Sorry i tried to scroll past but, i know nothing about f1 other than max verstappen is fast, my dad doesnt like lewis hamilton, fast car goes in a loop and sometimes expodes. Could you give me a crash course in f1 drama? Im very intrigued. Whats the tea as it were?
a terribly loaded question, but i will do my best. i’ve talked about some of the drama before like the red bull second seat and the chronicles of haas but allow me to briefly try my hand at explaining the nightmare that is the upcoming silly season
under the cut we go
silly season is when the drivers go through contract renewals, extensions and switches. usually it’s confined to the first half of the season (march-july) but it has been known to extend all the way to the last race of the season and they like to switch people around at random sometimes. driver contracts are complex, there’s a lot of money involved and basically You Are The Face Of The Team so if you have a shit season then you make the team look bad. but at the same time you could have a shit season because you have a shit car. it’s sticky stuff.
so. there are only twenty seats in formula 1. 10 teams. each team gets two drivers. (there’s also reserve drivers but we’re not going to get into that). who ends up with a contract is largely up to the teams, they can pull the contract out from under people they can also cut you mid season. they’ve done it before.
of the 20 drivers on the grid, 14 of them have contracts expiring at the end of the year. yes. 14. you see how this could get complicated.
so let’s meet the teams.
red bull racing. they came first this year (and last year) in the championship. like aggressively first. like they won the championship by over 350 points. they are definitely the team to beat. but if you end up with a seat at red bull, you do have to deal with max verstappen being your teammate and he won all but three of the races last year. he’s the golden boy. red bull are also notoriously silly when it comes to contracts and famously swap people mid season who aren’t performing.
mercedes. merc is home to 7 time world champion lewis hamilton and they have won the championship a great many times, though not since 2021. they are kind of in their flop arc and their car the last 2 years has been pretty garbage, but they have still made it work because they were able to come in second last year.
ferrari. god help the poor little meow meows with a ferrari contract. ferrari is a notoriously great team and they’re trying to get back to the top again but their strategy every single time has fallen short. to the point where their drivers are the ones doing the strategy in their cars while driving. they came in third last year and have been decently consistent at getting first in qualifying and then getting beat by max verstappen on race day.
mclaren. they’ve definitely worked their way up over recent years. they ended fourth last year and have had some championship wins before but not nearly as many as say merc and ferrari. their team ceo (owner? director?) is a little interesting and their car started out a pile of flaming hot garbage at the beginning of the year but they did manage to get their shit together.
aston martin. they are owned by canadian billionaire lawrence stroll, father of lance stroll (one of the drivers for the team). they’ve undergone several name changes over the recent years (force india, racing point, etc). they positively slayed at the start of the season and then one day they sucked. they finished fifth in the championship.
alpine. the frenchest french team. they’re (i think?) still partially owned by the french government. both of their drivers are french. (their drivers also hate eachother but we’ll get to that. just know they’re in the middle of a modern french civil war). they had the opportunity to have a good rookie driver (oscar piastri) this past year but in a thrilling twitter battle, he publically flamed the shit out of them and went to mclaren instead (and slayed). they're usually solidly middle of the pack. they ended sixth in the championship.
williams. williams has been one of the back of the grid teams for the last many years but they have finally started to get their shit together and don’t quite suck as much as they used to. all of the points this year were scored by only one driver though (except one but we’ll get there). they came in seventh.
alpha tauri. they are the sister team of red bull. so technically redbull owns both teams (meaning they can swap drivers between teams. they like doing this.) they’ve just kind of been There for awhile but they did slay towards the end of the season when one of their drivers led the race for several laps. basically tho, this team is the gateway to redbull. they came in eighth.
alpha romeo. recently renamed to stake f1 team (but sometimes they are going to be called kick sauber. this is a whole other drama post and i’m not getting into it). they’re also just kind of there. generally unproblematic. seems that really great drivers who get ixed out of a contract for a younger driver end up here or young drivers who are in their early years are here before they go to a better team. they ended ninth this year.
haas. oh haas. goofy team. they suck. point blank they suck. they keep loosing sponsors because they suck, they don’t win ever (one time they came first in qualifying last year). they cursed themselves in australia in 2018 by not tightening their tires and its been downhill ever since. they came 10th. their team principle got let go (fired?) who’s to say today.
so those are the teams. it is important to note that:
-there is a cost cap. each team is allowed to spend no more than 135m per year.
-not all cars are equal. some things are standard. they all undergo the same testing. but the cars are all very different. so you can be a good driver but stuck in a shitty car. which makes it impressive if you are doing well in a shitty car.
let’s meet our drivers!!!
starting with the guys who’s contract is not ending in 2024:
max verstappen. 3 time world champion. 26 years old. general beast on the track. he dominated the whole season. he’s currently racing for red bull and has a contract with them through 2028.
lewis hamilton. 7 time world champion. 39 years old. he drives for mercedes. he will not leave mercedes until he retires. he really really wants to win an 8th world championship and is willing to stick it out a few more years as long as merc still believes in him. his contract expires in 2025.
george russell. the other merc driver. 26 years old. hes aggressively british and says thinks like blimey unironically. walking meme. got his merc seat in 2022 right when they entered their flop arc by getting his tractor of a williams to finish second in qualifying in the middle of a rainstorm. his contract expires in 2025.
lando norris. mclaren driver. 24 years old. he has notably never won a race in his five years of formula one (mostly because right when his car finally was good enough max verstappen was 20 seconds ahead of anyone) but he is regarded as Very Good. he has only ever driven for mclaren. and even though there is another year left on his contract there is mass speculation that he will not renew his contract with mclaren after it expires and he may move up to one of the top teams (red bull, merc, ferrari) (tho i think he doesnt hate himself quite enough to go to ferrari). his contract expires in 2025.
oscar piastri. the other mclaren driver. 22 years old. this was his rookie season and he positively slayed. like people compared his rookie season to lewis hamiltons rookie season. he also had the positively funniest start to his rookie year because alpine announced that he would be driving for them (he had been their reserve driver and in the alpine academy) and he posted a tweet that basically said yeah thats false i never singed anything with you and im going to race with mclaren instead (he dodged a bullet) and then alpine tried and failed to sue him for $4m USD. he signed a contract extension with mclaren this year and his contract expires in 2026.
lance stroll. aston martin driver and son of the aston martin owner. hes doing ok, tho there was conspiracy that he wanted to quit and have a tennis career awhile ago. but basically since his dad owns the team it seems that hes guaranteed a seat for as long as he wants one.
so now. moving onto the good shit. the people who have contracts expiring in 2024. hold onto your hats people.
charles leclerc. (everyones favorite slutty little soup can). 26 years old. he is currently at ferrari and he has been since 2019. notably, he was given the longest contract in the history of ferrari after a stellar rookie season at sauber (renamed to alpha romeo, renamed to stake f1) where he got the tractor of a car consistently into the points. having the longest contract in the history of ferrari was a flex at the time, but now its likely how he will introduce himself at therapy sessions. ferrari have fucked this man left right and center up the ass with a plastic lunchroom spork. hes talented, he can drive, and he can drive well. but the strategy that ferrari has absolutely sucks. either something is wrong with the car (see him blowing out his gear box on the formation lap in monaco, his car completely crapping out and spinning into the barrier in brazil before the race even started) or they fuck up his pit stops or put him on the wrong tires and honestly its just frustrating. but will he leave??? likely not. you'd have to pry ferrari out of his cold dead hands and at this rate that might be where this is headed though there has been some minor speculation of him going to another team like merc or red bull, but merc doesnt have any open seats and red bull is a whole other dumpster fire of drama. ferrari are going to have to pay him a boatload of money to make him stay.
carlos sainz. the smooth operator. 29 years old. ferrari driver. previously carlos was at toro rosso (renamed to alpha tauri), renault (renamed to alpine), and mclaren before signing with ferrari. he has been at ferrari since 2021 and has voiced that he would like to stay with them for however long he can. there is speculation that lando might replace him at ferrari (but landos contract is not up until 2025) and there is also some speculation that alex albon might replace him. while charles is clearly the golden boy at ferrari, carlos is slightly slower but also definitely consistent. he was THE ONLY non red bull driver to win a race this past year, in Singapore after max verstappedn was knocked out of qualifying by alpha tauri reserve driver liam lawson (more on him later) and because he basically came up with his own strategy in the car while he was driving.
sergio perez. aka checo. red bull driver. 33 years old. and oh boy here's where we open the can of worms. checo was previously at racing point (renamed aston martin) and it was very near the end of the 2020 (?) season and he was out of a contract. he had a bonkers race where he was knocked to the back of the grid and then overtook everyone and somehow ended up winning (there is more to that story but just trust me) and christian horner, red bull team principle, mr ginger spice and definite disney villain called him and said congrats sir you have a seat at red bull! well. fast forward. hes been causing problems. problems as in crashing a lot, generally not doing great and pissing the crap out of red bull. it is basically guaranteed at this point that he will not be getting a contract extension. there was actually talk this year of him losing his seat mid season to one of the alpha tauri drivers, because remember, red bull owns both teams and they can switch them whenever they want to (and they have!) but ultimately this did not happen. even though checo has a seat at red bull until the end of 2024, its mass speculated that he is going to get switched with an alpha tauri driver, probably daniel ricciardo (more on him shortly) mid season because there is a speculated clause in daniels contract that says that if checo isn't performing well in the first few races daniel is getting his seat.
