ok here’s all my Thoughts about mq s3 and why it’s probably the weakest season so far.
tl;dr It just feels like they wrote themselves into a corner with how s2 ended and then didn’t know how to continue on from there. And it’s disappointing! It’s back to how it was in s1 where the only real strong character arc is Ian and Poppy’s, and the rest of the characters are just kinda… there to do funny stuff. And it’s not the worst thing in the world and they kiiiinda pull it together a little in the finale, but it’s disappointing because we know they can do good character arcs for all the characters simultaneously, because they did that in s2! Also fuck NFTs
Rest is under a read more bc I told y’all I’d write a novel
let’s compliment sandwich this so good things first:
The GrimPop storyline was good! Easily the strongest aspect of the season, tho I feel like Ian Winger-speeching himself out of the conflict was maybe a bit too easy? It was a good speech, I liked it, it fits their weird toxic codependent relationship well, but I would have liked to see him doing more for Poppy. Ah well, still good.
The bad is uhhh a lot. I don’t even know where to begin.
Actually let’s start with the metaverse/NFT shit, because it was shit and really soured me on the first half of the season. I get why these topics were included, it was a hot issue when they were writing the season, but it sucks how they were implemented. First off, it’s aged like milk, what with the multiple crypto crashes and NFTs kinda disappearing out of the collective consiousness (thank christ). Second, the fact that there’s no talk of the negative aspects of NFTs. Atrocious, especially concerning Rachel, who, being ostensibly the leftist of the group, should really at the very least have brought up the negative impact on the environment that NFTs/crypto has. Unfortunately, it does make sense why this happened. Ubisoft was one of the first game companies to use NFTs in their games, and Rob Mcelhenney owns one of those ugly fucking apes (I hope for his sake he’s sold it already), so he’s clearly invested in this shit. Obviously neither was gonna shittalk NFTs when they have such a big monetary stake in them. Hugely disappointing, but not surprising.
Now the characters... let’s start with Dana, because her “character development” was easily the most baffling to me. Like. Who is this? Where did this mini-Ian come from? This isn’t who Dana was. She had confidence, sure, but not Ian levels of delusional confidence. And like, what was the point of making her so much like Ian? How did that serve her character? Most she did was act like a kind of mediator between Ian and Poppy, but what did it do for her? The last ep kinda wrangles this into her being fed up with them and starting her own thing, but like, she was happy to hang out with Ian for most of the season. I dunno, I can kinda see what they were going for, but it doesn’t feel like there was a proper build-up to that final episode.
Let’s go to everyone’s favourite tumblr sexyman, Brad. Again, the last episode blatantly states his “arc” (working his way up to being in power again), but like. All the stuff inbetween doesn’t feel like it really adds up to anything. I mean, what did him being the janitor really... do. He acts like he’s up to something, but then he isn’t, and by ep 3 he’s already just doing HOMIE stuff again. I think it could have been so much more fun if he’d actually used his position as a janitor to weasel his way back into monetization. Like, digging up dirt on people and stuff. And again the build-up to the finale wasn’t really there. Oh, he wants a challenge now? He never talked about that. Where did that come from? Why not seed that more? Also, would have liked for his eating disorder to be addressed more. It’s so rare to see men with eating disorders on tv, it could’ve been something special. Maybe next season.
Rachel... I’m highly skeptical of her suddenly being “dumb”. Like sure, she was always shown to be a little airheaded, but it feels like they really turned it up to 11 and like... for what? It reminds me too much of how Britta was treated in later seasons of Community, and that was shitty then and is shitty now. It’s just wild to me that they’d have this whole arc in s2 about her finding her passion, and then they just throw it away. She could’ve been the new writer instead of the new HOMIE! Also, if she’s so dumb, how can she be made the new HOMIE at all. That’s a high fucking position, and you expect me to believe they just gave that to some rando ex-tester? I know MQ isn’t realistic, but I have my limits. And then they kinda lampshade that by having Brad be like “oh I engineered this” but that just feels lazy. Like my brother in christ you put her in this storyline, don’t act like it all meant nothing now. Also I know capitalism is a hell of a drug and I love me a corruption arc but could we for once have a leftist character on tv who like. Sticks to their guns and isn’t a massive hypocrite. Please.
THE LACK OF REAL STORYLINE BETWEEN BRAD AND JO. Hello he went to jail for her??? Hello?? Can we address this? Even a little? Maybe in the ep called TO CATCH A MOUSE?? It wasn’t even a mouse but you named it To Catch A Mouse and then you don’t have some sort of conversation between the mouse and the shark hello? Do I have to do everything myself around here??
