Supercorptober Day 21: "Lavender"
Read on A03 instead
Lena stands in the hallway playing nervously with the key in her hands. A key she’s surprised she still has. She's stood in front of this exact door a hundred (a thousand?) times, used the key to let herself in at least a few dozen times, probably more - yet here she was, unable to force herself to turn the knob. She’s not really sure how long she stands there, but at some point, she finally takes a deep breath to steady herself, squares her shoulders, and lets herself into Kara’s apartment.
It hurts more than she expected it to, being back here. The last time she was in this apartment Lena had come to tell Kara she was wrong about Non Nocere, to ask for forgiveness - and then ended up with Alex’s gun pointed at her head. It’s not exactly a fond memory. Before that, it had been nearly half a year, back when Lena still came over for movie nights and cuddles on the couch. Before Lena found out about Kara’s secret identity in the worst possible way and everything went to shit.
And now Kara is gone. The apartment is quiet and achingly empty without the joyful sound of her laughter to fill it up. It’s been three days since Lena’s deranged half-brother sent Kara to the phantom zone - fucking Lex - and the super friends still have no idea how to rescue her. Lena’s not sure Kara would even want her here, with their friendship still on rocky terms, but she just needed something , some kind of connection, some reminder to keep her from giving up hope.
The apartment hasn’t changed all that much from what Lena remembers, at least as far as she can tell. She walks slowly around the space, taking in all the details she’s seen so many times before, but that suddenly carry so much more weight now because the details are so uniquely Kara. The fluffy blankets on the couch. A blue coffee mug on the kitchen counter with a red supergirl logo and yellow writing that says “Have a SUPER day!” (a gift from Nia), and another mug next to it covered in a pattern of brightly colored donuts. The easel in the corner with some of Kara’s paintings propped against the legs and her box of painting supplies next to it. The assortment of different sized picture frames scattered throughout the spacious loft on various tables and shelves, filled with smiling photos of Kara’s family and friends. Lena stops short when she realizes the picture of her and Kara together is gone from the shelf where it used to sit. It shouldn’t surprise her, after all the hurt she caused, but it still stings - more than it should, considering Lena smashed her own framed picture of them with a whiskey glass. She squeezes her eyes shut and forces herself to swallow the lump forming in her throat.
For whatever reason, Lena decides to wander past the partition into the space Kara uses as her bedroom, running her hand over the familiar blue and green patterned comforter on Kara’s bed. When she glances at the bedside table, she feels her heart stop. Kara didn’t get rid of the picture of her and Lena - it’s right there, on the table next to her bed. Right where she would see it every morning and every night. But why? Why would she want to look at that after everything?
It’s all of a sudden too much for Lena, and she sinks down heavily on the edge of the bed. She can’t stop the hiccuping sob that claws its way out of her chest or the tears gathering in the corners of her eyes, so she grabs one of Kara’s pillows and squeezes it to her body as tight as she can. As she does, her nose tingles with the lingering scent of lavender and vanilla. Kara. Years of being best friends (years of being in love with her best friend), Lena knows that scent, one she used to breathe in and try to memorize every time she and Kara shared a hug or snuggled up on the couch together.
She’d give anything to hug Kara again.
The sharp pang of her anguish cuts into her like a knife twisting in her stomach, and suddenly she feels like she is drowning under a tidal wave of emotions. She clutches desperately at Kara’s pillow and rocks herself back and forth, while she cries deep gasping sobs that feel like they are being ripped from her lungs. Her eyes burn from the hot tears that are now streaming relentlessly down her face, dripping onto the pillow and sliding down her neck to soak the collar of her shirt. Once again, she feels like her heart is being cracked open, but this, this is infinitely more painful. This isn’t just some fight between friends, this is her possibly losing Kara forever. She doesn’t think she can live with that possibility.
“I’m so sorry Kara.” Lena chokes out between labored breaths. “I’m so so sorry. This is all my fault. I promise I’ll find a way to bring you home. I promise.” Her voice cracks on the last words, her throat so raw she can barely speak above a whisper.
Lena cries until exhaustion wins out, until her body hurts as much as her heart, and she has no more tears left to cry. When her breathing finally returns to normal, she decides it’s time to pull herself together and go back to her own apartment. She can’t stay here any longer, it’s just too painful of a reminder of Kara’s absence, and Lena needs to be focused if she’s going to help the team find their missing friend. She breathes in one more deep breath of the lavender and vanilla scented pillow, trying to commit the smell to memory before she leaves.
She’s about to walk out the door when she stops herself. She turns around and walks back to the couch, where she picks up one of the fluffy blankets Kara always keeps there. One they used to share, with popcorn, and chinese takeout, and hot chocolate, and stories about their respective days. One that still smells like Kara. She takes it with her so she can have just one little piece of Kara to hold onto, a reminder of what she used to have, of who she is still fighting for.
———
When Lena gets back to her penthouse, she carefully removes the picture of her and Kara from the broken frame and puts it in a new one. She falls asleep with Kara’s blanket wrapped around her and the picture clutched to her chest.
———
Lena returns to Kara’s loft a week later when the blanket finally loses its scent. Kara is still gone, and the apartment is still too quiet and lifeless. Lena’s heart still feels like it’s been hacked open by a dull axe.
She lets herself curl up on the couch for a moment, finding the other blanket she had left here last time and pulling it tightly around her, breathing in the familiar smell. She imagines Kara cozying up on the couch next to her, socked feet tucked under her legs, her head resting on Lena’s shoulder, blonde hair tickling her neck. She thinks about all the times she wished their cuddling would turn into something more, how she wished she could have had the courage to tell Kara how she felt.
“Kara…” she pleads to the void. “Please come back Kara. I’m so sorry. For everything. I miss you so much.”
“Please… I love you.”
The blanket is wet with tears when the whispered confession floats away into the silence of the empty apartment.
———
Lena ends up staying at Kara’s apartment. She told herself it would be too painful, but it turns out her crippling misery was determined to follow her no matter where she went. So she surrenders, and just lets herself be surrounded by everything Kara. It hurts, but there are also happy memories here, ones Lena wants to hold close to her heart for as long as possible.
———
Another week and a half drags by, and then by some miracle, the super friends are finally able to rescue Kara from the phantom zone (with help from Lena’s yellow sun grenades, which she is very proud of, as she should be). When Kara stumbles onto the ship and collapses into her sister’s arms, everyone can tell that she is physically and emotionally drained. There’s no time for pleasantries or conversation - Kara needs to be taken as quickly as possible to the med bay for a full exam and to get her onto a yellow sun bed so her body can begin to heal.
It’s two full days later when Kara is finally recovered enough for the super friends to throw her a welcome back party at the Tower. Meanwhile, Lena’s anxiety is at an all-time high. Her and Kara’s friendship was in a shaky place when everything went down with Lex, and Lena doesn’t know if Kara blames her for what happened. She doesn’t know what Kara may have experienced in the phantom zone and how that might affect her. Trauma does strange things to people, Lena knows that from firsthand experience. Is Kara even the same person anymore? Will Kara still want Lena in her life?
The first positive sign is that when Kara enters the common room to the sight of donuts, flowers, balloons, and her friends and family gathered around, her face immediately breaks out into a genuine Kara Danvers smile, all full of white teeth, dimples on display and eyes crinkling at the corners. She still seems a bit tired and perhaps a little more reserved than usual, but otherwise very much still herself, and everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief.
Kara works her way around the room exchanging hugs, each team member expressing their joy at having her back, and Kara expressing her own joy and gratitude in return. Lena is the last one left, and she feels her heart flutter and her throat go dry when Kara’s eyes meet hers. The superhero nods her head towards Lena with a fond smile and her arms open wide, and it takes all of Lena’s willpower to force herself to walk when all she wants to do is run at full speed into Kara’s warm embrace. When their bodies finally meet and they melt into each other, everything feels right again. Like all the empty spaces in Lena’s heart are being filled back up and every ache and pain in her soul is being soothed by Kara’s presence. She’s home. She’s home. She’s finally home.
“It’s only because you’re on the team that I’m here,” Kara murmurs in Lena’s ear. She squeezes her so tightly it almost hurts, but Lena just squeezes back as tightly as her own strength will allow her. She feels the tears sliding down her cheeks and takes a deep breath through her sniffles, trying her best to hold herself together. When Kara finally pulls back, she pauses for a moment, her hands drifting to Lena’s shoulders. She cocks her head to the side and looks at Lena with a soft smile on her face and a gentle question in her eyes. “Your scent… vanilla and lavender…?”
Lena knows exactly what she is asking, because Lena usually smells like her expensive perfume, or her coconut and hibiscus scented shampoo. And there are a thousand ways Lena wants to answer that question, a thousand things she wants to tell Kara that she can’t put into words just yet. So she tries to pour all her emotions into a single sentence, and hopes Kara understands. She bites her lip to stop it from quivering and gives a tiny shrug, before she answers in a small shaky voice. “I really missed you.” She ducks her head down and tries to swallow, her throat constricted with emotion. She gathers what courage she can to open herself up, to lift her head and make another confession, whispered so softly only Kara can hear her. “The only thing that kept me going was the hope that I would get to see you again.”
Kara is silent for a minute as she stares into Lena’s glassy green eyes, her own tear-brimmed blue eyes searching Lena’s face for some hidden truth. Lena wills her to find it, to see all the love Lena holds in her heart for her. She wills Kara to hear the way that same heart is currently hammering against her ribs, even while it feels like it's stuck in her throat.
When it seems like Kara has found what she is looking for, she whispers back, her own voice cracking just a little. “I really missed you too.”
There’s a weight to the way Kara says it, the words feeling charged with hidden significance. Lena's thoughts go to the picture of them she found on Kara’s nightstand, and wonders - could she…?  Now it’s her turn to search Kara’s face for answers, and as she does, she finds herself looking into a longing gaze, blue eyes filled with overwhelming affection, and sparking with a sudden fire she’s never seen before. Kara moves her right hand from Lena’s shoulder to softly cup the side of her face, her thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. Lena lets her eyes flutter closed for a second as she leans into the warm touch. There’s a moment between them, a low buzzing electric current connecting their bodies, air thick with anticipation, a silent conversation with their eyes. Kara's eyes flit to Lena's lips, nodding her head almost imperceptibly, and then she leans her body closer to Lena’s, drawing them both towards the inevitable.
