SEX EDUCATION S4 *SPOILERS AHEAD*
Because I just binged the whole thing and I indeed cannot get past not commenting on it.
Spoilers begin from here on…
Let me just say that… I am disappointed with this season. And kinda in general (the entire Cavendish part felt so forced, I really missed seeing more of the old characters and the old setting and I wish other endings were happier, too), but obviously as a Jeankob shipper, that Jean storyline left me with a knot in my stomach.
I know things definitely didn’t seem promising from whatever glimpse we could get beforehand, but this was just so loose and forced and empty I could cry.
I immediately assumed they maybe could not get Mikael Persbrandt to do S4, because this storyline just makes absolutely no sense to me otherwise. If this was intended all along as is, then it is complete bullshit.
They literally built up this couple from S1 onward and made them struggle so much, while simultaneously letting us know how much they love one another, I was 100% convinced that in the very end they would get their happy ending no matter what. Love just had to win for once. And what actually happened seemed as if they just picked up all there ever was and dismissed it completely, tearing it apart.
This only makes sense to me if they had to “fix it” last minute and write Jakob out, because Mikael would not be there to do it. Because explain to me three seasons of chemistry and growth, explain to me all the S3 moments (especially the S3!), everyone indicating that Jean and Jakob love one another, the therapist, Maureen’s “Jakob adores you”, Ruby’s “you’re a good loking couple”, then the treehouse (I cannot believe they had the nerve to shit on that this season, calling it “creepy”), I thought the “you didn’t finish the treehouse” bit was there almost as a guarantee that he will indeed finish it in the future along with his promise to Otis “I’m not going anywhere”. The way Ola named the baby Joy, the Jean Jakob Joy - are you kidding me? The way Jean was so sure about Jakob being the father from the VERY beginning - “but he’s had a vasectomy”, “it seemed fated”, agreeing to the dna test without a single question, being surprised when reading the actual result, probably being able to CALCULATE as a smart woman and also, I think she literally kept the baby, because it was meant to be her and Jakob’s, because she loved the man, I’m sure she wouldn’t keep it if she doubted it was his, oh and also… I assume she definitely used protection with all her one night stands as a sex therapist, but I always assumed she stopped using it with Jakob, because they were an exclusive couple and she trusted the vasectomy. It seems literally impossible to me that she would not doubt it even once.
So, I was certain there would be some games around this paternity plot, maybe make us believe Jakob is not the father, but then something would happen and it would be revealed as a mistake or something. Then Jean and Jakob would both have “done wrong” in some way, she cheated in the past and then he left her over the dna test - they’d finally be kinda “equal” in hurting one another. And maybe realize that despite it all, they still love one another deeply and they have to leave the past behind and make it work.
And I cannot believe that instead of that we just got a very loose storyline about the baby daddy, no real explanation, just some brief crap “95% sure” and that ending of “a part of me always knew it wasn’t his, but” - I am sorry, but the Jean I knew from previous seasons would never even go to Jakob if she had even a glimpse of a doubt. She struggled telling him in the first place. So, making Dan the baby daddy in the end just felt so forced and disappointing, while mentioning Jakob only briefly + the way Jean was already unhappy for the majority of her screen time, it was sad to watch. I enjoyed some parts with Jean and her sister and getting to know more about their past etc., but all in all, her story this season was just depressing and this to me is anything but a happy ending. It’s not “finishing strong and hard”. It’s “I’m gonna pretend there’s no S4”.
I will however forever be grateful to the creator for giving us this couple, I have rooted for them from the very beginning and it is crushing to know that this is it, I am deeply sad about this ending and I think I’m going to need some happy fanfics to make it better or some past season rewatches. Because I cannot accept this. It feels like we’ve been left with absolutely nothing, robbed of it all.
So, to conclude: in my head, SexEd ends with S3 and Jeankob’s story wraps up with Jakob attending the therapy and deciding to trust again, being there for Jean at birth, Jean surviving the birth, there’s no fucking DNA test, just both of them reuniting afterwards, talking it through and forgiving one another and they make. it. work. Because they deserve it. And they live out their love, while raising their daughter.
