Robson Square, Vancouver (No. 2)
The new development was completed between 1979 and 1983, encompassing three city blocks and providing 1,300,000 square feet (120,774 m2) of space. The main component is the glass-covered Law Courts, which houses 35 courtrooms in the southern block. It is 42 metres (138 ft) in height, and the glass roof has a size of 420 by 115 feet (128 by 35 m), is supported by a steel space frame structure, covering approximately 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of public space.
The central block contains provincial government offices and, more recently, portions of the University of British Columbia's downtown satellite campus, UBC Robson Square, housed in the lower level. Above, three cascading waterfalls throughout the complex provide natural air conditioning with 850,000 US gallons (3,218 m3; 707,773 imp gal) of water. An outdoor skating rink is located at the lower level that extends below Robson Street and connects to the northern block with the Vancouver Art Gallery, which was renovated as part of the project.

A group of migrants are refusing to leave an encampment in Denver until the city meets a list of 13 demands.
The demands were sent to Denver Mayor Mike Johnston following a petition by city officials to move the group from the encampment to indoor shelters funded by the city, local TV station KDVR reported. The encampment is under a bridge and near train tracks.
The group said if its demands are met, it will leave the encampment and move to a city shelter. The demands include providing "fresh" and "culturally appropriate" ingredients to cook with, shower access with no time limits, medical visits and housing support.
Newsweek has contacted via email the mayor's office for comment.
The group's complete demands are as follows:
The migrants should be allowed to "cook their own food with fresh, culturally appropriate ingredients," including rice, chicken, flour, tomatoes and onions, instead of being served premade meals. They also want to ensure people are not punished for bringing and eating food from outside the shelters.
Have access to showers at all times and without time limits.
Visits by medical professionals will occur on a regular basis, with referrals for specialty care made as needed.
The group will receive the same housing support offered to others, and city officials will not "kick people out in 30 days without something stable established."
A "clear" and "just" process for removing someone, including verbal, written and final warnings.
Employment support, including work permit applications for those who qualify.
Free consultations with an immigration lawyer, as well as ongoing legal support provided by the city through immigration clinics and transportation to court.
Privacy for families in the shelter.
No verbal, physical or mental abuse by shelter staff and no 24/7 monitoring by law enforcement.
Transportation for children to and from school.
No separation of families, regardless of whether those families have children.
A meeting with the mayor and those involved in running the city's program to support migrants "to discuss further improvements."
All shelter residents will be provided with a document signed by a city official in English and Spanish and containing the list of demands and a number to call to report violations.
Jon Ewing, a spokesman for Denver Human Services, told KDVR that the city is "just trying to get families to leave that camp and come inside."
The city's offer will give families "three square meals a day," and they can cook their own meals if they wish, he said. He also said that the city will try to compromise and determine what assistance the migrants qualify for.
"What might be something that is a feasible path for you to success that is not staying on the streets of Denver?" he said. "We try to figure something out.... At the end of the day, what we do not want is families on the streets of Denver."
Denver is among the U.S. cities that have struggled to manage the rising number of migrants that have been transported from Texas and other states. Last month, Johnston announced the creation of the Denver Asylum Seekers Program, which his office billed as a sustainable response to the city's migrant crisis.
The program will place asylum seekers in apartments for up to six months and provide job and skills training, food assistance and free legal help with asylum applications.
However, the program is limited to those who were in the city's shelters on April 10 and capped at about 1,000 people. Those who arrived in Denver after April 10 will be provided with a short-term stay at a shelter and assistance with onward travel.
Nonprofits are also working to support migrants arriving in Denver and other parts of Colorado. One organization, Hope Has No Borders, is working to pair migrants with host families for short or longer-term stays in Denver and other parts of Colorado.

Harley-Foerster primer
Making my case for why you should ship these two rookies
Tyson Foerster
He’s a rookie on the Flyers with really excellent advanced stats, whatever that means. He had a slow start to his season, but he stayed positive, and he recently hit his stride. Lately he’s been scoring a ton of goals:
youtube
All of his cellies are just him flinging his arms up in the air in pure joy. He is almost always smiling.
Tumblr media
He cares about his teammates and doesn't like beating them even in pointless competitions.
Tumblr media
In this clip, Tyson wins a meaningless accuracy shooting competition against Cam York and a few other Flyers. When asked how it feels, Tyson answers "not good, he's my teammate." We love a professional athlete who just wants to have fun with the boys.
When he isn't smiling, he's extremely expressive:
Tumblr media
He has a well-documented history of frolicking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also one time he dressed up as a playboy bunny. How that alone has not yet launched 1000 fics, I do not know.
Tumblr media
So: Tyson Foerster is a sweet ball of sunshine and an A+ goal scorer, secure in himself and his masculinity.
Thomas Harley
From Syracuse NY, he’s the star (heh) rookie defenseman of the Dallas Stars.
Tumblr media
We love him because he's a total babe and also very good at hockey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was highlighted on the NHL Network for leap year as a player who's taken a bit leap forward.
drysdalc on Twitter created a dizzying fan edit of him scoring goals and running his hands through his hair, if you'd like further justification.