The collision course they are on is abruptly derailed by Alex, completely oblivious to the moment of intimacy she just interrupted. “Apologies from Kelly, she really wishes she could be here, but she had a full day of orientation at Social Services.”
Lena reluctantly steps back to allow the sisters to talk, but she can’t help noticing the way Kara's shoulders droop ever so slightly, and the look of disappointment on her face. A sentiment Lena definitely shares.
(What she doesn’t see is the way Alex glances between her and Kara, and the fleeting moment of realization in the older Danvers’ eyes, followed immediately by a quick flash of guilt, as she puts two and two together).
The moment is over though. Conversation moves on, and everyone goes about their business as if nothing happened. And as far as everyone is concerned, nothing did happen - only Lena and Kara are privy to the wordless declarations that passed between them.
But it did happen, and it gives Lena hope. More hope than she’s had in a long time. And she knows there are conversations to be had. Her and Kara need to talk about their fight, and how to trust each other again. Lena should probably explain why she was sleeping in Kara’s apartment. Clearly they need to discuss the feelings it seems they both have for each other, with actual words this time. (though perhaps some of those feelings could be expressed in other ways…)
She knows Kara will need to heal from the emotional and physical trauma of being in the phantom zone, and that alone could prove to be a difficult obstacle to overcome. There’s still a long road ahead of them, and most likely not an easy one.
But for now, Kara is home, and that’s enough.

Lena sighs, dropping the file in her hands to her lap. If she never looks at this spreadsheet again, it will be too soon. Honestly, how difficult is it to please the childish requests of a dozen grown men. Well, if Lena Luthor is learning that apparently it is very difficult, if these “grown” men make up the board of your company. She has the great displeasure of seeing their bright and shining faces tomorrow morning. She is ready, of course. But the majority of her time today, now night will be spent checking that every t is crossed.
“I apologize, Ms. Luthor,” the apology slips from the front seat of the car. Lena glances to the rear view mirror, smiling to her long time driver, Stephen, a gentle soul Lena has come to be very fond of. “4th street seems to be much more popular this evening than usual. I’ll do my best to get you home soon,” his eyes leave Lena’s in the mirror to focus back on the road ahead, which is essentially a parking lot now.
The Luthor checks her watch and sees that she has been in the car a little longer than normal, but not by much at all. “I mean honestly, Stephen, I know you’re quite the gentleman, but apologizing for fifteen extra minutes is a bit dramatic, wouldn’t you agree?”
“A gentleman you say?”
She smiles at his cheeky remark. Stephen was hired by the Luthors while Lena was in boarding school. He was always her favorite to drive her to and from school for holidays or visits. This is namely because he would secretly break the Luthor’s strict rule of “no stops” to get the Lena ice cream or a burger or other treat she couldn’t get at home or school. Not to mention that he simply treated her as his own, he was a father figure she craved, even if he was just her driver. The day Lillian fired him, Lena was heartbroken. When she was old enough to hire her first very own driver, she couldn’t dial the phone fast enough. Now, he’s driven for her ever since.
Lena looks back to the file in her lap, trying to entertain herself through the rush hour traffic. Despite the blaring horns and angry drivers, it was strangely quiet. Almost peaceful.
Suddenly, this was peace was disturbed when the car begins to shake. Lena looks up quickly, her brain running through the possibilities. Her first thought was a sudden change of texture in the road. Something has been spilled on the road and they are simply driving over, but no. A car wreck? But that is not so either as the car is not moving. None of the cars are moving, but they’re all shaking.
“Stephen?” she asks shakily, locking eyes in the reflection of the rear view mirror. Concern is laced in both stares, unsure of what is happening. Then just as quickly as it began, it is over. They look around them at the world that has now stilled. It clicks instantly.
-I was distracted and in traffic. I didn’t feel it when the earthquake happened.
“Earthquake,” Lena murmurs quietly.
“I believe so, Ms Luthor,” Stephen answers. It hadn’t been a question, but that’s not important. He quickly turns in his seat, “Are you alright?” The genuine concern on his face touches Lena, not many people genuinely concern themselves over her anymore.
She smile reassuringly, “yes, are you?” He nods, before turning back to the front. They both look out the window. There doesn’t appear to be much damage. Some flower pots fallen from window sills, branches fallen from trees, a few pedestrians getting back to their feet after being knocked down. From the looks of it, there is no major property damage or injuries. Well, not here at least.
Lena worriedly chews her bottom lip. No damage here, doesn’t mean no damage. And where there’s damage, Supergirl will be trying to help.
-But it really got me thinkin’. Were you out drinkin’? Were you in the living room Chillin’ watchin’ television?
It’s silly she knows. Kara is kryptonian. She is fine. There is absolutely no reason for Lena to be worried. The only way she could seriously be hurt is if seven buildings fell on her. Based on what she experienced, it is highly unlikely seven buildings have fallen on the kryptonian. The other option would be if there was kryptonian involved. Lena gets lost in her worry for the blonde that she forgets she is not supposed to worry about her.
Kara lied. For years, she looked Lena in the eyes and betrayed her. Worst of all, Lena all but begged her not to, and still.
The CEO pushes her feelings down. Little boxes. There have been a lot of little boxes in the last few months. It was nearly a year since Lex used his dying breath to reveal Supergirl’s identity. A little less since Kara finally grew the balls to tell Lena herself.
It had taken nearly every one of her friends to convince Lena not to use the Myriad. ‘Kara’s friends,’ the voice in the back of Lena’s head snapped. Regardless, she didn’t use it.
When the dust had settled, Kara had been the one pulling for Lena the most. Telling anyone who would listen how every bad thing the Luthor had done had been for a good reason. She was tired of being hurt and wanted no one to hurt another person ever again.
Whatever Kara said, it worked. Lena has received minimal retaliation from legal forces for her unfinished plans. Her public view had remained primarily intact thanks to a few Catco articles.
All part of an apology. An apology Lena doesn’t want. She had tried, honestly. Desperately wanting to repair the broken relationship with her best friend, and almost lover. But the damage had been done. For months they danced around each other, trying to find the balance of a new normal.
They couldn’t find it. No matter how amazing Kara was, Lena couldn’t fight the lump in her throat when Kara smiled at her. The tears that Kara’s touch brought to her eyes. The pain in blue eyes when she saw these reactions.
Kara loved Lena. She knows that, but that’s what makes it hurt that much more. Every soft glance and gentle touch filled with love that Lena wants to fall into. But she can’t fall somewhere the ground had already been ripped from beneath her. After several months of trying, they both knew it was pointless.
Kara continued to fight, but Lena had given up, retreated into herself. It broke her heart to do so, but it would be worse to drag this (whatever this is) on any longer. The Luthor has pulled herself from the Super’s life, and eventually Kara had caught on.
They both made their peace.
It's been a year now. Think I've figured out how, How to let you go and let communication die out.
They’ve made their peace.
It doesn’t matter that the slightest sense of danger sends Lena’s fears into overdrive. It doesn’t matter that all she wants to do in this moment is call Kara and make sure she’s ok. Doesn’t matter how much she just wants to fall into arms she knows will be open. They’re always open.
None of it matters because she’s moved on. It was her decision, and that’s fine.
-I know, you know, we know, you weren't down for forever and it's fine.
Lena tries to focus back on her file. Forget about Kara. Forget her hurt. Forget her worry. However, that is easier said than done when you heart is beating out of your chest.
The CEO drops the file again. Looking up, she sees that traffic has yet to move again after the earthquake. She is trying to find the reason for this when she sees it.
A blue and red blur in the sky.
The Girl of Steel hovering fifty feet in the air.
She is looking out over the scene, looking for those in need of help, of course.
But when the Super’s eyes lock with Lena’s, she has to hold her breath. Obviously there is concern in Kara’s eyes, but is that really relief? Did she really see her release a sigh the moment they locked eyes? Was Kara really there to check on her?
The spooked Super turns slightly, dipping down to the road too far in front of the Luthor to be seen. When she rises again, two pieces of a broken light pole fill her hands.
Of course, Lena scolds herself. Kara is Supergirl for heaven’s sake. She’s the protector of National City, why on earth would she waste her time worrying about Lena.
Traffic then begins to move with the pole now out of the way. She watches Kara fly off, while the car starts to move.
“Home, Ms Luthor?” Stephen asks.
She looks out the window. Kara is gone, as Lena knew she would be. Kara doesn’t care about her. She told her not to.
Kara is busy. She has better things to do, better people to worry about. Lena needs to worry about how to drown the feeling in her chest. It’s an earthquake, not Armageddon.
“Yes,” she replies thinking of her apartment and the scotch waiting for her there. She wouldn’t call it home, but it serves its purpose. As they drive, she can’t help but think what she would do if this really was earth’s last day. What would she say if she really could call Kara?
-I know, you know, we know, we weren’t meant for each other; and it’s fine.
Kara sits at her kitchen island thumbing through her options for take out orders. She can’t decide what she wants, and there’s no one else eating here tonight to help her choose. She flips over the top menu (a pizza joint) and freezes when she sees the scribbled notes next to menu options.
These notes plague every menu. Each note details Lena’s favorite menu items on each menu. Kara had written them down at the start of their friendship, but she has them all memorized now. She wanted to make sure she could order exactly what Lena wanted without having to ask. The note brings tears to her eyes now. She runs her fingers over the cursive letters that had been written quickly, in secret to hide her gesture. She reaches for her phone. Kara hates vegetarian pizza, but tonight it’s the only thing on the menu she wants.
Less than a minute after completing her order and hanging up the phone, the ground suddenly shakes beneath her. She uses her hearing to try and pinpoint the origination of the sound, and she can hear the earth plates grinding together.
Earthquake.
It’s not a terribly violent shake, but she does quickly look around for things that may fall. Thankfully the kryptonian can speed around the room to catch objects before they hit the ground (a trick Alex has always claimed to be very jealous of during occasions like this.)
It seems to happen in slow motion. Her hands are full and the apartment shakes for the last time. In the corner of her eye, Kara sees a picture frame leaning dangerously near the edge of its shelf. She tries to turn and reach, but is a microsecond too slow to stop the crash.
