hulijing, the little traitor, is sitting with her chin on di feisheng's knee, tail wagging as she looks up at him adoringly. di feisheng, for his part, is stroking her ears and smiling more gently than li lianhua has ever seen. it's sort of unfair. li lianhua clears his throat and, other than a twitch of one of hulijing's ears, is summarily ignored by both of them. how rude!

"lao di," he tries, sidling up alongside the bench di feisheng's seated on. that gets him a questioning hum, but little else. li lianhua eases himself down onto the bench, legs opposite di feisheng's, and cozies up to breathe, "a'fei?" into his ear.

"yes?" says di feisheng, without looking up from the dog. li lianhua frowns. really! he leans across to block di feisheng's view instead and, while he's still blinking in confusion, kisses him squarely on the mouth.

li lianhua feels the brush of di feisheng's eyelashes against his cheek as his eyes close. he allows the rather aggressive entrance of li lianhua's tongue, tilting his head to adjust the angle and kissing back. somewhere in the part of his brain not wholly wrapped up in di feisheng, li lianhua hears hulijing sigh and pad away. his heart does a little fistpump. sorry, hulijing, he'll make it up to you later.

"what was that for," di feisheng says once li lianhua lets him up. li lianhua smiles, content.

"nothing," he says, "i just thought you looked cute."

di feisheng's eyebrows go up. "cute? me?"

"yes," li lianhua says, smile widening. "you."

di feisheng squints at him. "what goes on in that head of yours?"

"don't worry about it," li lianhua says, and kisses him again.

Di Feisheng lets down Li Lianhua's hair with the practiced ease of familiarity, running his fingers through it a couple times before retrieving the comb from the vanity. "What do you do to get it so tangled," he murmurs, working through the knots at the bottom first, "All you do is water plants and lay in the sun." It's not a question that needs an answer and Li Lianhua simply hums in response, letting Di Feisheng tilt his head this way and that as he combs through his hair.

I adore the contrast in how CY and XSY view xiayi and the jianghu, and their roles acting as a part of it. For XSY, xiayi is experienced through the huge, sweeping emotions of these wuxia stories, while for CY it's about the mundane actions that still stem from a sense of chivalry and righteousness, however small. As well, to XSY wuxia media is a path for one to escape into the jianghu and live vicariously for a while, but for CY it's a way to bring part of the jianghu into one's own everyday life. It's interesting to see how their views differ, and how those understandings of wuxia translated to/shaped their characters (because if you look at DFS and LLH, they absolutely did). These two are such dedicated actors. I could listen to them talk forever about things like this.
