I love that everyone in TMA is just. Unremarkable. Jon isnt a heroic character; he's self-loathing and depressed and he exhibits the same self-pity as I do when I'm self-loathing and depressed. He doesn't stand out for his strength of will or quick-thinking or virtue. He's a good person but he stops trying to stay human when it gets uncomfortable. He's everything that a regular person is when theyre trapped in a horrible situation and it's ugly and insufferable and Real.

I’m so obsessed with how Martin Blackwood casts himself as Pylades/Horatio/Samwise Gamgee, deciding early on that his role within the narrative is to Be There for Jon as he descends into tragedy and that he can’t really affect the narrative otherwise. He doesn’t fully consider the consequences of his actions because he’s so confident that he doesn’t matter enough to impact the events around him. He hurts people because he doesn’t think he has the power to hurt people. His fatal flaw is his absolute conviction in his own unimportance. WHAT a character

martin/elias is an absolutely hilarious ship if you ignore the angst potential because like. they would outwardly look like a genuinely loving relationship but they're playing 4d chess mentally the whole time. martin's doing his whole innocent and caring sweetheart act to manipulate jonah. jonah's doing his whole boring and non-threatening manager act to manipulate martin. it's like a fake dating trope but both of them think they're fooling the other into thinking it's real

Look, I love Jon as much as the next person but I think some of you have gone so far along the ‘Jon is a sad little man who did nothing wrong’ route that you’ve genuinely forgotten all the times he held power in a situation or like. Made a decision that hurt people

"Guess we should see what we came here for?" John offered, leading the way, "think the library is back here? Ah!" He flicked on a lightswitch behind a pair of double doors ... and a . "WHOA!!!!" Slipped out of their mouths simultaneously ... jaws dropping. As the darkened warehouse before them flickered to life, row ... by illuminated row ... Revealing hundreds ... if not thousands ... NO ... HUNDREDS of thousands!!! Of stories ... . Written about ... them? . John winked at Sherlock. Before dashing ahead in a mad chase. Each grabbing up several volumes apiece and meeting to read a few pages ... . "Look at this one!" . "John - you won't believe-!" "Sherlock!" "John!" . "This is-" "-I'm taking this one!" "This is brilliant!" . "We're in a sci-fi!" "oooh an epic!" "OHmyGOD!" John's giggling could be heard a few rows down, and Sherlock tucked another in his pocket and swung around the shelving to peruse over John's shoulder. His jaw dropped.
This is an excerpt from this brilliant fic written by @helloliriels, you can read it completely here (( my gift to you, sweetie, I LOVED TO READ IT!! ))
And... this is also my tribute and gratitude to all the wonderful writers, illustrators, digital retouchers, and GIF makers in this glorious fandom, to which I've been very attached for almost a year :)

I've been thinking a lot about Jon and Martin's dynamic in s5 and how devastatingly sad and cute it is and how they each keep each other grounded but also how sometimes I find myself irritated when Martin gives Jon a hard time for being an avatar and knowing things but tbh. it's so understandable when you think of his nature and how much I can relate to him. I mean he is so Lonely aligned so of course you have the whole Lonely-Eye opposing each other thing going on but also when you have the thoughts that for a long time have been with him (and probably still are), the concept of the only person that stays with you and which whom you literally are in a state of constant fear, dread and uncertainty paired with extreme fear of being left - the possibilty of them knowing these thoughts becomes unbearable. And so he lashes out and reacts with anger or irritation. When I'm having particularly severe depressive episodes I would rather die than tell some of the people close to me the thoughts I'm having. (which. for the record. isn't healthy at all!! You should always be communicating and talk about the stuff that's going on. Just saying that that's how I personally feel.) I guess what I'm saying is that neither of them is perfect and that they both have so much shit going on so that inherently their relationship is complicated because it'a also very fresh, but ultimatively they are each others anchors in a hostile world. Climbing the walls I need to rotate them in my mind forever

