The Heart Knows
Flufftober Day 18 - Soulmate AU (Read on AO3)
Luke thought he wouldn’t have to deal with the stress of a soulmate the way that the Downworlders do - Shadowhunters have chosen soulmates, they have their Parabatai, and that’s it. They aren’t born with soulmate marks like the Downworlders and mundanes, to have to hope that one day they’ll cross paths with the person they’re meant to be with.
The day Luke turned into a werewolf was also the day he lost his runes and gained a soulmate mark.
He told himself that he wouldn’t get wrapped up in it, especially after his chosen soulmate as a Nephilim didn’t turn out so great. His track record for soulmates leaves a lot to be desired and he’s probably better off if he never crosses paths with the person who shares the marking on his chest that looks like the silhouette of a book.
Luke tries not to care but he finds himself looking at the exposed skin of every person he dates, every stranger in a bookshop, hoping to find ‘the one’. It’s foolish, he knows, but he can’t stop hoping…
Until the day he stopped hoping because he finds Maryse.
He doesn’t need a mark to know that this is it for him. He thought it might be Jocelyn, it’s the closest he’s come to being okay without ever knowing who his ‘one’ is. Once he reconnects with Maryse Lightwood, however, he decides once and for all that he doesn’t care about a stupid mark on his skin. She’s it for him. She’s all he wants.
“You deserve to find your soulmate, Lucian,” Maryse tells him one day.
“I deserve to be happy, and you make me happy, Mare. That’s all I need,” Luke promises her.
On the day of Maryse’s de-runing, Luke wants to be there, but Maryse won’t allow it. He waits, giving her the space and time she wants, and is surprised when she shows up on his doorstep before he even gets the chance to check in on her.
“Maryse, how are you feeling? Is everything alright?” Luke asks, ushering her inside without hesitation.
“I… Lucian, I-” Maryse starts, then stops, stumbling over her words. Instead of finding the right words, she pulls the shoulder of her top down to expose the space just under her neck. At first, Luke doesn’t know what he’s looking at - the dark black marking just looks like a rune at a glance, until he remembers that she doesn’t have runes anymore.
That’s when he realizes - it looks like the silhouette of a book. It’s his matching soulmate mark.
It’s nice to see the mark, to know for sure that Maryse is meant to be it for him, but he meant it when he said he felt it before now, too.
Sometimes the heart just knows.
“Guess I don’t have to worry about you finding your soulmate and leaving me,” Maryse says softly with a nervous laugh.
“I was never going to do that,” Luke says. “I love you just as much knowing this-” he runs a finger gently over the mark, smiling. “As I did an hour ago, or yesterday, or last week.”
Maryse smiles up at him fully now, nerves gone. “I love you too.”

-------------------------
The institute shone in holiday lights. It took everyone hours to decorate the inside of the institute. You could still hear Jace grumbling in your ear about how pointless the entire thing was. But you all had persevered. The institute looked so glorious. Many pictures were taken because everyone was very proud of the results.
Magnus summoned most of the decorations, others were made by everyone in attendance (even Jace though he wasn’t given a choice), and some even came from respective childhoods.
The halls were filled with the sound of holiday music as you all decorated. With the occasional argument over decorations, (and the mishap where Max accidentally set multiple trees on fire), you were all putting in work. The institute truly looked like a Christmas card.
Jace, being the angsty adult teenager he is, kept pestering you about when dinner was going to get there.
....................
Last night was Christmas Eve and though the majority were neither religious or didn’t celebrate Christmas, it was agreed to get together to celebrate the holidays that night.
The institute smelled delightful with multiple pastries and appetizers adoring the tables.
First, you waited for everyone to show up. You and Jace got there early as the Lightwood siblings had agreed to help their mother with preparing the food. You decided to come along with Jace because you thought there was no point waiting three more hours waiting at home when you could show up early and help your mother-in-law. Jace hadn’t been looking forward to helping Mayrse cook and clean, any more than he was excited to see what food Isabelle decided to bring.
When you portalled into the institute you immediately heard chatter in the kitchen.
After setting down your bags of presents by the tree, you followed the noise and sure enough, Isabelle, Alec, Simon, and Maryse were already there. Mayse was standing very intimidatingly in the center of the kitchen giving everyone orders with a wave of the knife she was holding.
“Ah, the perfect picture of Shadowhunter holidays.” Jace said announcing your presence
Mayrses head had snapped towards the two of you and she smiled immediately embracing her adopted son, and you as well (to your surprise).
“Good, you’re here. Jace, go help Alec with the stuffing. Dear, if you could help Simon and Isabelle with the mashed potatoes that would be lovely.”
Simon looked like he was meant for a baking show, with a holiday apron and white chefs hat. He seemed very concerned as he watched his fiance pour things into the bowl. When you came over he smiled, happy to not have to be the one to tell Isabelle that she wasn’t following the recipe correctly and therefore getting snapped at.
And so the next few hours passed with a lot of orders from Maryse and annoyed debate from Isabelle after she considered putting brownie batter in the mashed potatoes.
........
Then, Luke and Jocelyn showed up holding ceramic bowls filled with food.
Clary came only a few moments later her red hair disheveled and covered with snow, a bag clearly filled with presents hung at her side.
Last, but certainly not least, coming fashionably late, was Magnus and a well dressed Max.
Unfortunately Robert Lightwood had some things in Alicante that he couldn’t be excused for. So he was unable to join.
They invited Aline and her family but they were spending Christmas with Aline’s girlfriend, Helen, and the rest of the Blackthorn family.
Greetings went by swiftly and then everyone sat down and ate dinner.
