A celebration of S3 Arthur and Gwaine, tweaked for shipping comfort and ease of use.

Both of their characters feel so true to themselves, and it's such an excellent take on their slowly developing season 3 dynamic. Not to mention that the pay-off is excellent, and Merlin deserves compensation for putting up with them. Top tier Arwaine dynamic.

They needed to get his temperature up higher, faster. “Arthur, take your clothes off.” “I really don’t think this is the time, Merlin,” the prince answered exasperatedly, shaking his head. “Body heat,” Merlin explained, already standing up to shuck his cloak and jacket off. The wind whipped the jacket from his hand. “It’s the fastest way to warm him back up.”

Hurt/Comfort, huddling for warmth, emotionally stunted but sweetheart Arthur, and a happy poly ending for all of them? Yeah. This entire fic feels like a warm blanket itself and single-handedly turned me into a whump!Gwaine fan I think, 10/10 no notes <3

Arthur and Gwaine, both hopelessly in unrequited love (or is it?) with Merlin, use each other to get off.

I'm such a sucker for this trope and it just works SO well for the three of them. The trio is mostly implied at the end but I actually liked it best that way, it's such a great snapshot of the dynamic between Arthur and Gwaine, what's missing and what isn't, with the 'fix' mostly left in the air because really, they probably don't know exactly, either.

Arthur's not a prude, but he does think the number of times he's walked in on his flatmates having at it probably qualifies them for some sort of general obscenity charge.

While this is mostly PWP, it just feels SO true to the dynamic of Merlin and Gwaine being little shits and entirely making it Arthur's problem. There's bets about who will get whom of quicker. It's excellent.

They are attacked by bandits and while Gwaine is dealing with seemingly the last one of them, he realizes Merlin is seriously wounded.

Fic: MyKingdomComeUndone created Something So Magic About You (The Taste of Temptation Remix) for insane_falcon (Merlin/Arthur – Explicit – 27053w) Summary: “You’re more interesting than I thought you’d be,” Arthur admits, allowing his lips to curl into a smile that hovers somewhere between supercilious and patronising. “But you should really give up while I’m playing nice. I’ve been trained to kill since birth.”

His breath catches in his throat as the boy lets out an undignified snort. That was not quite the reaction he was aiming for... Before he can come up with something clever and scathing to say, the boy doubles down.

“And how long have you been training to be a prat?” he asks, again raising that damned eyebrow of his. “Or did that just come naturally?”

For an excruciating moment, Arthur is struck speechless. How dare this…this imbecile insult him to his face? A prat? He’ll show him who’s the prat!

Arthur’s eyes narrow as he brings his sword back up, but instead of cowering in fear, the boy merely smirks at him.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

Generally I never say never. However when I was initially fucking around with the idea of Somewhere to Get To, I had considered it starting in the far future. Like, 2010s, and it would have started with a little vignette about one (or several) of Hawkeye's patients just living life (was trying to play abstractly with the question that comes up over and over again in S2G2 of, like, was it worth it for Hawkeye to have been there? What did the world gain from it? Etc.) Reveal that Hawkeye in fact is recently dead, and then a slow fall back into the primary plot with our young(er) Hawkeye. But this 1. felt weird 2. didn't work and 3. made me sad, so I chopped it. It's still around in one of my docs I think but it sucked.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

Fff. ouughhh. Okay this is gonna be LONG and cover many fandoms sorry. Okay. So:

In general,

Designations Congruent with Things by CWR is something I reread every few years in order to have my brain exploded about how I'm never going to write something that good and also to catch feelings about wanting to be known and loved even when you don't like yourself, and to cry a little about humanity's drive for knowledge, etc.

Also Pacific Rim, irisbleufic's "Anthology" series. Haven't reread it in a while because it makes me like believe in love and the good of humanity and stuff. 'S brilliant. The end scene with Newt and Boston and the sky....... sticks with me still 5 yrs later. Awesome.

Also Welcome, Wanderer from singlecrow (TNG) which makes me crazy and is a great great great playful interesting multi-textual piece, dense and fun and fascinating and fae and good. It rules.

And the entire Controlled Burn series by jimmymcgools in Better Call Saul, of all places (some of the most gorgeous lyrical prose I've ever seen frfr).

[voice of a guy digging through his bookmarks and downloads] I can't believe I forgot "There Are No Gays in Football" by Malu_3, Merlin fandom. Changed me. The wrangling of fame and identity...

Speaking of Merlin, Pianos are made for Falling by fishwrites. Nodame Cantabile AU, kind of. Blew my mind as a teenager and I still love it. Makes me cry.

