Over more than three decades, Oxbow’s experimental rock has sounded like nothing else. Anchored by Eugene Robinson’s howls – a force so loose and boundless, so uncontained and domineering that one can hardly believe it acts as stabiliser – the band has stuck with a sort of rock that is noisy, trudging and punky, though also informed by blues and jazz. For me, however, Oxbow’s great mastery lies in their use of sparsity and ambience. In dropping into lengthy, spacious phases, the group subdues listeners before unleashing havoc with incendiary and shocking power; producing musical explosions that really, truly explode.
