I've now finished DA:I and have a completed World State in the Keep for DA4. I will say that, out of the three games (Origins, 2, and Inquisition) I think that the Inquisition party feels the closest to me. Like they're the ones I feel would actually want to stay together after all was said and done, helped I think by the fact that so many say that's what they want (with Sera almost starting to cry if you have the Inquisitor tell her that Skyhold will always be her home if she needs it). With Origins, it really felt like everyone was there and working together purely because of the mission to stop the blight and no other reason. With 2, it felt like they were there and working together because they lived in Kirkwall and wanted to make their lives easier. But with Inquisition, everyone who was there chose to be there, and sure it was for a cause . . . but also we got bonding scenes like them playing Wicked Grace together, or eating cookies up on rooftops. Even when they fought with each other, I felt a real closeness there. Like it was them against the world (which it kind of ends up being during the Exalted Council).

Of course, this is just all my opinion, and it's possible that this had something to do with how the personalities of each character developed over my playthroughs, as well as the fact that I found it a bit hard to track people down in Kirkwall sometimes and as such didn't bond with my companions as much as I would have wanted. (RIP Fenris, I missed the opportunity to do your character quest and so you died 😔). But at the end of DA:I Trespasser, I had the Inquisition stay together not just because that's what my Trevelyan wanted (as making the world a better place / helping people is very important to her), but also because I didn't want to see the squad break up, even though they had to break up a little due to responsibilities elsewhere in the world anyway. It's just how they made me feel.

#for those wondering - you know the Blue - Purple - Red metric in DA2? that's kind of how my characters were #with my Warden being Red - Hawke Purple - and Inquisitor Blue #Lyra Mahariel did NOT want to be a Warden and did NOT want to fight the blight and did NOT want to be there #she also never wanted to be Warden-Commander either. she bounced as soon as she could to find an end to the calling #bc she also doesn't want to die from smth she had no choice in #her opinion was ''fuck this fuck you fuck everything'' and she was not afraid to kill at all #meanwhile Briar Hawke was snarky and 100% the type to bant in the face of death. she did what she had to for her family & friends #she didn't do what she did bc of some sense of justice or obligation; she did it bc she fucking lived there (there being Kirkwall) #and she really just wanted things to settle down so she could have some drinks and play Wicked Grace w/ her friends #unfortunately things didn't always work out that way but hey. at least she could quip while dealing with the issues #and lastly Lucia Trevelyan lived a sheltered and also mostly easy life as the youngest noble in her family #whom no one really expected anything of and she also expected nothing from herself #so it was hard to believe at first that she was Chosen - but she and her family are faithful so she did #and even when the truth came out she kept it up bc she wanted to believe that there was *some* reason for this and even if there wasn't #her sheltered life led her to be sickened by needless violence and killing and she wanted to make the world a better place #she was gentle when the world let her be. kind when the world let her be. #even now she just wants to help. she got a long great w/ Cole tbh

hawke doesn’t? much mind the chantry? she’s not really a fan, but she believes the maker and andraste, even if she’s not one for prayer. even though she’s not a mage, a good bit of her life was spent worrying over her family being torn apart by it, so she was never really at ease with chantry as an institution; bethany mentions knowing all the templars in lothering, but honestly, with how much it seems their parents rely on hawke to look after the twins, I doubt helena wouldn’t also have them memorized and just be constantly aware in order to protect her sister. what I’m trying to say but am not succeeding is that even though she is not a mage herself, she’s been constantly worrying over the circle forcing her family apart and with protecting her sister that there’s just too much tension in regards to the chantry for her to be comfortable with structured religion, although she does believe the maker and andraste.