“No!” the blonde exclaims as she watches it hit the ground, glass shatters and the frame splits. She lets out a long sigh. She deposits the items in her hands on the nearest table before approaching the picture. The frame is ruined, but the photo itself seems to be in tact. She grabs it. The photo of her and Lena cheek to cheek from one of their last game nights.
The picture makes Kara smile, and then frown. Is Lena ok? Was she hurt in the earthquake. Kara is kryptonian and fine, but her fear for the Luthor twists in her stomach.
-I tried to imagine your reaction. It didn't scare me when the earthquake happened.
Kara remembers the last earthquake that hit national city. Her and Lena had gone out to dinner, and she let Lena drag her out for a few drinks after. It wasn’t like the alcohol actually affected her, but Lena didn’t know that. Kara had to pretend as the night progressed. Sloppily matching Lena’s level of slurred speech and loss of balance.
It took Kara about four seconds to convince Lena to stay at her place, so they could take of each other if one got sick. Late in the night, they finally cross the threshold into Kara’s apartment. Without any grace at all, they begin to make their way through the apartment. The pair barely make it to the kitchen island when Lena looses her footing and falls.
Kara feels her heart drop, afraid Lena has hurt herself. The laugh that bubbles past the Luthor’s lips washes away any worry left in the Super’s heart.
Kara laughs with her as she gets the girl back on her feet. They stand face-to-face. Kara has her hands tightly on Lena’s hips. For balance of course, but neither can ignore how the contact just feels right. Or how the way Lena’s hold on Kara’s arms just feels right. Their eyes dance across each other’s faces before their gaze falls finally on the lips. The pull is irresistible, so they don’t resist. They slowly and hesitantly lean in, afraid to break this fragile moment. Their lips meet, and the feeling is magical.
Unfortunately, it’s over before it truly began.
They are holding each other, lips pressed together for the first time when the floor shakes beneath them. This time they both tumble to the floor. Lena falling on top of Kara’s chest.
One little shake and the floor is still again. Kara uses her super hearing to listen for aftershocks or cries for help. But other than a little bit of conversations, all is quiet. Nothing that needed Supergirl’s immediate attention. The earth quake was barely strong enough to break a vase. Lena’s laugh is strong enough to break Kara from her thoughts.
“Alright, lets get you to bed,” the blonde says playfully. She decides tonight is not the best time to confront the emotion analyzation of kissing her best friend and love of her life.
Plus, Lena is drunk. Kara wonders if she’ll even remember this come morning.
-But it really got me thinkin' That night we went drinkin' Stumbled in the house and didn't make it past the kitchen.
If Lena remembered, she never said anything. Kara would be lying if said she was just as disappointed as she was relieved that Lena never brought it up. Relieved that their friendship was safe, but disappointed because it meant they would stay just friends.
Disappointed because it was another secret to keep from her best friend.
That was all so long ago though. Before Lex told Lena she was Supergirl. Before Kara told Lena she was Supergirl. Before Lena told Kara she already knew. Before Lena told Kara she had been using her. Before Lena told Kara to stay away.
It’s been agonizing, but Kara is respecting Lena’s wishes.
-Ah it's been a year now. Think I've figured out how, How to think about you without it rippin' my heart out.
That doesn’t mean she stopped thinking about Lena, the exact opposite actually. She thinks about her constantly. It takes everything she has not to listen for Lena’s heartbeat when she wakes up in the morning or before she goes to bed like she used.
However, some habits die hard, and an earthquake does not help matters at all.
‘There’s no harm in checking,’ Kara thinks to herself. Lena doesn’t have to know. She listens, searching for the very specific rhythm. If she’s being honest, Kara would admit that she keeps her hearing tuned in to Lena’s heartbeat at all times. That will never change. She knows that is not the meaning over “moving on”, but she also can’t bring herself to care. Most nights, that sound is the only thing that can lull her to sleep.
The Kryptonian is so lost in her thoughts that she doesn’t remember going on autopilot. Her limbs move without her command. She changes into her super suit and flies out the window, all while mentally absent.
When her brain fog disappears, she finds that she is flying over the city, specifically the busiest intersection in all of National City at a complete stand still, bumper to bumperShe tries to regain alertness when her feet hit the ground. There’s no clear sign of panic from anyone. No blood that Kara can see. Some children are crying and adults are worrying but all out of shock instead of pain or fear.
Kara looks out again, looking for what made her subconscious bring her here. She’s x-raying cars for injured passengers. There are so many cars, but only one causes her heart to stop.
There is a black SUV amongst all of the others. The car has a driver in the front seat and a lone passenger in the back.
Suddenly, Kara knows why her mind brought her here.
Lena Luthor sitting in the back seat, eyes roaming as she looks out the window.
-I know, you know, we know, you weren't down for forever and it's fine. I know, you know, we know, we weren't meant for each other and it's fine.
Maybe Lena hasn’t noticed her. She slaps herself internally. There’s only one blonde girl flying around in the air. Of course, she will notice Kara. There’s no question about that.
The real question: does she feel the same way Kara does right now?
Kara knows the answer she wants to be true and the one that is most likely true, and they’re completely different. She doesn’t have time to contemplate however because suddenly Lena Luthor is staring back at her. Maybe she had felt the weight of Kara’s stare, maybe she had already been looking for Kara, maybe it was complete accident. Lena was looking at all the people, and her eyes just so happened to find Kara.
Kara decides the last option is the truth. Lena asked her to stay away. Lena moved on. Lena doesn’t care about Kara anymore.
But the look in Lena’s eyes betray her. Kara can see concern and relief wash over the CEO’s face, and for some reason that scares her more than she was in the apartment.
She can’t be here any longer. She may be the Girl of Steel, but Lena’s eyes are breaking her heart into more pieces than she can carry.
Kara needs an out. She finds it further down the road from Lena’s car. One of the light poles had been knocked over, blocking the entire intersection. It landed on nothing but concrete, no cars or pedestrians stuck underneath.
The Kryptonian takes this opportunity to get free. She quickly runs and grabs the traffic pole before shooting off into the sky towards the next person(s) who need help.
As she retreats from the scene, Kara keeps a steady focus on the heartbeat sitting in the backseat.
They didn’t work. There was too much baggage from both of them. As hard as they tried, it was doomed. They could never have a forever together.
It occurs to Kara that sadly sometimes forever is just a day. She tries to wonder what that would even feel like, be like.
-But if the world was ending You'd come over right?
“You are one hundred percent certain?” Lena asks. This isn’t something they can just let go with ‘pretty sure.’ Everyone’s life depends on it. Literally, everyone.
“Yes,” the voice on the other side of the phone says. “There’s nothing that can be done,” regret full in his voice, and even fuller in Lena’s chest.
That’s it then. This is the last of the brightest scientist Lena knew to call, and he said the same thing the rest of them had. Earth’s sun will explode. It could be today, tonight, could be sometime tomorrow, but definitely less than 24 hours. Every scientist on earth, Lena included, has spent the past two days frantically searching for a solution, but there isn’t one to find.
The sun will explode.
“Alright then,” she sighs. Every particle in her being screams at Lena not to give up. Of all the industry leaders, she held on the longest, refusing to let this be the end.
“Goodbye Lena,” comes quietly from the phone.
But this is the end, “Goodbye Spencer.” She hangs up the phone and looks at the lab full of employees and coworkers with worried faces.
Lena sets the phone on the table and looks around. All of the brilliant people who have been working by her side. Good people who deserved much better than this.
“What do we do?” one of them asks. They hadn’t expected to fail. They hadn’t thought about what to do if they failed.
Lena wants to say keep working, but these people have sacrificed so much of their time already. She can’t ask for anymore of it.
“Go home.”
-You’d come over and you’d stay the night?
The sun is going to explode. It doesn’t matter why or how. It’s going to happen regardless.
All that matters is how to spend the time they have left. So Lena sends everyone home to be with their families. Since she doesn’t have a family at home, she sits at her desk. Guilt heavy on her shoulders and a drink heavy in her hand.
“Ms Luthor,” a knock comes from the door. Jess pokes her head in the room, “Ms Luthor?”
Of course Jess would be the last to leave, loyal to the end. Lena can see the bag in her hands and worry in her face.
She smiles, “Jess, we’ve known each other long enough, I think you can call me Lena now.” The girls in the door sighs with a smile.
“Lena,” she kind of shifts on her feet, a sign of unease, “You don’t have to be afraid to call her.” This peaks her boss’s interest. “I’m sorry if I’m overstepping,” she looks down nervously, “I know you don’t speak anymore, but today, you should call. I know you want to, and I know why you haven’t these past months.” Lena sat in amazement, maybe she had more friends than just Kara. Jess smiles, “All of those reasons, they don’t matter. You have been the best boss I could have had. I am grateful everyday that you hired me. I just... I don’t want you to be alone.”
Lena smiles because she’s right. Jess is always right. “Thank you Jess,” she says quietly, “for being a good friend.” The term sparks a smile across her assistants face. “Go home to your son and husband,” she says, “give that baby a kiss for me.”
“I will,” she waves sadly before slipping from the office.
Lena eyes the cell phone sitting on her desk. Her hands itch. She doesn’t try to fight it. She knows she would lose and call anyway.
-Would you love me for the hell of it? All our fears would be irrelevant.
Against her better judgement, Lena presses the phone to her ear. Relationship Rules 101 says that this is probably the wrong decision, that she would regret it tomorrow in the morning. But none of that matters.
You can’t regret anything tomorrow morning, if there isn’t going to be a tomorrow morning.
-If the world was ending You'd come over right?
“But what if I-“
“Kara...”
“I can-“
“No, Kara.”
“I mean we can call Oliver or Barry. Cisco has to know something,” the blonde desperately pushes through everyone else’s interjections. “Or or Sara, if we get out of the timeline, we can have time to find a solution or or even go back in time to fix it or buy us all a little more time or or something,” she’s scrambling, and the look on everyone’s face is telling her that it’s helpless to do so. She still fights, “we can... I can...”
In the middle of the DEO, Alex slowly walks forward until she’s right in front of Kara. She reaches up and cups her little sister’s cheeks, “it’s over, Kara.”
