two ends of the white boy youtube spectrum: removing all of your free content to put it behind a paywall on another fucking subscription service (and then backpedaling because you read the room so fucking poorly) vs uploading your entire 2 hour comedy special for free when no one expected/demanded to be able to view it for free ever

It has probably been said before, but in It's a Wonderful Life, part of George's regret is a sense of guilt about what Mary could have had had she not married him; that she is in it because she loves him so much, and so she endures the life they have. And yet when we get to the reality where George never existed, Mary is a librarian. There's this contrast between the casinos and the cabarets and such (all exploitative and fraudulent ways of preying on desperate poor people) that populate Pottersville, and Mary, in this timeline, choosing the one job that remains a community oriented, free, helpful service. She married George because she loved him, yes, but also because his convictions about doing good for his community were also hers all along, and would have been even if he had not existed. She doesn't endure the life they have out of sheer abnegation, but embraces it out of conviction.

“i’m not in love with you anymore.”
“i never know you were.”
“maybe it was better than way.”
she flicks open her pack of cigarettes and fishes on out, lighting it up. she takes a drag, and then exhales, smoke twirling in the air, looping and twisting.
“do you really think so?”
“yeah. i thought the world of you, mary. once. i can’t say the same thing, now. i miss what you once were. i miss us.”
“i’m not going back to that place.” her voice shakes; she sighs, and looks away, and melancholy is regret to her.
“i know. i’m not, either.”
“so, this is goodbye.”
marlene nods. she can’t change it, she knows that; they’ve both made their choice. she gives mary one last, sad, smile, before she shuts the door behind her.

I keep finding it so uncomfortable when people differentiate between women and men in my surroundings, and assume that some people are men and some are women. It's uncomfortable both because what if someone doesn't identify with whatever gender they may look like, and because why is it an important distinction in the first place?
Granted, there may be circumstances where it's relevant, but for context let me list some examples of what I mean. These are examples that I've experienced in the recent weeks:
When playing a game that requires two teams, someone suggested that the women should play against the men, and then when this ended up being the case, regular jokes were being made related to gender whenever someone made a bad play
At lunch, someone said "looks like we're all women here today"
Whenever someone who presents as a man has done something stupid or whatever (whether a celebrity or just a regular person), it's common for people to tie that stupidity to the fact that the person is "a man". This seems like a tactic that's sometimes used in order to gain social benefit with women. For example, ending a story about something stupid someone did by going, "ugh, men"
It's also common to hear people mention someone's gender in a story they're telling as though the gender is relevant to the story, when usually it really isn't relevant at all. For example, "... and then she did X and Y, which isn't strange at all because she's a woman, and then he said Z ..."
I know these are innocent things people do and say, and they likely aren't even aware that it can be uncomfortable for some people. Maybe for people who strongly identify as either gender it can even be affirming to have people say these things. I just wish I knew a good way to say that it's making me uncomfortable without having it become a big thing or making them think I'm overreacting

My fiance just finished Omori (good ending) and I'm now obsessed with an AU where Mari survived...but most of canon still happened. Mari is knocked unconscious by the fall and Sunny and Basil think she's dead. Their cover up almost actually killed Mari, and paralyzed her. (she was found a lot sooner so she wouldn't strangle). Mari doesn't remember anything between getting ready for the recital and waking up in the hospital.
Sunny and Basil feel just as guilty as in canon, because they almost killed a LIVING Mari, and probably made her injuries much worse. Sunny still is a hikikomori, this time hiding from even Mari.
Mari thinks she was more subconsciously stressed than she realized which caused her loss of time. She thinks SHE is the cause of Sunny's state. After being transferred to a specialist physical therapist in the City, she spent a lot of time away from home, and then going off to college she didn’t spend a lot of time at home after the accident (which I think is fair, considering their current house isn’t exactly wheelchair accessible, this is actually why Mom has finally decided to move, to find a place more accessible so Mari can visit more. It was a hard choice to make for her, originally she stayed because she hoped Sunny would open up for his friends, but she sorta lost hope after a while. It’s just taken her a while to find the right place)
Aubrey is still troubled. She still feels abandoned, but it has less to do with Mari and more to do with the break down of her friendships: shut in, nervous wreck, far too busy for her...and her home life
Other than her now somewhat strained relationship with Sunny, Mari is doing pretty well! Engaged on her 18th birthday to Hero, they maintain a good relationship despite attending different colleges (Mari wants to be an Ecologist). They both are very excited to see each other again during summer vacation. Though Hero worries a lot about her (the idea of Mari seeming totally fine, and then trying to hang herself later that evening haunts him, this and the stuff that eventually goes down with Sunny and Basil help him choose Pediatric Psychiatry as his field of study, specializing in anxiety and mood disorders) he loves her and wants to be with her.
Obviously Mari would need to be told the truth as well. Sunny feels he ruined his sister’s life. He makes a much bigger deal of things like Mari being in physical therapy and being in a wheelchair, Mari’s early frustration with her disability, and pain. And overlooks things like Mari and Hero are still dating, Mari is still going to college (even if she now needs to take accessibility into account) Mari has friends, Mari is doing okay.

Tina Turner - GoldenEye (1995)
"You'll never know
How I watched you from the shadows as a child,
You'll never know
How it feels to be the one who's left behind.
You'll never know the days,
The nights, the tears, the tears I've cried;
But now my time has come
And time, time is not on your side!"
