Ah, the a-ra-'vah 注专讘讛, or willow, holds a special place in the rituals of Sukkot.
On the surface, the willow is the most unassuming of the Four Species. While the etrog is fragrant and the palm branch is sturdy, the willow is leafy and lacks scent.
It withers quickly, reminding us of the fleeting nature of life. And yet, despite鈥攐r perhaps because of鈥攊ts vulnerability, the willow serves as a powerful symbol of humility and the need for unity.
In Jewish tradition, the Four Species are thought to represent different types of individuals within the community. The willow, lacking both taste and smell, symbolizes those who neither possess Torah knowledge nor engage in good deeds.
But here's the catch鈥攄espite its seeming insignificance, the ritual of the Four Species would be incomplete without it. This underscores the idea that every member, regardless of their level of religious knowledge or good deeds, is essential for the unity and completeness of the community.
During Sukkot, as we wave the Four Species in all directions, we're reminded that we are all bound together in our vulnerabilities and our strengths.
So the next time you hold that simple willow in your hands, know that it carries a profound lesson in humility, unity, and the beautiful complexity of community life 馃尶馃崑馃尨

the church of yoldath aloho (the mother of god) in hah in the historical tur 'abin region, located within modern-day turkey. it's thought to have been built around 450 ad and expanded by byzantine emperor justinian in the 6th century, with several additions made throughout the years. the square-shaped dome on the top is unique to the region.
according to local tradition, it was built on a site where twelve kings, following a star to bethlehem, were inspired to do so after witnessing a miracle which proved to them mary's holiness.
