where Tiktok is making billions off of people, those billions are not going to more 'classic' forms of mass media.
If you want it, you have to give it your time. It's that simple.
** (Obviously these things can also be used as tools for fandom, it's just so much of fandom has also now ported over to transformative works around real people (i.e. dueting / stitching / replying / remixing / meme-ing etc. are all a form of transformative work that take time and labour, they're just different to what we classically think of as transformative works) and/or Tiktok fandom moves really fast by the nature of the format).

I am so *incredibly* sick of people just randomly blaming everything they don’t like on the internet - or, worse yet, just mindlessly scaremongering about the internet and its “effect on society” without the slightest idea of the actual precedents there are in history for the internet.
A really solid example is the invention and popularisation of the moveable-type printing press in the early modern period. Its effect on mass communication and the democratisation of knowledge and communication is very comparable.
It’s pretty reasonable to say that the main reason the Protestant Reformation happened when it did was because Martin Luther, unlike, say, William Wytcliffe, a 14th century English proto-Protestant, had access to the printing press and could put out pamphlets, meaning his evolving ideas could reach a potentially huge - and *very interested* - mass audience.
This wasn’t even limited by literacy rates, which were growing at the time, because there was also a huge culture of reading out loud and debating in most urban centres at the time, particularly in Germany and the Low Countries. And, given how quick and easy pamphlets were to print and distribute, it didn’t take long for pamphleteering wars to break out. I entirely stopped giving any credence to people claiming the internet was causing “the death of civility in society” after I read one of Thomas More’s (yes, the martyr *Saint* Thomas More, who is somehow *still* regarded as a stately and dignified man of conscience) flame war replies to Luther where he said “your shitty mouth, truly the shit-pool of all shit, all the muck which your damnable rottenness has vomited up”.

AC-a-a-a-a-B, screamed the goat
again, we see the police PR machine & a complicit press present the innocuous, bumbling barney fife ‘we’re here to protect’ trope.
the ubiquitous coverage of the screaming goat has reached an international audience [if the BBC counts in that regard].
it reminds me of the ‘ah, look! cops dance with ice cream’ which should have been ‘two scoops of fuck you.’
__
one of the more recent and disgusting examples of police PR/media collaboration has been the ‘viral’ PR: ‘Police dog in Wyandotte accused of stealing fellow officer's lunch.’
this ‘story’ originated from a facebook post by the Wyandotte PD, with an accompanying image edited to appear as a mugshot of a black police dog – named ‘Officer ICE.’
however, i found this posted on a ABC affiliate news website, on the same page as an article about Tyre Nichols’ family pleading for justice and calls for the bodycam footage to be released.
Tumblr media
__
the timing and content of these press releases is no coincidence.
on august 1 2016, within weeks after the series of murders by police of Delrawn Small, Alton Sterling and Philando Castille, the cop PR machine rolled out #copsgiveouticecream.
one particular headline — ‘these cops pranked drivers by giving them ice cream instead of tickets’ — fell under the ‘feel good’ category, much like ‘officer ice’ and case of the screaming goat.
Tumblr media
text beneath the image reads: "You can see the sense of relief when the officers explain this ‘violation’ to the anxious drivers who all got a big laugh out of it."
i can see intimidation, fear, injustice…
‘no cameras!’ — nor accountability
social media has changed the playing field in the propaganda war for policing. like in the instances of feel good news, cops only like social media when it works in their favor.
the fbi has warned about ‘cop baiting,’ ‘viral attack’ and potential liability. [Social Media and Law Enforcement: Potential Risks; leb.fbi.gov]
unsurprisingly, this particular article expresses an overarching sense of fear and need for control:
Empowered by social media, cop baiting presents a crisis for law enforcement. Questionable videos of police officers are popular on sites, such as YouTube, and can be financially rewarding to malefactors who file claims or lawsuits. For some individuals, a citation or jail time is worthwhile if a cash payoff results. Cop baiting could become so common that officers may not know whether they are facing a situation that is legitimate, staged, or exaggerated for someone else’s benefit. This puts officers’ personal and professional well-being at stake.
so strange, their fave defense for surveillance [search, et al] isn’t mentioned: ‘if you’re not doing anything wrong, why worry…’
copspeak + providing those good feels
i posted the link back in 2016, but i find it’s still relevant:
Copspeak: 7 Ways Journalists Use Police Jargon to Obscure the Truth [fair.org]
FAIR’s CopSpeak series is good for examining the media-PR symbiosis:
“The linguistic gymnastics needed to report on police violence without calling up images of police violence is a thing of semantic wonder."
privatization of public policy has helped drive much of this. [Meet the Company That Writes the Policies That Protect Cops; motherjones.com], [Police Policy For Sale; theappeal.org/].
the lexipol rabbithole can take you through an insular cop-cult[-ure] & convenient shopping for all of your militarized force needs.
‘Police Chief Magazine’ run by a 503c lobbying group, International Association of Chiefs of Police [IACP], reveals some PR tactics in ‘Media Coverage: When It Doesn’t Work Well… and When It Does’ [policechiefmagazine.org]
The Secrets to Success “It is the role of the public information office to push the positive stories to the media,” says Sergeant John Roth, Glendale Police Department’s public information officer (PIO). His office publicizes the department’s Coffee with a Cop events, as well as other newsworthy items, such as when major cases are solved. …
it is imperative to develop a rapport with media representatives. He makes a point of meeting with them and establishing relationships built on trust.
‘trust us,’ said at gunpoint…
[btw, national police week 2023 has begun]

