looking through the prism of time #women & #LGBTQ #celebrity #eccentrics of the #Baroque such as #shakespeare #MaryWroth #SirFrancisBacon & #InigoJones it’s easy to view them as the glittering stars of the age... & they were! Certainly in the Stuart Court but even monarchs cannot prevent bullying & abuse - some royals have even been victims - King James I (when still King James VI of Scotland) was bullied & abused over his romantic relationships with men - in 1582 he was kidnapped & tortured by Presbyterian Puritans for 9months in order to force him to end his relationship with Esme Stuart - Duke of Lennox. As anyone who has ever been a victim of abuse knows, one of the many weapons in the abuser’s Arsenal are the means to break down their victim’s faith in humanity & their right to safety. As a victim of physical & emotional abuse as a child & an adult, I understand the stigma, embarrassment & shame of victimhood. In 1623 King Charles I wrote “Cruelty is the weapon of cowards” as an annotation in #SirFrancisBacons last book “New Atlantis” - a utopian thesis on humanity which Bacon wrote after his #persecution #blackmail & sham trail triggered by his #gay relationships in the Jacobean #royalcourt - in New Atlantis Bacon addressed bullying & bigotry & invented the term “masculine love” to replace the derogatory terms Ganymede & sodomite which at the time were the only words to describe #gay relationships - That was 500 years ago!
