Garbage Pail Gatsby

Recently discovered notes revealed that F. Scott Fitzgerald planned on ending his final novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, with the line "Now THAT was one helluva tycoon!"

In the fall of 2018, I visited the grave of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The cool bright “Football weather” that sets up Fitzgerald’s Ivy League nostalgia so many times (i.e. “Yale is November crisp”) was out in favour of gusty, cold Chesapeake rains.

Fitzgerald’s Ivy League sentimentality is weird considering he was a midwestern goon who flunked out of Princeton, I know , though . . . it’s not about books or scholarship: it is about being young, about getting away from stern parents and discovering women in the sway of jazz music and alcohol. There’s nothing to not love about that.

The beauty was in the promise of autumn rather than spring. Of becoming so sotted with Keats’s La Belle Dame Sans Merci that you start to skip class. That you allow yourself to be rules by the depressive force of alcohol until, one day, years later, practically embalmed, you’re not wanted anywhere because everyone heard the rumour that you took a rich person’s watch and dunked it in a pot of tomato sauce.

Fitzgerald’s Princeton is different than Waugh’s Oxford, in that regard. It is less the arcadian return to innocence and more the fun of losing your innocence. War and Paris come later.

At the age of forty-four, F. Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack at his home in Hollywood, just three weeks after Pearl Harbor. They say he had spent the year sober and he left an almost-finished manuscript of a fifth novel. He was buried in Rockville, Maryland, because that is the ancestral home of his father’s family, including his namesake Francis Scott Key, composer of the Star Spangled Banner. The only literary friend who attended his funeral was Dorothy Parker who said “you poor son a bitch”, quoting the famous line from Gatsby, when she saw how few people were there for him. His daughter, Scottie, had his and Zelda’s gravestone moved to the Old Mary Church cemetery on a busy street corner in the densely populated Baltimore-Washington suburb.

His grave was well visited, people leaving copies of his books by the upward facing grey slate stone, inscribed with Gatsby’s famous end-flourish. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

I had just read a collection of Fitzgerald’s Pat Hobby stories, which I guess are his last completed literary works. Pat Hobby, is the thinly disguised Fitzgerald, a woebegone Hollywood writer at the whims of powerful people whose machinations he gets to observe from his broken vantage. The stories are often quite funny but the aura of them is terribly sad. Fitzgerald in Hollywood, to me, is one of those beautiful exile stories, like Ovid on the coast of Romania.

Those stories are dripping with flop sweat. It’s like you can feel him white knuckling the sentences, just hoping he might find the graceful syntax that defined his best work. At the time, he was completely forgotten and those few who did remember him remembered him as a short story writer from twenty years before.

The legacy of Gatsby would only really start to ramp up in the the 1950s.

In a gesture of my own retirement, I left my personal, annotated copy of Gatsby on his grave in the driving rain. The gusting winds shook a black oak trees above and it scattered acorns everywhere. I picked up a few and those acorns are I still keep one in a prominent place on my nightstand.

I also gave one to the living writer I admired the most.

“I’d like to put my heart in one of those black acorns and safely bury it in the mountain hills near my hometown.”

It always freaked me out when a priest had something which seemed like a trifling secular pleasure, like a copy of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, a bag of Chips Ahoy cookies, or a Leonardo DiCaprio tie-in copy of The Great Gatsby.

“That is my favorite novel”, father Brendan said; “that or Brideshead Revisited.”

I stumbled over quoting from This Side of Paradise, something about having enough doubt to strive to stay in tune.

He said “that sounds perfectly effulgent” perfectly mimicking a pretentious party guest from the same novel.

Of course, I don’t really know if Fitzgerald’s syntax was any better than George Eliot’s or Thomas Pynchon’s for that matter. I guess it’s the syntax that I grooved to the best so it feels the best to me. The way George Strait feels like a better country singer than Garth Brooks.

I think I have a handle on this.

If The Great Gatsby was an episode Reba, Nick would be Reba and Gatsby would be Barbara Jean.

In the Garbage Pail Kids version of Gatsby, they are called the Great Ghastly, Daisy Puke-Cannon, Nerd Carroway, Hoardin' Jordan, Girdle Wilson and Major Wolfsnot.

If the Great Gatsby was cast with Cereal Mascots:

Nick - Tony the Tiger

Fitzgerald could write the hell out of those “broken kiss” moments (the ones that are in every single Hallmark Christmas movie). That one between Monroe Stahr and Kathleen Moore in The Last Tycoon. Unsurprisingly, he was better with yearning anticipation than morning resolve.