Tears begin to fall from the Kryptonian’s eyes, “but I have to do something.” The sun is going to explode, sooner rather than later apparently. Everyone at the DEO, Superfriends, Alex, Kara, everyone has been working for a solution. Slowly one by one losing hope, realizing there is no hope. No fix to this one, but Kara can’t accept that. “I’m supposed to protect Earth,” she feels so lost. This is her one purpose. She can’t fail.
A kiss pressed to her forehead, pulls her from her thoughts. Alex looks into her eyes, “you did.” When Kara tries to shake her head no, Alex nods, “you did. You did protect earth time after time. You did everything you could, just this time it’s not that simple. Kara, we are at the end.” She wipes away the tear that falls and pulls her sister as close as possible.
When the pull away, Supergirl looks around the room of DEO agents who deserve so much better than her. Than a superhero who can’t save them. She still feels lost deep inside. She turns to Alex, “what do we do?”
The older Danvers takes a deep breath, “well I am going home to Kelly, and you are coming with me.” She tucks a strand of blonde hair behind one of her ears. Alex turns to James who is standing across the table next to J’onn, “and so are you and you.” She then nods her head in the direction of Nia who is clinging tightly to Brainy’s arm, “and you too. I want to spend whatever time we have left with my entire family.” They all nod, smiling somberly. “Everyone go home,” the DEO director says to all of her agents, “go be with your people. Hold your families.”
Alex grabs Kara’s hand and begins leading everyone to the door, but she she is met with resistance from her sister. She turns and sees the turmoil in Kara’s eyes instantly. Not all of Kara’s people will be there when they get home.
Lena won’t be there when they get home.
“She’s alone,” is all Kara can manage to say.
Alex sighs. She knows her little sister is still in love with her ex-best friend. She knows she probably always will be. She’s watched Kara try to pull herself together this past year. She watched as Kara started to smile again, laugh again. All the while aware that part of the blonde’s heart was no longer inside in her chest, it was across town, tucked deep inside the heart of a woman who told her to stop calling.
“Kara, she chose-“
The older Danvers is interrupted by the sound of Kara’s phone ringing. They both look down and see the name and picture on the screen.
The sisters lock eyes. Alex can see Kara battling the guilt just through her eyes. The guilt that means she might not be going home with her sister. The guilt that means they might not get spend their last hours together. The guilt that Kara has no business to be feeling. The guilt Alex is determined to wipe away this instant.
Alex pulls her sister into a tight hug, whispering in her ear, “I love you, Kara.”
“I love you, Alex.”
They nod to each other once, before Alex watches her little sister fly out the balcony.
Watches her fly home.
-The sky'd be falling while I'd hold you tight.
Kara lands gently on the balcony of Lena’s office. A quick x-ray of the building confirms her suspicion that Lena was the last one in the building, of course she was.
She sees Lena sitting at her desk, so she lightly knocks on the door. A wave is all the response she gets, so she lets herself in.
The Luthor spins her chair to face the Super. The severity of the situation dripping from her entire body. The exhaustion of the fight heavy on her shoulders. The guilt of defeat printed in her eyes. “Hi,” she brings a glass of her most expensive scotch to her lips. She stands and makes her way to the bottle on the other side of the room, “do you want a glass? Hate for it to go to waste.” Lena bites back a bitter laugh.
Kara shifts uncomfortably on her feet, “no, thank you.” Lena just shrugs pouring herself a very generous pour. They both begin to wonder if they made the wrong decision.
How do they do this? They’re strangers, but they’re not. How do they do this? How did they go from strangers to best friends to more to nothing to whatever this is?
There’s no rules to this.
How do they do this?
How do they go from “stop calling me” ...from “we don’t work” ...from “too many mistakes by both of us” ...from “there’s no fixing this” ...from “we can never be together” To “if we only have tonight, I choose you.”
Kara guesses the best place to start is an apology, “I’m sorry,” she whispers from just inside the door. She hasn’t brought herself to walk fully into the office.
Without turning around, Lena just shakes her head, “do not apologize, Kara.” She takes a drink. She doesn’t know what she’ll do if she looks at the blonde, so she just looks at the wall.
Kara nods, looking down to her feet. She takes a deep breath, “I tried” is all she can think to say.
That snaps something in Lena. She feels it coming before she can do anything to stop it. She slams her glass onto the table, “You tried, I tried, we all tried! Kara.” The words rip from her mouth and she doesn’t know why. Kara doesn’t deserve it. The added guilt of her outburst false on her shoulders as the slump, and she fights the sob trying to push past her lips.
The blonde clenches her jaw, taking a step forward, “Lena-“
“I don’t want to talk.”
“Then, why did you call me here?!”
No rules, and apparently it was Kara’s turn for the frustration to get the better of her.
They sit in tense silence for what seems like forever. Neither can move or speak or breathe.
The kryptonian almost turns to leave, when she notices the Luthor turning slowly. As soon as they met eyes, there is no anger, no tension. Kara closes distance and instantly wraps Lena in her arms.
The brunette falls into the blonde’s arms, finally releasing the sob she has been burring.
Because of course there’s not a reason. Just a need.
-No there wouldn't be a reason why. We would even have to say goodbye.
They lay tangled together in Kara’s bed, trying to catch their breath. Clothes discarded by the window Kara flew them in. The garments had been ripped off bodies as they were needy to fall into the bed. The CEO had hesitated at the sound of fabric ripping and seeing her favorite dress in pieces, but then she remembers. It’s not like she’ll ever wear it again. Pushing the thought to the back of her mind, she let Kara work magic on her.
That was hours ago. Now, Lena rests her cheek against Kara’s chest, listening to Kara’s heartbeat, elevated but strong and steady. They lay in silence, minds numb from the circumstances, limbs numb from the love making. They know they’re are down to their final moments.
Lena doesn’t know what’s gonna happen, if she’ll remember anything when she gets to where they are going. But if she will, the only thing she wants to remember is the feel of Kara’s body against her own, every inch of skin connected as much as possible. She breathes in the blonde’s scent, everything she has missed since she sent her away, “I’m so sorry.”
It’s the first thing either of them has said since they left the office. They know that they were scared. This whole thing is so fragile, but somehow they’re here, together. Even if only for this moment.
Kara presses a kiss to the top of Lena’s head, running her fingers through raven hair, “me too.”
It’s peaceful in the most bizarre way possible. There’s nothing for them to do, to say, to worry about, to think. There’s nothing because soon it will all be gone. All they had to was be together, relish the feeling. They close their eyes, breathing and heartbeats lining up. The first time they’ve been completely in sync ever. There are no lies, no plots, no sides. Just them and their feelings.
Just them together when a deafening crack shakes the entire earth signaling the beginning of the end.
Both women begin to shake, scared of what’s to come. They cling tightly to each other, waiting for whatever happens when the sun’s ripple effect reaches earth.
Kara has only wanted to say to one thing since the day she met Lena. Here, holding her as tight as she can without hurting her, this is her last chance to say it. So she doesn’t even try to hold it in, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” the Luthor responds immediately. She leans up pressing her lips and entire body as close to Kara’s as possible.
They press their foreheads together, breathing the same air.
“Goodbye Kara.”
“Goodbye Lena.”
-If the world was ending You'd come over right? You'd come over right? You'd come over, you'd come over, you'd come over right?
Right?
Kara’s feet feel heavy as she touches down on the balcony of her apartment. Several trees had fallen, a couple of light poles blew over, and a foot bridge nearly collapsed, but other than that, National City made it through the earthquake with only slight property damage and minor injuries.
It wasn’t her Supergirl duties that caused Kara’s shoulders to sag with exhaustion. No, that doesn’t faze her in the least. Her emotions were another thing entirely. She spent the entire day on the fence between worrying bout Lena and ridiculing herself for doing so.
She numbly makes her way into the kitchen, hoping to find something to keep her mind off of a certain set of green eyes. On the island, Kara finds two stacks of pizza boxes. Most of the boxes are from her order that she had completely forgotten about, but there were three boxes from Kara’s other favorite pizza restaurant with a note attached to the lid of the the top box.
Kara, Alex and I figured you hadn’t eaten yet before the earthquake. While you were being “super”, I dropped these off, and ran into your pizza delivery guy in the elevator. I have no doubt you will put each slice to good use. Enjoy! -Kelly (the signature is followed by a small heart)
Kara smiles. Man does she love when her sister and her sister’s girlfriend enable her to eat her feelings. Before she can even get the first box open, there’s a knock at the door.
She’s so tired that she doesn’t even bother to x-ray to see who it is. The blonde just opens the door and sees the last person she’d expect on the other side, the only person she truly wanted to see.
Lena stands in the hall. Her eyes are classic “deer in headlights” wide and blank; Kara’s are a pretty close match. They stand there. Neither knowing what to say.
Kara is the one to open her mouth first, but when she does, no words come out. The blonde feels an intense fear because Lena is right there, right in front of her. All she wants to do is reach out and hold her, but she stays frozen. Scared that the smallest moment will send the Luthor running.
It seems she was right.
Lena suddenly shakes her head, “I shouldn’t have come here... I’m sorry, I should go.” With that she turns and begins to walk down the hall.
Kara’s instincts immediately scream, ‘No!’ But her mouth just says, “Lena, wait...” as she follows her into the hallway.
-I know, you know, we know, you weren't down for forever and it's fine.
Lena almost makes it to the elevator, when Kara places a hand on her shoulder stopping her in her tracks. She turns, years already in her eyes, “Kara, I’m not here to...” Words fail her, “We don’t... we can’t,” her voice cracks.
‘Can’t? Can’t what?’ Lena thinks to herself. Can’t be together? ‘We know that already.’ But can they just see each other at least? ‘Not without it hurting.’
“I know,” Kara whispers, because she does. But she cannot live with the ache in her limbs to reach out for her love. “I just...,” her arms raise involuntarily, “please, I just need...”
And oh how Lena wants to just fall into those open arms, always open. Her reservations hold her back, “it won’t be-“
“I know, but please.”
It won’t be forever, but maybe just one night.
-I know, you know, we know, we weren't meant for each other and it's fine.