daniel ricciardo. 34 years old. alpha tauri driver. man oh man what a guy. outside of being the prankster of the paddock, he has one of the most batshit careers of anyone currently on the grid. he started out at red bull and was showing real talent and skill and was on track to win things (and was!) and was there until the end of 2018 when max verstappen (his teammate) started getting preferential treatment and also red bull started having a lot of problems with their engines (which were being outsourced from Renault (now alpine) and another team on the grid) and well very very long story short he made the surprise move of the century and decided to sign with Renault (which makes no sense they're the one with the engine problems) and was there for 2 years before moving again to mclaren where he was reportedly not treated very well and had a hard time driving the car so they mutually ended his contract with them early and he basically retired at the end of the 2022 season and became a red bull reserve driver. then halfway through the 2023 season alpha tauri ixed one of their drivers, nyck de vries, because he wasnt doing well and promoted daniel back up to a full time driver at alpha tauri (which we know is only a step down from red bull) but then he broke his hand in a crash in zanvort (?) and then he was replaced for a few races by formula 2 driver liam lawson (who we will also talk about) and then he came back to finish out the season in alpha tauri after he was cleared. daniel has admitted openly that he never should have left red bull and he was given bad advice to do so. hes towards the end of his career at this point and its well known that he Really Really wants to finish out his career at red bull again. he and max have already been teammates before and they do work well together and daniel is great driver (see his comeback in texas (or maybe it was brazil?) this year). so. Pretty Sure that daniels going to get either an extension at alpha tauri or go up to red bull. thats what we all want. get this man in a red bull we need him there biblically.
liam lawson. now technically liam is not actually a formula 1 driver. hes a formula 2 driver, but he was daniels replacement for five races and there has been some speculation and some confirmed news about him so hes getting included. when he was racing for f1 he was at alpha tauri. hes 21 and looks like he belongs in the movie grease. no one was expecting him to slay in formula 1 and he positively knocked everyones socks off. the scene: Singapore. which, if you'll recall, is the one race that a not red bull driver won. this was largely because liam lawson slayed the absolute game in qualifying. the qualifying part of racing determines what order the cars start in on the grid for the race and theres three parts, the first two parts the bottom 5 drivers each time get knocked out and then the top 10 complete for the last 10 spots. liam lawson knocked BOTH max verstappen and checo perez out of qualifying in the second round by going very slightly faster than them, effectively fucking up red bulls race and allowing carlos to win. and he also scored points in that race, which no one was expecting. now thats all fine and dandy, but here's the speculation: hemlut marko (im pretty sure) (who is somehow decently involved in the decision making at red bull though i couldn't tell you how) said that he thinks that liam lawson will be in an f1 seat no later than 2025. meaning that he will probably get offered a contract this year. and hes already raced for alpha tauri. red bull have sunk a good amount of money into him. they clearly want him. so if he gets offered an alpha tauri seat in 2025, that means theres a good chance danny rics is going to red bull. do you SEE how the plot here is THICKENED
yuki tsunoda. age 23. currently at alpha tauri. and fun fact, the only alpha tauri driver to race there the whole year. he had three separate team mates. he is slaying and hes often slept on. he has a bit of a temper and likes to shout on the radio and also hates working out (they had to force him to move to italy or something to work out, long story) but hes been kinda killing it. he led several laps in the abu dhabi race this year and hes decently consistent. people think theres possibility that he could get moved up to red bull on account of the fact that he is younger than daniel and clearly has more years in him,, but there is also possibility that he might not because red bull like to make stupid decisions. and if he doesnt get moved up to rebel, will he stay with alpha tauri? we don't know.
alex albon. age 27. currently a williams driver. alex albon is another one with a batshit career. he started out his rookie year in 2019 at alpha tauri then got moved up to red bull halfway through the year when red bull decided that pierre gasley wasnt doing a good enough job (more on him later) and stayed with red bull for a solid year and a half until he lost his seat in 2021 to checo. he has been with williams for the last two years and is basically carrying the team. like. williams as a team scored 28 points this year. and alex albon scored 27 of those 28 points. and as we know, williams is still kind of in their shit arc (though they are doing much better. they didnt score any points for a solid 2 (?) years. so this is an improvement.) and if you can get a shit car to perform you catch the eye of bigger teams. now, alex has already been a red bull driver. and he was on the cusp of podiuming two separate times when lewis hamilton ran into him. this (among a few other things) basically killed his chances at getting resigned at red bull because he wasnt ""performing"" and red bull are bitches who love to win. but some people think that red bull should give him another shot. like daniel, hes already been max's teammate and he can definitely drive. but theres also talk he might go to ferrari because ferrari think that he might compliment charles's driving style (or something). but going to ferrari at this point is kind of suicide. so.
logan sergeant. age 23. the only american on the grid. the other williams driver. he just finished his rookie year. he scored a grand total of one single point this season, in texas, and it was because charles leclerc and lewis hamilton both got disqualified because the floor of their car had more wear (by literally less than millimeters) than it was allowed to, bumping him up from 12th to 10th. he has never done better than alex albon. he was also the very last driver to get a contract for 2024, with williams waiting until i think december of 2023 to announce his contract extension. clearly, hes on thin ice. but people have also said that he needs time to get used to formula 1 (other people have pointed out that oscar piastri slayed his rookie season this year and this statement about needing time is largely false). where logan ends up next year though will largely depend on how well the 2024 season goes for him.
fernando alonso. 42 years old. many people like to point out that oscar piastri is actually younger than fernando's racing career. he won tiktok creator of the year (somehow) and is also a 2 time world champion. he retired a few years ago, just to show back up again and slay. during the first half of the season when aston martin had a zoom zoom car he killed it, and then they had problems on top of problems and he didnt do well. except for that one race in brazil where he came in third, beating checo by literally .05 seconds. he hasn't really made any hints about retiring a second time and he is kind of carrying aston Martin right now (he scored 205 points this season, coming in 4th and tying in points with charles leclerc, lance stroll only scored 74 points this year.) and they did have their best year yet this year. (though they are relatively new).
pierre gasley. 27 years old. french. drives for alpine. the french team. previously he raced with toro rosso (now alpha tauri), then got promoted to a red bull driver in 2019, then halfway through the season they decided he wasnt doing a good enough job and he got demoted back down to alpha tauri. then he won a race with alpha tauri just to stick it to red bull. after the great oscar piastri contract twitter war, he was signed as alpines second driver, with Esteban ocon being the other driver (more on him soon). estie bestie and pierre (both french) were childhood friends and now hate each other for unknown reasons and basically feuded on the track for most of the season. french civil war at alpine. he scored 62 points in 2023 and came in 11th. not really sure where he will end up, it is possible that he will stick it out at alpine.
esteban ocon. 27 years old. also french. currently driving for alpine. another one with a silly bonkers career. he started out at force india and had a baller few seasons there but his teammate at the time was checo, and checo didnt really cooperate with him too much and caused some drama that cost estie bestie some places and some points. max verstappen also beat him up in the garage once. thats not really relevant but it did happen. anyway, after the owner of force india was arrested for .... i don't remember what maybe it was embezzlement or bankruptcy or something money related, the team was backed by lawrence stroll and became racing point. but all of that happened mid season and lawrence was basically like look ill back you guys for now but next year my son gets a seat (lance) so one of you two (checo and estie bestie) have to go. and ultimately they let estie bestie go even though he was more consistent because checo had more sponsors and they needed money. so he was out of formula 1 for a few years (but was a merc reserve driver) and then went to Renault, which then became alpine. he did come in 12th though overall this season, just behind pierre. so. will alpine keep both him and pierre and keep the civil war going? whos to say.
nico hulkenberg. 36 years old. haas driver. in his 200+ f1 races he has never been on the podium and he really really wants to be on the podium. unfortunately this will never happen in a haas because haas fucking sucks. and everyone knows it. he is getting towards the end of his career though. though! stake f1 will become the mario Andretti and audi team in 2026 (don't question it) and they have supposedly voiced interest in nico. so we will see if he hangs on that long to end up at audi. for now tough, hes definitely hating it at haas. though, haas are going to have a different team principle next year so maybe that will change things. i have a sneaky feeling through that haas will probably end up with another 2 rookie drivers because everyone else is smart enough to not race for them.
kevin magnussen. 31 years old. haas driver. hes another deeply interesting character. he has had one podium. in his rookie season. in his first race. and none since. kevin started at haas in 2017 and then left at then end of 2020 when he basically got kicked off because the team needed money and they wanted to bring in drivers with more sponsorships. these drivers were mick schumacher and nikita mazepin. so kevin basically was forced to retire after the 2020 season. this went decently well for haas. until russia invaded ukraine right before the start of the 2022 season and, well, nikita was Russian and it was never distinctly proven that his dads company (who was sponsoring the team) wasnt also funding the invasion. so nikita got fired and they were literally like 2 weeks out from the start of the season, down a driver. who are you gonna call? kevin magnussen! and hes been back ever since. but hes clearly getting annoyed with haas. there was one great clip from this year where his car caught on fire and he kind of just stared into to, clearly hoping it would burn for a long time. so the likelihood of him extending his contract is looking slim.
valtteri bottas. 34 years old. currently a driver for stake f1 (alpha romeo, kick sauber, whatever you wanna call it). previously, he was a mercedes driver and notoriously helped lewis hamilton win a great many championships, until he lost his seat to george russell in 2022. there was a rather awkward part of the 2021 season where valtteri knew that he was out of a merc seat the following year and kind of just chose violence. he slayed. then he went to alpha romeo, grew a mullet and made a calendar of his ass. quite the glow up if you ask me. hes also very interested in cycling. honestly though, i have my own personal speculation that hes going to retire at the end of this year.
zhou guanyu. 24 years old. driver for stake f1 (alpha romeo/kick sauber, etc etc). hes doing alright. he just finished his second season, in his first season he was majorly out qualified by valtteri but this past season he managed to out qualify him a good 6 times. which is decently good for the tractor of a car hes driving. its possible that he could get a contract extension, but like logan, its probably going to depend on how the 2024 season goes for him.
and thats all the drivers. theres also a few others i didnt talk about, like some other f2 drivers who want seats and mick schumacher, who is currently a merc reserve driver, all of which could be contenders for f1 seats. but one things for sure. this is going to be the silliest fucking silly season.
feel free to add on and peer review me

she's the man * vr dts special
what does netflix have to say about the first and only woman to make it on the grid in almost 2 decades?
warnings: danica patrick jumpscares
notes: hi im procrastinating my assignment that's due tomorrow so i'm making this for you guys <3 and this is so...? poorly written is what i'm trying to say bye
Tumblr media
[will buxton] there is a new team on the grid: andretti's appeal to be the 11th team on the grid was approved early last year. there was a lot of talk about who they could hire in their driver lineup. nobody expected sebastian vettel, who literally just retired from being an f1 driver, to be stepping into the shoes of a race engineer. and to take a chance on a rookie driver...
what did you want me to say? she looks down at the clapperboard that's been handed over to her, lifting it up and down as she tries to ease her nervousness. [producer] introduce yourself first and we'll take it step by step from here. she nods and presses her lips together with a smile. hi. i'm driving for andretti racing for the 2023 season and i am the first female on the grid in almost 20 years.
