Please forgive me for accepting asks, and then being too tired to answer them 💜
18. best character arc and why (genuinely this is just an excuse for a long ass character analysis post)
I could make this about BJ's arc, I really could, but that's a can of worms I don't wish to open, so I'm going to say Charles (and it's a bit under a read more because I got rambly. I LOVE Charles).
I once texted my best friend about him like "remember when Republicans could be decent human beings" (I was mostly kidding).
I love that bastard man!!! He's SUCH a douchebag at the start of the show, but he lets you know right away that he doesn't have to put up with this, he doesn't want to, he's not staying, he doesn't give a damn about anyone... but he's also not like Frank.
He's the opposite of Frank actually. He's an extremely talented surgeon, very rich and cultured... except where Frank would've fallen for the snake in the bed and flipped about it, Charles just puts it right back on Hawkeye (it's the narrative foil of it all).
And as the show proceeds, we see him going from not giving a damn about anything except his surgical prowess and getting back to Tokyo to someone who genuinely cares about the other people at the 4077.
We see him go from someone who will willingly scam the locals in a scrip exchange to being a more generous soul... he's just hiding it.
One of my favourite runs of episodes - and not even like necessarily Charles-centric - are from... about "Mr and Mrs Who" through to "Morale Victory". We see so much character development from Charles in just that run of episodes alone! We see so much change and upheaval - he thinks he's gotten married, he has to reflect on Honoria's impending marriage (boorishly, since it's Charles), he becomes invested in the little girl's plight in "Yessir", immediately after DEAL WITH HAVING THE MUMPS AND THE POSSIBILITY OF NEVER HAVING HIS OWN KIDS.... oh and then we get that absolute heartbreaker of an episode in "Morale Victory".
And through it all, we see him learning to care about the others, to see them as his friends, his family - no matter how hard he tries to keep them out! And as we learn, he isn't really great at connecting to other people anyway, so it's probably easier not to even try.
He is crying at the thought of Potter being ill in "Old Soldiers". He defends Margaret from the aide in "Are You Now, Margaret?". And then of course, there's the peak, where he's there for Hawkeye in "Sons and Bowlers".
And the whole time, he's changing from the stuffed shirt we meet in season 6. Sure, he's still prickly and abrasive, but over the course of the show, he opens up, and accepts the 4077 as his home. He gives up the chance to go back to Tokyo if it means it'll hurt Margaret!
But even as he slowly gives bits and pieces of himself to other people, there are still so many things he doesn't say. Like his brother!! Please get that man a therapist! He's not a stuffed shirt (well yes he is), he's an extremely lonely rich kid who suffered a tragedy at a young age, and who was raised by distant if well-meaning parents.
And of course all of this culminates in the tragedy of his finale storyline. His refuge from the war, from everything, gone. And he can never be the man who went to Tokyo for a cushy position to sit out the war. We know it, and he knows it. And after all the suffering he's seen, he's not going to be able to just fit right back into that high class society where the worst issues were his relatives being charged with tax fraud, or serving the wrong wine with the soup.
(This is why my post war Charles is slowly rehabilitating into a better and more democratic fellow but I digress).
Do you think he can stand up now and say "Immigration is a problem my family has dealt with since we came to this country" (as he said in season 6)? I don't.
We have the writers and we have DOS to thank for the brilliant complex character that is Charles. I think he's one of the deepest characters on the show, and I love him so deeply... even if I want to sometimes beat him up in a denny's parking lot at 3 AM.

