The Chemicals between us ~Ch.5

With most of the base now empty with only a skeleton crew to run it there was plenty of accommodation to go around. Some of the younger women had decided on sharing a dormitory meant for new recruits whilst others had chosen singular personnel quarters. Some had even moved into less homely lodgings like Torbjorn, who had taken one of the empty garages near the workshop, or Angela who had neatly converted a spacious office next to medical into a comfortable bedroom. After much indecisiveness and downright ludacris demands from having the Commanding officers quarters to room service the Junkers had finally settled on taking a small disused storage warehouse, it even had two floors allowing Roadhog to have his own space in what felt like forever. It was dusty, the metal fixtures had spots of rust and it was far more industrial than cosy even though the old lady captain had graciously given him two beds. To him, it felt the closest to his farm he would ever get in a long while. It would do. Junkrat wasted no time in making himself a workstation even going as far as to unceremoniously flip his mattress and blankets on the floor along with what few possessions he had with him and after a few adjustments had used the metal bed frame as a makeshift tool holder to stand alongside the desk he had ‘borrowed’.

It had kept him busy for a couple of hours in which time some team members had come to see them. Morrison had once again reminded the Junkers of rules and boundaries and consequences until Junkrat threatened to blow up his own eardrums if the old man kept going on about it, the Doctor came to check on his stitches and to return Roadhogs Hogdrogen despite her advise on his frequent usage, he politely waved her off as he clicked in the canister to his mask and taking in a deep drug infused breath, he was running low and finding more would be hard to come by in this country but he’d find a way, until then he had reluctantly agreed to use an oxygen tank at night time. As the evening drew in Roadhog was snoring loudly on his two single beds as Junkrat delicately worked on his prosthetics, a sudden knock on the metal door made him jump and drop the small screwdriver he was holding. ‘Fucks sake! Dont fucking like this Hog!’ He called down to a grumbling Roadhog who wheezed as he sat up. ‘S’pose we should get used to it..’ He muttered in reply, heaving himself up and heading for the door. He couldn't blame Junkrat for his anxiousness, he should probably talk to him about it later. He heard voices outside as he reached for the door handle which shushed as he pulled it open. His gaze dropped downward at the sight of a young man with dreads and two young women before him, their eyes widening at the huge man before them. ‘Yeah?’ Roadhog grunted at them. The young man squeaked and hastily nudged one of the girls forward, the young asian woman rolled her eyes and held her chin high looking right into the black glass eyes of his mask. ‘See guys? Told you he was big.’

‘Hana! Don't be rude!’ Said the remaining woman in a european accent. She was holding a toolbox and had oil on her clothes. Must be the Lindholm girl. ‘I’m sorry Mr Rutledge, Papa sent me to give these to Junkrat.’ She rattled the toolbox.

‘We’re calling him Jamie cos Junkrats a dumb name!’ Hana called loudly trying to get his attention from behind Roadhog, It worked as the tell tale sound of his peg leg could be heard coming down the flight of stairs. Junkrat pushed Roadhog out the way and made a face at his visitors, ‘What's this the welcome party or summit?’ He leaned against the doorway and crossed his arms.

‘Something like that, we brought you guys something to eat.’ Said Lucio, picking up some trays of food beside him.

‘Yep.’ Said Roadhog, reaching over and taking the trays, promptly returning inside and sitting down to eat. Junkrat glanced over the brunette girl, ‘You the angry hobbits kid? Bridgette? Baguette?’

‘Brigitte. You didn't call him that to his face did you?’

‘Yeah.’

She laughed out loud, ‘And you lived? Wow the last person to call him that had a hammer to the face. You got on his good side. Oh here take this.’ She handed the toolbox to Junkrat, he gave her a quizzical look as he opened it. Inside was a decent selection of different tools designed especially for prosthetic maintenance. ‘Papa works on his own too, Jesse and Genji go to Dr Zeigler since theirs are highly advanced, can I see yours?’

‘Er…?’

She didn't wait for an answer, grabbing his metal hand and holding it close to her eyes. ‘You made this?’ She asked, eyes wide. ‘Wow even down to the synthetic nerves but you need to fix the casing. There's plenty of scrap metal in the workshop and there's a small soldering kit in the tool box already.’

‘Yeah er..thanks?’ He dislodged his hand from her grip and flexed the metal digits now feeling slightly insecure.

Hana stepped forward, ‘Hey erm..thanks for not telling Commander Morrison I let you out, even though I technically didn't! But still..thanks Jamie.’

‘Sure, no worries.’ He shrugged.

‘Look man, I appreciate that this must suck being here for you, but y’know it's not bad here. Good people, sure plenty of different opinions but we’re a team. Your here now so why not make the best of it? We can help you out, and hey! It's great to have someone else our age to hang with!’

‘Our age? I’ll remind you i'm the youngest here.’

‘Youngest human.’ Corrected Brigitte

Hana brushed her off. ‘Pfft..details.’

Junkrat rubbed the back of his neck with his living hand, ‘Yeah er, may need time to adjust to all this...been a long while since i've been around people, and even then anyone of em could kill ya if they felt like it.’

‘So what was it like? Growing up in the Outback, what happened to you after the Omnium explosion?’ Asked Hana

Now he felt uncomfortable and wanted to back out of whatever this was, luckily for him Lucio had noticed and took Hana by the arm. ‘C’mon leave the guy alone, we don't need to know anything. Lets go.’ He looked to Junkrat and gave him a small understanding smile, he smiled back and nodded a thanks.

‘Come by the workshop tomorrow Jamie.’ Said Brigitte as she turned to follow Hana and Lucio. ‘We’ll fix your hand up and Papa can show you what we do. Night!’

‘Yeah..laters..?’ He hovered by the door and watched them leave, absentmindedly he began gnawing at his lip, wincing as he remembered the stitches there. He closed the door and looked at the toolbox tucked under his arm, he knew Roadhog was watching him.

‘You alright Rat?’ He said between mouthfuls of food.

At first he didn't indicate that he had heard him, he was still looking at the toolbox and seemingly lost in his thoughts.

‘Rat?’

‘Fine mate.’

Roadhog sighed then nodded to the chair next to him. ‘Sit down, eat something.’

‘Nah thanks i'm just gonna-’

‘No you’re not. You’re gonna sit and you’re gonna eat.’

‘Not hungry.’

‘Stop. I know what you are doing and you stop it right now. Sit the fuck down.’

Junkrat stared him down despite knowing he almost always lost this game. Roadhog grunted in satisfaction as he eventually stomped over to the table and slamming the toolbox on it before slouching on the chair and pouting. Roadhog pushed a tray towards him. ‘Eat.’ He said, continuing with his own meal. Finally Junkrat succumbed and pulled the tray closer and there was a moments silence before Roadhog decided to break it.

‘So..’ He said, ‘Jamie huh?’

‘Yeah..it's weird.’

‘Just be glad you didn't forget your own name after all these years.’

‘You’re one to talk..Mako.’

‘Hmph..’ The silence once again hung between as Roadhog decided the best way to ask after his partners current mental state.

‘So..you alright? Don't give me any of that ‘im fine’ bullshit’

Junkrat flashed him a grin. ‘I’m okay mate.’

‘Rat I swear to fucking God-’

‘What Hog? What? You wanna know im freaking out? That i feel totally out of control, that I now have a fuck load of people to figure out whether they’re gonna kill me or kill you, that I am totally out of place here and everyone's asking fucking questions about fucking everything and it's bringing up alotta fucking stuff which i don't fucking wanna think about and my arm which isn't even fucking there hurts so fucking much and all this shit is spinning round n round in my head and I just want it to shut the fuck up!’ He kicked the table in his emotional outburst which had threatened to spill over all day, Roadhog was waiting for it and simply sat quietly and listened as the younger Junker got it out of his system. Junkrat slumped lower in his chair, running his flesh hand over his face and through his hair, his anger subsiding and looking exhausted. ‘Its..It's too fucking much mate, need to feel control over something, need to blow something up!’

Roadhog felt this was a good time to step in before Junkrat worked himself up again. Reaching behind his head he unclasped his mask and set it on the table, his skin felt strange to the sudden exposure to the air. It was extremely rare for him to go maskless but the boy needed calming and he needed to understand that Roadhog was being genuine. ‘Rat, look at me.’ He didn't, once again testing the stitches in his lip and purposely looking away. Roadhog sighed. ‘Jamison?’

That got his attention and he finally looked at Roadhogs maskless face. ‘I’m sorry I got angry with you earlier. I know you were worried, but I don't think this place is bad. It's not like Junkertown, If i thought we were in immediate danger coming here then believe me, we would not be here. Now...you feel out of control? Yet you’ve negotiated a contract and made whatever this is work more to your favor. Yes, we are out of place but this is a thrown together vigilante group. I doubt you’re the only one feeling like that, personally I dont give a shit that I stick out. Now..those kids that came to see you, pretty sure they don't want to kill you. Looks to me they wanna be friends if you remember what those are, you could do with some actual social interaction so don't be a dick about it, even when they are curious. And you’re gonna get questions Jamison, so you set the boundaries on what you’re okay to talk about. No one needs to know about what happened to you growing up there, that's up to you. Now you can't go blowing shit up every time you get angry or upset so you need to find another outlet so maybe that girl and her Dad can help out with that..As for your arm I can't offer any advice. Its worse when you’re upset, when you’re tired and when you’re hungry. So take a breath, fucking eat and try and get some fucking sleep. In the morning take a shower, eat again then we take it from there alright?’

He still looked upset but less so and more settled, he flexed his metal hand and gave his friend a small smile. ‘Alright mate.’

Roadhog regarded him and after a moment's consideration reached out to ruffle Jamison's hair, thankful that he didn't flinch at the touch. Instead he grinned and playfully swatted his huge hand away, ‘Alright fuck off with that.’

Roadhog snorted and returned to his food, ‘Eat. Then get some sleep. Not gonna talk to you rest of the night, you've heard enough from me to last you a week.’

‘...Thanks Hog.’

Roadhog simple grunted in acknowledgment.

The next morning a small beep beep sounded from the commanders private computer, Jack sat down in front of it and after a few clicks was present with a new message.

:Got some very angry people here so I must congratulate you on your success of finding the Junker. Please share if you find out what he has! No need to thank me of course. Also this may interest you..’

Jack waited and eventually another beep beep came from the computer, this time it was a file attachment.

