"rn I feel like reading about someone's quiet daily life, maybe a diary or letters, set in a place or context I don't know much about, without turmoil or tragedy" oh! do you have any recommendations for books like this?
This is one of my favourite types of books! Here are 30(ish) recs...
May Sarton's The House by the Sea or Plant Dreaming Deep
Gyrðir Elíasson's Suðurglugginn / La fenêtre au sud (not translated into English unfortunately!), also Bergsveinn Birgisson's Landslag er aldrei asnalegt / Du temps qu'il fait (exists in German too)
Gretel Ehrlich's The Solace of Open Spaces, which iirc was originally written as journal entries and letters before being adapted into a book
Kenneth White's House of Tides: Letters from Brittany and Other Lands of the West
Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book
The Diary of a Provincial Lady, E. M. Delafield
Growing Up with the Impressionists: The Diary of Julie Manet
Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim (do not read if you don't like flowers)
The Road Through Miyama by Leila Philip (I've mentioned it before, it feels like this gif)
The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, I keep recommending this one but it's so nice and I love snails
Epicurean Simplicity, Stephanie Mills
The Light in the Dark: A winter journal by Horatio Clare
The Letters of Rachel Henning
The letters of Tove Jansson, also The Summer Book and Fair Play
The diary of Sylvia Townsend Warner—here's an entry where she describes some big cats at the zoo. "Frank and forthcoming, flirtatious carnivores, [...] guttersnipishly loveable"
Tumblr media
The Letters of Rachel Carson & Dorothy Freeman were very sweet and a little bit gay. I mostly remember from this long book I read years ago that Rachel Carson once described herself as "retiring into her shell like a periwinkle at low tide" and once apologised to Dorothy because she had run out of apple-themed stationery.
Jane Austen's letters (quoting the synopsis, "Wiser than her critics, who were disappointed that her correspondence dwelt on gossip and the minutiae of everyday living, Austen understood the importance of "Little Matters," of the emotional and material details of individual lives shared with friends and family")
Madame de Sévigné's letters because obviously, and from the same time period, the letters of the Princess Palatine, Louis XIV's sister-in-law. I read them a long time ago and mostly I remember that I enjoyed her priorities. There's a letter where she complains that she hasn't received the sausages she was promised, and then in the next paragraph, mentions the plot to assassinate the King of England and also, the Tartars are walking on Vienna currently.
Wait I found it:
Tumblr media
R.C. Sherriff's The Fortnight in September (quoting the author, "I wanted to write about simple, uncomplicated people doing normal things")
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith
Pond, Claire-Louise Bennett
Rules for Visiting, Jessica Francis Kane
The following aren't or aren't yet available in English, though some have already been translated in 5-6 languages:
ツバキ文具店 / La papeterie Tsubaki by ito Ogawa
半島へ / La péninsule aux 24 saisons by Mayumi Inaba
Giù la piazza non c'è nessuno, Dolores Prato (for a slightly more conceptual take on the "someone's everyday life" theme—I remember it as quite Proustian in its meticulousness, a bit like Nous les filles by Marie Rouanet which is much shorter and more lighthearted but shows the same extreme attention to childhood details)
Journal d'un homme heureux, Philippe Delerm, my favourite thing about this book is that the goodreads commenter who gave it the lowest rating complained that Delerm misidentified a wine as a grenache when actually it's a cabernet sauvignon. Important review!
Un automne à Kyôto, Corinne Atlan (I find her writing style so lovely)
oh and 西の魔女が死んだ / L’été de la sorcière by Kaho Nashiki —such a little Ghibli film of a book. There's a goodreads review that points out that Japanese slice-of-life films and books have "a certain way of describing small, everyday actions in a soothing, flawless manner that can either wear you out, or make you look at the world with a temporary glaze of calm contentment and introspective understanding [...]"