[sebastian vettel] i... you know, i realised i have nothing to do if i don't race. so i took up the job with one exception – they allow a rookie into the team.
-> bahrain, 2023
she smiles, tapping her card onto the reader. she just waves at the crew ahead of her, cameras held up and lenses pointed directly at her as she walks alongside logan and oscar.
i'm a little nervous, of course – i didn't think i'd get this far. in all honestly, i thought f2 was the furthest i'd get when it came to racing. but i'm lucky. sebastian is taking a big gamble putting me in an f1 car this year.
[danica patrick] a woman in f1? i don't expect that will go well overall. does she even have the aggressiveness to be driving alongside these men who, for them, things like these come naturally.
-> abu dhabi, 2022
"well, would you look at that? the sole woman on the grid has made it to the podium. and that would," there's a pause from crofty, taking a deep breath as a smile spreads his lips, "award her as a runner-up in the drivers' championship slightly ahead of liam lawson. she's driven amazing all year round and it's just a wonder if she will ever make it further than formula 2 if she can produce these results at this level of racing."
[susie wolff] she's amazing behind the wheel. toto and i have watched a couple of her races over the years. it's an experience to have her around every weekend beside big household names like lewis hamilton and max verstappen. if her team can give her a good enough car to produce massive results, or she outperforms everyone's expectations this year, it could be very telling for the sport. and it sure opens a lot of opportunities for new generations of racers to come.
[sebastian vettel] well, she produces the results you'd want in a race car driver. i'd like to change the course of things around here, so there was no question that i'd vouch for her to get in a car with the best of the best. she's been in an f1 car before – with haas a while ago – so there's really not much worry about how she'll do this year. she just needs a good car to start.
[claire williams] nothing wrong with taking a chance on a rookie. but as a new team in the sport, you'd want to prove to everyone that you fought rightfully so for your spot as a new addition to the pitlane.
-> bahrain, 2023
she stands at the back of the garage. the camera zooms into the girl toying with the neckline of her fireproofs. she presses her lips together as sebastian talks to her. "so you're starting p18 tomorrow."
"oh." she looks down at the ground and purses her lips together. "well i told you: the car still felt a little difficult in the braking zones earlier. that was the best i could do without burying myself into a barrier."
"yeah, of course. that just means you'll have to work a little extra tomorrow during the race," sebastian grins. he places his hand on her shoulder to shake her gently. "you did your best today. don't even worry about it. you'll come back stronger tomorrow."
"of course. i didn't get this far just to fumble the bag at my first race."
[danica patrick] qualifying p18 as a rookie and as the sole woman in the sport... it's not a good look for either herself or the people who decided to take a chance on her.
"and that's the checkered flag. p11," sebastian says into her ears.
she sighs as she slows the car down for a cool-down lap. she lets out an exasperated sigh, shaking her head. "i could have pushed a little more to get better results. i'm sorry."
"ah, you finished ahead of a lot of people and you climbed 7 places on the track. it's a good first race."
[will buxton] right now, it seems that not everyone is fond of having a woman on the grid. that's very prominent in the fan side of things. but a lot of people are forgetting that she raced with some of the big names that people know today and was on par with them in the results growing up.
[oscar piastri] well, we go way back. you know, growing up karting together and constantly being in competition with one another, i think really encouraged her to stay in the sport. when we moved up to f3 from formula renault, she kinda got left behind to stay. so when i was poached by prema to race into f2, i suggested that they give her a chance.
well, i was up there fighting with oscar and logan, and occasionally liam, for good results during karting races and eventually in formula renault. the only disadvantage i had compared to them was that i'm a girl. you know, growing up, i would constantly be told that i wouldn't get very far cause this is a boy's sport. that really does discourage you from wanting and thinking that i'd get into official leagues, but i owe it to my best friends for pushing me to dream bigger and retain the passion i had for racing.
[logan sargeant] i mean... she kinda did hand me my ass every single time we were out on the track. if that doesn't tell people that she's a good racer, i'm unsure what will.
[zak brown] it was, truthfully, down to her and oscar for who should come in and drive for mclaren. but we weren't sure if the risks to bring her in would be worth it. so we went with the safer option.
[james vowles] i know a couple different teams – i'm definitely not namedropping – who were eyeing her for her performance last year. prema did a very good job marketing her as their driver as well so there's an extra factor. she's lovely.
-> australia, 2023
"oh, andretti's rookie passes the flag ahead of the alpha tauri and puts her in the points!" there's cheering in the grandstands, and nobody can believe their eyes at the results of the purple race car. "you see it here first – she is the first woman, in decades, to score points to formula 1"
"that's p9! there's your first points in formula 1!"
"oh? oh my fucking god! i did it!"
scoring your first points as a formula 1 driver... it's a very big feat as a rookie. but it means even more when you're in my position.
she runs to where sebastian stands, helmet in her hands. she screams as her team erupts in cheers at the sight of her sprinting towards them and she pumps her fists into the air.
"i did it!" she screams, immediately surrounded by the personnel clad in the bright andretti purple. "i scored my first points!"
she's seen in the middle of their makeshift circle, thrown around by her team as they bask in their first achievement in the sport and of the year. she's seen with tears running down her cheeks briefly before sebastian pulls her in for a very tight hug.
"i told you everything will be fine. you just had to be patient, kid."
[sebastian vettel] scoring points alone is already a step in the right direction. now we just need to focus on being consistent race after race.
-> azerbaijan, 2023
"there's a yellow flag here in lap 40. we're waiting to hear who it was caused by," the camera pans to the car head first into the barriers at a turn, "and it seems to be an andretti."
when you crash front first out of a turn, it's like the rudest jumpscare a person could have. it's nothing to do with the car – it was straight up a driver error.
[sebastian vettel] no driver wants to crash their car during a race and then admit to the whole world that it was their fault. especially when you're in her position, you know? the statement she released and choosing to be honest about it being a driver error – it was her decision to handle it that way. personally... he giggles with a smile. i wouldn't have done that.
[will buxton] she only seems to be getting better and better every single weekend.
-> monaco, 2023
"that's another finish in the points, kid. good race. that's p5 for you."
"thank you. the car felt great this weekend."
-> singapore, 2023
"here we have the andretti rookie in her engineer and mentor's arms, on a very historical evening. she has just scored her first podium this weekend at the singapore grand prix."
she jumps as she's in sebastian's arms, her face buried in his chest. she is seen pulling away slightly from him and he grabs her face, "amazing– you were amazing, kid! congratulations!"
tears, again, roll down her cheeks as she nods at his statement. her chest heaves as she cries. "thank you. oh, my goodness. thank you."
"there's no words. just that you were amazing this weekend."
a hand lands on her back. she turns around and covers her face as she fights the biggest grin. "you beat me in f1, mate!"
the australian accent fills her ears as he congratulates her. oscar takes her into his arms, resting his chin on her shoulder as they lock themselves in a tight embrace. he rubs circles on her back. "congrats on the podium, mate."
[danica patrick] now they're in a weird spot. oscar, on one hand, has been backed by mark webber for years. his best friend is racing under sebastian vettel. everybody knows those two don't get along – is it possible that it could reflect on their friendship as well?
-> silverstone, 2023
"overtake available." her andretti, slowly inches towards the mclaren of oscar's up ahead. "whenever you see fit."
"what's the gap?" oscar huffs, head snapping over to his side mirror briefly.
"0.2."
at the next turn, she takes a big lunge on the inside of the track to go ahead of oscar.
"there's a bit of fighting at the midfield here between a mclaren and an andretti. oscar piastri, however, does not let her go. he is still fighting to hopefully finish ahead of her in today's race."
"keep the pace. try to shake oscar off, he's still close behind you."
"noted."
racing on the track with oscar? nothing i haven't done before.
[oscar piastri] she's always been great at keeping up and being a challenging competitor on the track.
[logan sargeant] she's very fast on and off the track. i rarely beat her in racing... so...
"oscar piastri takes the checkered flag behind the andretti, failing to fight with the incredible pace the new car has shown this weekend."
in parc ferme, the girl takes her helmet off, turning around sharply to the man in papaya orange as he lifts himself out of the car. "good fight, mate."
"good fight," oscar smiles. they share a quick hug before the younger girl briefly runs away from him to approach logan further down the lane.
[danica patrick] we've seen what the sport does to friends. it does not matter how long you've been friends – it will eventually catch up to you and everybody involved.