Afterwards multiple card and board games were gone through. Jace and Alec had gotten up sometime in the middle wanting to ‘fetch something’ but you translated that to ‘I want to go play swords with my parabatai’. They were only gone for a few moments before Mayrse had dragged them back saying they were going to ruin their nice clothes.
You have to say your favorite part was when Mayrse began retelling past holiday stories about Jace, Alec, Isabelle, and their late brother Max.
.....................
Finally the presents were passed around.
Max got an overwhelming amount of presents by Alec’s standards.
“You guys really didn’t have to get him so many presents. I mean, you should see the amount that is lying under our own tree back home!” Alec stressed.
But Max was happy so he didn’t press much more.
You gave Jace a ceramic duck, he glared at you and shook his head disapprovingly as everyone else laughed in amusement.
“Just be glad I didn’t get a live duck like Magnus suggested.” You whispered
Jace looked a little horrified at the thought and shivered.
.........................
After presents were done, the mindless chatter began.
People would take turns playing with Max, and then Max would be passed around on people's laps once he started to get tired, eventually landing in Alec’s lap while Magnus played with his son's hair affectionately.
You couldn’t remember when you first started getting lulled into sleep. Maybe it was when Magnus sat at the piano, playing multiple tunes that he had heard throughout his life. Probably not when Clary and Simon recited a holiday song they learned in elementary school. If you couldn’t guess they weren’t the best of singers. Perhaps it was when Jace started combing his fingers through your hair, as you laid your head against his chest. The warmth of his body and the rythmic sound of his heartbeat probably helped as well. Yeah, that was probably it.
...........
The light pours into your room. Not unpleasant but enough to wake you from your peaceful slumber.
You quickly realize that you’re back in the Herondale house. The new familiarity of the room you and Jace (mostly you, since Jace kept insisting he didn’t care how you decorated) decorated. The single bookshelf that isn’t a far distance from your bed holds both of your favorite reads as well as photographs from your wedding, honeymoon, missions, and other memorable moments with your family and friends.
Your eyes first go to a picture with Jace, who wore a wide grin with his nephew, Max on his shoulders wearing one quite similar. You took that photo while at a fair (something Jace had considered ‘childish’ but had a lot of fun at). It was at the end of the night. Max obviously exhausted, but overall ecstatic, it had been his first time at the fair. Jace looked sweaty and worn out but you could tell that he wasn’t tired. He was a shadowhunter after all.
On a shelf down is a picture of you and Jace, simply talking. It was after a rougher mission and you were both bloodied and bruised but the look of pure love the two of you shared had drawn you to frame it.
Looking towards the left, on your windowsill was a picture from your wedding. You in your gold dress, and Jace in his button up black shirt with his black leather jacket. You and Jace were sitting down, tired from socializing and dancing. Your head was on his shoulder and he was peering down at you, a big smile on his face, one that reflected on your own.
You laugh a little bit thinking back to a time where you thought you and Jace would’ve never been. How happy you are that you were wrong.
“What are you laughing at so early in the morning?” A familiar voice rasps, still laced in sleep
You shake your head moving your body so you could face him. “Nothing.” you smile brightly looking at him.
Jace Herondale, your husband, who is more angel than the majority of Shadow Hunters, has killed more demons than anyone his age, and a damn good shadow hunter, is laying in bed next to you, his eyes lined with a reminisce of sleep.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer.” The blonde voices with a tired smirk
You huff out a laugh and comb your fingers lazily through his blonde locks.
Jace makes a grumble of appreciation and his mouth softens to a genuine pleased smile. His head subconsciously leans into your head.
You smile and go down for a kiss, one he returns with great pleasure.
Kissing Jace Herondale is how you would imagine a goodbye-this is the last time I might ever see you again-kiss. Its hard, full of passion, and yearning.
His hand is on the back of your head with a firm-but not too firm-grip keeping you close.
You are the one to pull away first causing a noise of disapproval from your husband.
“Merry Christmas.” You barely manage to say before Jaces lips were back on yours.
With a bit of a struggle you pull back and smiled, “We need to get ready.”
Jace scoffs disapprovingly, “What for?”
“We’re supposed to be meeting up with your family again later.” You answer
“Later. We saw plenty of them last night. I’m sure they won’t mind me spending today with my wife.” He says before pulling you in for another kiss
“You spend every day with me.” You murmur trying to hold onto the thought of Alec, Magnus, and Max who were expecting you later on.
“And everyday I only want you more.” He whispers, his hands roaming your body in pleasure, pulling you closer to him as if you were pulling away.
But you weren’t, you're not sure you could when you wanted him just as much.
You pull back and hold his face in your hands, his lips still only a few inches from yours.
He pouts and glares at you.
You laugh in response.
“We can’t miss breakfast. Magnus will hold it over our heads for the rest of our lives.”
“I don’t give a flying fu-” Jace began only for you to cover his mouth
“Jace!” You laugh a little. Just a little.
The famous Herondale smirk was ever so present when you remove your hand. “Fine. We can do breakfast, lunch, and dinner or whatever but after that you’re mine for the night.”
Your heart skips a beat, “Sounds wonderful.”
He smiles bringing you in this time for a warm embrace.
“I love you.” You murmur into his shoulder
“I love you more.” He murmurs back, a stupid grin on his face.

Chapter 9
"Where. Are. They," Joe demanded, pacing back and forth in Gerald's office. His black eyes had gone even darker if that was at all possible.
"I'm sure Finn is hurrying her over here as we speak," AJ said softly, leaning nervously against a medical cabinet. "You only got off the phone with Karl a couple of minutes ago."