I'd be happy to get recommendations in this 'genre' as well :)

Henry Winter, flirting
The first day of his visit to Francis’s country house Richard had a little voyage with Henry and Camilla in a boat. And here we have this introduction to Henry’s habits:
“He had a habit, as I was later to discover, of trailing off into absorbed, didactic, entirely self-contained monologues, about whatever he happened to be interested in at the time"
Richard was wrong, of course. Henry’s monologues were not ‘entirely self-contained’, they had particular purpose — at least, two of them were an instrument of mild pressure on Camilla, including this one which Richard heard during their voyage:
"That day he was talking about Elizabeth and Leicester, I remember: the murdered wife, the royal barge, the queen on a white horse talking to the troops at Tilbury Fort, and Leicester and the Earl of Essex holding the bridle rein… Camilla, flushed and sleepy, trailed her hand in the water… It was many years later, and far away, when I came across this passage in The Waste Land: Elizabeth and Leicester beating oars…”
T. S. Eliot left notes for these lines of his poem, citing History of England:
Tumblr media
Author of this letter, Alvaro de la Quadra, was a Spanish diplomat and Catholic clergyman, he apparently had a right to marry a couple. For many years Leicester was queen’s favourite and suitor for her hand, but she didn’t want to marry — didn’t want to share her power with anyone, and used her claimed virginity as a political asset. Eventually, Leicester got tired of waiting, and married another woman, which broke the queen's heart.
In view of these facts, the boat scene in TSH looks so ironic. Richard’s surname, Papen, means ‘priest, cleric’ in North German, and he also was a foreign figure in their group, like that Spanish bishop in England. However, Richard wasn't able to marry anyone.
I guess, in such a manner Henry was telling Camilla: "I’m ready to be with you right here, now. But don’t make me wait for too long". And Camilla was flushed, because she understood this reassurance mingled with warning.
Another instance of this mild pressure was quoting passages about Emma Bovary, whose chaotic love choices ruined her life: Sa pensée, sans but d'abord, vagabondait au hasard, comme sa levrette, qui faisait des cercles dans la campagne… “Her thoughts were wandering at first without any purpose” — could it mean "Camilla, make up your mind, or you’ll end up like madame Bovary''?
From Henry’s point these monologues were probably a sort of flirting, an indirect way to show romantic interest towards Camilla.
Come on, Henry, why spend so many words, when you can say Cubitum eamus?

some more random hcs!!
bc im going to be away from my pc for like a week and wont be able to write until i get back home :')
please enjoy some more poly earth champs 😌 (under the cut bc idk how long this is going to be- update: it's long :))
raiden picks up sayings and swears from each of his bfs- the first thing he picked up was kenshi's small curses in japanese, to which kenshi, when he first heard, gasped and asked "who taught you that?!?" before realizing raiden was repeating what kenshi had said a few (thousand 🙄✋️) times before
raiden also picks up johnny's internet lingo/slang and sometimes uses it- also picked up the "get in the bed" jokes from johnny (ie, "i'll show you (insert adjective here), get in the bed")
lao and raiden already talk like they're the same person, but raiden sometimes mimicks how lao says things- like tone, intonation, sometimes will even pitch his voice to match lao's
kung lao is a fiend when it comes to video games- has the most number of smash bros wins and wears that crown with pride (lao mains king dedede and kirby, johnny plays king k rool and bayonetta, raiden plays ice climbers and pikachu, and kenshi plays mr game n watch (theres a blind joke in there somewhere) and luigi)
kenshi actually really likes playing games- he's a very playful and coy person at heart and when he's comfortable his cheeky nature appears and always gets his bfs to laugh and swoon- he's also very funny when he's comfy
when johnny gets super comfy, he coos similar to a pigeon- it's always quiet and usually unintentional but whenever one of his bfs ctach the sound they melt- kenshi rumbles when he's comfy, almost like a purr before it trails into a sigh (and then a nap), lao stretches out and does this minute long sigh, and raiden grumbles before he fully settles
their coffee/tea preferences!! johnny needs his coffee, and he usually does it without syrups- just black coffee with extra espresso shots or a plain latte- johnny got lao into coffee but lao likes the fun syrups a lot and really loves when johnny makes him caramel macchiatos- raiden and kenshi are the resident tea drinkers 😌 raiden drinks mostly green tea since it's a nice boost for him in the morning, but kenshi has discovered london fogs and he cant go back- he saves his green teas for the afternoon or evening when he wants that lil boost