So, with all due respect… today is a very bittersweet day. And I wish it were different.

SEX EDUCATION FINAL SEASON: If There Was Orgasm, Then I Missed It.... 🍆💦🍑🍌👅🍌🍒🔥😏
The final season was good. It was not great. It was not everything I wanted it to be. It would’ve been a satisfying enough season if it had not been the last. And I acknowledge that it’s difficult to write a satisfying final season to such a popular, ground-breaking show. That said, here are few thoughts on the final season of “Sex Education”. Some came. Most didn't. Not Moordale: It took guts to do away with the old school and transplant the characters into a new environment. This was an interesting experiment which centred what had previously been marginalised and drove the progressive politics of the show further forward than they perhaps could’ve done in their old, more traditional, more repressed surroundings. (I liked that Otis and Maeve revisted Moordale Secondary tho). All the new characters were great, but then this show has always done a great job of finding interesting actors that seem to bring a level of freshness to their roles. Well done to the casting director. Props for the popular kids being two trans cuties who are having sex and issues in their sex life. Seeing Eric in his queer element was great. There was better disability inclusion, but the writing felt a little clunky and preachy at times, as this show is wont. And obviously we lost a few characters in the shuffle. Lily was the one I missed most. She would have loved Cavendish.
Aimee and Ruby: In terms of the young cast, the most satisfying storylines for me were Aimee’s and Ruby’s. When Aimee and Isaac began to connect, I was like: Yes, go there, do THAT. Maeve coming round in the end and realising that they're family was nice. Loved Aimee getting closure with her jeans thru art. Also liked the further fleshing out of Ruby’s backstory and her journey towards gaining popularity through being kind(er).
Eric: My least fave storyline was Eric’s whole religious epiphany thing. I liked that he found a fellow christian with whom he could share his conflicted feelings about being both queer and god-loving, but I’m not into organised religion or religion of any kind really (as is my right after being raised in it). I don’t believe in god so I don’t believe in divine signs. I don’t think they broke the reality of the show as such, but they were a bit obtuse and boring. I think when Eric spoke in church, his mum should’ve said she loved him as he is, his sisters (who've been supportive in the past) should have done the same, and they should have all left the church together. I think them all coming to the fundraiser later was super trite. It looked like a hasty way to wrap up that storyline after Eric left to rescue Cal. I also think that religions in general have to do way more than make placating noises, so having Eric enter into one was not my idea of a happy ending for him.
I think a better storyline for Eric, based on his history of being pulled in different directions by attractions to more than one person, would have been to discover polyamory. We had one polyamorous couple in the mix this season but it was mentioned once and they appeared together maybe twice. I think it would have been more in tune with the show for Eric to realise that traditional monogamy didn’t suit him and start seeking partners that would celebrate him in exploring ethical non-monogamy. Then we could have had an inside look at how that works for poly peeps, how people navigate less traditional sex and relationship models, what comes up for them mentally, emotionally, sexually, socially etc. In my opinion, the religion stuff just closes down possibility for this character, puts him in a box that the show admits is problematic. I would have preferred to see him open up to more possibility than any church can provide.
Adam and Fam: I liked the whole move into horses thing, liked that he became a teacher like his dad. It felt a little not-fleshed-out tho. It felt like the start of a new life for him, but just the start, with a long way still to go, which is kind of fine. That character does have a lot to learn and heal and these things take time. It would’ve been good to see him interact with some kids, maybe see how he treats a young boy differently to his father (maybe horse girl coulda had a son?). I’m not entirely sure about rehabilitating bullies/abusive parents. In my experience, it doesn’t happen but I recognise that this show is working with ideals, with the question: “what if we did sex and relationships better?” As such, I think they did a beautiful job of reconnecting father and son. It helps that both actors are so good at playing awkward masculinity. One awkward hug does not solve years of abuse and neglect but it was a start, I suppose. Horse girl was nice enough. When Adam admitted to being bisexual, I kinda wanted her to say: “Oh yeah, me too.” Because otherwise, she was just kinda there, emblematic of possibility. Adam should’ve moved into the farmhouse as a boarder, and Maureen should have moved some new boyfriend in. The parents should NOT have got back together. Hard nope. Some relationships end, and this was one that should’ve. Maureen should have continued her sexual exploration, maybe got into burlesque or BDSM. The dad should have had a hot affair with the art teacher (who should’ve been less of a ridiculous middle-aged man-eating woman cliche), or better yet, the home ec teacher. Bring food into sex.