Jack did not bother to reply, instead opening the already encrypted file. It was a photo of a very wealthy looking Omnic who he instantly recognised as Maximillien and two men; one of them being Sanjay Korpal, one of the Viskar corporations most senior members..now what was he doing meeting one of Talons inner council? It wasn't the first time Viskar had popped up in all this, It was only yesterday that Ana had debriefed him on her mission to Iraq, learning of their desire to have a presence in Oasis where coincidently a key member of Talon and former Blackwatch agent Moira O’Deorain was based. ‘Getting to her would be near impossible.’ in that city, Jack thought to himself as he shut down the computer and Vishkar would need to make a more obvious move on their allegiances before sending anyone in, for now it was smoke and mirrors. Reinhardt have given him a more solid lead from his time spent in Latvia near the border of Russia, learning of a possible Talon shipment being sent to a supposedly disused military compound near a town called Bryansk south of Moscow. If it was indeed a Talon base with a cache of weapons he needed it destroyed. He went to the communicator on the wall and pushed a button, ‘Athena,’ He spoke into the speaker. ‘Call Captain Amari, Lieutenant Reinhardt and Agents Genji and Zarya to the briefing room please.’

‘At once Commander.’ The A.I replied.

Soon enough everyone was accounted for in the briefing room and Morrison began the meeting. ‘Athena bring up a map of Bryansk, Russia.’ A large map projected in the middle of the table. ‘Bryansk, a densely wooded city in western Russia. Mostly a center for steel and machinery manufacturing and if Reinhardts source is to be trusted a cache for Talon weapons. Athena, give a rundown on any empty military compounds or warehouses within a thirty mile radius of the city.’

‘Overwatch satellites are mostly shutdown however I will do what I can Commander,’ Athena replied.

They waited as the A.I scanned the area, slowly pinpointing buildings within the search radius, five of them showed in total. ‘That is all I can do for now Commander.’

Jack looked at each point on the map, assessing the most likely place for the compound, ‘Athena, zoom in on the point north west of Bryansk.’ The map zoomed in showing a building deep within the woodland, it was well away from any towns yet within 10 miles of the nearest main road. This had to be the place.

‘Zarya, welcome to your first mission. I want you and Genji to go to Bryansk, get a safe house and scan the area. If it's true what this place is we need to take control of it, seize the cache and destroy the compound.’

Zarya nodded, ‘I will gladly go, but must I go with the Cyborg?’

‘Oh please, none taken,’ retorted Genji

Morrison gave her a hard look. ‘I understand your mistrust of Omnics Zarya but Genji is Human. You agreed to be apart of this team and in doing so agreed to work with whomever I say. Are we clear on this?’

She looked between him and Genji with coldness in her eyes, ‘Fine. I agree.’ She reluctantly said.

‘Good. Ana, Reinhardt? Anything to add?’

‘My source tells me armoured trucks go through at least once a week, morning and evening. I suspect they have a lot of armed guards patrolling. Perhaps Zarya can gather more information in the city whilst Genji surveys the area?’ Suggested Reinhardt.

‘Just be careful Zarya, you are well aware you are popular in Russia, perhaps they can set up base in a smaller neighbouring town with less people. Questions may be asked if you go looking for information from the wrong people. Id recommend caution.’ Said Ana

‘This is not my first mission finding information..nor is my first mission working with someth...someone so..technologically advanced. It will be fine, I will deliver.’ Replied Zarya.

‘That's settled then, I’ll have Lena program the Orca for autopilot to a safe location, you should have no issues getting in or out. Once you get enough information we’ll send a second team out. Go prepare yourselves, you depart this evening.’ Said Morrison as he dismissed them.

‘Yes commander.’ They said in unison, giving eachother an uneasy look before leaving the room.

Jack sat back in his chair and sighed. ‘This is going to be hard work.’

‘Oh and what part would that be Jack? From my recollection this has always been hard work.’ Said Ana mildly.

‘Keeping everyone in line Amari, we have people here with very different opinions. There's going to be conflict.’

‘Those different opinions could be beneficial Commander,’ Offered Reinhardt. ‘It allows us to see things from new perspectives.’

‘Not when we have in fighting it doesn't, we all know that.’ Said Jack, standing up to leave. Ana and Reinhardt shared a look with each other. It was probably best to let that subject slide for now.

‘Just be glad no ones having sex Jack, now that would be difficult to deal with.’ Ana called after him, trying to lighten the mood. He said nothing and left the room.

‘Tsk..always the boy scout isn't he Reinhardt?’ She said to her friend.

‘Somethings never change Ana, for good or bad. At Least we are still here to guide the younger generation.’

She smiled warmly at him and squeezed his hand, she had missed her old friend.

As evening creeped across the watchpoint Mei glanced towards the Orca as it was being prepared for flight from the window of Winston's Laboratory and felt a pang of jealousy before returning to type away at a computer. She did not come here often, she still had not had a proper conversation with Winston since her heated phone call. He had tried, as had all the older members, asking her how she was and how she was coping and being oh so nice to her. Too nice, they couldn't hide their pity if they tried. They felt sorry for the poor little Climatologist asleep for a decade whilst her teammates and friends lay dead around her. She didn't want their pity, she hated it. She hated their smiles and concern, she hated how they danced around the subject, fearful of upsetting her. Why? When she was already so sad, so angry. It was her own fault she supposed. Wearing her mask that showed the world she was the same Mei all those years ago. Kind, polite and happy, optimistic and positive. That's what she showed to the world, did her friends look at her with pity in their eyes because they see through the front or was it all in her head?

She gave herself a little shake, jolting herself to stop from lingering on that dark cloud that constantly loomed in the back of her mind. She rested her head on her hand and continued watching the computer transfer data onto her small laptop. It wasn't her usual work on weather patterns or climate but she was desperate to feel useful here, so here she was alone in Winstons lab using his computer to transfer information on what needed repairing in the watchpoint from most urgent to least. Right down to the last service bot. She was so bored, but at least she could be alone after yet another rough night.. She heard the door open downstairs and she let out a small sigh, so much for avoiding conversation she thought as she began to pack up her belongings. ‘I'm done here Winston.’ She called, tucking the laptop under her arm and preparing to leave. ‘I'll send you the list later this..evening.’ She paused at the top of the stairs. It wasn't Winston who had come in.

‘Yeah if I see King Kong i'll pass on the message.’ Junkrat said casually, barely glancing at her as he tinkered with some lab equipment.

She narrowed her eyes at him,‘You are not supposed to be in here.’

‘Oh if i had a penny every time i've heard that.’ He laughed.

Mei began to walk down the stairs. ‘You know you can't be in here. We’ve all been informed of your ‘contract’.’ she mimed the quotations with her free hand. Junkrat ignored her, sitting on an office chair and using his metal peg to slowly spin himself around. He picked up a small random piece of apparatus on one of his turns and began playing with it, the hint of a smirk on his face.

Mei blinked at him, taken slightly aback at being ignored, she brushed a strand of hair from her face and put her hand on her hip. ‘I said-’

He spun to face her. ‘Yeah i heard ya, and it's a big place here, you can't blame a guy for getting lost.’

‘You are not allowed to enter the labs without supervision.’

‘You're here aren't ya? He retorted, spinning around.

‘I..youre…’ She huffed in exasperation, the attitude on him! She had expected none less from this uncouth criminal Junker. ‘Nǐ zhège húndàn’ she muttered under her breath.

He swivelled in his chair to face her once again and grinned at her, ‘Aww c'mon Frosty...bet you know worse insults than that.’

she stared at him incredulously ‘You...speak Mandarin?’

‘Enough to get by and enough to know when someone's calling me a jerk or worse.’

At least she had the grace to blush but like hell was she going to apologise to him, instead she scowled hard. Junkrat faked a shudder, ‘Fuck..get cold just looking at ya.’

‘Look somewhere else then!’ She snapped back.

‘With pleasure!’ he retorted and he swung his chair again turning his back to her and going back to his exploring. Mei stood there with her mouth slightly open, she could not believe his attitude walking in like he owned the place, ignoring the contract which was his own idea and frankly not seeming to care to follow its rules. He was really beginning to bug her and in turn she was ruffling his feathers too. He disliked authority, and this Icy woman was talking to him like a school boy in trouble.

‘You need to leave now.’ She stated, pointing to the door.

Junkrat rolled his eyes, ‘Yeah i'm going, you're pretty boring.’

‘Erm..Excuse me?’

‘Its means-’

‘I know what it means!’ She snapped. ‘And i'm sorry i don't find wanton destruction and exploding things a good use of my time.’

‘You should try it Frosty..might warm ya up abit.’ He winked at her.

Her face felt hot. Why did her face feel hot? ‘You..gah! Hundan! Why are you even here? Overwatch isn't for people like you!

‘meaning..? He grinned slyly, leaning toward her.

She knew he was baiting her, but something in her made her want to argue with him. To get the last word. 'Overwatch is for heroes, for making a positive impact on the world...it's not for half crazed criminal arsonists!’ She responded with an edgy tone. He gave her a smug smirk and she caught a glimpse of a gold tooth. She expected him to react in anger, the fact he found this amusing made the exchange all the more infuriating.

‘You’re a criminal too frosty...everyone here is now, even the doctor. So, what kinda illegal activities does a girl like you do round here?

‘I'm a scientist if you must know. I have a doctorate in Climatology.’

‘You have a what doing what now?’

She rolled her eyes. Of course he didn't know what that meant. ‘I study weather patterns and how it affects the Earth's climate.’

He stared at her a moment before barking out a laugh. ‘Oh right ok then. Very useful when the the bots wipe out half the population and you got terrorists kicking in your door. But hey, at least we'll know the forecast!’

Her eyes widened in anger and her nostrils flared, not that he seemed to notice and if he did he didn't seem to care. Silently she pointed to the door, he snickered as he stood up and stretched, much to her surprise he was a good deal taller than her. She watched him leave, keeping an icy glare on her face and tapping her foot with impatience. ‘Later Frosty.’ He called over his shoulder as the door shut behind him. Mei breathed heavily through her nose, her anger bubbling threatenly inside her. He had touched a nerve and patronized her, whether he meant to or not. ‘Ugh! Cào nǐ zǔzōng shíbā dài!’ She shouted after him.

She soon headed back to her room, throwing the laptop down on her bed and sitting down roughly next to it, Snowball woke from its charging station and went to greet her, making a confused noise as she failed to notice him. ‘Oh..sorry Snowball. I just met the biggest Jerk in the world that's all.’ She hugged her droid friend and decided not to let that Junker get to her. She picked up her laptop and sat down at the desk and began to work. Why was it so hard to concentrate? She kept going back to her meeting with Junkrat, why? He wasn't worth it, he was just trying to upset her. She shouldn't let that jerk get to her. So why where her fingers tapping in agitation? Why was she feeling prickly anger that simmered incessantly? Why did he make her feel like she was useless here? No stop it Mei, you have work to do..tap, tap, tap. Is this that important? No of course it is, this is helpful to our efforts. Tap, tap, tap. Athena could of done this in minutes..Tap, tap, tap..I'm helping, i'm helping..aren't I? Tap, tap, tap..Doesn't he know anything?! ‘UGH!!’ She slammed the laptop shut and stood up so abruptly snowball spun midair in surprise.

