seeing a post that basically confirmed the obvious disparity in content made me think more about a scene i would have liked to see with gale and that i've been thinking about for a while now.

i always felt a bit sad that his condition is so often treated as a joke by the fandom and to a lesser extent by the game itself. i always thought that this is partially down to the fact that we don't truly get so see gale actively be in pain due to his condition, other than brief glimpses and hints:

we do hear the urgency in his voice when he explains when and why he needs an artefact and the relief in his voice when the protag chooses to help him.

we see it, too, when he is afflicted by the arcane hunger condition:

we get glimpses of it when he consumes an artefact:

he mentions it, too, in his dialogues, but it's very much downplayed by gale or phrased in such a way that is meant to overplay it with humour, or perhaps even to distance himself from it by using metaphors:

that is until we actually get to see it through his eyes, if only for the briefest of moments:

*Its teeth, its claws, it's unstoppable as it digs through and becomes part of you. And gods, it is ever-hungry...*

gale also has an idle animation where he--quite often--reaches up to touch the orb, perhaps because it flares with pain, like an old wound is wont to do:

from the last conversation we have with gale, and after catching all of these little moments of things he says or does with how the orb affects him, we learn that consuming the magic from artefacts no longer has any effect at all. the only solution that tara and he were able to find no longer works:

it would scare him and imbalance him, and it would finally destabilise the orb, make it more volatile.

but what happens in the game after that? the orb becoming volatile enough for the artefacts to no longer have an effect has no consequences at all: you are able to do the tiefling party, all quests in the underdark, the entirety of the grymforge, and, should you choose to do so, the entirety of the mountain pass and rosymorn monastery without an incident at all or any mention of the condition itself/any discomfort or fear it might cause.

there's no urgency here, no follow-up, to what the narrative set up... and then we meet deus ex elminster and the orb is stabilised, and the urgency that came before literally is handwaved out of existence.

what i would have liked instead to happen--or at least to bridge the gap between the artefacts no longer working and elminster stabilising it to be used on mystra's behalf--is the following:

i think it would have been nice to have a scene with gale where we do get to see--on a much smaller scale--him losing control over the orb, have the protag and the companions see what he is trying desperately to keep contained within himself, what gnaws at him, what continues to haunt him.

it could happen perhaps after a particular gruelling and intense fight--and there are enough of that in the underdark and at the mountain pass. it could have been a ! conversation, providing both friendship and romance content.

have the orb act up after expending so much energy to manipulate the weave to the fullest of his abilities, have gale manage to reign it in, but barely, show that it takes a lot of power and effort for him to do so.

that it hurts, with none of gale's metaphors to hide behind or jokes to play it off.

have the audience truly see the gravity of what he is going through.

I think it's extremely interesting how Baghera noticed Fit's weird habits.

She saw his logout room and liked it, but she also asked what others didn't until now.

"Why do you log out here instead of your house?"

His house, beautifully decorated, is less than 30 blocks away, it has several rooms, his chests, photos of his Son, everything!

But he just answers.

"I don't know, I'm a creature of habit"

And that is key to understand what's going on!

Fit is a historian and a veteran of 2b2t, a wasteland were you will only find destruction, Nothing ever stays. But now he is on Quesadilla Island, a paradise for someone who has lived for years in the worst place on Earth.

A place where everything stays.

Still, he can't let go the habits he built for years. You never make a base because it will be destroyed. You never show where you rest because you will get trapped and killed. You can't trust anyone because they will eventually stab you in the back.

Yet, he has allowed himself to relax a bit. He made a big base, one that can he seen from blocks away, he let Ramón make him a room to rest in even though anyone can access it too; he trusts his son and would do anything for him.

But it all brings us back to that one question.

He can't sleep peacefully in his base because, even though he is now a father, a trusted friend and neighbor, and someone anyone in the island can ask help from, he is still that same 2b2t historian.

Whoever is sending the cats (or spies in the form of his son's favorite animal) needs to be aware that they won't catch him off guard. He has been the hunted and the hunter for years, a couple of cats won't throw him off.