They lay tangled together in Kara’s bed, trying to catch their breath. Clothes discarded by the bedroom door that Kara carried Lena through. The garments had been ripped off bodies as they were needy to fall into the bed. The CEO had hesitated at the sound of fabric ripping and seeing her favorite dress in pieces, but then she remembers. Right now, she couldn’t care less if she ever wears it again. Pushing the thought to the back of her mind, they fell to the bed together.
Lena rests her cheek against Kara’s chest, listening to Kara’s heartbeat, elevated but strong and steady. They lay in silence, minds numb from the circumstances, limbs numb from the love making.
They know they’re tempting fate. Stealing moments, looks, touches that aren’t theirs to keep.
They wish it really was the end of the world. It would make this so much easier. They wish that this was all they had. That they didn’t have to wake up tomorrow morning and go back to pretending they don’t love each other.
But they do.
This morning, they were strangers, but they weren’t.
Tonight, they’re in love, but they can’t be.
Tomorrow, they’ll be strangers again.
Maybe they’ve finally made their peace with it or maybe they haven’t.
Either way, tonight they’re just going to pretend.
-If the world was ending You'd come over right?

I find MBTI amusing, and while trying to figure out Lena Luthor's type, I discovered she's categorized as an INTJ. I admit that at first, it didn't seem quite accurate, but as I observed more and more interactions with other characters, especially with Kara Danvers, I had to agree. Sometimes bossy, focused on her goals, often labeled as evil... but with Kara Danvers/Supergirl, it's a 'do anything for her' situation because us INTJs are like that when we find our favorite person; that person becomes our comfort person. I understood Lena's constant need to hug Kara at almost every opportunity they meet because she's her comfort person... and I love that ♥️

Broski, you can't just say "Lena smiles like squirtle" and expect me to not scream laughing with the mental picture of Lena dressed up like one of the sunglasses-wearing members of the Squirtle Squad (probably when Kara insists they all dress up as Pokemon for Halloween one year). I will now be chortling about "squirtle-smiles" Lena for the rest of the day. Thank you so much, broski (hope you're having a great day ✊🏼😎)
when she does that straight line or upside down smile, i can't help but see a little of squirtle there like just look!!!!

something broken about this (but i might be hoping about this
Upon the realization that it’s Supergirl—no, Kara—at her side, Lena releases more frustrated tears and tries to pull away from the hand gently caressing her back.
“Stop!”
Kara’s hand lifts away from her shoulder, but she doesn’t move away. “Lena, please.”
“No! You don’t get to do this. Not when this is because of you!” Lena cries, taking an unsteady step back. The scotch is really starting to catch up to her now.
Kara stands her ground, but raises both hands to demonstrate that she comes in peace. “Lena…”
"Stop, stop!”
“Lena, please. I saw you out here alone and it looks like you’ve been drinking. I just want to help, I swear.”
“Don’t pretend to care about me now.”
“I’m not pretending, Lena! I love you!”
Lena scoffs. “Spare me.”
Or, Lena's misguided assumption that she has drunkenly seduced Kara leads to a much-needed confrontation months after Kara's betrayal has left their friendship in ruins.

Irish (soft season 6 ficlet)
Kara knew something was wrong.
Not dangerous wrong. Lena’s heart rate was steady and calm, and there was no one else in the apartment with her. But as Kara flew above the few buildings left to her apartment, she could see how Lena was hunched over, see the stress and sadness in her body. And it made Kara’s heart ache.
Landing in the open window, Kara stepped inside, the small taps alerting Lena to her entrance. “Kara,” Lena said, trying to hide the distress on her face as she rose from the couch, grabbing at VHS tapes spread in front of the TV. “You’re home early.”
“They put out the fire before I got there,” Kara said softly. “The winds weren’t as bad as they thought.”
Lena nodded, hurriedly placing the pile of tapes into a familiar box. Kara had flown the box back to National City herself - one of the many artifacts carried over from Lena’s mother’s home, which Lena inherited at the age of 18. Lena had only gone once or twice as an adult, until the discovery of her magic made her curious to reconnect to what she could of her mother. “Are you okay?” Kara asked.
“I’m fine,” Lena said.
“Lena.” Kara stepped forward, kneeling on the rug, gently taking Lena’s busy hands into her own. “Lena, I’m here.”
Lena paused, leaving the remaining tapes next to the TV, taking a slow breath as she dropped back to sit on the floorboards instead. “I just didn’t expect to feel this way.”
“Feel what way?”
Lena stared down at the floor, not quite ready to look Kara in the eye. “I was so young. There’s so much I don’t remember.”
Kara took a seat in front of her, still holding Lena’s hands. She waited patiently - silent, and comforting, letting Lena take her time to think or talk as she wished.
“In one of the tapes,” Lena said, her voice a touch deeper than normal, “She sang an Irish lullaby. I haven’t heard it in decades. The melody slammed back into me.”
“I’m sure it was lovely,” Kara said.
“She spoke to me. In Irish. She spoke to me, and I didn’t understand what she was saying,” Lena said, frustrated. “And in the tape, I spoke back, and I didn’t understand what I was saying. It’s all gone.”
And that’s when Kara stiffened, a bolt of lightning running through her as she understood. It was different in her case, of course - she had once thought herself the last to speak a language, carrying a dead culture in her soul. Through sheer luck, she was able to get her father, her mother, her people back - but the feeling of being orphaned, she understood, if in a different way than Lena. “The Luthors don’t speak Irish,” Kara replied.
“Language attrition is common in children who stop speaking their first language before the age of 12,” Lena said softly, in a tone that made Kara realize that Lena must’ve read about this a dozen times before. “I didn’t know what I was losing until it was too late.”
“Lena,” Kara said, leaning forward to give the brunette a hug. “I’m so sorry.”
“I know it sounds so silly,” Lena said. “It’s not like I have much need to speak Irish.”
“That doesn’t mean you can’t mourn what you’ve lost,” Kara said, thinking back to a million conversations she’d had with Kelly about her own traumas, even if later they were reversed by fate. “You can still be sad about it.”
Lena sighed, melting into Kara’s arms, and Kara felt relieved. They sat, wrapped in each other’s embrace and breathing in the peace of the evening, Kara rubbing gently at Lena’s back until Lena was ready. “Well, I can put the rest of this away,” Lena said, pulling back, her voice steady for the first time that evening. “We can start cooking dinner.”
Kara nodded, watching as Lena gazed back - a bit mournful, a bit sad, but a certain lightness compared to before. “If it helps,” Kara said gently, with one last thought, “I can learn Irish with you? It may not be like before, but sometimes getting some of the pieces back can mean something.”
Lena looked at her for a moment, before smiling. “I’d like that.”

Control
Kara has no idea how things got out of control so quickly.
One minute, they were sitting in their booth at Al’s, downing their second round of drinks while chatting animatedly about that time when Alex accidentally ordered pizzas loaded with anchovies, and the next, tables were getting pushed over, chairs were flying and the entire bar was engulfed in chaos.
As with most bar fights, it’s completely unclear what or who started it. Kara briefly considers simply using her superspeed to subdue everyone enough to put an end to it, but then she remembers she’s blown out her powers earlier that day.
A bottle comes flying toward her and she ducks just in time. And then, someone grabs her shoulder and spins her around, but before Kara can even get a good look at who grabbed her, Lena is there, blocking a fist that was meant for Kara’s nose, and then throwing one clean punch to knock out Kara’s would-be attacker.
Shocked, all Kara can do in the moment is nod, but Lena is already taking a step toward a large burly dude who has Alex pinned to the bar. Lena yells to get his attention and then punches him out as well, though it takes more than one swing for him to go down.
Eventually, things die down. Kara assumes that whoever started the fight is either out cold or has left the bar amid the mayhem.
“You alright?” Alex asks, concern for her sister evident in her face.
“I’m fine. Not a scratch. Thanks to Lena.”
They both turn towards where Lena is currently checking on Brainy, who seems a little shell shocked by what he has just witnessed.
“Yeah, what’s up with that? I had no idea she even knew how to throw a punch.”
Kara wants to nod, but then a series of images flash through her mind: Lena punching Beth Breen unconscious while Kara was being attacked by the nanobots, Lena knocking out Eve Tessmacher in Kaznia, Lena aiming right for Lex’s chin, twice.
“I’m going to go take her home,” Kara declares, knowing that all she wants to do right now is gather Lena up in her arms and hug her.
Alex nods. “Alright. You do that. I’ll call J’onn to help me sort out this mess.”
It takes a little while before Kara can convince Lena to leave, to let Alex take care of the aftermath of the fight, but eventually, they make it back to Kara’s apartment. As soon as they get inside, Kara makes a beeline for the freezer compartment of her fridge and pulls out a bag of frozen peas.
“Here. For your knuckles.”
Kara holds out the bag to Lena who raises an eyebrow. “Peas?”
“I, um, I don’t usually need ice packs myself, so, this is all I have.”
Lena smirks. “Oh I get that. I’m just surprised you have…frozen vegetables in your apartment.”
“I do eat green things sometimes, you know?” Kara retorts, rolling her eyes.
She takes a few steps and sits down on her couch next to Lena. Gently, Kara takes both of Lena’s hands and inspects them. Her knuckles are red and a little swollen, and there is a small cut that’s already scabbed over. Kara shakes her head and looks up.
“You didn’t have to do that, you know?”
“Yes, I did,” Lena cuts her off. “I’m not going to let anyone hurt my friends, hurt you.”
Kara presses a careful kiss to Lena’s injured hands and then rests the bag of peas on them.
“You, Lena Luthor, are my hero.”
“And you, Kara Danvers, are a sap.”
“Maybe. But I’m the sap who loves you.”
At that, Lena ducks forward a little and captures Kara’s lips in a soft kiss.
“I love you, too.

Forget Me Not
A Luthor and a Super Walk Into a Bar (series)
Pairing: Supercorp/Kara Danvers x Lena Luthor
Words: 3.4k
Summary: An AU based on the movie "The Vow".
A/N: This is very sad, but it has a happy ending!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The quarter wobbles, and then topples as it no longer has the force to continue spinning. It comes to a stop, laying flat on the counter next to the empty glass.
"Another?"