"I don't care," Joe shot back. "He's not bringing her fast enough," he grumbled under his breath as he paced once more.
"Just try to stay calm," Gerald said, readying an oxygen tank for when Miracle arrived. "You'll only upset her more."
"Stay calm," Joe scoffed. "My little girl was attacked!"
"She'll be okay," Luke said softly, placing his hand on Joe's shoulder.
"Yeah, she's a tough girl," Karl agreed.
At that moment, they heard a commotion in the hallway and turned to see Finn carrying a limp Miracle toward them.
"Let me t'rough!"
There was an urgency in Finn's voice that Joe nor AJ had ever heard before. Everyone else seemed to notice it too because they began parting like the Red Sea.
Instantly, Finn was in the office and laying Miracle down on the cot. He took her hand gently, not wanting to be separated from her, but immediately released it at her pained moan. Everyone in the room stared at her hand then, and took note of the broken pinky finger.
"God," Joe cried, moving closer to his daughter. "What did he do to her?"
"Can't...breathe…." Miracle cried softly in her unconscious state. "Please, help me…"
"How do we know for sure it was a he that attacked her," Gerald asked, placing an oxygen mask over Miracle's nose and mouth and adjusting the straps around her ears. "Hasn't Maryse got some beef with her?"
Finn spoke up then. "Her clothes are ripped open, lad. It was most likely a man."
"WHAT?" Joe demanded. He peeked underneath Finn's hoodie and took note of Miracle's torn clothing, then growled. "He's dead when I find him."
"Yes, he is," FInn agreed.
Joe glared at him. "This wouldn't even have happened if you hadn't-"
"Joe," AJ cut in. "This wasn't Finn's fault-"
"Yes, it was," Finn interrupted AJ. "If I hadn't hurt her then someone wouldn't have found the opportunity to attack her, because she would have been with me."
"Everyone needs to shut up so I can check her over," Gerald said, taking control of the situation. "That glass needs to stay in her arm for now. If it's nicked an artery and I pull it out, she could bleed out. Now, none of her injuries appear to be life-threatening at the moment, so I'm going to focus on her heart till the EMTs get here and can take over."
He gathered her heart meds should she wake up enough to take them.
Joe had had all he could stand. "Miracle, wake up. Please."
The woman remained unconscious save for a twitch of fear here and there. Suddenly her whole body lurched on the cot and she began struggling with an unseen force.
"Baby! Baby, calm down!" Joe took hold of her arms, careful to avoid her broken finger, and held her still.
A frightened wail passed her lips as she continued to struggle.
"Honey, it's us," AJ said softly, stepping up to her bedside now. "It's your Daddy and Uncle AJ. You're safe now."
A sob jolted her slight frame as her eyes finally opened and landed on Joe and AJ. Recognition dawned at last. "Oh, God, Daddy…" She cried and lunged forward, latching onto her father. Joe secured his arms around her and held her close. "He's coming back for me," she cried weakly, into Joe's shoulder. "He said he'd be back." She trembled in her father's embrace and sobbed again.
"Over my dead body," Joe pulled back only enough to look into his daughter's eyes. "He'll never touch you again as long as I'm here to stop it."
"I'm scared, Daddy," Miracle cried, obviously struggling to stay awake. She fought to keep her hold on Joe. "So scared."
Before he could respond, a couple of EMTs entered the office with a gurney and began preparing Miracle for a trip to the hospital. They lifted her onto the gurney and began taking her blood pressure and oxygen readings.
"Her blood pressure is elevated at 160 over 115. Her O2 levels are at 76 percent."
"Please, help her," Joe practically begged.
"We will sir. Just let us work on her."
An IV was started and various meds were administered, along with more oxygen, and soon she was being wheeled on the gurney to the ambulance in the parking area. Joe was following close behind. She lost consciousness again due to the meds she'd been given to calm her down. So the EMTs got a move on and hurriedly pushed her to the ambulance, and began loading her. Joe climbed in beside her and got his cell phone out to call Ella.
"What hospital are you taking her to," AJ called out, digging his rental keys out of his pocket.
"Mercy Hospital of Buffalo," one of the EMT's shouted back.
"Can I ride to the hospital with you, AJ," Finn turned to his friend and asked.
"You know Joe isn't gonna want to see you there, right?" AJ said.
"I don't care," Finn replied, his blue eyes flashing. "It's my fault she's hurt. I'm going to be there with her."
With a roll of his eyes, AJ motioned for Finn to follow him to his rental.
}i{}i{}i{}i{}i{
Miracle slowly awoke in an uncomfortable hospital bed and was startled initially to feel two hands holding hers. As her eyes opened, she saw her mother sitting next to her bed grasping her uninjured hand, while Joe sat on her other side gently holding her injured one.
"Mama," Miracle whispered. "Oh, Mama…"
"Shh shh, baby girl," Ella Seanoa said softly, reaching over and brushing some long hair from Miracle's face. Her fingers lightly brushed over the bandage on her forehead and Miracle felt a twinge of soreness.
Ella's eyes were red from crying. "You're safe now sweetheart. Nothing is going to hurt you."
"He'll come for me, Mama. I'm so scared." She shook uncontrollably, her entire body shuddering.
"He's not going to touch you," Ella said, determination in her voice. "Ever."
"She's right," Joe added. "As long as you're with us, you'll be safe."
"But I can't be with you 24/7," MIracle replied softly. "I have a job-a life-Daddy. I'm not going to be babysat for the rest of my life."
"Shhh, we'll discuss it more later," Ella said, squeezing her hand. She reached up and pushed the nurse's call button to get a nurse's assistance.