Cal: Gender dysphoria distress is not something I have personal experience with so I would be interested to hear what people who do thought of this storyline. I was up for it but, if I’m honest, I can’t say I’m any more enlightened on what it feels like or what I should do for someone in similar circumstances. Though I like them, I think this is in part due to a lack of range in the actor playing Cal. I can say that the scene where they are by the ravine feeling suicidal meant a lot to me personally, cos I do have experience with that. (Jackson shoulda figured out where they were sooner tho).
Jackson: Didn’t love Jackson or Viv’s storylines. Jackson’s whole history was established way back and I NEVER appreciate when shows walk that back and go: “oh no it actually happened this way.” His whole swimming thing was cos Hannah Waddingham’s character was anxious about them having a connection but if he is the result of a previous relationship and her partner was already pregnant when they met then that changes that whole dynamic. Her insecurity makes more sense, is more intense, if having a child is a decision his mums take on together. Great to explore a scenario in which Jackson seeks out his biological roots but I don’t think he needed the extra trauma of two lying mums and an uncaring biological father. They should’ve stuck with the original context, there was enough shit there to sort out. Nice to see HWad’s in the mix, even if she only had two lines (but she’s super busy and big now so that’s probs why). I notice that all the previous acrimony between the mums has disappeared. So no therapy. No Jackson dealing with divorce. And no Hannah Waddingham having an affair with Gillian Anderson. So yeah, pretty disappointing all round.
Viv: Friendships are important but I kinda thought Jackson and Viv would’ve made a good couple…? Viv’s storyline was good for a teachable moment on coercion but not much else. Also I don’t think the boyfriend needed to grab her so hard. It doesn’t need to be hard to be scary and wrong.
Maeve: I liked how they brought Maeve home then sent her back, which was absolutely the right thing for her. Dan Levy was great and, again, the scene where she confronts him about being gate-keepery meant a lot to me personally, as a low-SES student at University. The stuff with the brother was all v. well-written and acted, although they seemed to forget about lil sis pretty quickly. Liked everyone showing up for the funeral, esp. the old Moordale teachers. The song was a def. highlight of the season. We also got some closure for Maeve/Isaac and Eric/Adam. Otis was, of course, a dick throughout but awkward lovable dickhead is kinda his brand. The climactic sex scene with Otis and Maeve was okay. Top marks for playing Jeff Buckley who was a big part of my high school experience. I wasn't as weirded out by it as I thought I might be (mostly cos I remember Asa Butterfeild from "Ashes to Ashes"). But jeez, for a show on sex, they don’t give a lot of time to foreplay, do they? IMPORTANT PSA for het dudes of all ages: DO NOT expect to be inside a girl/woman 10 seconds after kissing her. Maeve interacting with Jean was another highlight, but I would’ve liked a final call/text between Otis and Maeve, rather than leaving them both staring out windows thinking of the other. (On the other hand, totally get people who were for an Otis/Ruby endgame).