kenshi and johnny are both fantastic cooks, but raiden and lao can bake like no one's business- raiden really enjoys making bread and lao likes making cookies- often they can be found gossiping with sugar and butter beating in the stand mixer
kenshi will make ramen for his bfs during winter or when one of them is sick- it's his family's recipe and he's perfected it
johnny has the singing voice of someone on radio in the 40's and all of his bfs swoon whenever they catch him singing, especially when it's later in the evening and johnny is dancing in the kitchen to sinatra
raiden plays the kalimba!! he knows all sorts of songs from howl's moving castle to claire de lune and he usually plays in the afternoon- kenshi will always smile when he's drinking tea in the living room and hears the soft tinkling from upstairs
favorite sodas!! lao loves dr pepper- johnny is a coke drinker through and through, raiden likes sprite and ginger ale, and kenshi usually gets root beer or fruity sodas
the first time johnny took kenshi to a Mitsuwa the man was skeptical, but he found it had a lot of stuff he missed from home- johnny would've bought the whole store if it made kenshi happy
johnny begged madam bo for a few of her recipes (lao and raiden's favs) and he spent weeks with her near perfecting them before he cooked them for lao and raiden at home- they both cried (and so did johnny)
when kenshi is off around the world working with jax, lao will call him spontaneously just to fill him in, usually when johnny and raiden are napping or when he really misses kenshi- sometimes kenshi can hear how much lao misses him even though he doesnt say it :(( he always promises he'll be home soon and will blow a kiss through the phone
johnny has a huge walk in closet that he encourages his bfs to use also- johnny loves when any of his bfs "accidently" grab one of his shirts and wear it for a day- they all end up wearing each other's clothes anyway
raiden and lao are plant dads- they have a lucky bamboo plant in the kitchen and a few trees and a mint plant scattered through out the house- there's also eucalyptus in their giant shared bathroom which johnny cannot live without now that he has it
kenshi is the reason the other three love the smell of incense- kenshi used to burn some whenever he was really stressed (like once a week to a month) and he always smelled like incense- now his bfs will burn some when they miss him
johnny loves when his bfs sleepily talk to him in their native languages- he's picked up a bit from each of them and can make out a few sentences but really just loves how they sound-
johnny does math for fun (phd in quantum mechanics) and sometimes his bfs will find notes around the house of numbers and equations that mean nothing to them- but they keep a pile in a drawer somewhere bc they like johnny's loopy hand writing
johnny will slip into german when he's drunk- like full accent and everything- he's barely conversational in german sober though so when he watches videos of himself the next morning he has no idea what he's saying
kenshi hates bugs- like cant stand roaches or spiders- for the longest time johnny dealt with them for him when they lived together
lao makes fun of kenshi for jumping or getting anxious around spiders and roaches but he also gets jumpy and anxious around spiders and roaches
kenshi has his phone auto read texts and johnny will send awful texts when the house is in dead silence- like johnny will be upstairs or in the bathroom and kenshi will be in the kitchen or living room making food or relaxing and suddenly his phone will go off with nonsense or pick up lines over and over again and johnny is laughing somewhere in the house and kenshi is sighing trying not to laugh
raiden likes making mead at home- he's also dabbled in making beer and wine but he prefers mead bc he likes how simple the recipe is and how he can switch out the fruits depending on the season
johnny just doesnt like regular cows milk, so he always has a milk substitute available for himself- at first he was all about almond and oat milk but then he realized he could just use coconut milk and coconut cream for things.... he's a changed man
they all patch each other up after missions- usually it's a quiet affair and they all just soak up being home and safe together again, but other times it can be loud and boisterous or sometimes an argument will break out if someone was injured for a stupid reason (like when johnny broke a rib taking a hit for lao, or when raiden almost got thrown off of a cliff after taking on like five assailants at once)