"How can I help you?" Came a female voice through the room's speaker.
"Miracle is awake," Ella announced. "Could you send a doctor?"
"Consider him on his way," the nurse replied.
"Do you have any idea who did this," Joe asked Miracle. "How much do you remember?"
Miracle hesitated, not wanting to worry her parents with the fact that she apparently knew her attacker. "I just remember being in a hallway and then someone got me from behind. Smacked my head into the wall. And then I was carried into a closet…" She trailed off, not wanting to discuss any more.
"Joe, she's going to have to tell the police. Don't make her hash it out more than once," Ella reasoned.
Joe nodded, "I get it."
"Who found me," MIracle asked, grateful to whoever had saved her life.
Before Joe could answer, however, the doctor knocked and entered the room with two uniformed police officers. "Hello Miracle. How are you feeling," he asked kindly, approaching her bed.
"Sore. Frightened," MIracle replied cautiously.
"I'm sorry for what you went through," the doctor said sympathetically. "It was horrible." He paused for a moment. "Is it okay if these officers ask you a few questions after I examine you?"
She nodded, albeit begrudgingly. "Yes, it's fine."
The doctor began his examination of her to see if she had a concussion or any other dangerous injuries. Upon his studying of her, he did detect signs of a mild concussion. Thankfully everything else was minor save for her broken pinky finger which was now taped to her ring finger.
Once the doctor was done checking her over, he left for the time being and let the officers take over.
"Are you okay with us letting in a Finn Bálor and Karl Anderson during the interview? We understand that they are the two men who found you."
"Finn was one of the ones who found me?" Miracle was flabbergasted. She had no idea that Finn had searched for her-let alone found her.
The officers nodded, and motioned to the door. "Do you mind them joining us?"
"No, I don't mind," she said. Mostly because she felt she wasn't really being given a choice.
At her answer, one of the officers reached over to the door and opened it, motioning for someone to join them. In the next instant, Finn and Karl were in the room. Miracle immediately noticed a suspicious bit of shading over Finn's eye.
A black eye. Daddy?
"Now, can you tell us what happened," the remaining cop asked Miracle.
"I was walking down a hallway and was attacked from behind. They threw me into the wall and I hit my head."
"They? More than one perpetrator?"
"No, I'm sorry, it was one. A man."
"What happened then?"
Miracle looked down. "I can't remember much. I just remember hearing a cell phone go off and he told me he'd be back for me."
"You have no idea who it was, correct?"
"Correct."
"Okay, Mr. Bálor, Mr. Anderson…" The officers turned their attention to the two wrestlers. "How did you find Ms. Seanoa?"
"Sheer luck," Finn replied. "I found her ring lying on the hallway floor. Karl and I began checking all the rooms and closets. We came to a locked or jammed door and I kicked it open after hearing Miracle's voice. She was inside."
"You saw no one suspicious leaving the area?"
"No, I did not. I then checked her for injuries, and carried her to the trainer's office where she was treated till the ambulance came."
The cops turned back to Miracle then. "DId you notice anything about the perpetrator that would give him away? His voice or any distinctive features?"
Miracle shook her head, "No, he sort of disguised his voice. It was really raspy. And as I said, it was so dark I couldn't see anything."
"What did he say to you?"
Miracle looked down at her clasped hands. She didn't want to rehash what the man had said to her about Finn not being the one for her, but that he-the attacker-was the one for her. She shuddered suddenly. She also didn't want to talk about how the guy had said they'd make love "soon".
"What is it, baby," Joe interrupted her thoughts. "You can tell us."
"Nothing," Miracle said, with a slight shrug. Then winced as a pain shot through her bicep. The glass cut, she thought. It felt tight, as if it was stitched. Which it probably was. She had no idea how long she'd been out cold. "I can't remember anything of importance." She looked down again, avoiding their eyes.
Finn stared at her as if attempting to read her thoughts.
"Okay, well we have your information if we need to ask more questions," one of the officers told her. "We'll be in touch."
"Thank you," Miracle said with a nod to both of the cops.
And with that, the officers left and Miracle was left with her parents, Finn and Karl.
"Well, I'll be going now," Karl said immediately, looking uncomfortable. "You all obviously have some talking to do."
"Thank you Karl. For helping to find me," Miracle said softly. "I don't know how I can ever repay you."
"Don't worry about it, Doll," Karl answered with a slight smile. "We're all just happy you're safe now." Then he turned and left the room.
"I'd like to talk to Miracle," Finn said as soon as the room's door clicked shut.
"You have a lot of nerve," Joe said, curling his fingers into fists. "What if she doesn't want to see you?"
"I'd still like to talk to her, if she'll let me," Finn replied, his eyes growing sad.
Miracle stared at him a moment. Why can I not say no to him, she wondered to herself. Even after the way he hurt me, I can't deny him. "It's okay, Daddy. I'll listen to him."
"I don't want him anywhere around you," Joe started.
"Daddy," Miracle said tiredly, "If he wasn't anywhere around me I might still be locked in that closet. And that man might have come back for me by now." She paused for a moment to take a deep breath. "I am not a little girl anymore and you're going to have to face that fact."
"Come on, Joe." Ella had to gently nudge him before he'd move and leave the room. Within a few seconds, Miracle was alone with Finn.
He slowly moved to the side of her bed and sat down in the chair Ella had vacated. "There's something you're not tellin' us, lass."
"What are you talking about?" Miracle looked at him quizzically.
"You're forgetting that I was a cop once," Finn replied. "A good one. I know how to read the body and how to look for signs of lies. Your pants should be on fire by now."
"How dare you," Miracle exclaimed.
