Woke up to Owen Lars thoughts. Specifically re: C-3PO.
Our guy Owen has avoided owning a droid for 20+ years because they remind him of Shmi. He’s had to deal with the Jawas the whole time and knows it would go a hell of a lot better with a translator, but every time he thinks about getting a protocol droid he thinks about Shmi. About how she doted on that insufferably annoying droid because it was her last connection to her son. And he decides he can go another year relying on gestures and paying more than the parts he’s getting are worth.
But now he only has Luke’s help for one more harvest and he’s not getting any younger - his joints ache more and more with each sandstorm - and he decides it’s time to face his ghosts. He can’t avoid reminders of the past forever. He sends Luke for some droids.
And the boy comes back with C3P0
The droid doesn’t look the same - he’s been treated to some upgrades over the years and some fancy gold plating they couldn’t have afforded to give him - but he gives his designation and it’s not just a similar robotic voice dragging up memories that both haunt Owen and remind him of better times. But it’s him, without a doubt. C-3PO human cyborg relations. Shmi’s most prized possession. Returned back to her home and final resting place, back to the last piece of her son.
To Luke.
And when the stormtroopers break down the door and pour in, he has a moment of pure relief that Luke isn’t home. That this time it won’t be a Skywalker’s body found broken in the desert.
He should have known. An R2 unit had rolled up and interrupted Shmi’s humble funeral and Anakin had swept away to whatever dangers waited for him in the stars. He’d brought the two droids with him and the Lars were left to mourn and heal and carry on under the harsh suns. They looked after themselves and weathered the heat and the sand like everything else that was born, and fated to die, in the desert.
But not Luke. Luke wasn’t born on Tatooine, even though the boy has the desert in his blood. Owen sees the same relief written in Beru’s eyes as he takes her hand. Luke isn’t going to die here.
He has the stars in his blood too.
Owen just hopes the boy will meet a better end than his father. That his story won’t end so soon.

rewatching Bride of Reanimator and God I'll never get over the scene where Herbert is literally giving Dan a heart
yes it's Megs but you know damn well that was his way of giving Dan his own heart
I see so many people headcanon Herbert as super mean to Dan and unable to understand affection but he did shit like this and is constantly giving Dan physical affection
he's not nearly as cold as people make him out to be, especially to Dan
He is so fucking in love its crazy