Personality-wise, The Athletic said the following:
"Harley has always been a soft-spoken individual, especially in front of the microphone. There’s a looser version of him, one who picks playful fights with Wyatt Johnston in practices and during warmups, as he did on Saturday. But the most impressive thing about Harley has always been his maturity."
Sometimes he looks a bit deer-in-the-headlights during interviews. In my opinion this only adds to his charm.
Tumblr media
Foerster/Harley
I hope I've convinced you that they're both at the very least plausibly nice boys. But why the two of them together?
I invite you to cast your thoughts back to September 27th, 2019. Harley is a recent draftee of the Dallas Stars. He played a few pre-season games, then was sent back to the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL.
He gets off the plane and immediately plays a game against the Oshawa Generals, which he loses 5-6. The very next day, he plays another game, this time against the Barrie Colts. Thomas's team loses again, 7-3.
That season, Tyson Foerster was playing on the Colts. In that 7-3 game, Tyson recorded 6 points, including 3 goals.
"Foerster put himself squarely on the draft map on a late September day against the Mississauga Steelheads. He recorded six points including a hat trick. Then he went on a crazy point streak recording points in 13 straight games which including six consecutive multi-point efforts." - The Athletic
See? Huge deal for Foerster, and he got there by absolutely grinding Thomas's team into the dirt.
Thomas responded aggressively the next time their teams played each other, on 12/20/2019. In that game, Harley recorded two points and two assists, and the Steelheads beat the Colts 8-2. They played a few more times, including an overtime win for the Colts and an 8-1 Steelheads win.
After that season, Harley and Foerster didn't face each other again, as they both spent time in the minors. But this year, they're full time with their respective clubs. The Flyers and Stars have played two games this year.
The first, on October 21st, 2023, went to overtime. The Stars won 4-5. Tyson got a couple of shots on goal but neither player was particularly decisive.
The teams faced each other again on January 18th, 2024, AKA Tyson's 22nd birthday. This time, to the shock of basically everyone, the Flyers beat the absolute shit out of the Stars—but it took them a little while to get there.
As the second period was winding down, the Flyers were only up by 1. The shots differential was dramatically worse, at one point  28–3 in favor of the Flyers.
In the final minute of the 2nd period, Thomas high-sticked Tyson in the face. Miraculously, the Flyers scored on the associated power play, and it only got worse from there. The final tally was 1-5 in favor of the Flyers. Arguably, the Harley/Foerster penalty was the beginning of the end.
To summarize:
9/27/19: Thomas Harley plays 5 pre-season games with the stars and gets sent down back to Mississauga  9/28/19: Foerster’s Colts win 7-3 against Harley’s Mississauga, Tyson Foerster gets 6 points including a hat trick  12/20/19: The Colts play Sauga again, Mississauga wins 8-2 and Thomas gets a hat trick  2023–2024: Thomas Harley and Tyson Foerster are finally up with their respective teams for the season.  10/21/2023: Harley and Foerster play their first game against each other in the NHL. Neither of them does anything particularly of note.  1/18/2024: Harley and Foerster play their second game against each other in the NHL. Thomas highsticks Tyson at the end of the 2nd, arguably costing the Stars the game. Oh, and it’s Tyson’s 22nd birthday.
In conclusion, you should ship them because:
sunshine-quiet is a fun pairing
their games against each other, while few, have a lot of drama
they're both very cute
edit 4/22/24: additional information has surfaced for me personally, which is that Tyson's roommate Joel Farabee is a longtime friend of Thomas Harley. This is very important and relevant information that everyone should know.

Robson Square, Vancouver (No. 3)
Typical of Erickson's designs, Robson Square is constructed primarily out of concrete, but softened by its environmental design. In addition to the water features are trees and other flora as well as gradually inclining stairs with an integrated ramp. The open design allows for relatively unobstructed natural light and fresh air, and the waterfalls divert from the noise of downtown traffic. Landscaping on the project was designed by Cornelia Oberlander.
This public square has been highly utilized due to its successful design. As referenced by William H. Whyte, plazas need specific elements to unlock the potential of an area for proper utilization and enjoyment. The Robson Square experience is considered successful, from a designer's point of view, because it follows Whyte's Street Life Project guidelines. The complex was completed in three stages at a cost of $139 million. The provincial government offices were finished first in 1978, the Law Courts the following year, and the renovation of the old provincial court building into the new Vancouver Art Gallery was completed in 1983, a decade after the design was started.
As of November 23, 2009, Robson Square has been reopened following a multimillion-dollar reconstruction project. Its reopening can be directly attributed to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler. Robson Square provides the only public outdoor skating rink in Vancouver—and is free to use.
The rink area is used in the milder months for various public events including Ballroom & Salsa dancing, and is also the hub for Vancouver's Street Dance community since the late 90s. As noted above, the skating rink is open in the winter; admission is free and skate rentals are $4.00.

Radiator Springs/Rusteze-Dinoco Racing Center/Fireball Beach/Thunder Hollow/Thomasville/Florida International Speedway (Cars)
Takes place after Cars 3.