-> austin, 2023
"the andretti finished in p5 and logan sargeant has just been promoted to p10 following the disqualification of charles leclerc and lewis hamilton. oscar, however, retires from the race following a crash with esteban ocon."
i don't beat oscar often – so whenever the rarity comes up, i take it with open arms.
"ah, screw you mate," oscar laughs, throwing his arms around the younger girl once again. "good finish."
she flips her hair as she pulls away and bats her eyelashes. "what can i say? i'm made for formula 1."
[sebastian vettel] they're sweet kids. i don't think there is any animosity between them. they lived together while they karted weekend after weekend. they're used to it... i think.
we've fought about things like these growing up. oh, for sure. we're both the oldest siblings – so the competition never ends between us.
[oscar piastri] she is very competitive. she's only fair when it comes to racing on the track though. everything else, she finds a way to come out on top.
-> oxford, 2023 (winter break)
"i won."
logan turns to look at her, eyebrows furrowed. "no, you didn't."
now stood up, the girl looked down at logan with a mirrored bewildered expression on her face. "yes, i did."
"no," logan repeats with his eyebrows raised, "you did not."
she clenches her jaw. "yes, i did."
"dude." logan turns to look at oscar, sitting across the table from them. their gazes all land on the card that she puts in the middle. "that's a yellow card that you coloured over with red marker. you lost – just admit it."
"what do you mean? that's a legit card." she lifts it up and reveals to the camera a card that's been poorly coloured red with some scratches that reveal the authenticity of the yellow that logan had just pointed out.
[logan sargeant] she's such a sore loser.
-> abu dhabi, 2023
"that's the andretti of the rookie driver crossing the finish line in p4, and that puts her in 6th place in the driver's championship. we might just be at the start of history being made, folks."
[sebastian vettel] what can i say? i'm never wrong with who i place my bets on.
[danica patrick] she proved a lot of people wrong this year, including me. she is an exciting up and coming driver.
she shrugs with a smug grin on her face. oh, i'm here to stay, babes.
andretti has secured her with a multi-year contract with the team – she will be racing under them until 2028.
the clapperboard clicks loudly, a man sits there with a cheeky grin as he stares into the camera. i'm liam lawson and i'm now an andretti race car driver. see you on the track in 2024.
– bonus
"aw, mate! they totally twisted that whole scene up!" she scoffs, throwing a small pillow at the tv screen. "dalton was the one that coloured that uno card in. not me!"
oscar turns to her. "yet you still used it despite the fact that we agreed to not use it in games anymore."
"the game would not have been fair if we were missing one card!"
logan scoffs. "we let you win, anyway."

“we made such a mess didn’t we?” with oscar please for oscar weekend 🤭
send in requests (sfw & nsfw) for oscar weekend
warnings: !! CONTAINS SMUT, MINORS DNI !! unprotected p in v
All you can see is him. Even with the loud cheers, and the clips of Max and Red Bull flashing over the large screens, you can only focus on Oscar.
Oscar, who had just won his first ever race in F1. He grins as he tugs his balaclava off his head and runs a hand through his hair. He gives you a grin that has you leaping into his arms.
“You did it! You did it Os!” You say into his neck.
His arms wrap tight around your waist. “It was only a sprint darling.”
You pull back and hold his face in your hands. “I don’t care. You won.” You pull him down into a kiss. “I’m so proud of you.” You tell him when you pull away.
He’s pulled away from you quickly after that to do his media duties. You walk back to his driver’s room to wait for him.
You close the door behind you and take a seat on the small bed. Scrolling through your phone you can already see posts about the sprint race, a few about Max securing his third world championship, but most about Oscar’s win. You smile as you scroll through them, even catching a few photos of your post-race kiss with the McLaren driver.
He comes back to his driver’s room not long after. He’s got his race suit on his hips, his black fireproofs hugging his chest and arms deliciously. His hair is a tousled mess, most likely from the amount of times he’s run his hands through it. He gives you a smile, clearly still high off his win as he begins to gather his clothes.
You stand up and walk over to him, wrapping your arms around his waist, and standing up on your tiptoes to place a kiss on the back of his neck.
“You were amazing today Os.”
He turns around in your arms and wraps his own around you. “Thank you darling.”
The kiss you pull him down into starts off soft and sweet but quickly heats up. You tug on his race suit, desperate to pull him closer to you. He backs you up until you’re sitting on the bed again, with him leaning down to keep his lips connected to yours.
His hands tug on your pants, trying to pull them down off of you, while yours do the same to his race suit and his fireproofs.
“Are you sure?” He asks you, casting a glance to the door. He lets out a surprised moan when he feels your hand wrap around his cock and start stroking it.
“I’m sure.”
He pushes into you, still standing at the foot of the bed, with his arms holding onto your legs. You try to keep your noises quiet, holding your arm over your mouth and biting down on it. Oscar’s head falls back as he bites his lips, attempting to do the same.
It would be chaos if anyone were to find out what was happening. Oscar Piastri, McLaren rookie, known for being polite and sensible, fucking his girlfriend with her ankles on his shoulders in his driver’s room.
You feel Oscar’s hips begin to stutter, he reaches a hand down to rub against your clit. You both try your best to hold in your sounds, ending in you whining into your arm and Oscar groaning with clenched teeth.
You’re both panting when he pulls out. He gently moves your legs back down to the bed, huffing out a laugh when he looks at you dripping onto the bed.
“We made such a mess, didn’t we?” He asks, glancing down at the white ring around the base of his cock.
You sit up, feeling the stickiness between your legs and quickly stand up.
Oscar wraps an arm around your waist as your legs wobble slightly under you. A look of terror flashes across your face as you look at the bed. A spot of your mixed releases lays on the bed, letting you know exactly what had been done in here.
“Os, we have to clean that up! Someone might see it!”
“We were celebrating my win darling, what could they expect us to do?” He smirks, kissing the top of your head.

Hi! Just wanted to say I love your x blind! reader pieces as a fellow visually impaired F1 fan! It makes me feel so seen. I would love to see more with any driver, but it would be cool to see more of Max or Charles with the blind sister. :)
Saftey Hazard
Oscar Piastri x Verstappen Reader
Genre: fluuuuufffff
Summary: Max volunteers a car to teach his sister how to drive. But Oscar is the one giving the lesson.
Warnings: dont try this at home? I definitely would.
Notes: reminder the blindness is a spectrum! Everybody is different!!
Masterlist
Tumblr media
One thing about being blind is the lack of driving. It's like having an aspect of freedom ripped away. Something that other kids get to do while you're stuck being driven everywhere. The feeling of burdening other people with the constant need always exhausting.
Unless your name name is Max Verstappen. His sisters chauffer. He drives her everywhere she wants to go without hesitation or question.
In return, she comes to all his races, diligently uses her cane (even when she hates it) and listens for all the gossip. Her ears are amazing, and Max likes to use it to his advantage.
Then along came Oscar. It was inevitable that they would meet because he is Lando's teammate and Lando is Max's best friend. Similarly, her and the Brit are in cahoots to make Max fess up to Charles. There is a betting pool and everything.
She met Oscar while out clubbing. An activity that usually led to either Lando or Max going home not sober. Tonight, they would both be intoxicated because Oscar had offered himself up as the designated driver.
Sober conversations in a club with someone is an odd concept to her, considering the world she lives in.
Long story short: Her and Oscar got together before Max and Charles (much to Lando's dismay as he now owes her money).
Now, Max had been very clear that it is unsafe for her to drive. Which is true, considering she can't see much of the road let alone the cars around her. However, if the case arose where she could drive around an open track then he would provide a car if necessary.
She manages to crack Christian into making it a media thing. Perfect for the Press, give them something to chew on for a while maybe. If being a sacrificial lamb to the internet is what lets her drive, then so be it.
They do it in Austria around the Red Bull Ring. Max deemed this the best spot because of the long straight.
Even better: They've managed to convince McLaren to let their drivers join them for the occasion. Mostly because Max didn't want to be in a car with her driving, so Lando offered to teach then torcher his rookie teammate by letting his blind girlfriend drive as fast as the car will let her around the track.
Lessons go well. She's a quick study, and Lando, despite his chaotic nature, is a good teacher. Of course, it helps that she's driving an automatic, but she has a led foot like Max and wants to go as fast as possible.
After an hour, Lando gets out of the car. He's laughing like a maniac because he has no idea how well this is going to go. She may be driving an average car, but it certainly doesn't feel like it is with someone who can't see behind the wheel.
Oscar slides into the passenger seat and peers over at the female. She's vibrating with excitement. Despite the helmet, he can see the smile in her eyes.
"I have a feeling you're going to scare me and you're going to love it."
"Do you not trust me?" She feigns. Fake hurt dripping from her tone.
"Not in a car, no."
"I feel so loved."
With Oscar secured in the vehicle, she slams the gas pedal. Oscar doesn't make any noise if he's startled.
Actually, he barely makes noise at all. Aside from casually commenting every now and then on how she takes a turn. Sometimes, he makes her laugh with his commentary and usual deadpan humor.
When they do eventually step out of the the car, Oscar looks smitten. Heart eyes at his lover while they discuss how she did.
"I think I could race."
"Absolutely not. I'm not letting you anywhere near a supercar, let alone a formula one car." Oscar gives her a very serious look.
"You didn't seem scared at all!"
"Oh, that was terrifying, but I thought if I showed you I was scared, it might freak you out." He explains. Her mouth drops open in Suprise.
"I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or an insult."
"How about we say, 'I love you' instead and be grateful everyone involved is uninjured."