Misconceptions of Mass Communication
Tumblr media
The Mass Communication course is not known by many. I myself never really knew this course existed but found myself enrolling and enjoying the course. It is my true calling and my passion for I aspire to be a Side Court Reported for the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) ⋆·˚ ༘
As I enrolled in Bachelor of Arts in Communication, misconceptions from different people were said and it truly took a toll on me since not many understand this course.
I am here to educate and broaden the minds of the ones who chose to keep a close mind about Mass Communication.
The common misconceptions that people assume immediately are;
Mass communication is not an intelligent or hardworking field
You or anyone else are not less intelligent or hardworking because you are taking mass communication. It takes a lot of effort, ingenuity, and hard work to achieve, just like other courses.
People who want to disparage the field frequently use the implication that only stupid or slothful children would ever choose mass communication. That is not accurate at all! Students in mass communication are just as intelligent and devoted as those in other well-liked fields and what could appear to be "serious" courses. The height of ignorance is insulting someone's work or intelligence because you don't comprehend how or what is being taught, so you shouldn't allow it bother you or make you feel inferior.
“Mass Commportable sa Bahay”
This is one of the major communication misconceptions that people think of the Communication program. The people who usually think this way are the people who do not study under the program or just someone who has very little idea what Communication is in the first place.
They mentioned that it's a program that can be comfortably done at home, after all it's only about vlogging, reporting and broadcasting, which can be done within the household. But, they fail to realize that the Communication program is not as easy as they think. In the media industry, it's a must for a person to have a variety set of skills in which they can learn in studying communication. Communicators are trained to be well-rounded and skilled in various tasks like editing, writing, speaking, and even acting. In line with this, the communication program opens a lot of doors for different careers. So, it's truly a misconception that the Communication Program is easy and "mass commportable sa bahay." Communicators receive intensive training and studying to become a good media practitioner in the future.
All communication students are extroverts
“You’re an introvert, are you sure you want to study Communications?” This is a typical question that introverts usually encounter especially when they are considering to choose this as a career. The perceptions that introverts cannot or would not fit in this career or become successful professionals in this industry is incorrect. Equal opportunity exist for both, skills and hard work is your investment in this career. Even though it is expected to speak in front of groups of people, being an extrovert is not the key in order to succeed.
Tumblr media
Students studying mass communication acquire a wide range of useful abilities in addition to a wealth of information that they must continuously be aware of. In the field of mass communication, education never ends. With new inventions and technology appearing on the scene, there is always more to learn!
Additionally, if you have any remaining reservations, consider these well-known and accomplished mass communication professionals that put in a lot of effort to become successful.

