1. hi, would like to ask if you know of any fic about the sunshot campaign after a failed golden core transfer. thank you :)

i wonder what an au where jc dies after the fall of lotus pier would be like. wwx goes back to save jc and he’s just that bit too late, wen chao had made wen zhuliu crush his gc and then immediately killed him. it takes everything wn has to drag wwx away and he eventually has to knock him out. when wwx wakes up he’s in yiling and wq is sitting by his bedside. without even glancing up from the herbs she’s currently chopping she tells him that she’ll kill him if he so much as makes a threatening move in her direction.
now, one of my favourite head canons is that wwx is a massive fan of wq’s work. there was no oh whoops i conveniently stumbled across your gc transfer theory. no, yzy figured out that whipping wwx didnt actually stop his behaviour so once she decided to try and make him sort books in their library instead. jokes on her, wwx read all of wq’s published work and a bunch of other cultivators’ too and he started actively going to hang out in the library after.
anyway! wwx wakes up sees wq and very much does not fanboy over her bc uhhh jc just died and so did everyone else. instead he forces himself to take the time ot work through his feelings. jyl is safe in meishan and she’ll probably be safe there for a long while -- everyone knew yzy and jfm’s relationship was bad so there’s no reason why the wens would think to look for jyl at her mother’s maiden sect. but,,,, she will be the new sect leader. with jc gone there’s no one else and jyl was never meant to be sect leader -- she was like her father in personality, but lacked his hidden strength and spine. how could she when she was too weak to back up her words with force? with her weak core and poor health, she was always the target of assassins and kidnappers and now that jyl has to step up to be sect leader it’s going to be worse.
and wwx has already broken his promise to jfm and yzy -- he hasn’t been able to protect jc, wasn’t able to stop him from abandoning wwx in that market, wasn’t able to stop him from going back to lotus pier, wasn’t able to stop the wens from killing him -- but he can save jyl.
he has to make a choice, right here and right now. he can step up and be the strength behind jyl’s words and stand behind her like his father did to jfm or he can give her all of his strength so she can stand by herself. he can slip off the bed and kowtow and beg wq to transfer his golden core to his shijie or he can make sure no one ever gets close enough to her that she’ll fear the weakness of her own golden core. in either situation, he has nothing but jyl’s life and safety to care about and he will never think of anything else again.

ep 32 (3/3): BRUTAL
Tumblr media
in the book it was said that wwx was 'half-dead with fear' when he heard this. I loved the phrase
Tumblr media
oh NOW you're telling him to play? lwj you're at some kind of crisis here you don't know WHAT you want
Tumblr media
on my first watch I remember so clearly thinking 'oh teehee I've seen the spoilers there's nothing to surprise me only to GASP when this shot happened
I can tell it's su she's stupid upper lip and stupid nose too. he has very distinctive lower facial features
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was fully sobbing by this point so idk if I have any more commentary beyond *whimpering noises* look how terrified they are...that's their big sister
Tumblr media
pretty fucked up that he's a jiang sect member
Tumblr media
oohh, this shot is devastating. seeing him from across the battlefield, in this one instant, they're together again, and then-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this shot KILLS me. I know I talk a lot about wwx but jc loves jyl so much. he loves her so much. that's his big sister too. part of the reason the estrangement is so painful is because I get it. I get his anger and his violence and his bitterness. I don't agree with how he handled it, but I understand it
Tumblr media
ohh this shot
honestly it looks a little wonky. there have been several shots this episode that have looked awkward. but who cares
Tumblr media
I've been looking forward to the postres arc because it's not as relentlessly sad but I'm going to miss jyl SO much. look at her. she deserved the world
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is another line that slaughters me. she refers to wwx earlier at jinlintai, but this can also refer to their entire relationship. despite his closeness with jyl, wwx has often avoided true vulnerability or honesty with her. especially recently, for political reasons - stepping back, offering formality, running off, slipping away, bouncing her questions back to her. even with this person who's the closest he has to a mother, he couldn't sit down with her and entirely be with her in the way she wanted them all to be. and that hurt her! she wanted that closeness for all three of them, for the rest of their lives. oh jyl im so sorry you all couldn't make it in this lifetime
Tumblr media
and this. fuck
Tumblr media
oh! that WAS the brother of the archer! it was mentioned in the book but I couldn't remember if it was canon to here as well. ugh, how appropriate it was for revenge
Tumblr media
HEY. DON'T PLAY THAT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen a really angry post (in the lwj tag no less) trying to put this situation into a modern context and it characterized wwx as super careless and irresponsible and uncommunicative, who was directly the cause of jyl running into 'a gang fight' and 'getting caught in the crossfire' idk it was super defensive of jc punching wwx but I think it misrepresented a lot of details unfairly. like this is a really complicated and painful situation for EVERYONE that wwx does bear some responsibility for, even if it happened due to other people's decisions besides him. and also he was trying to save innocent people from being murdered, idc how little info jc had about the state of wwx's core he DID know that and he simply didn't care or like try to extend some sympathy and support for him? that's like one of the most understandable goals...ever
anyway saying that wwx was directly responsible for jyl's death is simply untrue. she chose to come to the fight (HOW DID SHE GET THERE??? HOW DID SHE KNOW ABOUT IT??? WHERE'S HER GUARDS??? UNIMPORTANT). she came to look for him, sure, but he never wanted her anywhere near it. she was injured by something they thought was under wwx's control, true. but she died because she chose wwx over herself
that's not something he had any control over. and to hold that over his head when there was nothing he could have done once he realized what was happening, for someone who already bears a lot of guilt for simply surviving/being loved/being taken off the streets, it's just a horrifically cruel thing to put on him. and hey, grief doesn't always make sense. but I understand completely why wwx did what he did next. and after he comes back to life, it's even more obvious how much he needs his close relationships to be with people who don't hold anything over him or blame him for simply being alive or demand things from him that he simply can't give
Tumblr media
oh....
Tumblr media
wwx kills this guy with his bare hands but like. who cares, right? no focus is on this man at all, curiously. jc could have blamed him instead. but he seems wholly convinced that every single bad thing that's ever happened to him was wwx's fault. to be fair, they don;t know about the second flautist yet so it doesn't look great for him, but also...you know how much your sister and brother loved each other! dude!
anyway i feel wretched
personal hightlights (what a joke. no this was a good episode)
god. "I want to stay with him a bit longer" and jyls' face when she sees wwx
madam jin breaking down and sobbing once she leaves the room
the heroic music setting wwx up as the villain of the story is a REALLY good touch
white paint on wwx's face <3
the cry-laughing
all of his lines on the roof but especially the ones about how he has to be careful who he hurts even though anyone can try to kill him with impunity and 'your hatred and admiration both come so cheap!' + the significance that has for wx
pulling out the arrow and killing the archer with it was BALLER
jc holding jyl in his arms is an unforgettable image

A second chance
ScarletRuby19 over on Twitter commissioned me for a Chengxuan fic where JZX survives and comes to Lotus Pier where JC and JZX bond, first over JL and then JYL, before they fall in love. Cue some angst and doubt, over whether they are allowed this happiness before they decide that, yes. JYL would want them to be happy. Plus a little bonus at the end where WWX finds out and Madam Jin doting on JC. I hope you like it! It’s a little over 5k, so you can also read it here on AO3.
Jiang Cheng is standing in the ruins of his home and he doesn’t know where he should even start. Just yesterday he added a plate for his sister, setting it up next to their parents and just the thought makes Jiang Cheng want to curl up and die. Or maybe just sleep for a very, very long time.
Let someone else shoulder the responsibility for once.
But he doesn’t even get that, because a disciple comes running up to him. It’s always bad news when people run up to him.
“What?” Jiang Cheng snaps out before the disciple even comes to a stop, and when he does, he has to bend over to catch his breath first.
“Sect Leader, Jin Zixuan is here.”
Jiang Cheng blinks, once, twice and then a third time for good measure.
“He is what?” he finally gets out and the disciple points back to where he came from.
“He just landed, a baby strapped to his chest.”
Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng thinks, and it’s that thought that finally gets him to move.
He runs off, the disciple close behind him, and Jiang Cheng comes to a stop when his eyes fall on Jin Zixuan, like his disciple said, chalk white in his face, sweat on his brow, swaying on his feet and a baby strapped to his chest.
“You’re not dead,” is the first thing Jiang Cheng says to him and he’s met with a grimace at that.
“Wishing I were right about now,” Jin Zixuan gives back, panting heavily and when his knees give out on him, Jiang Cheng is there to catch him.
“I don’t understand,” Jiang Cheng admits, one hand under Jin Zixuan’s shoulder to support him, and one hand on Jin Ling’s head.
“Wen Ning killed you,” Jiang Cheng says once he safely guided Jin Zixuan to sit down right where he stood and Jin Zixuan lets out a snort that turns into a pained grunt.
“Wishing he did right about now,” Jin Zixuan says again with a grimace and then he sighs when Jin Ling starts to squirm in the harness. “Help me with this,” Jin Zixuan pants out, getting started on undoing the straps that hold Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng is quick to assist him.
He doesn’t mention how much Jin Zixuan’s hands shake.
What he does mention is the steadily growing patch of blood on his robe.
“What the fuck,” Jiang Cheng breathes out and then turns towards his disciple. “Get Jiang Sushan, right now.”
The disciple runs off without comment and Jiang Cheng turns back around to Jin Zixuan, just in time to have Jin Ling deposited in his arms.
“What is going on?” Jiang Cheng whispers and Jin Zixuan presses his lips together.
“I survived, if only barely. And I can’t stay at Koi Tower. I think—I think Jin Guangyao and Jin Zixun were working together. I can’t—I don’t trust him. I can’t stay there. Jin Ling shouldn’t be around him,” he pants out and Jiang Cheng looks down at the tiny baby in his arms. “My mother sent me away.”
“Why come here?” Jiang Cheng dumbly asks, but it’s all a bit too much right now.
“You’re her brother,” Jin Zixuan presses out. “You’re his uncle. Where else would I go?”
His answer takes Jiang Cheng aback, because it sounds like Jin Zixuan didn’t even consider going anywhere else, and it makes a ball of dread settle in Jiang Cheng’s stomach.
“I have nothing to offer you. Look around,” he says and points at the still slightly smoking ruins of Lotus Pier. “I have no resources, no stable home, nothing. Why come here?”
Jin Zixuan levels him with a look Jiang Cheng didn’t know he could make and repeats “You’re her sister, you’re his uncle. Where else would I go?”
Jiang Cheng opens his mouth to argue, but before he can find the words, Jin Ling lets out a discontented noise and Jiang Cheng’s attention is immediately redirected.
“I don’t know what to do,” Jin Zixuan whispers and he sounds as honest as Jiang Cheng has ever heard him. “She’s gone and I don’t know what to do.”
Jiang Cheng’s head snaps back up, just in time to watch Jin Zixuan slump back, his injury and the exhaustion clearly getting the better of him, but before Jiang Cheng has time to panic, he catches sight of Jiang Sushan rushing up to them.
“I don’t know, either,” Jiang Cheng whispers and then he makes place for the healer, Jin Ling cradled protectively to his chest.
He doesn’t have a goddamn clue what to do either.
~*~*~
Jiang Sushan forbids Jin Zixuan from standing up until the hole in his stomach has healed. The hole in his stomach. Jiang Cheng feels sick just thinking about it, and he tries very hard not to imagine how it happened.
But with Jin Zixuan forced into bedrest, Jiang Cheng spends more time in the infirmary than he ever cared to do before. But Jin Zixuan wants to see his son, and Jiang Cheng can barely stand the thought of giving the tiny baby out of his hands.
So it’s him who brings Jin Ling to Jin Zixuan on a daily basis.
“If you could just heal up already,” Jiang Cheng grumbles sometimes during the third week, because he has a home to rebuild and a Sect to establish and disciples to train, but instead he’s sitting at his late sister’s husband’s bedside, holding a baby on his knees so Jin Zixuan can reach out and let Jin Ling grab his finger. “I have better things to do than be here every goddamn day.”
“Then just leave,” Jin Zixuan snaps back, clearly as unhappy with his bedrest as Jiang Cheng is.
Plus, neither of them counted on seeing each other every goddamn day when Jin Zixuan married Jiang Yanli and for all that Jiang Yanli clearly loved him, Jiang Cheng still holds a grudge.
Jin Zixuan was an ass to his sister and he’s not sure he’ll ever forgive that.
“Fine,” Jiang Cheng presses out and makes to stand up, absolutely intending to take Jin Ling with him, but Jin Zixuan fists his hand in Jiang Cheng’s robe.
“You’ll leave him here,” he says, eyes narrowed and Jiang Cheng fights the urge to bare his teeth at him.
“Absolutely not. You’re not even allowed to hold him yet,” he gives back and he can see the fury flash over Jin Zixuan’s face.
“And whose fault is that?” he demands to know and if he’s being honest, Jiang Cheng has been itching for this fight ever since Jin Zixuan landed in Lotus Pier.
“Why don’t you tell me,” he says, voice scathing and Jin Zixuan doesn’t even hesitate for a second.
“Your fucking brother did this to me,” he hisses and now Jiang Cheng gives him a smile so sharp Jin Zixuan rears back.
“From what you told me it was your brother who did this, so if I were you, I wouldn’t go around throwing stones,” he gives back without missing a beat and Jin Zixuan goes red in the face. “Now if you would excuse me, I have to take care of your kid, because clearly you’re unable to.”
It’s a low blow, and Jiang Cheng knows it, but he can’t stop himself.
“I wasn’t supposed to do this alone,” Jin Zixuan says, and his voice sounds more watery than Jiang Cheng knows how to deal with. “Yanli was supposed to be here, too.”
“Yeah, well, she’s not, is she,” Jiang Cheng says, and even just the reminder that his sister is dead cuts him open all over again.
A very vindictive part of Jiang Cheng hopes that Jin Zixuan feels the same pain Jiang Cheng does.
“And whose fault is that?” Jin Zixuan yells suddenly at him, startling Jin Ling into crying, but neither of them care right now.
“Certainly not mine,” Jiang Cheng shoots back but Jin Zixuan doesn’t back down.
“No. It was just your brother who killed my wife. Who killed his mother,” Jin Zixuan says with a pointed look at Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng boils with rage.
“She was my sister, too,” he shouts, Jin Ling full on wailing in his arms now, and it’s only the arrival of Jiang Sushan who defuses the situation.
“What the hell,” she says and marches up to Jiang Cheng, to take Jin Ling out of his hands. “I allowed you to bring him because I thought it would help his recovery,” she snaps and rocks Jin Ling in her arms.
