High Hopes (1988)
If you’re a frequent visitor to my page, you would know that one of my favorite directors of all time is Mike Leigh. His unconventional manner of working without a script and crafting the actor’s performances through workshops creates an actual slice of life printed on film. 1988 was the year that Leigh broke away from being a national figure of the arts and branched off internationally. “High Hopes” is Leigh’s introduction to a wider audience of cinema lovers and 35 years later, he’s viewed as one of Britain’s greatest auteurs.
Tumblr media
The film focuses on a slew of characters that couldn’t be more different in economic classes and personalities. We’re introduced to Cyril and Shirley (Phil Davis and Ruth Sheen), ex-hippies that love Karl Marx, hate Margaret Thatcher, smoke marijuana and take in strangers. Cyril’s elderly mother Mrs. Bender (Edna Dore), a widow losing grip on her life. Cyril’s unstable sister Valerie (Heather Tobias) who is married to a self made businessman and adulterer Martin (Philip Jackson) and finally, Mrs. Bender’s rich neighbors Laeticia and Rupert (Lesley Manville and David Bamber). Over the course of a few days, these characters will clash in the most ironic, humorous and tragic ways.
Tumblr media
50 years earlier, William Wyler’s “Dead End” gleaned on the topic of gentrification (a term not coined at the time). In that film, a slum on the East Side of Manhattan was gradually being transitioned into a high end neighborhood where the upper crust were more appealed by the status of living in such a place rather than fitting in. Mike Leigh took this topic to a whole new satirical level. Mrs. Bender is the last pensioner on a block that is being bought up by condo developers and transformed into prime real estate. When Mrs. Bender locks herself out of her home, Laetita is hesitant to help her, but begrudgingly does so as to not appear too cold. It is inside where both Laetita and Rupert treat her more as an inconvenience rather than someone they are willing to help, much like how they view all poor and working class people with contempt. Leigh doesn’t hide the rich neighbors’ almost-hatred of this poor woman, a savage dig at the upper crust Thatcher-loving milieu destroying the backbone of English society.
Tumblr media
“High Hopes” shows us that both the rich and the poor and left-wing and right-wing are both warped in their everyday lives. Cyril and Shirley talk about revolution, but know that its unrealistic to carry out. Instead, they prefer their current lifestyle because anything else would be a detriment. Out of all the characters, they are the happiest, yet the most idle. Valerie and Martin are the most miserable, even though they are economically stable. Laetita and Rupert want to be seen as generous, whether its helping old ladies or going to homeless charity dinners, but don’t want to lift a finger. If anything, they are hippies masquerading in fancy dress up. Mrs. Bender is the only character that is really salt of the earth, a symbol of a patriotic Britain far gone. And yet, Leigh doesn’t turn these characters into status symbols, but actually living, breathing creations.
Tumblr media
Leigh’s usual revolving door of actors have never disappointed in 50 years of film, television and theater. “High Hopes” is no exception. Every performance emulates the natural dialect of both the neighborhood and the economic class so you get a feel of the rift between the characters. But I would like to highlight one particular scene that shows not only the amazing cast, but the cinematic ambiance of capturing a moment in real time. When the family gathers for Mrs. Bender’s 70th birthday, they are in complete shambles. As the candle is blown out, Valerie insists that her mother has a piece of the cake, but is completely shot down. This leads into a fight in which the camera is solely on Mrs. Bender with the saddest expression imaginable. If this was a Hollywood film, the mother would’ve screamed at them for being rude, but instead you have a much more down to earth reaction. That is a credit to Edna Dore, who I believe should have won every acting accolade in the book for that scene alone. Classic Mike Leigh moment.
Tumblr media
“High Hopes” was a big hit on the film festival circuit, winning an award at the Venice Film Festival as well as winning acting prizes at the European Film Awards for Sheen and Dore. As the last 35 years have shown, Mike Leigh has revolutionized the way in which characters are molded and turned into regular human beings. I have yet to see another director come this close in taking on Leigh’s unadulterated substance.

