Lest anyone be confused, there are two very closely connected reasons why these politicians are so committed to pushing the idea that environmentalism and good jobs are mutually exclusive: one, they work for business interests that make money by harming the environment; and two, they fear the power of organized labor if it is focused in the correct direction. The farcical but somehow ongoing project of the Republican Party to pose as some sort of Party of the Working Class is a pathetic attempt to see if culture wars are powerful enough to trick working people into voting for a set of political goals that will keep them poor and make them die early. The ideal for these Republican politicians would be: no unions, more fossil fuels, and white workers lured by racism and xenophobia and scientific lies to vote against any sort of working class unity. The opposite ideal—the one that UAW is in the process of manifesting—is: strong unions, workers united, higher wages, and a Just Transition into a future of cleaner, greener jobs that will reduce pollution and inequality in one fell swoop. None of this, by the way, is an advertisement for the Democratic Party, which has a long history of being pathetic in its own ways. It is an advertisement for unions. Saving working people from poverty and saving working people from pollution and rising seas and cancer are all part of the job of saving working people. That is what unions do.

Uruguay imports its oil, so it had a problem. ... President Tabaré Vázquez was forced to buy energy from neighbouring states at higher prices. To escape the trap, Vázquez turned to an unlikely source: Ramón Méndez Galain, a physicist who would transform the country’s energy grid into one of the cleanest in the world. Today, the country has almost phased out fossil fuels in electricity production. Depending on the weather, anything between 90% and 95% of its power comes from renewables. In some years, that number has crept as high as 98%. Phasing out fossil fuels was a central issue at Cop28. After a week of tense negotiations in Dubai, countries agreed to transition away from fossil fuels within energy systems – but campaigners, governments and environmental experts continue to debate how to make that transition. One answer could lie in what Uruguay has achieved within a decade and a half. ...
The more Galain researched the issue, the more he became convinced ... that the country should go all in on wind power. Soon after, he received a phone call inviting him to become Uruguay’s energy secretary and to implement his plan. “Imagine my surprise,” Galain says. “This was crazy. But I did something even more crazy: I accepted.”

Just Transition
Tumblr media

JUST TRANSITION FOR AND FROM PEOPLES - Just transition is a concept constantly changing and genrating argument since its origin in unionism to this date. Numerous multilateral organisations have begun to employ it in a demagogic fashion, which hides false solutions or justifies the permanence of a development model leading to an unstoppable ecological collapse. This transition must not be confused with ‘the right to development’ or justified to avoid a profound transformation of a society and its economy.
From a climate justice view, a just transition must focus its attention on the discussion over, protection of and justice for the environment and communities and nations historically affected by violent politics of extractivist development. Just transition is the path to climb towards a profound systemic change for and from peoples and Nature.

Federal Government’s Inaction on Just Transition ‘Stealing Our Futures,’ Oil and Gas Worker Says

Natasha Bulowski writes: “... [A] government audit released ... found Ottawa is falling short on its commitment to support fossil fuel workers in the global shift to a low-carbon economy. If the federal government continues on its current trajectory, the audit revealed, 50 communities and more than 170,000 fossil fuel workers will be left behind in the energy transition. ... Despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2019 promise to create a Just Transition Act, the federal government has been ‘unprepared and slow off the mark,’ environment commissioner Jerry DeMarco told Canada’s National Observer ...”
“Last year, an Abacus Data poll commissioned by Iron & Earth surveyed 300 fossil fuel workers across Canada from May 24 to June 11. It found a majority of workers surveyed believe ‘Canada should pivot towards a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 to remain a competitive global economy.’ Ninety per cent of workers surveyed also believe they could transition to at least one type of net-zero technology with 12 months or less of training, according to the poll results. ‘Everybody working in oil and gas is extremely skilled … they are very knowledgeable,’ said [longtime oil and gas worker Stephen] Buhler. He wishes he could tell every oil and gas worker they are capable of working in green industries and that advocating for more green jobs will give both workers and the planet a more secure future.”

It's honestly crazy that discussion around testosterone HRT skews so much towards the beginning stages of it (to the point that you have dozens of guys thinking their transition is "failed" if they don't pass by like a year in lol) and what the initial changes of the first couple of months to years look like, like the classic laundry list of those early basic changes like bottom growth, voice drop, etc, when IMO literally none of that compares remotely to the depth and intensity of the long term total masculinization you start to experience like 3-5+ years in.

