Surgery- Jay Halstead/ Matt Casey/ Kelly Severide
Summary: Your boys before and after you have a diagnostic procedure. You have anxiety, but you have the best support system.
Mentions: Maggie Lockwood, April Sexton, Wallace Boden, and Crocket
Warnings: nausea, talk of needles, basically an anxiety attack
—————————
In order for you to have someone with you at all times for the few days after your diagnostic laparoscopic procedure, Matt was working on shift today, but Kelly and Jay were by your side. Jay had managed to get two days off to be with you on the day of your surgery and the day after, and Kelly had managed to get this shift off.
Though you knew lots of the doctors and nurses at Med, you were extremely nervous. Maggie promised to be with you through pre-op, Dr. Marcel had convinced Nat to allow him to do the procedure rather than an OB, and April was going to be your post op nurse. Kelly and Jay were going to be with you when you woke up, knowing that you panic when coming out of anesthesia, so everything seemed to be planned out perfectly. Your nerves were just giving you a really hard time.
———pre-op———
“I don’t want to do this.” You said, practically pleading with Kelly and Jay. “Please. I’ll do more tests and even do blood work, but I don’t want to do this.” you had tears streaming down your face as Maggie walked around getting you all prepped while your boys tried to comfort you.
Jay was stood next to your head and Kelly was sat next to you on the bed. Both boys were on the same side so that Maggie had room to work. Jay had a hand massaging the back of your neck as Kelly held the hand that Maggie wasn’t preparing to put an Iv in.
“Baby. It’s gonna be okay.” Kelly said, locking eyes with you. “You’ll be asleep before you know it and then we will be right there with you again. Then we can go home and call Matt. He might even have some time to come see you for a few minutes.” Kelly tried to reason with you, but you shook your head and turned to Jay instead.
Jay’s eyes were showing slight amusement but mostly sympathy. All three of you had masks on, so you had to read his eyes. “Sweetheart.” Jay sighed, shaking his head. “You know I don’t like needles or hospitals any more than you do, but this is going to help you. Nothing bad is going to happen to you.” Jay said, leaning down and pulling off his mask long enough to place a kiss on your forehead.
“I’m gonna numb your hand. Quick poke.” Maggie spoke up, already inserting the needle. The boys shushed you as Kelly cradled your face and wiped the tears that began to spill anew. “All done. Just let it get numb and then I’ll insert the Iv. You won’t even know it happened.” Maggie said, rubbing your arm.
The boys watched as your face grew pale and glanced at each other. You had your eyes closed as you focused on trying to take deep breaths. You didn’t say anything until the IV was in place. “Feel sick.” You muttered, just loud enough for the boys to hear you.
“Mags. She’s not doing so hot.” Kelly said, catching the charge nurse’s attention.
Maggie whipped her head in your direction and started giving out orders. “Deep breaths Y/n.” Maggie soothed, jogging to the Iv cart. “Jay, pull down her mask for me.” Maggie grabbed an alcohol cloth and tore the packet open as Jay pulled down your mask. “Sniff this. I know it’s weird but trust me.” Maggie said, holding the packet to your nose.
You looked at her strangely before sniffing the swab. It was odd and a first for you. Maggie coached you through a few more breaths before she pulled back. “Better?” Kelly asked, rubbing your hand. The color had began to return to your face at this point.
“Yeah.” You said with a slow nod. “Still a tiny bit nauseous but definitely better.” You closed your eyes and leaned your head back, nuzzling into Jay’s hand that had found its way to your forehead where his thumb was rubbing soothingly against your hairline.
“Let me call Dr. Marcel and let him know that happened. You also get very nauseous and anxious coming out of anesthesia, right?” Maggie asked as she walked to the door and began typing on her handheld.
“Yeah. That’s what my mom says anyways. I was super little when I had my only other surgery, so I honestly don’t remember.” You said, shrugging slightly.
“Well, let me go get you a patch that Crockett normally recommends his patients in your predicament, and I’ll be back to put it on just before you go into surgery, okay?” Maggie said, smiling at you and your lovers.
You nodded and smiled back before pulling your mask back up. Your boys said an audible thank you as you all settled in to wait your turn.
———skip procedure to recovery———
As I slowly started to regain consciousness, I felt a weight in both my hands. I grunted and tried to move only to be unable to do so. It sent me in a panic and my eyes flew open as I gasped in a huge breath. I could hear the heart monitor beeping loudly as chairs squeaked and both my boys started talking to me.
“Shhhh shh. It’s alright. Breathe.” Jay said, leaning over and pressing the call button next to me. The room was small, just cut off by a curtain for privacy.
“April!” Kelly said loudly, stepping back a bit away from me to not startle me more, but looking for our friend.
The curtain swung open as April shuffled in, coming to mute the monitor that was next to Kelly. “Do you want me to push some anxiety meds?” April asked Kelly as he was the closest to her at the moment.
Kelly shook his head and turned to you, rubbing a hand through your hair. “Give us a second. Let her get her bearings.” Kelly didn’t want to disorient you further, so he knew that he and Jay had to calm you down soon.
Jay wiped the tears that were falling down your face as Kelly spoke to April. Jay kept up his comforting words and soon had your full attention. “Hey sweetheart. It’s alright. We’ve got you. It went well. You with me?” Jay asked, locking eyes with you.
You nodded slowly, reaching for him. Jay allowed you to pull him closer and kissed you softly on the nose before connecting your foreheads. “Home?” You whispered, breathing in time with Jay as Kelly soothed your hair down and held your hand.
“Soon.” Jay whispered, kissing your lips softly. “Think you can drink something for me?” Jay asked, pulling back to examine your face.
“Sprite?” You muttered, turning to look at Kelly and April.
April smiled and nodded her head. “I’ll go grab that really quick. You guys good?” April asked, giving Kelly and Jay a quick look. Both boys nodded and April took off.
“Call Matty?” You whispered, looking between your two boys.
Kelly smiled softly as Jay smirked. “Of course baby girl.” Kelly whispered, kissing your forehead. He pulled his phone out and dialed Matt, talking to him for a very brief moment. “Someone wants to talk to you Case.” Kelly said, drowning in your puppy dog eyes.
You smiled and took the phone. “Matty?” You whispered, giving a water smile at the sound of his voice.
“Hey princess. How are you feeling?” Matt asked, pacing his office.
Tears slid down your face as you croaked out your answer. “‘M okay. Miss you.” You sniffed, looking down at the blanket in your lap and picking at a piece of fluff on it.
Matt sighed and scrubbed his face. “Baby. I know. I miss you. When you’re all settled and I get some time, I’ll swing by with the truck and come snuggle you for a few minutes. Sound good?” Matt asked, trying to bargain with you. He hated when you cried and he knew this was hard on you.
You nodded, even though you knew he couldn’t see you. “M‘Kay.” You muttered. “Be safe.” You said, needing to end the conversation before you full out sobbed.
“I always am Angel. Let me talk to Kelly, okay? I love you.” Matt said, stopping his pacing as he caught the picture of the four of you on his desk. It really pained him not to be there, but he knew you would need him in a couple days, so this was something he was willing to do in order for you to get the care you would need.
“Love you.” You whispered before handing the phone back to Kelly.
Kelly smiled and walked a few steps away as he spoke to Matt. Jay leaned down and kissed your head and wiped more tears from your face. April returned as Jay had finally got you settled against him. It took some slow adjusting, but you managed to convince Jay to sit in the bed with you and hold you. He was desperate to calm you down, so he complied once he made sure he wouldn’t accidentally hurt you.
April smiled at the sight of the couple. It was rare to see any of the four alone with just a certain part of the couple. You all liked to stick together, all being better as one, but the sight in front of April was heartwarming. You were curled into Jay’s side as he quietly shushed you and fiddled with the blankets as he attempted to warm you back up and sooth you. Kelly was off in the corner, speaking quietly on the phone with his back to his lovers, missing the exchange but focusing on convincing Matt that you would be fine.
“Hey sweetie. Drink this and if you can keep it down, these knuckleheads can take you home.” April said, handing the small sprite to Jay for him to hold.
You carefully took the straw in between your lips and took a few cautious sips. Jay pulled back when you stopped for a second, worried about you immediately rejecting the beverage, but sighed in relief when you smiled and took the straw back, slowly drinking your favorite drink. April waited until you were done and took the can as Kelly walked back over.
“Getting cuddles already I see.” Kelly teased lightly, coming and kissing your head and then Jay’s forehead.
“Yep. Hate to see our girl cry. Had to do something.” Jay said, turning and kissing your cheek. “She just finished a sprite. If it stays down, we can go home.” Jay filled in Kelly as you snuggled deeper into his side.