"Why are you protectin' him," Finn went on as if she'd not spoken.
"I'm not," she insisted. "I just didn't want to go into detail of some of the things he said to me. It was hard enough to hear it but to have to repeat it…" She shuddered again. "Besides it was nothing that would help find him."
Finn stared at her.
"How did you get the black eye," Miracle asked, changing the subject. "Daddy?"
Finn's lips quirked up a bit at the corners. "Your mum has quite the right hook on 'er."
"Surprisingly, I'm not surprised." Her lips curved up in a sad ghost of a smile.
To Finn's surprise, tears burned his eyes then.
"Miracle... I... I'm so sorry, love. I'd like to explain-"
"There's nothing to explain, Finn," she whispered, looking away from him. "We have no ties. You're free to sleep with whoever you want. You never indicated—nor said—you loved me. I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have believed-"
"I do lass," Finn cut her off; his words soft and almost timid. "I do love ya."
"I know you care about me and love me as a... friend, I suppose. But-"
"No." He shook his head and took her uninjured hand gently. "I fell for ya last night. It happened fast, and it-"
"You have a rather poor way of showing it."
"I was—am—scared, Miracle. I've never been in love before. I-"
"Finn? You're not in love now." She stared into his eyes as a tear spilled down her cheek. "If you were, you wouldn't have felt the need to... do what you did. Or rather, your first instinct would have been to... share it with me—and only me. Besides, don't you think I'm scared?"
Not giving the Irishman time to reply, she shakily rose from the hospital bed and winced as she stood to her feet, refusing his assistance when he reached out to steady her. "I'm... I'm going to the restroom. And... I need you to be gone when I come out, Finn. Please." She gingerly walked to the bathroom and entered, clicking the door shut behind her.
Sighing in defeat, Finn walked out of the room.
}i{}i{}i{}i{}i{
The next morning, Miracle was being released from the hospital. Ella and Joe were helping her get her things together to leave when there was a knock at the door.
"What do you want," Joe demanded upon opening the door and seeing it was Finn who had knocked.
"I came to return Miracle's things," Finn said sheepishly. He indicated a computer case, a purse and a shopping bag from Toys R' Us.
"Fine. Leave them on the chair and leave."
"Daddy, stop it," Miracle said, making herself known and stepping toward FInn. "Thank you, Finn."
She reached for the bags and immediately handed the Toys R' Us bag back to him. "That was for you."
"I can't accept that, love."
"Please, Finn. I can't..." She recoiled from the bag as if it would burn her. "Just take it."
"Are ya gonna erase me from your life completely, Miracle?"
Having heard enough, Joe stepped forward. "If that's what she needs to do to feel better, then yes, Finn. She will."
"Daddy, stop it." Her dark eyes flashed briefly. Softening her tone she continued, "Could you and mom give us a few minutes? We do need to talk."
Reluctantly, Joe and Ella left the room, and Miracle sat down on the edge of the bed while Finn took a seat in a chair across from her.
"I was promoted to Creative," Miracle began softly. "Stephanie told me that I'd possibly need to fill in once in a while as a correspondent if they're short handed, but that I'll be part of the Creative team."
Finn gave her a cautious smile. "That's wonderful. When do you-"
"Stephanie had told me to take two weeks off for a vacation," Miracle interrupted him, the look in her eyes somewhat vacant. Finn wasn't sure he was going to like where her somber tone was headed.
Shouldn't she sound a bit more happy about it?
"But this morning I called her and told her about what happened. I told her that I need more time."
He nodded, "Well, I hate d'at ya won't be around f'r a while, but I agree d'at ya need some time. When do you think you'll be back though?"
"I don't know that I'm coming back at all, Finn."
If you want on my tag list, just ask! 🙂

Illness
Writer’s Month 2020 Day Nine
Part of my Shadowhunters Post-Canon Series
Read on AO3
Maryse Lightwood doesn’t get sick. She has trained her body to be a machine for fighting all things and that includes colds. Every sniffle that’s even come close to manifesting as a full blown illness has been fought off with runes aside from when she was pregnant with Alec and couldn’t use certain ones to protect the baby, she’d been much more cautious on the other two pregnancies ensuring that she didn’t so much as go outside in chilled air without at minimum seven layers on.
The problem is she can’t use runes anymore, her skin no longer bares the dark marks that once kept her safe. Not that if she could she’d have the strength to get out of bed and grab a stele right now.
But she has to find it in her because even though it’s Sunday the shop opens in an hour and she needs to shower, have breakfast, throw on a mask for everyone else’s benefit and just suck it up.
It takes almost fifteen minutes and twelve tissues but she works up the energy to stand and make it to the shower. She leans against the cool shower wall the entire time doing a cursory cleaning that she decides is more than enough.
She runs a comb through her long, wet hair, puts on the most comfortable and acceptable in public clothes she owns and is just about to make her breakfast when she sneezes so hard it knocks her right back into bed. She falls back letting gravity take her and groans loudly.
She tries to muster up the energy to get back up and just can’t find it instead opting to curl up on her side.
She reaches for her phone sending a quick text to her new mundane employee asking them to open up the store and take care of it for the day with a promise of overtime pay and then Luke to let him know she’ll be missing their date tonight.
Her phone buzzes with responses after she tosses it on the nightstand too tired to reach out and read them she assumes they’re just well wishes and she’ll get a call if it’s something more important. Her phone goes quiet after that and before she knows it she’s drifting off to sleep a handful of tissues clutched tightly in her hand.
By the time she wakes the suns a lot higher in the sky than it was when she literally fell back into bed. Her nose is stuffier than it had been, but her head does hurt a little less so small blessings she presumes.