“Since clearly you’re both too stupid to appreciate my gift, I’ll have to ask you to leave now, Sect Leader Jiang.”
Jiang Cheng turns burning eyes on her, but Jiang Sushan is not one to back down and Jiang Cheng knows it.
“Can I—,” Jin Zixuan asks, arm outstretched for his son but Jiang Sushan gives him the same judgemental look she gave Jiang Cheng.
“Absolutely not,” she declares and then simply storms off, Jin Ling still in her arms.
Jiang Cheng’s fingers itch without Jin Ling’s by now so familiar weight and Jin Zixuan looks like he has half a mind running after her.
But thanks to the interruption all the rage left Jiang Cheng and so he scrubs a tired hand over his face.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you. If you leave that bed, she’ll find a reason to send Jin Ling to Meishan or something,” Jiang Cheng whispers without looking at Jin Zixuan who freezes in his movement.
“She wouldn’t,” he gives back but he doesn’t sound as certain as he surely would like to be.
“She would,” Jiang Cheng corrects him and then straightens up. “Just stay in this goddamn bed and heal, would you? I’m tired of doing this alone,” he tells Jin Zixuan, his eyes still carefully avoided, but he still notices the jerky nod from the other man.
It’s only then that Jiang Cheng leaves the infirmary.
~*~*~
It takes Jin Zixuan another two weeks to heal enough for Jiang Sushan to allow him out of bed. He’s still not allowed to hold Jin Ling without help, but at least he can watch him. It doesn’t give Jiang Cheng enough time to deal with his Sect’s business, but it’s better than nothing.
“I can help, you know,” Jin Zixuan says one afternoon as he watches Jin Ling and he startles Jiang Cheng enough that he messes up his letter.
“Fuck,” Jiang Cheng curses, prompting Jin Ling to let out an unhappy noise and when Jin Zixuan shoots him an accusing glare, Jiang Cheng glares right back.
“He’s too young to pick up on this,” Jiang Cheng says as he checks if there’s a way to save the letter.
There is not. He’ll have to start over.
“One day he won’t be,” Jin Zixuan reasons and he reaches out as if he wants to pick Jin Ling up.
“Oh no, you don’t,” Jiang Cheng hisses under his breath and intercepts his movement, taking Jin Ling into his own arms.
“Jiang Wanyin!” Jin Zixuan snaps and Jiang Cheng glares at him over the top of Jin Ling’s very soft baby hair.
“If you pick him up, you’ll rip something and then we’re back at square one, so don’t even think about it.”
“He is my son,” Jin Zixuan presses out and Jiang Cheng shrugs.
“Then maybe hurry up with the healing, so you can hold him, too. It certainly would be a great help,” Jiang Cheng snarks and then clicks his tongue when his eyes fall on the ruined letter.
“I can help,” Jin Zixuan says again, following Jiang Cheng’s gaze and Jiang Cheng bristles.
“I am perfectly capable of writing my own letters, thank you very much.”
“You’re so—,” Jin Zixuan says and then clearly can’t find the right words because he closes his mouth with a click. “Fine. Put him back down again, so you can finish your damn letter.”
“Ah, language,” Jiang Cheng reminds him, rather smug, and he almost has to smile when Jin Zixuan shoots him a glare.
Almost.
~*~*~
When Jin Ling starts running around, Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan have long fallen into a routine. Jin Zixuan was right when he said he could help—he was trained as an heir, too, after all—and Jiang Cheng is loathe to admit that it removes a great weight from his shoulders to pass the less important matters off to Jin Zixuan.
They don’t talk a lot, even after all this time, since too many topics are off limits. They don’t talk about Wei Wuxian or Jin Guangyao at all, and mentions of Jiang Yanli still make both of them bitter and snappish, even though they are getting better at it.
It’s still safest to talk about Jin Ling, so they mostly spend their time doing that.
Even though Jiang Cheng finds himself wishing they could talk about Jiang Yanli more often.
Jin Zixuan is one of the last living people who held his sister dear, and Jiang Cheng itches with the need to find out what details Jin Zixuan remembers about her.
Jiang Cheng is afraid he’s forgetting too much lately, everything getting buried under work and more work.
“My sister told me I would hate this,” Jiang Cheng says apropos of nothing one day, when Jin Zixuan’s gaze follows Jin Ling down the pier.
They have secured this particular pier—erected a barrier so that Jin Ling couldn’t fall into the water even if they looked away for a second—and so Jin Zixuan doesn’t hesitate to snap his head around to him.
“What?” he asks, voice breathless and Jiang Cheng already regrets opening his mouth.
But the thought that maybe his memory of Jiang Yanli would be matched with one from Jin Zixuan gets him to talk again.
“She always said I’m a doer,” Jiang Cheng says, and keeps his eyes on the pile of letters on the table. “That I was meant to train the disciples and lead them on night-hunts. That I wasn’t made for the bureaucracy of leading a Sect.”
“She was right,” Jin Zixuan says with a scoff, though it’s not as sharp as it could be. “You’re doing a piss-poor job at this.”
“Language,” Jiang Cheng mildly reminds Jin Zixuan and he has to press his lips together when the predictable offended huff comes.
It was quite the surprise to realize that Jin Zixuan cursed almost as much as Jiang Cheng did, and by now Jin Ling starts to babble. One of them will slip up sooner or later, and Jiang Cheng is determined to have it be Jin Zixuan.
He thinks it would greatly amuse him, to see Jin Zixuan flush in outrage and embarrassment.
“You think you could do it better?” Jiang Cheng challenges him and Jin Zixuan sighs.
“I don’t—I don’t know,” he finally admits and Jiang Cheng’s gaze snaps towards him.
He didn’t expect Jin Zixuan to admit that he doesn’t know, that he isn’t sure of his capabilities.
“My father—he never let me do much. Shoved the minor matters off to me, but that was before Jin Guangyao came to Koi Tower. Afterwards, not so much. I guess between the two of us, you’re the only one with real experience.”
“Oh,” Jiang Cheng says, because sometimes he forgets that it wasn’t only his family that was fucked up.
“Oh,” Jin Ling parrots after Jiang Cheng and it’s enough warning for Jin Zixuan to brace for the impact of the toddler.
“You just make sure to repeat the harmless stuff,” Jin Zixuan tells his son as he hoists him into his lap, where Jin Ling settles quite contently.
An ugly spike of jealousy goes through Jiang Cheng, but he shoves it aside. Jin Ling is Jin Zixuan’s son. He’s just the uncle. Of course Jin Ling would be more comfortable with Jin Zixuan.
But then Jin Ling makes grabby hands at Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan shuffles closer with a roll of his eyes.
“I do not understand the fascination with your bell,” Jin Zixuan grumbles under his breath but he watches fondly as Jin Ling excitedly grabs for it.
“I do not understand the fascination with you,” Jiang Cheng shoots back, his eyes already back on his letter, but he still hears the outraged noise Jin Zixuan makes.
Instead of retaliating, like Jiang Cheng expected, Jin Zixuan falls silent and it’s a long time before he speaks again.
“Yanli always said that we needed to find a capable and trustworthy right hand for Jin Ling,” he finally whispers and Jiang Cheng stiffens. “I think she was preparing for the possibility that Jin Ling would turn out like you, too,” Jin Zixuan goes on, and normally Jiang Cheng would be offended at his choice of words, but Jin Zixuan’s voice is soft and Jiang Yanli never thought anything wrong with Jiang Cheng.
“I see,” Jiang Cheng whispers and then busies himself with the letter again.
He doesn’t move away when Jin Zixuan’s knee brushes his.
~*~*~
Jiang Cheng is contemplating drowning himself in the waters of Lotus Pier when Jin Ling runs up to him.
“Baba!” he yells excitedly and Jiang Cheng’s heart stumbles with that by now so familiar and dreaded mix of emotions.
They have tried to tell Jin Ling that he should address Jiang Cheng as ‘jiujiu’ and not ‘baba’ but it never seems to stick with Jin Ling and at least Jin Zixuan seems to have given up on it.
Jiang Cheng refuses to acknowledge how that makes him feel, but sometimes, it’s all he can do, drowning in how much he might want this.
It’s not right, and Jiang Cheng knows it.
“A-Ling,” he greets Jin Ling when he crashes into his legs and peers up at him, excitement shining out of his eyes. “What is it?”
“A-die said I could start training with the sword soon!” Jin Ling’s voice is still too loud, too excited, but Jiang Cheng smiles down at him.
“Oh, did he?” he asks, even though he already knows it.
For all that Jin Zixuan is Jin Ling’s father, they have fallen into the habit of making decisions together. It’s a dangerous territory, like Jiang Cheng’s heart likes to remind him.
“Yes, yes, yes,” Jin Ling babbles, and Jiang Cheng knows Jin Ling is getting too big for this now, but he still bows down to pick him up and settle him at his hip.
“But I’m not allowed to use Suihua yet,” Jin Ling then adds with a sad little tilt of his mouth and rests his head on Jiang Cheng’s shoulder. “A-die says I’m still too small for that.”
“And he’s right,” Jiang Cheng says and flicks Jin Ling’s nose. “Plus Suihua is too sharp for practice. You don’t want to cut yourself, do you?”
“No, baba,” Jin Ling agrees immediately, because for all that he tries to play tough—even at his tender age of five—Jin Ling cries easily.
Not to mention that neither Jin Zixuan nor Jiang Cheng like to see him hurt.
Jiang Cheng turns away from the water, thoughts of drowning himself and his stupid feelings forgotten, and when his eyes fall on Jin Zixuan he turns his head slightly away from Jin Ling on instinct.
It’s also a good reason not to focus on how his heart skips a beat.
“A-die!” Jin Ling predictably yells and throws himself out of Jiang Cheng’s arms, straight into Jin Zixuan’s, secure in the knowledge that neither will let him fall.
Jiang Cheng maintains his grip on Jin Ling until he’s sure that Jin Zixuan has him, but he sharply turns his head away when Jin Zixuan’s hands linger on his own longer than is strictly necessary.
Jiang Cheng’s mouth gives an unhappy twist when he reminds himself yet again that Jin Zixuan is his dead sister’s husband, but it does nothing to calm these feelings inside of him.
“Did you tell your baba already?” Jin Zixuan asks Jin Ling, but his eyes don’t leave Jiang Cheng and Jiang Cheng has to turn around when the look becomes too much.
“I did,” Jin Ling nods. “He says Suihua is too sharp for me, so I won’t use it yet,” he then tacks on and Jin Zixuan chuckles.
“Didn’t I tell you the same? Why do you only listen when it’s your baba saying that?” Jin Zixuan wants to know and Jiang Cheng can’t take it anymore.
“Zixuan!” he snaps and he only remembers himself when Jin Ling stares at him with watery eyes.
“A-Ling, why don’t you go to your room, I found you a training sword,” Jin Zixuan says as he puts Jin Ling down and Jin Ling runs off just as excitedly as he ran up to Jiang Cheng, Jiang Cheng’s outburst clearly already forgotten.
Jiang Cheng stares after him, not out of worry because he knows Jin Ling is safe in Lotus Pier, but to avoid Jin Zixuan’s look.
He can feel his eyes on him and Jiang Cheng doesn’t know if he’s strong enough to take it.
“Why are you still objecting to being called baba?” Jin Zixuan wants to know as he steps up to Jiang Cheng and Jiang Cheng tenses.
“I’m his jiujiu,” he gives back, even though there’s a sharp pain in his chest at the possibility of being addressed as such from Jin Ling.
“No, you’re not,” Jin Zixuan softly says and then turns Jiang Cheng around with a firm hand to his shoulder.
Jiang Cheng can’t meet his eyes, but when his gaze falls to Jin Zixuan’s lips instead he jerks his head away from that sight too.
He’s still trying to forget that night, the one where they both got drunk, the night where Jiang Cheng allowed Jin Zixuan to lean in and kiss him, and it’s so much harder than it should be. But Jin Zixuan isn’t his to touch or to kiss and Jiang Cheng hates himself a little bit for the fact that he wasn’t strong enough to push him away.
That he kissed him back instead.
“Wanyin,” Jin Zixuan whispers, and Jiang Cheng jerks with the familiarity in that name.
“Don’t,” he presses out and tries to take a step away from Jin Zixuan, but he follows him.
“Tell me why,” Jin Zixuan says, matching Jiang Cheng step for step, relentless in his movements, until Jiang Cheng is pressed against the railing of the pier.
“You’re my sister’s husband,” Jiang Cheng bites out, the words so ingrained in him already, because he has to remind himself of that several times a day.
“I’m a widower,” Jin Zixuan says, and he sounds exactly as pained by that as he should, before he shakes his head. “And the mourning period is over.”
“That doesn’t change anything,” Jiang Cheng gives back and startles when Jin Zixuan puts his hand on his arm.
Not really holding onto him, but seeking contact nonetheless and Jiang Cheng is helpless against it. He sways into the contact, a move Jin Zixuan clearly notices because a small smile grazes his lips.
Jiang Cheng itches to kiss it off.
“Doesn’t it?” Jin Zixuan asks and Jiang Cheng raises his head as he pushes his shoulders back.
“No,” he bites out but Jin Zixuan doesn’t let go of him.
“Do you really think Yanli would begrudge us this? Do you really think she wouldn’t want us to be happy?” he asks and Jiang Cheng jerks with his words.
“Who says you make me happy?” he shoots back and his stomach falls when pain flashes over Jin Zixuan’s face.
He hesitates for a moment, but when Jiang Cheng doesn’t move or say anything else, he slowly pulls back.
And Jiang Cheng, he can’t let that happen.
His hands shoot up on instinct, fisting in Jin Zixuan’s robes, which are more purple than gold at this point, and he stops Jin Zixuan in his movement.
Jiang Cheng can’t quite meet Jin Zixuan’s eyes, but he has wondered the same lately. If Jiang Yanli would really be mad at them for finding happiness again. For finding happiness with each other.
Jiang Cheng can’t be sure, but he likes to think that she would want this for them. That she would be happy. And if Jin Zixuan thinks the same—
Before Jiang Cheng can overthink this, he leans forward, pressing his lips to Jin Zixuan’s, who meets him without hesitation.
Jiang Cheng was drunk the last—only—time they did this, but he isn’t now. Now, he gets to enjoy this.
“You make me very happy, Wanyin,” Jin Zixuan mumbles against his lips when they finally part, and Jiang Cheng wonders when Jin Zixuan turned into the more brave, into the more suave of the two of them, but then he tilts his head again and all thoughts flee his head.