Kelly nodded and looked to April. “Can we get her dressed?” He knew you felt extremely exposed under just a hospital gown and blanket. You had made that clear while you were in pre-op. He was desperate to get you comfortable.
April smiled and nodded. “Of course. There is a bandage on the incision site. She’s gonna be sore for a couple days. Just go slow, okay?” April coached, handing Kelly your bag.
“Of course.” Kelly confirmed with a nod.
“I’ll be back in a bit. Just holler if you need anything.” April said, smiling at you before she left, shutting the curtain behind her.
Jay held back a laugh as you immediately tugged at the gown, pulling it off yourself. You were in nothing but underwear, which Jay and Kelly had slipped on you when you came into post op. Kelly smirked and shook his head as he pulled out Jay’s Army hoodie and handed it to its owner to be put on you. Though, if everyone were honest, the sweatshirt now belonged to you. After Jay carefully pulled the hoodie onto your form, Kelly shimmied a pair of Matt’s CFD sweatpants onto your body before he covered your feet with your favorite fluffy socks.
Kelly stepped back and admired his work as you snuggled back into Jay’s side. You had the most content look on your face as Jay brushed the flyaways back. “Comfy?” Kelly asked, a hint of humor in his voice.
You smiled, kissing Jay’s chest. “Very.” You nodded, closing your eyes. “Home now?” You asked, not bothering to look at either of your boys.
Kelly and Jay both chuckled. “Let me go ask April.” Kelly said, leaning over to kiss your cheek before leaving.
“I love you. You are so brave.” Jay said, kissing your forehead and then your nose.
“Only cause you both make me feel safe.” You said, opening your eyes as Jay searched for yours. You fell in love with Jay’s eyes. They always told the truth and looked at you with such adoration. You were his sun. The boys were his stars, but you were the center of his universe.
“I told you we would never let anything bad happen to you sunshine.” Jay said, smiling brightly at you.
You began to answer when Kelly walked in. “Alright! April said we are good to go. Now, it’s hospital policy to be wheeled out in a wheelchair, but I figured you would rather be carried.” Kelly said, smiling as you nodded enthusiastically and threw yours arms up with little grabby hands.
Kelly and Jay laughed at your response. Jay helped you make quick work of getting in a position to where Kelly could grab you up. Though he was quick, both boys made sure to be extra careful with you. You waved to April over Kelly’s shoulder as Jay led the way out of the hospital and back out to the truck.
~~~~~ back home~~~~
Once Jay pulled into the driveway, Kelly gently unbuckled the two of you and pulled your sleeping body into his arms once again. Jay opened the door and led you both into the house. You remained mostly asleep until Kelly sat you down into a familiar set of arms.
You practically jumped up, tears immediately slipping down your face. “Matty?!” You screeched, shoving your face into his neck as you sobbed and held onto him as tightly as possible.
Matt chuckled as he cradled your head and rubbed your back. “Hey princess.” Matt whispered, kissing the side of your head. “Shhhh. It’s alright baby. I’m here now.” Matt shushed, rocking slightly to help sooth your sobbing form. The drugs were making you overly tired so you were overly emotional.
“Glad you could come home.” Kelly said, leaning down to kiss Matt before backing away and letting Jay do the same.
“I was a mess. I couldn’t stand her crying.” Matt said, looking between Kelly and Jay with a questioning look. “What’s got her so worked up?” Matt asked his best guys.
“It’s the meds. She’s been teary eyed since she woke up.” Jay said, walking into the kitchen to get you some food and some Gatorade.
“She needs to eat and then she can sleep.” Kelly said, grabbing a few tissues out of the box and sitting down next to you and Matt. “Baby. You gotta slow down.” Kelly said, rubbing your side.
Matt kissed your head again and pulled back slightly. “Baby girl. Let me see your beautiful face.” Matt whispered.
You pulled back slowly and looked to Matt and then Kelly. Kelly reached up to wipe your face before holding the tissues to your nose. “Blow.” Kelly instructed, and you did, but followed it with a whine. “What is it baby?” Kelly asked.
“Hurts.” You mumbled, putting your hand on your stomach.
“I know princess. I know.” Matt said, rubbing your back. “But Jay has some food here and something to drink. Think you can manage something and then we can see about taking something before we nap?” Matt asked, putting his hand on the side of your face as a stray tear escaped.
You nodded, sniffing as you allowed Matt and Kelly to adjust you to sit between them on the couch. You smiled as you saw Jay, who was balancing a tray with your favorite food, your favorite flavor of Gatorade, and a slew of medications.
“Dinner is served.” Jay said in his best fake French accent. Everyone burst out laughing as Jay laid the tray in your lap. “Need anything else while I’m up?” Jay asked you, leaning down to kiss your forehead.
You shook your head and dug into your meal, starving after not eating all day. You were more than content. You had all your men and your favorites in front of you. Even with the discomfort you were feeling, your soul was happy.
Jay smiled and nodded before settling on Matt’s other side. “Glad you’re here. Her crying for you broke my heart.” Jay said, snuggling into Matt’s side.
Matt smiled and kissed Jay on the top of the head. “Broke me too. Kelly tried to convince me that she would be fine, but I couldn’t focus so Chief sent me home.” Matt said, running a hand up and down your back.
You leaned into Matt’s touch with a sigh. You were exhausted and in pain, but you were so glad that you had your boys.
Having a doctor and a cop as a brother usually meant they weren't around all of the time. You didn't really mind, they loved their jobs and you loved them. However it did mean that when you needed them they couldn't always make it.
Your day at school had gone about as well as you expected that morning, absolutely terribly. Every period it was like the workload grew and your energy diminished. When you finally got home you abandoned your bag in the entryway and headed straight for your bed. Lately it had felt as if every day was harder than the last, getting up in the morning had become near intolerable. You couldn't go to your brothers, they were busy with their own things and the last thing they needed was their little sister demanding attention.
You pulled back your duvet, revealing the tangle of blankets and sheets underneath that you hadn't tidied that morning. Jay was strict on keeping every part of the apartment orderly and tidy, which meant making your bed every time you got up. Today you had just pulled up the duvet and made it look tidy to save the effort. You climbed under the covers, pulling the blankets up to your chin and trying to hold back the wave of emotions that threatened to crash into you like a tsunami. The weight of the day started to pull on you more, drawing you into a drowsy state. Just as you closed your eyes to sleep your phone buzzed.
Detective Chuckles
'Hey kid, won't be home til late. Don't wait up.'
You didn't bother replying, stuffing your phone under your pillow and closing your eyes again. Maybe the world wouldn't be so daunting if you just took a nap.
When you woke up the sky outside your window was dark, the entire apartment was cold and eerily quiet. You fished around for your phone, nearly blinding yourself as you checked the time. 6:43.
You lay there just staring at your phone for a moment, you didn't feel well rested or any better about your situation. You just felt like you had wasted time for nothing. Tears stung your eyes, this was stupid. You had nothing to feel bad about, everything was practically fine. You held your breath as you forced yourself into the bathroom, grabbing a face cloth and soaking it to clean your face of the running mascara and hot tears. You could faintly see yourself in the mirror despite the lack of light. Your face was red and puffy, it was clear you had been crying. You stared down at the basin, trying to calm yourself down but to no avail. You had to get out of here. Being alone felt like the entire world was silent, waiting, waiting for you to do something regrettable.
You tried not to sob as you made your way back to your room, pulling on your shoes and retrieving your phone. You walked through the apartment to Hailey and Jays room, pulling open the drawers until you found one of Jays old hoodies. You slipped it over your head,it was far too long on you, you had to bunch the cuffs up at your wrist to be able to use your hands but you didn't care. You just wanted to wear something comfortable and big. You grabbed the keys from where you chucked them in our bag and made your way out of the apartment.
As you made your way out of the building you contemplated going to the precinct to see Jay, but if he was staying late it meant they hd a big case and they were busy. Instead, you walked to the closest subway entrance and headed towards Med. Going to see Will meant he would try doctor you, but he gave the best hugs and it was exactly what you needed right now. And waiting in the doctors lounge in the busy ED sounded a lot better than lying alone in the dark at home.
When you got off the subway and headed towards Med, it had started raining. Normally you welcomed the rain, but tonight it felt like the world had a personal vendetta against you. You could have sworn the forecast had said it wasn't meant to rain this week. You walked into the ED waiting room and waved half heartedly to Leah at the reception desk. She looked busy but nodded a hello and didn't stop you as you walked through the doors.
The ED was always busy, tonight was no different. When you approached the front desk you waited out of the way for Maggie to spot you.
"Hey, Mini Halstead," She smiled, you could tell she was studying your puffy face. She put down the phone in her hands and ushered you behind the desk, pulling you closer. "What's wrong?"