johnny runs super hot, kenshi runs super cold, lao's thermoregulation is honestly impressive, and raiden says he's fine but his fingers and toes get cold hella fucking fast
despite lao being the one with the chakram hat, johnny's hands are the most scarred thanks to split knuckles, clumsy moments with sharp objects, his loose use of knife safety while cooking, and how often kenshi and him used to spar at wu shi
the only bf without a single tattoo on his skin is lao- kenshi has his body murals, johnny has a few small ones that can be covered by make up, and raiden has a small smiley face on his ass cheek after losing a bet to lao
when talking about his bfs to jax, kenshi never specifies until jax asks- so kenshi will go on and on about how one of his bfs has been getting into this new show, and jax will have to use context clues to be able to tell if it's johnny, raiden, or lao-
johnny plays with the press a bit by mentioning his bfs in passing but almost as if he's talking about one dude- it's a whole thing when he breaks that he's in a polycule
kenshi doesnt like being on camera, so often photos with kenshi are cropped or taken with his head/face/tattoos out of frame- the most kenshi interacts with fans is when johnny does short lives and kenshi will talk to them there while johnny reads the comments to him
raiden and lao always crash johnny's lives- lao and johnny will chat with ppl and raiden usually sits nearby but also doesnt love being on camera- so he's given his privacy unless he tells johnny otherwise
the four are well known at the closest ER- johnny is very clumsy and living with antique swords, a chakram hat, several super sharp kitchen knives, and a lot of glass antiques as well can lead to a lot injuries- the night nurse knows the four of them fairly well and johnny is always sure to send her little gifts during the holidays and on her birthday- she's like an honorary fifth member of their lil family
unless he's cooking, going out, or working out, raiden leaves his hair down- all three of his bfs love running their hands through it
johnny does skin care nights for his bfs- he pampers himself and all of them with face masks and special treatments, they make a night of it and order in and put some music on while they chill in comfy clothes and indulge in self care
kenshi is a master at massages- his bfs are always spoiled if they complain of back pain or sore muscles-
lao will make cookie dough if he cant sleep, and several times all three of his bfs have caught him up at 4 am leant over the counter mixing chocolate chips into cookie dough before shoving the bowl in the fridge and getting dragged back upstairs
kenshi smokes sometimes when he's stressed or needs to think smth over- johnny used to smoke and sometimes joins kenshi outside just for the smell, though johnny has stolen cigarettes before when he was a little too stressed with work
raiden and lao are always dragging johnny and kenshi away from work late at night- they both overwork themselves and it's always "one more thing" until it's 2 am and then raiden and lao go and drag them off to bed
lao has music going 24/7- it's impossible to catch him without an ear bud in (he listens to all sorts of music but johnny and kenshi introduced him to rap and dad rock and that's a good portion of his music)
lao also listens to a lot of hip hop and can be caught dancing around the house to whatever is playing
that's all i got for now- it's almost 2 am for me so now i must go to bed lmao, but i love polychamps so much 🥺💖

fictober 22: "who takes care of you?"
(I know I missed Fictober completely but better late than never)
Written for @jon-withnoh just because they’re so good at writing soft Danny and Ich, and because I missed writing these two.
wc: 853
”Who takes care of you?”
It’s been rattling around in her head since the girl asked it. It disarmed her, though she knows she didn’t show it at the time.
”I take care of everything, Madam. The staff, the house, every last detail, the way I did for Mrs. de Winter before she passed.”
”That’s all well and good, Mrs. Danvers, but who takes care of you?”
She’s not sure the girl meant to ask it. Not really. Certainly she knows the girl doesn’t care about the answer. It’s a rhetorical question, after all. There is no answer. Danny takes care of herself, she always has. Ever since she came to Manderley—before, even. A woman of her station has to be self-sufficient, and she knew long before she even accepted the position that there would be no husband, not for her.
Once, she’d hoped the answer to that question might be Rebecca. But that was before Manderley, before Maxim de Winter, back when it was just the two of them and Danny was nothing more than a lady’s maid. And that hope died long before Rebecca did.