I think someone here missed the sight of a soaked Oscar <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok so big shock!! I'm gonna use this sweet little morsel of Lando pausing in his remaining winter break to look back on that glorious day
to create an absolute smorgasbord of what Suzuka meant to him and to Oscar
I've edited together the most chewable parts of the post race press conference tho tbh it's mostly just removing the parts where Max tries his best to put a slight new twist on answering the exact same questions as last weekend lgflajsg.
so at the start I love the little private smile Lando and Oscar share when Max's fanfare is going on - it gives me a little rueful but also slightly creepy twinning vestal virgins au like are we going to destroy him Lando? yes we are going to destroy him Oscar
(I AM NOT BEING SERIOUS IT'S JUST JOKES).
which is even funnier with what Max leads into about seeing these two goddamn McLarens sandwiching him and for a split second thinking ah so they want to destroy me? oh dear. like Max is very at home on that couch but the presence of these two creatures sharing covert smiles with each other has him (and probably a lot of that room) uneasily wondering if that's all y'know, normal and above board? they're not like... witches, right? haha. crazy!
and I think the cool meticulous way Lando treats his own performance is a really good example of how (in my opinion!) his self-flagellation does need to be reeled in because he's never the sort to be soaring high enough to compensate for those lowest lows. for a while I was undecided but honestly I agree with Martin Brundle, Jenson Button and Oscar who've said (in different ways and indirectly from Oscar) that Lando is far too level-headed and race smart to be hanging his own tender hide out like he does. I so appreciate how measured he was in self-approval over his back to back podiums and no one's asking him to get cocky, but I'd really love to see him match this approach to when he struggles as a driver (and not just a car issue which was the case pre Silverstone).
contrast that with Oscar discussing his own self-criticisms of the weekend but equally saying he'll still relish the maiden podium. and crucially that he can fairly put at least part of his struggles - which he was also meticulous about - down to this being his first time racing at Suzuka. an anon sent an ask about Andrea praising Oscar specifically for his performance there and you can really feel the influence Andrea has had throughout the season on Oscar. because before Silverstone, Oscar had a tendency to monotone lowness and disappointment in himself that bordered dangerously on bitterness and maybe even a fear/doubt of how his rookie season would indeed turn out? but Andrea's approach of optimism, faith in teamwork and specifically in making sure Oscar was looked after while Lando naturally performed so much better, absolutely sank in.
and it makes sense that Oscar as a rookie has so much more mental plasticity when it comes to outside influence - and says a lot about Andrea's leadership too. it's where I wish Lando could have had Andrea as principal from day one too. bc understandably, Lando has graduated to that level of knowing himself so well as a driver relative the drivers around him that there's an existing almost prejudice about himself that the people in charge of guiding him have to overcome.
literally everyone who knows and who matters has said how similar Lando and Oscar are in terms of their approach to the car and their dedication to the team. and I know Andrea has shielded Lando in his own way by saying that it's a champion's mentality to have as much passion and emotion as Lando does. but - and this is honestly such a great piece about Andrea go read it and thank you again to @mecachrome for repping him so much - he also emphasized the positivity that was so crucial to pushing the team through those awful early races. I don't at all blame Lando for getting a bit grim toward himself at times thinking not only about that first race win but also the championship. but I also really hope that between Andrea and Oscar (source: Lando himself!) he can use the lifts of his highs to not sink so low anymore.
skipping back to around the minute mark when Lando says how much more this second place means to him than Singapore because of the double podium and also because of his own performance being better. not to get too ~contentious~ but this is why I really have needed the Singapore high to wear off as fast as it did for Lando when people are discussing Lando's 2023 as a driver and not as part of a ship. absolutely still revel in it in an rpf sense! but like, real life Lando is intensely loyal to his team and y'know what else? he's intensely loyal to loyalty. which is precisely what Oscar has been proving to McLaren since signing that pre-contract the summer before. it took an entire court case for Oscar to get to McLaren and he was met with a wall of hate coming from three sides. comment sections were filled with people celebrating McLaren's 2023 initial struggles and vilifying Oscar for how much he was costing them (in every sense) for paying out Daniel. and it was the Suzuka weekend when Oscar agreed immediately to extend his contract further.
Lando had a front row seat for all of that once the season started. and considering how few races Oscar's dad and Lily were able to make due to being on the other side of the world and final year of school respectively, Oscar spent a fair amount of that time getting to grips with being in F1, and the particular pressure and stress from media and fans, largely alone in terms of a private life. so it says so much about how well he was repaid by the team and also by Lando for keeping his cool and putting in the extra hours and keeping the faith.
and around 2 mins "we have two drivers up fighting for those positions" "we can help one another and use one another". that tandem the two of them have achieved before the season is even over was largely formed when the car was fighting against them. as was the case with Carlos and then Daniel and truly every other F1 driver, Lando did NOT have to intervene or take on a specific responsibility toward Oscar. F1 drivers aren't pack animals, they move through their careers alone and are happy if they can be buddies with their partner. so to see Lando as the number one show faith in Oscar and stand up for him and receive that trust and faith in return is so unique. Lando controlled that as much as Andrea did - maybe even more considering how he says he feels Oscar is so similar to him in a lot of ways. it's not uncommon for charismatic guys like Lando, Carlos and Daniel to make friends with their team mate.
but I think the whole "Lando effect" thing has actually been a huge disservice to what Lando has put into the partnership with Oscar. in this interview early on in the season, he says how Oscar is really quiet and that it's just how most people are in their first year and "we'll change him". but as we've seen, Oscar didn't end up changing and funnily enough the hanging out he and Lando do off the track has been as private and only alluded to as the rest of Oscar's private life. Lando got a lot of Oscar on his camera (again, a lot we haven't gotten to see yet) but really there was no big transformation in terms of Oscar becoming one of the charismatic personalities of the grid. and yet he and Lando only got closer and more supportive of each other in all the ways that matter to a partnership. so I think it's a much bigger credit to Lando that he learned to understand Oscar's personality better and still found ways to establish that sense of trust and loyalty without a bromance or a bunch of common interests to act as glue.
when they do that slightly eerie, intense active listening when the other is speaking, it's them having a synchronicity that has nothing to do with how guys usually bond. (that's why my vestal virgins au yes I know it's weird)
Lando wasn't in any position of power for any of that to be relevant with Carlos or Daniel - Carlos was so far advanced already in his career and Daniel had his thing going on w McLaren that Lando had no control over (and rightly didn't respond to people demanding he show some kind of shame?? or partake in the blame). so loyalty never really played a part in his partnerships with those two, whereas (and maybe as a result of that) Lando's loyalty to McLaren as a team only grew each season. so seeing someone close to his own age but far behind in experience, work so hard and prove so early on that he wants to stay, absolutely brought out a pride from Lando for Oscar that I really hope he will also extend to himself more. major Zak Brown levels of back pats to Lando.
and side note but it needs to no longer be a question or point of contention when Lando says that Silverstone and then the double podiums are superior races for him. Lando loves his F1 buddies, absolutely. but Lando didn't burn through junior championships by favoring his buddies. he loves racing and his team more. and he sure didn't get that second place podium in Singapore because of a buddy, it was because of the position he'd put himself in. just like how Carlos would have given DRS to anyone behind him who was on older tires like he was to ensure that win. like, let's remember the manic obsession that has brought these men to where they are. buddies are a part-time thing. rpf is my meat and drink but I'll never confuse it up with that reality lol.
4:45 the Senna-Prost comparison - and I could probably get all deep about the youngest generation referring to those old bitter alpha male rivalries as something long gone (but I won't). but it's a really good call-back to Monza and the coming together because there's Oscar's ability to see his performance clearly and where it went wrong for him leading to that third place and not higher. and god, I am in no way saying that it's possible to compare Lando being in his fifth season without a race win to a rookie celebrating his first podium. I just really hope that Lando reminds himself that he's come of age in F1 in the Max Verstappen era and that in the cool down room at Qatar, Oscar giddily thanked Mercedes for clearing a path for him. that it doesn't always have to be pure perfection and pace to keep him afloat. sometimes points are points and serendipity plays her part.
"I've been drowned by Lando in champagne" god I will never be over Lando's smug toothy smile
and I will also never be over the way Lando went from clearly dreading being the "older/experienced" teammate and not knowing what to make of Oscar's quiet, reserved personality, to the intense proprietary authority of practically holding Oscar up by his collar like a prize cat in Suzuka and saying "this is mine! I helped make this what it is! look how good this is!"
all while baptizing him in champagne <3

okay this more for the nights where you just wanna write something soft but i’m thinking just mainly d/sAU more specifically sub!Oscar or sub!Logan just having had a bad race or a bad day and instead of having a scene that day you guys just cuddle and let them just squeeze and suckle on your boobs because it calms them down and makes them feel better? i don’t know just kinda a soft thought to help with my current university stress. have a good day!
sincerely,
🔙🦴anon
This is so soft and so sweet I love it. So actually I think I'm gonna write a little for sub!Logan and a little for sub!Oscar since they're both so cute and I've missed the D/S AU so much!!
OSCAR:
So we've established that both Lando and Oscar are subs, meaning as their team dom you would have to balance both of their needs. You often end up doing scenes with them together or letting them both come over to your hotel room for some relaxed cuddling or kneeling.
But when Oscar is upset, specifically over a bad race, I think what he really needs is to be alone with you? He needs all of your attention on him, needs to not have Lando anywhere near.
When he feels like he's not good enough and like he's really fucked up, he just needs you to treat him so softly and know you would never compare him to anyone else. Lando is always understanding, promising to be a good boy on his own and then leaving you so that you can give Oscar your full attention.
I don't think he wants to talk about it, more just wants to be held and be allowed to suckle on you a little to calm down. Often he'll have a little cry, and you just hold him through it.
Once he's had his breakdown, you get him cleaned up, showering with him so that he feels all nice and clean and then giving him even more cuddles.