My own personal Jmart and Lonelyeyes hc parallels and comparisons (because it’s this or Another fic) Many words under the cut
-Tw abusive relationship
-The Lonely as an allegory for depression
-Non consensual mind reading
*mind reading*
-Jon actively tries to avoid, and in most cases succeeds in avoiding, reading Martin’s mind. It’s a clear boundary in their relationship
-Elias actively attempts to see inside Peter’s head. It’s only Peter’s strong connection to the lonely that keeps him out and in some cases where he burnt out/hurt he just can’t. Big angst potential, Very Unhealthy
-I think Martin doesn’t do the whole ‘I want you to look inside my head and see my true feelings as an act of love’ thing. He trusts Jon to know how true it is when he tells him he loves him. He knows Jon might not believe him with certain things, and that that kind of thing should be up to him, not to Beholding. This (in my opinion) is healthy
-Elias doesn’t trust shit. I hc him as secretly paranoid as hell. The nature of the lonely makes things kinda fuzzy when he tries to Look at them which drives him crazy. And Peter Is manipulative. He Does lie. So it’s almost impossible for either of them to know when the other is being genuine. Again very fun to write, Very Unhealthy. So Peter does open his mind to Elias when he wants him to trust him, and Elias just doesn’t. He has no idea if Peter’s somehow tricked Beholding or is Very Good At Lying or anything- there’s never any certainty
*Compelling*
-As a rule Jon tries his hardest not to compel Martin. Martin tried it once to see if he would be able to read poetry aloud more fluently and Hated it. So yeah never again.
-Elias doesn’t like compelling Peter. He’s more into the observing side of Beholding, so actual confrontation is more difficult. More than that he hates it when Peter resists, but tells him of his own free will anyway. This is one Peter hasn’t asked him not to do, but still actively resists.
*Disappearing*
-Martin will not send Jon into the Lonely. He occasionally disappears himself, but knows Jon will find him no matter what. They’re working on it together.
-Most conflict ends with Peter vanishing into the Lonely. He doesn’t send Elias there because it feels like pushing someone else into your room and slamming the door on them? If that makes sense. It’s his space to torture people he doesn’t deem quite as real as Elias.
*Memory loss*
-As far as I’m aware Martin would not be powerful enough to have this power. If he did I don’t think he’d use it
-Having said that inducing memory loss is tied to domains not Avatars, but I’m giving it to Peter for angst reasons
-Peter doesn’t actually use it on Elias. He sure as hell thinks about it, about starting over and pretending he’s still the original Elias (whole other can of headcannon worms), but he won’t. I think he used it on original Elias for some time to hide the fact he was an avatar/isolate him for his own purposes
*Non Avatar related section*
-Jmart do at home dates. Sure they go out places sometimes but outside is tiring as hell. They prefer reading or cooking together and watching weird documentaries
-Lonelyeyes don’t really do dates. Their idea of a bonding moment is burying a body in the woods and not speaking again for months
-Both Jon and Martin have rocky relationships with birthdays so they both try so hard to make them the best they possibly can be
-Elias is fucking ancient and Peter hates interaction, these guys don’t do birthdays
*end*
Sorry for having an obvious Lonelyeyes bias but Peter and Elias have a fucking vice grip on my mind (it’s the whole Jonah/Original Elias being not quite two different people in Peter’s eyes) (And also the voice)

There's such delicious dramatic irony in Martin saying, "This isn’t about saving the world, it’s all just some power play against [Elias.]" and being right about that! Peter's ultimate goal isn't to save the world, it's to be the one to end it, and, in the short term, to win a bet -
but Martin's also wrong about his own unimportance, because this is perhaps the clearest shot anyone had at stopping the apocalypse. and if Martin had actually killed Jonah here, the Spider would've had a real hard time fixing that gap in their web

I do stand by the belief that the Desolation is so chaotic, unpredictably destructive and canonically able to fight against the web (to some capacity) that had anyone in the archives leaned into it it would aid in undermining any plan by anyone ever

I like to think that Martin is sort of like the kind of manipulator that makes you feel comfortable. He makes you feel at home and like you can trust him, then he fucking gets you.
And Jon is his boyfriend :)
