oh man, you’re gonna make me think all the way back to that show and drag up all my Leotilda thoughts, akjdalkfjhg. (i’m just gonna do them cuz it’s been so long and we didn’t get nearly as much of Astrid lol, i don’t feel like i know her as a person #rip)

Coffee shop AU: Who is the barista, and who frequents the coffee shop?

Mattie is the barista (anything to get money of her own so she’s not beholden unto her parents for everything). Leo is the regular who takes up residence in the farthest armchair from the door, either because he’s a uni student with 5 younger siblings who won’t leave him alone, or because he’s on the run, living off the grid, and this is the only place nearby with free un-passworded wifi and cheap coffee.

ya know, depending on how we want this lighthearted coffee shop AU to go, haha

Highschool/College AU: Who is the straight-A student, and who’s the backrow slacker?

tbh they are both straight A students, only Mattie is that straight A student who will deny it to anyone who asks because she’s got a devil-may-care too-cool-for-school Reputation(TM) to maintain and fuck you for asking too. Leo doesn’t give a fuck if anybody knows. he needs scholarships, ok? it’s the only way he’s gonna get out from under his father, and hopefully take his siblings with him.

Rivals to loves AU: Who takes their rivalry seriously, and who is half in it just to push the other’s buttons?

Leo takes everything too seriously tbh. it’s a side effect of having a shit life so far and people depending on him. in comparison, Mattie’s life has been a goddamn breeze. everything’s a joke to her, until some petty prank goes a little too far and makes it back to Leo’s dad and the consequences are too real for her to not understand why Leo is the way he is.

Enemies to lovers AU: Which one switches sides?

hmmmm this one’s tricky. i’m gonna say Mattie. she got a lucrative job straight out of uni doing the kind of coding that keeps her engaged -- engaged enough that she doesn’t ask questions about what she’s really doing for them. she swallows the company/government line because it sounds legit on the surface, and it’s not until Leo comes into her life that she has reason to question the line she’s been fed. in the end, he makes her question everything.

Soulmate AU: Who is eager to meet their soulmate? Who absolutely does not want to meet their soulmate?

Mattie isn’t outwardly eager -- the Reputation(TM), remember -- but if really pressed she might admit to buying into the soulmate stuff. her parents aren’t soulmates and she’s always thought that if they were soulmates, maybe they wouldn’t have the problems that they do.

Leo, though. his parents were soulmates, and we all know how that turned out. Leo says fuck soulmates, they’re a scam and a trap and they’ll destroy your life if you buy into them.

Single parent AU: Which one is the single parent? (Alt. if they’re both single parents: Which one is open to starting a new relationship from the start? Which one is never planning on finding love again… Until they meet the other and are instantly smitten?)

let’s go ahead and repurposes our beloved synth siblings into Leo’s children XD for reasons. or, more likely, they are still his younger siblings, he just is now their legal guardian and is struggling to raise them all by himself. they’re more than a handful and the poor guy is drowning.

Doctor AU: Which one is the longsuffering doctor? Which one is the patient?

Leo as the ER doctor who is getting really tired of patching Mattie up every time she comes in injured after some daredevil stunt. she’s doing this shit to Feel Alive, and it’s not like Leo doesn’t understand that self-destructive adrenaline-junkie instinct, but she can only Feel Alive if she doesn’t end up dead.

Bodyguard AU: Who is the bodyguard? Who are they protecting? Which one is secretly pining for the other?

ooh i could see this one going either way. 

Mattie as a government asset, a hacker with knowledge and access so classified that it’s earned her significant enemies. that would probably have Mattie pining for Leo because he’s stubbornly quiet and refuses to engage with her no matter how much she bugs him, because she’s isolated and bored and lonely. it’s not until after he saves her life the first time that he cracks just a bit and Mattie gets to see some of the softness under the gruff exterior. it’s more than enough to make her fall in love.

or Leo as some politician’s son, pretty much ignored when he’s not being dragged into the public eye for PR purposes. he’s never really had anyone (besides Mia) who actually cared for him. so when Mattie gets assigned to his detail and protects him so fiercely, with her life when necessary, and looks him in the eye? talks to him? treats him like someone whose words are worth listening to? yeah, he’s pretty gone on her pretty fast.

Pirate AU: Who is the pirate? Who is the member of the royal family who did not sign up for this?

Leo is a pirate and Mattie is a member of the royal family who gets kidnapped and goes from “oh god pls don’t kill me” to “FUCK YEAH, I WANNA BE A PIRATE TOO, DON’T EVER TAKE ME BACK” in like 2 minutes flat.

Childhood best friends AU: Which one was super obviously in love with the other the whole time? Who was oblivious until they were older?

Leo has always had a crush on Mattie. he was a quiet kid, a little withdrawn, anxious and perennially worried about something or other. but Mattie was bold. always has been, always will be. climbing trees, jumping off of balconies, taking dares and giving them, picking fights and standing up for people who had fights picked with them. that spitfire nature never goes away, and Leo can say with confidence that it’s just as appealing at 19 as it was at 9. the difference is that now Mattie actually looks back at him.

The most frustrating part about the cancellation of HUMANS is that we’ll never get to see Leo Elster realize he is already a GOOD father. We saw it in the way he stepped up and offered to take Sophie to school, helped build a trampoline, and especially in the way he sacrificed himself for Sams safety. Just like Karen did, proving herself as a mother.

It broke my heart to hear him say he wouldnt be a good father. We will never get to see him share these fears with Max and for Max to tell Leo all the ways that he already is.