LOGAN:
With Logan, I think it's all about giving him a safe space to express his feelings? He knows how privileged he is to be in his position and he knows many think he isnt performing up to scratch so he is very much aware of the fact that he really shouldn't be complaining about his position and his performance.
But he needs to, he needs to vent and complain and have someone listen to him. Not for someone to offer advice or instructions or judgment, just simply to listen.
And I think at first just letting him kneel might be the best way to do that? You always wait until you get back to the hotel, because he isnt comfortable talking candidly like while still in the Williams garage.
So you get back to the hotel and you let him kneel immediately, it has to happen immediately. You don't even let him get changed first because he can't carry that weight around for the rest of evening he has to let it go now.
So he kneels for you and he talks. He's not always kind to himself, but you don't say a thing, just pet his hair and let him air out his frustrations. You take note of what he's saying of course, thinking of what you will say to him later on in the evening. But for now you just let him speak.
With Logan, you can't just stop his self deprecating thoughts when he speaks them, you have to actually let him say whatever he's feeling otherwise he'll bottle it up and never address it.
Once he's talked himself hoarse, then it's time for a nice bath where you praise him for being so brave and opening up to you.
Only once he's all clean and comfy in bed, cuddled against your chest, do you start to tell him what you think. You always tell him he's too hard on himself and remind him off all he's achieved, remind him that he's still a rookie and that he has so much time.
It's then that he'll sometimes slip his head under your shirt to suckle on you a little, allowing your words to wash over him as he slowly comes down and lets himself be comforted.

Wait actually, Logan rookie agent and Alex veteran agent.
CW: Violence in gen. Think Mission Impossible
Logan goes on a mission for the first time and it goes so horribly wrong, he's benched and is demoted to desk duty. It's like "I almost killed my partner" bad. Then a few months goes by and he gets notice that he's finally been put out of his guilt and misery and he's going to go on a mission in a week's time. The problem though? He's going to get a new partner which is none other than Agent Alex Albon. Infamous for rising up to the top when nobody was expecting it, he's skilled in 3 different martial arts, a marksman and helped take down a notorious gang in his rookie year. So yea, no biggy. It's fine when they meet, Alex's funny but he's really, really sarcastic so sometimes Logan doesn't know if he's actually being serious or not and just awkwardly stammers out a laugh. Their dynamics is quite confusing to the other agents. Even so, Logan is not complaining at all. Anything to get him out of desk duty and truthfully, he doesn't really mind you know, working with Alex. Alex is nice. Really nice to look at to work with. When they do finally go on the mission, Logan assumed this would be an easy one. Just some plain ol' recon, still dangerous if you slip-up but not too life-threatening. And it was, that is until they saw something they shouldn't have seen and now their agency is getting threatened. But why should the agency care? They're called a secret impregnable fort for a reason, right? Wrong. The bad guys break into the agency guns blazing and overall 0/10 would not try again. There weren't any casualties, just a few minor injuries. The agency doesn't employ some of the most talented agents for no reason. Unless you count Logan getting shot in the arm and kidnapped a major injury. His kidnapper was a few inches shorter than him, had wispy blonde hair coming out of the black balaclava he was wearing and was pretty built. Had kind of a similar accent to Oscar but not. The agency tries to save him, keyword being tries because they did try, they just didn't see this unprecedented situation. Which was Alex moving to JOIN the bad guys??? Apparently he's a double agent which is great hahahaha, not like Logan had barred his soul to him or actually fallen for him or anything.... Yea, so the agency fails to save him because Alex takes out an honest to God syringe and plunges it into Logan's chest, embedding it deep into his body. Last thing Logan remembers before darkness overcomes him is a gunshot ringing but he can't find it himself to see who's hurt, he's ..just...so....tiiireddddd.........
"You're up"
Groaning, Logan rubs his head, trying to cease the throbbing headache he's currently experiencing.
"Would've woken up sooner if you didn't give me such a big dose. Trying to kill me Albon?"
Yea, so maybe Logan's a double agent too...whoopsie. He's just that good of an actor. [Cue my brainrot of actor Logan and driver Oscar or Alex, I'm not picky]
"Nah, I like your face too much to kill you Sarge"
"Right, if you two lovebirds don't mind, we've got work to do."
Logan takes notice of the man off to his left. He has one hand in his pocket and the other sweeping up his blond hair to the side, an exasperated look on his face.
"No wait, let's rewind back to when you literally shot me in the arm. What the fuck?"
"I needed to do it! People would've talked if you had only like one scratch"
"Oh and so you thought hmm a gunshot wound would be the next best choice?"
"Stop complaining man, our work isn't done yet. It's time we move on to phase 2."

could you explain the mclaren reputation era please I missed it
ok well i don't really understand it entirely so bear with me here as i fumble through this.
essentially yesterday mclaren archived (deleted?) every single one of their instagram posts (and there were Thousands) except for this kind of twist trap esque video of lando, oscar and their car with the tagline "whatever it takes" like the imagine dragons song, or perhaps a 15 year old boy posting selfies of himself in the gym.
this of course is exactly what taylor swift did however many years ago right before she dropped her reputation album, archived every single one of her instagram posts except for these three videos of a snake slithering around and i don't remember what the words were associated with it but it was foreshadowing her reputation album. this was the album that she released directly after she got a whole lot of shit for her 1989 tour, took basically 2 years off and came back with some s tier bangers about how basically she didnt really care what the media thought of her, but she was reinventing herself (remember the "im sorry, the old taylor can't come to the phone right now, why? oh! cause she's dead!" meme" but essentially, it was her comeback after awhile away.
mclaren, as we know, has not won a championship since 2008 with sir lewis hamilton. their driver line up, lando norris and oscar piastri, is the youngest pairing of drivers on the grid (lando is 24, oscar is 22) and while the 2023 season for them started off absolutely terribly (their car fucking sucked) they were able to do some major upgrades throughout the season and turned it around by the silverstone race (just under halfway through the year). from silverstone on (13 races total) mclaren finished in the top 3 nine times (with both oscar and lando on the podium at the qatar and japan races) and were consistently in the points. oscar also won the sprint race in qatar. and lando had i think 17 overtakes at the mexico race, starting 19 and ending 5th. which is kind of incredible. in a season of absolute red bull domination (lets remember that a red bull driver won ever race except for the singapore race, which carlos won with the help of lando) they were consistently challenging them and there was one time in texas (i think?) where lando almost was able to overtake max.
so yes, red bull is definitely the favored team at the moment and is coming off of quite possibly the best season they've ever had. however. mclaren have some distinct advantages going into the 2024 season:
they do not have to worry about silly season. as we know, 14 drivers have contracts ending at the end of 2024 which means the absolute mad rush to resign and offer contracts across basically every team. redbull is basically guaranteed to not resign checo and might even swap him for daniel ricciardo halfway through the season whereas lands contract with mclaren ends in 2025 and oscars ends in 2026. mclaren can spend all of their time worrying about the car and the drivers rather than who they are signing.
oscar piastri. oscar just finished his rookie season (and previously won the f2 and f3 championships and won rookie of the year this year). in terms of rookie years he had an outstanding one. people compared him to lewis hamilton's rookie year. as a refresher, lewis hamiltons rookie year was in 2007 (also at mclaren) and he won his first championship in 2008. oscar is the first rookie since lewis hamilton to get multiple podiums and win something in his rookie year. expectations are running high here.
lando norris's expiring contract. as we know lando has one more confirmed year with mclaren. cel of mclaren zak brown has announced that they want to extend landos contract with mclaren, but, hes starting to get really really good, which means that a top team like red bull or mercedes might also try to get him as a driver. this is the year for mclaren to prove to lando that they can give him what he wants (which is to win a race. in his 5 years of formula 1 he hasn't won anything. and once he starts winning then hes going to want to win a championship. but. there is max verstappen to contend with). so their absolute balls to the wall tactic could work pretty well for them here. pre season testing doesnt start for over another month and they are already clearly locked in to the 2024 season.
lando and oscar actually get along. sure, formula 1 is an individual sport, but there is the drivers championship (for the individual driver) and the constructors championship (for the team with the most points). so they do have to work together. drivers not working together in the past has led to some ... undesirable results for teams (the great brocedes civil war of nico rosberg and lewis hamilton that ultimately resulted in nico retiring after he won his first championship, whatever the hell was going with max and daniel for part of the 2018 season, the french civil war at alpine between pierre gasley and esteban ocon) they are also both very consistent drivers. neither are incredibly crash prone and seem quite willing to work together on the track to optimize results.
yes they do also have disadvantages. lando has never won a race, they only have one pole position between them (lando in russia in 2021) and they're not a red bull. clearly they're the underdog in the situation. but they did finish fourth in the constructors championship in 2023 ("best of the rest") (and after basically getting next to no points for the first several races on account of the fact that their car was shit) behind ferrari, mercedes, and red bull. they're coming for the top 3 and honestly it could be their season to lose.
if ferrari doesnt change their strategy approach then they could be out of a shot at top 3. also ferrari have to deal with the nightmare of resigning both of their drivers (or finding new ones). merc and red bull will both be giving it their all (lewis hamilton really really wants to win his 8th world championship before he retires and max is well. max.) but if mclaren has a competitive car from the start of the season and doesnt have to play catch up for the first several races, then they could easily finish in the top 3.
also they released their livery today? which really confuses me (is that different than the car unveiling? what is going on someone mansplain it to me please)

pls explain the oscar being crazy enough in his driving to challenge max properly thing ! curious
I saved this so I could respond properly.
So first, I think Oscar really got a lot of valuable mentorship from Mark Webber that has really helped him shape his approach to F1, team politics etc. We've seen Mark's influence over Oscar's really straightforward no nonsense approach to handling any drama that comes his way (Alpine tweet)
But more than that Mark is probably one of the best mentors out there in terms of coaching how to handle driving against the best. Intimidation is a problem sometimes for drivers, especially rookies or younger drivers when they get to the front of the field. Mark being number 2 to Seb for so many years knows exactly how to handle that kind of pressure and very likely passed on a lot of his insights to Oscar.