You had to take a deep breath to stop from crying gain, you shrugged, "Nothing really." You mumbled.
Maggie frowned, "Doesn't look like nothing," She gently wrapped her arm around your shoulders.
You rubbed your eyes with the back of your hands, forcing yourself to take a moment before talking.
"Can you tell Will I'm here when he gets a second?" You finally managed to get out.
Maggie nodded, "Of course," She guided you through the ED and opened the doctors lounge door for you. She told you to wait there while she told Will and that as soon as he had a moment he would come see you.
The doctors lounge was considerably more quiet than the ED just through the door. You sat down on the couch and pulled out your phone, there were no messages from anyone but you made yourself busy by scrolling through it anyway. After about 20 minutes, Will entered the lounge. He had a look of concern written over his face. He knew that you only ever came to the hospital to see him if it was important. You hated hospitals.
"Hey squirt," He walked into the room, taking off his stethoscope and leaving it on the table. You didn't wait for him to say something else, just got to your feet and wrapping your arms around him in a hug. Will immediately hugged you back, rubbing a hand up and down your back soothingly as you cried into his shirt. He didn't say anything, just held you as you cried and soothed you until you were ready to talk.
When you pulled away he gently tucked your hair out of your face, wiping the tears off your cheeks and waiting patiently for you to meet his eyes.
When you did, he smiled softly and asked, "What's the matter, Y/N?"
You took a shaky inhale, "I don't know," you told him, "I just needed a hug from my big brother."
Will looked compassionate, he drew you back into a hug and held you a little tighter. "Is Jay not home?"
"No," You replied, "Him and Hailey are working late."
Will nodded, unwrapping his arms and leading you back to the couch. He sat you down and walked to the fridge, returning with a bottle of water. He cracked off the lid before handing it to you and quietly ordering you to take a drink.
He sighed, rubbing your back and looking concerned.
"Sorry for bothering you," You mumbled, unable to look at him.
"No," Will argued, "You aren't bothering me, okay? I'm happy you came."
You nodded, not really believing what he said.
"Have you eaten?" He asked, starting to merge from worried big brother to worried doctor.
You shook your head, telling him how you got home and fell asleep then came right here.
"Okay," He took a moment to think, "I get off at 8, in about half an hour, can you wait that long? We can grab Pizza and watch a movie or something, yeah?"
You nodded, relaxing back into the couch and making yourself comfortable to wait for him to get off. He leaned over and pressed a kiss to your forehead, before leaving the lounge with a promise he would try get away a little earlier. You couldn't find the energy to return to scrolling through your phone, just staring at the wall and trying to stay awake while you waited for Will. He returned just before 8, grabbing his stuff from his locker and pulling you to his side as you both walked to his car.
"I love you, squirt," He said, smiling at you as you walked, "Anytime you need a hug you can come find me, yeah?"
You smiled, "Yeah. I love you too."
Y/n watched her reflection in the faucet beneath her as she thoroughly washed her hands with the soap bar, her mind elsewhere other than her task that was going to arrive just in seconds.
"L/n?" A person called, making Y/n turn around after shaking off water off of her fingers.
There stood Connor Rhodes, her fellow co-surgeon in most situations.
"Good Afternoon, Dr. Rhodes." She answered while Connor walked up to the sinks to wash his own hands before the surgery.
"Ready for this hell of a fight?" Connor asked, making Y/n, who was staring through the glass into the OR, laugh and turn back to him.
"Just slightly nervous, Dr." She began. "I've never, in my short years of being a worker here, done a surgery for an aortic aneurysm."
Connor stopped the water and shook the rest off of his hands before turning to Y/n with empathy in his eyes.
"I've not known you for a while, but I know and trust you will handle this completely fine. Just, calm down and take deep breaths to not hurry anything." He reassured Y/n who nodded before walking into the OR, Connor following behind.
While a nurse helped Y/n get her gloves on, the nurse noticed a slight shake in Y/n.
"Dr. L/n, are you alright?" She asked, looking up into Y/n's eyes who blinked from nervousity into seriousness.
"I'm fine." Y/n answered shortly before walking to the patient who laid there, completely untouched.
Y/n stared at the patient's skin and took a deep breathe before nodding.
Scalpel!
An incision was made with the scalpel, right by the abdomen.
Connor watched Y/n work silently, only asking for her equipment as she cut open the abdomen where the aneurysm was being hidden.
"Calm down, L/n." Connor muttered as he watched Y/n start to hurry with her work.
Y/n looked up at him, eyes locking with his as she noticed her breathing had stopped. She took a new deep breath and nodded before looking back down.
Clamps
Y/n stuck her hand down, trying to look for a part of the aorta where she could clamp it to stop the blood flow.
"I-.. I can't find a place to clamp down." She nervously stated, trying to look and feel for one.
Connor watched, trying to let Y/n find it for herself, since he knew she could do it.
He had been her teacher once, when she started at the ED.
Connor loved teaching Y/n, who always was open with critique and conversations about her improvement and what she should learn for next time.
He remembered how quickly she got sent up to the surgery team, after helping a surgery right on the spot in one of the emergency rooms.
It hadn't been a shocker for Connor later when Y/n showed her great skills in surgical matter, her calm and collected self helped him AND Downey in their surgeries.
But today, her calm and collected self had vanished, off to go to Bahamas while Y/n stayed and did a open surgical repair of an aortic aneurysm.
"N-No.. I can't- I-" Y/n's stressed muttering got interrupted by Connor.
"Hey, Y/n, calm down. This is going to go okay. Deep breaths. You know what you are looking for, tell me what you feel, look at me and tell me." Connor comforted Y/n who looked up into his eyes.
She nodded and kept her eyes on his, her fingers trying to find the perfect spot.
"I- H-Here, it's not too far from the aneurysm, I found it." She explained, looking down to clamp down onto the aorta.
Y/n went quiet again, looking down into the incision.
Scalpel.
As she got handed the scalpel, she felt her hands start to shake more as she tried to dip her hand into the patient's abdomen.
"Y/n?" Connor asked as he watched Y/n's hand shake as a leaf.
"I'm okay." Y/n said as she took a deep breath in and stuffed her hand down to cut off the weakend part of the aorta which contained the aneurysm.
Graft
Her hands shook only slightly as she tried to put the material tube, but she couldn't. Something was wrong.
"I can't get the graft in place, it's not working." Y/n spoke, her voice quite calm to difference to her mind.
"What do you mean?" One of the nurses beside her asked, brows furrowed.
"It- It won't. I checked this earlier and it should work but it won't do it." Y/n answered, starting to speak slightly quicker in stress.
Connor stood there, watching as he tried figuring out the problem.
"We need a solution, we can't leave this poor girl like this, I won't leave her to die." Y/n rambled while trying to fix with the graft.
The crew began quickly thinking about solutions, watching Y/n try to fit the graft by the aorta but failing miserably.
But alas, in the end, nothing worked.
A failed surgery, now a life of a woman taken to a stop.
Y/n hurried out from the OR, pulling her gloves and mask off, as her coat.
She watched Connor do the same before walking with him to the OR waiting room.
"Mr. Donawell. I am sorry to say, but your wife sadly passed in the surgery." Y/n said, feelings behind her words but her face showed nothing, like a stone cold wall.
Mr. Donawell stared at Y/n, tears startng to drop down into his lap until his eyebrows furrowed into an angry expression.
"You!" He shouted. "You murderer!"
Connor walked forward, putting a hand in front of Mr. Donawell.
"Mr. Donawell, calm down. Dr. L/n did her best work in that OR. The best I've seen lately. I understand your grief and I am so sorry for your loss, but this is not her fault. She only wanted the best for your wife." He argumented, the man in front of him turning quiet and sit back down in his chair.
Y/n bit down on her inner cheek as the two men fought, her mind and feelings running laps around and around.
"Once again, I am sorry for your loss and take your time. There is no hurry and when you feel like writing the last forms, come up to the desk and we will help you." Y/n spoke to the man who sat with tears streaming in his eyes.
Mr. Donawell nodded and put his head down, trying to calm his breathing.
Y/n and Connor took that as a sign to leave him alone and walked away down toward the ED.
"Hey, L/n, you okay?" Connor asked before they stepped out into the big chaotic room that got called ED.
Y/n nodded and gave a soft smile to the man beside her, Connor feelng his heart to flips as he got to see the woman's smile once more.
It had started when he began teaching her. The feelings. The feelings of wanting more than they could have.
The looks, smiles, brushes past their hands, everything.
It had to mean something, it did mean something. Atleast for Connor.
The way Y/n's head leaned against Connor's shoulder when they sat in the breakroom after a long surgery to just calm down before any paramedics ran in with a new patient.