Rowling isn't denying holocaust. She just pointed out that burning of transgender health books is a lie as that form of cosmetic surgery didn't exist. But of course you knew that already, didn't you?
I was thinking I'd probably see one of you! You're wrong :) Let's review the history a bit, shall we?
In this case, what we're talking about is the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, or in English, The Institute of Sexology. This Institute was founded and headed by a gay Jewish sexologist named Magnus Hirschfeld. It was founded in July of 1919 as the first sexology research clinic in the world, and was run as a private, non-profit clinic. Hirschfeld and the researchers who worked there would give out consultations, medical advice, and even treatments for free to their poorer clientele, as well as give thousands of lectures and build a unique library full of books on gender, sexuality, and eroticism. Of course, being a gay man, Hirschfeld focused a lot on the gay community and proving that homosexuality was natural and could not be "cured".
Hirschfeld was unique in his time because he believed that nobody's gender was either one or the other. Rather, he contended that everyone is a mixture of both male and female, with every individual having their own unique mix of traits.
This leads into the Institute's work with transgender patients. Hirschfeld was actually the one to coin the term "transsexual" in 1923, though this word didn't become popular phrasing until 30 years later when Harry Benjamin began expanding his research (I'll just be shortening it to trans for this brief overview.) For the Institute, their revolutionary work with gay men eventually began to attract other members of the LGBTA+, including of course trans people.
Contrary to what Anon says, sex reassignment surgery was first tested in 1912. It'd already being used on humans throughout Europe during the 1920's by the time a doctor at the Institute named Ludwig Levy-Lenz began performing it on patients in 1931. Hirschfeld was at first opposed, but he came around quickly because it lowered the rate of suicide among their trans patients. Not only was reassignment performed at the Institute, but both facial feminization and facial masculization surgery were also done.
The Institute employed some of these patients, gave them therapy to help with other issues, even gave some of the mentioned surgeries for free to this who could not afford it! They spoke out on their behalf to the public, even getting Berlin police to help them create "transvestite passes" to allow people to dress however they wanted without the threat of being arrested. They worked together to fight the law, including trying to strike down Paragraph 175, which made it illegal to be homosexual. The picture below is from their holiday party, Magnus Hirschfeld being the gentleman on the right with the fabulous mustache. Many of the other people in this photo are transgender.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A black and white photo of a group of people. Some are smiling at the camera, others have serious expressions. Either way, they all seem to be happy. On the right side, an older gentleman in glasses- Magnus Hirschfeld- is sitting. He has short hair and a bushy mustache. He is resting one hand on the shoulder of the person in front of him. His other hand is being held by a person to his left. Another person to his right is holding his shoulder.]
There was always push back against the Institute, especially from conservatives who saw all of this as a bad thing. But conservatism can't stop progress without destroying it. They weren't willing to go that far for a good while. It all ended in March of 1933, when a new Chancellor was elected. The Nazis did not like homosexuals for several reasons. Chief among them, we break the boundaries of "normal" society. Shortly after the election, on May 6th, the book burnings began. The Jewish, gay, and obviously liberal Magnus Hirschfeld and his library of boundary-breaking literature was one of the very first targets. Thankfully, Hirschfeld was spared by virtue of being in Paris at the time (he would die in 1935, before the Nazis were able to invade France). His library wasn't so lucky.
This famous picture of the book burnings was taken after the Institute of Sexology had been raided. That's their books. Literature on so much about sexuality, eroticism, and gender, yes including their new work on trans people. This is the trans community's Alexandria. We're incredibly lucky that enough of it survived for Harry Benjamin and everyone who came after him was able to build on the Institute's work.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A black and white photo of the May Nazi book burning of the Institute of Sexology's library. A soldier, back facing the camera, is throwing a stack of books into the fire. In the background of the right side, a crowd is watching.]
As the Holocaust went on, the homosexuals of Germany became a targeted group. This did include transgender people, no matter what you say. To deny this reality is Holocaust denial. JK Rowling and everyone else who tries to pretend like this isn't reality is participating in that evil. You're agreeing with the Nazis.
But of course, you knew that already, didn't you?
Edit: Added image IDs. I apologize to those using screen readers for forgetting them. Please reblog this version instead.