From hyper-literate Oak Park the former National Youth Poet Laureate and fledgling songwriter Kara Jackson holds folk and country music in her thrall, cast through a captivating blend of brusque imagery, dolorous tones, and wayfaring melodies. Spurred by the death of her best friend and nourished by a small group of Chicago collaborators, including KAINA, Nnamdï, and Sen Morimoto, on her debut album Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love? the singer and guitarist takes neither the gift nor weight of life for granted and still finds time to throw out some cactus-like barbs, squirreling romance while cutting off all the naysayers and dickheads. Lesley Mok considers a musical ensemble as a living force, billy woods and Kenny Segal tell stories of the road, and SABIWA takes her own voice and the ancient nature-mimicking musics of the Thau, Bunun, Atayal and other tribespeople from her native Taiwan as a starting point, where steady undulations punctuated by glottal stops give way to a psychedelic swirl of communal chanting. Plus Mc Yallah, Eva Novoa, Brìghde Chaimbeul, Penelope Trappes, Walter Smith III, Glüme and King Krule, who shows faith in a pair of selfsame eyes amid a world full of sundering.

Natural Enemy (1996)
My rating: 3/10
This cast deserved to be in a much better movie than this half-baked, lazy piece of shit - especially Donald Sutherland, who was trying his absolute best to make the material work and was killed off in an actual dumpster fire for his troubles.

There is an elephant in the room within our discussions on the state of the popular rock during the noughts lurking quite a lot. Yes, I forgot to mention nu metal. I believe the style became a shorthand to simplify the problems of rock in the period. While I would agree the brand had a lot of difficulties, some of the musicians there were quite promising. I mean, Evanescence remain one of those groups no one's really sure what to think of, yet then one samples some of their tunes and one gets surprised. A reason for the latter might be Amy Lee, she stays mentioned as one of the better vocalists of rock, but I still feel the group's underappreciated as the band has a weird place right now, i.e. you root for them, though you go to their concerts for their older material.

"I was pretending that I did not speak their language; on the moon we spoke a soft, liquid tongue, and sang in the starlight, looking down on the dead dried world." (We Have Always Lived In The Castle – Shirley Jackson, 1962)
the 1960s were also known as the swingin' sixties, and that name could not be more appropriate. while some other decades had moved towards comfort, the 1960's truly embraced it. some of the youth simply threw on a tunic and stepped into some pants and walked out the door! the popularity of television broadcasted different styles and trends across the country and the world. new materials like acrylics and polyesters were cheap to produce and to buy, and made fashion more accessible than it ever had been. the swingin' sixties brought the youth miniskirts, striped sweaters, the boxy "mod" look, and the bright, fun makeup associated with famous artists like twiggy. some older women tended towards the skirt + suit jacket combination worn by first lady jackie kennedy, but the comfort of the youth was appealing to all ages. beatnik fashion was also popular, with trim black trousers and dark sweaters. in 1964, hairspray was the most popular beauty product on the market – and it showed in the elaborate updos of the era. as the decade drew to a close, the "hippie" style was a popular look among the youth, with loose fitting tops and baggy pants, as well as maxi skirts. many of the hippies incorporated crafts into their fashion, with patchwork and beadings becoming popular.
this is only a very brief summary – the trends and influences of the 1960s are vast and complex, just as the 1960s themselves were. the social revolutions mirrored the revolutions in fashion, and i could write essays about it. but i am tired and i moved in today.

Jackson, and Harvey Keitel in conversation. FNF prez Eddie Muller will introduce Raoul Walsh’s WHITE HEAT (1949) at American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre, 7:00 PM. On the lighter side, CLUE will play poolside at The Hollywood Roosevelt , 7:30 PM with Lesley Ann Warren in attendance.