I think I loved Rosemary Hoyt in Tender is the Night, who seemed the closest to the Fitzgeraldian manic pixie, but also the promise in Cecilia Brady, the narrator of Tycoon.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, when he was in Hollywood trying to write screenplays for immortal films like Broadway Sidewalk Sweep and The Song of Bronco McGee, was beset by a lack of confidence. The dissonance between the opulence of his best settings (which depression era readers had turned on and which) and his actual penuriousness was a devastating falsehood. Most of the money he made went to keeping Zelda in the asylum.

I guess all this puts into perspective my own feelings of diffidence when confronted with the choice between “bbq” and “sour cream and chive”. I may have lacked the vision but I certainly had that destructive laziness!

Urkel was my Gatsby.

I read that Fitzgerald’s grandson also attended Princeton and, like his grandfather, left to go to war (this time in Vietnam rather than in France). In the service, the grandson displayed a gift for languages and he learned Vietnamese and Irish Gaelic. Then, at the age of twenty-seven, near Diamond Head in Hawaii, the grandson committed suicide.

Human qualities can’t be cultured out of us. We can’t Beethoven away our jealousies, can’t Irigaray away our lust.

We can’t blame the scientific principles of light and surface refraction for what happened to Narcissus, try as we might.

Given the way the world is mapped out it is sometimes all one can do is say “I want to take another bite out of that fucking apple again, fool!”

I would hammer F. Scott Fitzgerald for so cruelly dismissing Ring Lardner (who I loved as I loved baseball and needed Lardner to be good to help support an argument I was once makingabout the worthwhileness of baseball literature) as one who “moved in the company of a few dozen illiterates playing a boy’s game.”

But, Fitzgerald was right. Lardner could have been a great writer but he wasted that on something which could never return any real interest in him. They say that Lardner shrivelled up when they fired the World Series but I think that’s because he discovered that the game was always and forever fixed.

Before I left home (for good?) I wrote someone seeking advice about how there was a good scene in The Last Tycoon where the Irving Thalberg character explains writing to the established author the studio has hired. It seems like the scene was meant to horrify Fitzgerald's old literary friend—the unschooled boor of a producer telling the Ivy educated author what writing was. But the haunting difficulty of the scene is discovering the producer was right and the writer was just wanting. I said this to tell this person, who I barely remembered from the pile on of people in my best times, to stop looking for validation and start looking for excellence.

If you want validation become a parking attendant, if you want to be successful you have to insist on being paid. “The short hair of the flappers was all about spending less time on one’s hair and more time going for champagne.”

I went on to DC and, then, off to my new home, all very different than what I had ever hoped for in life but suddenly different enough to feel something besides resentment and despair.

If WonderCon 2017 is any indication of what we’ll be seeing from cosplayers this summer at future cons, then this year will be quite an impressive year for cosplay. With so many great properties from film, television, anime, comics, gaming, and beyond, there was no lack of creativity this year. Sadly, I could only make it to Sunday at WonderCon, but was sure to make the best of it and capture all that I could.

It was great to see familiar faces I hadn’t seen since San Diego Comic-Con 2016 and WonderCon 2016. And of course I met a lot of amazing new cosplayers I hope to bump into again We’ll be at Anime Expo in Los Angeles next!

WonderCon was started in 1987 in Oakland, California, as “The Wonderful World of Comics Convention.” The show was the brainchild of Bay Area comics retailer John Barrett, who called on a number of friends and associates to help realize his vision, including Bob Borden, Bryan Uhlenbrock, Rory Root, and Mike Friedrich. With the third year, “WonderCon” became the official name of the convention. The original show included all the classic comics convention features: an Exhibit Hall with dealers selling old and new comics and other items, programming, anime screenings, and games. In 2001, after the 15th event, then co-owners Mike Friedrich and Joe Field (another prominent Bay Area comic retailer) decided they could no longer devote the time needed to maintain the quality of the show they helped create. They contacted Comic-Con International in hopes that the organization could fold WonderCon into the Comic-Con family of conventions.

WonderCon is literally the sister show to Comic-Con International, embracing all the main aspects of that show, including comics, movies, TV, animation, the Masquerade, and more. The event has grown in all aspects over the years: more attendees, more exhibitors, more programming, and more fun. In its current Anaheim-based incarnation, WonderCon continues to be a must-attend event on the comic book convention schedule.