It isn’t combat based. Missions include keeping up with McQueen’s top speed by racing down Radiator Springs’ main street, learning how to turn right to go left at Willy’s Butte, keeping up with Cruz’s top speed on Fireball Beach, avoiding pushy competitors with the Thunder Hollow challengers, and practicing with Cruz at Thomasville, culminating in the Piston Cup race at Florida International Speedway, where the objective is to win against Jackson Storm.
Sora enters the world as a custom-made sports coupe mixing a few real-life sports car models before visits to Luigi’s Casa Della Tires and Ramone’s House of Body Art end with him modified into a next-gen race car sponsored by Dinoco (with Tex’s blessing) and with Cruz’s number.
It’s set during Cruz’s first Piston Cup racing season, so McQueen still has Doc’s colors and spends the Florida race as Sora’s crew chief.
As Sora finishes his story, Mater is certainly unhappy with Xehanort’s actions forcing Sora’s hand. “That dad-gum Xehanort”, he says angrily. Extra points if Sora doesn’t get to the part where Xehanort is dead, then Sarge gets in his face and demands him to teach Xehanort a lesson when he gets back in a militaristic manner. “Is that understood,” Sarge yells. Then Sora tries to correct him, but gets cut off and asked again, “Is that understood,” and has to respond, “Sir, yes, sir!”
Of course, during the top speed races, Luigi is the one to signal the race to begin.
In the Radiator Springs race, Sora’s top speed is tracked by Sheriff’s speed radar, and on Fireball Beach, it’s via Cruz’s personal assistant, Hamilton.
If you fail the “Turn Right to go Left” mission, Sora goes flying into the bed of cacti, and Mater fishes him out.
I know I’ll get hate for this, but Cars 2 elements are here. Heck, maybe Mater can’t be present most for the training because he’s busy with Finn and Holley. After all, does he still owe Holley a first date?
I wanted the player character in this world to be Kairi just so Storm can feel the embarrassment of losing to not one, but two “costume girls”.
The Piston Cup race is announced as a 500-lap race, but no game developer is that malicious to force the player to race 500 laps around an oval, so they’d take after the first Cars game and make it twelve laps with the sun slowly lowering throughout the race.

“From the earliest period Medea is associated with a number of  gods. She is the granddaughter of Helios, the sun god, and is linked  to Hera and Aphrodite in Korinth (Plutarch, De Herod. malig. 871b). The link to Aphrodite is part of the story of her relationship with Jason, but the link to Hera goes far deeper. Hera’s sphere of influence, including marriage and childbirth, covers many of the same areas  as does Medea’s. We noted above that some have argued that Medea herself was originally part of Hera’s manifestations. Medea is also linked to early concepts of divinity expressed as the figures of Demeter/Hekate as mother or earth goddess, and the role of Hekate as moon goddess further links Medea to Artemis. In some variants Aietes receives an oracle which tells him that he will be killed by  a foreigner, and he appoints Medea as priestess of Artemis with  the task of killing foreigners, a motif we will return to in the next chapter. There is no single pattern for Medea’s place in the divine sphere, and artistic sources in the classical period do not stress her associations with the Olympian gods. The main narratives make Medea a powerful force in her own right. Indeed, Kovacs (1993) has shown how there is a striking lack of divine participation in Euripides’ play, and Medea herself claims to be acting as an agent of Zeus’ justice. As a figure who is never punished for acts which would normally be seen as criminal and/or sacrilegious, Medea seems to exist outside the boundaries of classical Greek religion.
Medea is, however, strongly linked to the figure of Hekate, a goddess who herself occupies an ambiguous position in Greek religion. Hekate appears to have originally been a multifaceted goddess whose darker, negative attributes were given greatest prominence. In the earliest literary reference, Hesiod’s Theogony 404–52, she is praised for her gifts, and called a protectress of the young. Other features associate her with weddings, horsemanship and competitions. Johnston (1999, 205–11) argues that Hekate was originally a goddess in Caria, where she guarded cities, and her sphere of influence became doorways and transitions, extending to a wider cosmic role. Other scholars have linked Hekate to early figures of a mother goddess, or an earth goddess. In classical and later traditions Hekate is associated with mortal crossings, both birth and death, and becomes a darker figure linked to magic and the dead. In Ovid’s Metamorphoses (7. 234 ff.) Medea prays to Hekate and ‘Youth’ to release spirits of the dead. The internal story of Hekate within Greek mythology develops to associate her with the older, chthonic, deities who are often presented in opposition to the newer Olympian gods. The conflict between the older gods and the newer Olympian deities was the subject of the myth of the Gigantomachy, and a later aftershock is shown in Aeschylus’ play Eumenides, where old and new forms of justice/vengeance  come into conflict. In Valerius Flaccus’ account of Jason’s capture  of the Golden Fleece, Medea is positioned squarely at that intersection between Hekate and the Olympian gods, as Hekate is sad to see Medea leave, and Venus boasts that Hekate is no match for her powers: Hecate’s dismal powers are nothing for us to fear: let her appear or attempt to interfere with our purpose, and even she will feel pangs of passion stir for the Argo’s captain to whom we give aid. (Valerius Flaccus, Argonautica 7. 202–4, trans. Slavitt, 1999)”

Just Dumb Enough to Try
Chapter 3: Bored in the USA
Pairing: Javier Peña x F!Reader
Rating: Explicit (18+ only)
Warnings: This chapter has a lot of angst, pregnancy mention, swearing, smoking, alcohol use, cannabis use, family of origin problems
Tumblr media
Summary: In 1993, you met Javier Peña in San Antonio. You made an emotional and physical connection with him. Now it's 1998 and you're starting a new chapter of life in Laredo with your fiancé. And who else walks back into the picture, but the man who left you high and dry five years ago.
