⤷ gender neutral, ambiguous race, and any size reader. Requests are open, thank you for reading!
Warnings: mentions of characters’ trauma, minor spoilers??? I’ll try and keep them limited
a/n: I’ll try to stay as spoiler free as possible! I loved season 2, some bits were a kinda touch and go, but overall I think they made it really interesting. Also I’m not including Wylan, sorry! I love him but ... I just don’t wanna add him...

𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Going along with a plan that Kaz had created, your role was to help the Crows on an extremely difficult heist. But your job somehow ended up being linked with your crush; the very crow that makes your heart flutter. Your persona is their new wife/husband, who has a “rich father”. Meaning that you have to stay in a nearby hotel as a couple on their honeymoon.

・His faked joyful smile dropped once the bellboy left the room
・Watching him, you saw his calculated movements - the way he rested his cane against the desk, and took two steps to sit down on the bed
・His gloves stayed on as he said, “I’m sorry there’s one bed. Too suspicious otherwise.” Kaz’s tone was even, but it hitched on the word ‘suspicious’.
・You knew Kaz hated physical contact, hells, he hated when someone stood too close
・In that moment, you didn’t know how to respond, surely Kaz, Bastard of the Barrel, wasn’t going to sleep on the floor. The absence of a couch was obvious, and you knew he had to sleep somewhere comfortable because of his leg
“Kaz, I can take the floor. I know physical contact isn’t an easy thing for yo-”
“No, I’m fine.” He cut you off, a sharp look in his eye. You could see that his mind was somewhere else. Somewhere dark.
・The night was awkward to start off with, like two magnets being pulled and pushed apart
・But then you asked about the plan - getting all the details. Well, what you thought were all the details.
・He loosened up when he was able to talk about logical subjects
・Once you realised that, the atmosphere started to ease and you could see Kaz start to relax ... (his version of relaxing)
・With each hour a piece of Kaz’s clothing was taken off. His jacket, his shoes. As if he was slowly getting ready for bed.
・There was always something heavy in the air though, like something was unspoken. It hung like grey clouds, ready to let rain fall
・But time ticked by, and eyes began to feel heavy
・At first you both laid down and kept a pillow between you, but then there was hardly any room to move.
・So you came up with the idea that you could sleep the other way. Instead of your heads at the top of the bed, they now rested on the sides. It meant your feet were dangling off the side, but it gave you and Kaz a lot of room.
“Do not tell anyone about this.”
“Kaz...you know I wouldn’t.”
・His voice was low when he said: “I know.”
・In the morning, when you awoke, Kaz was already awake. Already planning.
    “I got you some breakfast.”
  𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐣
・It was you who said you would sleep elsewhere.
・You were so close to falling in love with Inej, and she had no clue. The sore joke was that she felt the exact same. And neither of you thought the other even cared.
“It would be too obvious if we weren’t sleeping in the same bed. I have a feeling they’re already suspicious of something.”
・Even if that wasn’t the truth, you didn’t care. When was an opportunity like this going to arise?
・Kaz didn’t need either of you tonight, so you were both able to unwind. But past experiences meant neither of you could fully do so unless you were in your trusted homes.
・The room was quite spacious; painted white and pale blue, it felt completely different to hotels in Ketterdam (which were dark, dingy and usually had a weird smell.)
・This one had a balcony that overlooked the famous lake that ran through the clean city
・The bathroom matched the colours of the rest of the room, with a rectangular window that let in the morning light but was high enough that no one would be able to see in.
・It was a gorgeous room; airy, light and inviting. Exacly what you thought a summer holiday would be
“Nina would absolutely love this,” you called from the lounging room. Where stacks of books, games and other various entertaining devices lay.
“I almost feel bad...” Inej trailed off, appearing right behind you (scaring the sh*t out of you).
・There was a wordless conversation between the two of you, where you hinted at sleeping on the lounge. But Inej shook her head.
・Too suspicious. What if they walk in?
・You were glad she was okay with it
・And when the night was late, and you couldn’t stop yawning, Inej laughed and motioned toward the bed
“You don’t snore do you?” You asked, with a wry grin. You knew the Wraith didn’t snore. She barely made a sound during her waking hours.
“Of course I do-” she replied, catching onto the irony
・When you were in bed, Inej faced outward, but for some reason you decided to grasp onto this opportunity
“Inej, why are you a Crow?”
・From then on you kept talking. Face to face, her brown eyes capturing yours.
・You both spoke low, as if someone was trying to hear
・Neither of you wanted to stop talking, or to stop asking the next question. Like either of your lives depended on it, you kept trying to know more.
・It wasn’t until Inej stifled a large yawn that you both decided sleep was needed
・And the next morning, you found yourself in the same position - facing Inej, and she hadn’t moved either. But your hands must have drifted in the night, because they had clasped together
  𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐬
・Ever the gentleman, he gestures for you to have the bed. And without a couch in the room, he offers to sleep on the floor - far away from you to be as respectful as possible.
“Don’t be stupid,” you retort, flinging yourself on the bed. You pat the space next to you and he blushes. Deeply.
・The giant of a man moved the bags out of the way and flared his nostrils
“Have we not established a relationship based on trust, dear Helvar?”
・He rolled his eyes at you. An occurance that happened all too often.
・But you knew him. More than he thought you did, however, you were always still blown away by his gentle ways. There wasn’t a time when he didn’t open a door for you, or helped you up or down from high places. But his kindness didn’t stop there
・He always stood in front of you whenever there was danger.
・And made sure you were never left alone in dangerous situations.
・If someone tried anything with you, Matthias was there to step in.
・Jesper started calling him your bodyguard
・And although all these things happen, you still didn’t think Matthias was attracted to you.
・You were never the traditional beauty. So you didn’t think someone like Matthias, who was this godlike man, would ever be interested in you
・And the fact that you were his pretend wife/husband, created endless flutters in your stomach. A feeling that was foreign, until you met Matthias.
“Are you hungry?” Matthias asked, dropping to unzip something from his bag.
“Oh no no, I’m okay-”
“I could hear your stomach rumbling from here.” Matthias grinned, and passed you some dried jerky that he bought from a vendor hours before
・He was always doing things like that. Thinking of you and what you might need...or want.
・You couldn’t help but blush. Even though you tried to keep up your jaunty attitude, you ... couldn’t
・And when he sat on the end of the bed, nibbling on his piece of jerky, and asking about you, your heart was beaming
・After an hour, Matthias still hadn’t moved and you realised you had to tell him what was okay.
“Move up here,” once again you patted the space next to you.
・You had wriggled underneath the blanket and watched Matthias take of his shoes and get into bed
・Your heart was in your throat. A thumping, fluttering mess.
・You started up the conversation, as he turned over to face you
・When your eyes began to droop, and Matthias started mumbling when he spoke, you two fell asleep in the King sized bed.
・You thought you were the first to wake, but you could hear the change in Matthias’ breathing
・However, you tried not to move as well. His strong arms had moved you onto his chest, and there you lay. Your head exactly where his heart was.
・At times you could feel him rub your back and those goddamn tingles never left your body
  𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫
・You already know this cheeky motherf*cker is grinning like a chesire cat
“I guess even fate wants us together...”
“If by ‘fate’ you mean Kaz, and by ‘wants us together’ you mean doing our job. Then yeah Jesper, that’s exactly what’s happening.”
・Your exterior was hard, but inside you were melting. Ever since meeting Jesper your insides melted whenever he was near.
・Inside the room, you turned to put your weapons on the bedside table. Twin daggers, your personalised gun, a small knife you always kept in your boot (you put that one underneath your pillow) and small hatchet that you usually kept on your back.
“There’s something quite comedic about this-” Jesper said, with his legs up on the bed, boots gleaming, and his arms around his head.
“If you don’t take your goddamn shoes off the bed-” you countered, with a small fury.
“Ooh, yes boss,” Jesper complied with a grin.