No. No one takes care of Mrs. Danvers. She won’t let anyone get close enough to take care of her anymore, and she tells herself that is how things must be. If someone is close enough for her to ever show that kind of vulnerability, then something is wrong.
It would be nice, though, a voice whispers in her ear, late at night when she’s certain she is the only one in the house still awake. Just once it would be nice, for someone to massage her shoulders at the end of the day, for someone to check if she’s eaten enough the night before a ball.
You’d let the girl take care of you, wouldn’t you? But then, you’d want her to take care of you in other ways…
She closes her eyes against the thought, and she tries to sleep.
Months pass, and against all odds, she finds herself warming up to the new Mrs. de Winter. She is nothing like Rebecca, and in a moment of weakness Danny admits to herself that that is refreshing. She has none of Rebecca’s temper, none of her impulse to lash out—certainly she’s never seen the girl angry, not even for things she should perhaps be angry about. And she’s never seen Maxim this… domestic.
It happens one morning, though looking back she cannot pinpoint the exact moment. She’s dusting in the morning room, and the girl is writing letters—she’s had far more to write, now, since the costume ball a few months back—when she hears one of the maids come in with a tray.
It’s too early for tea, she thinks automatically, and then has to stop herself. It’s too early for Rebecca to have wanted tea, but the new Mrs. de Winter likes hers while she works. What really surprises her, is that when she turns to make sure the maid has set the tea in the correct spot, that there are two places set.
“I thought Mr. de Winter was out this morning,” she says.
“He is,” Mrs. de Winter says. “The other cup is for you.”
“I’m busy, Madam.”
“You can rest for five minutes, Mrs. Danvers,” the girl says, and there’s the steel in her voice which Danny has only heard a few times before, but which seems to be there more and more each day.. The girl is finally growing a spine. “I don’t think the books will accumulate more dust if you stop for tea.”
It’s this small joke that makes Danny turn. There was a time only recently the girl wouldn’t have dared say such a thing in front of Danny, that she wouldn’t have even glanced her way. Now she is staring at her expectantly, her back straight, and she is sitting in the chair in the morning room and for the first time Danny does not think of it as Rebecca’s chair.
Rebecca, who would never have asked Danny for tea like this, because it’s not proper. Because Rebecca was aware of their stations, the line between them clearly demarcated in a way Mrs. de Winter is either too ignorant or naive to see.
Still, Danny sits. And she accepts the tea.
“What are you doing?” she asks softly, as Mrs. de Winter pours. “And don’t say pouring tea. You know that’s not what I mean.”
“I’m taking care of you,” Mrs. de Winter says simply.
“Why?”
“Because someone should,” she says. And with that she reaches forward and takes Danny’s hand, and Danny is too shocked to object. Mrs. de Winter begins gently massaging her palm, and Danny is so startled she almost pulls away.
Almost.
But she doesn’t. She lets Mrs. de Winter take care of her, because she is offering, because she is there. And because it has been far too long since anyone has taken care of her, and it might be nice—for a change.
So many things are changing around Manderley nowadays, anyway.
Why shouldn’t this?

Portrait of Vivienne Westwood by Christian Shambenait
It took me a few days, but with the death of icon-goddess-genius Vivienne Westwood, I had to make a post here about her work and how massively influential she was during her lifetime, and why her influence will remain for years to come.
"I take something from the past that has a sort of vitality that has never been exploited – like the crinoline – and get very intense. In the end you do something original because you overlay your own ideas." Vivienne Westwood
Born in 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire, Vivienne Westwood (nèe Swire) did not have a "traditional" path into fashion and design, even though she took a course of jewellery at the Harrow Art School (she thought it was not for her, being a working-class girl), she became a primary school teacher and got married with Derek Westwood, had a kid... But she was a maker of things and a creative mind, and made her own wedding dress and jewellery that she sold at a stall.
Tumblr media
Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood at the Let It Rock store (London, January 1972).