‘I’m not taking this from some stupid Junker!’ She shouted, storming out of the room.

Roadhog was resting outside his new accommodation enjoying the cool evening breeze and the quiet, an empty canister of Hogdrogon next to him. Four left..getting low. His peace soon ended as he heard the familiar thud of a metal peg on the ground and only looked up when the sound stopped in front of him. He nodded to Junkrats metal hand. ‘Fixed it then?’

'Yeah, feels pretty good too. They even had paint!’ Junkrat replied happily, admiring his handy work.

Roadhog grunted, ‘’Can see that, got alot on you..’

Junkrat sat down next to him. ‘I had a shower! With difficulty mind you, gonna have to modify one with supports.. Maybe I can accuse them of being ableist?’

‘Don't be a dick, Rat...eaten?’

Junkrat rolled his eyes, 'Yeah.’

'Did you sleep?’

'I told you this morning I did.’

‘Still lying.’ Roadhog replied. He had heard him during the night struggling with a nightmare, thankfully it wasn't bad enough he'd have to shake him awake. He expected as much and he hoped they would calm down once he was more settled here, If the boy even knew what settled was.

‘Did you behave yourself?’

‘I was in the workshop most of the day!’

'I know..not what i asked though.’

‘Yes! Fuck!’

Roadhog looked up as something caught his eye, Junkrat didn't notice nor could he see past Roadhogs massive frame. He did look up at him however when he sighed in annoyance.

'What?’

‘Happen to piss anyone off?’

‘Don't think so, though the rusky looks like she wants to break me in half.’

‘Anyone besides her?’

He thought for a moment, ‘..No? Now im not so sure..’’

‘Well have a think cos a small chinese girl is marching over here with murder in her eyes.’

‘Wha..?’ He leaned forward to look past Roadhogs huge stomach to where he was pointing. Sure enough Mei was walking with intent towards them with a very sour look on her face.

Junkrat groaned and rubbed his hand over his face. ‘For fucks sake.’ He muttered. ‘Tell her i'm not here..’ He used Roadhogs arm to push himself up to stand.

‘Shes looking right at you.’

‘Then she can watch me leave then, not keen on that one mate.’

‘Too late.’ Muttered Roadhog as Mei stomped over to Junkrat and stood right in front of him, even with him slouching the difference in height was comical, not that this deterred her anger to whatever he had done.

‘You! You waltz in where you’re not supposed to be, insult me! Patronize me?! And think i’m just going to be ok with that? You are possible the most rude and obnoxious Jerk i've ever had the displeasure of meeting!’

‘You forgot witty, dashing, inventive and misunderstood.’

‘Why are you even here!’

‘Keep up, I was forced here. Don't have a go for making it worth me while Frosty.’ Mei glowered at him and her nostrils flared. Roadhog was now watching with interest making a wager with himself if this small woman had it in her to knock Junkrat out cold.

My.name.is.Mei, she said, gritting her teeth.

‘Jamison. But I'm gonna call you Frosty cos it suits ya.’

‘You certainly suit Junkrat!’

‘Yeah…? I'm not arguing that.’

‘Do you even know what you did? Do you even care?’

‘Oh for fucks sake woman, so I went into a lab and touched some stuff, had a lil spinny on a chair. Not like I fucking broke anything!’

‘You insulted my work!’

‘....I did?’

He casually tested a joint in one of his metal fingers with a disinterested look on his face before responding to her outburst, ‘...Ya done?’ He said, sounding bored. Roadhog was now watching with keen interest, certain his partner was about to be suckerpunched. From this small woman it would be hilarious. But to his disappointment she didnt. What she did next surprised even herself let alone Junkrat. She grabbed his shoulders and pulled him down so that they were eye level and then spoke in a deadly, quiet voice.

'Mock my work again or make me feel inadequate and I will freeze you on the spot and impale you with an icicle between the eyes and into that messed up brain of yours.’ She glared at him for good effect before pushing him away and straightening up with an air of dignity, she quickly gave an anxious look toward Roadhog and walked away, both Junkers watching her leave until she disappeared from view.

‘Nicely done.’ Roadhog said sarcastically.

‘Fuck off, she came here looking for a fight. I didn't do nothing!’

‘Liar.’

‘Honestly, she does weather or some shite and made a joke. Not my fault she's sensitive!’

‘Well you obviously made an impression.’

‘Pfft! Like I give a shit what Frosty the big-titted snowman thinks.’ He slumped down once again, crossing his arms and sulking, he was quiet for a time processing what the hell had just happened. Soon enough his eyebrows raised and a roguish grin creeped across his face.

‘Hey Hog..?’

‘Hmm?’

So I think I’m over you…for real this time. Like, when I see you my heart doesn’t ache anymore. She doesn’t call for your name. I don’t think of you in the night as often. And when I do it’s more of a passing thought. Although I used cry about you. Whisper your name in the wind as if you could hear me , and even if you did I don’t think you would have cared. There’s this quote/ poem thing that really reminds me of you and me. “Because isn't the real tragedy how you found yourself in one another. How you took one brief look into the mirror of her, turned around, and walked away?” To be quite honest the whole thing makes me think of you. Because you were my first HUGE crush. Would it be weird to say you were my first love? Or I guess first unrequited love would sum it up better. But I know you loved me, just maybe not in that way, but I know you have thought about me that way. You wouldn’t held me the way you did if you didn’t. I remember you used come up behind me and tickle me and I would squeal, but I was also insecure so I didn’t really enjoy it. But I remember in that brief moment of joy it felt like us. Like it was you and me. Our friendship is very complicated, we always banter like we hate each other and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if you did. Because I would hate me too. It would be a lie to say that I barely developed these feelings for you because the truth is the moment I met you I was immediately attracted, I was hooked like a drug and I can’t get enough. I think that’s why I keep you in my life because I don’t know what I would do if you left. That’s why I basically forced you to sign those KIH papers, and why I wouldn’t let you quit band. I always thought you were gonna be in my life. And I’m not sure maybe you will be. As of right now we are in a spot where we are friends but kind of not and idk what to do. I couldn’t I picked you up, took you home with me and I stayed up all night fixing your broken pieces. I didn’t care that I had an exam the next day, because if you weren’t there I didn’t want to be there either. So when I went on your twitter and saw your new girl as your header, my heart broke. I could actually hear my glass heart break. Because you REALLY like this girl, more than you could ever like me. I guess that’s why you would rather make the trip to kit in your car and stay just so you could spend those extra two hours with her. One last think before I get back to work. I remember never wanting to date you. Obviously I wanted to date you, but I was saving my chance with you. I was saving you for later. Because I know that if we were to ever date we would break up. Even though daily horoscope tells me that we are basically soulmates, I know we aren’t right for each other. It’s something I always knew. I guess I just didn’t want to come to terms with it. So I guess this is my farewell letter? A farewell to my feelings for you. I know I will probably still have feelings for you but I think this is a turning point for me.

Ok so i got a breakdown of more lies sara abbott has put on my name so goo:

-saying my family kidnapped/forced her to stay in our house

My mom had to kick her out of my house because she did not want to leave. She kept asking to move in with us and my mom wouldnt allow it because i told my mom 1/10th of what a leech she was, my mom doesnt even know about the sexual assault. She just knew what a fucking horror sara was to live with because she was a shitty house guest in every way

-my family is a fucking hoarders nest

Everyone and their mother knows my mom is a hoarder thats why i tried to run away w izaya and grayson in a past life we have CPS up our ass every week and our house is miles better than it was but that being said why sara attacked me for my mothers mental illness especially when shes a fucking slob in general is beyond me. Also sara tried to say the reason she didn't shower was because my house was messy so kek

-She didn't know i was a minor

Sara was 21 i was 17, all discourse aside i dont feel this age gap was a problem because mentally shes apparently like 5 fucking years old or something so that makes up for the difference. Anyway, one of the first days she got here (i assumed cato told her how old i was cuz i knew how old she was and we were on fb before she came over where she couldve looked any second) she asked again how old i was and i said 17 and she said "omg is it creepy that im 21 with a 17 year old" and people tried to start shit over it and i defended it so for her to say i lied about being 18 is total fucking bullshit. She says my tattoos were why when i litcherally showed her my stick n poke kit. She knew i was underaged she knew i was a minor i was always open about that especially since i was smoking cigs at the time and i asked her to buy me a pack and she wouldnt so how she gonna say she didnt know i was underage??

-I raped her

This is the most despicable one to me for so many reasons. Sara says i "coerced" her into sex. I would be horny on the days where i wasnt drugged out of my mind and i would initiate sex with her, and she would say she wasnt into it so id say ok and turn around go to bed shed get upset and say she didnt want to disappoint me id say i didnt wanna have sex if she didnt want it and shed say yea she wanted it so id comply, i never even got off when we had sex shes a fake ass top i was just there for her to get off on so for her to say i coerced her into sex when she was always either the one initiating it or agreeing to it 100% is disgusting

(Before all this let it be known i got gardisil in 2012 but didnt get the booster cuz my mom had a strong antivax phase)

Late 2014 i was date raped (yea cassie kek someone got raped more than once in their life funnie ik). I went to planned parenthood got plan b and got tested, and found out there was a minute chance of hpv infection and that i should be retested. I was really embarassed and decided not to act but to tell any sexual partners i was with that i had hpv just to be safe. I was discussing this with another girl in my town who is also a victim of this dude and she told me to get tested immediately because there was word going around that he had HPV like crazy. I told sara before we did ANYTHING that i think i might have hpv but i had never had genital warts or anything like that and so the risk of me spreading it to another person was minute (even if i did have hpv that would still hold true its incredibly hard for an asymptomatic person to give it to someonesomeone especially when both parties are afab and no penetrative sex is happening). She still had sex with me multiple times without a care in the world whatsoever. After this i finally got to a gyno and got a test that came up fully negative for hpv, she explained that likely my body fought off any infection so i was neither infected or contagious but because of the fact that i went to planned parenthood like 48 hours after the assault the hpv may have been accutely present in my blood. She gave me the booster shot i needed and assured me that no, i do not have hpv

So this also leads to the fact that sara claims her hpv has given her vaginal pain, period troubles, and her family has an increased risk of cancer so that makes her afraid? Hpv does none of that. She is lying which given her history of being a complete hypochondriac is very suspicioussso. Anyways lemme see them test results sara if you really do have hpv cuz my annual pap and panel test is this Monday so lets see how the results stack up

Sara abbott had sex with me while i verbalized how high i was and even my mother could tell i was high. My own sister had to see her undressing me during an incident i dont remember at all. She guilt tripped me and threatened self harm and suicide constantly to keep me with her

Fugitives- Chap 2

Oooof the plots starting.