The way Y/n smiled at him every morning, calling out a "Good morning, Rhodes." with the slight wave with her fingers.
It had to mean something, it had to have some meaning behind with that wasn't only platonic.
"Wanna take a break in the breakroom? I know that surgery was hard." Connor asked as they stepped into the ED.
"No, I'm okay, I promised April to help her with her patient." Y/n said with a smile before walking away to April who smiled and waved at her.
Connor sighed, knowing that Y/n could not be in good shape after that surgery, he just knew it but couldn't say anything.
He went off to do his own work, helping Natalie with a patient.
After some work with the patient, who was a young little girl who had started to throw up everything without any sign of sickness, Y/n and April walked over to Maggie to do some paper work.
"Oh, yeah, how did the surgery go?" April asked Y/n who stopped her writing, not ready for the question.
"It went.. It went terribly, I couldn't fit the stupid graft by the aorta and slowly but surely the woman died, the clamp on the aorta had accidentally ripped off something and blood got everywhere."
Maggie and April looked at each other in worry and looked at Y/n who continued writing on her paper work, trying to ignore the looks from the two women.
"The husband, Mr. Donawell, got angry at me and called me a murderer. Which I kinda understand." Y/n continued to ramble, turning the paper to continue writing.
"Hey, Y/n?" Maggie said, grabbing Y/n's attention.
"Oh, Dr. Rhodes cleared the feelings and Mr. Donawell calmed down." She explained with a small smile.
"No, Y/n, how are you feeling? The loss of a patient isn't something easy." Maggie asked, worry and empathy filling her eyes.
Y/n's smile faltered and she tried to bring it back up.
"I'm okay, really, it happens sometimes and I tried my best." She reassured with a slight smile, the women in front of her not believing it but not pushing on anymore.
"I'm gonna check on that little girl again." Y/n said as she completed the paperform, putting it back down on the desk before walking into the patient's small room.
"Hi, Lucy, Ms. Hadfelt." Y/n greeted the small girl and her mother who looked quite distressed.
"I got answer from your tests, you remember those small pricks you felt in your arm that Nurse April took?" She told Lucy who smiled and nodded.
"Well, we have found out that it is your stomach that has a little problem, it won't let your food melt down with your stomach acid, which means that it has no way of going down so it comes up instead, and you throw up." Y/n explained, Lucy nodding with some confusion in her eyes.
"But," Y/n looked at Ms. Hadfelt. ", this is fixed with medication. I will prescribe you a medication that will allow your stomach to do it's job."
Ms. Hadfelt grew a smile on her face and nodded, silently thanking Y/n who only smiled and nodded.
"So in only a few minutes, you and your mom can go home, and it will say on the medicine box how to take them but I would recommend she takes them for every meal, and if it doesn't get better, take two every meal."
The mom nodded and Y/n left with a slight bow in respect.
As she walked out, she accidentally walked into Connor, stumbling slightly in her walk.
"Oh- So sorry, Rhodes." She apologised with a smile.
"No worries, L/n." Connor answered, his hand on her shoulder to reassure her.
A slight spark went down Y/n's shoulder as she felt Connor's calloused hand on her shoulder.
"Hey, our shifts are over soon, wanna go to Molly's after? I can buy you a drink if you want to?" Connor asked, a small smile on his face.
The only thing Y/n wanted to do was go home and cry her eyes out, but the smile on Connor's face made her think otherwise.
"Yeah, sure." Y/n answered, her smile never leaving her face as Connor nodded and walked away.
Y/n walked back to April and Maggie, her smile still there as she leaned against the desk.
"Did Ms. "I promise I have no feelings for him" just get asked out on a date?" Maggie teased Y/n who's smile turned into an annoyed expression.
"Shut up, this isn't a date, we usually hang out like that you know." Y/n argued back while April and Maggie giggled for themselves.
"And I promise you, nothing will happen on this so called 'date'." Y/n promised them both, pointing a finger at them before looking up at the clock up on the wall.
"And now my shift is done, see you guys tomorrow." She bid goodbye for them both before walking into the breakroom, opening her locker.
As she was changing her shoes, Connor walked in, a smile now on his face as he noticed Y/n.
"You still up for Molly's?" Connor asked and Y/n smiled and nodded, pulling her coat on.
"See you again in maybe 30 minutes?" Y/n said and Connor agreed, walking with her out from the hospital into the parking lot.
"Well, see you." Connor said to Y/n who waved to him before sitting down into her car, driving off back to her apartment while Connor stood there, his smile never leaving his face.
About 30 minutes later, Y/n walked into the bar, now new clothes on that wasn't her scrubs.
She wore a simple black short skirt, a white top and an oversized leather jacket on top.
It was an evening in the late spring, so thankfully the outfit didn't make her too cold.
Y/n looked around and saw that Connor sat by the bar, wearing a pair on grey pants with a brown sweater, his hand holding a half empty glass of some alcoholic drink.
Y/n walked up to him and sat beside him, smiling.
"You started to drink without me?" She teased Connor who turned to look at her, his expression turning to a happy and slightly surprised one.
His eyes wandered down to check her outfit out and he felt his body just melt, piece by piece, just by looking at her.
"You look good." He complimented her with a smile, making Y/n just want to pull Connor into a makeout session, right then and there.
"You too, Rhodes." She said back to him, watching as the bartender walked up to the pair.
"Well, hello L/n." He greeted Y/n who only nodded back at him. "What can I get you this fine evening."
Y/n chuckled and told her usual order and he nodded, starting to make the drink.
"Hey, I know you're not in the best state after that surgery." Connor blurted out, making Y/n lose her smile.
"It doesn't matter, things like that happen sometimes, and that's okay." Y/n muttered, smiling at the bartender who handed her the drink.
"It does matter, I worry about you and I don't want you walking around with a burden like that." Connor told Y/n who focused on her drink in front of her.
"I know you. I know that something like that hit a spot in your mind and isn't going to leave if we don't talk about it."
"Well, what is there to talk about? Huh? Are you going to tell me that it was all my fault and I could've done it so much better and that Downey will never see me as his head surgeon anymore and I won't get a promotion?" Y/n snapped back, making Connor hitch his breath in shock.
"Y/n. It's not your fault." Connor sighed, trying to speak in a calm tone.
"What?-"
"It's not your fault." Connor interrupted Y/n who stared at Connor in a mix of shock, anger and sadness.
"No, it's-"
"It. Is. Not. Your. Fault." He said again, his hand now on Y/n's, he could now feel how it shook in stress.
Y/n stared at Connor who looked at her with empathy and sadness.
She couldn't say anything, her eyes starting to burn with tears taht threatened to fall down.
Connor stood up from his bar stool and slowly embraced the shaking woman in front of him, her feelings now more open than they ever had been.
Y/n softly began sobbing, her hands gripping onto Connor's sweater, her tears staining the wool as she sobbed into his shoulder.
"You're okay, it's okay." Connor whispered as Y/n began slowly to calm down, her head lifting upwards toward his.
Her eyes connected with his, hers covered in a layer of tears that had yet to fall down her cheeks, other wise to Connor's that showed empathy and love.
"Y/n, I am here for you. I will listen to all of your problems, speak about your gossip or anything your heart desires. I have loved you for so long that I would never find you weak or ill for anything." Connor confessed, not really thinking this was the way he would confess.
Y/n stared up into his eyes, a little shock in them now.
"You.. You love me?" She asked softly, Connor nodding while smiling softly.
"I'm glad, because I love you too." Y/n whispered, leaning up to Connor and softly pushing her lips onto his.
Holy shit. Was what Connor thought, his lips meeting hers too.
It was like fireworks all around them, like party poppers popping every second as Y/n's hand slid up to his face to cup it while they kissed even more deeper.
After some seconds, they parted, small smiles on their faces.
"Wow." Connor muttered, making Y/n chuckle and pull him into a hug, now without any tears, nor any shaking hands.
Promises… Promises
Tumblr media
Warnings: hurt, angst, tw?
Requested: yes, anonymous
Natalie x reader
Summary: Y/N and Natalie are a couple and one day Y/N is hurt being a CPD officer, and brought to Chicago Med.
“I don’t want to be awake”
you moaned while moving out of Natalie’s warm embrace.
“Work demands you be there by how much they’re calling you” Natalie replied
“Sorry” you replied while changing into your work clothes. “It’s okay baby, I was joking around.”
“You got Owen?” “Yep I do”
“Alright, I got to go” you said while grabbing your badge and gun from your safe. “Love you.” You said as you kissed Natalie’s forehead.
“Love you too y/n. Be safe please”
“I will, I promise” you replied
**Natalie POV**
“Morning Will” I pronounced as a I walked into the doctors lounge.
“Morning Natalie. How is Y/N and Owen?”