Notes: We don't see a lot of Javi this chapter, mostly in passing, but reader/you is/are working through your feelings on what happened in the first two chapters. I'm using the gif above because look at that smiiiile- so beautiful! Music is a big inspiration in writing this, so I'm making a Spotify playlist for each chapter. Playlist for this chapter. I really wanted to make something where Javi can be soft, vulnerable, goofy, etc. Because CUTE. I've written a few chapters ahead and cross-posted on AO3 here.
Ch 1 : Ch 2
Heights Elementary School, Laredo, TX
May 15, 1998
I don’t want to do this. This is a mistake.
You ignore the voice inside your head, as well as that feeling in your gut, and slide the resignation letter into Superintendent Johnston’s mail slot. Now it’s done. The two weeks notice is out of your hands.
Fuck.
You turn and leave the office, giving a plastic smile and wave to the elderly secretary sitting at her desk, “Bye, Carol! Have a good weekend.”
She waves in response without looking at you.
Echos of your loafers hitting the tile floor ricochet down the empty school hallway. You turn to exit the building near the staff parking lot. As soon as you open the door to get outside, the Texas heat slaps you in the face.
It’s like walking into a heat lamp.
You’re thankful you opted for the sundress to work today, otherwise you would’ve been sweating all day. The lot is empty, save for your black 1994 Volvo 850 Wagon and Carol’s car. You spent an hour writing up your resignation letter, then another hour having a moral dilemma about whether or not to actually turn it in. When you get in your car, it’s so fucking hot you want to puke. Once you start the engine, you roll the driver and passenger side windows down to let some of the heat out while the A/C kicks into gear. You pluck a cigarette out of the pack in your cup holder. After lighting the cigarette, you take a deep drag, groaning through the exhale when you remember that Dan is taking you to the Pour House right when you get home.
Maybe I can just stay in this car forever instead.
You shake the temptation out of your brain and shift the car into drive.
The car keys land on the black console table with a jingle within seconds of you walking in the front door. You kick off your shoes, make your way over to a central air conditioning vent, and close your eyes. The icy cold air blows onto your face and you feel a hint of comfort for the first time today. Dan spots you when he comes into the living room.
“Are you ready to go?” He inquires.
You shake your head and sigh, “Give me five minutes, I need to change.”
You reluctantly open your eyes, then walk past him down the hallway into your bedroom. It’s a square room, two large windows opposite the entry door, walls painted a deep emerald green, floor covered in a cream colored carpet. The sheets, pillow cases, and comforter on your king size sleigh bed are white. Your bed frame is a dark walnut; you have side table drawers, a chest of drawers and vanity table with the same finish. There’s a lush vine plant hanging in front of one of the windows that has crept its way around the wall. You drag yourself over to the walk-in closet.
Once inside, you yank your sundress off over your head and slide a shorter, more breathable black dress on in its place. You review your choice in the mirror. It is quite short, like you may not want to bend over at the waist unless you want to moon everyone, but it shows off your thick thighs, which you adore. After exiting the closet, you take two steps over to plop down in the vanity seat. Despite the fact that you did, in fact, cry for at least one cumulative hour today, your eyes are surprisingly not bloodshot or puffy.
A goddamn miracle.
You quickly refresh your makeup, applying concealer, blush, mascara, and a dark pink lipstick. When you re-emerge in the living room, Dan’s tall frame is leaning up against the front door. He is crossing his arms, one hand wrapped around his car keys, tapping his nike tennis shoe to the linoleum impatiently. He glances up through his blonde curtain bangs when he hears your bare feet padding down the wood flooring in the hallway. His ocean blue eyes wander up and down your frame and he smiles warmly at you, but the words that come out don’t match the warmth, “Are you sure you want to wear that? It’s really short.”
You nod and respond curtly, “Yeah well I’ve been sweating my ass off all day and you’re already getting impatient with how long I’m taking.”
He shrugs, pushes himself off the door, and then opens it for you to walk out first.
Ever the gentleman.
During the two minute drive to the bar, you tell him you turned in your resignation letter.
“Good. Are you excited?” He asks, eyes not leaving the road.
“I don’t know,” you answer honestly, “It’s nice that you’re making enough money now that I don’t have to work, but I really love my job.”
He grimaces, “We’ve been over this before. It’s pointless to work at that job when you don’t have to. It makes more sense to have you at home taking care of the house and wedding planning, remember?”
You have had this conversation with him dozens of times. It was pointless having it again. You sigh, “You’re right.”
He pulls into a spot in front of the Pour House and puts the car in park.
—
“- my momma has been a homemaker since she was 25, never regretted it once.” Dan takes a swig out of his beer bottle and continues, “Besides, after we get married, we’re having kids straight away. Wedding planning, making babies, taking care of babies- she’ll be able to keep busy!” He explains to his friend, Greg. Greg nods his head and looks from Dan to you. You shrug and give a half-assed smile.