It's hard to let go of old habits, especially when you still practice them everyday.

okay but winged!eddie has THEE potential— he gives himself away constantly with his wings, whether he notices it or not like he gets all puffed up when he’s embarrassed but he also ends up cocooning himself within them a bit, them tucking around his body a little closer. he also uses them to bug steve. so much. needs his attention? eddie does just a little flap that sends a tiny gust of wind that always messes steve’s hair up & steve has to pretend he’s annoyed every time as he fixes his hair. eddie tucks them in as tight as he can the first time he’s in steve’s room but he’s too busy turning to have a look at everything to notice how he’s knocking everything off a shelf in one fell swoop and is mortified, his face pink and the wings all bunched up behind his back :’) he also uses them to block the sun, block the rain, whatever— he loves being able to stick them in steves face and make it impossible to see past anything BUT his wings hehe

oh his wings are SO expressive, he cannot for the life of him keep anything to himself because his wings will give him away immediately. he cant even hide his like for certain pop songs because they just start bouncing away.

so his rebellion is MESSY WINGS.

He's one of the very few people in Hawkins with wings, came from his mothers side of the family, Wayne doesnt have em, so thats why he gave Eddie the only bedroom in the trailer so he's not all cramped in the living room, he does spend a lot of time up on the roof though, likes it up there.

It's not like... uncommon for people to have wings either, there's tons of them in big cities, but it's rare enough out in bumfuck indiana that Eddie's considered a freak for having them in such a small town so thats also a stigma.

messy wings, plus being one of the only few in town to have em? tricky life to live that one.

they're real big too, so rain or shine he's solid, freak rainshower? he's got a built in umbrella, too bright out? instant shade.

and he does so enjoy being a shit with them, he'll nudge his friends with them, use feathers he's plucked to tickle noses, his friends will find random eddie feathers in their backpacks and stuck to their clothes cause he's forever molting down feathers cause he doesnt groom them properly.

Steve though, Steves bedroom is not built for wings though. his house is big sure, and Eddie can stretch out his wings properly in the backyard without knocking anything over, but his bedroom isnt built for a winged person to be in there, so he's KNOCKING STUFF OFF SHELVES AND HE'S VERY SORRY ABOUT IT SO HE'S JUST SITTING THERE AS STILL AS POSSIBLE BEING VERY QUIET TRYING NOT TO BREAK STUFF.

but Steve is... a little in awe of him. hard not to be really, yeah Eddie's always been a bit of a scraggly mess, but those wings... they're so big and fluffy and Steve just wants to tidy them up, groom them, an then Eddie lets him and it's just-- wow.

very wow. softer than he could have imagined, like silk under his fingertips, each feather lighter than air, he's got pinions longer than his entire goddamn arm twice the size at least, they're big.

and eddie is losing his damn mind.

Stuck thinking about the period of time when He Xuan didn't have any reason to resent Shi Qingxuan. Before He Xuan knew that Shi Qingxuan was walking around flaunting his divinity. Before He Xuan knew he had revenge to take.

What did He Xuan think of this bubbly young god who glued themself to his side? Were they magnetic? Did He Xuan find himself drawn in? How long had it been since someone had genuinely cared about him? How much did it hurt when he discovered what Shi Qingxuan was responsible for?

Stuck thinking about the way Shi Qingxuan surely would have hung off of He Xuan like a clinging vine and how He Xuan never fully pushed him away. Did He Xuan relax into being one of the few people who genuinely cared about Shi Qingxuan, being someone who didn't want them for their merits? How many times did He Xuan chase someone out of Shi Qingxuan's court because they were trying to take advantage of her? Thinking about the Durante/Zenos WoL/Golbez parallels right now and the one that sticks out the absolute MOST is that Durante is what Zenos would have been if he had his "good reason." If he and the WoL had been on the same team to begin with, if they were fighting the same fight.

Durante doesn't know how to cope with Golbez gone, he was who he was because of Golbez, what was he *without* Golbez, so instead of finding that out, he BECAME Golbez. Just as Zenos needed to know the WoL so badly that he hijacked their body, Durante needed to keep Golbez as close as possible and followed his friend's ambition to it's most destructive extreme, his way of keeping Golbez alive. Like Zenos tore the world apart to keep HIS connection with WoL alive.
