Grief

Ben set his phone aside and let the music spilling mournfully from the speakers twine around him as he reached for the bright red, round hawthorn berries. Hawthorn for grief and heartache, to heal a broken heart.

He placed his handful of berries on the cutting board and worked steadily on slicing them. His knife cut through them easily, as easily as callous words cut through his heart, but he was mindful of his fingers as he worked through his small pile and set them in a bowl once he was done with them.

Next were the linden leaves. They were known to calm hearts and aid in times of grief. Ben reached out and pulled his mortar and pestle close and pressed the cleaned leaves into the granite. He didn’t want to mash the leaves, only gently muddle them so they would better release their essence.

He scooped up the sliced hawthorn berries and the muddled linden leaves and placed them in the small saucepan on the stove. He added hot water from his kettle and turned the stove on, setting the flame to low, and took a step back.

He had a small jar of rose honey–rose to ease the heat of anger and heal heart wounds–to mix with the tea he was making.

Maybe, if he was lucky, this would fix the bitterness and the endless urge to weep and the regrets that kept getting caught in his throat. If he was lucky, the tea would drain away his grief and heal his poor ragged heart. (As much as he loved tea, even he knew that was a lot to put on a single cup.) But maybe, just maybe, it would drain away enough that Ben could breathe past the lump in his throat. Maybe then he could speak and they could fix this and the tears spilt would be tears wasted.

(Or maybe he would need to place an order for tulsi and face his new reality.)