Jin Zixuan makes him very happy, too.
~*~*~
Jiang Cheng hasn’t even entered their rooms completely yet when Jin Zixuan slams a letter down on the table.
“My father died,” Jin Zixuan announces and the good mood leaves Jiang Cheng just as quickly as his stomach drops to the floor.
They didn’t even get two years, is all Jiang Cheng can think, as he sinks to the floor opposite of Jin Zixuan.
“I see,” Jiang Cheng whispers, and pushes the letter away from him.
He can guess what it says. Jin Zixuan is the heir after all.
He will leave, and he will take Jin Ling with him, and he might as well reach into Jiang Cheng’s chest and take his heart, too. It’s not like there will be much left of it, after all.
“You don’t,” Jin Zixuan says with a little shake of his head, and then leans over the table to drag Jiang Cheng into a biting kiss.
Jiang Cheng imagines this is what goodbye tastes like and he has to blink furiously so that the tears won’t cloud his gaze.
“I’m not going back,” Jin Zixuan says when they finally part and Jiang Cheng’s breath hitches at that, his hands coming up to frame Jin Zixuan’s face.
“Do not lie to me, only to leave in the end,” he demands, but Jin Zixuan shakes his head and then presses a kiss to Jiang Cheng’s palm for good measure too.
“I’m not,” he reassures him. “Did you forget that my mother likes you? Maybe even more than I do,” Jin Zixuan teases him, and it’s familiar enough to bring a small smile to Jiang Cheng’s face. “She’s going to be acting Sect Leader,” Jin Zixuan tells him as he leans close again to brush his nose against Jiang Cheng’s cheek. “And she wants us to marry.”
Jiang Cheng freezes in surprise at those words.
“She what?” he dumbly asks, because this is something Jiang Cheng never allowed himself to think of, to hope for.
Jin Zixuan wore red once already, and surely Jiang Cheng couldn’t get so lucky as to see him in it again.
“The date is set,” Jin Zixuan says with a shrug. “She doesn’t give us much choice. Really, it was more a statement of facts than her voicing a wish. You know she adores you, I wonder how you can still have doubts about that.”
“Zixuan,” Jiang Cheng says, because he doesn’t appreciate it if Jin Zixuan is just joking around right now.
“If you would have read the letter you knew,” Jin Zixuan says, his amusement clear in his voice and Jiang Cheng can’t help himself, he simply has to lean in and capture Jin Zixuan’s lips again.
His fiance’s lips, if Jin Zixuan is speaking the truth.
“Jin Ling is going to love this,” Jiang Cheng says when they part and Jin Zixuan makes an unhappy face at him.
“I would prefer it if you loved it,” he pouts and Jiang Cheng gives him a brilliant smile.
“Isn’t it enough that I love you?” he asks and when Jin Zixuan splutters like he always does when Jiang Cheng so freely expresses his affection, Jiang Cheng knows that they will be alright.
More than that even.
~*~*~
Wei Wuxian has to admit that he kind of enjoys showing the little brat just what his talismans can do. It’s fun to see him on the floor and struggling to get free.
“You just wait until my a-die and baba show up,” the brat says, once he exhausted himself and Wei Wuxian frowns at that.
“Your a-die and baba?” he parrots but before the brat can answer him, there’s a rustling in the underbrush next to them and Wei Wuxian takes a cautious step back.
“Jin Ling,” a new voice says and Wei Wuxian watches as the sour face on the brat’s face is overtaken with a smile.
Wait a minute, Jin Ling? Jin Rulan? Could it really be, Wei Wuxian wonders, but then Jin Zixuan is already stepping forwards and it’s really him.
Even though Wei Wuxian has to do a double take when he sees him dressed in all purple.
“Jin Zixuan?” Wei Wuxian blurts out, and then—because he can’t help himself—he adds, “Didn’t Wen Ning kill you?”
As soon as the words leave his mouth he slaps a hand over his mouth, but it’s already too late and the damage is done, Wei Wuxian can see that in the narrowing of Jin Zixuan’s eyes.
“Wei Wuxian?” he asks, suspicion clear in his voice and Wei Wuxian winces.
To think that he would blow his cover this soon.
“Haha, in the flesh,” he says with a sheepish smile, rubbing the back of his head, and he totally doesn’t squirm under Jin Zixuan’s searching gaze.
“Not quite in the flesh, huh,” Jin Zixuan mumbles and then destroys the talisman on Jin Ling’s back. “You know, I didn’t appreciate it when your Ghost General put a hole through my stomach,” Jin Zixuan then says conversationally and before Wei Wuxian can say anything to that, purple lightning fills the forest.
Wei Wuxian shivers, phantom pains already running down his back, and he takes a step back.
“You know, I didn’t appreciate it either when your Ghost General put a hole through my husband’s stomach,” a new voice says and when Jiang Cheng steps up next to Jin Zixuan Wei Wuxian’s mind goes blank.
He blinks in confusion several times, but the picture still doesn’t make any more sense than before.
“I think you broke him,” Jin Zixuan whispers to Jiang Cheng who gives Jin Zixuan a sweet smile—and that is something Wei Wuxian can’t even begin to process—and then he holds his hand out for Jin Ling.
“A-Ling, come here,” Jiang Cheng says and Jin Ling is up and next to Jiang Cheng in an instant.
“A-die and baba?” Wei Wuxian whispers, his mind still reeling with the new revelations, and he’s almost relieved when someone else interrupts the scene.
“Zixuan, are you angering my A-Cheng again?” a woman’s voice suddenly calls out and Wei Wuxian can do nothing but stare in helpless confusion as Jin Zixuan groans while Jin Ling snickers.
“A-niang, seriously, you could think Wanyin is your son,” Jin Zixuan complaints just as Madam Jin comes to a halt next to them.
“Thankfully he is now,” Madam Jin gives back with a smile as she pats Jiang Cheng’s cheek, and Wei Wuxian has to watch as his brother just lets it happen.
Without blushing even, which means this must be a regular occurrence.
“It’s not him who made me angry,” Jiang Cheng reassures her and Madam Jin’s eyes fall on Wei Wuxian.
“Oh?” she says and Wei Wuxian falls into a sloppy bow.
“Madam Jin,” he greets her only to startle when Zidian crackles again.
“That’s Sect Leader Jin to you,” Jiang Cheng snaps, just as Jin Ling chuckles.
“What. The fuck,” Wei Wuxian whispers and when three voices snap “Language” at him, he wonders just what the hell he stumbled into this time.

Thanks everyone for the prompts! I decided to try and knock these all out in one go:
@thegirlwhotrashcans: remember, you asked for it. au, nobody dies, wwx and yanli bodyswap. they're married to lwj and jzx. 100% crack. bonus points if jin zixuan completely loses his shit and lwj looks very calm but loses his sh*t after everything is back to normal
@alightbuthappypen: Competency kink! One or both of them (when I say 'them' I mean wangxian obvs, I know what I'm about) getting hot and bothered about the other being amazing. On a nighthunt maybe? Or anywhere else that strikes your fancy!
@hearteyeswangji: WRITE MORE P*RN
I think I can manage that. With a few tweaks, accidental seriousness, and broad, ridiculous fix-its tacked on. I have no idea how long this might be. Let’s try it in installments? I’ll reblog and add on as I go. Maybe it’ll be fun. We’ll find out.
Disclaimer that this is just gonna go for it with no revising and no beta readers, so pls do not hold me to any conceivable standard of coherency thx
--
WILL INCLUDE: wangxian, xuanli, let jyl and lwj be friends agenda, canon divergence, fix-it, everybody lives, arranged marriage, bodyswap, light angst, getting together, Attempts at Comedy, eventual (light?) wangxian smut
The Sunshot Campaign has just been won. Everyone goes over to Jin Guangshan’s house after the Nightless City banquet, to Negotiate Stuff, and some hasty political marriages happen resulting in Xuanli Wedded Bliss and Wangxian Un-confessed Wedded Tension. Then, suddenly...a curse befalls our brave heroes.
--
Wei Wuxian wakes suddenly, feeling odd. He’s sleeping on his stomach for one thing, which is not his usual, but he feels warm and comfortable enough that he doesn’t think it strange. But then there is the scent of peonies and gardenias, which is both familiar and alien, somehow. It makes him open his eyes.
Which is when he sees the hand before him on the bolster. It is slender and elegant. Small. Pale. Familiar? Wearing a jade bangle. He pushes himself up a bit, startled, only to see the hand move when he does.
The hand. Is his hand. He stares at it. The shock of it, coupled with the early hour, leave his mind working very slowly.
At length, he becomes aware of an odd weight across his back, which then shifts. Wei Wuxian turns.
He is met with the sleepy, moon-eyed stare of one Jin Zixuan, still cradling him in his arms.
“What the fuck,” says Wei Wuxian. His voice is. Soft. And high.
He would think this was all some messed-up dream if not for the fact that his dreams of late have all been messed up in an entirely different way. He’s also certain, in an odd, detached way, that he never would have imagined the battle scars that mar Jin Zixuan’s distressingly visible skin.
Jin Zixuan’s brow furrows, and he blinks. “A-Li?”
“...What the fuck.”
~~~
When Lan Wangji wakes at his customary hour, he is just slightly more tired than usual. The coverlet over him is oddly heavy, but he does not give it any thought until light from the rising sun slips over an unfamiliar sill and into his eyes. His entire body goes tense as he remembers.
Jinlintai. The long hours of debate, of negotiation. The hasty marriages.
He sits up in his strange bed and turns. There, in the bed opposite, is Wei Ying’s sleeping form. Close, yet still distant. Safe, at least.
Lan Wangji relaxes, and takes a breath. It was a near thing, keeping the sects from demanding more and more from Wei Ying, from treating him like a criminal instead of the hero he is. But somehow, Jiang Wanyin and Xiongzhang ended up on the same page, defending him, working tirelessly toward a compromise with the more critical parties. And now Lan Wangji has the dubious honor of ‘keeping Wei Ying in check,’ as Yao-zongzhu so inelegantly put it, through marriage.
A strictly political marriage. A convenient solution. To bind them together, to keep Wei Ying tied under the umbrella of Lan Wangji’s rigid honor.
It is unclear, as of yet, if Wei Ying resents this arrangement. He has not been himself since Nightless City, and the destruction of Wen Ruohan’s forces. First his long coma, then a lingering tiredness that he has not seemed able to shake, which dampens his normally-vivid expressions of feeling.
Lan Wangji is worried. But this, at least, Wei Ying has made clear is unwelcome. He seems to want to pretend that nothing has changed. Not about himself, and not between the two of them. Lan Wangji has done his best to honor his wishes, despite everything.
Now, he rises and dresses before sinking into his morning meditation. It is still strange to do so fully dressed, weighed down by the propriety required for the public, but it has felt necessary, now that Wei Ying shares chambers with him. A physical manifestation of the barrier between them, more important than ever now that they are, bizarrely, married.
Before his meditation is finished, he hears Wei Ying stir. It is unusual for him to wake so early. Lan Wangji’s eyes snap open, immediately searching him for signs of pain.
Wei Wuxian turns over, then goes very still. He sits bolt upright, searching the bed with wild eyes, then turns them on the room at large. When they land on Lan Wangji, he curls in on himself, the fingers of one hand tightening at the collars of his sleeping robe, clutching it closed.
“La—Lan-er-gongzi?”
His voice is oddly breathy, and his eyes...they are wide with confusion, with just the slightest tinge of fear. Lan Wangji is struck nearly senseless by the term of address, aberrant in Wei Ying’s mouth.
“What is wrong?”
Searching the room again, Wei Wuxian moves toward the edge of the bed with a strangely graceful modesty. It looks alien on his long limbs. “My...my husband. Where…?”
The word jolts through Lan Wangji’s entire body. He has never heard Wei Ying say it before. He has...wanted to hear it. Dearly, he realizes suddenly. But it sounds wrong. Distressed. Everything Wei Ying says sounds wrong.
“Wei Ying,” he says.
Wei Ying’s eyes snap to his. “A-Xian? Where is he? Is he with A-Xuan? Are they alright?”
Lan Wangji blinks at him, uncomprehending, for several seconds. Then he begins to understand.
“You are not—”
The doors to their chambers burst open, and Jiang Yanli rushes in. The tasteful purple and gold robes she has adopted in the few days since the weddings are loose, uncharacteristically askew—not impreprietous, but verging on it. She spots Lan Wangji and her stormy expression clears.
“Lan Zhan,” she says, and her shoulders droop.
Lan Wangji blinks at her, thrown by her use of this name, then glances at Wei Ying, who has gone completely still, his mouth open in a small, shocked ‘o.’ Jiang Yanli follows his gaze and freezes.
Just then, Jin Zixuan comes barreling into the room, significantly more unkempt than his wife. He has not even tied back his hair.
“A-Li,” he implores, “what’s happened? We can’t just go barging into our guests’,” he pauses, and bows awkwardly, hastily, to Lan Wangji and Wei Ying in turn, “rooms like this. Please,” he takes her arm, but she shakes him off.
She’s still staring at Wei Ying. “Sh...Shijie?”
Wei Ying startles, and looks down at himself. He holds out his arms, his hands, and looks at those too. Then he looks up at Jiang Yanli. “A-Xian?”
“Shijie,” Jiang Yanli says, and slumps over to the bed, embracing Wei Ying.
“A-Li,” hisses Jin Zixuan, scandalized.
Lan Wangji glances at Jin Zixuan’s wife embracing his own husband on the bed, and rises. He walks briskly past them all to shut the door. Then he returns.
“Wei Ying,” he says again. Jiang Yanli looks up at him.
It is obvious, now that he has realized it. Her face, animated by his personality. The soft warmth of her eyes sharpened just so. The deliberately graceless way she threw herself—himself—into Wei Ying’s—no, Jiang Yanli’s—arms.
Lan Wangji takes a deep breath. “Is this a curse?”
“Yes,” Wei Ying says with Jiang Yanli’s face, but his own certainty.
“How can we break it?” Lan Wangji asks.
“I”m not sure, not yet. I need to try a few things—or—having the original curse would be safer.” He looks at his sister in his own body. “I...don’t really want to experiment with this.”
Jiang Yanli tsks and bumps his shoulder a little too forcefully, jostling Wei Ying in her currently slight form. “Vain,” she says, teasing.
“Shijieee,” he whines. It sounds bizarre in Jiang Yanli’s voice. “I don’t want to accidentally hurt you.”
“I know,” Jiang Yanli says, soothing.