Jean: Okay, so I like this show as a whole but one of the major reasons I watch is for The Gillian. Jean Milburn is another in a long line of her iconic characters. So on the positive side: I actually liked the sister storyline. I have a sister and that felt appropriately intimate/infuriating. And they finally cast someone who actually could conceivably be related to Gillian Anderson (unlike “The Great”, “Crisis” and even Melissa in “The X Files”). GA has very unusual facial features but these two looked alike, got the dynamic right, and the backstory illuminated Jean a little more for us. I kinda missed overconfident, fashionable Jean, but hey, when you have Gillian Anderson, you’re gonna use her, right? I don’t know postpartum depression but I know depression and that felt real to me. Beautiful job, as always from GA. The relationship with Otis followed a similar rocky trajectory to other seasons and was as well-played as always by both, even if it yielded little in the way of growth. It did annoy me that Otis was like: “we need help” but then he barely acknowledged Joy when they were in the same room. My brother has just had a baby and whenever anyone walks in the room, it is ALL ABOUT the baby: talking to the baby, talking about the baby, holding the baby, playing with the baby…. So I was like: Otis! Pick up the baby! Cuddle your sister! (Being ignored in favour of the baby could also have heightened mum’s PPD. And how about modelling a young man participating, even minimally, in child-rearing, dear show??). The radio/podcast stuff was fine. As an Aussie, I was delighted to see Hannah Gadsby in the mix. People may not know this but she is a comedian, not an actor, so I loved seeing her do such a great job. Loved seeing her interact with Gillian so much, and looking fab too. Gillian also looked gorgeous, even while falling apart, and more so as her medication started to kick in. I say this just cos I like seeing women onscreen looking their age.
The biggest disappointment here was the disappearance of Jakob and the disintegration of that relationship (which had a lot more going for it than Adam’s parents). I don’t know if the actor was unavailable or if this was just the direction they chose but I missed both Jakob and Ola. If they were going to write them out tho, I do think it was better to have them gone before the show began. I didn’t wanna see that breakdown. They’d already introduced some elements into this relationship that weren’t necessary, imo. I don’t think they needed to make Jakob’s dead wife unfaithful. I think illness, death, single dadhood and late-in-life love is quite enough to deal with, esp. considering the limited screen time they had. I also don’t think they needed the overly hasty move-in, which seemed to me like a totally rookie mistake for a sex and relationships therapist to make. Of course that was not going to work! Otis and Ola being needlessly stroppy was likewise unhelpful for what could have been a joyous, sexy mature-aged romance. They placed all these unnecessary stresses on this relationship in order to force it to fail, the final stress being the paternity of Jean’s child, which, if they hadn’t introduced Jakob’s dead wife’s unfaithfulness might not have been such a huge deal, he might have been able to stick around and raise a child not biologically his (he already had two of those). I personally didn’t like what it did to his character either, since he initially seemed like such an open, honest, easy, considerate, responsible, mature, big-hearted kind of man. Was this their idea of giving him layers? Why did they have to turn the ONE good grown man in the show into a petty, bitter, suspicious little coward?
There was so much potential in the Jean/Jakob relationship and the problem with introducing so many new elements in a final season is that you risk not wrapping up some of the core elements you began with. Like Eric, Jean’s final season doesn’t really match her trajectory throughout the series. When we met her, she was having a lovely time having lots of casual sex but no relationships. Which is fine, except that her reasons for doing so were more to do with hurt and avoidance than with pure sexual expression and honest personal preference. She was still reacting to the disintegration of her marriage and the infidelity/promiscuity of her ex-husband (so to have her left for supposed infidelity/promiscuity seems again needlessly cruel). She was afraid of further heartbreak and, thru her relationship with Jakob, began to overcome that fear. While the PPD and Joanne storylines were solid, illuminating and enjoyable, they did not contribute to resolving the core issue Jean initially presented with. With Jakob, Jean was starting to ask herself: ‘’how do I trust again after being devastated by the infidelity of my son’s father?”, “how do I let go when I can’t control every outcome, aspect and possibility?”, “how do I live with someone again after living alone for so long?” Oddly enough separate residences never seemed to occur to anyone on this super progressive, groundbreaking show. Or you know, Ola could have gone off to college and Otis found some opportunity in America, leaving Jean and Jakob to try again in a different context, with different skills and a different spirit. (But personally I would have gone with separate residences for a time).
You could say that Jean’s issues were partially addressed in her relationship with Jo but we all know that familial and intimate relationships are different. Related but different. Jean’s issue was how to combine intimacy, trust, sex, romance and relationship. That can’t be resolved with a sister or a son. It can only be resolved with a romantic/sexual/life partner. Even if Jakob left for a while, I would have liked to see him come back (I wasn’t sure whether he would but it looked increasingly unlikely as the season continued). Otis or Jo could have called him. Or he coulda heard Jean on the radio. In the end, it looked like Jo and Motorcycle Man were going to be a thing so they coulda made a v. weird parenting foursome (which also would’ve helped alleviate Jean’s depression and workload! Look at that!). Now how’s that for an alternative family model? Why have one parent when you can have four (esp. when two of you have already raised kids)? That would have been great for Jean and Jakob (who get a little more time to themselves) and for Jo and Motorcycle Man (who may need some more responsible parents around). It would be good for Ola (who NAMED Joy, let’s not forget) and her sister, and also for Joy to have some loving siblings, since her big bro won’t pick her up and cuddle her.

