I'm a firm defender of Arkham being terrible. The worst place on Earth. This place is clearly making everyone worse.

Give me Jonathan Crane loving how cruel and lax one could get with the "patients" at Arkham as he tested his toxin only for him to realize that the same "treatment" would be gave to him as he is finally caught by Batman. Jonathan who was one of the doctors who signed authorizing eletroshock "therapy" because he didn't care either way only for years later see himself being dragged to the eletroconvoulsive room.

Give me Harvey Dent trying to use his lawyer knowledge to protect himself and his friends by mentioning how solitary confinament against mentally ill people is not allowed on the state of New Jersey only for the guards/doctors to smile cruely and say "oh but this isn't solitary confinament it is *insert buzzword for solitary confinament that makes it legal*"(and yes prisons do that irl).

Harley painfully trying to explain both as doctor and as patient that inhumane treatment of inmates was scietifically proven to only make them more violent only to be ignored because "don't the guards deserve revenge" or some similar bullshit.

Ivvy who just wants her plants. Who gets physically sick when she can't get close to the green. But she can't have even sunshine because they specially discriminate against metahumans. And what if she uses her powers? Same for Music Maister except is worse because it is his voice! They even take Freezes suit away the first times but when they realize he will just die he just gets an special room that is basically temperature zero solitary but don't worry is for his own good.

All while doing human experimentation with Clayface because he is a meta anyway and honestly does he even count as human? And of course let's not forget Killer Croc that gets to be arrested in a cell on the fucking sewers. Yes it does not have basic sanitation whatsoever and yes Waylon deserves better.

Jervis who gets punished for daring saying they have no respect for the human mind. And King Tut who is mocked for his delusions instead of helped in any way.

Joker who spends more time in solitary than with actual people to the point is very likely that he was actually sane before Arkham and just an evil clown.

Riddler who spends most of his stay just drugged out of his mind because he talks to much and both the nurses and the guards find him annoying and isn't the silence best for everyone? And if him (or anyone who is reciving too much medication or the wrong meds) gets an addiction, well is not their problem.

And of course the more important part: Bruce who has no clue what is happening until Joan Leland enters the picture and contacts him for help because it doesn't matter if they are all criminals they are people and she is going to do her job (and Bruce Wayne is the only donor that cares). Cue to an horrifyied Bruce questioning his former stance on crime and getting ready to help make Gotham a place were rehabilitation is truly possible.

Hell yeah! Had an awesome find at a thrift shop today - A 1929 Southwestern Bell Telephone technical manual and installation guide for phones of the era.

Maybe you're asking why I think this is awesome? Haha. That makes sense - Well, first of all, I -live- vintage stuff. Antiques, old books, weird ephemera of the past. This definitely fits in with all of that, and has a gorgeous, punched leather cover with the gold stamping. Such a slick piece of history.

Second, I'm an old computer nerd cat. Back in the early '90s, I was a phone phreak - a phone hacker back before mobile phones and even alphanumeric pagers were a thing. It was in these days that "Ma Bell" (Southwestern Bell) was a big Queen on the scene, in her prime.

What were common phreaker practices back in the day? Well, it was all about exploration and curiosity. We would wardial (using our home landline connections and modems to dial a huge list of numbers in a row to try and find systems on the other end rather than regular phones - I'd leave it on all day and come back with a shorter list of various systems to dial in and play around on), we would build blue (and other color) boxes from RadioShack parts to use payphones to make free calls and do all sorts of rad tricks, we would prank folks that deserved it or use said tricks to disrupt schools and business, we would navigate voicemail systems and change automatic messages, and we would generate credit card numbers (which was incredibly easy back in the day) to make free calls to our first girlfriends in Canada. Well, that last one was mostly a me thing, haha.

Basically, payphones and early phone systems were a wonderful, incredible playground for me and I have SO many fond memories of these times. To have a book like this in my hands feels like I just looked inside the Ark of the Covenant and instead of melting my face off, it just glowed real bright and whistled a 2600hz tone sweetly into my ears.

This has so many cool photos like the ones above, and lots of radical technical diagrams, too.

As a bonus, there are hand-typed notes from a division head telephone engineer that wrote about systems they were building in Galveston, TX in the '60s:

Anyways, this is such a cool relic and I'll probably not be able to bring myself to sell it.

Dappy!verse lore Mad hatter

The life of Jervis tetch, the mad hatter, is one almost literally haunted by misfortune. But this unhappy life didn’t start out tragic. He was a bright kid and while only in his early adult years was working under his family’s technology company to create a neurological device. His work helped expand the company’s medical devices and patents but none of that seemed to matter to his parents as they had him lobotomized and disowned him for falling in love with ‘the wrong woman’.

But to his wife, Alice, it didn’t matter. Their vows to be together in sickness and in health held strong. She helped him get physical and psychiatric therapy and even a part time job. After a year or two of being happily married Alice became pregnant. However about five months into the pregnancy there were complications and they rushed to the hospital trying to save not only Alice but their daughter as well.

In the end neither survived and the tragedy left Jervis in a state of disassociation. He would begin to imagine himself as a character from Alice’s favorite story, Alice in wonderland. He became delusional and insisted that his Alice was just off and would return to wonderland and him eventually. He even began insisting he kept seeing the Cheshire’s smile following him like a shadow.

After Alice’s death, the rest of the Tetch family finally gave a shit about him and started just paying for at least some of his living experiences but kept him cut off, eventually just admitting him to Arkham. As although he was delusional and out of touch with reality, he was seen as a liability to the company.

Eventually they released him, believing there was nothing more they could do, his delusions weren’t treatable and the asylum was overflowing with worse cases than his. No matter how much he cried about the things that haunted him or how he just wanted his Alice, they would sternly tell him that there was nothing haunting him, ghosts weren’t real, and that his wife was dead. No matter how much he begged for help in his ramblings they wouldn’t pay him any mind, oftentimes neglecting him until he was released.

Jervis was a street performer and fortune teller at the Haley circus. However with his monotone voice with the tendency to speak in rhymes or quotes and his emotional detachment Ostracized him, some were kind, if only out of pity. It was a rare sometimes when he preformed with the rest of the circus, usually filling in for a contortionist as he was incredibly flexible. Jervis refused to talk about his past while at the circus, when he’d reflect on it he’d often stare at nothing and lash out.

When the Grayson Tragedy happened he was one of the first to be blamed, without going to a proper trial he was sent back to Arkham where he met Jonathan and slowly embraced the violent tendencies and nonsensical behaviors he often tried to hide.

It is finals week here at the University of Iowa! Here is your reminder to make sure to take some breaks-perhaps with a nice cup of tea.

This little book has some nice tips for how to make a good pot of tea, and not, as the first page says, "lukewarm and tasteless."

If you are more of a snacks person, make sure to check out the Study at the Stanley event happening right next to the library this week for some free treats. Similar events are happening throughout campus, such as at the IMU so keep an eye out for one that works for you!

We hope your hot drinks can be a nice break this week, and you don't need this kettle to frantically caffeinate at 2am!