Your inner rebel girl dies a little and you take a sip of your beer in memory of her. You love Dan, and you know this is the right move for your future together. It just stings a little right now because you always saw yourself being an elementary school teacher. It’s the one of the few things in your life that has felt earned and meaningful.
But, you rationalize with yourself, I will have my own kids someday. It will be fine. This feeling will pass, just like Dan said, I’ll be able to keep busy.
“Hey, man, it was good talking with you. I actually have to go over to Chucho’s house. Javi is back in town, so Chucho is throwing a welcome back party for him,” Greg tells Dan. He throws a $20 bill on the bar.
Javi
Your pulse quickens as you recall the Javier you met back in 1993. There’s no way in hell it’s the same person, but his handsome face flashes in your mind’s eye anyway.
“No shit? Hey, tell Javi welcome back for me, will ya? We’ll see y’all at church on Sunday,” Dan bids farewell.
Greg tips his cowboy hat to you and Dan in departure and you wave goodbye to him.
Javi
Your skin tingles in all the places Javier touched you. You almost let out a small moan when you think about how hard you came with him. Hands down, best sex you ever had.
Dan turns to you and plants a kiss on your cheek, finally acknowledging your presence after talking to Greg directly for an hour. You smile weakly at him. The day has been emotionally exhausting and you just want to go home.
“You ready to split?” he asks, then finishes his beer and gets his wallet out to settle the tab.
Thank fucking god.
“I’m ready when you are.”
That night while in bed, you toss and turn thinking about Javier. Wouldn’t that be wild if it was your Javi that Greg was talking about? There’s absolutely no way, but what if?
You love Dan, and the sex is fine, but the doesn’t hold a candle to that night with Javier. In the safety of your bed in the dark, Dan snoring beside you, you allow yourself to access the thoughts that make your chest feel hollow.
He occupies your mind more often than you would ever admit. You think about the two of you sprawled out on that ratty couch, post-orgasm glow radiating off of you, when Michelle caught you two and freaked the fuck out. She chased him out of the apartment with no shirt on at 2am and screamed at you until you cried and locked yourself in your bedroom. She stopped speaking to you from that moment forward. Javier evaporated into thin air, never to be seen again. And, ultimately, you had a mental breakdown due to the incident in its entirety. It’s a very sensitive time that you’ve detailed to your best friend Claudia, and your therapist, but nobody else.
It’s sort of bittersweet, because if that night hadn’t happened, you wouldn’t have met Dan. You started going to therapy, and your therapist recommended you join a sport to make friends. You’re the least sporty person in the world but you tried anyway, just trying to find any sort of community. You found an adult softball league that met every Wednesday, and hated almost every single second of it. But on your team was this tall, handsome, sporty dude who was actually kind of charming, and into you (Dan, obviously).
You hit it off (sports pun) right away. He has lived in Laredo his whole life, except when he was going to college in Dallas. His family, the Bakers, are one of the most prominent families in the town. Dan is an engineer, just like his father, and helps run the family business, a lucrative computer hardware company. He’s outgoing, active, and successful. You moved in with him when you graduated, then got a teaching job at Heights Elementary.
It all fell into place like it was meant to be. You were seeking community, you found something else: a family.
Sure, you have a family in the sense that you have a mom, dad, stepmom, brothers, extended family… but you are essentially estranged from all of them. You talk to your grandma the most, and she’s hanging onto life by a thread. Claudia is the closest thing you have to a family. You’ve known each other for almost your whole life, spend holidays visiting each other, you’re her son's godmother, so on and so forth. Effectively family, but it’s not the same.
Dan is incredibly family-orientated. You love that about him. Every Sunday, his whole family attends church and then goes out to lunch together. They celebrate every birthday, go on an annual vacation together, and all live in Laredo. You feel blessed to be accepted by the Bakers.
That being said, you know that you and Dan aren’t the most compatible people. But you know you can build a beautiful and comfortable life together regardless. You know he won’t leave you, he will be a provider, and he will give you children. You suppose those are the reasons he wants to marry you. It might not be the dream you had for yourself, but it’s also not the worst place you could have ended up in life.
Your mind briefly floats back to Javier and wonders what would have happened if he had knocked you up. You think about it from time-to-time, a fucked up part of you wishing it would have happened. Maybe you would have had motivation to seek him out then. You wonder if he ever thinks about you, but you doubt it. If he had given a single fuck about you, he wouldn’t have completely ghosted you.
And that’s probably what fucks with your head the most. Almost five years later, you were still laying in bed next to your fiancé,  thinking about Javier… and he probably doesn’t even remember you.
The next day, you take a morning walk to check the mail and get a few groceries. As you do on your morning walks, you smoked a joint while you walked through the park on your way. Since Laredo is such a small town, you can pretty much walk anywhere within city limits. The “downtown” area is only a few city blocks, so it’s pretty easy to run basic errands on foot.