They built up the Leotilda baby so much and now its never gonna happen, and now i need fix it fics or im gonna DIE

@humanschallenge Day 4 ‘naming day’

this is thoroughly inconsequential and silly but I had fun :’)

The baby is covered with a soft yellow blanket, one of the many Flash had produced as a celebration of having her hands back under control. Niska looks down at the new arrival, and nods to herself. Good. The child looks healthy. She reaches down to lift one tiny hand, checking that all the fingers are present and correct. Immediately her own finger is taken captive, the baby’s fist closing like a vice. Again, good. That’s a healthy grip. She doesn’t pull away.

From the bed, Mattie watches her with amusement. “Getting acquainted, Aunty Niska?”

Niska looks up at her. “We’re not doing that.”

“Hmm, I think we are, but talking’s a little way off yet, even for Turbo-Baby.”

“Turbo-Baby?” Mia echoes from the foot of the bed.

Mattie grins. “I forget you haven’t been here. Well, before we had a name, we had to use something, and Niska would keep going on about synthetic hybrid DNA and all that…”

“So there is a name now?” Max asks, intrigued. “I thought you were still arguing about it.”

Leo and Mattie share a glance.

“Argue?” says Leo sweetly. “Us?”

“Constantly,” says Sophie with a frown. “But go on. Tell us her name. Who won?”

“It’s not about winning, Sophie…” Mattie says, in the pious older-sister tone she’s been prepping for the upgrade to pious mother tone. “And we are going to tell you, but Dad and Toby are running late.”

“You can text them it,” says Sophie. “Come on.”

Leo grins. “Up to you, Mattie, but as far as I’m concerned, Niska’s the one whose face I really wanted to see.”

Niska gives him a Look and disengages the baby’s grip on her finger.

“You’re naming her after Niska?” Sophie says, brightening. “That’s cool. Much more badass than Hope.”

“No, Soph. Alright. Let’s do this.”

The new parents grin at each other. Everyone else waits, filling the spectrum between excited curiosity and thinly-veiled irritation.

Leo lifts the baby carefully from the incubator and sets the bundle down in Mattie’s arms.

“Everyone,” says Mattie grandly, “Meet Thomas.”

This news is met by a few slow synth-blinks and a small surprised sound from Sophie, who now seems even more impressed.

“Cool! There’s a girl in my class called Michael. Like in Star Trek. Names should be genderless, that’s what Mrs Kilburn says, I’m definitely calling my kid Sophie even if…”

Mattie giggles. “Sophie, stop for one second.” She puts her finger on her lips and nods her sister’s attention away from the baby and over to Niska, who is on her third or perhaps fourth blink of acclimation.

“A boy,” says Niska eventually.

“Yes,” says Leo.

“I mean, adhering strictly to the gender binary, for now,” Mattie amends. “You could still get your way at some point in the future, I suppose, Nis, but until we hear otherwise…”

“Until we hear otherwise, you took a fifty-fifty guess and got it wrong,” Leo crows. “The Violet Queen is fallible after all.”

“Don’t call me that,” says Niska, although she doesn’t sound quite as cutting as she might. Shrugging loose all pretence at dignity, she adds, “I’d even prefer Aunty Niska.”

Mattie chuckles, and looks down at her son. “You see, I knew she’d come round.” She nods to where her phone is buzzing away on a nearby table. “Somebody get that?”

“It’s Dad,” says Sophie, picking it up. “Dad? You’ll NEVER guess.” She pauses. “No. But Dad, the baby’s a boy.”

She rolls her eyes and sets the phone aside. “He says his grandchild is ginger and that’s what matters.”

Amid the laughter, Mia leans forwards. “How will you tell Laura, Mattie?”

Mattie’s smile takes on a mischievous element of guilt. “We already called her. I didn’t want to spring the ‘Tom’ thing on her in case she hated it.”

Mia smiles back. “It’s a nice gesture. Have you decided on any other names? Tom Hawkins, Tom Elster...?”

“Hawkins,” says Leo quickly. Mattie glances at him, surprised.

“That name can die with me,” he adds. “It doesn’t stand for anything good.”

“You could just be a Hawkins too, you know,” says Mattie airily.

“Is that a proposal?” he asks, arching an eyebrow.

“If you want it to be. I propose that all of you take ‘Hawkins’, actually, though, if you don’t want Elster. Well, all except Her Royal Highness the Violet Queen Aunty Niska Schaeffer.”

If looks could kill, Thomas would be an orphan by now.

The worst thing about humans getting cancelled is that nothing from last seasons finale will ever be resolved like we will never know if Laura gets out of prison, what will happen with leotilda and their baby and what will happen with Niska and her new powers plus if Astrid ever gets out of hospital or not 😭

The scores are in!

Well, kind of.

There’s not a proper scoring system here as such, but I tallied up all the things I listed as “hits” from my recent roundup of the predictions, and the inestimable @turned-her-brain came out victorious with a whopping 30 correct predictions!

Sarah and I racked up quite a few points by sheer amount of fics written (25 between us, I think) but we weren’t alone!

Honourable runners up were the excellent @half-synth, @nachocheese-itsmycheese, @loliquiu, @rocknvaughn, @markseposts and @lightsaberlesbian - if you (understandably) can’t remember far enough back, then why not have a reread of some of those gems? For a tiny fandom we are GOOD at this writing thing.

So, finally, nearly 11 months after series 3 premiered (can you believe😭) it’s time to reward these predictions with a little Humansy goodness.