・It was a battle, trying to keep that stupid smile off your face. Somehow Jesper was always able to bring it out
・You didn’t have ocd, but you did have problems with outside clothes coming into contact with inside items. Jesper was used to the Ketterdam life, so keeping things clean was always difficult.
・The room was cosy, and a fire was lit. A steady flame burned while you and Jesper talked about your next actions.
・But somehow the conversation took a turn and you were talking about yourselves, your backgrounds and lives.
・Time flew by as you spoke, and soon night turned into day.
・The once roaring fire had dwindled into ashes and it wasn’t until Jesper yawned that you realised.
・You were going to shout obscenities but there was a knock at the door
    “Did we just...?”
“Yeah! Sh*t, Fuc-”
     “Wake up call!”
  𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐚
・She gave a hearty laugh before looking at you with a sly grin. But her attention was grabbed by the food menu
“Ooh, I hope they have waffles...”
・Completely unbothered by having to share a bed with you
・Behind her bravado is a heart that has been captured by you. She’s just very good at hiding it.
・You, on the other hand, are a bit more quiet. Well, anyone is quiet compared to Nina (with the exception of Jesper).
・So you are a bit hesitant when it comes to showing emotions. Especially since you’re afraid of seeming weird. Growing up, you had heard that word to describe you many times
“We don’t have to share a bed, it’s okay if you don’t want to,” Nina says after a heavy silence. Her eyes flick toward you, a half grin appearing on her face. It was almost ... sad?
・You shake your head, “no no, it’s fine.” Inside you are DYING. Nina?? Sad??? You would burn the world to the ground before you made her sad.
・Perking up (slightly, as she’s never truly sad), Nina moves through the room, looking at all the objects and items. Scowling at the lack of entertainment.
“Really, Kaz could have picked a nicer place...”
・Pulling out a waffle that you had saved from breakfast earlier, you turned around and held it high in the air.
“I have saved thy favourite snack. Please take this as a token of my friendship,” you bowed slightly and waited for her reaction.
・Nina bowed low in response, a large grin on her pale face.
“I accept thy token, with immense gratitude.”
・But the act was quickly forgotten about as she squealed and ran over to you.
・ “I don’t know how well it’s going to taste...” You mumbled, showing the crumbled waffle.
・Nevertheless, you were now her favourite person.
・And the night was one you would always remember
・Like a sleepover with your best friend, you felt like you had known Nina since childhood
・The next morning, you were the first to wake.
・Tangled together Nina’s arms were firmly wrapped around you, snuggling her form closer to yours.

Hiiiii!!! I love your dating Kaz with a chronic illness but can you do one with Jesper? I can’t find any and I love your writing so much! Thank you :)))
Jesper Fahey x (Chronically ill) Reader - Headcanons <3
Tumblr media
Pairing : Jesper Fahey x Chronically ill! Reader
A/N - Here are my headcanons for Jesper with a chronically ill reader!! Much like with the Nina post, I hope I have done him justice since it's my first time writing for him. Please keep in mind my requests are open, so send any ideas through and I will get round to writing it when i can !! <3
════ ∘◦ᵒ 𓅓 ᵒ◦∘ ════
Unlike Kaz, who understands chronic illness and pain first hand, or Nina who has the ability to ease symptoms, Jesper has neither advantage
Panic was all he could process as you explained your condition to him for the first time, traces of fear deepening with each symptom you explained
Throughout the first few flare ups, Jesper would be completely distraught, fussing over your every pain, whilst trying to uphold some sense of calm on his features
However, Jesper is extremely enduring, and would slowly find his footing and discover his own ways of assisting you
Almost as natural as his own breathing, humour would likely be his first call in trying to distract you from your pains and troubles
Ludicrous jokes would spill out of his mouth, as your aches become overwhelmed by laughter, sweeping away your exhausted thoughts
"Come on, even I didn't think that one was that funny?" - he would tease as your mood lightens with the laughter he brings
The sharpshooter would literally do anything to brighten your features with the smile he adores, and humour is definitely what comes to him the easiest
However, sometimes your symptoms make even Jesper's golden jokes seem dull, and he has to push even harder to be rewarded with your melodious laughter
So, I can vividly picture Jesper dragging Inej, Wylan, and Nina into the room, dressed in costumes wilder than imagination itself
"I present to you, the Dreg's production of... uhmm, I can't actually remember what we decided to call it in the end."
Throwing on a similarly garish costume, Jesper would join the crows in performing a slight variation of one of the Barrel's most popular shows
The laughter these performances would bubble out of you would cause all sorts of new pains, your stomach cramping from the amount of laughter drawn out of you
(Even Kaz would not be able to contain a smirk at the sight of it)
The musical varients of these shows would be the absolute best
Jesper would definitely have draws full of notes on which shows he could do next, and how to modify them to exactly what you enjoy most <3
Although Jesper's charm can also distract you from some of your symptoms, he discovered fairly early on that he could use his allurement to help you
Travelling to the most respectable parts of the Barrel, Jesper would charm every doctor he could find into giving him the best advice possible to soothe your condition
After leaving with a flirtatious wink, he would race to gather the medicine they recommend, noting down every shard of information he receives in order to support you
However, I think the easiest form of comfort Jesper can almost always supply, is love
No matter how bad your symptoms are, his arms will always race out to warm you, lips settling gently on your forehead, words wrapping around your being and showering you in flecks of comfort
Despite his initial hesitation, Jesper is a fast learner, and whatever you ask for he will always, always do it for you <3
════ ∘◦ᵒ 𓅓 ᵒ◦∘ ════
P.S : As a chronically ill person myself, I just wanted to say that my requests will always be open for ideas like this, and my private messages are open for anything. If anyone is experiencing any form of chronic illness and needs someone to talk to, I am here for you!! It can be super isolating and difficult, especially when those around you cannot understand your struggles. Hopefully this post can find all my spoonie crow fans!! <333

Misinformation - Jesper Fahey
Warnings: general crow crimes, petty theft, and chaos.
AN: some Jesper scrap for you little scavengers
Tumblr media
Jesper Fahey was known for being something of a loud and talkative soul, and sometimes this got him into trouble. Often you could ignore it, laugh it off or tease the boy when he had been called into Kaz's quarters for a stern talking to. It wasn't often that Jesper's incapability to be quiet came to have an effect on you, though, you knew eventually the trouble Jesper brought with him would catch up to you as well.
"You're partnering me up with Jesper?" You weren't mad, rather surprised at the news you had received from the bastard of the barrel. Kaz intended to complete a job by pairing both you and Jesper together, and you could by no means understand why he thought this was a good idea. You tolerated Jesper, laughed at his jokes, and spent enough time with him to be called friends, but you had never done a job together before—you wanted to keep it that way.
"You'll keep him in check" Kaz doesn't bother looking at you, he doesn't have the time to do so. You have come to believe that Kaz just doesn't like people and would do his best to avoid interaction with them at all costs.
"How do you know I'm capable of that?" Your question is genuine. You don't believe you can be the one to keep Jesper Fahey in line, quite frankly you don't think that anyone can, and you're not fond of babysitting.
"Because if you don't, you'll die" Kaz's words come sharp and were not at all what you expected in response. It certainly wasn't a comforting statement, but it was an inspiring one.
"You're sending me on a job that you know will lead me to my death?" You take a step forward but with the slightest tilt of Kaz's head at your approach, you think the better of it.
"If you can keep Jesper in check, you won't see death just yet." His tone is dismissive, and you know he wishes you to leave. It's irritating how much of a hold Kaz has over his entire crew, everyone never daring to protest his methods. There isn't anything you can say to change the mind of Kaz Dirtyhands Brekker and there never will be, so you do what is expected of you and leave the room, and Kaz, behind.
Almost as if on cue, Jesper appears comically from down the hall, turning to walk in the direction which you're headed once he sees you. "You excited about our job?" He seems to bounce rather than walk, and you take note of this for later in case it comes to be something dangerous to the span of your life.