Ship: Eventual Ralbert

Warnings: Depictions of injuries, mentions of drugs, mentions of vomit and burns

Albert and Race entered Jacobi’s about twenty minutes later, both slightly out of breath from rushing there. The had lost track of the police after a few blocks, but were still wary as they continued along the busy streets. As Albert had predicted, there were only a couple other patrons milling about inside. Jacobi, the manager and head cook of the establishment, waved to Albert as he walked in, who in turn waved back with a smile. Race pulled his hood up, pointedly keeping his head bowed as they took a seat in the booth furthest to the back of the restaurant.

“You do realize that makes you look even more suspicious, right?” Albert said, taking a menu out of its holder and scanning the options.

Race took a menu as well, “Yeah, but I can’t have anyone recognize me.”

“I understand that,” Albert said, “But having your hood up basically screams criminal.”

Race snorted, “You seem oddly at peace with the fact that you’re having lunch with someone who quite literally dragged you along with him as he ran from fucking police officers.”

Albert shrugged, “You’re intriguing and my life’s boring. You seemed like a good opportunity for some excitement.”

Race looked up from his menu and searched Albert’s eyes before saying, “I don’t understand you.”

Albert smirked, “I could say the same about you.”

They broke eye contact when Jacobi came over to give them glasses of water and take their orders. Race ordered a Reuben with a side of fries and Albert settled for a pastrami sandwich. Albert stacked their menus and put them back, then pulled his water glass towards him and fiddled with the straw.

“So,” He said, surveying Race who had since taken down his hood, “That explanation you owe me.”

Race’s eyes darted to the side slightly, something Albert observed he did a lot, “First off, I don’t owe you anything. You chose to question me,” Race picked up his straw wrapper, crumpling it between his fingers. He was nervous, “But, if you must know, I got caught with some heroin on me,” by the tone of his voice, Albert could tell there was more to the story. He waited for Race to continue, but the other man remained silent.

“So...you’re a druggie?” Albert asked slowly.

Race shook his head, “No. The heroin’s not mine, nor is it for me directly.”

“Oh,” Albert said, “Who’s it for then?”

Race flicked the straw wrapper at Albert, who dodged it, “You ask a lot of questions,” he stated, “Is seriously none of this putting you off?”

Albert raised a shoulder, “I mean, it is. But like I said- you’re intriguing.”

Jacobi came back with their food and the two boys dug in. Race devoured his sandwich before Albert could finish even half of his own.

“I take it you were hungry?” Albert asked, popping a fry in his mouth.

Race drank some of his water, then took a bite of his pickle, “I don’t always have time to eat.”

Albert knit his eyebrows together, “Why?”

Race groaned and put his head in his hands, “Dude, oh my god.”

“Fine, okay,” Albert said, resignation in his voice, “I’ll stop asking questions.”

“Thank you,” Race breathed, “God today’s been weird.”

“You can say that again,” Albert waved Jacobi over and asked for the check, which the older man brought back a moment later, “I take it I’m paying?”

Race grimaced, “Uh, could you? I’m sorry. I was serious earlier when I said I don’t have money right now.”

Albert reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet, placing his credit card on top of the bill, “No problem.”

Jacobi took the credit card and went to put the transaction through. When he brought it back, Albert took it, then got up, Race following suit.

“Okay well, this has been interesting for a multitude of reasons,” Albert said, slipping his gloves back on his hands, “But I’m guessing we’re done-”

“I don’t know your name,” Race blurted out suddenly, “I just realized that you literally bought me lunch and I don’t know your name.”

Albert frowned, “Oh, well, can I trust you to know it?”

Race considered this, “No, but you know mine.”

“That’s unsettling,” Albert deadpanned, “But ya know what? Fuck it. My name’s Albert.”

“Albert what?”

“Uhh,” Albert shifted from foot to foot, “I only know your first name, so you only get to know mine.”

Race’s eye twitched slightly, but he didn’t push. They walked towards the exit and paused once they got outside, standing awkwardly for a moment, then Race extended his hand, which Albert shook.

“Thank you for hiding me for a bit,” Race said, “And for lunch.”

“You gonna be okay?” Albert asked, letting go of Race’s hand.

Race shrugged, “Yeah, I’ll be fine. Bye, Albert.”

“Bye, Race,” Race offered him a half-smile, then pulled up his hood again and began to walk away briskly, leaving Albert alone in front of Jacobi’s wondering what the hell just happened.

Albert sat alone in his apartment, eating some leftover pizza he had found in the fridge. His roommate, Elmer, was at his girlfriend’s place for the night, giving Albert some time to himself. He pulled up Netflix and sorted through his recommended list, looking for a new TV series to binge. When he found nothing, he impulsively searched for Phineas and Ferb and clicked on the first episode. The apartment was his for the night, why not indulge himself a little?

He dipped his cold pizza in some ranch- a tradition he’d had for as long as he could remember- and took a satisfied bite as the theme song for Phineas and Ferb played. He was just getting comfortable when he heard rapid knocking at his apartment door. He allowed himself a moment to be annoyed that someone interrupting his alone time, then paused the show and went to answer the door, pizza still in hand.

He opened the door expecting to see Elmer on the other side, claiming he forgot something. But when he saw the person in front of him, he quickly found he was wrong.

“What the fuck,” He said, taking a step back, “How’d you find my place?”

Race was standing in front of him, looking a little more than worse for wear. His jacket was gone and there were several visible rips on his shirt. He had a black eye and cuts were littered across his arms and face. He was looking at the ground and Albert could see some dried vomit surrounding his mouth.

“Uh, I have sources,” Race mumbled, “Can I please come in?”

Albert was speechless for a moment, “What the fuck,” He repeated.

Race met his gaze for the first time since he’d arrived, “Please? I literally have nowhere else I can go. I swear I’ll be out of your hair after this. I just need to use your first aid kit.”

Albert shook his head and began to close the door, but Race held out a hand to stop him, “You inserted yourself into my life,” Race whispered, frantically, “You insisted to know who I am and why I’m running. You owe me this.”

Albert couldn’t argue with that, so he opened the door wider and stood back to let Race in, “Thank you,” Race said, pushing past Albert, “Uh, where’s your bathroom?”

“Down the hall, first door on your left,” Albert said, gesturing in that direction, “Go ahead and wash up, I’ll go grab the first aid kit.”

Race nodded and walked towards the bathroom. Albert remained in the entrance hallway for a moment, still stunned. He forced himself to go to his kitchen and placed his pizza on a paper towel before retrieving the first aid kit from the top of the fridge. Then he took an ice pack out of the freezer. A moment later, he heard the bathroom door open and Race entered the kitchen.

“Let’s go to the living room,” Albert said, leading them out of the kitchen, “Go ahead and sit down.”

Race sat wordlessly on the couch and Albert sat facing him on the coffee table. His face, while still bruised, was less bloody than it had been when he first entered and the vomit that had been there previously was gone.

Race huffed out a choked laugh when he looked at the TV, “Are you watching Phineas and Ferb?”

“Shut up, it’s a good show,” Albert handed him the ice pack, which he held up to his eye gingerly, “Drug deal gone wrong?” Albert asked, unzipping the first aid kit and taking out some alcohol pads.

“Something like that,” Race said, taking one of the alcohol pads Albert was holding out for him. He placed the ice pack on the couch next to him and began cleaning the cuts on his arm. Albert didn’t say anything further and watched as Race took a bandage out of the first aid kit and lifted his shirt to wrap his torso, which had several gashes in it. Albert frowned when he spotted what looked like a burn on Race’s side.

“Whoa, hey,” He murmured, reaching out to stop Race’s hand so he could get a better look, “You’re burned.”

“Wait, Albert-” Race tried to pull away, but it was too late. Albert already had a good view of the injury. It looked more like a brandish than a burn and Albert recognized it immediately. It was a small picture of the Brooklyn Bridge, surrounded by the outline of flames. The letter ‘P’ was printed in bold on the middle pillar. The symbol belonged to the Prospect Gang of Brooklyn. One of the two biggest and most dangerous gangs in New York City, only rivaled by the Empire Gang, which was mainly based in Manhattan. The two gangs were notorious for their competition- constantly at war over drug dealing territory and who would hold control over the other three boroughs. Albert had seen more than a few news stories about pedestrians who were killed at the hands of the two gangs after finding themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The burn looked fresh, like it had been done within the last hour. It was starting to blister and Albert could already tell it’d leave a scar. He swallowed, feeling cold fear run down his spine. He slowly looked up at Race, who was staring at the burn with wide eyes.

“So I take it you’re not just a drug dealer?” He asked, his voice shaking slightly.

Race flinched at his words and flicked his eyes over to Alberts, “No.”

I'm so happy to hear the kids abducted to Hong Kong got to hear and see and talk to their hero that saved them today through Zoom in Brian's phone!!!

It was so lucky and such perfect timing that he called me today while the military crews were still resting in China and Wendy was able to pinpoint their locations directly!!

He truly is their Hero and we are so lucky!

I have dreamed about him for years and for years have been waking up from nightmares telling Brian McGruff is a bad dog... But always the dream would be gone when i woke up or it was before it started happening and no one knew

I even had a feeling when I ordered the kits... So I'm not sure how these kids feel through the cracks because they were on my soul to save.

I also didn't know know about human trafficking like I do now, so I think the whole "Sabrina you just have a bad feeling because it reminds you what could happen..." Is how

A few other companies, too... I had a whole list. So Thorn is gonna check that out.

It just takes one person to prove a mood. I had a list of 17 companies that day then 26 more over the next week that I had this nag on while I was "picking on" Crime the McGruff Dog

Since I kept saying it that way in 2016 and I never ever messed up his name before they took down a list of companies associated with him according to my feelings and it was an unusual list.

So this man has likely saved nearly 30 times as many children as he could have hoped.

We will soon find out. In return he's to receive a mansion an economically stable brand new automobile. Fully paid.

Because I've dreamed of him, his voice and everything. He truly is an Earth Angel.

For nearly half a decade he's been the solution to my night terrors. I know why ask those children cried. I want to cry, too, And my tears are warm.

The children were mutated and mutilated. Arms cut off and sewn onto their foreheads and given all sorts of horrible viruses and drugs.