Lena looks to the bartender who had pointed to the glass. She nods silently, flicking the quarter making it spin once again on the counter. The bartender walks away quickly with the glass. He returns, placing her drink back where he found it, then he sets a glass of water next to it. He means well, Lena reminds herself as she ignores the water. She brings the glass to her lips and takes a long sip. It burns on the way down, but that's why she likes it. It's her third of the night, and Lena doesn't plan to slow down anytime soon. She flicks the quarter again, watching as it spins traveling a few inches across the bar then falling.
Lena's left thumb twists and presses against the engagement ring still occupying her finger. She still wears it everyday, even if seeing it causes her heart to break everytime. She can't bring herself to take it off. 'Maybe it would be easier if she were dead,' Lena thinks to herself. The thought makes her sick to her stomach, and she immediately scolds herself for it. Even through her pain, she knows she is lucky her fiancé is still breathing. 'A world where Kara Danvers doesn't exist is a world where I don't either,' Lena reminds herself. Still, over a year later, and the Luthor can't figure out how to mourn someone who isn't dead. She flicks the quarter again.
"Hey"
Lena feels a soft hand on her shoulder and turns to see Alex and Maggie standing behind her. She smiles, "Hi," is all she can whisper as the two hug her. It has been a while since she has seen either of them. She really misses them both. Alex sits down next to her, while Maggie goes and claims a table a little further into the bar.
The two sit in silence for a moment. Alex takes a deep breath deciding to break the ice, "How are you?" The concern on her face genuine. The elder Danvers reaches a tucks a stray strand of hair behind Lena's ear. The younger girl leans into the touch ever so slightly before pulling away. She misses how Alex used to comfort her. Alex always made sure that Lena knew she was her little sister as much as Kara is. That seems like lifetimes ago.
Taking another mouthful from her glass, the Luthor holds back tears as she responds, "Probably as well as you would expect." She flicks the quarter again, watching it spin.
A quarter.
If she thinks about it long enough, it still makes her angry.
Lena lost her family. The only family she had. The family she fought for. The family she found with Kara.
Kara. Her Kara.
She lost her Kara.
Because of a quarter.
Lena knows it's more complicated than that, but she always finds herself here. Blaming a coin for losing everything.
It's been 1 year 5 months 2 weeks and a day since it happened. It was an accident. A freak accident, Lena knows that. However, she can't stop herself from blaming a freaking coin. Kara was driving home from work. Some teenaged boys were messing around, throwing quarters at each other's cars while driving. One of them swerved into oncoming traffic. To avoid him, Kara swerved into a ditch.
She woke up in the hospital two days later. She was physically healthy aside from a few cuts and bruises. Mentally, though she was not so lucky. When Kara woke up, Lena breathed a sigh of relief before having her heart ripped out. The blonde had no idea who Lena was. She didn't remember Lena or the past three years they had been together or their wedding that was meant to be in 5 months. All because of a stupid quarter.
Lena flicks the quarter again. "You know what today is?" she asks as the two watch the coin spin. The silence sits between the two. They both know what today is, or what it was supposed to be. Alex whispers a quiet yes. The pain evident in her voice. Lena may have lost her entire world, but she is not the only one hurting. She knows that. "It's our anniversary," Lena says having to force the words around the lump in her throat. "But it's not," her voice cracks. Alex brings her hand to Lena's shoulder pulling her into an embrace. She continues despite her tears, "We should be celebrating. We should have been happily married for a year. I should have bought her flowers and a really sappy card and taken her to a fancy dinner and ordered those god awful potstickers she loves so much after." They both smile around the pain, tears falling anyway. "But I'm sitting here alone..." the Luthor pauses as she tries to find the words to describe this agony. Like she has a lot this past year, she falls short. "She is supposed to be mine," the younger woman whispers.
Alex pulls her closer letting Lena hurt for a moment. She gently rubs a hand up and down her other little sister's back, whispering comfortingly to her. After a moment, Lena sits back up. She wipes away her tears. Lena normally might have been embarrassed that she just broke down in public, but tonight she can't bring herself to care. It wouldn't be the first time she cried in this bar.
When Kara first woke up, the doctors were optimistic that her memory would return with time and a little prompting. Everyone tried to help. They showed Kara pictures and told her stories, but Lena remained a stranger in the room full of her family. Kara remembered everyone else; she knew everyone else before she had met Lena. Kara was the one who had introduced everyone to the Luthor. Kara loved her first; the rest followed adopting her into the family as though it was the most natural thing. But now, it was Kara that needed to learn to love Lena. She tried; everyone knows she tried. But one day, Lena came home from work to find all of Kara's things moved out of their shared apartment. She also found about a dozen missed calls and messages from Alex trying to explain what happened. Sitting on the table next to the bed is a note with Lena's name on it.
"Sweet Lena, I will never have the words to form the apology I owe you, but I will try anyway. I'm so sorry. I know that my being here is hurting you, and I can't watch this destroy you anymore. I want only the best for you, but I'm beginning to believe that my presence in your life will never grant that. You offer so much love, and all I give in return is pain. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to move on. You deserve someone who loves you as much as you love me. I hope, with my entire heart, that you find them. Sincerely, Kara"
That note brought the end of Lena's happiness, but she would never let Kara know. She doesn't want someone else. She wants Kara, but she knew Kara was probably hurting just as much as she was... maybe even worse. Lena will love Kara forever, but one of them needed to go. Lena was used to being alone; Kara never had to be. In the Luthor's mind, the decision was already made. If Kara wanted out, Lena wouldn't stop her. She wants what is best for her, so she decided to honor her wishes. Lena kept her distance, even if that meant distancing herself from everyone she loved. She would do it. She would do anything, for Kara.
"How is she?" the Luthor asks. Every now and again, Lena will meet Alex for lunch or dinner and ask about Kara. It hurts everytime, but she needs to check on her. She needs to know she did the right thing by staying away. She needs to know if Kara is happy. She knows that will never go away.
Alex's lips form a tight smile, "She's ok." Lena sees right through the older Danver's short answer. "She's supposed to meet you here tonight isn't she?" the Luthor asks with a sad smile. Alex holds her breath and nods once. A familiar ache grips Lena's chest. She nods and finishes her drink signaling the bartender to bring another. Her eyes glass over, and she is losing the fight to hold back another wave of tears, "Does she ever ask?" Lena knows the answer before Alex's silence confirms it. Part of her is glad Kara doesn't think of her, it means that she is moving on, maybe even happy. The other part of her though is left in devastation by Kara's indifference. The latter takes over for a moment as a tear rolls down her cheek. She quickly swats it away and flicks the quarter again.
Alex sighs defeatedly, "We can go to another bar." It's meant to be a peace offering, but Lena doesn't want it. She hasn't cried herself to sleep for a year and a half, so everyone she loves has to feel guilty for moving on.
"Alexandra Danvers," Lena's tone is the only evidence needed to understand she means business, "if you change your plans for me, not only will I be pissed, but you will feel the full power of my wrath for the rest of your life." Alex laughs at the threat and jokingly counters, "Come on Luthor, don't you think you're overreacting just a bit." The two smile and Alex grabs one of Lena's hands, "Are you sure?" She asks gently.
Lena offers the most reassuring smile she can manage, which still isn't much. "Yes, I'm sure," squeezing the older Danvers' hand. "Now go sit with your wife," she nods to Maggie sitting alone at a table, "enjoy the night. I want you to."
Alex wraps her arms around Lena holding her tightly. "I love you," she says as they pull away. Ache fills Lena's heart, as she is made aware of how long it's been since she's heard those three words. The ache is replaced with warmth for a moment, "I love you too."
"Text me when you're ready to leave, I'll call you a cab," Alex clears her throat and crosses her arms when Lena rolls her eyes. "I mean it Luthor, I'm watching you. You want me to make him cut you off?" she threatens. Alex laughs and pats Lena's back when the younger woman grumbles, "fine." She watches Alex walk across the bar to join Maggie. Once there, Lena turns back to the bar where her fourth drink is waiting for her. She flicks the quarter and brings the glass to her lips.
Two drinks later, and Lena is happy to feel the desired effects. Her thought process starts to slow and her muscles begin to relax. The ache in her chest subsiding slightly as she stares at the ring on her left hand as she twists it. She relives the day she got it. She can almost pretend that the girl who gave it to her still remembers her. She can almost picture a wedding band next to it. Almost. She is focusing on the ring so much that the rest of the bar disappears. She doesn't see or hear the bartender who tries to ask her a question. She doesn't notice the other customers coming and going from the bar stools around her. She doesn't hear the front door opening and closing behind her, signaling the entrance and exits of other people. All she sees is her ring, the memories it holds, and the dream of a life it had once promised.
The sound of shattering glass breaks Lena's intense focus. Like everyone else in the bar, she looks in the direction of the disruptive noise. Unlike everyone else in the bar, she finds that the individual responsible for the disruption is staring right back at her. The brunette sobers.
From across the room, Kara is staring at Lena with eyes wide with shock. This isn't the first time the two have run into each other in public. Usually, Kara doesn't notice. Her eyes don't search for Lena the same way Lena's search for her. When she does notice, Kara waves apologetically before quickly leaving whatever space they are in.
This time is different though; Lena can tell immediately. Kara's expression is apologetic, but not helplessly so. It is knowing. Kara's eyes are wide with realization and a flood of tears. Lena thinks she sees recognition in those eyes somewhere, but she pushes away the hope. She doesn't want to let that pain in again.
Neither Lena or Kara break eye contact, but Lena can see Alex slowly approaching her sister cautiously in her peripheral vision. The older Danvers places a gentle hand on the blonde's shoulder effectively breaking her out of her thoughts. A sob escapes the blonde's lips. Kara closes the distance between them instantly. Before she can react, the blonde pulls Lena as close as possible, clutching her to her chest. Kara's tears soak Lena's shoulders, but she doesn't care. Despite trying to convince herself it's too good to be true, the Luthor clings to her fiancé.
With the workers' permission, Alex and Maggie help the two move to a private room in the back. They close the door behind Kara and Lena, giving them some space to work through whatever just happened.
Once alone, Kara's sobs grow even more desperate as she tries to utter apologies in between shallow breaths. "I'm so sorry! Lena I'm so so so so so sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry Lena! I'm so sorry!" she clings as tightly as she can to the shorter girl.