But all of that was about to change when she met Malcolm McLaren. She got divorced, moved with him and had another son. McLaren became the manager of the Sex Pistols and with Westwood, they became a creative duo who dressed the band and became VERY influential during th punk era. We must add the after that they opened a store called SEX, which was the meeting place for the punk scene in London in the 1970s. So, yeah. punk wouldn't look like it does without Vivienne Westwood.
Tumblr media
"Vivienne and Malcolm use clothes to shock, irritate and provoke a reaction but also to inspire change. Mohair jumpers, knitted on big needles, so loosely that you can see all the way through them, T-shirts slashed and written on by hand, seams and labels on the outside, showing the construction of the piece; these attitudes are reflected in the music we make. It's OK to not be perfect, to show the workings of your life and your mind in your songs and your clothes." Viv Albertine
This era of Westwood's design has a lot of collaboration, especially with McLaren, and they produced under the Worlds End label until 1985. These collections have each a theme and a name, and here is when we star seeing Vivienne Westwood's eye and curiosity for historical fashion, as well as nods and details especially from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of course, it was the 80s and all was way more colourful than what we thing of more contemporary Vivienne Westwood, but you can see that EVERYTHING was already there in the period which she dubbed as "New Romantic" with collections like Witches, Punkature, and Pirate.

The 1988-1991 era is called "The Pagan Years", and we can see the change of the main looks from punks to girls in clothes that parodied the upper class. And it is then that I think the ultimate Vivienne Westwood is seen: corsets, crinolines, tartan, colourful stripes... Here is when we begin to see the historical references taken to a extreme, mixed with the modern word and sense of humour, while always being perfectly made and patterned and fun for all genders.
Here some of my favourite ones:

fellow enjoyer of danbea identified, how about something about photographs? :)
“You rang, Madam?”
Rebecca barely looked up from her work, only motioned for her to come into the room. “I need you to sort through this deluge of letters for me.”
“Very well, Madam.” Danny approached the desk, eyeing the towering stack of envelopes. Some had been torn open, some neatly sliced with a letter opener. Only a few at the top remained sealed.
“Here, sit.” Rebecca pointed at a low stool next to her and Danny took her seat, awaiting instructions. “Sort through this pile and hand me anything I should attend to before I go to London.”
“Yes, Madam.” Danny reached out with both hands and let the mass of letters drop into her lap. She went through them one by one. A few she handed to Rebecca at once, others found a place to one side, ready to be answered once Rebecca returned from her outing. Among the newer, unopened letters was a thick envelope addressed to Rebecca and Mr de Winter both. The name and address on the back proved it to be from Mr de Winter’s sister. Danny lowered the letter opener. She stared at the envelope in her lap, smoothing it out with her fingers. It was heavy, heavier than any of the other letters. Had Mrs Lacy sent something special? A card, perhaps, or a photograph of her and her husband on their travels?
Danny glanced at Rebecca. She seemed completely absorbed in her work, having just pulled a fresh sheet of paper towards her. Danny watched her write out the date in careful strokes. Reassured, Danny took up the letter opener again and slipped it into the small gap between the flap and body of the envelope. The blade, shaped like a dagger, cut through the paper easily. Danny reached inside the envelope, carefully pulling out its contents. The letter was short, cheery and to the point as most of Mrs Lacy’s correspondence tended to be. Underneath was a picture postcard of the Scottish Highlands, and underneath that a photograph of Mrs Lacy and her husband, bundled up in cold weather gear, holding walking sticks.
With another glance at Rebecca, Danny picked up the photograph. Even in the black and white picture it was obvious how well Mrs Lacy looked. She had one hand on her husband’s shoulder and was beaming at the camera, her cheeks flushed with the cold. Danny’s mouth twitched into a small smile. Quickly, she bowed her head. She brushed Mrs Lacy’s face with her thumb. She could picture herself there, standing next to Mrs Lacy in hiking gear and boots, listening to her talk about the drive, the paths and the weather. Unlike Rebecca, she would not grow bored, even if Mrs Lacy began to repeat herself, as she was wont to do. She would stand closeby and smile, and hand out water once Mrs Lacy stopped to draw breath. Mrs Lacy would say Thank you, Miss Danvers in that resolute tone of hers, I don’t know what we’d do without you and Danny would bow her head to hide how much the words pleased her.