The second round of screenings include Richard Brooks IN COLD BLOOD (1967), introduced by producer Michael Uslan, 9:30 at the TCL Chinese Theatres Multiplex, House 1 and the world premiere restoration of GAMBIT (1966), introduced by writer and film historian Sloan DeForrest.
WHITE HEAT
(1949): “Top of the world, Ma!” A G-man (Edmond O'Brien) infiltrates a gang run by a mother-fixated psychotic, James Cagney in a standout performance. This film marks the cinematic movement away from the traditional Warner Brothers’ portrayal of the gangster to the more cynical and psychological film noir interpretation. Virginia Kellogg garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story for the film. Pointless trivia: Naked Gun 33 1/3 borrowed the plot. Dir. Raoul Walsh
IN COLD BLOOD
(1967) Bleak adaptation of Truman Capote’s groundbreaking true crime book. Two men (Robert Blake and Scott Wilson) brutally murder a small-town Kansas family, thinking that ten thousand dollars is hidden in the house. They flee with the forty-three dollars that they actually found, and the FBI hunts them. Dir. Richard Brooks

American Dad - "A Little Mystery"
My third episode of this season (though only the second to air) premiered a few weeks ago. After the craziness of "The Pleasanting at Smith House" and "Into the Jingleverse" this was a more traditional "American Dad" show and it made for a nice change of pace. I handled a lot of the Roger and Hayley detective business, including the reveal of the killer. Some really fun stuff this go around courtesy of writer Laura Beason, director Chris Bennett, assistant director Gerry Galang and fellow board artist Ryan Stapleton. Special thanks to revisionists Madeline Jackson and Lesley Hur for stepping in and cleaning-up a couple sequences for me late in the game. For this episode poster I evoked the artwork of Saul Bass, specifically his poster for "Anatomy of a Murder," which is one of my favorites of his. I think this homage fits the goofy thriller tone of the episode rather well.

The Egyptians never viewed Seth as totally evil. As the Eldest Magician he is a crucial partner in the fight against Apo phis. It is Seth who has the ability and power to fight off Apo phis and Isis fights alongside him. “The magic of Isis and the Eldest Magician is enacted to ward off Apo phis”. Unlike Seth, Isis is in direct opposition to everything that Apo phis represents. Her opposing feminine energy works with that of Seth to defeat the ultimate evil. Without Seth by her side neither Isis nor any of the other deities could defeat Apo phis. If Seth had really been destroyed the annihilating energy of Apo phis could not have been contained and the universe would have been destroyed. In psychological terms he is the chaotic rebel and murderer who can defeat Apo phis because he is like fighting like with like. We unfortunately have need of Seth’s dark side for survival and Isis is aware of this which is why she doesn’t slay Seth when she has the chance.

5 genres you have a soft spot for and personal favorite bands from them? Love to hear what music you find neat
You absolutely activated my autism trap card so I apologize in advance lmao I am VERY passionate about music. Gonna bold the ones I really like
1. INDUSTRIAL - KMFDM, ministry, orgy, my life with the thrill kill kult, nine inch nails, chemlab
2. PUNK - lots of subgenres here lmao
dead kennedys, bad brains, the clash, pure hell, minor threat, rancid, Bob vylan, circle jerks, crass, stiff little fingers
Queercore: pansy division (one of the best bands I've seen live), the muffs, middle aged queers (part of my local scene), hunx & his punx, against me! (Also anarchopunk but I don't wanna add another subgenre), gloss
Riot grrrl: (albeit there's a lot of issues wrt race among other things in that scene but the label is useful for categorizing) bikini kill, L7, bratmobile
Folk punk: AJJ (another fantastic band to see live), the taxpayers, oh lonesome ana (another one from my local scene)
3. NEW WAVE - talking heads, devo, Adam and the ants, Blondie, gang of four, the psychedelic furs, XTC, Elvis costello
4. DARKWAVE - using this as a very BROAD label
Older: sisters of mercy, Bauhaus, depeche mode, soft cell, new order
Newer: ritual howls, the soft moon, type o negative
5. OLDER ROCK - this is another really vague label sorry
Girl groups: the Supremes, the shangri-la's, Lesley gore, the shirelles
Blues & soul: Nina Simone, Billy Holliday, Nat king cole, otis Redding, Percy sledge
Country: Loretta Lynn, Wanda Jackson, Johnny cash, Dolly Parton
Folk: Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Peter Paul & Mary, Joan baez
And here's some other artists I really like that I couldn't squeeze into any of these 5 categories: Viagra boys, fugazi, Ezra Furman, Jane's addiction, hole, the boomtown rats, electric wizard, 100 gecs
I've also got a big mix of punk music, and a big playlist of stuff I play at work, plus playlist of jrock
