ROUND ONE MATCHUP EIGHT: QUINTESSENTIALLY AMERICAN

Alright, so for our final round one matchup, we've got two very American cryptids! I know a bunch of them have been American, but these two just strike me as especially so. Like, they're *the* classic American cryptids in my opinion. And as your showdown runner, my opinion counts!

Anyway, we've got MOTHMAN coming up in this round. He's a moth, he's a man, and we love him. Glowing red eyes, huge black wings, roughly the body of a human. Oh, and there's that caked statue of Mothman in West Virginia, where this cryptid originates. Mothman has also been seen in Chicago, but they're originally from Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

And filling in our final spot of round one, the JERSEY DEVIL. As you may guess, this cryptid comes to us from New Jersey. This one dates back to the 1730s, so they say, and was born as the 13th child to a tired and exasperated woman. She'd cursed the child accidentally while pregnant, and it changed into the Jersey Devil after being born a normal-looking baby. Upon completing the transformation, the JD killed its mother and fled to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where it has tormented and attacked people at random ever since.

ROUND ONE MATCHUP SIX: AIN'T GOT A THEME

I don't know what to tell you, I just couldn't think of theme for this one. They're more goofy little critters, but not much of a connection between them. Whatever! I themed most of them.

We've got the FRESNO NIGHTCRAWLERS coming in here! They are pants. I don't know what to tell you. I don't know how else to explain them. They look like white pants that move of their own will! But the guy who first saw them was deeply terrified of them for whatever reason. As you may expect, these friends come to us from Fresno, California. There seem to be many of them; maybe that's what scared the first guy?

And we also have the SQUONK. The squonk is a vaguely pig-like creature who hates its appearance so much that it is constantly sobbing about how ugly it is. If you ever see one, if it sees you seeing it, it will cry so hard it literally dissolves into a puddle of tears. Get some self-esteem, Squonk! Your worth is not tied to your aesthetic value! It is apparently native to Pennsylvania, US.

Starting NEXT WEEK, we begin the ultimate competition:

DMM: RISING STARS

These are ALL dinosaurs that have been discovered in the past five years!!! New friends from old times!!! Including such new fan favorites as Bajadasaurus, Jakapil, Meraxes, and Anachronornis - and that's only four of them!

From the weird to the wonderful, these dinosaurs are here to indicate that just because they were found recently, doesn't mean that they aren't destined to become icons like the names we already know and love. Get ready to learn about some new paleontological excitement - and debate angrily over which ones are better ;)

Round One will go from March 1st through the 7th

Round Two will extend from March 8th through the 14th

Round Three will then go from the 15th to the 21st

Round Four from the 22nd to the 28th

And the FINAL FOUR SHOWDOWN (Ornithischian Vs Sauropodomorph vs Nonavian theropod vs Bird) will occur from March 29th through April 4th!