Hypodermic Needle Theory
This blog post is for a Mass Communications class assignment where the students are learning about the hypodermic needle theory. This theory is based on the idea that audiences are very susceptible to influence by the mass media.
You can watch this video to learn more about this theory.
Advertising and Children's Television
I remember hearing that Gen X is less susceptible to marketing than earlier generations. The argument was rooted in the fact that we were bombarded so often with advertising as children that we have become somewhat immune to it as adults. I learned that two of my favorite TV shows, Transformers and G.I. Joe, were created by toy companies to generate demand. Why settle for commercial breaks when you can have the entire episode to sell your toys?
Tumblr media
My son, Sebastian, is a toddler, and I watch a lot of Blippi. Blippi might promote a kid-friendly destination or garbage truck toy, but he seems more benign (annoying at times, but at least I don’t feel like I am being pitched a product).
News Sources and Generation Differences
Generational marketing has been around for a while, and I remember lectures about it when I was in business school.
Generational marketing has been around for a while, and I remember lectures about it when I was in business school.
When completing the readings for this assignment, I had challenges relating to the hypodermic needle theory. For starters, there are so many sources to get your media.
Growing up, my father would watch the nightly news. In my 30s, I started listening to NPR, and now in my "F Years," I scroll through the news feature on Facebook to see what I might have missed on NPR. My husband is a millennial, and in addition to NPR, he favors podcasts such as "Pod Save America." I was amazed to learn that almost 25% of Americans rely on podcasts for their news.
Tumblr media
Facebook and Social Media
I decided to go with Tumblr for this blogging assignment as I figured it would be more akin to Facebook, which I check multiple times a day.
Tumblr media
Facebook is often in the news, often accused of fueling political polarization and extremism. When there is so much polarization, it would seem implausible for everyone to receive their information from the same source, let alone agree with a singular message. Facebook seems to have figured out the algorithm to feed both ends of the political spectrum with what users want to see and hear.
Suppose the hypodermic needle theory were to be updated. A better analogy might be that the needle is filled with dopamine or other pleasure-inducing substance. The one receiving the needle is not passive but willingly feeding an addiction for media.

Resilence
Tumblr media
Project description: For the course Mass communication we had to make a mask as a part of mass communication. It was a group task and we had to follow the curriculum Integration theme. The theme for that semester was Resilience and we made our mask according to the theme. The mask making also included the task of writing a report on the mask that we made.
Project justification: The topic we chose for making the mask had to be related to the CI theme of that semester which was Resilience. We tried to show that how to be resilient when someone is bullied.
The mask we created:
Tumblr media
Essay on the project:
As a task in term of resilient we are going to represent that how to be resilient when someone is bullied.
Simply bullying means dominate others. If we describe it, it becomes that dominating someone by force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or through aggressive behavior.
In this case if a person who is bullied he tries to resist those who used to bully him/her, they face more bullying. Cause a bully person wins when that bullied person feels sick.
So, it would be better if they just ignore the bully person by being normal towards that bully and by just being not so serious to that person. After All he’s a bully.
After making a Face mask we are going to paint it in brown and gray with a smiley face. Then we are going to draw some bully lines on the gray part, and some not being serious lines on the brown side. And yeah, After all gray is the color of isolation.
Self-reflection: through this project I learned –
how to make a mask
how to use masks a method of communication
effective use of mass communication

Characteristics of Mass Communication
Tumblr media
Mass communication is a powerful and influential form of communication that involves disseminating information, ideas, and messages to a large and diverse audience through various mediums. It plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, influencing societal norms, and facilitating the exchange of information on a massive scale.
What is Mass Communication?
Mass communication refers to the process of transmitting information to a large audience through various forms of media, such as newspapers, magazines, television, radio, internet, and social media. It involves the dissemination of messages from a single source to multiple receivers simultaneously.
Key elements of mass communication include:
Sender: The entity or organization that creates and sends the message.
Message: The content or information being transmitted to the audience.
Channel: The medium through which the message is transmitted, such as television, radio, print, or digital platforms.
Receiver: The individuals or groups who receive and interpret the message.
Feedback: The response or reaction of the audience to the message, which can be immediate or delayed.
Noise: Any interference or distortion that may affect the transmission or reception of the message.
Professionals in the field of mass communication include journalists, broadcasters, public relations specialists, advertising executives, media planners, and social media managers. They work in various industries, including journalism, advertising, public relations, broadcasting, and digital media, to create, distribute, and analyze media content.
8 Characteristics of Mass Communication
1. Diverse and Large Audience
One of the defining characteristics of mass communication is its ability to reach a vast and heterogeneous audience simultaneously. The audience is typically dispersed geographically and consists of individuals from various backgrounds, demographics, and interests. This diverse audience is often anonymous and unknown to the communicator.
2. Use of Mediated Channels
Mass communication relies on mediated channels or mass media to transmit messages. These channels include traditional media such as television, radio, newspapers, and magazines, as well as modern digital platforms like the internet, social media, and mobile applications. The use of these mediated channels allows for the widespread dissemination of information and messages.