Tree just gave them their own fresh bodies. Replicas. Some back to the age/look they were kidnapped at, some slightly grown, according to the agreement between child and parent whichever they liked the sound of best, the child's preference being the ultimate decision maker. Their DNA4U will state and show they are replicated due to the reasons of faster healing and less overall damage that would cause future problems plus they got upgrades like bullet proofing, extra speed, strength increases, stuff like that. And extra extra heavy COVID19 instead of 3 feet you'll get it at 10 feet bad enough to kill you nearly instantly.

But they were horribly mistreated, starving, mental and physical torture, so much.

So I know to talk to the one rare person in the World that could save them and did was certainly very good heart and soul medicine.

So I'm glad he called me again and I didn't answer and Brian called back from the plane.

Yes of course. He flew to Enid then China then Hong Kong... You can make a man retire but you can't ever make a man quit. And I'm glad. Just so those kids could talk to their hero.

So lucky. Of all the hundreds of people working there he's been there only 6 months. And he took that initiative to just check...

Today living kids was 443.

Dead was 198,675 which tree ghosted back to life. (Gave new bodies)

Nearly a quarter of a million children.

Times 3 is 600k then add a zero. Looking at maybe 6 million kids and young adults...

And he deserves amazing amounts of pats on the back because that list would just sat around keeping dusty.

This is that old fashioned detective work like sitting at a gas meter while some one is down trying to find out how to save people (aliens included) from dying in a gas chamber and they're up there making sure that gas isn't turned on to kill the girl doing all the work -- he couldn't hear people downstairs through the street and i could get the truth out easier and faster before they even knew and I was always happy to get the news while he was just mad and angry. So i was the better to go. Cause everyone was always happy to see me. Cause I was always super nice and all interested in what they were doing.

Now unfortunately not so much.

But Charles was starting to get nightmares after my list and had came up with 14 more companies from coming from the same way i had came up with my list... So he talked to some the other people that felt creeped out about the assignment I insisted on doing and they also all added each two and then some kept a private list... Which they slowly added after verifying the company was then clean.. It started in 2013 these bad dreams.

So every time it happened or they started their nightmares they added to the list.

Overall 642 companies we dreamed of or felt or somehow had a psychic connection to. I dreamed of kids and old people and women. Some people only dreamed about men. Some just kids.

The companies we have left is 642 to check out as they hadn't had yet done any bad and no dreams or any thing has came up since...

Which isn't happy, we now know, but good news is whatever bad has happened we can fix is super special and magical ways.

So we have Thorn, CIA, Military, some FBI and some others to check what's been going on and see.

So that's about 8 Trillion that have been affected. But at least 6 Trillion have already been retrieved.

So this one single person has done the miraculous. The biggest miracle we have been waiting for on a personal level. For me its been 7 years but 6 since 9 other people started having their dreams affected and the lists began.

So 10 of us with nightmares. Night terrors. Waking up screaming or shaking or scared. And not knowing why but having a name, a company label. Sometimes or often a place on a map... As close to the actual GPS coordinates of longitude and latitude. Wake up listing numbers for no reason. Numbers that make no sense N 316941027865389421. Over and over.

Brian would look at me "what the fuck are you trying to do Morse code?"

"I'm trying to sleep thank you very much. Alan and Naomi. 38652361 I think you just messed me up"

One person. One person can make a difference. That's all it takes. One person.

One person to make sense of all these nightmares.

We don't need to be saved from them... They didn't bother so much... We could wake up. Be safe in our beds. Joke it out.

But there's people. Innocent children. Innocent adults that wake up into real living nightmares every single day.

And one person today made the phone call to make thst difference to about 200,000 kids and over 400,000 parents. And siblings and grandparents. Friends.

Just today he changed the world for at least a million whom now have a missing child come home.

Made one million hearts smile and backs release tension and sorrow.

And now we're looking at 2 trillion lost people. Who have kids. Who have parents. Grandparents. Friends.

There is no fucking reason over 18 million people were kidnapped in late 2019 (after October) or in any fucking time in 2020.

What is the point of a trial? Those people whom went to jail in 1990 for 20 years for kidnapping are doing it again. I sent 700 to jail. 36 are actively kidnapping. 642 are financially benefiting. The remaining are probably dead. 12 people.

I could tell the difference. Anyway if they're in Google you'll see they don't look human. They're pretty gross -- some do -- so ew be careful but from the plane height trust me they do not.

And its very careful with software to show no damage to trees or animals will occur.. And the software is very intelligent and cautious and only certain types of people can access it. Like a kidnapper can't turn on the computer and see where and how. But a Clark Kent or Louis Lane or someone can. But if an evil Donald Trump sits down next to, the software will shut down. Immediately. And lock out any user until hes removed.

“Oh fuck,” Josuke moaned, white knuckling his kitchen counter as he was thrust into over and over again. Rough hands were gripping his hips hard enough to leave bruises, and by God, Josuke hoped they did. He had always been way too loud during anything remotely sexual, and right now was no exception. The right spot was hit, Josuke felt like electricity was passing through his body, “God, right there, I’m close—“

One of the hands on his hip reached up for his hair, pulling up him with a gentle, yet firm grip, causing him to arch his back against the person behind him.

A mouth pressed against his ear, breath hot and voice harsh, “Beg me.”

“Please, please, please let me cum, please—“

Josuke’s earlobe got caught between teeth, while the hand tugging on his hair moved to his dick, roughly jerking him off. Josuke woke up to a sudden, crushing elbow to his gut, shrieking in a totally manly way. It was completely dark in his room, but he could make out the black outline of a hulking man rolling around on his bed, snorting like the piggy bitch he was. “Man, I wish I would have turned on the light so I could have seen your face,” the big asshole wheezed, his laugh almost coming out in a stereotypical French ‘honhonhon’.

“JEAN PIERRE POLNAREFF, I’M GONNA LITERALLY MURDER YOU,” Josuke roared, struggling to sit up to push Polnareff’s muscly ass off of him.

Polnareff cackled like a witch, jumping up before Josuke could start punching him, “Up and at them, Josuke. It’s time for our run. I’ll be waiting downstairs.”

After Polnareff retreated, Josuke flopped back down, heart still racing. Waiting for his heart rate to return to normal, he grabbed his phone to check the time. It was 6 o’clock in the godforsaken morning. He regretted many things. He regretted giving Polnareff a key to his house. He especially regretted the dream he woke up from and the puddle of cum that had pooled in his underwear.

He put his pillow over his face and screamed. What a fuckin’ mess.

Three hours later, at a much more acceptable time to be awake, Josuke found himself sleepily watching Pol sashay around his kitchen while making omelets. Polnareff was a nutritionist, gym owner, fitness model, and Josuke’s personal trainer. He’d met Polnareff when he was introduced to his father’s side of the family so many years ago; he had been Jotaro’s roommate in college, and Holly, Josuke’s sister, basically considered Pol to be a second son (much to Jotaro’s chagrin and Polnareff’s delight). So not only did Polnareff wake him up at an ungodly hour twice a week, he got to nag and annoy Josuke at all other times as well.

“I have to say, I’m surprised that I didn’t see your friend in there with you this morning. You two are together a lot.”

Polnareff was keeping his tone casual, but Josuke knew exactly where this was headed, “Me and Oku don’t hang out all the time—“

“Josuke, this is the first morning in almost three months that I have walked into your room to wake you up and didn’t see him,” Polnareff pointed a spatula at him, “Can’t argue with the facts.”

He couldn’t, and Josuke despised it.

Ever since the first night he came over, Okuyasu had kept his word about making sure Josuke wasn’t lonely. Between Arrowhead slowing down their activities between their last tour and recording their next album, and Josuke taking a yearlong vacation, they both found themselves with a lot of free time. So, Okuyasu was stayed the night at least three or four times a week. They got high, played videogames, watched stupid movies, took late night drives together, ate food that was terrible for them. Slept in the same bed, and basically cuddled every night they watched a movie together. You know, normal friend stuff.

People like Okuyasu were so rare in Josuke’s life. He never put him on a pedestal like Josuke was some untouchable god or free ticket to fame. He was so grateful to have a friend that saw past all of his fame and fortune, and saw him as he was: just Josuke. It was wonderful and so refreshing.

However, there was one caveat.

Josuke had found himself head over heels in love with Okuyasu, and had to physically restrain himself from making any moves onto his friend. The better he got to know him, the worse it became. He had a sharp ache in his chest whenever he thought about his feelings, and his brain shrieked KISS HIM KISS HIM KISS HIM anytime Oku’s face got remotely near his, or whenever Oku would look at him with a shy smile, or even when Okuyasu cried over something like shelter animals or sad movies. It was all so endearing and Josuke couldn’t get enough of him. For all his flirtations, and for all of the content in his songs that implied that Josuke was some kind of suave, smooth talker, he couldn’t bring himself to risk the first real friendship he’d had in years.

“So what? We hang out a lot, it’s not a big deal,” Josuke forced his voice to remain neutral, “Didn’t you use to bitch and moan at me about never hanging out with anyone besides you assholes, Jolyne, and Koichi?”

“Ignoring your hurtful words, yes I did complain,” Polnareff flipped both omelets onto separate plates; he placed on in front of Josuke and then sat across in the table from him, resting his chin on the top of his water bottle, “But that’s not my point.”

“Then what is?” Josuke arched an eyebrow at him, daring Polnareff to say what he was thinking.

Polnareff was quiet for a few moments before answering, “You should tell him that you’re in love with him.”

Of course Polnareff knew how Josuke felt. He had been the one who had barged in on Josuke lovingly pushing stray hairs out of Okuyasu’s face while he slept one morning. Josuke blurted out everything in a panic while they went for their run, begging him to not speak of it to anyone, especially Okuyasu.

“Absolutely not,” Josuke said flatly.

“You are fucking up, my friend, but it’s your decision,” Polnareff sat up straight and pointed at the omelet in front of him, “Eat that before it gets cold.”

The rest of the conversation was Polnareff talking about some kind of nonsense, Josuke was only paying half-attention because he was still really tired, hungry, and slightly irritated at the earlier conversation. Yeah, like it was so easy to tell your best friend that he was hot and you wanted to kiss him all over, and you were in love with him, haha, full homo bro—

Josuke was pulled out his thoughts to the sound of his text notification going off. His heart did some weird somersault when he saw that Okuyasu had texted him (Josuke finally got his number when Oku put it in his phone for him):

Oku: mornin dude :D

Oku: u doin anythin tonight?

Josuke: nah I aint got anything going on, why?

Oku: were playin a secret show at echoes bar tonight. u wanna come?

