Mary, Queen of Scots
Mary, Queen of Scots was the queen of both Scotland (r. 1542-1567) and briefly, France (r. 1559-1560). Obliged to flee Scotland, the queen was imprisoned for 19 years by Elizabeth I of England (r. 1558-1603) and finally executed for treason on 8 February 1587.

MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS
MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS
1542-1587
Mary was 6-days old when her father James V of Scotland died and she gained the Scottish throne. Scotland was governed by regents, including her mother, Mary of Guise (who was related to Henry VII). Henry VIII wanted Mary to be brought up in the English court in order to marry his son Edward, however her mother refused.
Mary moved to France to live with Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici, and in 1558, she married their son and heir Francis, the Dauphin. Her husband died in 1560 and she returned to Scotland during a time of political and religious unrest. Mary was Catholic, but her kingdom was now run by Protestants.
She married her half-cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley in 1565, who had Tudor royal blood, she was in love with him and attracted to his good looks; however, he abused her physically and mentally. When Mary was 6-months pregnant, he and his friends burst into her room. One held a pistol to Mary and stabbed Mary’s friend David Rizzio to death. Mary never forgave Darnley and wanted out of the marriage. She wrote to Elizabeth I about what had taken place. Elizabeth I replied that if she had been in that situation, she ‘would have taken her husband’s dagger and stabbed him with it.’
In 1567, Darnley’s home was destroyed by an explosion and he was found murdered in the garden. Mary and James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, were both believed to have been behind his death but he was acquitted in 1567.
That same year, Bothwell kidnapped (and possibly raped Mary) and they were then wed. This was a disaster for Mary, she was forced to abdicate in favour of her son James VI (1-years-old) and they were both imprisoned. She attempted to take back her throne, after failing to do so, she fled and wanted to gain help from Elizabeth I.
There were tensions between Mary and Elizabeth, as Mary had once publicly stated that she was the true Queen of England, and not Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a Protestant and Mary was a Catholic, which made Mary a threat to the English throne. Elizabeth had Mary placed under house arrest at numerous castles over England, and after 18 years of being Elizabeth’s prisoner, Mary was found guilty of conspiring to have Elizabeth assassinated so she could take her throne. Her son James, who was a Protestant, didn’t defend his mother. Mary was beheaded in 1586, aged 62

Linlithgow Palace
James I ordered work on a palace to begin in 1424, following a fire that severely damaged the earlier residence. The elegant, new ‘pleasure palace’ became a welcome rest stop for royals on the busy road between Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle.
Mary, Queen of Scots, was born on 8th of December 1542 at Linlithgow Palace, to King James V and his French second wife, Mary of Guise. Mary was baptised at the nearby Church of St Michael shortly after she was born. On 14th December, six days after her birth, she became Queen of Scotland when her father died.
The palace fell quickly into decline when James VI (son of Mary) moved the royal court to London in 1603, following his coronation as James I of England.
The palace’s north quarter, which probably housed the queen’s apartment where Mary was born, fell to the ground in 1607. It was rebuilt around 1620, on the orders of James VI. The Duke of Cumberland’s army destroyed most of the palace buildings by burning in January 1746.

Mary Queen of Scots House, Jedburgh, Scottish Borders.
This beautiful tower house was built in the 16th century. It is said that Mary, Queen of Scots lived in this house in 1566 for a short time after she returned from France.
Today it is a very interesting museum about the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Really worth to visit, not only for Mary fans.

THE ALHAMBRA PALACE AT SUNSET...
A tender, mid September twilight glances against the towering, tremendous ramparts of Granada's storied Alhambra Palace in Southern Andalucia.
This last, Moorish stronghold eventually succumbed, sans bloodshed, to the advancing forces of the Spanish Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella.
Their daughter, Catherine of Aragon, would go on to become the first wife of King Henry VIII. Of six children conceived over the course of their twenty two year long marriage, only one- the Princess Mary- would survive into adulthood.
Catherine herself was ruthlessly usurped in favour of Anne Boleyn. She bore the charmless old brute another daughter, Elizabeth.
Mary eventually ascended to the throne as Queen Mary I, and became the infamous 'Bloody Mary' of historic legend. She, in turn, married King Phillip II of Spain. That marriage was at best fitful, and at worst fruitless.
On Mary's death, Elizabeth took the throne. A marriage proposal from the newly widowed Phillip was curtly rejected by the new Queen. Phillip simmered with quiet, silent rage.
Elizabeth's hand was eventually forced into the tragic execution of her Catholic doppelganger, Mary, Queen of Scots. Stung to self righteous indignation, Phillip sent the Spanish Armada to subdue Britain.
A combination of better cannonballs, more agile ships and some truly terrifying wind and waves all conspired to send most of it to the bottom...