Hi! I just binge read all of bicycle boy and I'm fucking hooked i love it so much but i have a huge question.....How do you pronounce Machk?
I love to learn about languages so I have done a lot of research to find the answer, but...I am still not sure! I confess I chose this name from a random list when I was a teenager. There’s a lot of misinformation around Native American names, so if anybody knows this better, or if I make any mistakes, please let me know.
Machk is part native, and I wanted his name to reflect that. Initially I thought the name was Algonquin but later learned that’s a misattribution, and it is actually a Lenape word part of the Algonquian language family. For those who don’t know, “Algonquian” is commonly mistaken to be a single tribe, and while there is one in Canada called the Algonquin/Algonkin, Algonquian is the name for dozens of tribes that speak related languages.
Now back to Machk. Machk (or Mauch) seems to only appear in this spelling in books written by settlers (1) (2) about the Lenape language, so its accuracy comes into question. The name also comes up in a bunch of places in Pennsylvania, where we find a mountain ridge, creek, reservoir, lake, switchback railway, and park all named Mauch Chunk (bear mountain). This leads me to believe that Machk/Mauch is an anglicisation of the Lenape word Màxkw [click to hear pronunciation], which means bear. It sounds a bit like ma-hwuh.
There is a character in the Canadian historical drama show Frontier named Machk, and I watched it purely to see how they said his name. For research! (For those interested: it’s on netflix & the first two seasons were p good, but it drops the ball on the third). The natives in Frontier are Cree, and the Cree language is in the same family as Lenape. I can’t find a clip online but they said it softly, like Mashk, and outsiders said Mok with a hard K. This is just a TV show, so I don’t know its accuracy.
I decided to go with the Cree pronunciation, it’s the easiest to say. All these years I’ve really butchered it though. I read it like Ma-chi-kuh.
Indian Local Names by Stephen Gill, 1885
Words, Phrases, and Short Dialogues, in the Language of the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware Indians by Rev. John Heckewelder, 1819
Note: I don’t advocate for the wording used by those idiot 19th century settlers, but the names of the books are here for archival purposes.

M*A*S*H asks: 7 & 13.
Thank you!
best look from the Klinger Collection
I'm partial to fatigues with earrings or a hat, I kinda like the casual accessories even when he's otherwise not dressed up, but yk I think I gotta go with this riding outfit from Big Mac bc it's so good and striking
Tumblr media
or his wedding dress in Springtime because I just love that he got married in a dress, come on. That's above and beyond the section 8.
favorite gay Hawkeye moment (you can’t say the entire show it’s against the mashks rules)
Impossible to choose just one.
"Somebody's gonna have to get me pregnant first," is incredible, it's impossible for me to take that line as anything but Hawkeye blatantly, blatantly, screamingly loudly hitting on BJ to find out if he's dtf. Like that line is, "I'm not married but I am very easy and I like dick, hint hint." Come on.
"I must be obvious or something," from Dr. Pierce Mr. Hyde is just good. Like, it's funny because it's true, and he's also at the point of losing touch with reality there so it's incredibly easy to take as less of a joke and more of a wry unconsidered statement.
Hawkeye racing to the airport after he gets Trapper's kiss, enough said.
Hawkeye repeating the Tolstoy was flexible joke to the lit nerd in Love Story and getting total confusion back. Like I've said it before but it's one thing for a character to make a bi joke, it's a whole nother level for him to make the same bi joke twice to confused stares. That's just an accurate depiction of what it's like to hang out with straight people.
Agh there are so many good moments, I want to list like 50! Ok lightning round: Radar's "that's not funny" in response to Hawkeye's "yes, are you?" in 5 O'Clock Charlie because it sounds like rare acknowledgement that the jokes are dicy; George coming out to him; this; RJ Hardlidge named nudist of the year; "they say that to everybody," from Operation Noselift; the anecdote about Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas apropros of nothing; and every interaction he has with Tommy

3. Most underrated character
Ginger my beloved. She has such a sweet relationship with Hawkeye and Trapper, and it's a crime that she was dropped back in season 3.
8. Favorite "Hawkeye has a mental breakdown" episode
I'm going to cheat and answer with one from the Henry era and one from the Potter era since they have different approaches to his breakdowns. My favorite from the Henry era is of course "Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde," and my favorite from the Potter era is "Hawk's Nightmare."
10. Unpopular opinion
I don't get the hype for BJ I'm sorry. I think his writing is pretty decent, and I like his development and that the show gradually brings out the worst in him, but I also feel like he's not that special. We just don't know much about his backstory, and it seems like a lot of the widely accepted ~*~fanon~*~ about his backstory was just stolen from Margaret's backstory.
13. Favorite gay Hawkeye moment (you can't say the entire show it's against the mashks rules)
Answered here but also the "You married?" // "Someone's gonna have to get me pregnant first" exchange in "Welcome to Korea" is an all-timer