Later, when they returned to the rented house, Danny would stand to one side in the hall, watching Rebecca and Mrs Lacy peel out of their coats and boots. Mrs Lacy would come to her before going upstairs and put a hand on her shoulder. It would be nothing out of the ordinary, she had done it before. There now, Miss Danvers, she would say. You brought us back safe and sound, just as I knew you would. Mrs Lacy would ignore Rebecca rolling her eyes and would squeeze Danny’s shoulder before excusing herself with a nod and a smile.
“What have you got there?”
Danny jumped. “A letter from Mrs Lacy. She’s send a picture postcard and a photograph from Scotland.”
“Oh.” Rebecca pulled a face. “I suppose I’ll have to call her when I get back from London. Put it to the side for now, it’s certainly not pressing.”
“Of course, Madam. As you wish.”
We can have some Danbea pining, as a treat 💛

Phantom of the Opera Soundscape Library
This is a masterlist of PotO inspired soundscapes I've created. I struggled for weeks to find good ASMR ambience for writing until my good friend @enigmawritesstuff put me on to the myNoise.net sound generator.
Though I created these for some of the hyper-specific settings in my fic When the Longing Returns, (the stable, the dormitory, etc.), they're also good for general PotO ambience. I figure if I can't find good Lair or opera house asmr, most other writers and readers probably can't either. So please, consider this a resource, my gift to you, for the good of all Phan-kind.
Wandering Child (Church Bells (slow), Wind and tree creaks, Wind, Church Bells (faster), Footsteps in snow, Crows, Carriage, Horse and harness, Wind 2, Horse hooves)
Cemetery Walk Preset
Carriage Ride Preset
Carriage House/Opera Stable (Distant Bells, ambient tone, barn/stable, horse munching, distant crowd chatter, distant clatter 1, footsteps, distant clatter 2, blacksmith hammer, rustling hay)
Opera House (Low ambient string tone, deep ambient tone, higher string tone, fireplace crackle, distant singing, flame, crowd chatter, steps, gaslight hiss, cheery babble)
Hallway Preset
Refectory Preset
Foyer Preset (Crowded)
Foyer Preset (Empty)
Empty Stage Preset
Dressing Room Preset
Backstage (Low ambient strings, deep ambient tone, higher ambient strings, ambient horns, flame, crowd chatter, distant clatter (2 kinds), hammering, gaslight hiss)
Ballet Dormitory (Ambient tone, blowing fabric, bells, window wind, wooden creaks (2 kinds), whispering, morning birds, gaslight hiss, cheery babble)
Day Preset
Bedtime Preset
Night Preset
In the Bois (Background Paris, winter wind, Church Bells, snowy footsteps, trotting horses, birds, carriages, children playing, snow thaw, cheery babble)
Phantom's Lair (Lapping water, oar/pole in water, low ambient tone, organ music, lantern/gate squeak, torch/flame, horse & harness, footsteps, pen scratching paper, dripping water)
Tunnel Walk Preset
Boat Ride Preset
Erik Composing Preset
The Setting Sun Inn (Church bells, Chatter, Fireplace (three kinds), footsteps, coin clink, table sounds, wind whistle, light snow) Note: This is the first scape I've done exclusively for Gaston Leroux's novel. When Raoul follows Christine to Perros they lodge at the little inn there, called the Setting Sun, run by one Mme. Tricarde.