“Do you feel alright?” Wei Ying goes on, urgent.
“Perfectly alright, now that you’re both here,” she says, smiling at the newcomers in turn.
Something sharply acidic surges in Lan Wangji’s stomach at such a look on Wei Ying’s face, directed at...Jin Zixuan.
“Really, though,” Wei Ying presses, “any nausea? Dizziness? Pain? You’re not worried?”
“Not at all. Our A-Xian will figure it out.”
Lan Wangji watches as the appearance of Wei Ying’s knuckle affectionately brushes Jiang Yanli’s nose.
Strange. It is all...so strange.
“If—”
“What is happening?” Jin Zixuan interrupts.
All three of them look at him. He stares between them, wild-eyed and desperately askew. Lan Wangji has never considered him to be particularly slow on the uptake, but he supposes allowances must be made for the stress of waking up with a stranger in one’s bed.
He does not care to investigate the perverse pang of jealousy he feels at the thought.
“A-Xuan, it’s me,” Jiang Yanli says. Jin Zixuan stares at her in Wei Ying’s body, uncomprehending. She goes on slowly, but not unkindly. “A-Xian and I have been cursed into each other’s bodies. He’s in there, and I’m in here.
Her husband blinks several times, very quickly. Lan Wangji recognizes the moment it sinks in by the deep flush that rises across his entire face, and is certain he does not wish to know what precisely inspired it.
Jin Zixuan takes an involuntary half-step back, then forward again, as he speaks with renewed urgency. “Why has this happened? Can it be undone?”
“Great questions,” Wei Ying says, falsely encouraging. Lan Wangji exchanges a glance with him, and it almost feels natural, to share such a thing with either Wei Ying or Jiang Yanli. “Someone was clearly either targeting me—that’s Wei Wuxian, that’s me, in here—or you...whom you know to be Jin Zixuan. I hope.”
Jin Zixuan turns a deeper shade of red. “Obviously,” he bites out. “But why?”
Wei Ying rolls his eyes dramatically. It is not something Lan Wangji ever imagined Jiang Yanli doing.
“We don’t know yet, but we will once we find and question the person responsible,” Wei Ying says. Jiang Yanli grips his arm suddenly. Wei Ying looks at her. “And yes, it can be undone. Of course it can. I’ll figure it out.”
“Cast a rebound,” Lan Wangji says, brisk. The more quickly they are done with this, the better.
Wei Ying’s face falls. “Ah,” he says, “well, we…”
“My cultivation is too weak for him to reliably use,” Jiang Yanli says suddenly. “And I’m not very good at the method, I’m afraid.”
Lan Wangji nods. Steps forward. Then hesitates. “If the curse was cast in such a way, one of you may end up in the caster’s body. And they in yours.”
They all look at Jiang Yanli. Her expression grows grim. “Alright,” she says, then looks to Lan Wangji. There is something steely in her expression that is familiar on Wei Ying’s face. “Thank you for the warning. Go ahead.”
Lan Wangji hesitates only a moment longer, expecting protests from the other two. But Wei Ying is wearing a small, knowing smile, and Jin Zixuan merely nods at her, reassuring. Lan Wangji senses his esteem for the Jin heir rising at such solid trust in his wife.
He steps forward and casts the rebound. They all hold their breath.
Wei Ying glances around, his wry expression entirely foreign on Jiang Yanli’s face. “Anything?”
“No,” says Jiang Yanli.
Wei Ying sighs. “More work for us, then.”
“A-Xian,” Jiang Yanli says, taking gentle hold of his wrist. “You know what this means.”
“Ah?”
“You’ll have to be me.”
“Ah. No, I—”
“A-Xian.”
Wei Ying scratches his head, a not-at-all ladylike gesture. “Or we could just stay in here and let these two investigate?”
The smile Jiang Yanli turns on him is tender, and knowing, and indulgent. “I’d like to see you try to sit still when there’s a puzzle to solve.”
He sighs. “Alright. But you have to be me, too.”
She nods, and theatrically slouches into a sprawling, sloppy posture. Wei Ying laughs, his head thrown back, a hand on his stomach. Jin Zixuan turns around, looking almost ill.
Lan Wangji understands, and he doesn’t. It is dizzying, and distinctly wrong-looking, to see both of them this way. Yet there is also something endearing about it. About the parts of them that do overlap, and fit into each other better than one would expect.
“A-Xuan,” Jiang Yanli calls softly, noticing her husband’s distress.
Lan Wangji gets the distinct impression that that tone in Wei Ying’s voice is not helping the situation.
“Jin-gongzi,” he says. “It would be best for all of us to go about our days as normal, and not to arouse suspicion. Wei Ying sleeps late, and will not be missed for the morning. Jin-shao-furen may claim mild illness until the afternoon. But you and I must behave as normal. There are still the other sects to host.”
“Yes,” Jin Zixuan says absently. He runs a hand over his face. “Yes. You’re right. A-Li—” he turns and looks at the pair of them on the bed, and pauses. He shakes his head as if to clear it. “I’ll go back and dress. Join me when—or—Wei—” he stops. “I will be attending my duties. Please let me know what else I can do.”
“Remember to act natural,” Jiang Yanli says. “When A-Xian joins you later, try to look less like a roasted tomato, hmm?”
Jin Zixuan’s mouth twists into a wry smile, and he nods at the floor, then flees the room. Jiang Yanli and Wei Ying turn their eyes to Lan Wangji.
“I shall also depart,” he says. He circles his arms to bow to Jiang Yanli, but Wei Ying stands and pulls him over toward the door. Lan Wangji lets him, and tries not to pull away from the improprietous touch from a married lady.
“Lan Zhan,” he says, hushed and urgent. “I’m not...you don’t think I’m hurting her, am I? Just by being in here? Can you sense any resentment?”
Lan Wangji feels something tighten in his chest. Wei Ying has not let Lan Wangji so much as examine his pulse since he roused from his coma, but the idea that he is so constantly steeped in resentment as to cause worry that his very soul may be harmful...is distressing. He takes hold of his slender wrist carefully. It is still Jiang Yanli’s body, and he will treat it with the respect it is owed.
“I cannot,” he says. The only energy in Jiang Yanli’s body is generated by her own small but steady golden core. “I sense nothing that may be harmful.”
Wei Ying lets out a relieved breath. “Alright. But, um. What about the other way? Is her...is my body harming her?”
Lan Wangji turns to go back and perform the same examination, but Wei Ying stops him. “No, that’s alright. I’ll. We’ll just get this over with, and we can. Between the two of us, we can fix whatever...whatever damage I do.”
Lan Wangji stares at him, but Wei Ying refuses to meet his eyes. At length, he nods. “We can.”
“Alright. Ah, thanks. You should go.”
Lan Wangji goes.
How Fanon JC could become slightly canon
Since most jc stans think JC is someone who is :
good with kids
cares and really misses his "brother", since he was "forced" into killing him or leading the siege or never helping him with any resources or caring for the Wens
has a hard exterior but beneath that is a heart of gold.
thinks of Wei Wuxian as his brother in all but blood
To name a few.
I think we'd need to rewrite his whole story even his childhood for him to have at least half of those features.
Madam Yu would have to not be in the picture, she is one of the people who would frequently insist that Jiang Fengmian doesn't care for him, that he is inferior to Wei Ying and encourages an extremely classist way of thinking to Jiang Cheng.
Perhaps she dies in a night hunt when Jiang Cheng is like one year old. So now we have a Jiang Cheng who doesn't have that view of Jiang Fengmian not caring for him.
But even if this Jiang Cheng is not influenced by his mother, he still has an inherently selfish and narrow minded way of thinking. It's what makes him resonate with her thinking so easily.
Because of his inherent nature I think he'd still find it hard to understand his father's teachings or that his father loves him. This leads to slight disconnect between them.
When Wei Wuxian is brought to L.P I think he'd be okay and wouldn't chase him off because of his dogs. I believe him seeing his father holding Wei Wuxian for the day would make him slightly resentful though. Something like ( Why is an outsider holding my father that tightly? Don't you know he's my father? Who is he to do that?)
So they grow up together and JC still feels jealous over WWX's inherent genius and lashes out at times. WWX would not take it standing and would tease him or just ignore him, he has no fear of being whipped or being told to kneel for hours.
And probably thinks of WWX as this clown who easily gets his way while he has to bust his ass to do anything.( cultivation, mastery of the arts etc)
I think canon would progress the same from the way things are, its just that JC would be less toxic and has a better opportunity for redemption in this Au than in canon.I don't think fanon Jc can become canon with how JC is.
Unless...
We have Shen Yuan transmigrate into his body at the tender age of one year old. He relives a whole ass childhood but I know that SY!JC will :
be someone who has a heart of gold with an indifferent exterior
shelter the wen remnants
actually think of Wei Wuxian as his brother.
not get his golden core taken cause he will be right there with brother Wei Wuxian looking for food - if it does get taken he will be okay with it, he'll be sad but will eventually get over it. There won't be any golden core transfer.
be a sect leader who embraces the sect motto and has a sect which isn't a scary place for non-cultivators
not take any shit that YZY will spout or do.
not be toxic to Wei Wuxian
be a person who is good with kids.
not be "forced" to kill Wei Wuxian, he'd defend him so fiercely that the other sects would back off
act like an older brother to jyl and wwx.
Looking at what I wrote, I think what am saying is fanon JC would only exist canonically if a crossover is had and Shen Yuan transmigrates into his body.
Ps: I have the urge to read a Shen Yuan transmigrates into JC's body fic now, if its out there please rec it in the notes or please write it and tell me.
Its a prompt! (And dont worry about it, absolutely love reading your writing XD) Okay so dimension travel, so we all agree in a world where WWX was raised in another sect (like Lan/Nie) That he would be absolutely adored by them and everyone, healthy relationships( even Jin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian wouldn't be on a bad term much because no WWX JYL interaction) so! Canon!WWX from post ssc timeline gets transmigrated/summoned to one of these worlds where hes raised by either Lan or Nie so 1/2
They're a bit confused seeing WWX in black clothes, and seeing his gaunt/tired appearance and him being so on guard around them (since he's usually open and loved) that they ask him why is it so? Does he not know Lan Xichen/Nie Mingjue back from whicher place he came from, and Wei Wuxian goes 'Ive met them/we're not close' they ask 'sorry if its a bit personal but who were you raised by?' and WWX replies the Jiangs and cue everyone horrified cuz Jiangs areopen in their heavy dislike of WWX2/2
'It's my fault.' Nie Huaisang thinks as he frantically collects all the materials needed, 'It is my fault, I need to fix this.'
His er-ge was gone. His brother, Da-ge's pride and joy, the shining star of the Nie Clan.
Gone. Just like that.
One minute they're on an easy nighthunt and the next, Wei Wuxian is pushing him away to take an attack straight to his chest.
He knows his brother is gone. His body may be alive, but just barely. He's drowning in his own blood and there's nothing Nie Huaisang can do. There's no cognition in his eyes, that bright silver gaze is dull and blank.
He has to do something.
The ritual may not work. It came with so many warnings that Nie Huaisang lost the patience to read them all the way through. If something goes wrong, it goes wrong.
"Huaisang! What are you doing?!" Da-ge's voice is loud but Nie Huaisang doesn't pay any attention to it. The room is sealed and it would take da-ge some time to break through it.
"Nie Huaisang!"
Good, Lan Xichen is here. He'll take care of da-ge if something goes wrong.
"Huaisang!" There's a loud crash but he doesn't pay any attention to it, "Stop! Don't do something stupid."
"I need to save him. It is my fault, I need to save him!"
"Huaisang!"
There's a bright red flash and it drowns out everything.
---
Miraculously, he survives.
His fledgling Golden Core has shattered and melted into nothing, but he has survived.
And he has done it.
"Does your stupidity known no bounds?" Da-ge demands as Lan Wangji kneels by er-ge's bed and feeds him potent spiritual energy.
Wei Wuxian is alive. His cognition is intact and his Golden Core is stable but he's soaked in Resentful Energy.
"You destroyed your Golden Core, Huaisang! There's no recovering from it!"
"Wouldn't you do the same?" He demands, turning around to look at his oldest brother. He ignores Lan Xichen's alarmed voice and focuses on Nie Mingjue, "Is his life worth less than my Golden Core?"
Da-ge locks his jaw but doesn't reply. Of course, Wei Wuxian's life is worth more than a Golden Core.
"Huaisang," Lan Xichen sighs, "a-Xian wouldn't have wanted this."
"Look at Wangji-xiong and tell me that again." He says bluntly. He is tired and drained but no one can convince him that reviving er-ge wasn't the right choice.
Xichen-ge doesn't reply because no one can look at the devastated expression on Lan Wangji's face and say it wasn't worth it.
Huaisang doesn't feel the absence of the core as keenly as someone else might. He had only developed it during the Sunshot Campaign, after all.
He isn't like er-ge or Wangji-xiong, with their powerful cores and potent spiritual energy. The loss would've been devastating to them but is only an afterthought to him.
---
They realize something is off when Wei Wuxian opens his eyes and looks at them with distant wariness instead of familiar affection. He looks around and is instantly on guard, "Where... Why am I here?"
He looks directly at Wangji-xiong, "Lan Zhan? What are you... Have you brought me here?" He demanded, his expression shifting to something hostile, "Are we in Gusu?"
"Wei-gongzi," Xichen-ge calls for his attention, "I know you're very confused but please don't be alarmed. We're in your home at the Unclean Realm, not in Gusu."
Er-ge narrows his eyes and Huaisang recognizes that expression, even though it has never been directed towards them. A look of cool calculation as er-ge tries to decipher their motives. "My home?" He asks.
Wangji-xiong knows er-ge almost as well as they do. He reaches forward, "Wei Ying, let us explain, please."
It appears that this Wei Wuxian is just as vulnerable to Wangji-xiong as his brother had been because he softens immediately. His body is still tense but he seems to be willing to listen.
"You died in this world, saving Huaisang's life." Da-ge begins gruffly. Huaisang winces at the bluntness but er-ge seems to appreciate it, his sharp gaze focusing on their elder brother, "Yes, this world," Da-ge confirms, "Our didi decided he wouldn't tolerate it and decided to use one of our forbidden rituals to revive you. He didn't read things clearly. The ritual dragged your soul from another world and placed you in his body."
Er-ge's expression is skeptical, "Our didi..."
Wangji-xiong sucks in a sharp breath, "Wei Ying," His brother's gaze moves to his 'best friend', "You are Wei Wuxian, 23 years old, the Head Disciple of QingheNie Sect, the adopted younger brother of Nie Mingjue and older brother to Nie Huaisang. You were adopted by the former Nie-zongzhu when you were six years old."