lyranna and velanna both believe (or believed, depending on verse) in the elven gods. lyranna was particularly devout to andruil, because the huntress was always the one she felt more drawn to, and that was only reaffirmed to her when she grew up to be a hunter too. her vallaslin is andruil’s; and she doesn’t have the knowledge of what the evanuris truly were, or any idea that the dalish got wrong, or that the tattoos were originally slave marks. in spite of that, if she did know about the vallaslin, her stance on it would be that it no longer matters what they originally were. her people have reclaimed them and assigned new meanings to them; and even if their gods were not what they thought they were, the values previously assigned to them can still be retained in their markings.

velanna is a different matter. she values actual history as much as she values stories, and I think learning the truth of it would hit her a lot harder (perhaps not even due to faith in itself, but because it means so much to her that her people be able to know their past and this just shows how much was lost or they got wrong). I don’t think she ever had a single god/goddess she felt particularly tied to; maybe because she grew up being trained to be next keeper and thus sought to know what there was to know about all of them. but not feeling particularly tied to one doesn’t necessarily means she didn’t felt particular kinship to any of them; and it would be fen’harel to her. in the dalish tales, he is regarded as an outcast, one of the creators but one very negatively regarded, branded a trickster and a betrayer who walked among both groups of gods (the creators and the forgotten ones) but didn’t truly belong with either. and odd as that may seem to the dalish, given they seem to regard him with a respect that comes from fear, young velanna, who was part of her clan without truly having a sense of belonging, likely would have felt closer to him than to the more popular members of the pantheon. 

but also it’s fun to note that lyra is a lot less amenable towards andrastianism than velanna. with all the elves suffered allegedly because of her, lyranna doesn’t really see andraste in a positive light. if someone’s beliefs are with her and the maker, good for them, she won’t complain or demean or act antagonistic towards them --- but if you try to preach to her about it she won’t take kindly to it (cassandra’s remark to lavellan in inquisition, asking if “there’s no room for one more god” when you tell her you follow the elven gods? lyranna would fight after hearing something like that ngl)

velanna, as demonstrated in the game itself, is really chill towards andraste. she thinks andraste was probably cool, it’s her followers who suck. vel doesn’t like the chantry, but it’s more because the way she sees it, it started with good intentions on andraste’s part but power corrupts and now here we are. 

morrigan doesn’t believe the maker, and if andraste existed she definitely doesn’t think she was holy. that said, ancient magister that supposedly originated the blights returning as an actual concrete enemy does put some things in perspective. still, she stands by “there is a logical explanation somewhere in that they probably tried to enter the fade physically, fucked up and fucked us all no god involved”. on the other side, with the elven gods I don’t think she would have doubted they existed, much like urthemiel’s soul still existed within the archdemon; so she does not believe in anything in a faith sort of way, but if it has ties to the arcane and ancient magic, she believes in their existence as ancient and powerful beings, if not gods. whatever doubts she had on that account ended with flemeth anyway, so even if it was a more abstract idea they once existed, now she knows some of them at least are still around.

Does her damn best to be a good Commander and regularly causes incidents in court fighting for elven rights

Being pretty unkillable in her own right and her friendship with Zevran are probably the only reasons she hasn’t been assassinated yet.

Anya Surana

Love interest: Morrigan

Her time in the circle was spent keeping her head down, trying to remain unnoticed and therefore unharmed, which she mostly succeeded in

As a result she was unable to draw on anything but wisps without strong enough virtues to call them until she sacrificed her life to give Jowan a chance at escape, and a Love spirit formed from everything she felt.

Was assigned Anders as a mentor in the circle in the hopes that her nature would be a positive influence on him/lead to less escape attempts. (It very much Did Not Work.)

Deeply interested in elven lore and her heritage there, happily teaches anyone who wants to know about the magic and culture she learnt from the ancient phylactery

Becomes Lyra’s Warden Constable until she resigns to be with Morrigan and her son (Although she still visits frequently)

Laylan Mahariel

Ranger, Duelist, Bard,

Love interest: Amell and Zevran

Actually also a mage but their magic is minor and mostly used in minor subtle ways to be a better fighter and more effective hunter

Falon’din vallaslin both as a reminder of their duty to bring death as a hunter and a protector of the clan and in remembrance of their parents and everyone else who had already joined Falon’din’s side

Fiercely proud of their heritage and not afraid to cut a bitch.