You’re mostly in your own head daydreaming when you approach the post office. There’s a man exiting, looking down at the mail in his hands. Being the nice broad you are, you hold the door open for him. Being high as fuck, you don’t make eye contact with this person. He mumbles a thank you as he walks past. While you’re fishing your PO Box keys out of your pocket, you’re trying to place what that man smelled like. It’s musky, a certain type of cologne, cigarettes… like a word on the tip of your tongue, it’s bothering you.
After confirming there’s no new mail in your PO Box, you walk down the block to the grocery store. Almost immediately when you enter the grocery store, you forget what you’re there to get. And did you write a list? Of course not. So you grab a basket and start walking up and down the aisles, grabbing whatever sounds good.
It crosses your mind that Dan is thinking you will make a wonderful homemaker and the thought makes you laugh out loud. You’re a 32-year-old woman, stoned as hell in a grocery store, no idea what you’re doing. Not to mention your organization style can be mostly described as chaos. Sometimes you think he doesn’t even know who you are.
You throw a bag of salt and vinegar chips in your basket and review its contents. Hot dogs, buns, chips… that’s good enough, right? You shrug to yourself and head for the checkout line. It’s a small grocery store so there are a total of three checkout lines; usually only one is open. You set your basket on the checkout conveyor belt, then throw a butterfinger in there as a treat for the walk home.
The person in line behind you starts unloading their basket as you hand the cashier money to pay for your groceries.
There’s that fucking smell again. It smells so good.
You figure it’s the guy from the post office, so you look up at him just for a split second to see if that will help you figure out the mystery. You’re sure it’s just a cologne someone you know wears. You only see the back of him, but he’s a moderately tan-skinned man (maybe Hispanic?) with short chestnut brown hair, a brown leather jacket, tight jeans, and work boots. It doesn’t ring any bells. The cashier hands you your change and you go on your way.
You stop in the park on your way back home, just to hang out. It’s cooler than it was yesterday, thankfully. You find a picnic table and sit down on it while unwrapping your butterfinger. You think about what you’re going to do with the rest of your day. Probably try to lay in your hammock and read. Maybe go get a drink with Kim later. You’re enjoying your candy bar when it hits you like a slap in the face.
That smell was Javier.
You stop chewing as a full on panic spreads across your chest. You reason with yourself, it’s probably a man that wears the same cologne he did.
But it looked like him from behind.
There are so many guys that look similar to Javi from behind around here. You (mostly) convince yourself that you’re panicking for no reason.
The next morning, you’re sitting in the church lobby, zoning out like you do every Sunday morning here. There’s so much noise echoing off the walls from post-church service chatter, you are unable to concentrate on any one particular thing anyone is saying. The Bakers know this isn’t really your favorite “scene” so to speak, so they don’t give you too much shit when you inevitably exit the building to go smoke cigarettes outside while Cheryl finishes up chit-chatting with the other churchgoers.
You put on your sunglasses as you meander over to the smoking area. These people are chit-chatting, too, naturally, but it’s not as noisy. You light up a smoke and take a drag, then take a look around at the people scattered around. There’s a clique of 5-6 people standing in a circle, smoking and talking loudly. You walked a little closer just so you could eavesdrop.
“- So are you staying with Chucho now that you’re home?” a middle-aged white man wearing a blue suit with a receding hairline asks.
“Yeah I’m helping him with work around the ranch,” comes the reply. You take a drag off your cigarette, flick your glance to the speaker, and your stomach drops like a rock. He’s wearing a tan suit, light blue striped tie, and sunglasses. Hair a little longer than the last time you saw him almost five years ago. Dashingly handsome, looking absolutely miserable with the cigarette-break-turned-press-conference.
Javi. Of fucking course it’s him.

How Tedious It Is to Be Surrounded by Fools
Teaser: “Perhaps she does not realize how thoroughly beaten they are at this game. But it will surely be amusing to watch them play. And since pain doesn’t seem to work on the little demon prince, I wish to know what will drive him to spill his secrets in the end.”
Hatchett
I am utterly dumbfounded when Michaelson informs me what our intrepid IA thieves have been up to.
“You’re…being truthful?” I peer down at Michaelson, doubt pricking at my insides. My junior is good at keeping prisoners in line, which is one thing his nasty streak is good for, but I wouldn’t put it past him to contrive some sort of dramatics in order to justify more punishment. I have a sneaking suspicion that if he didn’t wear the uniform, our relationship might be something very different.
However, he is insistent that it all happened as he says it did. “Ask Lenton. She picked it right off him. He didn’t even notice.”
Good god. Stealing right off his belt? I pinch the bridge of my nose, trying not to let my frustration show. Four years on the streets, or wherever she crawled off to the night she left, have turned Miss Breanna Cooper into more of a wild animal than I realized.
“With all due respect, sir…”
Never a good thing to hear from one’s subordinate. But I nod, giving him leave to speak his mind. “What is it you wish to say?”
“Sir, I do mean this respectfully, but is it…wise…to keep them so close to one another? To let them talk?”
Retsing my hands on my desk, I meet his eyes squarely. “What are you afraid will happen, Officer Michaelson?” His is a valid question, of course, but still I must suppress a wave of irritation. Brutes like him, they have no vision. It has not occurred to him, clearly, that there might be a reason for holding the thieves together.