"No".
"Come on," Jesper dares to sling an arm around your shoulder, grinning like a madman. "it's our first job together, it'll be fun."
"Jobs aren't supposed to be fun, Jes".
Jesper just chuckles, removing his arm from around you, opting to walk backward at your side so he can get a better look at you. "Now, Y/N, that's not the right attitude."
You raise a brow, deciding to humour the boy as you head to the stairs. Perhaps you could push him down them and find a new partner—preferably one of few words.
"You need to enjoy life, these jobs, they can be fun I promise," He pauses, turning to walk forward once more before glancing your way. "I'll show you."
"You'll show me?" You know you're walking way too fast down the staircase, going the greatest pace you can without running. Jesper, curse his long legs, keeps up with you just fine.
"I'll show you just how enjoyable Kaz's jobs can be."
This is a terrifying statement. It's settling upon you now just how almost imminent your death will be on this job. Jesper seems utterly unfazed by the concept, and you wonder whether Kaz had specified the dangers to the boy as he had you. Most likely he had, but Jesper just hadn't been paying attention.
-
When the day of the job finally arrived, you were sleep deprived and highly strung, two things you most definitely should not have been, but were. The concept of death at the fault of Jesper Fahey's rather loud personality had kept you awake thinking of all the ways you could keep the boy quiet and focused. You had thought of only two options so far, tying him up and shoving a cloth in his mouth, and of course, killing him. But you couldn't do either of those things to Jesper, he was your friend after all, and you would never be able to find it in yourself to hurt him beyond the friendly punch of an arm.
When you saw Jesper, he was dressed as usual in colourful attire that was in no way discrete. "Don't you think all this-" You wave a hand across his outfit suggestively, "Will bring us some unwanted attention?"
Jesper only laughs, placing a hand upon one of the guns at his hips for comfort. "All attention is wanted attention, Y/N".
You can't help but frown, trying to understand what of all things could be going on up in the mind of Jesper Fahey. "I think people trying to kill us is something of unwanted attention, Jes".
"Oh no" Jesper grins wide, something that would be rather contagious were you not so concerned. "That's the best kind of attention".
If you weren't afraid before, you most definitely were now, dragging Jesper out the doors of the Slat. Getting the job over and done with was the only option, facing your possible death braver than running from it.
The destination was something of an unappealing place on the outside, meant to deter criminals such as the Dregs from feeling inclined to enter. But the inside of the place was glamorous and beyond anything you had ever been a part of, and as you looked at Jesper it seemed that he and his choice of dress fit right in. Perhaps you would be the one to draw attention, in nothing but plain work attire.
"Are you worried about your appearance darling?" Jesper is eyeing you close, and you hadn't realized you had been looking down at your outfit until he spoke. All you do is shrug in response, ready to move on, though Jesper's voice stops you.
"I wouldn't worry, you look stunning, as always" he winks and you try your best to ignore the statement, refusing to acknowledge the ghost of a blush on your cheeks. You hate him for it, just how much he makes you feel, whether it be fear or something else entirely.
"In here" You summon Jesper over to you, the boy having taken the smallest of detours over to a rather interesting-looking lamp. He seemed to be having fun with it, reluctant to leave its fancy glow, but he approached you, nonetheless. Following you into the room which you'd found, he seemed oddly close to you, as if he was afraid to let you slip too far into danger. As though he had to be right there with guns at the ready, just in case. It was somewhat comforting that a part of Jesper did take the jobs seriously, even when most of it seemed like a joke.
You must have jinxed it, Jesper's attention seconds later caught by a painting lingering in the darkness. "What on earth is this?" He points to the thing as he makes his way to it, pulling a funny face back at you as he stops beside the art. "Who in their right mind would want this in their house?".
He's right, the painting is horrid. An image of a woman that appears as though possessed, cradling a picnic basket in one arm and a cat in the other, though the animal does not seem at all pleased. You allow a smile to slip, the faces Jesper pulls at the piece something that can not resist the reward of a grin.
As you turn away, however, looking for the particular item that you came for, Jesper speaks again. "I love it when you do that".
The words make you freeze just for a moment, hand outstretched and ready to open the box before you. "Do what?" You know you shouldn't give into his games, but you can't help yourself. You have to know what goes on in that marvellous mind.
"Smile," you can hear Jesper's footsteps as he walks about the room, making you want to look at him so badly. "I love it when you smile."
You refuse to give in to the charm he holds, opening the box before you as if his words have no effect. Clearly, they do, because you can't stop yourself from continuing the conversation.
"Why?"
Jesper laughs behind you somewhere in the room, most likely doing anything but what you were sent here to do. "It's a real smile, an infectious one".
Out of everyone, you were sure Jesper had the infectious smile, his grin always wide and inviting, a teasing kind of smile that dared you to share in his joy. Not that you noticed it enough to recall it in detail. What would that make you if you did?
The open box sat before you, a piece of jewellery inside. It was a large necklace that shone even in the darkness in which you stood. The moonlight from the far window reflected off its bright stones like mirrors, odd colours shining from the gems. This is what Kaz had sent you to retrieve, though the item seemed too fragile to even hold. It was clearly expensive and the thought of breaking it before you got it to Kaz weighed on your mind.
"Is that the necklace?"
You jumped, Jesper's voice right beside you as he lent over your shoulder to get a look at the object. How you had not noticed the boy approach, you did not know.
"I'm not that scary, am I?" He pulled a face in the moonlight, following it up with some kind of childish roar.
"Just don't sneak up on me like that and you won't be." It was hard not to give Jesper your full attention, you had to admit, but there was a job to do, and spending quality time with the boy could wait. You had to grab the jewel and get out before you were caught. Kaz would expect you back within the hour and you were certainly running behind schedule already.
"We should dance." Jesper pulls on your arm, daring you to come into the centre of the room with him. He's smiling in a way that suggests he's excited to take the risk and you hate him for it.
"No, we should not." You tug your arm from his grip, ready to remove the jewellery and make your escape. Jesper is persistent in his other plans.
"Come on Y/N, I promised you fun and I want to show you fun." He sounds genuinely unbothered as if he has all the time in the world to be prancing around some rich stranger's house. You would have expected a little more fear from him, but the boy was in fact without the feeling. So far, the job had gone smoothly, Jesper hadn't been too loud or irritating and there had been no need to watch over him with caution. Now, things were taking a turn.
"I don't consider getting ourselves caught a fun activity." Your voice is full of warning, but Jesper sees opportunity, though you're not sure what for.
"Just one dance Y/N."
"No."
"Give me two minutes of your time, I promise I'm a good dancer." Jesper is back at your side now, making attempts to take your hand in his, though, you swat him away each time.
"Jesper, stop."
To your surprise, Jesper does as he's told, though he doesn't stop talking. "Kaz really has you wrapped around his little finger, doesn't he?" His tone isn't accusatory but rather disappointed, as if he expected more from you. What was he waiting for? Did he expect you to call in the guards just for the thrill of it? Throw away the priceless jewels Kaz wanted just because he wanted to have some fun?
"Don't act like you aren't as well." You throw him a look, though you're not sure it could be entirely interpreted in the darkness, the moon falling behind a cloud outside.
"Do you even want to be here?" Jesper's voice is quieter now, a hint of emotion within the words that you can't quite decipher, but it makes your heart sink, nonetheless.
"No Jes, I don't want to be robbing some rich old lady in the middle of the night." You bring your focus back to the necklace, lifting it from the case as carefully as you can. A part of you was afraid an alarm would go off once it was removed, but you were met with nothing of the sort. Quiet surrounds you, which is somewhat unsettling as you make your way to the door of the room. You had to make it to the kitchen on the second floor now, your escape hatch waiting for you there.
"I meant; do you even want to be here with me?" Jesper is standing back in the room, his voice freezing you in place as you reach for the door handle. He sounds somewhat heartbroken, but there is frustration lacing his speech as well, just a hint of it.