Also, C.W. @kaitcake1289 already wrote a good post on this but I’d just like to reiterate what a disappointment it is that his death seemingly has zero impact on anyone. And it could have been such a good way to tie all the characters together, which I think was sorely needed with how divided they were between MQ and GrimPop. The grief they would all feel from losing the studio’s weirdo grandpa could have been such a nice overarching theme. And it could all impact them in different ways and drive their arcs this season! Just a missed opportunity, and frankly a weird way to treat the death of one of the major characters. Even Pierce’s death in Community was more impactful, and he left because there was major beef between the actor and the showrunner.
I’m a bit hmm about the idea of Dana/Jo/Brad in their own studio, bc I just don’t think splitting the characters up like this worked out this season, but we’ll see. I hope they have an actual plan this time lmao.
Okay other end of the compliment sandwich uhhhhh. I think David’s arc was decent. It was nice to see him get along with Jo and to see him stand up for himself. Um. The Christmas ep was very good. Sarian was another banger backstory ep. In general there were loads of jokes I liked! I’m just disappointed with how the characters that weren’t Ian or Poppy were treated.

is it just me or do some people exaggerate or misinterpret jo's interactions with brick. I've seen jock being called "physically abusive"???? the ONLY violent thing jo has done out of malicious intent towards brick was crush his hand to assert dominance. That is absolutely nothing to how jo treats other people (throwing cameron like a ragdoll, using lightning as shark bait, hell she was about to beat the shit out of dawn), or how canon couples have treated each other in the show (cartoon slapstick, guys. I’m not saying they’re physically abusive).
I don't even count the slapping thing because it was in a "snap out of it, man!" way and it was def out of concern judging by the look on her face. The most jo does to brick is call him mean names or strategize against him which she does to literally everyone. Even brick sees it as her trying to annoy him. He literally takes part in their competition as well; it's not jo harassing him, it's a RIVALRY. She just teases him the most because she interacts with him the most (because she LIKES competing with him).
Idk i don't like basing how she'd act in a relationship on how she acts in a competition to win a million dollars, and I don't like when people portray their relationship as if brick's some poor defenseless victim to jo's antics. It's a rivalry.

Mine is in the circle of hell where every demon is female and they keep hitting on him
Also as for your own personal thoughts, do you think Daigo could have been into Mine?
I mean... maybe because I'm bi, but sounds preferable to burning in hell for "quintillions of years" as described lol
And I've talked about it a few times (though I guess I've never compiled it all in one place), but personally I think it all makes less sense if Daigo isn't into Mine. Take, for example, Mine's original character story. From start to finish, while Mine's agonizing over initiating a friendship, Daigo's the one who's "making moves."
He's inviting Mine out to a bar (one that's intimate and out-of-the-way, located in the Champion District—where, As I'm Always Saying, the LGBT-friendly establishments we're aware of are clustered—with a bartender he's comfortable confiding in). He's asking if Mine's currently seeing anyone, taking care not to gender a potential partner. He's leaving the area where all the nightlife is to take Mine to the hotel district and tell him he "wants some action."
And he's clearly thrown off when Mine doesn't catch on to what he means. Like, I fully believe Daigo was intending to propose a sexual encounter of some kind—maybe going their separate ways, maybe arranging a threesome or foursome with some ladies, maybe a one-on-one with Mine, who knows—and ditch Mine at the hotel.
Then there is, of course, the reserve bottle. Now, I can't speak from experience, but I'm told it's exceedingly unusual to reserve a bottle (particularly an expensive one) for a "friend." And that's sort of corroborated by the story Kashiwagi tells in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Like, it's in how they look at each other on the rooftop. It's in how Daigo is willing to lay down his life for Mine without a second thought and always has been, even before Mine felt the same about Daigo. It's in how, despite the fandom's incessant "yandere" characterization of Mine, Daigo is just as willing to kill to protect him.
They have one of the most special bonds in the series to me. They're best friends, and Mine is undoubtedly Daigo's closest confidant; of course, it helps that Mine takes no shit, much like Kashiwagi, but I think it would've been invaluable for Daigo to have someone like that his own age. And Daigo's got nothing but praise for Mine except his misgivings that the seems too guarded around him, but then again, he's not going to force Mine to open up before he's ready.
In a series that's all about beating your own ideals into the other person, it's wonderful to see two people who genuinely like each other and are able to make themselves clear with words and actions alone. When it comes to the thoughts they allow to come to the surface, at least. I think Daigo has to be into Mine, but I also think Mine's too dense to realize it. Perhaps vice-versa, too.