Now to Oscar's driving
He has this no fear no intimidation style that makes him way more threatening to the front of the grid in my opinion than his teammate.
I think a few factor's play into this.
I think his no intimidation, very fearless, I don't care who's in front I will try to pass them attitude on track is what sets him apart.
Silverstone 2023 in that first corner is a great example of this(really those first laps when you see how Oscar was pushing Max just waiting for him to make a mistake defending on those turns). He didn't even hesitate diving on the inside of that turn with Max and he almost had it on Max too. That was the moment I went "okay this kid has got that it factor"
We also saw this even in Jeddah 2024 when he was battling for lap after lap with Hamilton. Not letting up at all and not being intimidated by the fact he was technically in the slower car and that he was up against passing a multiple WDC.
We've heard from other drivers in past interviews that they have been intimidated going up against certain people at the top(it's usually Max or Lewis, and I mean fair multiple WDC is intimidating to challenge) but that is not a mentality one can afford on track. You can't be scared of any driver or any car if you want to win.
It's very opportunistic. If you give Oscar even the hint of an opening he will take it. He is very good at seeing openings immediately and jumping on them.
So why is this mentality and style good against Max?
Well Max's style is very very pushy. He just punches through the pack and you better get out of his way because he does not give up space. You can't even have a little bit of intimidation when you go up against him into a corner or you will lose.
Also he makes very few if any mistakes. The opportunities to catch him are very few, Oscar's style of not being willing to back off and jumping on those little openings is very much suited to being able to drive wheel to wheel with Max.
Oscar being so young also has that I am going for it mentality that you usually only see in younger drivers. With his skill and the car he has it has worked out for him beautifully.
Now Oscar has his faults too, and his car is certainly not at a place where it can regularly get him to the front of the field to battle Max. But his whole approach to racing is very much suited to competing at the front of the pack with Max, and there are really only a few other drivers who have the confidence and the skill to do it.

oooo ok poly with lando and oscar
reader and oscar are dating and have been for awhile but kept it private so not many know, the reader is a f1 driver and a rookie with oscar so the grid just thinks there best friends and maybe lando thinks the two are super hot but can’t admit he likes them both, but he doesn’t know the two have been hinting and trying to get him to join them in their relationship and maybe reader oscar and lando are at a club with some drivers and someone is hitting on the reader, pretty badly like trying to touch her and everything so oscar punches him and checks on reader kinda letting the people they went with to the club they are together and maybe lando sees that and realizes he does have feelings for both of them ams bolts outside to try and breath and the two follow him and they get in a relationship
send me lando, oscar, & poly landoscar thots for mclaren night
It would definitely be on “oh shit” moment for Lando. I think he’d maybe not really realize exactly what he felt towards the two of you, but maybe when he see’s someone flirting with you he feels that same protective urge in him that Oscar feels for you, and whilst Oscar is checking up on you he also wants to check up on Oscar, because he just decked a guy in a club. Then it all comes crashing down on Lando all at once.
All of a sudden it’s getting hard to breathe in the club. His chest feels tighter, his lungs feel like they’re closing up. He pushes past groups of people that give him weird looks. When he finally gets outside he leans against a wall and takes a few deep breaths.
He feels awful. How could he have feelings for not only his teammate but his teammate’s girlfriend as well? He feels that pressure in his chest start to build up again, until he feels a hand on his arm.
Oscar is standing there, a concerned look on his face as his eyes dart back and forth between Lando’s. You’re standing with Oscar, an arm wrapped around his bicep.
Lando feels his heart start to calm down as he closes his eyes and starts breathing slowly again.
“Are you okay mate?” Oscar asks once Lando has calmed down.
He nods, but looks down at the ground, not wanting to look up at either of you.
“Lando, are you sure? Do you want us to take you somewhere else?” You offer, now letting go of Oscar to stand on Lando’s other side. When he doesn’t look like he’s got an answer you make a decision for him. “C’mon, lets go back to the hotel. We can have a movie night.” You lace your fingers with his and pull him towards the car you took.
Back at the hotel you all lay down on the bed, Lando between the two of you as you watch whatever movies you can find. You all slowly drift off to sleep and wake up in a mess of limbs. You’re laying against Lando’s chest, who’s got an arm wrapped around Oscar.
It’s then that you and Oscar realize that maybe you enjoy having Lando there with the two of you more than a friend would.

The fact that two rookies are enjoying the luxury that comes with being a world champion is completely ridiculous.
Max loves to spoil them. Mainly because is makes them shy as they try to turn down his offers. He’s stubborn though and usually gives them no other choice but to relent.
Now he’s spoiling them with sleep. They all love sleep. All the time. It’s one of their favorite activities.
Max however, is not sleeping, just resting. His mind moving but his body remains stationary.
Oscar shoots out of the bed faster then Max can register. The Aussie is practically silent as he does it.
The Dutch is quick to follow him. Gently kissing the forehead of the girl still asleep before leaving the room.
Oscar is pacing back and forth, his hands tugging at his hair. He looks to Max as if he’s trying to seem productive and yet not getting anywhere simultaneously.
“Jack?”
He jumps at the sound of Max’s voice. “Sorry, did I wake you?”
“No, I was already awake, just to lazy to move.” Max drags him over to the couch. “Wanna talk about what’s going on in your head?” If there is one thing Max has learned about the Australian, it’s that he’s calm and collected outside and a whirl whine on the inside.
“I just panicked. It’s Tuesday.” He sighs.
A sleepy eyed female walks into the room and drapes herself over them. The two males practically use her as a blanket. “Tuesdays are Alpine meeting days.” Her voice may be sleepy, but the venom in her voice doesn’t go unheard. Max threads his fingers through her hair that is splayed messily across his lap.
"So muscle memory?" Asks the confused Dutch.
Oscar starts fumbling around with his words. "Well - no, it's just that- Alpine weren't the best to me, I guess." His fingers find his hair and run the back if his neck raw.
The confusion turns into concern as Max goes wide-eyed. He knows all the drama that happened. There were countless nights on the phone with Daniel about it. That was Max's first impression of the rookie. The fact he apologized to Daniel for taking his spot and being a hindrance to him.
"He'd gotten in trouble for over sleeping once, and it was absolutely hell. I had half a mind to report them to the FIA." The girl on their lap is flushing with frustration now, her knuckles turning white from her fist tightening around nothing.
Max could see the memories flooding the Australians eyes. He leans over to him and kisses the top of his head. "It makes sense now why you avoid them like the plague."
"They are the plague."
The witty comments sometimes shock the two. The girl is usually quiet around people she doesn't know and is kind for the most part. However, she's also protective.
Max and Oscar chuckle at her antics. Watching her carefully drift in and out of sleep.
~
The next race weekend, they walk in together. It's not uncommon since her and Oscare are practically attached at the hip, but Max is new. They just tell people it's a coincidence.
Oscar has always walked her to her garage. Currently, it's towards the end of the paddock. Meaning they have to pass Alpine to get to it.
Max takes not of how Oscar refuses to look anywhere but the ground. He can't see the female since she's on the other side of Oscar, but he can hear her seething.
The Australian visibly relaxs when they are past.
It sucks saying goodbye to her. They woke up this morning, and it felt perfect. The morning rays leak through the window, limbs tangled up in each other. None of them wanted to get up or leave.
Now, the first had gone off to work, and Max and Oscar were left to walk back down.
Max makes it a point to walk on the side closest to the hospitality entries. He doesn't say anything as they near the door. Some of the guys in charge meandering around right outside.
"I know what you're doing." Says the Australian.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Max looks at him and winks. Somehow, the action calmed Oscar's overreacting brain.
Max waved off Oscar as he jogged to catch up with Lando. The Brit shot him a few confused glances. The ones that said he has questions.
Lando may he an idiot, but he's not as oblivious as everyone thinks he is.
Max leaves that for another day.
~
She knew something was off with the Austr as soon as he entered the room. They're all exhausted from the race, but he was completely void of life.
There's no goofy smiles or sarcastic jokes. Just Oscar, sitting on the bed staring at the wall. She can see him processing something. Whatever it is, it can't be good.
She looks at Max. The Dutch just stares at her with confusion. She'd learned that his upbringing made him mildly clueless when it came to dealing with emotion.
With that in mind, she sets off to Oscar's side. She sits down next to him and takes his hand in her own. "Jack, you gotta talk to us." She signals Max with her eyes to sit on the other side of him. Good thing she's not clueless or they would be in trouble.
"It's stupid drama stuff."
"It's not stupid if it's making you upset." She puncuates with a kiss on his cheek.
"Stupid Alpine and their stupid comments. Apparently, I am not the most expensive but terrible rookie to ever be signed." He sighs. They can hear how he tries to pass it off, but they both know he's lying.
"Lies and slander. You're the best rookie this season. You're driving a tractor right now for fucks sake." Max says.
"Logically, I know that. Emotionally, I don't."
"And you're not required to know that yet, technically speaking." She counters, causing the Australian to roll his eyes.
Max chuckles to himself. “I could crash my car into their garage if you really want me too.”
“As funny as that sounds, I would rather you win if neither of us can even get close.”
“…at least you two are consistently in the points!”
~
Tuesday again. They all lay asleep in bed together. Max opens his eyes for a moment and catches the females gaze.
She places a finger over her lips and points at Oscar. The Australian breathing evenly, sound asleep.

The ice rink was the one place where Logan didn't feel like he had to chase Oscar, but Oscar had to chase him.