ANYWAY in MASH, Maple Syrup by Granspn when I can emotionally handle little Hawk, and "these are the days of miracle and wonder" also by singlecrow (Radar in the field, plus also Hawkeye's century of the atom speech are 2 indelible MASH ficdom images to me). Homecoming by yaroantheo also murks me every time.... the wedding scene....... I'm sure there's others but these are the ones coming immediately to mind.

29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic.

Fuck. I forgot I was working on a modern AU Beejhawk just to prove to myself that I thought it was possible to do while maintaining the spirit of the show. I don't think I'll ever finish it. A chunk of that here:

Hawkeye woke him by pelting him with a ballpoint pen.

“Hnf,” BJ said, opening his eyes, disoriented: he saw only a span of featureless beige tile. His proprioception lagged, struggling to inform him where and how he was positioned in space. He felt briefly as though he was floating, released from the perpetual falling of earthly gravity, and then groaned as direction reasserted itself. He was face-down on a floor somewhere for some reason.

Another pen contacted his face and he flinched. “Stop.”

“You’re an hour-fifteen late,” Hawkeye informed him from somewhere far above.

BJ’s body jolted into action without consulting his brain. He slammed his head against the underside of a table. Memory was coming back to him in pieces—a late case, scrubbing out, vision greying and fuzzing at the edges, sitting down in the mess, deciding to have a cup of coffee with Hawkeye who was only halfway through his own shift. He’d fallen asleep, evidently, or lost consciousness and then fallen asleep, but how had he ended up underneath the table?

“Which case?” BJ asked, nauseated with exhaustion, uncertain what day of the week it was, only tentatively sure of the month. Fabric shifted over his torso as he hauled himself out from under the table. Somebody had draped a lab coat over him as he slept.

“Hunnicutt v. Hunnicutt,” Hawkeye said, voice calm and unemotive, which was a kindness.

“Oh, fuck,” BJ said, closing his eyes, dread walloping him. He debated the merits of lying back down and sleeping until his next shift began or he died of a widowmaker—not that he’d be leaving anybody widowed once Peg’s lawyer was through with him.

“Hand me those pens, will you?” Hawkeye asked, like he hadn’t just used them as artillery.

You see, the thing about Ted Lasso is imagine you have a favourite fanfic. For me it's There Are No Gays in Football by Malu_3. It's a BBC Merlin fanfic where Arthur is a professional footballer, Merlin is the club physio, and the rest of the knights make up the other players on the team. It's hot, it's sweet, it's angsty, it's full of shenanigans, the club is a family – it's just perfect.

Then you find out that not only is there a TV show with these exact vibes (admittedly less smut), where the whole football club is family and there's the perfect amount of comedy, fluff, and angst...

... but it also has basically the same mf as an antagonist

S’s Comments: On the edge of my seat the whole time, even though I’ve probably read it about 100 times by now. I love the writing style, with the changing dates, where you’re not exactly sure what’s happening and are finding out the story in pieces as Merlin and Arthur are. Also Arthur’s characterization is extremely sweet, a touch panicked, infinitely worried and caring, and just a bit embarrassed too. Really beautiful look into a relationship about to begin.

Elyan/Percival - Ten Fic Reclist

The April challenge for Merlin Bingo is to do a reclist for one of your squares and I picked these goons! Tbh any Elyan ship has my interest and there are so many lovely Perlyan stories out there... here are just ten faves:

When the Time Is Right (The Darkness Will Leave Us) by Malu_3 (Grainne)

Give him time, they'd said. Given all that Elyan's been through, Percival thinks he understands. But as the months go by and the distance grows, he starts to wonder.

A lovely fic that deals with Elyan’s trauma following Morgana’s torture and Gwen’s banishment, written with great tenderness.

Little House on the Edge of Nowhere by Isabear

Legends say Percival lived in the forest before he came to Camelot. This was true, but he didn't live alone.

Beautiful fic giving us an au on both men pre-canon. So much contained in so few words!

Percival is self conscious about the size of his penis, not for the usual size!kink reasons.

This is more Elyan focussed but I couldn’t resist! He’s trans and making his own life and loving Percival and it’s so nice.

When Arthur and Gwen leave to attend a conference in Nemeth, Elyan is appointed Regent and tasked with running the kingdom while they're away.

But luckily for him, Percival is right there with open arms and ears, and maybe an open heart as well.

Elyan as regent is awesome and you get so many lovely character moments from him and Percival and their growing bond.

Even when he has so little free time, Elyan spends it doing something for someone else. And he does it with all his heart.

Great Perlyan and such a lovely sibling relationship between Gwen and Elyan as a bonus!

Percival convinces Elyan to go ice skating with him but things take a turn.

Absolutely adorable fluff!

Elyan and Percival decide it's high time the King and his Manservant realized their feelings for each other. Along the way, they find each other.

Mutual pining! Miscommunication! Sexual frustration! This fic has it all and it's so beautifully written too.