Lena is crying herself, but if nothing else, this past year has taught here how to put her emotions aside for Kara. She gently rubs her hands up and down the blonde's back. She wants to comfort her so she makes certain she doesn't cross any of the lines. She doesn't let her hands drop too low, or hold too tightly, or move too quickly. After a few more moments of Kara's desperate sobs, Lena speaks up. "Kara, why are you sorry? You have nothing to be sorry for," she tries to reassure, but Kara objects instantly.
"I forgot," the blonde's voice breaks with guilt. "I forgot, and you tried to help and I left you," she erupts into sobs again. "You needed me and I left you. Lena I left you. I hurt you. I'm so sorry, Lena. You loved me, and I hurt you. I'm so so sorry," Kara pulls away from the embrace, but doesn't let go of Lena.
Lena's eyes scan Kara's face a million times searching for the uncertainty that has plagued her nightmares for a year. When she finally does speak, it is barely a whisper, "you remember?" The Luthor is convinced she is dreaming; she is not ready for the heartbreak morning will surely bring.
"Yes," Kara cries, "we're supposed to be married Lena... but... I... we... I'm so sorry. We're supposed to be happy, but I hurt you, and I'm so sorry!" Lena reaches up and wipes away as many of her love's tears as she can manage. They are quickly replaced with more. "I'm sorry I left you and hurt you and forgot you, Lena. I'm sorry Lena," Kara hiccups as she tries to regain control of her breathing. The blonde pulls away from Lena, and the brunette feels panic suffocate her at the retreat. She chokes on the only thought worse than remaining unremembered by Her fiancé: Kara remembering and still not wanting her.
Lena prepares for rejection as she waits for Kara to speak again. She is so small arms wrapped around herself, tears streaming down her cheeks, some even catching on her glasses. Kara takes a deep breath and looks to the ceiling, "I know I left you. I broke your heart and left." Her face twist in agony as she holds herself tightly so as to not to reach out for the other girl. "I know I told you to move on," Kara's throat closes around the words.
It's unfair. The blonde knows that. She walked out on Lena. That was her choice, but the consequences didn't fall on Kara. They fell on Lena. She is the one who had her heart broken. She is the one who has been alone all this time. Lena didn't deserve this, but she never got the choice. She deserved the choice. Still deserves a choice. The blonde knows that she owes Lena so much more, but all she has is this choice. And it's Lena's. Kara still refuses to look at the younger woman. She knows if she does, she will be selfish. She will beg her to stay. She will pull her close, and kiss her, and she won't let go ever again. But that's not her choice; it's Lena's. So she twists her hands in her own shirt, and tries to find the right words.
"I know I told you to move on," Kara's throat closes around the words. "You don't owe me anything, I know that. So if you did... move on... I get it." Her voice is breaking. Every fiber of her being screaming for her to not let Lena go, but she stayed back and continued. "If there’s someone else, I understand..." she kept shrinking into herself. To Lena, she looks small and hurt, but stubborn in a selfless way. "I won't get in the way; I just need you to know I'm sorry," Kara finally looks to Lena. Her words sound too much like the note Lena found; she feels the panic and pain and fear of rejection all over again. "I love you, Lena. More than I can ever show you. You deserve to be happy, even if it's not with me," Kara takes a deep breath. "I'll go... if that’s what you want, I'll-"
The blonde is cut off by the brunette's lips covering hers. Lena kisses her fiercely holding the blonde's cheeks with her hands. Kara is stunned motionless, frozen for a moment before the tension in her chest snaps. With a whimper, Kara returns the kiss, wrapping her arms around Lena and holding her as close as possible. Tears cover both of their faces.
It's too good to be true. That's what Lena's brain keeps telling her. Lena deepens the kiss, holding Kara tighter; she has waited for this moment for over a year. She had given up hope that it would happen at all. With Kara in her arms, she finally feels complete again. She doesn't want to break the kiss, but they both need to breathe. Their lips separate; both miss the contact instantly. The pair attempt to chase each other's lips, but the need to breathe gets in the way.
“I want you, Kara.” Lena can’t bring herself to look into Kara’s eyes, so she closes her own, trying to let this pure relief beat back the pain in her chest. “I missed you so much," heavy tears rain down her face. She presses her forehead to Kara’s, breathing her in. Lena sighs stringing together a line of “I love you”’s, repeating those three words over and over like a prayer. She only stops when Kara interrupts her with a kiss.
It's not a long kiss, more like a prolonged peck really. "I love you too," Kara breathes against Lena's lips. The brunette's heart soars; warmth spreads across her entire body. She had been sure she would never feel this way again. She burrows into the crook of Kara's neck. "Take me home," Kara whispers into raven hair. The shorter woman nods frantically. Since the accident, Lena has hated that apartment. She couldn't step foot in a single room without a flood of memories with Kara and the ache they bring. She avoids the place as much as possible. Now she barely comes home to sleep before leaving again.
However this time, Lena is happy to go back to her apartment because Kara will be there, and that's enough.
Lena Luthor x  Fem!R//Word Count: 2, 546
-------------------------------------------------------
"Give our children your dark-bright eyes or your enchanted smile. So that even when we are gone, the world will find within them all the reasons I loved you." -Nizar Qabbani
Kelly put glass of water on the coffee table in front of you and sat next to you on the couch. She put an arm around you, rubbing your back and shoulders, trying to provide any kind of comfort she could.
It had been late at night when you had come knocking at her door. From the moment Kelly had opened it she knew something had happened. Your eyes were swollen?, red and you could barely say a word. You were holding a small bag of luggage beside you with a trembling hand. She practically pulled you inside by pure instinct without asking any of the questions that were swirling in her mind to put you in a safe space. It was her number one priority and she wasn't going to leave your side until she was sure you were alright.
When you were calm enough to speak, Kelly found herself shocked by what had made you come to her in the middle of the night. You and Lena had broken up.
Kelly had known you since she had arrived to National City to help her brother. It had been years ago but she still remembered you and Lena together and how happy you had seemed back then. You were probably one of the most estable relationships she had seen among her friends and it surprised her to find out how things had developed between you two to want to end it so abruptly.
Of all your friends, she was probably the only one who could grasp what you were going through and she promised you she was going to help you sort things out.
"Alex is out in a mission, she'll be back home in a couple of days so you can stay without problem. The spare room is ready." She said as she kept rubbing your back and shoulders. She could only imagine how tired yo would be after what had happened.
"I can't stay." Your voice came out hoarse and in a whisper.
"C'mon, you know I won't let you go like this. It's late, we can get to the problem solving tomorrow."
"No, I…I." You swallowed, gathering yourself as best as you could. "I can't stay in National City."
That took Kelly by surprise. "Let's not rush things, alright?"
"No, Kelly, I can't." You turned to look at her so she could see the determination in your eyes.
"(Y/N), I know this may seem difficult but you need to talk to Lena first. I think- ."
"I'm pregnant." You blurted, leaving Kelly with an open mouth.
There was a moment of hesitation in which Kelly didn't know what to do first. If jump in excitement about the new member of the Superfriends family or hug you because this seemed to trouble you more than she would have expected. Kelly opted for the second option and you let her embrace you, she pulled you into her arms as you let another handful of tears roll down your cheeks.
You would remember that first night after leaving Lena as one one of the most painful ones of your life. Your last conversation with Lena, the way you had left her apartment with a single suitcase in your hand, reaching for someone that could help you, and leaving National City behind to start a new life. Everything had seemed too dark and painful but you had something to pull you forward, someone that was going to change everything.
And so, years later you would find yourself stroking a little head full of black hair with your hand while you held his little body with the other against your chest. Little (Y/S/N), your son, was a little more than four years old. He was the light of your life and you loved him with all your might.
Since you had left National City, it had always been the two of you. From the nine months you carried him in your womb until that moment in your life, you had been inseparable. You had been afraid at first, for him and for yourself. Strangers in a new town, trying to make your own home, with no idea of how family was supposed to work. Things were not perfect, but he didn't need them to be and neither did you. You had made it and you had made something beautiful.
It was also true that you had your own regrets. There were moments when you thought a little too much about the past. About how things could have ended up if you had taken better, or less reckless, decisions. You feared the what ifs, the maybes, and the past that had been left that night at Kelly's door. And one particular ghost still haunted your mind and your heart.
Every time you looked at your son, you looked at her. Black hair, green eyes, and a young mind as sharp as a knife. Now I know whose genetics are stronger, you had thought to yourself with a smile so many times. Of course, if you looked at him you could also recognize yourself. (Y/S/N) was the little perfect combination of the best of you.
"She will have your nose, I'm sure." Lena had told you once, delighted at the thought of having a little you running around the house.
She had been sitting on the floor behind you, with her head placed above your shoulder as you both read the required papers to start the medical process that would make you both mothers. You had leaned back, humming in thought. Your fingers moved through pages and pages of information, trying to grasp as much as you could, amidst the distraction that supposed Lena's breath so close to your neck.
"What if she is a he?" You had questioned with a little smile.
"Then we'll have to think of more names." She had placed a kiss close to your ear and then had helped you read the rest.
It had been years since you had last seen her but there she was, with you, with him, even if you couldn't name her. You had said as much about her as you had been able to to your son when he was old enough to question you about it. Why he didn't a father? Or another mother? Two parents like most kids like him? Because his Mama wasn't ready to come to them yet, you had said, but that one day she was going to, and it pained you to realize how much you wanted for that wishful thing to happen too. And it was not long before it became true.
"(Y/N)?"
The phone had almost slipped from your hand after hearing her voice after so much time.
(Y/S/N) had turned his head away from the TV on the living room to watch you, trying to imagine who was talking on the other side of the line to make his mom make that funny face.
"Lena?" You had answered with a shaking voice.
"It's been a while."
The conversation started as it usually did, with people who used to know everything about each other and ended up becoming complete strangers. An exchange of words, questions and answers that seemed to lead to nothing but the abyss that now separated you from your past selves.
"I'm sorry." You heard her say on the other side with a hesitant tone so rare in her it surprised you even more. "I know I should've called you a long time ago."
"Yeah, you should have." You tried to keep your wounded heart from spilling as you looked at your son.
"Would it be too late if I ask , can we see each other again?"
You sat in the corner of the coffee shop with a warm cup between your fingers, sipping your beverage as you waited. You were nervous. You kept bouncing your leg and looking at the door until you saw her come through it.