The intersection of climate change and a just transition
Tumblr media
This week was what I would describe as a major moment of unity across the U.S., besides sporting events like the Super Bowl, holidays like Christmas and milestones like New Year's Eve there are few moments when the whole country has a common focus or goal. Well maybe elections but that can often be polarizing. The solar eclipse this week was a natural phenomena, a mix of science and wonder, even attributable to a higher power if you believe, and it got everyone to stop what they were doing and marvel at the moon passing in front of the sun for a short while. That being said, no one denied it was happening regardless of whether they had a scientific background or not, and everyone had access to it, but just needed to put on the protective glasses which people were able to get from everywhere, either for free or at a low cost. This experience made me think of what a just transition could look like.
Developing resilience amid increasing climate challenges is something we should all be unifying around, not just in the US but globally. In this week's class the speakers did a great job of demonstrating how a community-driven model for equitable resilience, including indigenous perspectives, community involvement in decisions, and sustainable approaches for a resilient future could make both climate action and a just transition a more attainable reality. The first speaker stressed the importance of indigenous insights in climate resilience, advocating for collaborative partnerships and equitable compensation. The second speaker discussed community-led solutions that illustrated how community engagement promotes sustainability and fairness in climate action.
Recently I was discussing with a colleague the IFC Performance Standards, which have a specific section on Indigenous Peoples as a consideration in Environmental and Social Impact Assessments for project finance. She was telling me about how the Dakota access pipeline conflict really opened her eyes to the general disregard of indigenous knowledge and voices in the present day (and historically) when it comes to avoiding destruction of nature and sacred sites. Subsequently, the discussion in class highlighted how integrating indigenous knowledge and community feedback into climate adaptation (and mitigation) plans can strengthen our collective capacity to endure and rebound from environmental risks. It is possible to safeguard livelihoods, while preserving ecosystems, and promoting solidarity and empowerment.
Circumventing the risks of exceeding planetary boundaries hinges on a sense of urgency, scientific insights and values, global collaboration, and a commitment to sustainable development. Climate action requires transitioning to renewable energy sources in a just way that does overburden any one group. It also requires adopting sustainable practices across sectors including nature-based solutions and broader biodiversity positive actions. Moreover countries need to recognize historical responsibilities and inequities between the global north and south. Above all, supporting vulnerable communities and countries disproportionately affected by climate change, is pivotal to a truly just transition.

A series of critical steps must be taken before we get to the level of mass direct action on an ongoing and consistent basis. We have to do a much more thorough job of getting people to understand the severity of the crisis and our collective ability to do something about it. We have to win over hearts and minds; and we have to defeat this notion that capitalism cannot be overcome. We must do more to convince people en masse that preserving life on this planet will require us to engage in an epic struggle against forces of reaction that are doing everything in their power to undermine our efforts and preserve the status quo - as we have seen over the last decades from the Movement for Justice for Oscar Grant, to Occupy, to the Movement for Black Lives, to Standing Rock.

People of Color in Climate Careers Image Generator
Something a little different today. Sharing an AI project I built yesterday. The original inspiration was I started creating these vision boards of people in climate careers. I wanted people to really see the future we were trying to create. I wanted people of color to see themseleves as part of the narrative of a just transition.
There can never be too many positive images of people of color in the world. Then I thought what if I built an application that allowed everyone to easily create images of the future we can build together. Thus was born the People of Color in Climate Image Generator.
This is still an early demo but I wanted to put it out in the world. Please check it out, create images, share with your friends. Below are some of the images that got created as I was building the application.

The Czech Republic to spend EU just transition money for ‘risky’ projects
The Czech Republic plans to allocate most of the EU’s Fair Transition Fund to large strategic projects that involve significant risks and have long been criticised, Euractiv reports.
Jan Kříž, Deputy Minister of Environment of the Czech Republic, made this statement. He added that in order to receive funding, projects must undergo a thorough approval procedure.
The Just Transition Fund was established as part of the multi-annual financing programme (MFF) for 2021-2027. The main aim of the fund is to support regions with heavy industry in their green transformation. The Czech Republic, with its three coal mining regions, will receive 1.7 billion euros.
The funds allocated by the EU must be spent in a short time – 70 per cent of the fund must be spent by the end of 2026. Due to the tight timeframe, the Moravian-Silesian region decided to spend about half of the allocated funds on large, so-called strategic projects. Kříž said:
Implementation is not easy because of strict rules. It is very ambitious to certify 70% of the EU money by the end of 2026. That is why we had to come up with, let’s say, an innovative way of implementation.

theres actually no rules to transitioning and youre allowed to want contradictory things for your transition. it's fine if you only want some of the changes that come with hrt and take preventative measures for the rest (like wanting bottom growth but not body hair or vice versa). you can want to have vagina AND a dick. you can be a woman and want top surgery, or wear a packer. you can be a man and want to have a pussy. you can change your transition goals one or a million times or not have any goals at all and just take things as they come or as they feel right.
there are no rules.