"No Jesper, I don't want to be here with you." You don't know what brings you to say it, the honestly ripping through the quiet of the room just as the moonlight returns. You wish it had stayed hidden, it now casting Jesper in its light as you turn to face him. He doesn't look mad, but he's not happy either. It's as though you are staring at a deflated balloon, one slowly losing its air over time.
"Why not?"
It's a heart-breaking question that you don't know how to answer. You liked spending time with Jesper, but you were known to have high anxiety, and the possibility of him getting you caught or killed on a job weighed heavy on your consciousness. Telling him that made you sound selfish, but you didn't know what else to say.
"You don't like to follow the plan, you like to mess around," You pocket the necklace knowing well enough you've wasted too much time already. Losing it would destroy you. "It stresses me out Jesper, you stress me out."
Jesper lets out a groan, "I stress you out?" glancing up at the ceiling for a moment he runs a hand over his face. He's tired, and so are you. "Why do you think I asked you to dance?"
"Because you were built to stress me out?" You turn back to the door, pulling it open and peeking out as Jesper chuckles behind you. This most definitely had not been the plan and you were certain Kaz would pull you up on being late once you got back to the Crow Club. If you got back to the Crow Club.
"I asked you to dance because I thought it would help you loosen up, calm you down a little."
"Well, you were wrong" You move quickly out of the room, leaving Jesper behind, the boy following after you as you make your way through the house. How you're to get to the second floor without being spotted, you don't know, but you've got to try.
"Kaz is never wrong." You pause then, in the middle of the hallway. You should keep moving and get out of the open, so instead of being a sitting duck, you pull Jesper into the nearest room.
It turns out the room was more of a storage closet, its contents nothing like where you had previously been. You stumbled over a bucket as you tugged Jesper inside, closing the door behind him.
"What did Kaz say to you?" You don't bother whispering even though you probably should, a butler or perhaps the owner of the house able to appear any second.
Jesper doesn't say anything and it's then you realize that your hand is still firmly gripping the fabric of his vest, your hold on it what you used to pull him into the small space with you. You let go and Jesper clears his throat.
"Kaz put us together because he thinks you need to relax, you're too tense on jobs, and believe it or not, that leads to more mistakes than all the dumb shit I do."
You don't believe him, a frown forming on your brow. Jesper reaches up as if to wipe it away, but you slap his hand down. "I have never made a mistake on a job."
"Well, Kaz thinks you'll make one in the future." Jesper shrugs and you hate him for it—how he can be so calm in a situation like this.
"Kaz told me to keep you in line. He said that's why we were on the job together, so I could keep an eye on you." You wait for Jesper to react to the words, maybe flip out a little like you, but he seems unbothered.
His eyebrows raise and soon he's nodding, "That makes sense."
He doesn't care that Kaz sent both of you with different instructions, he's not bothered that he lied to both of you for the sake of the job. Jesper doesn't seem to care. You step back, leaning against the far wall of the storage closet. You're tired and angry, and as much as you hate to admit it, you're still stressed about the job.
"So what? Kaz wanted you to be my emotional support dreg?"
"I guess." Jesper shrugs again and you give in, banging the back of your head against the wall, frustration taking over. Jesper stands before you, something between a worried and amused expression mixing on his features.
"How do you stay so calm all the time?" You ask him finally, giving into Kaz's scheme, as much as you hate to do so. Jesper smiles, though its different to the ones he usually shares, placing a hand on one of the holsters at his hip.
"I don't'.
It's not the answer you were expecting and Jesper seems to notice, the smallest of chuckles leaving his lips. "I'm stressing on the inside all the time, Y/N. Sometimes I let it take over, sometimes I don't. It just depends on the day". His words are gentle, honest, and somehow, they make you feel better. It's nice to know that the panic consuming you at all hours during jobs is something you can share with someone else.
"I guess Kaz thinks we need each other, huh?" You can hear the smile in Jesper's voice now, it's a genuine one, though you can't see it in the dark of the closet.
"Maybe we do." Your words are quiet, but you know he can hear them, and soon he's approaching you, hand grabbing your own.
"Would you be interested in dancing with me some other time then?"
You pretend to think over the offer, waiting a moment in silence with his hand in yours until finally, you give him the relief of an answer. "I would love to".
Before Jesper can say anything more, you drag him back to the door of the closet opening it with caution and stepping out. You don't let go of his hand as you make your way through the house. You don't want to, and as much as you hate to admit it, Kaz was right. Holding Jesper's hand has kept you calmer on a job than you have ever been before. If Jesper notices he doesn't say anything, but he lets you know he's there occasionally, squeezing your hand every once and a while. You appreciate it and him.
It seems like forever, but at last, you make it out of the place, jewellery secure in your pocket, and the job going off without a hitch. You give yourself a moment to bask in this fact, despite being near an hour late to meet Kaz back at the Crow Club. Jesper laughs behind you, a sound of relief similar to what you felt, and you drop his hand, at last, turning to face him.
You can't help the grin that takes over your features, everything that happened blending into one hopeless mess that hadn't been as bad as you expected. Jesper is watching you with something like pride, and you share a moment or two of silence before he breaks it.
"I love it when you smile."
He's already told you this once tonight, and his words make you realize just how wide your grin truly is. You shouldn't be this happy with yourself, there is nothing that should cause this much emotion, other than Jesper, standing before you with his own infectious smile.
You don't say anything, instead extending a hand to him which he takes. He waits a moment before twirling you around, and soon you're dancing in the streets like two young children late for dinner. What makes this just that bit better is that it's that time of night in Ketterdam, where it's quiet and empty other than the few clusters of people lurking in the alleys. On the main streets the moonlight shines down through thinning clouds and you are free to dance with Jesper all the way back to the Crow Club where Kaz should be waiting. You're in no rush, even though you should be back by now.
Jesper is smiling at you as though you are the only person he wishes to know, and you have no doubts that you are looking at him just the same. Kaz will wring you both out to dry by the time you get back, but that's a problem for later, for now you want to stay where you are.

Multilingual Crows
[Disclaimer: I know little about the languages that the Grishaverse languages were based on. These are about my personal headcanons for the Grishaverse languages.]
• Kaz speaks Southern Kerch, but taught himself how to speak like a native of Ketterdam. His old accent and dialect still slips out on occasion when he’s comfortable. He is also attempting to learn Suli, although he claims it’s a “business venture.” (Everyone knows it’s not).
• Matthias speaks high Fjerdan and knows more Kerch slang and swear words than most of the others.
• Nina speaks all languages fluently and can hide her accent. However, when speaking with Inej in Suli, she often slips Ravkan words into her speech.
• Wylan is fluent in Kerch, and knows the basics of and some songs in Fjerdan.
• Inej speaks Suli, Ravkan, and Kerch. On occasion, she’ll tell Kaz a Suli proverb in Suli, both without realizing it and because it doesn’t translate into Kerch. He never corrects her.
• Jesper speaks Zemeni, Kerch, and bits and pieces of Kaelish.
And thus, the Crows have multiple conversations at once, in multiple different languages. Nina and Inej sitting on the couch in the sitting room of the Van Eck mansion, chatting animatedly in Ravkan and Suli. Matthias and Wylan sitting on the rug, having a casual conversation about their days in Fjerdan, while Wylan occasionally turns to Jesper and tells him off in Kerch. Jesper, being Jesper, trying to see how drunk he can get Kaz so that he can see his old accent come out. Kaz, by this point, is comfortable enough with his crows to let some of his armor down, and appeases Jesper eventually, falling back into the Southern Kerch dialect, most of which Jesper can’t understand. (Which only amuses Kaz more.)

Wylan: Hey Jes, can I borrow your keys? I lost mine.
Jesper, grabbing and throwing something from his pocket: Yeah sure, here.
Wylan: ...
Wylan: Jesper?
Jesper: What?
Wylan: This is an engagement ring...