“Well, the girl’s only just been brought in, and she was bold enough to take the flask right off Lenton’s person—”
Bold enough indeed. “I am learning rather quickly,” I cut in, “that Breanna Cooper is capable of churning up mayhem wherever she goes. Isolating her from the boy will do little to change that.” I raise my eyebrows. “Did you not say it yourself that you believe the girl acted of her own free will?”
“Well, it sure seemed like he was trying to cover for her. To be heroic.”  He sneers the last word, but still Michaelson is unsure. “Won’t they cause more trouble together?”
Oh, that is perhaps so. In fact, I am counting on it. “We ensured at the whipping post that the fox-thief can’t do much of anything right now.” A smirk rises to Michaelson’s face at the reminder. “And, I must confess, I am interested to see if a change in tactics will help to loosen that dirty tongue of his.”
Michaelson, bless him, is a good constable, but he doesn’t carry much between his ears. “Sir?”
“Sweet little Breanna showed us her hand immediately,” I say, thinking of the shrill gasp she let slip when she set eyes on the thief, the frantic pitch of her voice as she begged for us to stop his punishment.
It was not only she, though, who laid bare a weakness for us to see. Though the fox-thief surely didn’t even know it at the time, he also unwittingly gave up his.
The Johnston boy, that other thief we caught, the one who was hanged—there was nothing between him and “Fox,” and still the thief-prince wept to see him hang.
Not many brains inside that ruddy head of his, but in his chest beats a pathetic, bleeding heart.
But these two…they know one another. “Perhaps she does not realize how thoroughly beaten they are at this game. But it will surely be amusing to watch them play. And since pain doesn’t seem to work on the little demon prince, I wish to know what will drive him to spill his secrets in the end.”
I suspect my junior still does not understand. No matter. It is I who is in charge. “Thank you for the update, Michaelson.”
He nods, at least catching that he is now dismissed, and disappears.
~~~
The scene is as Michaelson described: young Miss Cooper remains in the cell next to the boy’s, but she is curled dejectedly at the back wall, a manacle around one wrist.
“You couldn’t even go a single day without causing a fuss?” I glare down at her from outside the bars. “Did you actually believe you’d get away with stealing inside here? Off his belt? Are you daft?”
She fixes me with a burning stare, but she says nothing.
“You won’t speak? Learned your lesson, then, have you, about back-talking your betters?”
Her face tightens, twists into something savage and hideous, before she calms her features again. “What do you want?”
“And now you are angry,” I go on, ignoring the question, “because someone is finally doling out consequences for your severely questionable choices.”
Still, Breanna does not move. What can she say to argue? All I said is true. She opens her mouth, clearly about to try, but another voice speaks first.
“Leave her alone.”
Prickles of heat sweep through my body. Oh, how I love it when the thief dares to give me orders. “What was that, boy?”
“I said, leave her alone.” The boy shifts, rattling the chains on his legs. “Did you just come here to gloat?”
“You have quite some nerve, telling me what to do.” The torchlight casts shaky, bar-shaped shadows across his pitiful face. He is looking at me, but he remains still, hunched in what must be quite a lot of pain. Pathetic.
“Your junior already did enough,” he says.
“Fox.” Breanna’s voice is quiet. Brimming with warning. She may have made a dire miscalculation in this ridiculous water-flask debacle, but it seems she has more sense between the two of them.
A fact that is demonstrated when the boy plunges ahead with ordering me around. “Have someone bring her more water,” the thief says. “She hasn’t had any in—”
“The way I hear it,” I cut in, shaking my head, “you both should have had plenty of that very thing.”
“Well, we didn’t.” The boy straightens slightly, eliciting a wince. I wonder what, then, they used the water for. Or whether they’re simply lying. Still, it’s refreshing to see him pretending to be human for a few minutes, talking like someone of value instead of roaring and cursing like a beast. “And he knocked over her cup. She hasn’t had a drink in hours. You can’t deny her water.”
I don’t move. “As you well know, fox-thief, I can do as I wish.” A glance at Breanna tells me she is glaring at both of us. “And interestingly enough, as I listened to your request, I did not hear the word please. If you truly wanted me to take this matter seriously, you might at least pretend to be civilized for a few precious minutes.”
What I wouldn’t give to have that look immortalized in stone—the wide-eyed, grudging acceptance that I will not consider doing what he wants unless he shows the respect he’s been so resolutely denying me until now.
“Fox.”
She will tell him to leave the matter alone, to disobey. It is all too clear what manner of woman she has become in recent years. She may have been a gentle girl who knew her place once upon a time, but that time is long gone.
“Please, Constable Hatchett.” The sound of those words, even spat unwillingly through gritted teeth, is a thing of beauty. “Won’t you bring more water?”
It is tempting, very tempting indeed, to remain still, to wait for more, to really make him grovel, and maybe her too, but I can accept a victory with grace. As I walk away, I pause again by Breanna’s cell. “You cannot even make requests on your own behalf, Miss Cooper? Letting the boy take your blame earlier, now having him beg for you?”
She sits up suddenly enough, cracking her chain against the wall, that I know I’ve struck a nerve. “That’s not—”
“You’re even more of a faithless minx than I thought.”