Breton Winter (Chilly coastal sounds, night birds, wind rustling heather, crashing waves, light snow) Another 'scape for Leroux, also for The Magic Violin. I've tried to capture the hillside on the edge of the moor overlooking the sea where Christine tells Raoul about her visits from "the Angel of Music"
Other Soundscapes
Chateau Destler (For Guardian Angel by @madamedestler)
Chateau de Chagny (For The Phantom's Atonement by MadameDestler, Chapter's 1 and 3)
Christine's Room Preset
Engagement Party Preset
Madame Bassett's (For The Phantom's Atonement by MadameDestler, Chapters 2, 14, and 15 )
Lounge Preset
Claire's Room Preset
Lyon Cottage (For The Phantom's Atonement by @madamedestler)
Cozy Evening Preset (With Rain)
Cozy Evening Preset (No Rain)
Spring Afternoon Preset
Church Saint-Jacques (For Corpus Christi by @madamedestler. A little combination of Church echo, wooden creaks, fabric rustle, and most important for any sinful assignation--rain and thunder. This is such a vivid setting for a fic, and I really wanted an excuse to do a Cathedral scape. The Church Saint-Jacques is one of the two actual churches in Perros-Guirec. The one that features in Leroux's book may be the other: the Chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Clarte)
Christine's Sleeping Cell Preset
Night Confession Preset
Sounds of St. Florent (For Sacred by TryingNotToLoveYou. This is such a breath of fresh air. Very specific to the fic because of the Corsica setting, but really good fun because of all the sounds one doesn't often get to use for a PotO scape.)
Boat Ride Preset
Dining Hall Preset
Rain Dance Preset
In Church Preset
For Salvation by TryingNotToLoveYou
Walk from Vornay (For Chapters 1 and 3)
Tavern Preset
Windy Walk Preset

Chateaux by Night Preset
Chateaux by Day Preset
Dinner Preset
By the Stream Preset
Horse Ride Preset

Damn we really our angst, don't we?
(@jon-withnoh guess who finally wrote for the Rebecca fandom again??)
The Worst Possible Time
A kiss. The worst possible timing. In more ways than one.
Tumblr media
Tears pricked her eyes. She should have known that Maxim would never love her as much as Rebecca. Always Rebecca.
The costume ball had been a terrible idea. She thought she would be lovely dressed as Maxim's great aunt. But he had been furious and even after she changed, he barely looked at her the entire night.
It finally became too much. She imagined every guest whispering about her, comparing her to darling Rebecca.
Even in her sadness, she could not escape Maxim's first wife. She was in Rebecca's old room, drawn by her ghost. The sound of the sea beckoned to her now; perhaps it was Rebecca's ghost continuing to call for her.
"Madam?"
She whirled around to find Mrs. Danvers standing closer than expected. Dreaded Mrs. Danvers who made the costume suggestion, who brought her down every available chance.
"You did this on purpose!" she cried, tears streaming down her cheeks now. "You knew the entire time; this was because of you!"
"I thought you would look like her," Mrs. Danvers said quietly, almost too quietly to hear.
"Why do you hate me so?"
Mrs. Danvers was taken aback. Hate? That was certainly a strong word. "I don't hate you."
"You do. You must to put me through such torture! And now Maxim despises me and for what? For a cruel trick?"
"I needed to see her again!" Mrs. Danvers snapped. Her hands were clenched into fists by her side. "I needed... I thought you would look like her."
"Like Rebecca?" She scoffed, her sadness evolving into anger. "Of course, always Rebecca. Never me! Never my name! Just the second Mrs. De Winter." Rebecca was dead. Yet she was the one who felt like a ghost.
She expected harsh words from Mrs. Danvers. She expected to be mocked, to be told of course it was always about Rebecca and how could she think it would ever be about anyone else?
What she didn't expect was Mrs. Danvers pressing her lips against hers in a soft kiss. It wasn't probing or demanding. Just soft and even a little sad.
She stepped back away from the housekeeper, heart fluttering and feeling confused more than anything. "Danny..."
Danny stepped forward, and this time there was no resistance when they kissed again, Danny bringing her arms around the younger woman to hold her close. There wasn't love, but there was a softness that neither woman had known for a very long time.
But it couldn't last. Danny found her arms empty all of a sudden.
"...Madam?"
"I am not Rebecca."
Mrs. Danver's gaze dropped to the ground as she internally cursed herself. Stupid, stupid woman. "No, you're not."
A loud booming came from the ocean. Both women went to the large window in time to see the remnants of a flare gun's signal raining down from the sky. A ship was in trouble.