Jesper, patting his pockets: STUPID CARGO PANTS AND THEIR STUPID POCKETS

Given the fact that that we know, canonically, that Jesper and Inej both like Kaz, and that Anika tried to flirt with him at the end of Crooked Kingdom. I fully believe that every fucker in the dregs has a crush on Kaz.
Every single person he's recruited to the gang just said yes cause he's hot. Like this is how every conversation Per Haskell has goes:
Haskell: Ok, I need you to go on a job with Kaz tonight
Dreg: The hot one? Yeah absolutely
Haskell: *slams his head against the desk*

The Crows watching Horror Films
Kaz:
Loves horror movies
Is basically the perfect horror film watcher
Watches intently
Never jumps at the jump-scares, the most you'll get out of him is a startled 'oh'
Always guesses who the mystery killer is
Always guesses it correctly
Loves slasher films
Inej:
Not a big fan of most horror films
Likes the final girl trope
Prefers sci-fi horror to anything else
Will rant about the pseudo-sadist, purity-obsessed horror films and why they can be better to anyone who'll listen
Won't go out of her way to watch a horror but will make an effort if A) Kaz wants to or B) It's made by a diverse minority of some kind
Jesper:
Hates horror films
Watches them because Kaz and Wylan like them
Loves watching them with Wylan because it gives him an excuse to cuddle up to his boyfriend
"are you scared?" "no" (literally shaking in his seat)
Is that one guy who screams at the screen like a goat
"I wish Milo was here, I wish Milo was here, I WISH MILO WAS HERE, I WISH MILOOOOOOOO-"
"ThAt'S nOt WhErE bLoOd Is MeAnT tO bEeEeEEEEEEE-"
"Wy, hold me, I'm scared" "The film hasn't even started yet-"
Jumps at every jump scare. Every. Single. One.
Wylan:
Likes horror films, especially ghost ones
Finds them cathartic
Has long conversations about themes and analysing horror with Inej and Matthias
Has seen all the classics
Likes gothic horror films
Is the only one who'll put up with Jesper's antics
Can't watch slashers - too violent
If he gets scared, he'll cover his ears and scream in short bursts until he isn't scared anymore
Matthias:
Is that one guy who'll analyse the film while watching it
Points out how scientifically incorrect all the kills are
Has very specific catagories for what counts as a horror film
Loves cult films, especially the Wicker Man
Can't watch haunting films, hates them so, so much
Nina:
Doesn't like horror films
Makes fun of Jesper for being so scared but then screams just as loud as him
Yells and swears at the characters for being so stupid
Ended up practically glued to Matthias' lap, if she didn't start out that way
"NO ONE would be that stupid to actually do [X]"
Quotes Scream at every given opportunity
(whenever someone on screen has sex) "Ooooooooh, you gonna diiiiie"
Kuwei:
Laughs at the jumpscares
Not even like a nervous laugh, plain out, hilarious laughter
Knows everything about how the films were made
Loves horror, possibly even more than Kaz
"Jes, are you scared? You can hold my hand if you want"
Has to sit a safe distance away from Wylan at all times to avoid being murdered
Explains how they did that stunt on screen as the stunt is happening (but will shut up if asked nicely)
Really likes body horror

𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬
⤷ gender neutral, ambiguous race, and any size reader. Requests are open, thank you for reading!
Warnings: book & show spoilers
a/n: I’m trying to write the characters as a mixture of the book and show. Some of the characters act quite differently in the books and it’s a bit difficult to pin point their personality, but I hope I do them justice. Thank you for reading xx
ᴹᵃˢᵗᵉʳˡᶤˢᵗ
𝑺𝑭𝑾🌿
𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Everyone is settling down into their own homes. I don’t care what is canon and what’s not.
𝐊𝐚𝐳
・Likes things to be in their place. If they aren’t where they left them than he goes into a bit of a tizzy
“Y/n! Y/n I specifically left them right here and they aren’t right. Here. Where have they gone??”
“No, you moved them because you thought they were too vulnerable sitting there. Look in the third shelf down to your left.”
*Does what you tell him to do* *is embarrassed* *thanks you but not above a whisper*
・You have a lot of nice things in your home, but the most expensive things are usually the jewels and the jewelry that Kaz has gifted you
・He has a lot of the same clothing, so when you open his side of the closet there’s just ... black ... oh and grey
・His cane is never too far from where he is
・Despises the idea of getting a pet
・And you have to beg and beg
・But none of it worked
・So you had to come up with a plan. It was quite manipulative but hey, how else would you have caught Kaz’s attention?
・The dog you have now was once a puppy who had “accidentally” followed you home
“How did it follow you home? We live in Ketterdam, there are a million homes here.”
“I guess it liked...me...”
・He ordered it out
・But you didn’t listen and somehow, the pup had wiggled its way into Kaz’s heart
・He swore he wasn’t going to pick up any poops, but that too was a lie
𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚
・Once settled in, she comes to realise that she really enjoys the finer things in life
・Big bed, silks, many many pillows
・A big bath with hot water straight from the tap
・She adores a long hot bath, lots of bubbles, with lavender and chamomile, candles, and a good book to read - or just to lay there and soak
・She hates waking up early, but is the first one to crawl into bed (she just really likes being in bed)
・Has her own drawing nook - a desk near a big window where she can get natural light. Many types of pencils, quills, inks, etc. She draws people, memories, landscapes, dreams
・Her drawings are framed and are all over the house
・There’s also a library; a room with a cosy corner that has all kinds of books; fiction and non fiction - historical, religious, fantasy etc
・Oh and she adores having the fire going. She wants it on even if it’s barely even cold
・But she hates chopping wood, so when you tell her that it isn’t cold enough for a fire, she’ll go outside and use The Cut to get the wood.
・Loves when you braid her hair; loves it even more when you give her head a lil massage too
・She fusses over you whenever you’re sick. Making you soup, remembering remedies from her upbringing in the orphanage.
・If you burn yourself, cut or have any other injuries, she is constantly checking on it to make sure it doesn’t get infected
・She doesn’t mind doing the laundry - if it means you’ll fold afterwards
・There are a lot of different oils, perfumes, bath products, hair products all over the bathroom
𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐢
・Yes, he is used to being treated like royalty
・But he’s also experienced life on a ship - and that isn’t pretty (at all...it’s quite awful)
・Yet he has seen his destiny as being a ruler, so the biggest change in both of your lifestyles is ... you
・You would have to learn how to live during court
・You couldn’t just leave your chambers in your pajamas (I mean ... you could but drama would start at court most definitely)
・Both you and Nikolai obviously share the same chambers, and actually you both have your own wing in the castle (So I guess you could just stay in your pajamas if you wanted)
・It’s basically having your own home - or huge apartment
・The majority of the decor is white with gold trimmings and accents. Nikolai said you could change whatever you want
・The castle is never quiet, and there are always people coming and going, but your chambers are very very quiet.
・Nikolai doesn’t snore but does talk in his sleep
・It’s nonsensical, but it’s usually about the dreams he’s having
・You have servants that come and clean up after both you and Nikolai
・When Nikolai is finished for the day, he trots up to your shared wing and slumps against the door once it’s closed
・He sighs undoing his buttons, but you like to be the one to do that
𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐣
・Still very quiet around the home, so you get used to seeing her in different parts of the house in a small amount of time
“I swear, sometimes there’s two of you!” You once grumbled, while cleaning up a broken tea cup because she popped up out of nowhere
・Doesn’t like loud sudden noises, so you live a bit from civilisation. Not too far though.
