Season 17 Posters
I've already posted all of these previously but I figured for convenience sake let's put them all together in one spot.
I hope you enjoy these posters. They're an awful lot of fun to make, and isn't that the important part?

American Dad - "Into the Jingleverse"
This was the second episode I worked for Season 17 (though the last to air) and my first Christmas show. I know Christmas shows are always fan favorites so it was a real thrill to work this one, with the added bonus of this also being Santa show as well. Of all the reoccurring characters on the show, Santa is by far my favorite, with his voice actor/former AD writer Matt McKenna's belligerent reads never failing to crack me up. So it was a true honor to storyboard the sequence in Santa's office where he and Stan debate the merits of skinny jeans. Stan's final flirty pose in that sequence ("Of course, you can show me anything") is maybe the best bit of acting I've done on the show so far. This was a great, insanely complicated episode, and a real testament to skills of the writer, Nic Wegener, director Jansen Yee, assistant director Megan Kelly and my board partner, Ashlee O'Day. Please make "Into the Jingleverse" a regular part of your holiday season.

American Dad - “Footprints”
“Footprints” was my last episode of production season 17 and was one of my favorites of that run of shows. This was also the first episode I worked on where I noticed how much I had improved since my first season. For instance, I had to draw a sequence with an audience sitting in stadium seats, something that defeated me way back on my very first show. I also had to draw a crowd gathered around an alien spaceship that has landed by the Bazooka Sharks football stadium, the largest scale sequence I’d ever had up until that point. I put a lot of hard work into this one and I think it all paid off.
The poster for this episode is heavily inspired by those cheesy, super Christian photos that often accommodate the “Footprints” poem. I’m not much of a painter but the poster needed that overly rendered touch to really make the goofiness land.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention all the great work on this show by director Jennifer Graves, assistant director Valentino So and my board partner Eliana Sellitto. Special thanks is owed to Dave Boudreau and Lesley Hur for stepping up to help me clean-up a couple sequences late in the game. And of course, a tip a hat to long- time writer Joe Chandler, for this his final script for “American Dad.” “Footprints” is a fitting finale for his tenure to the show and I was happy to help bring it to life.

American Dad - "A Little Mystery"
My third episode of this season (though only the second to air) premiered a few weeks ago. After the craziness of "The Pleasanting at Smith House" and "Into the Jingleverse" this was a more traditional "American Dad" show and it made for a nice change of pace. I handled a lot of the Roger and Hayley detective business, including the reveal of the killer. Some really fun stuff this go around courtesy of writer Laura Beason, director Chris Bennett, assistant director Gerry Galang and fellow board artist Ryan Stapleton. Special thanks to revisionists Madeline Jackson and Lesley Hur for stepping in and cleaning-up a couple sequences for me late in the game. For this episode poster I evoked the artwork of Saul Bass, specifically his poster for "Anatomy of a Murder," which is one of my favorites of his. I think this homage fits the goofy thriller tone of the episode rather well.

American Dad - The Pleasanting at Smith House
I’m a huge fan of horror movies so when I received the script for this episode, I was delighted at how many opportunities there were for some real scares (well, by American Dad standards anyway). I asked my director, Tim Parsons, if I could tackle some of the horror sequences and he proceeded to tell me to go nuts.

(Animatic edited by our extremely talented editors)
This sequence is probably my favorite that I’ve boarded on the show so far. I deliberately ignored the traditional American Dad style and used the camera in a much more active way than we usually do. I wanted to make it feel like the camera is from the Wraith’s POV, observing Klaus from a distance. The rushing POV camera is an homage to Sam Raimi’s hyperactive Force POV camera from the end of of the very first “Evil Dead” movie and it still delights me to this day that I managed to sneak it in.
The poster was a similar opportunity to have fun and I tried to push the mock horror as far as I could. It may be my favorite poster out of all the ones I’ve done so far.
Season 17 was a really rewarding season for me, both personally and professionally, and I’m glad the rest of my shows will be airing soon (“A Little Mystery” aired a few weeks ago and I have two more coming up). Stay tuned for more fun.
In the meantime, check out my website ryanrosendal.com if you’re so inclined.

I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in animation six years ago this month. I’d say it worked out pretty well.

So Are You Doing Anything Saturday Night?, digital, 2023 This originated as some concept artwork for a personal short film I've been developing for what seems like years now. In my experience, a sketch can sometimes evolve into something else, in this case the above artwork. I'm a romantic at heart so I have a soft spot for this one. I hope those two kids had a great Saturday night.

Season 16 Posters
Here's another collection of posters I did "American Dad," this time from my second season working on the show. "Dressed Down" and "The Fast and the Spurious" were direct parodies of existing movies ("Phantom Thread" and "Sunshine" respectively) so I had the fun opportunity to mimic the original poster art. In a similar vein, for "Beyond the Alcove" I tried to mimic the hand lettering of designer Pablo Ferro, whose opening credits for "Dr. Strangelove" are among the best film in film history. Season 16 Fun Facts: -My board partner on "Dressed Down" was Pam Cooke, who had previously served as a director during the first fourteen seasons of "American Dad." She retired after finishing up her last show, "The Last Ride of the Dodge City Rambler," in Season 14 but came back to freelance during Season 16. I never met her while I was in the office so it was cool to share a credit with her.
-All the softball sequences in "A League of His Own" were boarded by director Josue Cervantes. How the hell he managed to do this while also supervising everyone else I will never know. -The awful pizza place in "The Fast and the Spurious" was originally called CiCi's Pizza, a real-life restaurant chain. Due to some, uh, "complications" it was changed to SoSo's Pizza. This proved difficult as the CiCi's logo was originally in almost every shot of the spaceship restaurant sequences.
-"Gernot and Strudel" was the first episode I boarded where I felt that maybe I wasn't a complete fraud and that hiring me wasn't a mistake. So that was nice.

Season 15 Posters
Back during Tumblr's heyday, storyboard artists from shows like "Adventure Time" and "Regular Show" used to create posters for their episodes. I believe Rebecca Sugar and Adam Muto were the first to do this for their AT episode, "It Came From the Nightosphere," and the reaction was so positive, everybody followed suit.
The practice has died down a little bit but it's something I always wanted to do and when my first episodes of "American Dad" started airing, I finally found my opportunity.
In Season 15 I boarded three episodes, "Hot Scoomp," "Comb Over: A Hair Piece," and "Crystal Clear." For reasons I can't remember I didn't do one for "Comb Over," but episodes one and three were my first cracks at posters. Compared to what I've been doing now, these posters are pretty simple but I still think they're kind of fun and charming. And more importantly, they highlight the board team for the episode and give us a small moment to take a bow for a job well done.

A Return (of Sorts)
There's something perverse about returning to Tumblr, especially after such a long absence. But what the hell, I'm about to go on hiatus and a little self-promotion here and there never hurt anybody. This was never my main Tumblr, during the heyday I mostly posted on "Many, Many Monsters" (https://manymanymonsters.tumblr.com) a... I'm not going to say "popular" Tumblr but a few animation industry artists followed that account, which was extremely validating at the time.
Of course, I AM an animation industry artist now, which bring this full circle in a way. I figure it might be fun post some artwork now and then with some commentary that's harder to make work on Instagram. Might be.