i'm a sad shipper today
i'm sad that oliver and loretta might break up in season 3 of omitb. i mean this is as of episode 8. we don't even know if oliver is alive after d heart attack 2, and if loretta goes to jail but i doubt it. i feel they're gonna be fine but they might break up in d end. or how about if loretta goes to LA, they can still have a long distance relationship and visit one another. idk. meryl can pop up once in d next season.
next topic is for sex education
sex education season 4 spoilers
i'm sad for jean and jakob, and also for otis and maeve. after 4 seasons of build up, that's it, huh? maybe it's a realistic ending. something that normally happens irl idk. but i want happy things in d shows i watch and i thought sex education was a happy ending kind of show.
and i absolutely want maeve to go back to america and be a successful writer. i thought her storyline would be a high school semester in america and then she goes to university in another city in england or the uk. but i understand how her family life traumatized her to d point that she just wants to move to another country. believe me, i know, cos that's my life experience too and i'm hoping to leave my home country someday.
i just thought that she can be a writer in england and still be with otis idk.

sex education season 4 spoilers (yes the whole thing, not only a few episodes) ahead
so i just watched the whole season in one day and i just want to say how fucked up it is that neither jakob and jean nor otis and maeve really have a happy ending (yes, with otis and maeve there is still possibility in the future). (it is a very special kind of fucked up that motorbike man is the dad; like he literally called jean 'mum' in like s1ep1)
i love that once in television motherhood isn't only pretty. it is hard and heartbreaking and exhausting and more than not it is romanticised by filmmakers. and yes, jean is not her usual self, but she has fucking postnatal depression (saw someone on tiktok say that they don't like that storyline for her; like i'm sure she doesn't either). also, gillian is so fucking beautiful and talented.
i love that otis' and eric's friendship somehow ends in the same way it begin in the series, with them playing smash bros - while not being static; they acknowledge their differences and their ignorance towards those.
i love that aimee works through the trauma of her assault and i love the scene at the bus stop where she burns the pants and makes photos. so much love for aimee in general.
i love eric's arc. because getting queerness and religion into one person is really hard and i'm sure many can really identify with that situation. at every age too. i know i can and i know somewhere some eighty-year-old can too.
also love my babe maeve for shutting her teacher up.
AND i love, love, love that we finally got a jean/maeve moment where jean gives some motherly advice!!!!!! needed this!
i love so much more ab this: the topic of body dysphoria, t4t-relationship representation, mention of toxic positivity as well as ableism, mention of childhood trauma w special mention to the storyline w jean's sister, etc.
yeah, just my unfiltered, rambled, not-thought-to-the-end opinion.
also joy is a really cute baby in the later episodes when she's not crying all the time :)

i literally just finished shadow and bone and i am dutch so i get to shit on the dutch usage and pronunciation now hehehe >:D
i kept track of all names and words and stuff that i thought were dutch(-inspired) based on the word itself or context, then divided them into 3 categories: "yup, thats correct", "aaaaaalmost", and "wtf is this." (pronunciation will be thoroughly criticized later.)
(disclaimer i have only read a small part of SoC due to ✨life✨ so this is mostly based on the show)
yup, thats correct
the following words/names are completely believable, both in context and the name itself, + why:
tante Heleen - tante = aunt and Heleen is a very Dutch name; Dreesen is a real last name; Edam is a real place (their cheese is pretty good); Rozenstraat is a very generic and common street name; Edyck is the fancy old spelling of Edijk, which is probably either a place or someones name; Rietveld is a real last name; stroopwafels are real and oh so very good; Appelbroek, aka apple bottom jeans (or apple pants ig), could probably be a place name; Hiemstra is probably a real last name; Saskia is a very Dutch name; Lij could be a real place; Kooperom sounds so much like a real restaurant i actually would want to eat there now.
aaaaaalmost
these seem like theyre actually dutch names at first glance, but its just a little... wrong. off. (again, + why.)