・She gets on really well with cats
・You’d end up adopting two kittens that were the only survivors of a litter
・They were tiny, covered in fleas and skinny as can be. But you both fed them, bathed them and made sure they survived
・One is called Umbra, and the other Sol
・You both take on the styling of the home. Inej quite likes the cottage-esque look. However she does want to honor her heritage and there are a lot of colourful cloth that drapes across the ceiling
・Inej had Jesper insert a rod that holds a long silk cloth so that she can practice her acrobatic skills
・Jesper visits as often as he can, and is usually found hung over in the spare bedroom
・As does Nina, who likes to ask what’s for dinner hours before dinnertime (usually an hour after eating lunch)
・You own the land, with Inej’s name not involved - you didn’t want her to feel tied down. And that she could leave whenever she desired
・Although it’s Suli culture to be travellers, Inej said she did want to be apart of the deed and you were more than happy to change it
・Inej doesn’t sleep very often; she knows when her body needs it but other than that, she really cannot get to sleep
𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐬
・Loves the feeling of a cosy home
・Has actually gone off to cry because living with you in such a lovely, warm, safe environment made him overwhelmed with happiness
・I have this feeling that you would be the type of person to rescue animals and Matthias has to put on this ‘No we barely have enough to feed ourselves, we can’t look after these animals,’ but his stance changes so quickly
・So you have about five dogs so far
・But you still go into town and feed as many as you can
・Matthias thinks he’s in charge, but after a few months together he comes to realise that you will always be in charge
・He actually really enjoys gardening
・Has those well-planned and established herb gardens. The ones that are held in perfect square timber raised beds
・Matthias absolutely threw himself into gardening. Bought books about it, spoke to the elders in town about how to perfectly grow herbs. He was both fascinated and in need on something to focus on after the tragedy he had endured
・You encouraged him, but said he had to promise not to make a mess inside.
・Is a very loud snorer, and hogs the bed, as well as the sheets. It’s just easier to sleep underneath him - not that he would notice. Once his head hits the pillow almost nothing can wake him until morning
𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚
・Safety; that’s what she wants, that’s what she desires most
・A place that she can let her guard down and not have to worry about being used
・She doesn’t like uninvited visitors, and has special locks on all the doors so no one can break in
・When you introduced the idea of a guard dog, she was apprehensive.
“What if it can sense ... the darkness in me?”
“There is no darkness within you, Genya.”
・So you got a Cane Corso, a beast of a dog. That scared even Genya the first time she saw her.
・Is a very light sleeper, but once getting your pup, Genya let it sleep on the end of the bed
・Even now, after your dog, Neith, has grown to full size, she still sleeps at the end of your bed (you know exactly when she jumps up and when she leaves because the bed moves...significantly)
・When days seem especially difficult for Genya, you like to leave little notes around the house, reminder her of all the things you love about her
・She likes to wake up before you and move the hair from your face and just watch you sleep
・Isn’t the best at cooking, so you usually take up that job. But she does bake pretty well. Very good at making tea cake
・Knows a lot about healing so you have a lot of herbs, spices, flowers, vegetables that aren’t for eating per say, but for when someone is sick or wounded
・Genya hated mirrors for a while, until you helped her get over the change in her appearance. You helped her on the road to confidence and self love.
・You’re both still involved in helping the Grisha so you see Zoya, Nikolai, Tolya, Tamar etc
・Genya doesn’t really like having people at the house though. It’s her sanctuary where there are no reminders of The Darkling or the nichevoya
𝐌𝐚𝐥
・Wants a simple life
・Doesn’t care for anything fancy, so you’d be the one to arrange everything
・I can see him as a farmer
・Out in the country, living off the land, but never taking too much and giving back
・We know from the books that he ends up running the orphanage with Alina, living a simple life. Looking after kids who need a home - and I think he would do that whether he was with Alina or not (and in this case...obviously not)
・He would be content with a slow life with you
・But he also wants to be of use to the community; to give back
・So you spend your days finding jobs for people who need them - with the help of Nikolai. You do the paper work while Mal meets the people and waits with them until a horse and carriage arrive
・You also have a huge vegetable garden that you allow the community to use as they please
・In thanks they give you something; knitted blanket, baked bread etc
・You have cows, goats, sheep and horses
・There are stable hands that tend to the horses. Usually the young people from the village (both boys and girls alike)
・The milk isn’t just for you and Mal but you go into town and give it to the people who need it most
・You don’t live far from the village. In fact you can see your neighbours just by looking out the window. They may look far, but really it’s only a ten minute walk
・You also teach people how to read and write
・Mal is absolutely head over heels in love with you
・Always makes sure you feel protected and safe
・Is actually very sensitive and feels things deeply. That’s why sometimes he has to take time to process his emotions alone
𝐙𝐨𝐲𝐚
・We know that Zoya is destined for greatness, hence she would end up living in a castle
・But if not a castle than a quaint chateu will do
・Is a stickler for mess
“There is no reason for there to be so much untidyness!”
・Has a lot of pictures/drawings/paintings of her family up around your home
・She always needs the bed to be made every day; if you’re the last to get out of bed than you have to make it
・You see a different side to Zoya; yes a softer side but also the undone, sloppy version of her. She actually didn’t let you see her like that until a month into living together
・If you snore she makes you sleep on the couch
・No. pets. She’s the one who wears the pants in this relationship and her decision is final
・Until you start feeding an old cranky cat who doesn’t stray far from your home. You name him, but keep him a secret and sneak him inside when Zoya is away
・She pretends not to notice and lets you have your hidden pet
・Although you’d think there would be servant or maids, that’s not the case. You and Zoya split the chores equally; she doesn’t want another person touching her things
・She actually colour co-ordinates her clothes; they’re in colour order and when she’s especially stressed she’ll do the same for yours
・When clothes are folded, they have to be folded neatly-
・Is a very, very good cook. She makes these pastries with goats cheese inside that are to die for
・Has a vanity with ridiculous amounts of make up. When she has a bit to drink she always wants to give you a makeover
・Takes her coffee and tea very strong
“What’s the point of polluting it with milk and sugar?”
・Is the last to fall asleep and the first to wake, but she stays in bed for 20 minutes because she likes being so close to you
・Whenever guests come over she is the perfect hostess. But if they overstay their welcome she won’t hesitate to tell them it’s time to leave
𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫
・IS SO DRAMATIC WHEN GETTING READY
“This outfit worked better in my head”
・Wanted to have multiple mirrors in the bedroom so he could “see himself at all angles” but you told him “the fuck we are”
・He relented ... not without whining
・But Jesper’s clothes do end up EVERYWHERE
・He’s awful at picking up after himself in the clothing department
・But he does keep the bathroom really clean ???
・Even if it’s shaving or after a bathe, he’ll make sure it’s exactly how he found it
・Hates weird smells so he sprays perfume everywhere
・Liked the thought of living in the city to be close to the rest of the crows, so you accepted
・But you made him promise not to do anymore gambling -
・Your home is like an escape for Jesper
・Likes to go shopping with you. He likes picking out things so that you can match (you’re against it at first but ... also submit to it)\
・He always knows how to make you laugh, so whenever he forgets to do a chore he can wiggle his way out of it
・Will do all the grocery shopping and any errands you don’t want to do
・Also loves candles, especially scented ones but has been banned from having them burning unless you’re home too ...
・Moves around a lot in his sleep and has whacked you a few times
・Misses you whenever either of you are away. Keeps a piece of your clothing to smell
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠
・Although he spends a lot of time at the Little Palace, he wanted a place where it was just you and him. Where he wouldn’t be disturbed by questions or problems.
・A lot of his focus is on his plans, but he keeps maps and the like all in one room
・He wants to keep the bedroom for ... bedroom activities. As well as all the other rooms for their proper uses
・Aleksander doesn’t want his ambitions to hinder your domestic life
・He hates overhead lighting
・Prefers candles or lamps
・Always buys you new clothes, new shoes, new accessories etc. Wants you to have the best of the best
・And he gets headaches very easily so you have tinctures and remedies on hand as well as around the house
・He prefers the quiet, and too much noise overwhelms him
・Pets aren’t really his thing ... maybe a bird though, but it wouldn’t have to make much noise
・He does love horses though. And would spend hours on them if he could. Just galloping away, far from his troubles.