It reminded you the very first time you had sat together, in that little coffee shop across the street from the office. You had been dreading the moment she would have to cross the door to meet with you, that if she even thought you were worth her time, after you had asked her to have a coffee with you. You could still remember the little smile playing across her lips when she accepted the invitation and the way your stomach had fluttered when she grabbed your arm, promising to met you after work. Time had passed and there had been no sign of her yet. You feared or a moment she had forgotten, and if that was the case you would not hold it against her. She was a busy woman, what was a coffee date compared to the empire she had to keep from crumbling. Still, you waited and, against all hope and all odds she had come.
Time seemed to freeze when your eyes found each other. She was all goddess looking even after the years you had spent away.
When you finally settled at the table, words seemed to be lost for both of you. Small talk was painfully dull. Another reminder of all that had been lost between you two.
"Lena?" You held your gaze towards her and finally asked her. A question too obvious, maybe, but necessary nevertheless. "Why are we here?"
She smiled, sheepishly and not without a hint of regret in her emerald eyes. "'Cause I was wrong".
The moment you had crossed her door to never come back again was the moment Lena knew what true and complete loneliness meant. An unyielding emptiness filled by shadows and rumors of what life she had with you and she had no one else to blame but herself. She had put her company above you, trying to make it the force of good the world needed and wanted, that she forgot you also needed her and wanted her and loved her.
And when Lena had realized her mistakes, when she had tried to reach you, to bring you back, you were so long gone and lost from her sight that it made her want to destroy everything she had worked so hard to build if that meant she would have you again.
"I'm sorry." Lena's eyes were full of regret.
"Don't be." You shook your head. "You were out there saving the world, trying to change your family legacy and I…I didn't want to hold you back."
"I don't think I would have done most of what I did if it wasn't for you." Her lips curled in a little smile. "We did many great things together."
"Yes, we did." The image of your son flashed through your mind and you swallowed hard. "One in particular, I think you need to know."
You stood in the sidewalk among the rest of parents that waited patiently for the school bell ring. You had not dared to answer Lena's questions about where you were going and why you were there after your encounter but you knew she had surely figured it out by now as you watched her fidget with her hands. Instinctively you reached for them, a gesture that had been so common between you, in an attempt to soothe her and yourself. You held hands as you kept waiting.
"How is he?" Lena asked, her thumb caressing the back of your hand in a nervous tick.
"He's very smart, first of his class." Lena raised her brows in surprise. "He likes big animals, wants a bike for Christmas, and wants to be an astronaut before becoming an Olympic athlete, in all sports." You sighed with a smile.
"Wonderful." A wave of warmth rushed through her, feeling herself proud of the little boy she was about to meet, and a moment of silence passed before she dared to ask. "Why did you never tell me about him?"
"I didn't know how." You took a deep breath. "Back then, you were so focused on being a CEO, on working for the good of the people. I saw how much it took from you but I also understood how big that responsibility was. It's true, what I said before. I didn't want to hold you back. I didn't want us to be a distraction, not particularly after our last fight."
"I'm sorry I ever made you feel that way." Lena turned to look at you with pleading eyes. "I never wanted you to face this alone and I'm here to amends…If you let me."
You couldn't say more as the bell finally rang. You could feel your heart pounding hard against your chest and you squeezed Lena's hand.
"Ready to meet him?" You managed to said.
"I am." Lena nodded.
You headed inside the building with the rest of the parents, ready to pick your son. You reached her classroom in no time, greeting his teacher and asking if your son had behaved during class. His teacher was all smiles when she told you your son had been in nothing but his best behavior. Then she called your son and you watched from the door as he stepped out of his little chair, rushing towards you. You picked him up, holding him in your arms, and thanked the teacher before turning around to leave.
You asked him about his day and the things he had learned that day. He replied with nothing but excitement and you were happy to hear him.
"Hey, I bring a friend today with me." You said after he had finished. "Would you like to meet her?"
"Yeah." He replied with a smile.
You walked through the hallway and there, sitting in a bench, was Lena waiting patiently for you. She rose from her seat once she saw you approach and her face couldn't hide her awe. As if she was seeing a true miracle, she didn't know what to do or what to say, until you were close enough.
"Hi." She said wearing that beautiful smile of hers.
"Hi." Your son responded with his little voice.
"My name is Lena, nice o meet you."
"You're pretty." He said, making you and Lena chuckle.
"What do we say when we meet new people?" You reminded your son.
"I'm (Y/S/N). Nice to meet you, Lena."
"Good boy." You said kissing his temple.
Lena took a look at him, seeing herself in that little face and there was no denying he was hers and yours. A pang of regret struck her heart for all the years she had not known about him. If she had only called after you, if she had called you, if she had tried to contact you sooner rather than later, how different things would have been for you three. But she was there, with you and your son, and that was all that mattered to her.
This time, she promised herself, she was going to do whatever that was in her hands to make it up to you and she wasn't going to waste another moment.
Drink Blink to me only with thine eyes, And I will pledge with mine; Or leave a kiss within the cup, And I'll not ask for wine. The thirst that from the soul doth rise Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove's nectar sup, I would not change for thine.
Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes" is a popular old song, the lyrics of which are the poem "To Celia" by the English playwright Ben Jonson, first published in 1616.
Lena
Tumblr media
Kara felt disoriented waking up. It wasn't because the place she woke up to was new to her, which it was. No, it was because of the feeling in her chest that hadn't left her since her dance with Lena.
Kara stared into the ceiling trying to find an answer, a name for it, to no avail. She felt lost and confused, with no clear idea of what to think and how to proceed.
Kara took a deep breath, if there was something she reminded herself of recently, it’s that she was a scientist, and a scientist knows how to do their research. With determination she rose up from her bed and headed to face the new day. She would figure it out, she must.
The feeling came back all at once when she first spotted Lena after waking up. Just knowing she could see her first thing each morning already brought her so much joy. The oversized shirt she was wearing looked so good on her, she wondered why Lena even bothered with all those fancy clothes. Then again she looked really good in all of them as well. Really, Lena just looked good in everything, she can really pull anything off.
The feeling intensified when she learned Lena had been up longer than she realised, busing herself making breakfast for her so she would feel more at home. Kara nearly cried and went to hug her from behind. Letting herself bask in her smell as she buried herself in her neck.
"Not that I'm not enjoying it Kara, but I do need to get back to the eggs if you don't want them burned." Lena said after a short while.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Kara asked as she pulled back.
"It's eggs and bacon, there's not much to be done. Plates."
"Okay." Kara nodded and took out two plates to put next to Lena.
"Thanks. Plus I already cut all the vegetables and put them in the mixture, so it's all pretty much done."
"Lena Luthor, did you put vegetables in my eggs?"
"I did." She smiled with a raised brow.
"That is evil."
"I even put two different kinds of bell pepper."
"That is very evil. I might have to stop you."
"Oh, is that right?" Lena asked as she plated the food.
"Yeah, I'm not sure if you know, but I'm actually a superhero."
"Are you now? Prey tell, what kind of superhero are you?"
"The heroic kind."
"Well, I am quite evil. So you might have to stop me." Lena smiled and bit into her eggs.
"I will." Kara really couldn't take her eyes off of her.
"Kara," she bit her smiling lip."You might want to eat your evil eggs before they get cold." She said and lightly shoved Kara's Plate in her direction.
She spent most of her day unpacking the rest of her things. Lena joined her after a few hours of working in her home office. She said she came to help get it done faster, even though it had the opposite effect. Kara ended up spending most of her time trying her best to find the most ridiculous puns and jokes in the hopes to make Lena smile, it was worth it every time.
It was evening and she hadn't gotten closer to figuring out the feeling in her chest. She knew it had to do with Lena, not that she had any doubt about it. But then again Lena was magical, beside the fact that she was literally magical, she had this magnetic aura. Kara couldn't take her eyes off of her whenever she was in the room.
They were best friends, of course, it could be that. They were also about to raise children together, it could be related to that. She thought about asking Alex or Eliza about it, but then again they only raised children with their romantic partner. She wasn't sure if it was that thought or the romantic comedy they were watching that made her wonder about the future, would Lena seek out a romantic partner?
The thought made her stomach twist.
Selfish as it sounded, she wanted to be the only partner in Lena's life. She hated herself for thinking that, but she promised herself that if Lena wanted to find someone she would never stop her.
Images of a faceless man and Lena appeared in her mind; walking hand in hand on the street, making Lena laugh over dinner instead of her, taking her spot on the couch to snuggle Lena close like she did, caressing her hair like she was doing now, making her know that she was the most important person in your world, getting to stare into her bright green eyes for as long as they wanted, kiss her…
She saw that shadowy faceless person kissing Lena, holding her gently in his arms, their lips dancing in a swirl of passion. She felt the hint of her heat vision burning around her eyes, trying to close them only made the vision more vivid, more real. She tried to forget about him. Maybe Lena would be content without him, she was already making her laugh over any meal, snuggled her close at every opportunity, held her hand sometimes as they walked, sure they didn't–
It was the thought of the kiss that sparked a new image for her, the same intense kiss from before only the faceless man was nowhere in sight, she was kissing Lena in his stead. She could almost feel the heat of her tongue and the softness of her cheek as she let her thumb slowly caress it. She felt her body getting hotter along with a new feeling in her lower abdomen. She shifted abruptly in her seat, making her break out of her day dream as Lena's face turned to her.
"Are you okay?" She asked in a gentle voice and Kara was stunned by it. Her heartbeat skyrocketed as she stared at the lips she just imagined ravishing.
"Yes," she lied. Her voice came out in a much higher pitch than usual tone.
"Are you sure?" Lena put her hand on Kara’s. Kara could feel each point of contact burning into her skin.
She took a deep breath and nodded. "Just tired."
"You want to go to sleep?"
"No, it's okay. We can finish the movie first," she assured her.
"Okay." Lena nodded. Squeezing her hand briefly before turning back to the film.
Kara had no clue what happened in the rest of the movie, she wasn't even sure what they were watching. All her thoughts were directed to the woman laying in her arms.
She didn't want a shadowy faceless man to date Lena. Not because she was afraid to lose some best friend's moments, no. She realised that all the facts pointed at one conclusion.
She wanted Lena.