This year has gone by fast! There are only 44 more days left of 2023 so to celebrate I’m gonna make a post about five extinct animals that were described this year!
1. Bos primigenius thrinacius n. ssp.
Tumblr media
(Bos primigenius thrinacius n. ssp. Size estimate of a bull, cow, and calf compared to a human and an adult Palaeoloxodon falconeri. Art by Joschua Knüppe)
This new sub species of Aurochs lived on the Greek island of Kythera during the Late Pleistocene. The sub species was probably present on Kythera while it was still part of the mainland, but became trapped when it was separated sometime during the Middle to Late Pleistocene and their small size was a result of insular dwarfism. Insular dwarfism is a common phenomenon in evolution where a population of large animals becomes trapped on an island and slowly evolve to become smaller over time to better adapt to the reduced space and resources. The opposite, insular gigantism, where an island-bound population of small animals grows larger than their mainland counterparts also occurs regularly. During the Pleistocene, the various islands of Greece were full of giant swans and miniature elephants but now we know they had tiny cattle roaming about as well.
2. Garumbatitan morellensis
Tumblr media
(Size comparison between Garumbatitan morellensis and a human. Art by cisiopurple on Deviantart)
Meaning “Garumba Giant”, Garumbatitan morellensis was a species of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period in what is now Spain. Its remains were first discovered in 1998 at the Arcillas de Morella Formation near the city of Morella, however, they would not be excavated until an expedition in 2005. More material would later be discovered in a 2008 expedition and a paper would be published on the findings in 2016, but it wasn’t until this year that the species was officially named and described. Its genus named is a mix of the name for the tallest mountain in the region it was discovered in, Mola de la Garumba, and the Greek word “Titan”.
3. Nihohae matakoi
Tumblr media
(A pair of Nihohae matakoi hunting some squid. Art by Daniel Verhelst)
Nihohae matakoi was a species of dolphin that belonged to the now extinct Waipatiid family and lived during the Oligocene in the waters surrounding what is now New Zealand. It possessed a bizarre set of tusk-like teeth that protruded from its beak. It is thought that this dolphin used it’s strange teeth much like a sawfish to stun their prey before consuming them. The holotype specimen was discovered all the way back in 1998 in Awamoko Valley on New Zealand’s South Island. The specimen consisted of a nearly complete skull, a single atlas and axis, eight vertebrae, and seven ribs. However, Nihohae matakoi would not be officially described until 2023. Its genus name combines the Māori words “Niho”, meaning “teeth”, and “Hae”, meaning “slashing”. The species name is also derived from Māori and comes from the words “Mata”, meaning “face” or “point”, and “Koi”, meaning “sharp”.
4. Perucetus colossus
Tumblr media
(A pair of Perucetus swim together in the shallows. Art by Gabuded on Deviantart)
Another cetacean, Perucetus colossus was a species of early whale that lived during the Bartonian age of the Middle Eocene and was found in Peru (obviously). The remains we have or Perucetus are pretty fragmentary, but it has an estimated length of around 55.8-65.9 ft and was probably just as, if not heavier, than the modern Blue Whale. Due to the density of its bones and its absolute chonkiness, Perucetus likely was not a fast swimmer and likely lived in shallow waters and fed on crustaceans and mollusks. However, this is just speculation as very little about its ecology is known.
5. Vectipelta barretti
Tumblr media
(A pair of Vectipelta barretti graze near a stream. Art by Stuart Pond)
Vectipelta barretti was an ankylosaurian dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous in what is now England. It was discovered in the Wessex Formation and it’s genus name means “Isle of Wight shield”. The holotype specimen of Vectipelta was originally discovered in November of 1993, however, at the time it was believed that the specimen belonged to the genus Polacanthus. In May of 2021 it was discovered that the specimen was in fact a new genus and in June of 2023 it was officially named and described. Funnily enough, fossil evidence suggests that Vectipelta might be millions of years older than Polacanthus, the genus it was originally thought to be a member of.
I hope you all enjoyed reading about these recently described prehistoric species! I LOVE dinosaurs and other extinct animals and can’t wait to see what new discoveries 2024 has to offer!

hi ^-^!! aunt peru fanclub reporting to duty! I have a question, and I'm wondering if you've thoughts on this and would like to share:
in a world where obi-wan properly gets to know owen and beru and luke, when and how does it start? what would be their spark of connection, and what makes them stay?
Ahhh I’m going to be thinking of this all day! Thank you 💕
I really like the sort of canon ish idea that Obi-Wan has been keeping an eye out on the farm from day one. He keeps the tuskens and any bandits coming through away. He sneaks up and does repairs in the night. When there’s a drought he leaves extra water.
It drives Owen absolutely crazy. Not just because he can provide for his own family thank-you-very-much but he doesn’t want to risk any association with Obi-Wan. Not ever.
But I’d like to think that after the events of the Kenobi series he loosens up a little bit. Beru finds him patrolling and offers him water. Luke gets to know, just a little bit, crazy Ben who lives over that way - who is paranoid about strangers but nice enough and always lends a hand. When sandstorms tank the vaporators and Owen is worried how the farm will keep going he begrudgingly accept his help, although he grumbles under his breath and glares at Ben as they work and somehow interrupts anything he says unrelated to parts and brings it back to water taxes.
So when it comes time for A New Hope, there’s a baseline of trust there, at the least. After all, Luke’s always been told that if anything happens - if Tuskens come hunting, if his aunt and uncle disappear, if people show up asking questions that give Luke that bad feeling in his belly - go to Ben. Run to his little hut and hide there until things are safe. Everything will be ok.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
I finally saw the movie (took me long enough lol) and....AHHHHHHHHH YYYEEESSSSSS
Idk if this counts as spoilers but I am so glad the movie didn't do that trope of "aliens build this" when talking about the achievements of actual people. The trope doesn't necessarily ruin a movie for me but it's so nice that the movie actually had it stated that the Nazca lines were actually made by the Incas.
Also, seeing an actual festival of Peru made me so f**cking happy. And seeing more to Peru than just Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is an important to Peru, but it was so nice to see other landscapes and again...THE FESTIVAL!
I also did not expect to hear actual Quechua either!
And yes, Peru does have good food (if you know you know)
