gratitude list time I'll go first

#stopped caring about some things I was caring far too much about #it's another rainy dreary day which means I can wear cozy clothes and curl up with my brother's dog and coffee and a book #little guy and I are just chillin. he's tiny and shorthaired so he gets cold easily and likes to cuddle up #and seeing as I'm the only person home rn... doggo cuddle time it is!!! #I've been reading more lately!! I'm having trouble with tbosas so I got out a couple other things (sea of tranquility included) #that I've really enjoyed. I'm reading turtles all the way down right now and oh boy I forgot how nice a little contemporary #coming of age novel can be at times. also forgot that john green is a genuinely good writer. as in I personally enjoy his style. #let's see... my favorite sound guy for church is home from college for the summer which means THERES SOMEONE HERE #WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS HOW THE SOUND SYSTEM WORKS. me and the other sound guys have been barely #managing the last couple months bc there's been a ton of random technical glitches (the system is pretty old tbh) #so HALLELUJAH THE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT TO DO IS BACK!!!! #I've been branching out into a bunch of things I wouldn't have thought to enjoy lately bc of the time I've been spending #with my sister in law. music and tv shows and even foods and stuff!!! #Gurt is coming to visit me in a week and a day!!!!!! Sometimes I'm like "am I reading too into the subtext? Am I seeing incest horror implications where none actually are?" When I think about John and Dean in Devil's Trap, or the way the shifter approached and talked to Sam in Skin, or Playthings, or Henriksen's comments, or (or, or, or).

And then I remember Bela's canon backstory.

And then I remember that canon had Mary kiss her possessed father, had it show us how isolating her life was and how controlling her father was, including over her relationship.

And a few episodes later canon had Samhain possess the body of one of the witch siblings who raised him and the first thing he did was kiss the vessel's sister, all while she's reciprocating this and seemingly delighted.

And a few episodes after that, we got a soon-to-be-dead one off side character introduce a sex worker as his sister for absolutely zero reason, followed shortly by whatever the hell this was

And yeah, no, a lot of it was definitely on purpose. Zachariah even told us flat out, these boys are psychotically irrationally erotically.

#there are just.... so many examples of textual incest in this show #particularly the kripke era #when i think about kripke having (apparently) wanted to make jo actually be John's kid? i scream #plus so many examples i didn't even list #everything from Meg and Meg!sam to the creepy overtones in The Benders #sam being 'made unclean' so young in life by a home intruder #it's all so horrifying #subtext #full house of wincest #this haunting is architectural #you can never go home #it's also wild that the show eventually transforms the transgressive incest subtext #into a messy relationship with infidelity and recommitment that gives way to an implied wedding #and ultimately a stable marriage of sorts that circles back in the end to establishing this huge messy thing between them as good and right #as redeeming #but anyway

we all know dean wears john’s jacket after he takes it from his hotel room in the pilot. but i completely forgot we also see him wear it to school in the flashback episode in s4, where he’s fronting like mad and feeling like just as much of an outsider as sam

which means he’s always used it as a comfort item. which means john let him wear it and knew, at least on some level, that it helped him. he let him wear it enough that dean doesn’t hesitate to grab it in the pilot when he needs the comfort

but more importantly, john leaves it behind for dean to find

he could’ve taken it with him when he dropped the woman in white hunt (he takes all his other gear, weapons and clothes), but he leaves it on the coat rack where dean could easily find it. he knew he’d be gone for a long time, if not outright suspecting that he’d die going after the yellow-eyed demon, and he deliberately leaves the jacket behind for dean to find comfort in

#john winchester letting dean have a comfort item like that is breaking both my heart and my brain #like my instinct is that its out of character but then i think of how he gives him the impala #he doesnt have the same attachment to it as dean does #dean sees it as a home while john just sees it as a cool car #i think he thinks dean sees it the same way he does which is why he pokes him about it #‘hey dean why dont you touch up your car before you get rust. i would have given you the damn thing if i thought you were going to ruin it’ #meanwhile we all know just how much he loves and cares for the impala #its not like dean would or could verbalise what it means to him #but he never asks for the jacket back #he never makes a comment about dean wearing it #hes never even surprised that he has it #more to the point #he leaves it behind for dean to find #which means he without a doubt knows dean finds comfort in it #and not only allows it but boderline encourages it #which is a level of emotional intelligence i would never expect from john wonchester #carry on my wayward son #coming out of my cage and i’ve been doing just fine.txt #supernatural #spn #dean winchester #john winchester