He wants me to come see him play, Josuke wheezed inwardly. He responded immediately:

Josuke: HELL YES I DO

Oku: :D hell yeah dude

Oku: i think yukako is gonna invite koichi too, so ill let hazamada kno that yall are gonna be there. he’ll have ur backstages passes ready.

Oku: also word to the wise, wear shorts and a tanktop. the bar gets super hot during shows. ull die in anything else

The rest of their texts were directions, Josuke saying he was excited, and an abundance of smiley face emotes from Okuyasu.

“Oi! Josuke! Stop ignoring me!”

“Oh shit, sorry dude,” Josuke had completely forgotten Polnareff was there, “Did you ask me something?”

Polnareff pouted, “You are so rude to me. I was asking you if you wanted to get dinner with me, Noriaki, and Jolyne tonight. Jotaro is still out in the field and Mo is doing some college thing, so it’ll just be the four of us.”

Josuke couldn’t stop himself from breaking out into a huge grin, “Sorry, I got plans tonight.”

The upside to having a signature look was that if Josuke had his hair down or in a ponytail, no one recognized him. So when he stood in the very back of Echoes with Koichi, trying to not get trampled by the massive crowd, no one bothered him.

Not that they would’ve anyways. What was happening on stage was infinitely more interesting.

The music was so loud, Josuke could feel it vibrate into his chest. His ears were starting to ring a little, but he didn’t care. Oku’s voice was amazing when he recorded in a studio, but listening to him live was almost like an out of body experience. His voice just crashed over him like the tide, and Josuke wanted it to sweep him out to sea.

Oku hadn’t been lying when he said the club got too hot; all four members of Arrowhead were various states of undress. Josuke could only see half of Yuuya, but he looked like he was naked behind his drum kit. Yukako had her hair up in a high ponytail, wearing ass eating shorts and a cutoff tank top. Keicho was shirtless and in shorts, hair down out of his normal…whatever he had going on there. Oku was dressed more or less the same, but the difference was Okuyasu was infinitely more attractive. Josuke could see the band of his boxer briefs peak up over the waist of his shorts, and licked his lips unconsciously.

Okuyasu was sweaty, loose hairs from his ponytail were falling his face, and looked like he was having a blast, giving all he had and then some. Josuke didn’t think it could’ve been possible, but he fell more in love with him as he watched. All he wanted was to find out what skin that stretched over his hip bones tasted like.

“Koichi, I’m gay.” Josuke moaned.

“What did you say? I can’t hear you,” Koichi called back.

“I said I’m gay!”

Koichi just gave him a very confused look, clearly not understanding what he was saying.

“I’M GAY!” Josuke hollered, grabbing Koichi by the shoulders and shaking him for emphasis.

“Agh! I get it, I get it! Stop!!!”

Yukako noticed them first. After they finished a song, and was in the process of swapping guitars out, Yukako grabbed Okuyasu by the bicep and whispered in his ear. He looked over to the corner Josuke and Koichi were in, and his face lit like the sun. He waved excitedly, which Josuke couldn’t help but wave back, matching his enthusiasm and smile. Okuyasu walked over to a short, sallow looking dude and pointed over towards them. A few minutes later, the roadie appeared beside them, “Here’s your passes, follow me.”

The backstage was kind of cramped, filled with at least a dozen good looking women. Josuke tried to stand away from them, half afraid of being recognized and half wanting to avoid hearing about which band members they wanted to fuck.

When the show ended, the groupies rushed at the bandmembers as they filed off stage. Yukako lips curled into a snarl and elbowed her way over to Koichi; when in front of him, the ice melted and she gave him a sweet smile before planting a kiss on his lips. Koichi froze momentarily before returning the smooch. Josuke had asked Koichi a few weeks ago what was up with him and Yukako. All he got in response was a shrug and a “We’re dating??”

Keicho and Yuuya were wrapped up in all the attention from the groupies, who were fawning over all over them (Yuuya wasn’t naked, and Josuke thanked his lucky stars he didn’t have to see Yuuya’s penis). Girls were too busy playing with Keicho’s hair and rubbing on Yuuya to notice that Okuyasu had quietly slipped in behind them. Good, Josuke sighed with relief, He’ll keep it lowkey.

Which he immediately ruined by shouting, “JOSUKE!” and pounding over to him, nearly knocking Josuke off of his feet with a hug, “YOU CAME!”

Okuyasu was too warm and sweaty, and if there was a god, he would prevent Okuyasu from feeling how hard Josuke was getting from feeling his bare chest press against him. Josuke returned the hug with ferocity, “Of course I did, I said I would.” He pulled back to look Okuyasu in the face, and also prevent his errant boner from rubbing up against him. “It were fantastic, I’m so blown away! You’re amazing, Okuyasu.” Josuke beamed at him, and the tears that filled Okuyasu’s eyes made his stomach flutter.

“You mean that?” he croaked.

“Yeah!”

“Pinky promise?”

Josuke hooked his pinky with Okuyasu’s, “Pinky promise.”

Okuyasu gave him a watery smile before hugging him again, “Thanks. That means a lot, coming from you,” Oku whispered against his shoulder.

If there wasn’t a million pairs of eyes on him, Josuke would have said ‘fuck it’ and kissed Okuyasu right then and there, but he was too chicken. “You’re welcome, Oku,” Josuke pulled away again, “Go shower and then we’ll get out of here.”

“Oh shit,” Okuyasu rubbed the back his neck, looking sheepish, “Sorry, I got like super sweaty and gross.”

Josuke gave him a friendly punch in the arm, “S’fine dude, I don’t care. I’m gonna go smoke, so just come outside when you’re done.” Okuyasu made an assenting noise before jogging off to go shower. Pointedly ignoring Yuuya’s waggling eyebrows and some indecipherable look from Keicho, Josuke swiveled on his heels and left.

It was late summer, but the air felt a 1000x times cooler than it did inside. Josuke had been enjoying his few minutes of peace and quiet while he sat the backdoor’s staircase when he heard someone walk out behind him. He almost greeted Okuyasu, but an unfamiliar voice spoke.

“Why are you here?”

That was not Okuyasu.

Josuke turned to find a still shirtless Keicho peering down at him, hair hanging in his face, unlit cigarette in his hand. “Oku invited me,” Josuke replied, not liking the look on Keicho’s face.

“Why?”

What fuckin’ kind of question is that?? “Because we’re friends? And I told him I wanted to see you guys perform sometime?”

Keicho lit his cigarette and took a drag, his eyes never leaving Josuke’s, “Why?”

Josuke was about .3 seconds away from losing his temper, “Why what?? What the fuck are you asking me, dude??”

“Why are you friends with him?”

It was a huge effort to not start shrieking into the night, “Because he’s a cool guy? And funny? And I enjoy his company? What fucking kind of question is that?” Josuke snubbed out his cigarette, drawing himself up to full height, “What exactly are you trying to say here?”

“Okuyasu doesn’t have friends, and I don’t trust you,” Keicho responded coldly, “I wanna know what you’re after.”

“I’m just after his friendship, you clown!” Josuke exclaimed, rapidly losing his patience, “Is that so fuckin’ hard to believe??”

Before Keicho could retort, the door banged open. “Keicho, you got girls here who wanna inflict terrible things upon your penis, you better get in here and give ‘em what they want,” Yuuya grinned, leaning against the door frame. Purple bruises marred his neck and Josuke could hear whining from behind him.

Without another word to Josuke, Keicho dropped his cigarette, ground it out with his heel, and shouldered past Yuuya. The door swung closed, and Josuke exploded, “What the fuck is his deal??”

Yuuya shrugged, “That’s just Keicho.”

Josuke pointed at Yuuya, “No, that’s just being a cock goblin. I’ve never done anything to that guy, why’s he being such a dickhead??”

“I’ve known Keicho and Okuyasu since I was about 12,” Yuuya started, “There’s a lot of reasons why they’re both the way they are. Good or bad, right or wrong.” He kicked an empty cigarette pack off of the stairs, “Keicho’s got this thing about controlling things and people,” Yuuya took a seat on the top step, “Oku being with you all the time prevents Keicho from having his brother under his thumb.”

“With the way Oku talks about him, it sounds like Keicho fuckin’ hates him.”

Yuuya shrugged again, “Keicho makes it a point to be an absolute bastard to Oku most of the time. Though, he did take a knife to the gut when Akira tried to stab Okuyasu, so that’s something.”

Josuke was thoroughly confused, “Why?”

“Obligation to their mom, I imagine. Keicho got really drunk once and told me that before she died, she made him promise that he would always look out for Okuyasu. So he does, in some way or another.” Yuuya sprung up to his feet, “I will say this, Josuke…it’s nice that Okuyasu’s got a friend not linked to his brother in one way or another. Good for him, ya? But,” He stared Josuke down, all friendliness gone, “I’m pretty perceptive on how you feel, so no need to try and deny it to me. It’s obvious to everyone save for Okuyasu himself and probably Keicho. So, this is a warning: Don’t hurt Oku, or I will find you and whoop your ass. We clear?”

I rather die than hurt him. “Crystal.”

Before either of them could say anything else, Okuyasu walked out of the backdoor with a bruised right cheek, bloody knuckles, and a nose dripping red, “Ready to bounce?”

“Dude, super fuck your brother.”

Okuyasu sat in Josuke’s kitchen while Josuke did his best to doctor him up. He waved a hand, “S’fine, we do this sometimes. He gets too mouthy and I gotta stand my ground,” Okuyasu hissed when Josuke sprayed antiseptic on his oozing knuckles.

“You still haven’t told me what he said.”

As he rarely did, Okuyasu evaded the question, “S’not important. What matters is that I shut ‘em up and he won’t be running that big, stupid mouth of his for a while.”

According to Oku, Keicho walked away from that scuffle with a split lip, black eyes, and probably bruises all over his chest. Not that would’ve deterred the groupies from trying to touch his dick anyways, Okuyasu had theorized on the way to Josuke’s house (Josuke had insisted on driving and went extra slow in fear that he would fuck up Oku’s baby), so Keicho couldn’t be too sore at him for long.

Instead of pushing the matter any further, Josuke took to wrapping Oku’s knuckles, “Tell me if I’m not doing this right.”

“Wrap it a little tighter, and you’ll be aces.”

After he finished, Josuke got up and took an ice gel pack out of his fridge. Thank God Polnareff had insisted he buy one a few months ago, “I’ve been in a fair amount of fights, but that’s the first time I’ve ever had to bandage someone else’s hands.”

“Somehow that doesn’t surprise me,” Okuyasu flexed his fingers, pleased with how the bandages felt, “You did good kid, I used to wrap ‘em up like this when I did bare knuckle boxing matches.”

Josuke walked back over to him, cold compress wrapped in a dishtowel, “You used to box?”