She eyes the alarm clock by her bed and realizes it’s already nearing 4 o’clock, her stomach grumbles at the realization her appetite seemingly still intact despite the fact her head feels like it’s stuffed with cotton and mere moments away from exploding.
She looks down noticing she’s covered in a blanket she doesn’t recall pulling around herself when she hears the sound of pots and pans moving about in her kitchen. Her first instinct is pure Shadowhunter sitting up quickly despite the fact that her body protests grabbing the blade she keeps under her bed. She pulls the blanket around her shoulders and holds the blade ready to fight as she creeps out through her cracked bedroom door.
More shuffling comes from the kitchen, the sound of the fridge opening and closing when Maryse turns the corner blade at the ready.
She drops it to her side immediately upon seeing the muscled back of her boyfriend shifting back and forth between a pot on the stovetop and a pan sitting off to the side. He picks up the pan, opens the oven and bends over to place it inside giving Maryse a nice view of his backside.
“I almost stabbed you,” Maryse says hearing her voice for the first time all day. Her throat sounds scratchy and her congestion makes her sound like the little redheaded boy from the cartoon that Isabelle used to watch when she was a child. She shuffles over to the island that separates her small kitchen from her even smaller living room sitting down on one of the refurbished stools Luke got her for her birthday. “But I’m not complaining about the view.”
Luke turns and smiles a bright wide smile as she drops her blade on the counter. He walks over placing a glass of water in front of her.
She hums in thanks chugging down the whole thing in a few gulps. He gets to work on pouring her a glass of tea the warm scent of honey and ginger fills the air as he sits it down in front of her before filling her glass back up. She wraps her hands around the mug the warmth seeping into her fingertips as she inhales the scent best she can with her stuffed up nose.
“Feeling any better?” he asks checking whatever’s in the pot on the stove and putting a lid on it.
Maryse grimaces, “Not really. How long have you been here?”
Luke shrugs. “A few hours, I was worried when you didn’t answer my text so I drove over and found you passed out and surrounded by a ring of tissues. I popped out for some groceries to make you my mom’s spicy chicken noodle soup and biscuits, been cooking ever since.”
Maryse smiles hiding the grin in her mug as she takes a sip.
“You didn’t have to do all that, I don’t want you to get sick,” she says.
“I don’t have to, I want to,” he smiles rolling up his sleeves the dark runes she’s still getting used to being on his skin again showing. He leans on the counter running his fingers delicately along her hand that’s not holding the mug any longer. “It’s worth the risk of a little cold to take care of my lady.”
She smiles again not hiding it in her drink this time. She can’t remember a time when someone cared for her the way Luke does. Her only romantic relationship really ever had been Robert and even at his sweetest moments early on in their marriage he was never this kind, this caring. He never so much as brought her a mug of tea when she had a headache and here Luke is making sure she’s comfortable, making her homemade family recipes and just taking gentle care of her. It’s all so thrilling in its simplicity.
“Weren’t you supposed to be on a diplomatic mission today?” she asks tangling their fingers together lightly.
He nods running a thumb along her knuckles.
“I was, but I’ve got this in with the Head of the Institute so he offered to go in my place,” he smirks. Luke’s close bond with Alec, and all her children, is just another reason Maryse adores him so. “Warlocks like him better anyways,” he adds with a kiss to her knuckles before pulling away to check on the biscuits in the oven.
He bends over again and she whistles playfully the sound a little aborted because of her congestion but the meaning gets across nonetheless. Luke laughs shaking his ass a little to play along.
Not long after that he sets her up on the couch with an ice-cold bottle of water, some more tea, three boxes of tissues and the British cooking competition she’s grown to love playing on the tv. He joins her after a while two bowls of delicious chicken noodle soup and a plate of warm biscuits on a tray. He settles beside her pulling her in close under his arm his free hand not holding a spoon for his own soup softly running across her hair.
She finishes her soup and somewhere between the mean guy with the blue eyes critiquing someone’s cake ruthlessly and the next episode playing automatically she drifts back off to sleep this time with Luke’s warm chest and strong arms around her.

Another DayRead on AO3
Maryse couldn’t hold back the gasp that burst out of her lungs when Luke pushed open the door to her book store. She noticed the lack of his beard first, something she hadn’t seen since she had first met him. He looked younger, like he did as a shadowhunter boy, following his parabatai to the ends of the earth. The second thing she noted were the runes decorating his forearms and peeking out of his neckline. She had to hold onto a bookshelf behind her as she felt her knees go weak.
Luke was there in a moment, holding onto her waist to keep her standing. Maryse thought it had to be a dream, a nightmare maybe, but Luke couldn’t be...
She reached for his shirt and pulled it down roughly. Her other hand covered her mouth as she saw the calm anger rune dark against his skin. She traced it with her fingertip before pressing her palm against it. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. She traced it blindly, unable to erase the memorization of it from her mind.
“Mar--” She grabbed his chin in her hand and turned his head so she could get a better view of his neck. The fortitude rune stood out on his skin, uncoverable in the warm weather. Her fingertips brushed it, the intricate lines barely a shadow of a memory. She whispered the name, almost to herself, but Luke heard it. He reached a hand up to grab the hand at his chin, moving his face so he could search her eyes. Maryse laced their fingers together and tears sprung to her eyes at the iratze on his wrist. It was reddened, recently used, and fear shot through her as she finally looked into Luke’s eyes.
“You’re, you’re--” Maryse breath gasped out of her as she pressed her lips to Luke’s, an overwhelming sense of joy flooding through her. Luke seemed to release the breath he had been holding at her reaction.