Ketterdam, as ketter means heretic (probably why its named that tbf), would never be a real place name. it sounds very weird; "goedemorgen, fantomen" was pronounced so wrong i had to take another listen to pick up what he was saying, + wed use "spoken" instead of "fantomen", especially in the context of surprise survivors; Jakob is fine, but Hertzoon would be spelled Hertszoon. even then, its still weird - -szoon was only used with the fathers name, and "hert" means deer, which isnt really a name; Henrik Van Poel would be correct if Van was spelled without a capital. its a "tussenvoegsel", an infix, which behaves a certain way in dutch, including not being capitalized when the whole name is written out; (B/D)uysberg (dont remember exactly) is almost correct, but idk, something feels just a little off about it, especially if it was Buysberg, which is what i think it was; Kaz would be spelled with an s and maybe a C depending on the full name, and Brekker is right but just doesnt feel like a real last name.
wtf is this.
these arent dutch. these will never be dutch. no. (once again, + why.)
Kerch just doesnt sound or feel dutch, even when pronounced the dutch way (which it isnt in the show); stadwatch is a combo of dutch and english, which wed never do like this - just call it the stadswacht or the city watch, both sound better; Sturmhond is a combo of German and Dutch, make it Stormhond and id believe it (but i guess it was made up by a Ravkan, so its excusable); kruge is just not it.
alright. time to learn some dutch pronunciation and spelling rules.
all letters are pronounced, except, depending on context, for final -n.
g/ch = /x/ or /ɣ/ (make an s or z sound, roll your tongue back until its in the same spot you pronounce k), except for loan words.
ee = /eː/, or "ay".
y/ij/ei = /ɛi̯/ - closest thing i can think of is New Zealand "face" or Scottish "write". /aɪ/ ("I") would be acceptable.
uy/ui = /œy/, like finnish äy. nothing similar in English.
oo = /oː/, "oh".
oe = /u/, "oo" as in "loo" (not as in "book")
the rest is either right or depends on context.
"goedemorgen, fantomen". oh boy.
okay, so far we got /ɣud[e]m[o]rɣ[e] f[a]nt[o]m[e]/, where the letters in brackets are not yet explained and not necessarily obvious in pronunciation. from what i can recall, only one of them was pronounced correctly.
but lets start with stress patterns in dutch. the stress will always fall on the root of any given word, unless its a relatively recent loan word. in "goedemorgen", "morgen" is the root with the stress falling on "mor". they got this part right. in "fantomen" the root is "fantoom" with the stress falling on "toom". theres also secondary stress: "goedemorgen" is a compound of "goed" and "morgen", so it falls on "goe". in "fantomen", -en marks plural, and therefore secondary stress is on the other syllable of the root word: "fan".
if "e" isnt stressed in a word, its almost always /ə/ (e in "burden"). in this case, no e is stressed, so its all /ə/.
the first "o" is followed by multiple consonants, so its /ɔ/ (o in RP "sorry").
the second "o" is the shortened form of "oo".
"a" followed by multiple consonants, so its not the short form of "aa", and pronounced /ɑ/ (generic american english first a in "always")
this makes our sentence pronounced as /ˌɣudəˈmɔrɣə(n) ˌfɑnˈtoːmə(n)/.