・Has a maid that comes and cleans the house
・The only time you’ve seen him truly peaceful is in sleep, but that’s only when the nightmares haven’t started
・He wakes up a lot during the night and doesn’t want to wake you. But you’ve told him whenever that happens he’s more than allowed to wake you up. Being in your arms help him go back to sleep
・100% lets you steal the blankets, without ever complaining
・He’s more likely to remember things than you are, so he makes/buys you a calender and writes down everything you’d need to remember
𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐚
・Isn’t very tidy. There are a LOT of food crumbs (especially in the bed)
・Her hair is actually very long, she just keeps it up and out of the way, so you get to see Nina with her long hair down
・But you also find a lot of Nina’s hair ... everywhere
・She does like when you give her head scratches - a lot of golden retriever energy
・You’ve actually been collecting it to prove to her how much she sheds
・Is always hungry and asks if you want to get food nearly every hour and a half
・She’s not that bad of a cook, but you aren’t much better. So a lot of your food is bought rather than made
・Always makes sure you’ve had something to eat though, especially after a long day or after a big gig with the crows
・You, Nina, and Inej have a close friendship; so Inej likes to ... appear ... in your house
・Most of the time it’s because of an injury. So you keep your storages stocked up just in case.
・But other times it’s for a sleep over! Eating, all sleeping in the loungeroom, telling each other stories and secrets
・You invite Jesper and Wylan aswell... and have asked Kaz but he always declines. Well actually he doesn’t even decline he just doesn’t say anything or show up
・Is a heavy sleeper when you’re in the house. But when she’s alone she can barely sleep
・Always kisses you when you walk through the door and before you leave. It’s become a ritual and if it isn’t done then it’s bad luck
・Learns your little quirks. Like if you like your sandwiches cut diagonally or straight
・Nina is very romantic
・She loves going on little dates with you. And always makes sure you have time for a date. At least once a month. Even if it’s just going out to eat and then taking a walk underneath the night sky

“What’s going on?”
oh nothing much, just thinking about Jesper Fahey growing up with a Zemeni accent that twangs constantly into thick Kaelish but once he moves across to Ketterdam his accent weakens over time but if you listen close on certain words there’s still a very noticeable affleck within his tone and then once Colm arrives in Ketterdam with his soft Kaelish accent something in his mind pulls him back and he can’t help the way his vowels curl in a way they have forgotten in the last several years and after Colm leaves with the money for the farm Jesper almost fights to keep the escaping tendrils of the voice his parents passed onto him

Kiss her you fool - Jesper Fahey
Warnings: mentions of violence, x femreader, I finished writing this at four in the morning and added it to the queue without thinking. Someone send help.
AN: Very loosely based on the song 'Kiss her you fool' by Kids that fly.
Tumblr media
Jesper was usually one for throwing himself in the deep end. He liked to abide by the 'You only live once' approach, pursuing all that he thought worth risking, and all he thought worth fighting for. There was something about chasing feelings, however, that left Jesper uncertain in his approach. If it was his emotions toward the tables, Kruge, or a good gunfight, Jesper found it easy to decide where he intended to go. With true matters of the heart, however, Jesper had to admit it was difficult to find his feet.
He was good at flirting with the mindless stranger until he dropped, good at chasing those in which he found interest. But there was a little pest of a thing that he had yet to tame, an infestation of a four-letter word that he did not know how to approach.
So, Jesper had a problem, and that problem was that he quite possibly loved you, in something of a non-platonic way. So far, he had found many an excuse to be by your side, many a reason to linger in your presence and drop hints, though none of which you seemed to catch. He had done his fair share of flirting with you, though, Jesper feared he had cried wolf too many times, his continuous flirtations with you since you met now having become something of a joke rather than a representative of serious feelings. He cursed himself for his charm. He cursed himself for the lips of which could not stop themselves from sweet-talking anything that he passed. To put it simply Jesper didn't know what to do.
The night was cold in Ketterdam, the sky a canvas of harsh black as if the paint used was born from coal. Clouds covered the sky above, though, were so thick and inky themselves they could hardly be distinguished, and Jesper was headed to the Crow Club, where he hoped to find you. He had originally found himself heading toward one of the back alleys at which he liked to practice his aim, intending to spill out his feelings in a flurry of bullets against glass bottles. It was clear now, that he had changed his mind, boots crushing the stones beneath his feet as he came to the end of his journey, doors of the Crow Club before him. What had brought him here was the thought that perhaps he could tell you how he felt, though the doors to the club, now looming like a threat before him, made Jesper second guess.
He loved the place, but the thought of confessing something he had never before felt to you, was a terrifying scenario. Jesper had been in many a fight, hands thrown at him, bullets barely missing his lanky frame, and upon occasion the rare blast of an explosion that left his ears to ring. Yet, somehow, telling you how he felt seemed a lot more of a challenge.
The club was loud, bustling with the messy folk that dared to enter and throw away what was left of their lives in the hopes they could win back something better. Jesper was in fact one of those people, so he had no right to judge, and he didn't.
You weren't often at the Crow Club, only making an appearance at the place if requested by Kaz Brekker or one of your other acquaintances. You had told Jesper once, that you weren't fond of watching temptation consume people whole, and thus never liked to be in such a place if you could help it. So, you spent most of your free time wandering the streets or lounging in your room at the Slat, but as Jesper had yet to find you anywhere, the Crow Club was his last resort. Perhaps he was just telling himself this so that he could make his way there and gamble away his problems, and his feelings, though such things never seemed to work. More often than not he left the tables with more trouble than he started with, and a lot more emotions to account for.
There seemed to be more people inside than usual, but maybe it was Jesper's mind exaggerating the number of bodies in the club, due to the fact he was looking for someone in particular. Jesper had only one face in mind, that being yours. Pushing his way through the people was a difficulty particularly when there were so many games of chance occurring around him in which he was dying to participate.
Just as Jesper found himself willing to give in, he saw you on the other side of the club, talking to someone he couldn't see, which of course was most likely Inej. The lights in the Crow Club were dim and yellow, casting something of an unappealing glow upon everything the light could touch. Dust circled with it, adding to how unattractive the club tended to be. Despite all this Jesper still found the breath leaving him at the sight of you, the smallest of smiles that tinged your lips as you spoke, the shine of your eyes reflected in lighting that should have been repulsive. Yet somehow when you stood beneath it, he found it wonderful.
Plastering on his signature grin, Jesper let his feet carry him to you, hoping that today would be the day he had the guts to spill exactly how he felt. By the time he reached you Inej was gone, no trace of the Suli girl to be seen, and you turned so abruptly that he almost bumped straight into you. He felt ridiculous, the jolt of electricity that seemed to run through him at your smile almost unbearable. It was the kind of adrenaline he craved to chase on a round at the tables or a job gone wrong with the dregs. Yet it was a much safer kind of dose.
"My fair lady" Jesper allowed himself to wink at you, following the action with a swift bow as though you were a queen. You might as well have been in the way you ruled Jesper's thoughts.
"Good evening Jes".
Jesper loved it when you called him that, though he had never brought it up to you out of fear you might stop. There was something about the nickname coming from your lips alone that seemed to jumpstart his heart.
He watched as you began to walk by him then, coming to the realization that grinning at you like that of a goofy dog, was not sufficient for conversation.
"Where are you headed?" It was all Jesper could come up with to ask, already making a move to follow you, coming into a rhythm of walking by your side.
"The Slat." You responded without so much as looking his way, focused on finding your way through the crowd of gamblers without difficulty. Jesper, though, he hated to admit such things, found it hard not to take this to heart. It was stupid to do so and he knew as much, but with a heart as big as his, of which he was willing to hand to you on a silver platter, he was a lost cause for such things.
"Would you be interested in..." Jesper trailed off, unable to think of an offer to make.
It was then that you turned to him, but with his mind empty of thought, he wished you hadn't. "Yes, Jesper. I would love to".