She stares at me wildly for a few moments, as if she cannot decide how to proceed from here.
“Take this off.” She raises her shackled wrist. “It’s pointless. I can’t go anywhere.”
I can’t help it—I laugh. “You think I’m going to do that?”
“Please.”
Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. “No one’s worried about you going anywhere, Miss Cooper. I think they’re worried about your little thieving fingers going where they don’t belong.” Looking at her, at the both of them, makes me sick. “You really believe you’re somehow above the rules, don’t you?”
“It’s not that.”
Bullshit. “Then what is it?”
Even in the dim light, I can see the way she sets her jaw. Stubborn little bitch.
“You need to send the medic to do his job,” she says. Quiet now. As if being demure will somehow sway me to her cause.
I’m about to ask why when I glance over at the boy in the cell next to her. Ah. For him.
“Now you’re giving me orders, too, Miss Cooper? How very bold you’ve become.”
“Please—”
“I’ll think about it.” Before she can say anything else to piss me off, I walk away.
I bark a set of orders at the first junior I see. “Bring water to the IA girl. Breanna Cooper. Make sure she can reach it.” He scurries off with only a nod, perhaps seeing the look on my face and understanding that insubordination and stupidity will not be tolerated in my prison.
Which means I will need to speak with my juniors. Fear and pain—torturing the thief, forcing Breanna to count each strike—are good for loosening a prisoner’s tongue, and consequences—whipping him for his escape attempt, restraining her to prevent any more attempts at thievery—are necessary in an institution such as this. But denying her water… As much as I hate to admit it, the boy is right. I want her alive. Both of them.
Neither of them can be permitted to die until every last drop of usefulness has been wrung dry.
The Last Chapter
So I went trough Smith's bio of The Soldier and inevitably arrived to the last chapter. You know, the one with dreadful revelations. The author is beating around the bush, I will not. Let's state aloud and clear that Smith claims Lawrence Oates raped eleven years old girl in summer of 1899. I find it gross to the point of nausea that the author calls it „a brief liaison” and „a romance”.
One might think that when you sling such serious accusations, you should provide some really solid evidence to support them. Well, no. The last chapter provides as much sources as a gossip column, that means none. But let's analyse things a bit deeper.
The girl was named Henrietta McKendrick, born in Johnstone, and indeed such a person did exist, I checked in Scottish birth registers. Census data though shows that the very same Henrietta McKendrick still lived in Johnstone in 1901, a year after the alleged child was born and six years after she allegedly left her hometown for good.
The details of how Oates and his supposed victim crossed paths are, well, non-existent. We are told to believe that they did, without any explanation where and in what circumstances. Heck, we don't even know where Henrietta lived at that time.
Equally hazy are the circumstances of the child's birth, which was supposed to happen somewhere in Ireland in 1900, but we shouldn't search for the birth certificate because it probably does not exist due to secrecy. That is such an idiotic claim that it made my jaw drop, because, you know, registering births has been mandatory in good ole UK (which Ireland was a part of in 1900) since like 1875 if memory serves me well, any way it was already mandatory in 1900. If secrecy demanded hiding the father's name, the solution was delightfully simple: the space for said name was left blank, or unlucky mother just invented something on the spot. So these claims by Smith have more than a whiff of a horseshit, to use terminology no doubt close to Soldier's heart.
The child was named Kathleen Gray and handed to Blanche Wright and Ellen B. Kingsford who ran a house for out of wedlock kids. Both ladies existed and indeed run such a house, so at least something checks up. I wasn't able to dig up much about Kathleen and her children, John and Gillian (maybe my record-fu got a tad rusty). One curious tidbit is though that Henrietta somehow „had overcome her early motherhood” and married certain Anthony Cooper in 1918. I mean the girl was twelve, TWELVE! when she gave birth, her father was already in grave, but we are told to believe she just somehow „had overcome” it. What was she doing after leaving the child in the orphanage, how did she support herself, how did she bounce from being in deep troubles ad bad material situation, to becoming well off woman and a doctor's wife? No word of explanation, dear readers just believe when autor says she had overcome it. Can you smell horseshit? Because I can.
Another quite funny tidbit is a memory of Gillian who, with her mother and brother John, went to see”Scott of the Anctarctic” in London's Odeon at Leicester square. According to that memory in the foyer they saf the life sized cardboard cutouts and got shocked at striking likeness of the brother with Oates. Well, I searched the et up and down, examined photos, watched the clips and haven't spotted even a single cardboard cutout in that foyer. There were the posters on the wall, sure, but the faces on them belonged to the actors from the aforementioned movie. So Gillian, it seems, got shocked over Derek Bond, who indeed is very much a look alike for the chap from the picture allegedly depicting John, much more than Lawrence Oates.
Overall, that last chapter, devoid of any serious sources, reads more like a tabloid than a part of serious biographical book and I am seriously surprised Smith decided to put such undocumented pile of crap in this, otherwise quite valuable, book. Especially that the allegiations contained in it are very, very heavy and Lawrence Oates, being dead for over a century, cannot defend himself. It certainly stings when I see that uproven claptrap even in The Soldier's Wikipedia article. Shame on you, Michael Smith.