► HEADCANONS/FUN FACTS
the name ‘erik magnus lehnsherr’ was an identity he took on after the death of his daughter anya. after using his powers for the first time, the kgb was sent after him and it was them that prevented him from saving anya from a burning building. because of his powers, and because he killed the men holding him back from saving his daughter, he was forced to run and take on a new name. he lived as erik lehnsherr most of his life, but has decided to use his birth name once again. he will always be magneto, but he doesn’t have to hide anymore. his parents named him max— now he chooses to remember and honor a small part of his past.
before completely dedicating his life to the mutant cause, he was a nazi hunter
max is good at crafting, and actually enjoys it. as a child, he was taught how to make jewelry and took a special liking to creating necklaces (which he often gifted magda). he tries to make time for his creativity, but being who he is.. well, it’s difficult.
wanda maximoff is not his biological daughter, as it turns out. but they have come a long way together. she will always be his daughter. even while his relationship with wanda’s brother peitro is strained, max still sees him as his son. it’s up to pietro to determine how he feels about their connection.
jean grey is also like a daughter to him.
max is an atheist. while his jewish upbringing remains an important part of his past and identity, his experiences in the camps changed him.
► WANTED CONNECTIONS
charles xavier. they’ve known each other a long, long time and have spent most of it at odds. but max has always respected and even admired him— even if they have distinct beliefs and methods. more recently, they have been able to work together for the future of mutants.

DON’T BULLSHIT ME - the analysis
Why I think there’s no fucking way Joy wouldn’t be Jakob’s and why I’m almost betting they had to write Mikael out and that’s why we got that bullshit, lacking-in-context story:
1. Jean can be a silly woman, but she is not dumb. I cannot imagine a sex therapist who wouldn’t be highly aware of these things and also as someone who has already been pregnant once in her life, to miscalculate things so horridly as in not to know who the father of her child is.
2. Jean was very outspoken about protection, there is a scene from S2 where she is attending the SexEd class at Otis’ school and she tells the students “remember, it is always your right to say no” as in response to a case where someone insists on not using protection.
3. According to these words and the fact that she is a sex therapist with a previously quite sexually active lifestyle, I am 100% sure she has always used protection, no exception.
4. Yes, Jean slept with both Jakob and Dan on that very same day which is evocative, but as previously mentioned, I am sure she’s used a condom, both with Dan and Jakob, because even if she and Jakob liked one another, I don’t think you just tell a person that you’ve had a vasectomy when you’re about to have sex with them for the first time and even if, they were still strangers, I don’t think that’d convince her not to use it, at least in terms of STD’s etc. I think it’s highly unlikely she got pregnant on that day by either of them.
5. Despite Jean kissing Remi, there was no one else in terms of sex after her and Jakob started dating. She was exclusive with Jakob.
6. I believe as Jean and Jakob became exclusive and things got serious, I think that’s when Jakob probably mentioned his vasectomy to Jean. It’s no secret that a lot of couples prefer to have sex without a condom, so the fact that they were a serious couple and that the vasectomy should theoretically keep them “safe” (haha), was probably enough of a reason to go au naturelle.
7. A lot of women actually get pregnant despite the man having had the vasectomy. You can find a ton of such stories, also, the doctor herself had said to Jean “stranger things have happened”. Yes, condoms can break, but if you’ve been cream-pied by your bf god knows how many times, despite the vasectomy, that’s a lot of shots. Pun intended.
8. While the timeline is not thoroughly explained, according to the story, S1 begins at the start of the school year and S2 is supposed to be around spring term. Jean gives birth on October 25th in S3, which is post-summer break. Jean is not due for 8 weeks at the time, so her due date should be sometime in December, meaning, Jean got pregnant sometime in March or early spring. (I think S1 and S2 contain some more dates to confirm this, a bill at Maeve’s trailer and some other stuff that kinda support bits of the timeframe.)
9. I highly doubt that the first season stretched from September and all the way up to the next spring, I think S2 actually started during the spring term and there was a time jump, so I personally think the sex with Dan was too far away for him to even be considered the father (of course, they can imply whatever they want, but according to logic - again, seems unlikely).
10. I think the time jump could have had Jean and Jakob dating in secret anywhere from a month to a couple of months, now, while we cannot be 100% sure of this, I still think a certain amount of time had passed in between.
11. Jean says she found out she was pregnant “quite late on”, but has also stated “I really didn’t know what I was going to do”, probably implying she still had the time to decide, this means she wasn’t pregnant for longer than 12 weeks. It is usually up until the 12th week mark where you have the time to decide to terminate the pregnancy. In my opinion, she must have found out somewhere in between 8-10 weeks, considering she called it “late”.