Er-ge stares at Wangji-xiong in stunned disbelief but there's no denial in his expression.
No wonder, Wangji-xiong never lies. That must be true in his world as well.
"a-Xian," Er-ge winces and looks at Xichen-ge, "You need to rest and recover. Your Golden Core is stab-"
Er-ge gasps and immediately sits up, placing his hand on his chest. He closes his eyes and almost violently summons his spiritual energy.
"Wei Ying!" Wangji-xiong calls out in alarm but his brother doesn't pay any attention, his focus entirely inward.
"I have my Golden Core back..." Er-ge breathes, astonished but his skin goes white and he loses consciousness.
They exchange stunned glances before scrambling forward to check on him.
---
No one can deny Wei Wuxian has changed. It takes a month for his body to recover but his heart is still unsteady. He puts on every appearance of being alright, but Huaisang has grown up with this man. He knows something is off.
It is only when er-ge decides he needs to start training again that things start to become clear. Er-ge has trained all of his life to fight with a Dao. His movements are powerful and aggressive, designed to overwhelm the enemy.
Er-ge's mind, however, is accustomed to the traditional Jian. He seems to expect his movements to be lighter, faster. More agile and less powerful.
The dissonance makes him clumsy and he loses his first fight against Lan Wangji in a long time.
"Wei Ying?" Wangji-xiong frowns, "Your movements."
Da-ge has his concerned scowl on and he grabs Baxia, stepping into the training field, "With me, Wuxian."
This fight is faster and more brutal. Huaisang almost wants to protest but he can see er-ge adjust and adapt quickly.
His eyes gain a razor-sharp focus and his battle instincts come to the fore. "Good," Xichen-ge observes, "He's accepting his body."
Indeed, he is. Against da-ge's overwhelming force, there's nothing er-ge can do but react instinctively. They engage in several bouts and keep at it for over a shichen.
By the end of it, er-ge is exhausted but faintly triumphant.
"Lan Zhan, again!"
"Wei Ying, you need rest." Wangji-xiong says with a shake of his head, "Don't strain yourself."
"Why were you fighting like you wanted to wield a Jian, didi?" Da-ge asks sternly, "You were hesitant and weak in some strikes."
Er-ge grimaces and Xichen-ge steps forward. It has been over a month and though er-ge has seen how much they all care for him, he remains wary.
"a-Xian," Xichen-ge begins gently, "You weren't a part of the Nie Clan in the past, were you?"
Da-ge's scowl deepens at the thought of er-ge belonging to anyone else but them. They had suspected something like this, of course. But they had hoped that er-ge would've still been a part of the Nie Sect if not the Clan.
Er-ge remains wary but sighs, "No."
"Not the Lans," Xichen-ge observes astutely, "Not the Jins either. Were you a rogue cultivator? Or from a smaller sect?"
Er-ge studies him before shaking his head, "I was the Head Disciple of the Jiangs."
"What?" Wangji-xiong asks, his voice uncharacteristically sharp, "Jiangs?"
Da-ge looks furious and Xichen-ge seems pained. No wonder, given how... problematic the Jiang situation is. That family is entirely unsuitable for someone as loving and giving as his er-ge!
Jiang Wanyin is a complex mix of pride and insecurity. He lags behind all sect heirs, though Huaisang is fairly certain their batch of cultivators is particularly skilled. Er-ge and Wangji-xiong are exceptional in every way and Jin Zixuan is barely a few steps behind.
In the face of such competition, skilled but ordinary cultivators can't help but be overshadowed.
Jiang Fengmian, according to da-ge, is a meek little imitation of his former self. The man that pursued er-ge's mother had been strong and wise. He had the skill, political acumen, and grace to be an admirable Sect Leader.
His marriage to Yu Ziyuan ruined him.
And Yu Ziyuan is a nightmare. The one time she met Wei Wuxian, she had left such an impression that da-ge had cut all ties with the Jiang Sect until its Madam apologized to the Nie Sect Head Disciple.
That hadn't gone down well and the relationship between them is still sour.
"Do you want to return to them?" He blurts out, unable to help himself. If Jiangs are this Wei Wuxian's family then maybe-
"No."
They still because that's a very firm no. It is a complete and utter rejection of the very thought of it.
"No."
---
Getting the whole story out of er-ge is like pulling teeth but between Wangji-xiong's pleas, Xichen-ge's gentle questions, da-ge impassioned demands, and his own begging, they manage.
This Wei Wuxian doesn't love them yet but he sees their love for him clearly. That softens his heart and they get to hear every painful, excruciating aspect of his past life.
Wangji-xiong looks furious, da-ge paces, Xichen-ge is pale, but all of that doesn't matter.
He recognizes the look on er-ge's face. He has never seen it on him before, but he recognizes it.
Er-ge expects them to reject him. To abandon him for his 'sins'.
"Well, I don't have a Golden Core. Can you teach me Demonic Cultivation?"
"Huaisang!" Is yelled from almost every direction but he only has eyes for his older brother.
He sees those tired silver eyes study him for a moment before they soften completely, turning into the color of liquid moonlight. "You brat," Er-ge murmurs affectionately, "The thought of you wielding that power is nothing short of terrifying."
"But er-ge! Can you leave me defenseless, just like that? Don't you feel sorry for me-"
"Huaisang!" Da-ge snaps, "Stop trying to manipulate your brother!"
"Really, a-Sang, it isn't right for you to-"
Er-ge laughs. It's familiar, loud, and openly joyous. Silver eyes sparkle as he looks at them, "Don't worry, da-ge, he's a hundred years too early to manipulate me."
Wangji-xiong huffs, "Wei Ying."
"Lan Zhan," Er-ge teases, "How is that you manage to reprimand me by only saying my name? Shall I try it too? Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan!"
"And they're flirting again." He murmurs under his breath, drawing an amused look from Xichen-ge.
"Perhaps we really need to start betrothal negotiations," Xichen-ge says and da-ge scoffs.
"Not going to happen unless you're willing to part with your brother. Mine is my heir. He's not marrying into the Lans."
"Da-ge, be reasonable-"
Huaisang tunes them out and waves his fan in front of his face, his mind whirling.
He doesn't care about er-ge's marriage negotiations. He has bigger fish to fry.
Really, those Jins and Jiangs are getting too bold.
Note
Hey plan can you link or write something about how when the jiang siblings saved wei wuxian from a situation, both their acts were impulsive and not thought out. While when the wen siblings gave themselves to the jins to save wei wuxian and the other remnants, it was a thought out decision. I also acknowledge it's partially the factor of what the situation was too but i never saw the jiang sibs helping wwx in the background when they met for jiang yanli to show her dress.
Also Jiang Yanli died and we never really got what she wanted to say at her last moments, but what do you think she feels about her impulsive decision to save wei wuxian? Esp when she left a month old child behind as an orphan?
Also how do you think Mxtx wanted us to interpret their relation? Some people argue they were siblings but then we have her not even trying to do anything to help her so called brother when he was bearing the weight of the survival of the wen remnants. I always found their relationship as jyl being the mother figure and babying wwx who gave her the space to show her love without any shouts from madam yu and held her in great respect. Her death did affect wwx very thoroughly but would she have felt the same if wwx had died?
I mean I think you pretty much covered it. Both jc and YanLi's acts to protect WWX happen in the moment, without any real consideration of consequences and when they're emotionally and mentally compromised. The Wen siblings turn themselves in after careful discussion fully cognizant of what it will entail. When the Jiang siblings have time to consider their actions WWX is not prioritized. In the moment jc tries to distract the Wen soldiers and gets caught. That rare heroic act on his part however is rendered essentially meaningless, both by his unwillingness to live with the consequences of it, and by everything else he does afterwards. jc also only acts like that when he doesn't have the things he values so greatly, like privilege and power. Once he has his position again and YunmengJiang is reestablished jc doesn't want to risk even public opinion to stand by WWX. It's not really comparable to Wen Ning (and Wen Qing) who risks his comfy position in the Wen Clan to betray Wen Chao and help Wei Wuxian and jiang cheng who are at the time on the opposing side! It's also not the same as Wei Wuxian choosing to have his core cut out and given to jiang cheng to keep his promise to YZY and JFM. Also, Wei Wuxian is instrumental in defeating the Wens in the war. If Wen Ning or Wen Qing were anything like jc it wouldn't have been surprising for them to hate or blame him for their diminished circumstances, but ofc they don't.
To me YanLi at Nightless City is similar to Jin Zixuan at the ambush. She shows up, she asks WWX to stop fighting. She doesn't seem to consider what will happen to him when he does, just as I don't think she considers what might happen to her being in an active battle field. I think in a way their privilege, and the fact that their ppl are there fighting, blinds them to how real and fatal those circumstances can be. And she is ultimately killed by a cultivator not a fierce corpse. People empowered by jgs, jgy and also jiang cheng's treatment of WWX.
As for the relationship of WWX/YanLi/jc... marital siblings, childhood friends, with jc there's the rivalry aspect. In an interview when asked about WWX and JC's relationship MXTX brought up XXC's relationship with XY. No, not the fanon one, the canon one. So....🌝 jc's relationship with WWX was meant to be broken. As Jiang Fengmian warned jc that anger is not an excuse... But ultimately I think it was something to be outgrown and left behind. Even WWX's relationship with YanLi. Which is why that tree scene where WWX jumped in her arms and then later jumps into Lan Wangji's arms, who catches him without letting him get hurt, is so moving and significant.
homemaker wwx au
modern au - large extended Lan family - more omegaverse tropes
so for this au, I want to lean more into a submissive wwx. he will still be smart (Molecular gastronomist major in uni) but after losing his parents and suffering the abuse and abandonment from the jiangs, he just wants a stable home and family so doesn't mind handing over control with lwj who can provide it. also, he knows lwj would never take advantage of him.
mini backstory for wwx is the same as canon: his parents die and he's taken in by the jiangs. yzy is still abusive, wwx isn't the closest to jyl and jc even getting bullied by jc. at age 14 jfm buys wwx a small cheap apartment and gives him enough money in his account to sustain himself each month before leaving him on his own. Facing ridicule from his peers WWX transfers schools (he has to go to jfm’s office and ask for his signature) since omegaverse is an exploration of gender imo, WWX wears the girls uniform and switches back and forth depending on how he feels. Something he wasn’t allowed to do under the Jiangs household. There he meets wq, wn, nhs and LWJ.
For the Lans everyone is alive and they’re one big happy family. Lan An is the grandpa who’s a romantic and still very much in love with his wife who passed away. Qhj and madam Lan are alive and well and happily married. Lqr is the doting uncle because he didn’t have to raise his nephews and still has the influence of his father. Lan Yi is the rich aunt who shows up to the family functions with a new partner every time. There are more Lan family members and they get together for everything! Birthdays, holidays, graduations, a work promotion. These people love getting together. When Madam Lan learns about Wwx, she tells LWJ to invite him to the next get-together. he's basically adopted into the Lan family. they adore him and love his cooking (he had to get good at it for survival since he lived alone and then it became a passion/comfort hence his major) and they are just waiting for lwj to claim him. lwj himself wants to be worthy of wwx, so he waits until after they both graduate uni to propose. (they are already living together and dating while in uni)
one day at work (he works at a flower shop) an old woman approaches him saying he looks like someone familiar to her. turns out it's bssr, his grandmother. they get together and explain how she didn't know about him (her and cssr had a falling out and cssr eloped with wcz and they never reconnected) she didn't know her daughter died or that she had a grandson. anyway for a year wwx leaves lwj to spend time not only with bssr and the rest of her family but he gets to meet the Wei's.
while he's gone, lxc introduces to the family his omega, meng yao. I don’t want to back them bad guys but there will be tension involved. Jgy wants to be accepted by the family so he does his best to be the perfect son in law (they’re not married yet btw) and he is accepted into the Lans. Fast forward to WWX coming back. Jgy and LXC are excited to share news about Jgy’s achievement since it’s rare for omegas to last long in his field. The Lans congratulate him but some are confused cause Jgy is more work oriented than following societal norms. Enter LWJ who was running late because he went to pick WWX up at the airport (he also tried to initiate car s*x but was stopped lol). Anyway the Lans attention turns towards WWX. Jgy sees the Lans in a new light with WWX around. Lqr who he always talked to respectfully and didn’t try to overstep his boundaries is now loudly yelling and chasing WWX around the living room. Madam Lan who is always supportive and kind to him is pampering WWX, something he’s only seen her do to her sons. The children are a lot more lively playing along with WWX’s mischief. The Lans don’t treat him badly and in fact treat him better than his father ever has but this is different than what he’s used too. LXC notice’s Jgy’s mood plummeting. He speaks to LWJ basically insinuating that LWJ shouldn’t have brought WWX today cause now no one is recognizing Jgy (Jgy’s achievement was kept secret though). LWJ ignores him and they go back to where the other alpha’s are.
In the other room with the omegas and children, Jgy makes a pointed comment at WWX about his time with the Jiangs, thinking that he lived lavishly while Jgy had a rough upbringing. Anyway WWX gets up and leaves the room having a panic attack. Madam Lan has to get LWJ to calm him down. Madam Lan is obviously pissed, but keeps control of herself. She leaves to get a plate of food to give the two while they’re resting (panic attacks are mad draining lol). Back with the others who are now pissed at Jgy for ruining such a happy moment and upsetting their favorite nephew. Jgy’s plan of gaining sympathy backfired. LXC pulls him to the side exasperated but understanding Jgy’s train of thought explains why his family is upset and about WWX’s past. Thinking everything has been resolved, LXC goes to reassure his mother but it only infuriated her more. She calls Jgy an outsider and that LXC had no right to tell about WWX’s past. LWJ walks in, in the middle of the argument. He becomes furious attacking his brother. The other alphas break them apart but it’s WWX that gets LWJ to calm down. LWJ says that LXC can’t be trusted not only because of this but I have a past event I’m debating on adding or not as well but wangxian leave the party to go home. Feeling frustrated that her family is in shambles and the party was ruined madam Lan storms off to her with QHJ following her. The others eat a tense dinner before going home early.
Wangxian on the other hand unwinds with a bubble bath and soft s*x, formalizing their bond with matching bites, no longer wanting to wait until the mating ceremony. A couple weeks go by and LWJ returns to work (Rich king can work from home) when WWX gets back into the routine of stopping by at his job to bring him (+ Lqr’s lonely ass) lunch. LXC tries to speak with him but outside of greetings WWX is forbade from speaking with him so he runs away.