ABBY 1 13 16 !! :)
B!!! all of these are heavy hitters so I’m just going to go with the first one off the top of my head let’s go!!
1. favorite episode
mash episodes are like children so I’m going to highlight one of my favorites and we got to go with a classic Dr. Pierce Mr. Hyde. what an episode!!! There are already many instances of me going insane over this episode on this blog so I will be brief. I should really watch it again soon :-)
13. favorite gay Hawkeye moment (you can’t say the entire show it’s against the mashks rules)
once again got to go with a classic which is NOT the entirety of the show but instead the entirety of Welcome to Korea. Some specific highlights are: trapper leaving a kiss and hawkeye immediately chasing after him, “you’d have to get me pregnant first”, the whole of the bar scene, the whole of Rosie’s bar scene, breaking down laughing at drunk BJ’s calling Frank ferret face, and many more!
16. favorite Alan Alda episode
once again going straight off the cuff with dreams cause truly, who besides Mr. Alda could deliver that???

14 and 15 for the mashks!
14- Thoughts on the finale.
I think they did a great job with it. Personally though, I think the time capsule episode (the actual last episode filmed) would have been better as part of the actual finale, especially considering that the pilot episode began with the words “Korea 1950- A hundred years ago”. I have a theory that the show itself is actually a time capsule being opened sometime in the 2050’s.
15- favorite behind the scenes moment/story/clip from the gag reel
So many! But the idea of David Ogden Stiers riding around on a skateboard is one that really makes me laugh. I wish there was a photo or video of him doing it.

Hi! For mashks:
1, 2, 11, 14
favorite episode - Oh, so many. Deal Me Out for comedy. Life Time for drama. Alan Alda and Walter Dishell use the gimmick to give each main character a moment – Mulcahy's prayer, Margaret's objection to Hawkeye telling her not to sterilize an instrument, BJ's discomfort with waiting for a man to die, Charles pointing out how much blood Hawkeye is using on a single patient and then offering his own. Kellye and Igor get good lines too. “If I take out the ice then people will taste the drinks.” The relationship between the dead soldier and his friend is touching. Also if you watch Charles during the rigatoni/eggroll bit he wraps his patient's wrist so gently and carefully.
favorite character I answered before.
best friendship dynamic - All of them! Hawkeye and Mulcahy are interesting and unusual. You might not expect a Catholic priest and an anti-establishment skirt-chaser to admire each other so much but they do and it's beautiful. I also like Hawkeye and Margaret, and Margaret and Charles, and Charles and Hawkeye.
The finale I'll get to tomorrow.

3 for mashks!
😳 idk how out of or in touch with the fandom I am so it might not be the hottest take lol
Non main cast wise there are so many I can think of. Sidney, Ginger, Kellye, Rizzo, Igor, Oliver, Ugly John, Goldman. I really wish they had gotten more screen time because theyre all such genuinely interesting characters on their own.
From the main cast I’d have to say Charles (im biased though, I know) but hear me out. Charles had more character development and was just generally being a “better” character than Frank show wise. But through all of that I still feel like he was filling in for the role of butt monkey in Frank’s absence some episodes. It also absolutely kills me that he never really connects in any meaningful way to the other characters. Sure, he has his moments with Hawk and Klinger and even Margaret, but most episodes he feels (and acts) like an outsider. And this may sound harsh but it just feels like no one really cares about Charles all that much. I get that he tries to isolate himself so it would make it hard to reach out but I can’t really remember a lot of times where people make the effort!
Sorry this got into a ramble I might make another post about this though I feel so strongly about my little Meow Meow