12. She had already broken up with Jakob when she found out, it could’ve been merely days or a good week after that, maybe more, but who knows, it does however give us about an extra week into the pregnancy and we can consider that when assuming how long they could’ve been a couple for beforehand.
13. The moment Jean found out, she was obviously surprised “but that’s impossible” and right away blurts out “but he’s had a vasectomy”. She right away thought of Jakob and has even expressed her surprise, due to his vasectomy, but it didn’t make her question if the baby might be someone else’s. Again, the doctor confirmed getting pregnant that way is not that unlikely.
14. Since Jean had already broken up with Jakob at the time and he had made it clear, that he doesn’t want to reconcile, Jean was quite free to decide about her pregnancy. If she ever doubted that the baby wasn’t Jakob’s, I see absolutely no reason why she would feel forced to keep it and turn her life upside down. I think Jean knowingly kept that baby, because she knew it was her and Jakob’s and there was the inevitable emotional attachment to it, so it would probably be hard for her to terminate the pregnancy and she even says it later on how one of the reasons was that “it just seemed fated”.
15. During the entire S3 there are too many lines that support Jean’s indeed very sure and convinced of Jakob being the father: Otis’ “mom, you have to tell him” - I’m pretty sure you don’t lie to your own son about who the father is, “you’ve impregnated me”, “I’m 48 and he’s had a vasectomy” so confirming in front of a therapist, that even to her it seemed impossible, yet, still, it happened, then the way she remained so sure when Jakob was beginning to grow doubtful “don’t be ridiculous”, agreeing to that DNA test without even a glimpse of a doubt and being completely shocked by the results later on. All of these to me are not behaviors of someone who “a part of me always knew she wasn’t his”, but quite the contrary.
16. The fact that Jean, despite loving Jakob, couldn’t even go back to confront him and has, for example, only decided to make it known that she “wanted to try again” later on at the therapist’s, just goes to show how vulnerable she felt after the heartbreak, so no wonder she waited a couple of months before even gathering the courage to tell Jakob, she was probably terrified and upon doing it, she actually tried to play it cool at first like “I only want you to be involved if it’s something that you would like”. So, I don’t think she’d go into it lightly and lie about it if she had any doubts about the paternity, just to use Jakob. Even the therapist asked her if she decided to keep the baby, because she still wanted to be with Jakob, to which she replied “absolutely not” and I really think that she’d probably rather just ghost him forever if she knew the baby wasn’t his as opposed to trapping him into being the father. Jean is the kind of person who really prefers to run away from her feelings at times like these.
If you actually managed to read the entire thing, thank you, you are a champ.
Yes, I know this fucking analysis won’t change S4 and they have made their choice, all I’m trying to say is, that I am suspicious of this all and I really think there was something about not being able to cast Mikael Persbrandt, that have made them change the story last minute, because it just felt so loose and if this was actually intended all this time, then all of these things from before simply don’t make sense. It puts their entire arc to question.
All of these are also the reason why I always believed that the DNA thing was just something to play with them some more and have never doubted Jakob being Joy’s father, not even for a moment.

⚠️sex education season 3 spoilers ahead⚠️
(also don't read this if you're a maeve x otis stan because you will not like what you see)
I can't believe we were taunted with a couple as iconic as otis and ruby and maeve and isaac just for them to go oh big surprise-- it was maeve and otis all along whoop dee doo 😒 like seriously they were just so bland after all of the options we were presented with. And i LOVED them in season 1 and 2, but after 3 i just feel like they had both changed so much it didn't even feel right anymore like it felt like they literally spent so much time developing two different love stories for them both, like actually really building them, giving us ruby opening up her life to otis and even saying i love you?? Giving us that BEAUTIFUL tender scene with isaac and maeve?? just to toss them to the side and go whoops it was the most predictable couple all along! What the fuck. I used to love them but now i think i might...actually...be...a Maeve x otis anti???? 😳
And don't even get me started on Eric and Adam i literally can't believe that they couldn't let them be happy for just ONE season. Like just one??? One season?? All this strife and hardship to get together and we can't have one season?? Son of a bitch