That all ties back into what I was saying about the reserve bottle. I can't help see it as perfectly symbolic of their mutual attraction. Never acting, waiting for "the right time" until it's too late, but holding it close to their hearts even when the moment has passed. And then all that's left to do is preserve the memory.
But, you know, that's just how I'd like to see it. I can't make any definitive statements (not that I was asked to, but as a wiki editor, I can't suppress the urge). Overall, I'm more inclined to believe it's not purposeful. Like, twooo gay major characters!?!?! That's pushing it...

I see a lot of focus on Jupe's role in NOPE, and while I believe that to be completely understandable and deserved considering the impact him and his actions have to the story, I think there's a lot of people overlooking the tragedy of Mary Jo Elliot's character. I mentioned her briefly in a separate post of mine on the meaning of the upturned shoe, but I thought I'd expand a bit more on it to settle the nest of brainworms that have gathered in my head.
MJE, to me, has such a tragedy about her compared to her fellow child star, Jupe. The Gordy's Home incident was undoubtedly traumatic to both actors, and I don't want to try minimise or ignore the immensely painful past of Jupe because I do believe he was victimised heavily, by his exploitative child star career, by the Gordy's Home incident, and also the huge spectacle following Gordy's Home. However, when I think about MJE, I really do believe she plays a small, yet vital part in NOPE.
MJE was a young girl when Gordy attacked her following the unexpected pop of a balloon on the set. We witness a very concealed verson of the incident, as it is shown through the perspective of young Jupe underneath the table, but the sounds of the incident don't leave much uncertain as to the viciousness of the attack. We hear flesh ripping, yells, all the while her body is half concealed by the furniture of the set.
I think it's interesting how we're shown MJE. We are shown her child star face through sitcom clips prior to the incident and the t-shirt she wears at the Jupiter's Claim. I think the fact her child self is not ever truly separated from pain and trauma tells us a lot about how her and Jupe have responded to the events of that day. Both of them have been turned into a spectacle and rely on their past to get by.
The only time we see MJE's face, is the glimpse we get when she looks up at Jean Jacket. We see her face bearing the marks of her past, as she stares up at what would be her end.
It feels utterly heartbreaking to me that she had went through so much, only for her to end up digested slowly in Jean Jacket's flesh cylinder overnight, in the sticky and claustrophobic space surrounded by everyone else who went to Jupiter's Claim.
And it makes me think about just how much Jupe was reliant on spectacle. He knew MJE was coming out as he had introduced her, perhaps he had even invited her to it. I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say they likely became quite close after the Gordy's Home incident, and developed a trust of sorts.
Jupe, being aware of this colossal creature that feasts on things, and using it to bring in profit while endangering the life of Mary Jo Elliot, and so many others, shows us just how far he was willing to go for the show. for the spectacle. for the drama of it all.
I think MJE plays a vital role in showing the full extent that some people will go to just for the spectacle. While the motorbike influencer and Antlers do also help in demonstrating this aspect, the significance of MJE, wearing her child face, being swallowed by Jean Jacket almost feels like, to me, that Jupe has fed her past to it aswell.
He never let things be, he never sought out a different approach to success or appreciation, he has always relied on the hurt and pain of himself and those around him to get by. Whether it be his memorabilia room, OJ jr's horses, or anything else, they all, ultimately, end up being used for spectacle. And Mary Jo Elliot is all of this personified.

Poly!JO ficlet (legit it's tiny)
I'm not gonna make a full story out of this but I loved the very short intro I wrote so I'm gonna post it here cause I think you guys will like it
Bojan kneed Kris very hard in the balls in his mad dash to get to the bathroom before he threw up .
He ignored the gasping sound behind him and Jure's confused groan as he made it just in time to empty his stomach. He thought he could hear Nace ask "Kris are you good?" in a very sexy and very sleep filled voice.
Bojan might have drunk a bit too much if his pounding head and inability to move from the toilet seat was anything to go by.
He must have had a good night though if there was at least 3 other people in his bed. He heard pained wheeze followed by a shout of "AGAIN?"
Jan was suddenly next to him, half shoving him off as he too hurled into the toilet.
Bojan chuckled before messily stroking Jan's hair and tucking it behind his ear.
"What a romantic start to the morning" Bojan half whispered as he stared at Jan across the toilet bowl. Jan rolled his eyes.
"Next birthday we celebrate we are not fucking drinking" he groaned out.