Stays with the wardens but will occasionally go on detours to help Zevran with crow business

Interested in all things prohibited by the circle. The moment he heard wardens don’t forbid blood magic he snatched the blood magic tome that he’d been eyeing for years.

Wasn’t even helping Jowan and Anya when he got recruited he just got caught in the crossfire and figured in for a penny in for a pound

Thing with both Laylan and Zevran start casual and then oh no caught feelings whoops.

Elentiya Cousland (I’m the most hesitant about her design so we will sure see if any of this stays)

She has a good heart but she’s a noble and it Shows.

Was very bubbly and outgoing until Howe slaughtered her family, so spends most of the blight focused on vengeance, and becomes a lot more reserved in her grief

Wants what’s best for her country and always has, can be incredibly ruthless about what that means when it isn’t personal

Listen the conversation on who should rule was a long one with this group ultimately having them agree it should be Alistair as quite a few of them, Lyra the most vocal of them were not content with the status quo for which Anora was at least partially responsible.

And then in an incredibly impulsive move that wasn’t a conversation at all Elentiya announced she’d be marrying Alistair in front of the landsmeet.

Probably one of the least developed characters but we’ll get there

Endlessly in love with the world on the surface, yo butterflies slap what the hell

 Not quite proud of being Casteless but refuses to take any shit for it and cares deeply for her fellows

The rest of the wardens pretty much came to the conclusion they should keep the Anvil because the use outweighed the risk when they’re facing the end of the world almost entirely alone. But Camila refused to budge knowing the casteless would be the first on the anvil condemned to eternal servitude

First thought watching Camila’s reveal was ‘what a desecration of the provings’, her second thought was ‘hot’

Your choice of OC! (Or feel free to answer for multiple OCs!) How does your OC feel about being a person that everyone goes to for help with their problems? Are they used to having this level of responsibility, or is it entirely new to them? Are they ever tempted to just tell people to fuck off?

Oh man!

I think I’m going to go with Lyra on this one because I rarely ever get the chance to just talk about my Warden and she has the most interesting feelings when it comes to Responsibility:

You see, Lyra doesn’t like being the person everyone goes to for help--the shift from being a troublemaking prankster to ‘The Warden,’ was so jarring for her, she just wants things to back to normal. 

Lyra doesn’t like putting effort into things--she only learned to use her bow because it was fun--and she only became a hunter because she believed they could do whatever they wanted while Keeper Marethari (and in her case Ashalle, her guardian) weren’t watching.

But now everything is on her shoulders--she’s the one planning and making hard choices and its nerve racking.

She wants to tell everyone to fuck-off and to stop relying on her because she isn’t well suited for this life and it’s this is more terrifying than any Darkspawn or Great Bear she’s ever faced--but she doesn’t (at least no usually.)

This is her life now--she’s a Grey Warden and even though she never wanted it, she has to try. 

She doesn’t want the Darkspawn to win--they already took her best friend, they took her ‘normal,’ life and she don't want to loose more to them.

Lyra was the best hunter in her clan and occasionally acted as the leader of her hunting party--but her natural aversion to responsibility kept the Clan Elders from considering her for the role of the Head Huntsman.

She’d much rather show off a new trick shot than make sure everyone’s equipment was ready.  

She had all of the talent but none of the drive--she was a troublemaker and they didn’t understand why. 

But the truth is Lyra is afraid of taking responsibility.  

She’s afraid of having anyone else life in her hands.

Her Father was the Keeper and he died to protect the Clan because protecting them was his responsibility.

His death left her mother so grief-stricken she left--and that was a fate she wanted desperately to avoid.

She doesn’t resent them for it, but she doesn’t want that to be her life.

She didn’t want to die or leave anyone broken because it was her ‘responsbility.’