“They’re good. Y/N had work early this morning, so I had to call in the babysitter earlier than expected” I let out a sigh
“Y/N has been working quite a lot huh” will said out loud.
“Yes, but it’s her job” I reply as I smile at him and walk out to get to my first patient.
“Mags, who’s the first”
“You have a 82 year old male. Mr. Simon his care facility brought him in for suspected syphilis”
I sigh “third one’s a charm right?” I say as I grab the tablet from Maggie and go to meet Mr. Simon.
“Treatment four Nat have fun” Maggie winked
**Time Skip**
“All right Mr. Simon, you do have syphilis I will be prescribing you some antibiotics for your nurse to give you to help with this ok. Any questions for me before I discharge you?”
“No doctor, I appreciate you taking care of my old self.”
I smile and nod “have a good day Mr. Simon. Oh- and one more thing use protection and check for any STD’s next time ok?”
“I will” Mr. Simon says as he snickers.
As I walk out of treatment four there is a big trauma incoming.
**Incoming**
“What do he have?” Maggie’s said as she stood to the paramedics
“Y/N Y/L/N CPD officer shot while raiding a home. 3 gsw’s one to the thigh almost hit the femoral artery; have a tourniquet on it. One to the chest, and one to the abdomen. 90/60 BP, gcs is 3, intubated on scene. Heart rate is 50 and sats are 87%”
“Will you’re up you’re going to Baghdad” Maggie yelled
“Follow me please” Will ran with the paramedics”
“MAGGIE!!” I just heard
“Natalie, breathe she’s in good hands with Rhodes” “go sit down”
**Conner POV**
“Natalie” I say as I walk into the waiting room
“Conner how is she?”
“Nat let’s sit, it’s a lot okay”
“Oh gosh”
“Breathe, she’s okay. She had a lot of internal damage. One Bullet hit her aorta, another tore part of her femoral artery, and the third ruptured her spleen.” “I went in, and repaired everything. The final thing is I’ve put her in an induced coma to give her heart and lungs the time to rest. She’ll be on a vent, and we’ll evaluate in about a week.”
“Okay? You feeling up to seeing her?” I said in response to Natalie crying.
“I promise you I will do everything in my power to give her the best care, and I’ll be personally coming in every 20 minutes”
“Okay” Natalie said through her sniffles
“Okay let’s go see her”
**Natalie POV**
“She’s so tiny and vulnerable” I look at y/n
“With the vent and the central line it looks so bad” I say rubbing Y/N’s hand slowly
“Nat it’s okay her body needs this rest okay”
“Okay….. can I stay with her?”
“Yes Natalie, I’m going to get Maggie to get you some food and blankets and your backup clothes to use okay”
“Thank you Conner”
Conner smiles and walks out
“I love you baby so much. Y/n you have to fight for me okay?”
“I know you can hear me baby. Please fight Y/N I can’t be alone. I love you so much”
Note: there may be a part 2 to this. Maybe… just maybe I’ll hit you with a little more fluff and angst. Love ya!
Survivors - Will Halstead x Reader
Tumblr media
Trigger Warning: Mentions of sexual assault
Will struggles to deal with the aftermath of you being assaulted and left for dead.
Part Two: Where You Go, I Go
There were fairy lights in the trees outside the hospital. They lit up the outside area of the hospital beautifully against the dark night sky. He knew you loved sitting out here, drinking coffee on the memorial bench underneath them. The breeze was chilly, causing goosebumps to erupt all over his bare arms as he sat there and put his head in his hands, his fingers raking through his thick red curls.
He was finding it hard to control all the emotions that were wrestling inside him. He wanted to be out there, finding the bastard who'd left you breathless and bleeding, he wanted to tear the piece of scum to pieces with his bare hands and toss him into the sea. There were a million different torturous things he imaged doing to the piece of shit that had left you barely hanging on.
On the other hand, he didn't want to leave you alone here at the hospital. He didn't want you to wake up frightened, thinking that he didn't love you. He needed to be there when you woke up so that you would understand that you were safe.
He didn't know what to do, with your father was in Antigua all the important decisions were left in his hands and he found that he didn't want to make them. He had had to give permission for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner to administer the rape kit because he was listed as your next of kin. He despised the idea of violating you all over again but he understood the necessity. The evidence degraded the longer they waited. He had held your hand tightly in his own as the nurse had gently gone through the procedure. You shouldn't have to endure something like that alone. He was thankful you had been unconscious.
The bench vibrated as someone took the seat alongside him. He glanced up surprised to see Maggie sitting there, her palms pressed between her knees. Maggie handed him the steaming cup of coffee wordlessly. Will wrapped his hands around it grateful. He had no idea how long the two of them sat there in silence before Maggie broke it.
"She will wake up you know. She's strong and fierce. She will fight this."
Will stared into the contents of his coffee cup. He couldn't believe that today had happened. He knew better than most people how life could change in such a short space of time, but it was still terrifying. He kept thinking back to last night on the beach, your words haunted him as they sat there underneath the stars.
"I didn't believe her when she said she thought someone had been in the apartment. I told her she was acting like a silly little girl." Will admitted abruptly, rubbing the bridge of his nose with the thumb and forefinger of his left hand.
"You couldn't know that it was true." Maggie said honestly. "You can't keep blaming yourself for everything that happens, the guilt will eat you up inside and frankly she doesn't need that right now. She needs you to be there and be strong..." Maggie trailed off, rubbing her hands together agitated as she bowed her head forward. "She'll need someone to lean on, stuff like this. She won't be able to do it on her own."
"Maggie. I will do whatever I can to get her through this, I just don't know how. How do you move on from something like this? How do you deal with it?" Will gestured with his coffee cup before shaking his head. "I don't know how I can help, short of putting the bastard who did this in the ground all I can do is be there for her."
"I'll help." Maggie said, reaching out and taking Will's hand lightly in hers.
Will curled his fingers around hers and squeezed tightly.
"I can't lose her." Will said, his voice trembling just a little.
"She will get through this Will." she said softly as the two of them rose to their feet. "You both will."
"We're survivors." Will agreed, draining the rest of his coffee and tossing the empty cup at the bin alongside the bench. "Surviving is what we do best."
Archer and Charles went against patients' wishes before so not judging Ripley quickly.
It's time to explore Charles mistakes as a young doctor too.
Why is Med forgetting Halstead was a surgeon before becoming an ER resident?
Ahmad has a lot to learn: manners, figure how to navigate hospital protocols and help patients without losing her license.
Marcel needs to be more firm with the residents. It's nice he's friendly, but them respecting his authority is more important.
Will had more experiences than Ahmad. Hope her character is more than being another Will.
Two Hearts, One Kiss
Tumblr media
Pairing: Will Halstead x Nurse! Hispanic! Reader
Summary: Your patient needed help, and there was only one person in the Med you could reach out to. After working for months at one of Chicago's top hospitals, you knew that was the best place to treat your patient - even if no one could know her name. Even after avoiding you for days, Will Halstead was the only one who could help you.
Author's note: this is the first request i've got in a while so thanks @zaidatorcuatomorgado for helping me write again
Warnings: (probably wrong) medical terms, a little bit of blood; this one is fluff tbh
The paramedics came through the emergency entrance with you following close behind. The woman lying on the stretcher, being carried along the corridor, was announced to the Chief of the ward.
–  62-year-old female, found unconscious inside her house. – the paramedic added.
– Pressure 7x4, 50 bpm, deep cut on forehead from a possible fall. – You took the lead from the medical first responders and reached out to the head nurse.
–Dr. Choi, Room 4. – Maggie said before you could stop her.
– Not him, please. – You were in the Med for a few months now, you knew how Choi would act. You needed somebody else, you needed him. - Get Halstead.
– What's the matter? – Maggie knew there was something wrong, you didn't make requests like that.
– Please, I'll explain later, just get Will. – He was the only one you trusted.
– Choi, hold up. Halstead, she's yours. – the doctors listened and obeyed Maggie right away.
– Thank you. – you squeezed the nurse's arm and ran to the room. Will had already transferred and examined the woman.
– No sign of concussion or brain damage. – he moved the flashlight away from the unconscious woman's eyes. – let's give her a liter of saline, x-ray, and a head CT. We need to find out what caused the fall.
– I'll take over – you said to the nurse in the room, who nodded and walked away promptly. Will continued to examine the patient while you cleaned your hands and put on your gloves.
– Was it you who found her? Did you notice anything?
– No, I just saw her slumped over and ran into her house.
– So you know her? – Fortunately, Will was too focused on looking for injuries on the woman to notice your hesitation. Still, your silence aroused suspicion and he raised his face to you.
– She is my patient. I need you to take care of her without asking questions.