“I’m a shadowhunter… Again,” Luke explained, a small chuckle on his lips. Maryse searched his eyes as if waiting for them to glow the way she was used to and cupped his face in her hands.
“How did this happen?” Maryse asked. She was only slightly aware of her fingertips tracing every visible rune on Luke’s body, eliciting a shiver from him. She could see the bumps rising on his skin when he reached up to push her hair from her face and hold her face in his hands. His hands were cold, the temperature difference drastically noticeable, but Maryse leaned into the touch anyway.
“That’s a long story for another day,” Luke said as he pressed their foreheads together. Maryse nodded and let out a watery giggle as she looked into his eyes. She searched for any semblance of regret or anger or hurt and when she found none, she rested her palms across the runes on his chest and neck.
“Another day,” Maryse agreed and kissed him again, neither of their smiles disappearing even as she turned the open sign to closed.

The Lucky Ones
(Read on AO3) (a little something inspired by @alittlebriton who was interested in a moment where Jace tells Maryse and Magnus about Alec’s vampire idea)
The group that gathers around the table, at a glance, seems almost haphazardly thrown together. Maryse, Luke, Alec, Magnus, Izzy, and Jace are all gathered in Magnus and Alec’s apartment. They’re sitting together around the table magically elongated to fit the larger-than-normal number of people they’re hosting that evening.
To fit their family.
Before now Alec and Izzy were kept to drink duty after insisting on ‘helping’ despite being banned from touching any of the food, while Magnus and Maryse managed the actual cooking and Jace and Luke were, for their parts, more than content to lounge around chatting. Most of it was casual but when their voices grow quiet and their expressions somber everyone gave them some space, knowing without having to ask that the conversation turned to Clary again.
It’s been over a week since Magnus and Alec returned from their honeymoon and once everyone seemed more or less settled back into their daily lives and new normals the newlyweds wasted no time before insisting on having everyone over for dinner and a proper celebration. After the whirlwind of events surrounding the proposal and wedding the group has plenty to talk about now that they’re all here for a few hours of nothing but interrupted time together - no work, no crises, no clients.
Despite a few more serious topics covered in their initial catching up it’s nothing but smiles and laughter after a drink or two when they all come together for dinner to be served.
“So, Luke, how does it feel to be back to your old self again?” Magnus asks curiously.
“It’s strange, I’ll admit. I’ve been a werewolf for so long I forgot what it feels like to be a Shadowhunter. But it’s… it feels good. It feels right, somehow. Though part of me misses being a Downworlder already.”
“The Downworld definitely lost one of it’s best, but I think we’ll manage.” Magnus says, only half-teasing, the fondness in his tone evident.
Jace pauses a moment as if considering something, and the flash of a mischievous smirk that crosses his lips after a glance in Alec’s direction is the only warning Alec has before it’s too late to stop whatever his brother is about to say.
“Are you sure? If not, Alec could always trade over, seeing how eager he was the other week to learn first-hand what being a vampire is all about...” Jace suggests.
“What are you going on about?” Maryse asks, clearly not following.
Alec shoots Jace a warning glance that goes entirely unheeded. In fact, the fact that Alec doesn’t want him to tell the others only encourages the wicked glint in Jace’s eyes.
“Didn’t he tell you?” Jace continues, pointedly ignoring Alec’s foot nearly missing his shin under the table. “Alec was about three seconds away from evening that Downworlder-to-Shadowhunter ratio again when he thought turning himself into a vampire was the only way he’d survive Edom.”
“Alexander what?”
“Excuse me?”
Magnus and Maryse both react at once, Magnus nearly spitting out the sip of wine he’s in the middle of swallowing while Maryse’s eyes grow impossibly wide, mouth hanging open.
Alec looks over at Jace with a glare; his brother obviously knows exactly what he’s doing putting that information out there. Information which, up until this point, only he, Jace, Isabelle, and Simon know about.
“We didn’t have any other options!” Alec defends.
“Please tell me you weren’t seriously considering that,” Maryse asks, her tone practically pleading. “You’re supposed to be the one I don’t have to worry about, always so calm and level headed.”
“Hey!” Jace and Izzy both shout in affront.
“We had to stop him. So you’re welcome,” Jace adds pointedly.
“Well, us and Simon, who apparently has more self-preservation skills than turning the Head of the Institute into a vampire in  the middle of the Institute on a whim.” Isabelle adds, relishing the chance to gang up on Alec for a change.
“It wasn’t a whim-” Alec starts, but gives up with a sigh knowing it’s useless. “It was… impulsive. I’ll admit.”
“I don’t know why I’m surprised,” Magnus declares, shaking his head slowly side to side. “He told me if I couldn’t leave Edom with him that he planned on staying behind with me.”
Now it’s Jace and Izzy’s turn to join their mother in shocked disbelief, all eyes on Alec who doesn't even try to deny it at this point. “It didn’t matter how, I was going to be with Magnus again. Here, or there. Shadowhunter or not. Whatever it took, I was getting you back and never letting go again.” Alec's gaze turns from Maryse and the others to Magnus at the end of that statement, eyes full of emotion.
There’s a waiver to Alec’s voice at the very idea of losing Magnus again, clearly thinking about the ‘what-if’ of his plans not working out, of the very real potential of Magnus being lost to Edom forever. Magnus sees it and immediately places the fork from his hand back onto his plate to grab both of Alec’s hands in his own.
“And you never have to,” he reassures. “We’re here, together, and no one is a vampire or trapped in Edom for the rest of their lives. But promise me if something like that ever happens again you’ll give it a least a week before you condemn yourself to an eternity of darkness and drinking blood to survive?”