Okuyasu winced as Josuke pressed it to his right cheek, “Yeah, I did underground fights for money. Helped rent out the studio when we recorded our first demo.”

“That’s unsurprising,” Josuke sat on the edge of his table so he could hold the pack to Oku’s face without getting too tired, “You still box?”

“Nah, not really. When I hit the gym, I just beat on the punching bag instead. Keicho’s good practice too,” he snorted. Josuke rolled his eyes; Okuyasu yawned and then gave him a lazy smile, “Josuke, why am I so sleepy right now?”

Josuke peered down at him, eyebrows raised, “Oh, I don’t know. Could it have been the fact that you just played a show in a cramped, hot bar, and then got into a fist fight with your older brother?”

“You may be onto something, boss.” Okuyasu exhaled, closing his eyes and pressing his face slightly into the cold pack. After a few minutes of quiet, he spoke softly, “I know I said this earlier, but m’really glad you came tonight…meant a lot to me…I ain’t never had a friend who actually cared enough to come to a show jus’ for me.” Okuyasu raised his bandaged right hand and placed it over the hand that held the compress to his face, rubbing circles into the skin, “Thanks.”

Josuke does the stupidest thing he has ever done in his entire 24 years of living: he leans over and kisses Okuyasu right on the mouth.

It feels like time stopped before Josuke pulls away. Okuyasu’s eyes are wide open, face glowing red like he has a sunburn. He stands up, startled, “I—I gotta go, I-“ he’s tripping over himself, the chair, and hightails it out of the front door.

Josuke’s brain takes a minute to grind back into motion, and he runs after Oku, “Wait! Dude I’m—“

By the time he gets outside, he can make out Oku’s taillights buzzing down the road.

He stands on his front porch for a long time, staring out into the street, hoping, begging to see Oku’s car return. For him to jump out of his car and holler, “IT’S JUST A PRANK, BRO” before bounding up the steps to return Josuke’s kiss with gusto.

Rain starts falling, and Josuke remains rooted the spot. Dimly, he registers that he is now soaked to the bone, and Okuyasu was not coming back. He did it. He ruined his friendship, because he couldn’t fucking help himself. He couldn’t just be satisfied with how things were.

In a numb haze, Josuke walks back inside, closing the door and locking it behind him with a soft click. He turns the shower on the hottest setting he could stand, sits in the floor as hot water pours all over him, and just trembles.

When the water runs cold, he finally steps out. Mechanically, Josuke pulled on some old sweats and his favorite t-shirt. He can’t bear to look at his bed, let alone sleep in it, knowing that it was bound to smell like Okuyasu, and that was something he couldn’t even begin to handle.

The couch it was. Josuke checked his phone, hoping to have missed a call or text from Oku, but nothing greeted him; he turned it off and threw it across the room. Curled up under a blanket, he listened to the rain pelt the windows, and finally allowed himself to cry.

Something was banging against the front door.

Josuke jerked awake, feeling awful. It took a few seconds for his brain to process where he was, and when he remembered, he had to quickly wipe his tears. He had to keep it together.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” Josuke mumbled to no one, cocooning himself in his blanket. The banging was incessant; Josuke figured it was a drunk Tamami who had forgotten his key to Josuke’s front door back at his apartment. It was something that occurred more regularly than it should. As he passed the entrance to the kitchen, the oven’s clock blared the time: 3:24 am. He was going to murder whoever it was.

He unlocked the front door and jerked it open, ready to snarl something at whomever made the mistake of waking him up, when he came face to face with Okuyasu.

Oku looked fucking awful. Soaked to the bone with chattering teeth, red-rimmed puffy eyes; it made Josuke die a little on the inside to see him in such a sorry state, “Jesus Christ Oku, how long have you been out here??” Josuke reached to pull him inside, but Okuyasu smacked his hand away. Tears threatened, and anger rose up inside him like bile, “Why did you come back?” he asked, placing his head into his hands so Okuyasu couldn’t see his face. After what feels like an eternity stretches on, Josuke half-contemplates just slamming the door closed, so Okuyasu would be spared the trouble of having to devastate Josuke anymore.

“Kiss me again.”

Slowly, Josuke lowered his hands to look Oku in the face. He could see that Okuyasu was crying, tears running hot down his scared face. “I’m sorry for leavin’, I’m sorry for runnin’. I’m a fuckin’ idiot fool,” the words burst out of Okuyasu like a dam had broken, “You’re the most perfect thing on this stupid planet, I’ve been crazy over you ever since we first met. I didn’t know if you were makin’ fun of me or somethin’ when you kissed me, so I got scared and ran, but I just ended up making you upset, which is—“ His breath started hitching and he was crying even harder, “The last thing— I ever w-wanna do is hurt y-y-you. Y-you m-mean everyth-thing to me.”

Josuke also had tears running down his face; he pulled Oku into a tight hug and ran his fingers through his hair, shushing him softly, “It’s okay, don’t cry.”

“I’m sorry,” he wailed, face buried into Josuke’s neck, “Please forgive me, I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

“I forgive you, it’s okay. You came back.”

“It’s not okay,” Okuyasu pulled himself away to look Josuke in the eyes, “I hurt you.” Hesitantly, he wiped the tears off of Josuke’s face. Josuke couldn’t stop himself anymore; he pressed his lips against Okuyasu’s. This time, his kiss was returned enthusiastically, and it made Josuke’s very soul sing. Taking great care to not trip over something, Josuke lead Okuyasu into the house without breaking their kiss, closing the door behind him. Josuke couldn’t get enough of how Okuyasu tasted; the kisses were sweet, chaste, and everything Josuke imagined it would be like.

“Do you wanna stay the night?” Josuke murmured against Oku’s lips.

“Yeah, if that’s okay with you.”

Josuke pulled away and kissed the tip of Okuyasu’s nose, took his hand, and led him upstairs.

After Okuyasu’s quick shower, they found themselves tangled up in each other’s limbs, kissing just as slow and gently as before. “Hey Josuke,” Okuyasu’s whispered, voice raspy.

“Yeah?”

“M’really tired and stuff,” Oku stifled a yawn, “so I dunno if we should talk about this now or—“

Josuke brushed a thumb across Oku’s cheek, “I think we should wait until tomorrow morning, after we get some sleep. Okay?” He pressed a kiss onto Okuyasu’s forehead, which turns warm underneath his lips.

“’Kay,” he mumbled, pressing his hot face into Josuke’s neck, “Uhm, I do got one question though, and I don’t wanna wait to ask.”

Josuke pulled back to look him in the face, “Yeah, what’s up?”

Okuyasu was blood red, looking rather meek. “Are we boyfriends now?” he asked softly, as if he scared to hear a rejection.

Butterflies had taken up permanent residence in Josuke’s stomach, and it was taking everything in him to not start wiggling around like an excited puppy, “Do you want us to be boyfriends?”

He got an enthusiastic nod in reply; Oku was too shy to say it out loud, but he did grab one of Josuke’s hands so he could kiss his knuckles.

A grin spread across Josuke’s face, “I guess that makes us boyfriends then.”

The smile that lit up Okuyasu’s face would be one that Josuke wanted tattooed to the inside of his mind, so he could remember it forever.

The slow, lazy kisses they traded relaxed him enough that sleep was moments away. Faintly, before succumbing, Josuke was certain he heard “I love you” whispered into his ear.

Up in the sky

These are the facts, as they happened.

It had been about an hour and a half since we took off, and they'd served dinner, which I ate with satisfaction prior to brushing my teeth. I had finally put on my ear muffs and covered my head with a blanket, after taking two hydroxyzine to help me fall asleep. As I was drifting in the direction of sleep, I heard on the overhead, "There is a passenger in need of medical assistance. If you have medical training and can assist, please proceed to the back of the plane."

First I pulled the blanket off my head. Next I pulled off my ear muffs. I thought for a second, and then looked around. Considering doctors are a dime a dozen in the developing African nation we just left from, I expected to see 20 people standing up and proceeding to the back of the plane.

No one.

Alright, here we go, I thought.

Upon arriving to the back area of the plane, where the attendants prepare food, I found a 40-year old female missionary sitting on one of the flight attendant's pull down chairs, with several of her missionary lady friends surrounding her. There was also what appeared to be a doctor who had responded from first class to come help. I listened in for a second, and was able to gather that the patient ("Grace") had been feeling nauseas a couple hours before the flight, and upon boarding, became vomiting repeatedly and having diarrhea too.

I discussed the case with the doctor. When the doctor said, "If we had some zofran," I said, "I have some." Before I could go get it though, one of the flight attendants suddenly produced a first aid kit in a long metal box.

At around that time, another flight attendant I did not recognize suddenly appeared, looked at me, and said, "She's a doctor," pointing at the African doctor. I immediately responded to her, "Yes. I am too."

We broke the seal on the first aid kit, and opened it.

Quite the curious hodgepodge of items that medical kit was. There were odd non-sterile bandages with "Made in China. Guaranteed sterile" on them, drugs that the doctor and I had never even heard of before, syringes without needles, and quite a few other items equally perplexing. There was an inventory list too, which stated "injectable promethazine" was supposedly included inside. While we began the search for the promethazine, I mentioned that promethazine is an extremely dangerous drug, and can lead to extreme necrosis if not properly administered deep IM or IV.

Luckily, we didn't find the injectable promethazine.

Shortly after I grabbed the oral zofran from my bag, the head flight attendant started asking us if we needed to do an emergency landing.

I had already talked to the patient, checked skin turgor, asked her about when she last urinated, and how dry her mouth was.

I looked at the doctor while answering the flight attendant, as if for consensus, and stated that I thought we could try to manage the patient for now, without any drastic measures. We could try doing oral rehydration and zofran. I mean, where were we going to do an emergency landing right now, Libya?

Apparently one of the missionary friends of the patient was a nurse, and she spoke up to state as much. She asked if we had any IV fluids in the kit. Yes, we replied, but only 500cc. We would try to manage with zofran by mouth first.

About the time that we had come to that conclusion, the patient started losing consciousness.

The doctor and I immediately looked at each other and said, "Ok. IV fluids."

I then addressed the nurse and the doctor and said, "So which one of us is best at IV catheters?"

For the nurse, that seemed to be a call to action. She said, "I got it. Give me the fluids and the line."

I told her I would help her out, as I'm also a Paramedic. I was shuffling through the equipment trying to find what we needed, noting what we didn't have as I compiled supplies. "Don't have a tourniquet," I mentioned in passing. "Okay, we can cut a glove in half and use that," replied the doctor. We discussed IV sizes for a moment, and eventually I handed her a 20 gauge IV. After we found the alcohol preps, she began the IV placement process as I looked for tape to tape the IV.