– Y/n, that's not–
– Please – you approached him on an impulse; it didn't matter if things were awkward between you, you needed to help your patient. – her name can't go into the system.
– Why–
– Will! – he shut up immediately: he saw the worry in your eyes, he saw your fear.
He shook his head slightly, he was going to help you. You sighed with total relief, as if a ton had come off your shoulders.
– She has rheumatoid arthritis, but she has improved with physical therapy. I doubt it caused the fall.
– Does she take any medication?
– Just MTX.
– Right. – he stared at the woman lying on the bed and took a deep breath. – Order the tests and let's wait for the results. We'll find out what happened to her.
You smiled at him. He might not have answered your request to go out with him yet, but you knew he wouldn't deny help to a patient of yours.
– About the other night…– his words made your face burn immediately. Perhaps this was not the best time to have this conversation, but Will went on: – I was caught by surprise with your request and—
– Halstead, new patient, I need you in room 6. — Like an angel, Maggie appeared and cut him off: the doctor barely had time to reply and the head nurse was already pulling him away from you.
You were breathing more easily with his absence, at least you wouldn’t have to get a rejection after finding Mrs. Vasquez knocked out. You turned to the woman on the medical bedside and felt a tear run down your cheek. She was stable now, her prognosis was optimistic, but you could only think about her grandchildren. They would be terrified to know and to see their Abuela like                           this — no, no, you couldn’t let them see her like that. If anyone at the hospital figured out who the woman was, the kids would be brought up and the bills…Mrs. Vasquez could not afford the bills.
Her whole family would fail and split because you called 911.
– Y/n? – Maggie walked in: her voice was low and soft, way too delicate for a woman in charge of the emergence wing. Right now, she was approaching you like a friend, not like a boss. – Are you alright?
– Yeah, I’m just… — you cleaned your eyes. — in shock, I guess.
– Would you like to stay here until she wakes up? You’re not on shift.
– Yes! Thanks, Maggie.
The head nurse responded with a kind smile.
– I’ll try to contact her family, they should know she’s here. – she stepped aside and got ready to leave: the phone on her hand was ready to make all the necessary calls.
– Wait! – you reached her, preventing her from moving. Your eyes scanned the emergence wing before you went on: – Would you not..? – you whispered. – I don’t think she’s able to…pay for any of this.
– I’m sorry, Y/N, but you know we’re struggling, if they discover someone’s not paying I–
– I know. –  you had no other choice: – Put my name on the bills, I’ll pay for her, just…please, she can’t be on the system.
Maggie frowned at you. As always, she knew something was wrong, but she gave you a shot. She agreed and walked away without saying nothing.
You sighed again, but your chest was still tight: you could only truly relax once you knew Mrs.Vasquez was okay.
She’s been your patient for a year now. You started to work at the voluntary physiotherapy clinic as soon as you arrived in Chicago, and she was there. A working old lady raising three grandchildren by herself. She was exhausted and in physical pain — everyone would be in her place — but she was kind and happy, nonetheless. With your help and the treatment, she was getting better – now she could cook and sew much easier than before.  As a token of her gratitude, she frequently made you scarfs and empanadas. You were wearing one of her hand-made scarfs this morning, when you found her knocked out on the floor, bleeding.
God, you felt like crying, and you did. Helping people like her was what gave purpose to your life; losing her, being hands off like that…it was breaking your heart.
She had to get better.
And you would stay by her side until she did.
X
Nearly an hour has passed when Will came in with the results of the exams. You jumped off the chair and approached him:
– So? Why she fell?
– You can relax already, your patient’s going to be okay soon enough. – He smiled proudly. – She passed out because of a cardiac arrhythmia, caused by too much caffeine.
– Are you for real? – you choked a loud laughter, unable to believe him. – What about the CT? She’s fully ok?
– Yes, she only needed stitches. – your joy was contagious, and now Will was laughing too. – The saline and the rest will be good to her but…honestly, she can go as soon as she wakes up.
– Thank you so much! – you couldn’t help yourself: you ran over to him and hugged him in the middle of the room, in front of whoever that wanted to see. You squeezed him with all the strength you had and he, to your surprise, hugged you back.
And neither of you have drifted apart.
The only reason why you moved away was Mrs.Vasquez. Even with your head on his chest, you could hear the old woman grunting and moving on the bed.
– Señora Vasquez! – you helped her to sit up. – ¿Estás bien? ¿Me oyes?
– ¿Por qué no escucharía? – she was still recognizing where she was. You gave her some time to analyze the place and understand what happened. – Oh. – her eyes focused on Will. – ¿Es ese el guapo que te gusta?
She pointed at him and you turned red immediately. Will didn’t have to speak Spanish, he already understood what she said.
Again, he smiled proudly and stepped closer.
– Hello, I’m Will. Can you speak my language? – Mrs.Vasquez nodded. – Great. Can you tell me your name?
– Gloria Vasquez.
You stood silently as they talked.
– Have you consumed much coffee recently, ma'am?
She turned to you before replying him: – ¡Qué encantador! ¡Cuán educado es! – your face was burning. – Yes, doctor, the kids wanted to have a sleepover and…well, a lady like me needs extra help to keep up with them.
You held her hand tightly.
– You passed out because of it, Gloria, you know you can’t do things like this. You could’ve been so much worse and—
– Cálmate, querida. – she caressed your hand. – I will survive, won’t I, doctor?
– That’s right.
– That's what matters! – Gloria cheered, taking out a laughter from your worried expression. – Can we go now? – she came closer and whispered to you. – I have some interesting news for you.
– Really? You want to gossip now? – you shook your head as you walked away. – No way. I’ll fill out the documents and you will rest, ma’am. – you were smiling, but your words were serious: she had to stay still for a while. Only a fall and a cut on the head would make Gloria rest properly. In a really weird sense, what happened this morning would be good to her.
It was possible to hear Mrs.Vasquez's mumbles from the corridor, but you had to give her some time — and give yourself a break as well.
You got so preoccupied that you got exhausted. Your back and legs were sore as if you had just worked out, and the tiredness hit you know.
Will could see it in your face.
– I was going to tell her off about all the coffee but I’m pretty sure you’ll take care of it. – he joked as he came closer to you.
– I’m so sorry, Will. I've made a storm out of a glass of water and it was all because of a sleepover. – you laughed at yourself. – I feel a bit stupid right now.
– Don’t be. You did right, she had to come to the hospital.
– I’m not sure…It was too risky and…– You stopped talking. Shit. Will wasn’t supposed to know this.
The doctor frowned at you.
– Are you in trouble, Y/N?
You looked away immediately. You wanted to tell him — you trusted him enough to tell him – but the more people who knew, the more likely the Guardian Council would get involved and try to separate Gloria from her family. Maybe she wasn't supposed to take care of three kids by herself, but she was all they had – and vice versa. They were a family, regardless of the state's opinion.
Again, it was too risky for the Vasquez family.
– I can’t—
– It’s okay. – He cut you off, his voice had a tone you'd never heard before: too serious and worried. – I don’t need to know but…just answer me: can I help you, somehow?
You lifted your face to him – the question caught you by surprise. I shouldn’t — after all, this was all so typical of Will – but it did: his kindness surprised you. It always did.
It was one of the main reasons why you could help but feel better around him.
– You already did, Will. – you only noticed you were smiling when you saw his eyes dropping to your lips. Now he was smiling too. – Thank you again. – you stepped back. – See ya. – You were ready to go back to Gloria's room, but the world around you suddenly went dark, the ground seemed too far away and you felt your legs lose strength.
Will held you, preventing you from the fall.
– God, this is so cliché. – you grunted under your breath, but Will was able to hear you. Your faces were almost glued together, and you felt his laughter on your skin. – Mierda.
– Let me guess: you got so worried about Gloria that you forgot to eat.
You were already capable of standing by yourself, but his arms remained around you.
– You guessed right. – you didn’t try to move away from him.
– Is this a good time for dinner?
– I don't think the cafeteria has anything worthy of being called a dinner, but–
– No. – Will chuckled. His cheeks were completely red. He was the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen. – I mean, do you…Do you want to have dinner with me tonight? My shift will be over in a bit.
You smiled brightly, your whole body was burning up now but it felt good.
– So you finally made up your mind, uh? – unconsciously, you came closer to him. – You know, it’s rude to let a girl wait.
– Well, I got busy planning the most amazing date for the most amazing woman I’ve met. – you felt his breath on your skin. – And you haven't answered me yet. – his eyes fell to your lips again.
This time, you couldn’t force yourself to move away: in an impulse, you grabbed the back of his neck and kissed him.
His lips were softer than you'd imagined, but he was as passionate as you expected.
You only broke apart when you lost your breath.