A few months later everything has calmed down though there’s the occasional side eye from someone in the family towards xiyao but the next event is better than the first. The rule to not speak with lxc is lifted and the biweekly sunday dinners with just the main Lan family starts again (LWJ was ghosting the but then his parents and uncle started showing up at his house instead lol)
Further down the line when xiyao and wangxian are both married WWX gets pregnant first. Everyone is happy but Jgy. Feeling like he doesn’t measure up to the favorite son in law who’s now giving grandchildren and feeling like a failure for not giving his alpha children (this isn’t coming from the Lans but societal pressure and his bastard father).
After that just wangxian fluff with baby A-yuan
where do we begin (the rubble or our sins) by KouriArashi
Tumblr media
where do we begin (the rubble or our sins)
by KouriArashi
T, 42k, wangxian
Summary:  Five days after Jiang Yanli’s death, she wakes up in the Jin family tomb.
Two days after that, Wei Wuxian arrives at Cloud Recesses with no memory.
My comments:  Aaaahhh, this was such a SATISFYING fix it, I'm just. Completely happy with the way everything went.
What a fast read, too: I feel like I only JUST sat down.
In which wwx lives, and jyl revives (several days after her death); jc mysteriously loses his golden core and little a-yuan drags his lan zhan out of seclusion to fetch his a-die out of the snow. Wwx remembers NOTHING, at first (and lwj does that thing where he claims they're in a relationship... is there a tag for that? It bites him in the ass when wwx remembers, though).
POV swaps between Cloud Recesses (where lxc helps keep wwx a secret) and Koi Tower, where jyl shows that she's a velvet-gloved badass, and spies to see what is going on. (She figured out wwx must be alive very quickly, bc she got all the brains in that family.)
So events go differently, but things still come to a head at Burial Mounds. Luckily, with all these smart people working together as a team, they should be able to handle whatever comes up.
canon divergence, angst, fix it of sorts, temporary amnesia, kid fic, emotional hurt/comfort, grief/mourning, jiang family feels, lan family feels, amnesia, 33 lashes, jiang yanli lives, golden core reveal, golden core loss, BAMF jiang yanli, sect leader jiang yanli, badass jiang yanli, strong female characters, spy jiang yanli, thoughtful lan wangji, domestic, second chances, brotherly feels, sisterly feels, reconciliation, somebody lives/not everyone dies, happy ending, @gingersnapwolves
(You may wish to REBLOG as a signal boost for this author if you like – or think others might like – this story.)
2. Hello! Thank you for all the work you do in finding and recommending fics!! Presently, I am in the mood for Twin Prides of Yunmeng fics (although specifically ones where Jiang Yanli is still alive, so I suppose I should say Yunmeng Trio to be more accurate) protecting each other and being siblings, or fics that pertain to JC, JY, and WWX trying to protect and support each other from Jiang Fengmian and Yi Ziyuan’s A+ Parenting. Once again thank you so much and I hope you have a wonderful day!!
Every so often I’ll come across a fic that has a summary that essentially reads: “after JFM brings WWX to Lotus Pier YZY takes JC to MeishanYu where he becomes the sect heir” and it always acts like this situation is a fix-it for the entire plot of the novel. And I was thinking about this premise over the past few days and realising just how little it makes sense. (I would like to clarify that I have not read any of the fics with this premise but that is because they all look to be written by JC stans and I decided a while ago that I wasn’t interested in anything like that. I would also like to say that I have only the vaguest understanding of Chinese culture so if something is glaring wrong in here I accept corrections.)
So. The logistics of the events coming to pass. The summaries imply that YZY left Lotus Pier with JC in tow, marched into her natal sect and without question JC was named sect heir and never had any problems ever.
Firstly: if YZY is such an amazing mother to take her son away from the ‘awful’ environment of Lotus Pier under JFM, why does she leave her daughter there? There never seems to be any mention of JYL also going to Meishan so this really just feels like YZY doesn’t actually care about anyone other than JC (in a similar way to the author not caring about anyone other than JC).
Secondly: the actual inheritance thing. As far as I can tell YZY and therefore JC are so far down the line of inheritance for the MeishanYu sect that it doesn’t actually matter. JFM calls YZY ‘Third Lady’ which based on my understanding means that she has two older sisters who would be the First and Second Ladies. In the line of succession her eldest sister would be first, then her children, then her second sister, that sister’s children, and then YZY and JC behind them (this isn’t even taking into account any older brothers she might have). I think I read somewhere that marriage order is based at least partially on age so we can assume that the two older sisters got married before YZY, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that the eldest child of the eldest daughter could be fifteen when JC is nine, so at the very least the eldest sister could have a child who is close to being of age (though I freely admit that I have little idea as to what is classed as ‘of age’ within this world) while the son YZY brings is a child who throws a tantrum over having his pets sent away for someone else’s mental health and being told he’s going to share a room.
(Sidenote: I know JFM has JC’s dogs sent away but for all we know they’re just taken out of Lotus Pier itself (as in the bit where the cultivators live). We know there’s a market area where non-cultivators live literally right outside so rather than sending three puppies miles away to other cities, couldn’t JFM have just found someone living outside of the cultivator’s part of Lotus Pier to give the dogs to? Wouldn’t that have been the easiest option? And one that could potentially allow JC to visit the dogs he was so upset about? Did he just not ask to see them so JFM decided that he didn’t actually care about them? Did JC go see them every week until they died and was just angry that he wasn’t allowed to own them anymore? What proof do we have that JC never saw those dogs ever again?)
Anyway, back on track. Thirdly: YZY married out of the MeishanYu sect and into the YunmengJiang sect. She was very insistent on this. She wanted this a great deal even though we know that JFM didn’t particularly want to marry her. I believe that by the culture of the time marrying out of a family meant you were no longer part of that family. Like you might visit or write and introduce your children to them but you weren’t part of the family in the sense that you weren’t in the line of inheritance for anything of that family. So YZY marching into her natal sect with her bratty son behind her, declaring that he would be the sect heir to MeishanYu honestly reads to me as YZY flat out not understanding anything about how family inheritance works. She married into YunmengJiang. By the rules of the time, she should be devoted to building up the YunmengJiang sect, not leaving and returning to her natal sect because she doesn’t like the mother of the child her husband brought in off the streets. JC especially isn’t in line for inheriting MeishanYu because he is a member of the Jiang clan. Honestly the best equivalent I can think of is if people expected Jin Ling, heir (and sect leader and the end of the novel) to LanlingJin to also take over the running of YunmengJiang even though nowhere is it implied that he’s in any way in line of that — JYL married out, any children of hers were part of the Jin clan with no inheritance in the Jiang clan (it’s also for this reason that I am firmly of the belief that Jin Ling was mostly raised at Koi Tower rather than Lotus Pier, who lets the heir to a sect be entirely raised by another sect? For all we know Jin Ling spends a couple of months a year with JC and the novel just happened to take place during those months, and it’s saying something if Jin Ling spends the entire time he has per year with JC running away on night hunts without JC there). So, to put a long point short: YZY married out of the MeishanYu sect and has literally no inheritance there and neither do her children.
Also, at this point hasn’t she essentially kidnapped the heir to YunmengJiang? I doubt JFM is going to say “oh you don’t like my best friends’ son so you want to take our son away. Of course you can do that I have no problem at all with losing my sect heir due to your petty dislike of someone who has been dead for years now. Goodbye.” JFM may not really stand up to YZY, but there’s some things even he isn’t going to tolerate from her. So YZY is causing a political disaster between her natal sect and the sect she married into by kidnapping the sect heir of one and attempting to make him the sect heir of the other. At the very least I feel like JFM could divorce her on the grounds of kidnapping his son and trying to depose the sect heir of her natal sect in favour of a child who by law cannot inherit that sect.
From what I can tell these fics look like they’re set up to be fix-its. Again, I haven’t read them, but I can feel just by reading the summaries and glancing over the tags that they’re intended to be stories about how without the father who ‘hates him so much’ and ‘that awful WWX who always held him back from his true potential’ that JC is so much happier and more skilled and also absolutely going to be the best person in their generation at everything and in at least one of these it looks like he ends up marrying LXC (which is just. No). Honestly it could be a fix-it for JYL and WWX who would no longer be being berated for their general existence (WWX) and hobbies (JYL, specifically how she likes to cook). Them growing up without YZY constantly breathing down their necks and having better mental health as a consequence? Yes please.
Honestly I wouldn’t mind seeing something where the concept was written by someone who didn’t think that ‘actually all the positive traits of other characters are JC’s character traits and also JC should have been the main character’. Something where it’s set up as YZY taking JC with her to Meishan, expecting everything to obviously work out the way she wants, only to be shot down. Her eldest sister is potentially sect leader if their parents have stepped down and has a fifteen-year-old child who everyone in the sect is pleased with as their sect heir. YZY and her expectations get shot down, it’s made clear that she and JC aren’t even in the line of succession since they’re officially part of YunmengJiang and not MeishanYu, and she’s told to leave. She returns to Lotus Pier, angry but still convinced everything there will go her way because JFM has never stood up to her before, only to get back and find JFM in the process of organising their divorce. This isn’t an internal matter due to her not doing the duties expected of the mistress of Lotus Pier anymore, this is a political matter where she kidnapped the sect heir and tried to depose the sect heir of MeishanYu. She’s legally part of YunmengJiang, her actions reflect on the sect as a whole and could be taken as hostile intent. Really the only way to keep this from potentially escalating is to divorce her so that everyone knows her actions aren’t condoned by JFM individually and YunmengJiang as a whole. The end result is that instead of JC somehow fixing everything as a result of having less political influence/lower status than before (sect heir of MeishanYu which is a minor sect compared to the sect heir of YunmengJiang which is a great sect) and without an extremely loyal WWX supporting him, YZY instead undergoes some consequences for once in her life and the family dynamic of the Jiangs + WWX might even manage to be healthier without her constantly being around to antagonise everyone.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure YZY’s children would be so far down the line of succession that they’d have to murder a bunch of people to stand a chance of ruling Meishan, and her taking JC, the heir to the Jiang sect, to another sect without his father’s permission and with the intention of deposing the rightful heir of that sect would be... just a bit of a problem, yeah. Also like. I suspect the reason YZY doesn’t canonically do that is because not even sheis that stupid. That goes beyond being a bitch and straight into Actual Crimes. Also love the idea that JC, the most useless of all the great sect leaders, would be less useless in a position of infinitely less power. ...To be fair he would certainly do a lot less damage.
ep15 (part 2): fucked up!!!! fucked up!!!
Tumblr media
Zhang Jing Tong (myu actress) did SUCH a great job with the expressions. you can see the instant she realizes that lp is going to be some kind of office under the wen sects rather than retaining their autonomy, and you can see exactly how she feels about it. this is the breaking point. not being forced to remove the hand of their top disciple, but being forced to give over authority of their home
Tumblr media
the FUNNIEST possible thing to say to a famously ferociously angry woman who's about to fucking snap
Tumblr media
cql passes the bechdel test, everyone 👍
Tumblr media
this line is like one of the top lines in the show. it says so much about how she views wwx and their dynamic. 'she just wanted to push him to his full potential' my ASS. this is all about her prestige and her power
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always feel a little guilty for cheering her on when she's being so classist and elitist. a weird thing the show does. also at the end with lxc slapping jgy. with a protag like wwx, you're still going to lean into sect hierarchies like that?
all this to say. this is a very satisfying scene to watch unforch
Tumblr media
the way wwx is STUNNED by j&y taking out the wens. he was so sure he'd lose a hand
Tumblr media
IN THROUGH THE WINDOW COMES WZL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
finding out a not-insignificant subsection of the fanbase shipped them was wild to me. this is their only interaction before they fight to the death
maybe bc of the donghua? I don't remember the donghua too well. their myu was neat tho
Tumblr media
politest guy about to commit atrocities ever
Tumblr media
oh my god the flare is in the wen clan seal pattern. if I saw this in a fic I'd roll my eyes but canon is already just. like that
Tumblr media
fucked up!!!! she never hugs him and them she does this!! fucked up!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she hates him and told him to his face that if he had to die for jc he better do it but of course she was doing this all to unleash his inner potential. fucked up!!!
Tumblr media
a line from the book I remember so clearly is how powerless wwx and jc felt when fleeing the massacre...I think this shot conveys that really well
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jc struggling and hurting wwx but wwx doesn't say anything bc of course he doesn't and jc doesn't notice bc of course he's not focused on that! ough!
Tumblr media
IS SHE CRYING??!!! FUCK!!!!
Tumblr media
hey why didn't jfm leave like. two disciples with his kids. seems irresponsible to bring them all back to die
also wild how wwx's special position means he wasn't sent back to die with them bc he def would have died back there. sob
Tumblr media
WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THAT. ITS A WHOLE SECT. THEY COULD HAVE SHELTERED THEM
Tumblr media
they are such babies oh my god
Tumblr media
this line just haunts me. CHILDREN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gently patting jc and jyl's cheeks and then telling them not to cry and it'll be alright...
Tumblr media
and then just telling his other semi-adopted child who is BLEEDING from the mouth 'take care of them!' god his favoritism couldn't have held out just a little more? wwx is clearly just as traumatized as the other two and HERE is where jfm suddenly decides his bio kids are more worth comforting
Tumblr media
SOMETHING ABOUT! loved ones leaving them forever on boats, gliding away to their deaths...jyl has that dream about wwx too, doesn't she? she watches him float away and she cant catch up to him no matter how hard she tries. hell.
MDZS AU idea that i've been entertaining myself with: WWX (accidently lol) kills basically everyone at Nightless City, but the apocalypse doesn't stop there...
- At Nightless City, when the sects have their pledge conference and WWX shows up and the fighting starts, somehow WWX is separated from Chenqing. Either someone manages to break the flute, or it gets flung off far into the distance, but either way, WWX is (seemingly) weaponless.
- The fight rapidly goes south for WWX. He's quickly surrounded and it becomes clear that he's going to lose. Probably, they're going to burn him alive like they did to WQ if they get their hands on him. So WWX does what seems sensible when he's backed into a corner and knows he's going to die: he pulls out the stygian tiger seal and destroys it. He warns everyone what he's going to do, and to get back - and either they don't listen, thinks he's bluffing, or simply don't hear.