When eventually I compiled all the IV secural supplies, I looked over at the nurse.

Things didn't look good.

She was inserting a bare IV needle into the patient's R hand vein.

First, I said, "So, you're going to put a 20 in the hand?" She replied, "Yes, I do this all the time."

I said, "Ok, I guess we can put 500cc through the hand. But you don't have a catheter on the needle."

She said, "I thought we'd just do a straight stick."

I didn't continue to mention that the needle inside an IV catheter is actually way too small diameter to actually give fluids through, and the only purpose of it is to confirm placement of the IV in a vein by showing a "flash of blood."

As her "attempt" failed, I thought to myself, "Oh shit. I'm the only one on this plane who can do this shit."

I grabbed another 20 and tied the glove high up on the arm to look at the AC. First, I could palpate it well. I said, "She's got a good AC."

The doctor thought to mention that I didn't have gloves on, which isn't all that abnormal for me. I said it was okay.

Then the glove-tourniquet popped off, and I couldn't palpate anything the next time I tied it.

Finally, "Ok, I feel it again."

I went in.

Nothing, no flash.

Shit.

Dug around a bit.

Nothing, no flash.

Doctor, nurse, two missionary friends, patient, three flight attendants all watching, hoping I can get it.

Nothing.

I palpate the vein again, and its several mm medial to wear I am.

All turbulence must have led to some patient movement, and I was in the wrong spot. I could move through the subnormal space to get over there, but it was a long shot.

I tried, and I got flash. I was in the vein.

Trying to advance the catheter off the needle, it wouldn't advance completely. All of a sudden things didn't look as good. Too late though, because I'd already said out loud, "I got it." Had to make it work now.

Pulling the needle all the way out and leaving the catheter in place, I put the needle in a sharps container and noted no blood was flowing out - meaning it wasn't in the vein. I retracted it a bit, and sure enough, blood flow.

All over my hands.

It was in, but just barely.

I held the IV steady against the patient's arm, as the nurse hooked up the IV fluid line.

I instructed one of the missionary friends to squeeze the saline box - that's right, IV fluids in Africa comes in a box more often than a bag - in order to speed up the infusion. It was slow progress, but after we had infused about 200cc of fluid, the patient's mental status changed, and she even stated out loud that she felt better.

Unfortunately though, the fluid wasn't flowing anymore.

I didn't note any infiltration, so it didn't seem like the IV was bad. We turned our focus to the box and line, and first the nurse uncapped some valve that neither of us had seen on an IV line before. We thought that might be helping initially.

My hands were tied, but next I told the doctor to check the roller clamp. She said, "it's up high, but it seems to just roll when I move it higher."

"That means it's completely unclamped," I told her.

Eventually the nurse suggested positional occlusion, which I had considered but not stated out loud. Moving the patient's arm around a bit, we started to get better flow.

It probably took 45 minutes to infuse 350 cc.

Eventually I had the nurse take over holding the IV in place, because I had noticed a BP cuff in the first aid kit and wanted to check the patient's blood pressure on the other arm.

When I did, I found it to be 92/60. The flight attendant asked, "Is that bad."

The doctor spoke up, saying, "Technically it's within normal range....."

I was thinking, "Bad."

After we finished our IV therapy, the doctor and I put together a treatment plan. Missionary friends had cleared out a row for the patient to lie semi-sitting. The doctor had asked if the patient could lie in first class, but of course, that wasn't happening.

Before we could enact our treatment plan, someone came back and asked for the doctor's help, as another patient had a "severe head ache." Jokingly, I turned to the doctor and said, "This is how it starts. One person gets sick, and then all the other passengers see it and decide they're sick too. I've seen this movie."

The doctor grabbed the blood pressure cuff to go triage our second patient, as I stayed with Grace and told her what the plan was. We're going to have her chew the zofran, and try to sip some fluids, and get some rest.

She was dizzy on owalking, but we guided her back to her row. I was a bit displeased to see the missionaries were lying her down - that's not exactly the position I wanted.

"We don't really want her lying down, so if she vomits, she can breathe it in."

As was happening increasingly, the nurse slighted my advice and stated, "No, I'll keep an eye on her."

Ok fine.

At about that time, I returned to the back and found the African doctor. She asked me what specialty I was in and where I practiced. I said, "Emergency medicine." She said, "Oh wonderful. I'm an internist, so this isn't my specialty."

She disappeared, and I never saw her again.

Less than an hour later, Grace was vomiting again. She vomited all the fluid that the nurse had coached her to sip and a bit more, probably 150 cc. Grace said to me, "It feels like bile." I looked at the vomit and said, "Some of it is bile, but regardless, you're losing fluid, and we don't want that."

That was the end of hour four. It was an 8 hour flight.

Grace's blood pressure held for hour five, and six, and we administered several more doses of zofran.

As her BP's continued to hold just above 100, I instructed the nurse to keep having Grace sip water whenever her nausea level was less than 6/10 - in coordination with our zofran doses. The nurse pushed back. I said, "It's the bacteria that's causing her to need to vomit, not the water." The nurse said, "Yes, but the water isn't helping."

I tried to be patient with the nurse and explain on multiple occasions (I was visiting the patient every 30 minutes or so, taking her vitals by putting my watch on her wrist as a heart rate monitor and doing a manual BP), that the patient had lost a lot of volume, and we had only placed 500cc of it.

She was in a very fragile state, even if it didn't seem like it. Nonetheless, the patient was resting, so I let her rest. I communicated that I was hesitant to dose her at more than one zofran per hour - which was already way too much considering this was the 8mg zofran tablets.

At hour five of the flight, things took a turn for the worse when Grace started having severe diarrhea again. She went into the bathroom and flushed three times.

I took Grace's blood pressure again, and it had dropped precipitously. 88/54.

She was now hypotensive. Her heart rate was also over 100, as the heart tried to compensate for the lack of volume.

I looked at the nurse and her young missionary accompany, and I said, "This is a very unique situation. Not having the medication you need."

I looked down, and thought. Then I looked up at Grace, and, speaking very softly, I said, "Grace we just gave you a Zofran 40 minutes ago. I know your nausea is a 7/10, but I'm going to have to have you take another Zofran, so that you can drink some water. As a doctor, I know exactly how much fluid is in your arteries and veins right now, and it's not good. We have to replace some of that."

Before Grace could take my next Zofran, she was back in the bathroom again having more diarrhea. When she came back out, she was in and our of consciousness.

I had put up with the nurse's bullshit enough, and now I was taking charge. "She's goning to stay right here. We're going to do another zofran. And in 10 minutes were going to start pushing fluids. Otherwise, we're going to wind up right back where we started, and this time we won't even have 500cc of fluids to save us."

And that's what we did.

One of the flight attendants who was hovering asked if we should give her some Sprite.

"No, the sugar makes diarrhea worse. What she really needs is Pedialite, but I doubt anyone has any."

Someone mentioned as an aside that we could put some salt in her water. I said okay, we'll do that (I'm usually not opposed to something that is sound and can't hurt). When the flight attendant brought.a couple packets of salt over, the young missionary girl opened one up and started to pour it in the water.

"No," I said. "Don't bother. It will just sink to the bottom." Then, I had Grace protrude her tongue, and I poured salt on her tongue, after which she drank some water. I was sincerely hoping it wouldn't cause her to vomit, and I guess since we had so much zofran on board, it didn't."

Another flight attendant appeared and handed me a vomit bag to write on. "Can you please write what is going on with the patient so the pilot can radio the tower."

I wrote,

"Hypotensive patient. Losing consciousness. Severely dehydrated."

Then, I thought for a second, and realized I hadn't really followed traditional medical report formatting. So I added,

"40-year old female. Severe nausea and vomiting."

Alright, that spruced things up.

I read it to the nurse, and she seemed to agree with me that what I wrote was a pretty concise and accurate depiction of things.

As we neared landing, we moved Grace back to a row and had her sit up so we could buckle her in for landing. I sat next to Grace, and as I monitored her level of consciousness and pulse, I finished up a report I was writing in my notebook to give to the paramedics when we arrived in Dublin. It was mostly her demographic info, allergies and medical conditions (none), and a narrative followed by vital signs.

The chief flight attendant came over and let us know that paramedics would be coming onto the plane. They would need to do their own assessment, the flight attendant said. "Of course. That's fine." I said. "But I need you to make sure that there aren't all sorts of people standing in the isle blocking their way," I replied. She said, "Of course. No one wills and."

As we landed, I took the stethoscope back from the nurse, who had been holding it for me. I put it around my neck and said, "This will make me look a bit more official."

After we landed, the flight attendants read a message that literally said, "Thank you for choosing Easet African Airlines for your flight today. Whether your final destination is the Big City or you're continuing on, we thank you for your loyalty."

That's when I realized the flight attendants were going to do a crew change, and those with me now were probably most interested in getting the hell out of there.

And that's about how it went. I walked up front to the door, and repeatedly asked the flight attendants to have all the passengers sit. At one point a man even charged up to me with his bag, and said, "Big City?"

No, she informed him, we're not in the Big City yet.

The young missionary girl came to the front, and I told her, "Get these people out of the isle. I'm about to yell at all of them in 30 seconds here."

She tried to, but it's hard persuading Africans sometimes.

The door was opened, and immediately outside I saw workers from the Dublin crew. I couldn't tell who was EMS, so I started hinting at them and saying, "Are you a paramedic? Are you a medic?" NO, no, they said.

They pointed down at the end of a set of stairs that had been attackhed to the door, and I saw an ambulance. I saw what I thought might be too paramedics still sitting int he carin.

It seemed a natural connection of dots for me to hop out the door and head down to give them report and accompany them up, but when I did, the flight attendants immediately yelled at me, "No, no, come back. You cannot walk out there."

Sure were better at keeping people off the starts then out of the isle.

I checked the isle once more, and I saw a lot of people still in the isle.

I started yelling. Oh shit. I'm yelling on a plane.

About that time, I realized they were actually bringing Grace to me.

Probably not a bad idea.

Grace arrived, and almost immediately thereafter, the Paramedics were at the door. I addressed the one who arrived first, and gave report. He said, "So it looks like she needs a visit to the hospital and some IV fluids."

I said, "Yes, definitely. Can you give her some fluids en route to the hospital."

"No," he said. "We don't do IV fluids here. WE could give some zofran, but sounds like you've already done that."

Oh wow.

While I was hoping things were over, they weren't.

This was supposed to be a re-fuelign stop and passengers weren't supposed to be leaving the plane. Grace, and the missionary who had been elected to go with her, were having their passports and tickets analyzed and photographed.

Geez, come on.

As the EMS team and I wanted, I handed my report to them.