Then you noticed that every nurse and doctor on the wing were cheering and watching.
What a first kiss.
– Love the way you say ‘yes’. – He whispered to you.
Will was breathless and happy, his hands were holding you with tenderness and warmth.
You couldn’t help: you kissed him again.
And, this time, you could even hear Gloria cheering from her room.
ok my meds are finally hitting so dopamine high, stick with me:
Maggie and Crockett get married. Not because they love each other but because they are quite genuinely the only two sane characters on the whole show and this way they can come home every night, eat a banging meal (they alternate days bc they can both cook like gods), drink red wine whiskey and bitch Abt literally every other person they know until bed time
Summary: During a snow day, you end up at the firehouse with your brother and extended family. After being led into a trap, you become hypothermic and your family has to try and save you.
Warnings: some language, mentions of past abuse (in a way), PTSD, claustrophobia, hypothermia
~~~~~~~~~~~
Some would say your childhood was unconventional at best, but you couldn’t have asked for a better one. Since you can remember, Matt Casey, your older brother, has taken care of you and so has the whole of firehouse 51. Since Matt and Kelly are such good friends, Kelly was named your godfather and Stella Kidd your godmother. Matt would entrust you with almost anyone in the house, but even after everything, Kelly and Stella are the only people he would want you to go to if anything happened to him.
Since it’s a snow day, you had to go to the firehouse with Matt. Not that you ever minded, even at the age of 15 you still get spoiled by all of your aunts and uncles. Cap and Tony are your prank buddies, which normally ends in a war against Hermann, Mouch, and Cruz. Violet, Stella, and Sylvie always make sure to spend some sort of girl time with you when you are at the firehouse, even though they are always doing girl trips and girl nights with you off shift. When Truck is gone, it’s an unspoken rule that either Kelly, Hermann, or Boden is in charge of you. If everyone has to leave the house at the same time, which didn’t happen often, you had to ride along, but you never got out at a site unless absolutely necessary. Most of the time, when there is nothing going on, you can be found lounging in one of the officers’ quarters. More likely than not, you are with Kelly playing “firecop”. You have thought about being a detective when you grow up, given the great relationship you now have with all of Intelligence and Trudy Platt, but when you grow up in a firehouse, you almost always follow in your family’s footsteps.
So far, nothing interesting has happened. A few black ice accidents and ambo calls, but nothing that required more than one or two units to leave the house at a time. Within the first 6 hours, you have pulled a couple pranks and watched Frozen just to sing the adult parody of Let It Go for Cap and Tony. You had just turned in for a nap in Kelly’s quarters when the tones went off.
“Truck 81, Squad 3, Engine 51, Ambo 61, Battalion 25. Warehouse fire at 6391 Daphne Drive.”
Kelly chuckled as you groaned, waiting for you to leave his quarters before running behind you. “Don’t worry kid. You can catch a few winks in the rig. I’ll have Cruz leave the truck running for you.” Kelly said, patting you on the shoulder and throwing you the extra bunker coat they leave out for you just incase.
“Thanks Sev.” You muttered, catching the coat in your arms before jumping into the rig behind Tony. You bundled up next to the window as Cruz sped behind Stella with the rest of the firehouse following behind. You tuned out the conversations happening around you and slipped in your headphones, turning the rest of your attention to the scenery.
Arriving at the scene, you took out your headphones as you listened to the rest of the guys chat. You were in the middle of nowhere. No smoke could be seen and no cars were in sight. It didn’t look like anyone has been out this way in a while.
“Well guys, get ready for anything. We will go in and do a sweep and then leave if it’s a false alarm.” Kelly said to the rest of the truck. “Princess, you stay put and stay warm. Keep an eye out.” Kelly said as the truck parked, turning around again to open his door and hop out.
Matt came and opened your door. “This shouldn’t take long. Stay here, okay?” Matt said, climbing up and placing his truck jacket on your lap.
You nodded and leaned your head back as you shoved your headphones back in. Music was your only choice seeing as you had no bars out this far. You were pretty surprised that the unit could be called out this far from the house, but you just went where you were told.
After about 30 minutes, you started getting an uneasy feeling. Everyone was inside and they should have been back by now. Using the limited training that squad has taught you, you jumped into the drivers seat to turn the rig off before going to the side compartment that held the spare gear. As you made your way to the compartment, you slipped and fell into a puddle that the engine melted, soaking your entire back and the back of your legs. You quickly shrugged it off and stood to grab your gear, more concerned about your family than how wet your clothes were or the faint ache in your head from it hitting the wet ground. If this was a gas leak or they were knocked out somehow, you needed to keep yourself safe and get inside to your family. Masking up outside the door, you shrugged on the spare bunker jacket and air tank before placing the mask over your head and walking in.
After walking through the first set of doors, you reached the second and opened the door to find a huge empty room. Looking around, you saw another door at the far edge of the room and cautiously walked towards it. As soon as you opened it, Kelly and Matt stumbled through.
“Oh my God. What happened?” You asked, grabbing onto Matt by the shoulders.
“The doors. It’s a trap. Go back and try that door!” Matt panted, exhausted from the exertion of trying to help Kelly pry open the door. The rest of the crew wandered back into the big room and followed you.
You pushed the door only to find it locked. “Matt.” You yelled, throwing your body into the door. “It won’t open!” You screamed, becoming frantic. You were all stuck in this big room. There was nothing but the people of firehouse 51 and you. The walls and floor were pure concrete and there was only a ventilation shaft on the top of the 20 foot ceiling. It had to lead to the outside because it was extremely cold.
“Hey hey hey. Breathe.” Kelly said, coming and grabbing you by the shoulders. “In and out.”
You have always had a fear of enclosed spaces. Recently, thanks to Dr. Charles, you found out that your mom locked you in a closest when she killed your dad. Matt found you later on during the day, thankful that it seemed that you were completely unaware of anything but that fact that you were tired, hungry, dirty, and scared. Though this room was much bigger, you were trapped once again.
You shook as Kelly handed you off to Matt. You cling to your brother as the rest of the group tried to figure a way out. “M-Matt. I’m s-so sorry.” You whimpered, burying your face into your brother’s chest.
Matt sighed and rubbed your back, swaying back and forth with you in his arms. “Hey now. None of that. You didn’t know.” Matt hummed, kissing the top of your head. “It’ll be fine. Once we are gone for long enough, someone will come looking. Until then, we are all here.” Matt whispered, opening his coat and pulling you in.
You were freezing. The bunker coat was decent at keeping the freezing air out, but unlike the rest of the house, you didn’t have on bunker pants or thick layers of clothing underneath the coat you were wearing. All you had on under the bunker coat was a pair of leggings and a long sleeved CFD shirt.
Kelly noticed you quacking in Matt’s arms and immediately took off his beanie, pulling it onto your head. “That’ll hold in some heat.” He said, standing closer to you and Matt to help provide some body heat.
“T-thanks.” You whispered, leaning back toward Kelly and pulling Matt along with you. Your panic jump started your shivering, and it didn’t seem to stop.
As you leaned back into Kelly, your wet hair made contact with his neck. “Jesus! Why are you wet?” Kelly asked, stepping back to grab your hair and wring out the water before tucking it into his beanie.
“I slipped. Fell I-into a p-puddle trying to s-s-save you g-guys.” You stuttered out, pulling yourself even closer to Matt.
“Wait. Let me get this straight.” Matt said, pulling you to arms length. “Under that coat you are soaking wet. In the middle of winter. And we are stuck in a freezing room.” Matt broke it down, looking between you and Kelly as he spoke.
You nodded. “Yep.” You replied, popping the p.
“Fuck.” Kelly muttered from behind you.
“Alright everyone. Listen up.” Boden yelled, catching everyone’s attention after he had a little time to think. “This was obviously a trap. We have no contact with the outside world, but dispatch led us here. Theoretically, someone should be coming to look for us pretty soon. It’s been about 45 minutes since we landed on scene and Kylie is still in the bullpen. So, everyone huddle up and stay warm until CPD arrives or whoever they send out for us.” Boden announced.
Everyone quickly huddled up, finding themselves in little groups that eventually morphed into everyone in the middle of the room. Matt, Kelly, Boden, Stella, Cruz, Violet, and Sylvie found themselves in the middle of the huddle with you straddling your brother’s lap in an attempt to get as close as possible. Matt and Cruz were sat back to back for support as you placed yourself practically in Matt’s coat for his body heat. Kelly and Stella shared a coat so that Kelly’s Jacket could be given to the paramedics since they only had on their winter coats. After another 30 minutes went by, they realized they had a bigger problem. You were quickly becoming hypothermic.
“M-matty. ‘M s-sleepy.” You slurred, burying your cold nose into your brother’s neck.