- This kills... almost everyone. Unlike in canon when it happened in the burial mounds, and the seal animated all the corpses around into extremely strong fierce corpses that ripped WWX to shreds, there aren't enough corpses for the seal to direct it's energy into at Nightless City. (Like, there are still a bunch, but nowhere near burial mounds levels.) So instead, it floods all the cultivators surrounding WWX with resentful energy, overwhelming them enough that they die, or setting off a qi deviation which kills them. WWX is ground zero of this resentful energy bomb: he explodes or dissolves into dust - he's very dead. JGS and JGY are at the forefront of the mob and basically right next to WWX - they die. So do all of the Jin cultivators who followed them to the pledge conference, because they're also super close to the seal when it goes off. Half of the Jiang cultivators are in the mob around WWX and die as well. A good third to a half of the Lan and Nie cultivators there die as well. Those 33 Lan elders and a bunch of Lan main-clan cultivators? All dead. Entire minor sects who were in that mob are wiped out in a moment.
- So, if we do a roll call of what happened to our named characters when WWX destroyed the seal:
JGS, JGY, and JZxun all die, along with almost the entirety of the Jin sect.
JYL, who followed WWX there, is not close enough to be completely overwhelmed, and only falls into a coma, lacking a strong enough core to fight off the resentful energy.
JC, who was running towards WWX when this happened (to kill him? probably. he's an angry boy), suffers a massive qi deviation, which dangerously destabilizes his (donated) core. He doesn't die, but his cultivation is reduced drastically, and permanently inhibited. The Jiang sect, still building itself up again, finds itself once again reduced to a bare few cultivators.
LXC is far enough back to only suffer a qi deviation and not die. NMJ is with him, and also suffers a qi deviation - exacerbated by his cultivation method already leaving him prone to them. LXC finds himself fighting off a crazed NMJ while having his own qi deviation, and is badly hurt (does he lose an arm? idk but maybe). Neither of them die but its close. NMJ's core is basically destroyed by this deviation. He can no longer cultivate afterwards.
LWJ is close to LXC and also suffers a massive qi deviation, exacerbated by watching the man he's in love with basically commit mass-murder-suicide. He's not permanently damaged by it, he can still cultivate, but his cultivation is harmed enough that afterwards he'll be in seclusion for years to heal and rebuild what was lost from his golden core.
Su She is still in with the Lan disciples. Lmao he fuckin dies.
On the other hand, LQR is a scholar, not a fighter or politician, so he's back in Gusu for this.
The entirety of the Yao and Ouyang sect who are there die. This leaves the remnants of these sects as basically the women, children, elderly, and servants who were left behind at home. So rest assured that baby Zizhen is safe at home with his nurse for this.
The same holds true for a bunch of other small sects who were (mostly) pledged to the Jin and Jiang. They lose, at minimum, half of their cultivators in this event. A few are wiped out completely.
Of course, the Nightless City pledge conference was kind of a big deal, politically, for the cultivation world, so even those larger minor clans who aren't pledged specifically to a major clan, like the Chang and Meishan Yu clans, also lose a good number of their people to death or qi deviation at this conference.
Of those who were at the Nightless City and survive, pretty much all of them suffer some kind of qi deviation with long-term effects. By and large, everyone who lived got majorly nerfed.
- Basically, what I'm saying, is that this is a doomsday scenario for the cultivation world. Entire sects are lost in a moment, including almost all of the Jin sect, and certainly all of the Jin clan's main family, and of those who survive, their cultivation is almost certainly damaged in some way. Ancient China suddenly finds that there are almost no strong cultivators remaining. Sects find that anything they didn't write down is suddenly lost knowledge. The population of cultivators in the world, which had already taken a big hit during the sunshot campaign, finds itself halved yet again, and the overall power of those remaining cultivators is greatly reduced.
My Epic MDZS/The Untamed Daemon AU
I’m sure other people have already done Daemon AUs, but this idea wouldn’t leave me alone. I have been working on this for like three weeks now.
I just wrote down my first instinctive thought for most characters, and then researched* further into subspecies etc. What I found for a lot of the animals made me agree with my first opinion even more, although all of these are obviously just my own opinions. I also decided to stick to non-mythological animals. (some characters have been given a lot more consideration than others, I’m sorry)
Wei Wuxian: beech marten Beech martens are quick and clever. The are nocturnal, omnivores, and skilled swimmers. They move through paths made by larger animals such as hares in the snow. {further notes under read more}
Lan Wangji: white hare More solitary animals. They have an association with the moon, which I tend to associate LWJ with. {f/n}
Jiang Cheng: osprey Aquatic birds; good hunters. {f/n}
Lan Xichen: white stag {f/n}
Jiang Yanli: asian black bear {explained in detail under the read more}
Jin Zixuan: lion Ngl it’s probably because the Persian pokemon reminds me of him
Jin Guangyao: domestic cat {f/n}
Nie Huiasang: pangolin {f/n}
Nie Mingju: wolf {f/n}
Wen Qing: Chinese sparrowhawk {f/n}
Wen Ning: black Formosan mountain dog (tuguo) {f/n}
Lan Sizhui: Xiasi Quan dog or red panda or badger {f/n}
Jin Ling: lion {f/n}
Lan Jingi: monkey They’re respected animals but also have a mischievous side
Ouyen Zihzen: capybara No, they’re not native to China, but this is what I imagined him as and I couldn’t get it out of my head or find a perfect substitute
Xiao Xinchen: swan He just gives me major swan vibes, possibly something to do with Swan Lake (as do some Lans but they’re not graceful in the same way or tragic in the same way)
Song Lan: oriental hobby falcon or black horse He struck me as some sort of raptor, but I also liked a horse for him
Luo Qingyang/Mianmian: lynx
Lan Qiren: sheep Symbolise filial piety. Also follow other people without question (*cough* the Lan Sect elders)
Jiang Fengiman: otter Spends a lot of time around the water, just what popped into my head
Yu Ziyuan: snake Because Zidian
The Jiang Sect favour animals who live near or on the water, some even possessing daemons which are fully aquatic, and thus are unable to leave Lotus Pier
The Lan Sect usually have herbivore animals for daemons and favour swift, elegant animals.
The Jins tend towards lions and panthers, but also flashy, rich birds like pheasants and peacocks (which makes WWX’s nickname for JZX even more funny).
The Nies often have pack or herd animals. Wolves and mountain lions are very common, but also a lot of horned animals like oxen, mountain goats and sheep (bighorn sheep and ibex are common), and also wild boar.
The Wens were typically birds of prey (the Dire Owl becomes Wen Chao’s daemon) or mountain cats.
The Yus often have daemons which take reptile form. Wildcats also common.  I quite like the idea that the Yus are a sect which has cultivated the ability to separate themselves from their daemons.
~Further notes on why I picked these animals, Daemon settling, angsty AUs of my AU, and research disclaimer under the cut~
Story & Research Notes:
(I’m going with the idea that trauma can make a daemon settle into a particular form)
WWX A marten was the first thing to come to mind for WWX, I have no idea why, but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. They’re really inquisitive, playful, and cute, but are also predators and will fuck you up if necessary.  A crow was another obvious choice because they’re curious and inventive, but with a bit of a dark connotation. However, in my version at least (I’m not great on His Dark Materials canon), Daemons usually settle in the early teens, and at that point WWX really didn’t have as much darkness in him as he develops later.
I think WWX was one of those people whose daemon changed with every thought and feeling of his, whose daemon changed so rapidly and so repeatedly that people would complain of motion sickness watching it. His daemon’s most common forms were a martin, a magpie, an otter (which drove Madam Yu nuts), and (after JYL’s settled) very occasionally a bear.
When WWX comes back most people don’t realise anything is wrong because Mo Xuanyu always hid his daemon (I think it was probably something like a field mouse although how funny would it be if Little Apple was actually his daemon and WWX unknowingly inherited her along with the body), so they just think his has settled into something too big to hide now. However, his beech martin is the other reason Lan Wangji knows who Wei Wuxian is (WWX’s daemon hides from Jiang Cheng at Dafan Mountain, so JC only suspects it’s WWX). (Angsty AU further down)
LWJ I know that arctic hares aren’t native to China, but I want you to pretend that something like that does exist because I need lwj to have a white hare daemon. They are also bigger than other hares and cuter (they look slightly less cursed than some hares do). I’m imagining a lot of the daemons being slightly bigger than their real-life animal counterparts would be, so imagine the ears coming up to a normal person’s hip-height when the daemon is sitting. Rabbits can also apparently symbolise hope, and that suits someone who is known to go where the chaos is, bringing hope and light in the darkness.
As a child, LWJ’s daemon was expressive in a way he never could be. It liked to take snow leopard form a lot, which was seen as excessively violent to the Lan sect, who preferred non-carnivorous animals, and often snarled at people. His daemon always took snow leopard form when visiting his mother so it could curl up with her tiger daemon.
LWJ’s daemon settled exceptionally early, shortly after his mother’s death, into an acceptable hare form. Lan Xichen always wondered if LWJ himself made his daemon settle, if she was not supposed to have been a snow leopard all along, and so always looks upon LWJ’s daemon with a bit of sadness because he feels like it was LWJ stifling - almost killing off - a part of his personality (spoiler: it was) in order to fit into the Lan sect.
(More on that in an angsty AU below)
JC Ngl, I wanted to make Jiang Cheng a goose because they’re always angry but I didn’t. Jiang Cheng shifted mostly between a hunting dog and a mouse as a child, both of which infuriated Yu Ziyuan (honestly what she wanted her children’s daemons to be even I don’t know). Jiang Cheng’s daemon settled very late (another thing his mother wasn’t happy with). In fact, it didn’t settle till the attack on Lotus Pier and the death of his parents, when it took the shape of an osprey (because he wanted to be able to fly away and pretend none of it ever happened).
Even more angsty: One Chinese poem has the Osprey as a symbol of marital harmony and fidelity. Upon seeing his parents death, finally united in a way they hadn’t been in life, JC’s constant wish for his parents to love each other (and, by extension, him) physically manifests itself in his daemon.
JYL I know what you’re thinking. Why the hell did you give Jiang Yanli a bear of all people. Well I’ll tell you. For two reasons: one, because I can do what I want, and two, because I would say one of JYL’s most central characteristics is her wish to look after people. She’s not physically strong in the way most other cultivators are, however, and she’s always having to keep the peace at home - and so I can see her daemon becoming a physical manifestation of that need to protect (bears are known to be protective, particularly mothers), and a physical example of her inner strength which is so often overlooked.
Yanli shifted between a dove, a crane, and a maritime striped squirrel for most of her childhood. She favoured the squirrel and dove (incredibly mild animals) over the crane, which disappointed Madam Yu.  It’s one of the reasons Jin Zixuan never saw her as a potential match, her daemon too small and docile to match his almost constant lion daemon.
When Jiang Yanli was around fourteen Madam Yu took things with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng too far one day, and Yanli saw it. Her daemon suddenly shifted into a bear, a form it had never taken up to that point, and jumped on Yu Ziyuan’s snake daemon. WWX and JC always remembered Yanli standing in the doorway, her expression placid while her huge bear daemon growled with absolute fury and menace. Everyone expected Yanli’s daemon to go back to its usual squirrel or dove form, but it never did. It remained a bear, and remained the biggest daemon of pretty much anyone in any of the sects.
I had already picked a crane as one of JYL’s potential daemons because of its connection to water and positive symbolism in China. Upon further (hopefully accurate) research, I saw that cranes depicted with lotuses in Chinese art symbolise purity and longevity, and I liked making her daemon a bear even more, because her daemon took that form to protect WWX and JC - years after her death, they both wondered if, had her daemon had taken crane form, maybe she wouldn’t have died. From what I found, “crane” is also a homophone for 合 hé “peace, harmony”, which is a quality Jiang Yanli had much of, and tried to inspire in others.
LXC I think its LXC’s hairpiece which always makes me think of deer antlers (even though it’s a dragon?), so that’s probably why I immediately thought of a stag for him. But stags are also very noble and refined looking animals which don’t tend towards violence, but also have horns for a reason. Obviously, like with LWJ, it’s a white stag because aesthetique. Upon further research, I discovered a (hopefully correct) source which says 鹿 lù (deer) is a homonym with 璐 lù (precious jade), and the character for deer is used within the character 丽 lì ‘beautiful; elegant’ - both fit LXC very well.
JGY Cats are sneaky little fuckers (I say this with love). The ultimate predator in small unassuming form. Many of the main Jin family have big cat daemons so this is kind of another smack in the face for JGY - so close to being a real part of the Jin family, but still kept apart from them - and something people like to bring up along with his mother. However, many Jins are also birds (including JGS), and cats prey on birds.
NHS I thought a fox was a bit on the nose. Also I like the way pangolin’s just drop and curl up in defence - it’s a viable form of protection, but to the outside appears cowardly. However, their scales are sharp and can cut predators who come after them. Also I didn’t want him to fit into any of his sect’s typical animals. Also also imagine how cute it would look being carried around everywhere by NHS because it’s too lazy to walk, absolutely adorable.
NMJ A wolf was what immediately came to mind for Nie Mingjue. Wolves are apparently sometimes associated with greed, self-interest, and lechery, but I think the pack elements and the carnivore/hunting nature of the wolf really suits NMJ and the Nie clan in general, so I decided to overlook that aspect (although I did briefly consider making JGS a wolf, but I like them as animals too much in real life to do that to them and also he doesn’t have a soul, so he doesn’t get a daemon).
WQ I always saw Wen Qing as some sort of hawk, I just think it suits her very well. The Chinese sparrowhawk is quite small and very beautiful. It has white, red and grey colours. They are good hunters and swift flyers.
WN I knew I wanted Wen Ning to be some sort of dog because he’s very loyal, and also (angsty) when the Jins call the Wens dogs I wanted that to hurt even more. He’s very unusual for a Wen, none of the main sect have dog daemons - it is very much a thing that is specific to their branch of the Wen family. The mountain dog I picked for him is an endangered breed, which I also felt fitted WN well. From what I found, dogs symbolise watchful wisdom, honesty, and loyalty, which all fit Wen Ning.
This was all perfect till I remembered WWX’s all-consuming fear of dogs. I decided to get round this by cheating and saying that for some reason daemons are different and he’s not scared of them (because they represent a part of someone’s soul, rather than being a real animal? I guess?? Please do not look too hard at this delicately constructed card tower)
Angsty version: when Wen Ning becomes a fierce corpse he loses his daemon, another reason people are unsettled by him and another thing WWX feels guilty about.
