books (re)read in 2024: where the crawdads sing by delia owens
She knew the years of isolation had altered her behavior until she was different from others, but it wasn't her fault she'd been alone. Most of what she knew, she'd learned from the wild. Nature had nurtured, tutored, and protected her when no one else would.

“I hafta go, Kya. Can’t live here no longer.”
She almost turned to him, but didn’t. Wanted to beg him not to leave her alone with Pa, but the words jammed up.
“When you’re old enough you’ll understand,” he said. Kya wanted to holler out that she may be young, but she wasn’t stupid. She knew Pa was the reason they all left; what she wondered was why no one took her with them.

People romanticizing Kya’s life are missing or ignoring a huge part of her story, which is the theme of repeated trauma. The movie is too pretty, overly-saccharine, and paints Kya as this carefree marsh spirit who can’t be tamed. I’ve seen multiple posts of “Omg Kya is literally me, I want to live in a marsh away from people and society!” and “Kya living in a marsh is such a mood.”
While there are certainly alluring, positive things about the idea of living off the land and relying on yourself, Kya’s life isn’t an “aesthetic” or a dreamy wonderland. Kya’s life experiences include:
-Being a victim of and witness to severe domestic violence
-Losing her whole family by age 7
-She’s described in the book as nearly starving to death as a child
-Didn’t get an education due to parental absence/neglect and trauma by peers
-Sexual assault trauma
-Being dragged into jail and court
-Killing someone, which is traumatic no matter how justified
Kya didn’t exile herself to the marsh in a cutesy “I’m not like other girls” way, she did it because she was traumatized and had zero social skills. Remember, Kya WANTED to go to school and learn; she tried to reach out and make connections at various times. Movie Kya was doe-eyed and innocently sweet. Book Kya was borderline feral, absolutely filthy, wore clothes that didn’t fit her and certainly weren’t fashionable, had no access to education or medical care, and none of this should be portrayed as “omg, goals.”

Imagine:
Meeting Kya
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Request: Yes or No
Been busy irl! Sorry for no new sun and moon part. I most likely won't be posting tomorrow or on Wednesday as I'll be going on a trip but hopefully I can get the new part out after that.
~~~
The sun felt warm against your skin, fingers dipped into the cool water of the marsh. The air felt fresh, the buzzing of insects sounded better than the chatter of the town, and the solitude of it all felt just right. No prying eyes or nosy ears. No gossiping neighbors or so-called friends who gave out backhanded compliments.
The soft sound of a motor pulled your attention away from the dark water and onto the boat approaching yours. The owner studied you for a moment, almost as if assessing if you were a threat or not.
"You must be Tate's friend." You called out, wiping your fingers against your pants. You knew who she was, or at least what the town had dubbed her. The Marsh Girl. Not a day went by without some old lady whispering about the dirty, wild girl living alone in the marshes. You'd heard plenty about her in your youth; teeth as sharp as a gators, eyes that glowed in the dark, and feral like a street cat.
And yet, she looked no different than the other girls in town.
"You know Tate?" She called back, allowing her boat to get closer to yours.
"He's my cousin."
"(Y/N)?" It felt odd to have the infamous Marsh Girl say your name.
"He's mentioned me, huh?" You chuckled and she smiled warmly.
"Yes," She nodded, shoulders lowering as she relaxed. "He said he always followed you around when you were kids. He mentioned he borrowed some books of yours to teach me things."
Right. 'Borrowed'. Tate totally hadn't taken your books without mentioning it to you only to return them a week or two later with a toothy grin and promises of making it up to you.
"You heard from him?" She asked, hands curling in her lap as her expression turned solemn.
"Not since he left." You shook your head. "But his dad mentioned he's doing well."
"Good." She breathed, though the frown remained on her face.
"Has Tate ever mentioned my writing?" You asked, hoping a change of topic would lift her spirits.
"Yes, he did. Said he wanted to introduce us so we could publish a book together with my drawings.. said you wanted to be an author."
"Well, how 'bout it? I've got time to spare, if you want to put those artistic skills to work."
Gifs aren't mine.
WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING (book)
WHY KYA CLARK AND TATE WALKER ARE RELATIONSHIP GOALS
They have similar interests
They have always cared about each other even when they were children
Tate accepted Kya unconditionally, for a moment he thought she didn’t fit into his world, but he discovered he actually wanted to fit into hers and did everything to make that happen
They loved each other
He was probably quite lonely during his early life and we know she was too so it’s nice to think they could be alone together
He fed her seagulls everyday when she was arrested
He actually built her a home (or parts of it) and a life she deserved instead of promising it
Feather boy & Marsh girl
The way he found a special language to get to Kya by leaving her things he knew she would love and never pushing her to move at a pace she was not comfortable with
Kya finding out she always loved Tate and deciding she wants all in leaving her solitude and building life with love
Them not having kids and being okay with that and even becoming closer
Tate became a part of the Marsh, all he actually did in life led to him being with her
All she could think of now was getting back into that space of grass and sky and water. Alone, she’d been scared, but that was already humming as excitement. There was something else, too. The calmness of the boy. She’d never known anybody to speak or move so steady. So sure and easy. Just being near him, and not even that close, had eased her tightness. For the first time since ma and Jodie left, she breathed without pain; felt something other than hurt. She needed this boat and that boy.