“No, I’m sorry,” Maryse chimes in with a look of indignation. She knows how much Magnus means to him, she knew the moment Magnus left and Alec barely slept trying to find a way to get him back, but this… these are extremes which hadn’t even crossed her mind no matter how deep that love runs. “But you were planning to stay in Edom, and you didn’t even bother to call your mother before leaving?”
Alec winces, looking actually regretful for the first time since this conversation began. “It wasn’t the optimal outcome, obviously, just a last resort. There wasn’t time-” “There is always time to call your mother.” Maryse can’t keep the traumatized look off of her face at this new revelation.
Magnus can’t help but laugh at that even though he knows the timing of his half-snort is poor, and then he’s forced to explain the reaction when heads turn in his direction. “This sounds strikingly familiar. Are you sure you haven’t met my father before, Maryse?”
Now it’s Izzy’s turn to sputter. “You did not just compare my mother to a Greater Demon,” she says, stifling a giggle behind her hand.
They all know what they’re doing at this point. The conversation is too serious for the dinner they want to have, light and loving and a celebration of the fact that everything worked out without these troubling outcomes. They can’t just not acknowledge it now that it’s out there - they all know this won't be the last time these topics will come up - but dissolving some of the tension helps for now.
“You’re lucky I love you,” Maryse says, fixing Magnus with a failed attempt at a glare because it’s true, and there’s simply too much fondness in her gaze to pretend to be offended by the joke.
One simple glance around the group confirms it isn't just Maryse. Every face at this table holds nothing but love and acceptance and the promise of a family life Magnus never imagined himself getting in all his centuries.
“I am, aren't I?” Magnus smiles.
“I think we all are,” Alec chimes in. It isn’t lost on him, or any of them, the weight of Maryse sitting at a table expressing anything other than contempt for two Downworlders and a gay Shadowhunter, son or not.
“I'll drink to that,” Luke confirms, raising his glass for a cheers that’s eagerly joined by everyone present.
“Oh!” Izzy exclaims as her glass drops away from her lips suddenly. “You’ll never guess who came by the Institute today to visit Underhill…”  The tone shifts back to smiles and casual conversation for the rest of the night, and for a little while they all silently agree that the concerns of the world they’re all part of and the weight of the troubles that face them when they leave these walls can wait, just this once.

Ave Atque Vale Shadowhunters
BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT THESE SHIPS & THIS ENDGAME...
Luke x Maryse vacationing in Brazil! Their character development was EVERYTHING. They are better together and it shows. YAY... Lightway??? Garrowood???
Tumblr media
Magnus x Alec!! Aka High Warlock of Alicante x Mr. Inquisitor!!! The Power couple of all power couples got everything they deserved and are literally changing hearts and minds everywhere.
PLUS the Malac wedding was beautiful. Entirely too short but still beautiful. It was nice seeing everyone, even minor characters, tie up their storylines with pretty little bows at the reception.
Tumblr media
Simon x Izzy!!! Finally! I would take this Deputy Vampire Author x Head of the New York Institute pairing anyday of the week. Give me more. No, seriously. More please.
Tumblr media
Did Magnus call Clary "Biscuit"?! I melt. This show is such an ensemble and I love it.
Jace forever reminding Alec of their parabatai bond is so soft.
Also, I'm LIVING for Jace training Simon and booping him... I wanted to see them grow.
AND Clary asking Izzy to be her parabatai... dang.
Tumblr media
Clary x Jace!!!! The Trainer x the Art Student!
Their ending was cinematically perfect and was what the show needed in order to feel like it came full circle. Her being punished and loosing her memories was a bit of a waste *imo* (it either needed to be cut or given more screentime) but I genuinely appreciate what they were going for and the end scene was totally worth it. Because SHE REMEMBERS HIM despite everything.
Tumblr media
I cannot not appreciate the little details here.
Clary wrote in her letter to Jace that "Even if I don't remember you, you will always be in my heart." Then her heartbeat sounds as her last rune disappears and she forgets everything about the shadow world. Clarys heartbeat sounds again when she touches Jaces rune outside of the art gallery because he is in her heart and SHE REMEMBERS HIM and her love for him will never die!
And 'Where We Come Alive' by Ruelle... how perfect was that song choice!?! "I can see the future painted in my eyes." As Clary stands in front of her paintings of her missing memories. "Open up the door and fade into the light." When she sees Jace and the door to her past literally opens. "Dive into a world I know. Take my hands and follow me into the sun. There's no end ´cause ooh this is where we come alive." As she follows him into the the alley and calls him by name. THEN "Out of the shadows and into the light, bringing the unknown. This is where we come alive." Plays as Jace, along with her unknown past, are able to step out of the shadow. And she comes alive with the beating of her own heart.
By the Angels.. I love the imagery and symbolism of it all!!! A++
Tumblr media
Speaking of light... was the light at the very end Jacelyn? It reminded me of the ball of light that turned into her earlier in the episode. Or was it Raziel? Definately looked similar to the same golden light from 2x20. Ithuriel is dead, right? So it couldnt have been him...??? Either way, the angels are watching and they heard Jace's prayers (he prayed every single day that their love was stronger than any spite, which it clearly is) and now CLARY REMEMBERS HIM.
We got ALL the ships *imo* and now it's over and it was so much better than I could have imagined that we would get.
Even Jonathans final scene was beautiful and surprisingly redeeming. Clary finally got to save the boy in the tower from himself.
Tumblr media
*i feel for those that didnt get the ending that they needed. i know the feeling all too well. i dont want a ship war on my hands. nothing but respect here. hail and farewell.*