Thank You 4 Your Service est un album qui fut lancé sans trop de promotion et qui malgré les craintes des fans (qui ont dû attendre 18 ans ce dernier album de la formation) a su montré le groupe sous ses meilleurs jours. Aidé par de nombreux complices sur ce long-jeu comme Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak ou encore le légendaire Andre 3000, ACTQ conserve sa production aux accents jazz tout en ayant un son moderne sur la totalité de la galette. 8. Kaytranada - 99.9%

Qui aurait pensé qu’un album d’un producteur se retrouverait dans mon top 10 de l’année? La plupart du temps ces albums sont des déceptions, mais ce n’est pas le cas de 99.9%. Kaytranada réussit avec son premier album à montrer toute la diversité de ces productions tout en invitant des artistes de grande renommée à venir les complémenter à presque tous les morceaux du disque. C’est l’album qui vous faut pour bien démarrer une soirée.

7. Kanye West - The Life of Pablo

I LOVE KANYE AS MUCH AS KANYE LOVES KANYE

Malgré une sortie catastrophique et ses mises à jour boîteuses, The Life of Pablo est l’album que j’ai le plus écouté cette année. Kanye West a su livrer un disque qui regroupe à peu toutes les phases de sa carrière tout en livrant deux ou trois morceaux qui pourraient figurer au top de son catalogue déjà très étoffé. FML, Real Friends et Wolves montrent un Kanye vulnérable qui nous rappellent les premiers disques du rappeur de Chicago. Famous, Highlights et Facts dépeignent l’artiste de manière à exposer toute sa mégalomanie. C’est donc un album qui représente très bien Kanye West et toute sa bipolarité, un long album ayant des sommets et parfois des creux, tant dans la sonorité que dans la qualité, mais qui reste toute de même un grand album de la part d’un grand artiste de notre génération.

6. The Avalanches - Wildflower

Un autre retour inespéré de l’année 2016. Le duo australien a sorti l’an dernier son deuxième album en carrière et son premier disque en 16 ans! Wildflower, bien qu’il respecte le processus de création du groupe basé grandement sur le sampling, est quand même bien différent au niveau sonore. Wildflower est un album d’été idéal qui semble déjà être timeless, si bien que je l’amènerais sur une île déserte si je n’avais qu’un choix à faire.

5. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial

Après une dizaine d’albums sur Bandcamp, Will Toledo fait finalement son entrée sur un label majeur, Matador Records. Teens of Denial est l’un des meilleurs albums d’Indie-Rock de l’année et même de la décennie. Toledo réussit à nous faire revisiter notre jeunesse à notre plus grand bonheur sur des pièces tellement denses qu’on peut penser qu’une même pièce en contient cinq ou six. Un album d’une heure et dix minutes parsemés de morceaux grinçants et de quelques longues ballades dépassant parfois les dix minutes voici ce que propose le très jeune Will Toledo à son entrée officielle sur le circuit indie.

4. David Bowie - Blackstar

Blackstar est le dernier cadeau que nous a laissé David Bowie deux jours avant son décès. Les sept morceaux qui composent l’album sont sans taches. On revoit un Bowie qui expérimente sur des chansons comme Sue (Or In A Season of Crime) et Girl Loves Me. Bowie réalise également l’un de ses souhaits les plus chers c’est-à-dire de travailler avec un jazz band sur l’un de ces albums et c’est plus que réussi, la vision de Bowie a parfaitement a été accomplie par les musiciens. 3. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool

2. James Blake - The Colour in Anything

James Blake nous a raconté sa peine d’amour en 1h20 et j’ai été conquis. Il n’y a aucun des dix-sept morceaux à jeter à la poubelle. Ils racontent tous une partie de l’histoire de la vie de Blake et se sans tomber dans la redondance ou la facilité. James Blake raffine sur The Colour In Anything ce qui était déjà d’un haut niveau sur ces deux albums précédents, son R&B mélancolique qui baigne dans l’électro est d’autant plus efficace sur cet album lorsqu’il est conducteur de textes aussi biens écrits. 1. Frank Ocean - Blonde

Difficile de trouver un album plus personnel que Blonde cette année ou même dans l’histoire de la musique au grand complet. Avec Blonde, Frank Ocean nous livre la bande sonore de sa vie. Mais à mon grand bonheur, les paroles et la musique de Blonde sont facilement attachantes. On peut tout de suite se reconnaître dans Blonde et ressentir les même sentiments que Frank Ocean. Frank a donc non seulement fait la bande sonore de sa vie, mais il a aussi écrit la mienne pour une bonne partie de 2016. Les arrangements du disque sont minimalistes, mais somptueusement travaillés. N’oublions pas que l’album qui était prévu pour juillet 2015 a été repoussé à de nombreuses reprises avant de finalement sortir en août 2016. Blonde a possiblement l’une des meilleures fins d’albums de tous le temps en enchaînant White Ferrari, Seigfried, Godspeed et Futura Free.