Oscar might be the better rookie on the grid this year, but on the ice rink it was a whole different world.
Logan had told Oscar that it was okay if he didn't want to go with him on the ice, he'd have fun on his own too, but Oscar didn't want to hear about it and told him to put on his damn skates.
Logan's face cracking smile had been worth it in Oscar's mind.
Oscar hadn't expected it to be this busy though, even if Logan had warned him that the ice rink was very popular around Christmas.
He wasn't exactly bad at ice skating, but he definitely wasn't as good as Logan.
Logan truly seemed to be coming to life, skating around, making figures on the ice, all while he avoided bumping into people gracefully.
Oscar on the other hand was way, way less graceful. He nearly crashed into 4 people already.
He decided to take a little break and just stood at the side of the rink, still on the ice, leaning against one of those sponsor plates.
Apparently they weren't the only F1 drivers who'd decided to do a little bit of ice skating during the winter break, because he spotted Yuki and Pierre not too far away.
Seemed like with them, Yuki was the more experienced skater and Pierre was more like Oscar.
Like the ice swan and the little duckling. or at least that's how Oscar felt.
He wondered if Pierre felt the same way.
If he looked at Yuki the same way he looked at Logan.
"You quitting already?"
Oscar was shaken from his thoughts by Logan's voice.
"No. I'm just... Observing."
Logan raised an eyebrow, then followed Oscar's gaze. "You mean you're creeping on Yuki and Pierre."
Oscar rolled his eyes and elbowed Logan, but with a playful smile.
"I'm not a creep."
"A spy then."
"Fuck off."
Logan laughs and Oscar can't help but chuckle as well.
"Do you want to do another round on the rink or do you want to give up?"
Oscar glances over at Pierre and Yuki one more time, wincing when he sees Pierre crash against some woman as he makes a turn.
Of course Yuki is laughing, but he also takes hold of Pierre's hand and Oscar smiles.
" I told you," he turns back to Logan then. "I'm not a quitter."
Logan grins and starts on skating backwards. "Come on then."
Oscar huffs, let's go of the board and tries to find his balance again.
He doesn't notice someone almost crashing into him until Logan grabs his hand, pulling him closer, somehow keeping the balance for both of them.
Oscar blinks. Logan chuckles.
"You might be the better rookie in F1, but I'd beat you every day on ice skates."
Oscar doesn't even bother to try and deny it.
"I can't be the best at everything."
Logan laughs. A belly laugh. Loud and free.
It's the most beautiful sound Oscar has ever heard.
What makes it even better?
He never let go of his hand.

WHY I THINK ROSALIND IS STILL ALIVE
The Rookie episodes follow the standard seasonal arc trope of what was started in episode 1, will be resolved in Episode 21. What were the topics of Episode 1?
Chenford
Nolan and the stupid golden ticket and becoming a training officer
Rosalind’s escape
So then each topic would need to be addressed during the season and resolved by the end, right?
The first third of the season (1-7) - NOLAN was the focus of the season and him learning and reacting to the dynamic of being a TO. I love Celina , because she is forcing Nolan to learn and adapt - much Ike Talia did because their backgrounds and motivations are so vastly different than his. And she pushes back on his smug, condescending, know-it-all-ness.
The second third of the season (8-15)- LUCY has been the focus and we’ve seen and are seeing her find confidence and strength within herself via her blossoming relationship with Tim.
In 5x1, Chenford, they are in massive denial about their feelings and attraction to one another - and have their 2nd kiss because of, and ultimately hook up blocked by Rosalind. Plus I love yous and possibly, possibly a proposal. Depends on Rosalind.
That would mean, by season’s end, they should be open and honest with their feelings with each other, in a committed relationship that everyone knows about and finally vanquishing Rosalind once and for all is the last real hurdle to them being together.
The final third (16-end) is about the capturing and ultimate killing of ROSALIND .
I never believed she actually died. Her death was too easy. I think she has a twin. You all can laugh at me, I don’t care. If Lucy + Tim can have unrelated doppelgängers who are lovers? Then, fuck yeah, Rosalind can have a Twin who she sacrificed to secure her freedom and give her time to plot. I don’t think it was an accident that Rosalind’s disguise was of Ashley, or that the Tim in time was in darker blood on the wall.
We had a conversation about EVIL today and whether a person is themselves inherently evil or a person does evil things - a third of the cast had opinions! Plus, there was a Priest in this episode- and Catholic Priests do exorcisms to battle evil. (Altho I hope Damian isn’t involved in any way with Rosalind)
Oscar. I love Oscar. He is a sociopath - EVIL personified, and every time he shows up, very bad things start happening to the people in our show,
Chris returns. Yes, this could be innocent and unrelated. But he’s always seemed off to me. He’s never fully clicked with Lucy. He’s got a nasty/mean streak to him. Hello ? He treated her like crap when she got upset about him singing that song. If he really did watch the video multiple times, that means he watched Lucy DIE multiple times. That’s heartless. And like Voldie he never seemed to care about Who Lucy actually was or help with her trauma.
Plus, the timing of his bleeding out has always bothered me. That UC op was need to know, so how did Rosalind KNOW to leave Chris on her sofa at that exact time. The only person Lucy told was Tamara. (I’m assuming everyone in the precinct is not linked to Rosalind ), so Rosalind had to have cloned Tam’s phone. (Chris and Austin had best chances to do that).
Thought of another one. Chris was picked up at night by Rosalind. A) how the hell did she know that he would need a ride and what time he would need to be picked up? B) What happened between the late night hour of his pick up and when the next morning he was placed in her apartment, like 8 hours later? Was he drugged? Held hostage? There was no mention of torture? I HAVE QUESTIONS! Seems like a very big ball for our detectives to drop.
Nolan publicly took credit for saving Lucy.
We are seeing Lucy really come into herself this season. So having a showdown with Rosalind would be in line with that.
I think the final coda will be Lucy + Nolan + Rosalind in some kind of final showdown.
Oh, hello. Melissa even said the audience said we’d see what’s coming and I believe that starts with Oscar and that smell Lucy deals with next week.
Cannot wait! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

To the anon who wrote an essay about how Lando and Charles won’t be a WDC, do not fear, there are many people with that opinion who normally can’t bring it to light because mclaren fans are psychotic. I find that there is a gap between the driver mclaren portrays Lando as, and the driver Lando actually is, and is visible from his racing data. Mclaren consistently boosts Lando’s ego to make it seem like he is a champion contender and he can fight with drivers who are used to being at the front, which makes his media and fans believe that, when we know he crumbles and bottles under any pressure. All mclaren have done is boost Lando’s ego, but not his skill set and it is beginning to show, especially with Oscar. I also find that mclaren infantilises Lando and discuss his mistakes as “he’s a young driver, he’s young, all young people make mistakes” or “it’s not his fault, is everybody else’s fault” when he isn’t a rookie anymore, hasn’t been since 2019 and shouldn’t be making the mistakes he continually does. It also really irks me that Lando is allowed to make “typically rookie” mistakes and get away with it while rookies such as Max and Alex were absolutely slandered and destroyed for making mistakes and acting like typical teenagers. I have never understood why Lando was allowed to behave like a teenager and make mistakes both on and off the track, while Max was ruthlessly targeted and criticised for the same mistakes.
Sorry about my max rant, but his treatment from his early f1 years by heavy f1 hitters really really annoys me, because he was a child, and I wish he was able to behave his age and be a child, because we knew he had the skills.
I don’t think I’ve come across a crazy McLaren fan but maybe that’s luck idk lol.
I think the thing about Lando is, he’s very fast, and When you’re a rookie that’s what people look at. They assume that your racing acumen will just catch up to the speed, and in Lando’s case I don’t think it has, and maybe it never will. His bottling it for me is more an example of how much he panics under pressure, and I don’t think any amount of experience will iron that out I think he needs to do the work on his head, it’s not about his driving.
McLaren, I have to give them a pass because they have to sell their team and their drivers. They can’t exactly be like “he’s good, but he’s no Max Verstappen…but still buy the shirt”. Again, I think they market him based on this “raw” talent he has, which I agree is a bit stale at this point, but it’s kind of all they’ve got. The last person to win a race for McLaren was Daniel…let that sink in. And it’s the same with building him up…they have to. Because right now he’s the best driver they’ve got and for years he’s the been the best driver they’ve had access to, they have to make him feel like a superstar, make him feel that the team believes in him, and get him to emotionally invest in his place there so that he essentially can’t leave because the treatment is so preferential. And they’ve done it, because he wouldn’t go to Red Bull while he is the darling at McLaren (all about to change imo but that’s another story). So I don’t begrudge McLaren building him up because he is a sought-after driver. It’s sort of the opposite of what Merc is doing with George and we will see how that works for them in the long run.
For me, I feel like a lot of the reason Lando gets babied is because he kind of acts like one. He’s hotheaded, overly expressive, and petulant on the radio, he acts like a 14 year old, so when he makes a mistake you think, kids will be kids. It takes a conscious effort to remember that he’s one year younger than Max, that he’s nowhere near the youngest on the grid anymore.
No one will ever have me believing that the reason Max got so lampooned for his behaviour as a kid was that the bitches were scared. I do think some of the criticism was warranted, because at the end of the day if you are going to be in adult environment, you need to be held to those standards. There’s series for children to race, that series is not F1. I think where it became unfair was his racing style being blamed on his age, where he’s just an aggressive driver and that shouldn’t be something that scares racers unless they’re afraid to race.
Tbh I feel like the goodwill for Lando is going to evaporate once Oscar comes into his own. Because Oscar is already proving that the McLaren is capable of results in the right circumstances if you have the head for it, and he’s also showing a maturity level in his rookie season that is very impressive. I’m very interested to see what happens with Lando’s contract negotiations…