Matt and Kelly were instantly on high alert. You haven’t called Matt that in years. Not since you were at least 9. “Hey. I need you to stay awake. Okay? Stay with me.” Matt cooed, trying not to sound too desperate so that he wouldn’t scare you, but enough to keep you awake.
“Jus a quick n-nap. M’ head h-hurts.” You muttered, fumbling to get closer to your brother.
“No no no. Not yet. Just wait until we can get you out of here.” Matt said, pushing you slightly away as Kelly leaned over and checked your pulse.
“Matt, her pulse is slow.” Kelly whispered.
“Okay. Okay. Let me think.” Matt muttered, looking around.
Kelly was quicker. “Hang on. I have an idea. It’ll be a little awkward, but anything for her, right?” Kelly asked, looking Matt in the eyes.
Matt nodded. “Anything.”
Kelly moved quickly after that. He wrapped Stella up in her own bunker coat after taking yours. Kelly scooted as close to you as he could, hugging you from behind. Matt caught on quickly and hugged you close to his chest. Matt’s head was on one side of your head with Kelly on the other. The two bunker coats were pulled around your bodies. Everyone knew what was going on and was quick to huddle in, trying their best to create more body heat as you began slowly slipping in and out of consciousness.
After 2 hours in the 20 degree room, the Intelligence unit broke through the door. They had received some threatening messages the last few days against the CFD, but when they heard from Kylie that 51 went AWOL, they knew this had to be the work of whoever was making those threats. They moved as quickly as the could, bursting in just as you began to slip completely unconscious.
“5021 George. Missing are located. I repeat missing are located. One critical. Rolling the Ambo on sight. Close off all streets from here to Med.” Jay yells into his radio as he sees Kelly helping Matt get up with you limp in his arms.
Sylvie and Violet are already running for the ambo with Matt, Kelly, Stella, and Jay not far behind. You hang limp in your brother’s arms as he and Kelly call out to you, begging you to stay with them. Doors are held open and a path is quickly made to the ambo. Kelly helps Sylvie treat you as Violet speeds behind Jay, who is leading the escort for you to med.
“I’m barely getting a pulse. She isn’t protecting her airway. I have to intubate.” Sylvie yells, causing Violet to tell the same thing into her radio as Kelly grabs more trauma blankets and wraps you up in them. Once your intubated, Sylvie takes out her phone. “Mags. It’s Sylvie. I have Y/N Casey. She’s severely hypothermic. Not protecting her airway, weak pulse, temp of 94 and not rising with trauma blankets. You guys need to prep for her.” Sylvie instructed, letting Kelly take over bagging you so that she could check your airways. “She was soaking wet and possibly hit her head. We will need to cut off her clothes on arrival. Warm saline and blankets should do it once these clothes are off.” Sylvie replies to whatever Maggie was telling her. “ETA is 3 minutes” then she hangs up.
“Sylvie.” Matt pleas, looking at his girlfriend.
“We’ve got her Matt. Just a bit longer.” Sylvie placates, shooting him a small smile as she takes the bag back from Kelly.
Upon arrival to Med, Maggie and Conner throw the ambulance doors open and immediately help Sylvie and Kelly unload you. They quickly do as Brett previously instructed, running a few extra tests on you once the IV is placed, and then they leave Matt and Kelly alone with you.
“She’s gonna be alright man.” Kelly reassures, holding your hand on the opposite side of the bed that Matt is on. Kelly doesn’t look up, not able to bare the look of fear and guilt in Matt’s eyes.
“She should’ve stayed at the house. She’s old enough to be at the firehouse alone, plus Kylie was there and they could’ve just hung out.” Matt sighed, running a hand down his face. “She wouldn’t be in this situation if it wasn’t for me.” Matt sniffed, keeping hold of your hand.
Suddenly, you squeezed both your hands as your heart rate spiked and your eyes flew open. If it hadn’t have been for Kelly and Matt keeping your hands in theirs, you would have yanked your tube out.
“Sh Sh Sh. Sweetheart. It’s alright. Hang on.” Matt muttered, using a hand to pull your face to look toward him.
Kelly let go of your hand once Matt had your attention and met Maggie at the door. “She’s awake!” He exclaimed, catching the attention of Jay, Will, and Conner who were all talking behind the desk about what happened.
Conner ran in as Maggie silenced the machines. “She’s over breathing the tubes. Let me get that out. Hand on sweetie.” Conner soothed, pushing past Kelly and rushing to your side.
Maggie held a basin under your chin once Matt moved to the head of your bed. They all knew of your sensitive gag reflex, so this really wouldn’t be fun. “Deep breath.” Maggie instructed. Conner was quick to pull the tubing out and stepped back as you dry heaved over the basin Maggie held for you.
Will came up to Conner’s empty spot and rubbed your back as Maggie handed the basin to Matt so that he could get closer. “Breathe sweetheart. Just take some slow deep breaths.” Will coached, taking the cup of water from Kelly when you finally calmed down and held the straw for you to sip. “There you go. That’s it.” Will soothed, nodding at Matt to put the basin away.
Once you were calm, Jay, Will, Conner, and Maggie all filed out of the room. Jay promised to give the house an update as he walked away, kissing you on the cheek. Kelly and Matt settled on either side of you again, Matt moving into the bed with you.
“God. You scared the hell out of me.” Matt muttered, pulling you into his side.
“What even happened?” You asked, looking between the eyes of your scared godfather and brother.
“Well, we were trapped. You got stuck with us, but before coming in, you slipped and hit your head in a puddle. You were soaking wet and went hypothermic on us.” Kelly explained, rubbing his face and sitting back as he watched your reaction.
Your eyes went wide. “Holy shit.”
“Language.” Matt scolded lightly, using your favorite marvel character’s word against you.
You chuckled, snuggling into Matt. “Guess I’m not Elsa after all. The cold does bother me.” You joked, causing Matt and Kelly to laugh.
“Too soon.” Matt said, though he was still chuckling.
“Definitely too soon.” Kelly agreed. “I’m gonna go get Boden and Stella. They were raising hell trying to get in here earlier.” He said, getting up and kissing the top of your head. “I’m glad your okay. Love you princess.”
“Love you too Uncle Kelly.” You beamed, snuggling closer to your brother as you both watched him leave to gather the rest of your family.

The Halstead Sisters
Tumblr media
So this was not a prompt I was expecting to get, but I hope you enjoy it anon! Set way, way into the future of It Was a One Night Stand Until I Woke Up Next to You with Jay and Kim's daughters. In this universe, Kim still adopts Makayla, but with Jay instead of Ruzek.
Tumblr media
“Mom would say you’re acting like Dad.” Makayla sang into Penny’s ear, trying to ease her sister’s rigidness as she helped her little sister walk into the ED of Chicago Med. She waved a little at the head of the hospital, Mrs. Lockwood before she lowered Penny into a wheelchair. “Honestly Detective Penny Halstead, you dodge bullets for a living and you're scared to go to the doctor? When Uncle Will and I are both doctors?”
“Dr. Ward?” Even though Mak’s name had been officially changed to Ward-Halstead when Mom and Dad had adopted her, (Honestly, she couldn’t remember much of her childhood before that except for the odd night terror that still lingered in her subconscious. At least according to their head of psychiatry, Dr. Reese) she went by Dr. Ward at the hospital to keep the confusion down with her Uncle Will. She turned to see Mrs. Lockwood looking a little concerned. “Is your sister okay?”
“I’m okay Mrs. Lockwood. It’s just a little stomach ache. My big sister is just being overly cautious.” Penny assured Makayla’s boss, even though she was doubled over in pain in the wheelchair. Makayla rolled her eyes as she shook her head slightly.
“Eyes,” Penny scolded lightly, giving the perfect imitation of their mother before the charge nurse: Terrence Boden came to wheel her to a treatment room.
“Can you page one of the Dr. Rhodes? I can’t remember if it’s Reese or Lucas that’s on call tonight, but I think it’s possible appendicitis, but I couldn’t formally diagnose it.”
“Terrence, page Dr. Rhodes senior. Tell him it’s an emergency. If Dr. Ward’s diagnosis is correct, I want the hybrid OR prepped and ready to go just in case.”
“Got it,” Terrance nodded, handing Penny off to another nurse as he went to grab the ED phone. Makayla turned to her boss, “You think we can’t wait?”
Mrs. Lockwood pushed a greying lock of hair out of her eyes. Her hair had just started to grow back after her last round of chemo therapy. “I’ve learned with appendicitis cases, it’s best not to try and push it. Do you know how long she has been like this?”
“The person she had been seeing lately, called me a little while earlier. Said I might want to check on her, because Penny wasn’t listening to them about going to the hospital so I don’t know.”
“Best to air on the side of caution then.”