You spoke with a genuineness not often found in the trap of a place that was the barrel and it took a moment for your words to register in Jesper's mind. When they did, however, he found himself grinning beyond control.
-
Jesper had no plan. He remembered coming up with something of one on his way to the Crow Club where step one had been to find you, but now that this task was accomplished Jesper realized he had yet to come up with step two.
As of now, he was walking the darkened streets of Ketterdam with you in silence; Something Jesper could hardly bear. Though Jesper had not curated a plan, he knew well enough that this was not how he intended his night to go. Perhaps it was a hopeless romantic part of him, though he wondered how he had kept that piece of him alive in a place such as Ketterdam where nearly everything dies, but Jesper had seen his night going differently. Somehow, he had believed that he would have the courage to tell you exactly what he was feeling, lay it out like the cards he was so fond of, and hope that what he felt was reciprocated. Now as his feet crushed the gravel and his jacket blew in the lightest of breezes, he wondered how he had ever imagined himself doing so.
"What exactly did I get myself into?" Your voice rings against the night air, a sound that Jesper is grateful for in breaking the silence.
"I'm not sure what you mean." He finds the corner of his mouth twitching with the threat of a smile that he can never seem to prevent. He knows what you're asking of him but leading along the conversation just seems more fun.
"What exactly was the offer you were about to make me before I agreed without so much as hearing it?" You loop your arm through his as you speak, the grin that Jesper was trying to hide pouring out over his features at the contact. If it was possible, Jesper would have loved you more.
"Can I be honest with you, Y/N?" trying to hide the caution in his voice comes as something of a difficulty, and as if on cue all words leave his brain as you nod you're head. He has nothing to say, his big brave moment of confession is gone. The speech he ran through in his mind as he walked with you in silence had abandoned him, replaced by the rambling chaotic thoughts that held residence most often in Jesper's mind.
"I don't know what I was going to offer you in the Crow Club, I just couldn't think of anything to say". The answer is honest, and he wants to say more but thinks the better of it. He couldn't think of anything to say then, and he can't think of anything now.
You smile, quiet chuckle leaving your lips, but nothing more. Once again you fall into silence, all but for the sound of your feet on the gravel and the low breaths that leave both you and Jesper as you walk.
-
Days later and Jesper is still cursing himself for not taking his shot that night. You were right there with him in the not-so-beautiful streets of the barrel, yet he couldn't find the words to say. It was someone by the name of Nina Zenik, however, who suggested to Jesper, that perhaps he didn't need words at all.
"I would have thought you'd be better at this by now" the voice of the Grisha girl was the thing to snap Jesper out of one of his many brooding moments, though he doesn't look up.
"Better at what exactly?" Currently, Jesper was swishing around the drink in his cup, no doubt looking like a hopelessly disappointed puppy, and he continues to do so without so much as turning around.
"Flirting, expressing feelings, romance" Nina pauses, and even though he can't see her, Jesper can sense the way she lifts her shoulder in a shrug before continuing. "You know, all the good stuff".
"I am fabulous at flirting" Jesper frowns at his drink before placing the cup on the table with a sigh. He doesn't move as Nina sits down beside him at the bar. He had no idea how she found him in the first place, let alone why she would want to. This wasn't somewhere Nina could often be seen and the only guess he had as to why she would appear in such a place, was that she was looking for him.
"You look awfully sad, I'm guessing it's because you can't get up the guts to pursue the girl of your dreams" There is a teasing tone to Nina's voice and Jesper finds some comfort in it, pushing his drink over to her in hopes that it can be money not wasted.
"Oh, I'm pursuing her, but I'm failing".
"Honey, I know" Nina's lips hold a sympathetic smile, and Jesper can't help but chuckle at the comment. He doesn't question how Nina knows about his feelings for you, she is something of an expert at romance after all.
"I've tried to tell her Nina, but my words are traitors" Jesper can't help but rest his forehead upon the top of the bar, no doubt an unsanitary activity. He was too tired to care and frustrated with himself beyond measure.
"Jesper, have you heard of the concept show not tell?" Nina's voice is genuine in questioning and Jesper raises his head just enough to look at her.
"How does this apply to the struggle that is my life?"
Nina rolls her eyes, the action causing Jesper to frown. "Don't you think it would be so much easier to show her how you feel instead of trying to tell her? It's not hard to make a grand gesture in a place like the barrel".
Jesper thinks this over, disagreeing entirely with Nina's train of logical ideas. "The barrel doesn't have so much as a flower for me to give her".
Despite this, Jesper has to admit that showing instead of telling seems a hell of a lot easier considering Jesper's many failed attempts at using his words. Still, it seems more complex than Nina tends to imply.
Nina heaves a sigh worthy of a thousand men back from a day’s work, before looking Jesper over carefully. "Do you want me to simplify this even more than I already have?" She seems to put emphasis on the 'already' pushing the idea that Jesper's brain is working at a much slower pace than it should be.
Ignoring this, Jesper nods. "Please do".
Nina sighs again, though smiling, and pushes Jesper's drink back to him as if to say that he will need it. "Kiss her you fool".
-
It felt like Deja vu as Jesper found himself walking toward the Crow Club, hoping to find you there amongst the groups of hopeless people. He had once again ventured everywhere else to find you, only to come up empty with any trace of your presence. It was late in the day, the sun only just high enough and bright enough behind the clouds to cast a white glow against the streets, and Jesper found himself rushing toward the gambling house full of inspiration provided by none other than Nina Zenik.
His feet found their way into a run, not wanting to lose the confidence he found himself holding before he made it to you. It was not uncommon for people to be seen racing through the streets of the barrel, those that did most commonly running from someone wishing them dead. Jesper was racing toward his destination for an entirely different reason, not that the people of the barrel would know.
When he finally made it to the doors of the Crow Club, he found himself out of breath, chest heaving and aching with that of much consumed cold air. His lungs burned and his heart pounded like that of a judge's gavel beating out the verdict of a trial long-awaited to end. Just as Jesper thought his breath was caught, his eyes landed upon you discussing something with one of the dealers at a table right in the centre of the club. The air in his lungs was gone again, though he didn't plan to squander any more time.
Jesper only had one chance, his confidence bound to die in the next few minutes, so it was now or never. As you finished your conversation with the dealer Jesper found himself halfway across the club in seconds, bringing up all the courage he could find to consume him. He wasted no time once he got to you, your face one of surprise as he spun you to face him before pressing his lips to yours.
It lasted a few seconds at most, though Jesper couldn't deny it felt good to finally kiss you, the weight of something he had wanted to do for so long, finally off his shoulders. Still running high on the adrenaline of it all, Jesper couldn't register the true panic swelling within him that you had in fact, not kissed him back. His mind all but roared with the thought of what he had just done and how he had done it, eyes scanning your face for any signs of how you felt. You stood there staring at him for what seemed to be an eternity, though it couldn't have been more than a few seconds at most before you pulled him back down to kiss you again, this time kissing him back.
Jesper was well aware of the people surrounding the both of you and had no doubts that Kaz would bring you both to his office later to discuss how public displays of affection make the customers feel uncomfortable and lonely. But for now, Jesper couldn't care less. Your lips were on his, and he was pulling you closer than you had ever been before. He would have to thank Nina later for her sound advice, but for now, he wanted to savour every piece of this moment. The fact that he was finally kissing you and you were kissing him back said it all. One kiss was a thousand words in one gesture, and he would never forget it.

do you guys ever think about jesper dressing up in mercher black to go with wylan to mercher stuff, but he's like doing it in the most jesper way possible? like he's got his tie all out and he's cinched the waist of his coat, or he's wearing like a corset over top of his button up. then you know of course he's got the most extravagant ass jewelry on.
(side note: so mad they didn't let us see jesper with earrings in the show. let jesper wear earrings 2024)
i imagine his philosophy is "if you're going to make me wear black tie attire, i'm going to add some flair to it." i just know this man treats merchant council meetings like fashion week. and yk what he looks good doing it too.