LSZ I think Lan Sizhui was the hardest to pick. I couldn’t decide which way to go: should he follow a “Lan approved” daemon pattern; should he have a bird like Wen Qing and a lot of other Wens? Then I saw the Xiasi Quan and it’s white and fluffy and cute but it was also a hunting and a guard dog, which seemed right for him. And I liked that it gave LSZ and WN this one very tangible connection. It is also endangered.  However, I also liked a red panda and a badger for Lan Sizhui too. I really couldn’t decide between the three. I like them all, why is he the hardest to choose for? (I’m still not 100% happy with this, let me know if you have any alternative suggestions)
Again, please suspend your disbelief at the fact that WWX’s child has a dog daemon and he’s fine with this (it would have looked so cute as a little puppy running around the Burial Mounds though).
When he was younger his daemon liked to take on the forms of those closest to him. So you’d often see a bby marten running after WWX’s daemon, a tiny bird perched with Wen Qing’s sparrow-hawk, a puppy following Wen Ning’s dog around, and a tiny bby rabbit in Cloud Recesses. As he got older it shifted between the dog, a red panda, and a badger. (maybe I’ll just say his hasn’t settled yet and that’s why I can’t decide)
JL Jin Ling definitely also had a daemon which shifted because of a) his loved ones and b) his mood, and he hated it. As if his own explosive temper didn’t give him away enough, his daemon always showed his exact feelings. When he wanted nothing more than his mother to be there it would be a bear. When he was feeling defensive about his parents it would turn into a lion (this happens when he and WWX first meet and any time people talk about his parents’ deaths). When he was younger his daemon spent a lot of time as a cat and a bird, although different types to what his uncles had.
Jin Ling’s daemon still hasn’t settled when WWX is resurrected, and he is absolutely mortified the one time it decides to turn into a beech marten like WWX’s. Eventually it will settle into a lion, and WWX will pretend to be grumpy that it didn’t choose a bear instead.
Angsty AUs:
Daemons are linked to golden cores Jiang Cheng loses his daemon along with his core. When Wei Wuxian’s core is removed it’s more like when daemons and humans are separated in the books. His daemon stays with him, but can move about freely - this is part of what causes WWX to rapidly destabilise, not just resentful energy. Jiang Cheng always feels weirdly aware of WWX’s daemon after that but doesn’t know why. WWX’s daemon is technically connected to JC too, and also finds this weird. JC also can’t work out why his daemon never came back with his golden core, and that loss is part of why he’s so angry and isolated.
The effect of trauma on Daemons Another angsty au is based on the idea that, if trauma can make your daemon settle early, then trauma can also make it change.
When Wei Wuxian is thrown into the Burial Mounds, he wishes so hard to be able to fly that his beech marten turns into a crow (because I do love a crow for him too). I kind of like the idea that after the Burial Mounds WWX’s daemon almost un-settles itself, and can change between a marten and a crow. This really freaks people out and is another reason people say he’s dangerous.
Similarly, after Wei Ying’s death and the Lan sect’s punishment, Lan Wangji wakes up to find his daemon has shifted from its hare to snow leopard form. In his soul, LWJ feels like if he had been less passive and actually stood with WWX then his soulmate would still be alive. His daemon changes from a more passive hare to the more aggressive snow leopard.
He’s criticised by the elders for it, but they shut up when his daemon flattens theirs, while LWJ’s face remains an impassive mask but his eyes promise murder. WWX is really sad when he comes back to see LWJ’s hare gone and blames himself for causing LWJ so much trauma his daemon changed. (personally if I were writing a Daemon AU this is what I would have happen, because I love LWJ with a snow leopard daemon - they symbolise bravery and martial ferocity, while rabbits are virtue and gentleness, and I feel like these two both accurately represent the two sides of LWJ. I really feel like LWJ has a huge shift in himself after WWX’s death which would be represented in his daemon. It also is, in a way, a return of a core part of himself which was lost after his mother’s death)
Sword/Instrument substitute Mixing Daemons with sword sprits - the animal becomes a physical representation of the spiritual tool. Some people could therefore have more than one daemon (for example, LWJ could have Bichen - his rabbit sword daemon - and Wangji - his snow leopard guqin daemon)
Angsty version: WWX actually does die in the burial mounds and Suibian, his beech martin, dies/changes into Chenqing, a raven/crow.
If you are reading this you have made it to the end of this post, well done.
 I wanted to make it shorter but I had too many ideas and wanted to explain my reasoning for my choices and decided just to put it all in one post rather than lots of little ones.
*Disclaimer: I know only the smallest amount of Chinese, and have taken all my information about imagery, word meanings, and homophones etc from web-sources, and so it is very possible I have made mistakes. Though I have, to the best of my abilities, attempted to check on the cultural/artistic meaning, if any, that certain animals have in Chinese culture, the internet lies and I can’t get any decent books on it atm as the libraries are closed, so I’m really sorry if there are errors and I hope people will forgive any mistakes or blunders I might have made.
Thank you @mika--82 for the question! I’m sorry it took so long but since I really enjoyed plotting out my Cangse Sanren lives au, and I think a lot about the women in The Untamed who didn't get to see their children grow up, strap in for round two of TB Revives the Mothers of the Untamed. This week's episode: Save Mama Lan by killing Lan Qiren \^.^/
(Many thanks to @drwcn for letting me borrow her hc names for Mama Lan (Qui Baiti) and Papa Lan (Lan Cenrong). You can read more about them on her blog here and here.)
(Warning for an unsuccessful suicide attempt)
QBT has been isolated in the Jingshi for a decade. She only sees her sons once a month, she isn’t allowed her sword, and her spiritual power is kept sealed
But LWJ inherited his stubbornness from his mum and she's determined to escape, one way or another
LQR is walking by the Jingshi when he feels a massive surge of energy and breaks his first ever Discipline (no running in Cloud Recesses)
He wrenches the Jingshi door open and sees an array that wouldn't look out of place two decades in the future in an alternate universe in a dingy shed behind Mo Manor
LQR breaks his second Discipline in as many minutes (do not make excessive noise) when he screams for his brother before he grabs QBT and drags her out of the array
LQR didn't have time to think, let alone study what the effects of that might be, all he knew was that it was killing her, and that her death would kill the brother he loves more than anything else
The backlash strikes him and he keels over
QBT gathers him up, sobbing and asking why he did it, she wanted to die, why did you do it Lan-er-gongzi? what were you thinking? Your brother loves you
LQR meets his brother’s eyes as he appears over her shoulder, the terrified disciples flanking him a white blur
He smiles and says I know
Curtains on LQR
(alternatively, we can just kill JGS again because ngl that was real satisfying the first time around)
Now the Elders are in a pickle because this may have been an accident but QBT has now been responsible for the deaths of an Elder and Second Young Master Lan
It's decided that the only option is exile
QBT is forbidden from setting foot in Cloud Recesses and the territories of Gusu Lan for ten year and forbidden from speaking to any Lan disciple during that time
She bows, accepts back the plain sword she had yielded when she came through the gates to be married, and is gone before the dawn. LCR watches her leave and then goes to wake their sons
Now, QBT was a wandering cultivator long before she was Lan-furen and actually really enjoys returning to life on the road
I wandered once! I can do it again!
Five years later she meets XXC battling a ferocious demon snake and together they defeat it
QBT definitely doesn’t feel her heart beat a little faster at the youthful face, white robes, and elegant jade-and-silver sword
She answers XXC's graceful bow with one of her own and the two spend a week clearing out the fierce nests of demons on the mountain
The next time their wandering brings them together she is introduced to my good friend Song Lan and hides her smile in her sleeve
Meanwhile in Cloud Recesses without LQR to pick up the slack LCR is forced to step out of seclusion and actually run his sect and parent his children
He does a very good job
QBT has to fight back proud tears every time she hears Twin Jades of Lan spoken of with awe
Ten years to the day of her exile QBT is grinning as she climbs the long flights of stairs towards the gates of Cloud Recesses
Part of that might be the entertaining company she walks with
A young man clutching two bottles of Emperor's Smile and talking so fast she’s only half listening while she tries to figure out if he’s actually taken a breath since introducing himself
Talking at breakneck speed of the young master who had been so strict with him at the gates, aiya Auntie! He was so cold! you should have seen his stony face
QBT only grins harder as WWX climbs the wall, is challenged, and blades flash over tiles (it might bring back fond memories of her own youth)
She slips over the wall while they are distracted and once WWX is silenced she reaches out her hand
You handle your sword beautifully, may I?
LWJ can't even say why - it's too dark to see her face and the voice is roughened after 10 years on the road - but he hands Bichen over without a second thought
She sighs as she runs a finger over the blade and the steel glows, lighting up her face (solely because I think glowy Bichen is very sexy and we should have had more of it in the drama honestly)
Bichen suits you better than it ever suited me, ZhanZhan
LWJ is emoting all over the place (so embarrassing)
(luckily his back is to WWX because if baby disaster bi WWX saw that smile he would've died on the spot)
WWX of course is still a troublemaking rule breaker and LWJ is still charged with overseeing his punishment
QBT and LXC are united in their LWJ should make friends agenda and LXC inherited his sense of humour and delight for teasing LWJ from QBT
Between the two of them LWJ soon has more friends than he knows what to do with
QBT and LXC co-captain the good ship Wangxian
Of course plot stuff still happens including accidental-marriage-before-a-Quest-Ghost
XXC and SL meet them in Yueyang and when LWJ introduces himself they're thrilled because hey we know your mum! she’s real cool!
They don't trust the clans and they might've heard of NMJ but they know Qui-jiejie and they trust her and so they decide XY will go to Cloud Recesses for judgement
N-wow the twin jades are really deserving of their reputations-HS insists on a Qinghe representative going too
oh me? no no Wei-xiong this has been quite enough adventure for me. Meng Yao you'll go won't you? Dage trusts you and Lan-gongzi admired your *delicate cough* capability *innocent smile*
my.blush.com/embarrassed/yearning agrees
QBT is delighted to see XXC and SL again and happily introduces them to her elder son
SL and LXC almost immediately get into a heated debate over ahistorical fantasy chinese philosophy and/or politics and are instantly bonded
QBT may or may not have instigated said debate with a well-timed quote from a well-known (re: divisive) text
Basically QBT shares my get LXC more friends agenda
SL is, again, the first person (apart from LXC and his parents) to laugh at LWJ's jokes
WWX still refuses to believe this actually happened (the joke and SL laughing) (XXC swears it’s true)
XY is locked in the back hills and eventually a) dies trying to use his hidden piece of the yin iron to break the seals OR b) is rehabilitated by the power of bunnies and become an outer disciple (reader's choice!)
XXC and SL accompany WWX and JC part of the way to Lotus Pier
Cloud Recesses is attacked, QBT and LCR send LXC and MY away with the sacred texts, MY promising he knows somewhere safe to hide
LWJ refuses to leave his parents. The losses are not as bad as in canon, the Wen are beaten back, but LCR and LWJ are both injured
No Good Very Bad Summer Camp with World's Worst Head Counselor WC
No Good Very Bad Turtle Cave of Love
WWX wakes post-rescue with LWJ still there
(Because his parents are holding Cloud Recesses and he knows LXC is safe so he doesn't need to rush off)
JZX, JC, LWJ, and WWX spend a day planning before they split up
(this is hilarious and JC says "fuck" not less than 219 times)
(WWX only almost punches JZX and it only happens twice honestly people should be grateful! he was so restrained!!)
They all return home, LWJ promising to bring reinforcements from Cloud Recesses to Lotus Pier (because it's the most obvious next target. no other reason. just. strategically it makes sense)
WQ sends WN to Lotus Pier to warn WWX when WZL's forces are on their way
When the Wen attack, they're met with a prepared force of 1) YZY and the Jiang Disciples 2) QBT, LWJ, and a contingent of Lan Disciples AND 3) JC and WWX and a gaggle of archers (seriously why tf show the Jiang being so good and then only give us two archery fight scene moments and it’s heart breaking sixth young master jiang dying and some rando ouyang disciple shooting WWX?)
Things get a little hairy but between YZY and QBT they defeat WZL and the rest of the Wen quickly surrender
JFM and JYL arrive just as the battle is ending, escorted by Madam Jin, JZX, LQY, and all the Jin Disciples who were at Cloud Recesses
(WWX: MianMian you came you must have been so worried about me! LQY, ignoring him: Lan-er-gongzi are you okay? WWX: ah Lan Zhan you MianMian really likes you! that’s lucky! LWJ, screaming internally: mn)
(JGS was furious when JZX announced he was joining the campaign but what could he possibly say in front of his battle ready wife without looking like the utter coward of a wet biscuit he is)
Once again WWX is left with a screaming sword, too much curiosity, and too much time on his hands (due to his adopted family being not-dead)
But worse he has now also access to a woman who created an array powerful enough to kill even with her spiritual power sealed
Poor WRH doesn't stand a chance, even without MY spying for the Sunshot Campaign
After the battle QBT&LCR and YZY&JFM shut JGS's bullshit power grab down real quick and JGS sulks like the baby he is (probably in a brothel) while Madam Jin and JZX take over Lanling Jin
JZX hears about MY and the way he helped LXC and NMJ sends a letter of support and JZX is already quite jealous of all these sibling bonds and welcomes Ziyao with open arms
(All of which goes slightly to waste when JZY marries out to the Lan clan slightly less than a year later but hey, at least it's a good alliance.)
WQ takes over the Wen Clan but tears down Nightless City and relocates the capital to Dafan
(WQ: have you been to Nightless City? It’s built on an active volcano. Do you know how bad sulfur ash is for open wounds? Do you know what medical herbs grow in lava slurry? None is the answer. My family are all fucking morons)
(WQ: Not you a-Ning you’re a delight and we’re thrilled you’re here)
Rumour has it a certain immortal was so impressed with the stories of the medical techniques of Dafan Wen that she paid WQ a visit
(Disciples are so reckless after all! One never knows when one might need to be capable of transplanting vital organs!)
Each year WWX and LWJ spend 3 months at Gusu, 3 months at Lotus Pier, and 6 months wandering with XXC and SL
They get "fake married" no less than four times in three years (for the investigation xiongzhang! absolutely no other reason shishu! no other reason at all!) before LXC, MY, XXC, and SL get fed up and barricade them in their room until they talk to each other dammit
(LXC is very grateful MY has gotten so handy with the silencing talismans because the 'conversation' gets uncomfortably loud real quick)
Side note to say Clarity works very well to avert a qi deviation when it's not being actively corrupted, thanks very much, and NMJ lives many, many, many years which would be entirely happy if only NHS would pick up his saber once in a while
He would tell NHS this if he could ever find him
Happy ending!³
