Whumpcember, day 1: Fever

Characters: Rowan= caretaker, Adam= whumpee, Grayson= coworker/friend, Darren= Boss/mentor

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rowan noticed something was wrong, the moment Adam walked through the door of their shared dorm room.

It wasn't unusual for Adam to be exhausted after a long shift, but this seemed different. Rowan observed how his eyes seemed to be looking into space, his breathing came in short, shallow breaths, and his movements were slow. Even his "Oh, hey," seemed slow and slurred.

But Rowan kept his concerns to himself for now. No need to make Adam stress more about being a 'burden'. He'd just have to keep a close eye on his roommate for the time being.

"What do you mean 'oh, hey'? I told you this morning that I'd be back early..." Rowan tested.

Adam stared blankly at him for a few moments, "You did?"

"Yeah. Whatever, how was work?"

Adam set his bag down and took his shoes off. Finally snapping out of his trance, "I'm so sorry Rowan, I must've forgotten. You're not mad, right?"

"Of course I'm not. You're alright. Anything interesting with work?" He repeated.

"Oh, right," Adam shuffled his way to the chair across from Rowan and sat, "work was alright I guess. Pretty slow, which was nice. Grayson was in a good mood. Wouldn't say why though..."

"Interesting. Glad work was okay. You want dinner?"

"Sorry, but I'm not very hungry... I just wanna sleep right now."

"What have you eaten today?"

A pause

"Milk...?"

“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

Adam smiled shyly and looked down at his feet.

“Sooo. What do you want?”

“Oh, um… idunno,” he shrugged.

“If you don’t pick something, I’m just gonna make some soup,” Rowan’s tone had become unintentionally harsh and blunt. He hadn’t noticed until he saw the wetness of Adam’s eyes when they made eye contact again. He had been trying to keep the worry out of his voice but ended up over compensating.

“Th- sure, uh that sounds good. I’m sorry,” great, Rowan thought as Adam stumbled over his words. Now he’s sick and upset.

“Adam you really don’t have anything to be sorry for. I’m the one who should be sorry for talking to you like that. I didn’t mean to sound so rude,” he explained

Adam cleared his throat, “No, I was being frustrating to you… soup is good. I just don’t want you to go through the effort of making me food if I’m only going to eat half of it.”

“We can save any leftovers for tomorrow.”

Adam nodded. Rowan got up and went to the kitchen to start the soup.

While Rowan was out of the room, Adam sighed and slouched in the chair. His head was throbbing and his hands were almost as shaky as they were sweaty. He thanked what ever god or deity might be watching that Rowan hadn’t noticed. He closed his eyes and laid his head against the back of the chair.

Several minutes went by like that. Eventually he must’ve fallen asleep, because he was jolted awake by a gentle hand on his sweaty forehead. Tears welled in his eyes and he struggled to calm his breathing as he realized who it was. And he was safe. He was home. No one could hurt him. He was safe.

“I’m so sorry, Adam,” Rowan sat on the floor next to Adam and held his trembling hand, “it’s just me. You’re okay. I didn’t mean to scare you…”

Adam began nodding slowly as he caught his breath, watching Rowan rub small, soothing circles around the back of his hand with his thumb.

“Just wanted to let you know food is ready. You feeling alright?” Rowan cocked his head slightly.

Adam’s eyes widened, “Uhh, I …yeah. I’m fine. Wh-why?” His eyes darted around.

Rowan recognized these signs of unease and anxiety. He really didn’t want cause Adam discomfort but ignoring his illness so far had only proved to let it get worse.

“Adam, I’m gonna check you for a fever. I’m sure it’s nothing but I just want to be safe, okay?”

Adam felt his breathing pick up again, “No, uh that’s f-fine Rowan. I, ngh I’m fine, I sw-swear!” He was suppressing coughs and tears alike.

Poor thing.

Rowan grabbed the thermometer from the drawer of the couches side table, “Addy. Hey, I’m just checking, okay? I don’t want you to suffer if there’s something I can do to help,” he grabbed Adam’s sweaty, shaking hand and tried making eye contact

Adam on the other hand, kept his eyes down, looking at his feet.

“Hey. I want your permission Adam. You have a choice, okay? Can I check your temperature? It’s the new one so I won’t have to touch your forehead with it. That okay? It’s alright if you don’t want to though.”

Adam took a deep breath. In and out. He nodded.

As Rowan held the thermometer up to Adam’s forehead waiting for the beep, he wondered what happened to his friend before they met that could make him so nervous about being sick. He knew it wasn’t the thermometer he was scared of. And based on his past actions and mannerisms, it didn't seem to be sickness itself... So it must be either the acknowledgement or other people knowing that scared him. But why-?

The beep pulled him out of his thoughts. He held it close to his eyes, realizing he had left his glasses upstairs.

Hard to tell. But either way it was just as he thought.

He looked at Adam, finally meeting his eyes.

“I’m sorry. Is it bad?” Adam’s hand was still shaking in Rowan’s as his other rubbed his topaz eye and sniffed. His hazel eye held Rowan’s gaze.

“Not too bad. But... you do have a fever…” Rowan was trying to be careful with his wording. When Adam looked away and shrunk back, he stood up, “tell ya what; I’ll dish up the soup — should just be warm by now — and I’ll call Darren and tell him that you’re sick and ask for a few days off for you. And once I’m done with that, I’ll grab us some pillows and blankets and you’ll pick the movie tonight. How does that sound? And you can say no.”

Adam was silent for a few moments, lost in thought. Eventually, he looked back up at Rowan, his freckled cheeks flushed a peachy color and his mismatched eyes still slightly teary.

“You promise it won’t be an issue. I just don’t want-“ he was cut off by a coughing fit.

After a moment, he cleared his throat and continued, “I really don’t want to be a burden and I don’t want to cause more work for you, Darren, or anyone else.”

“I promise, Adam,” Rowan was ecstatic when Adam hadn’t argued, “I’ll go dish us up and call Darren!”

As he headed for the kitchen, Rowan realized the lack of arguing from his roommate might actually not be very good…

Is it that bad? He wondered

He hoped not. He’d just have to keep a close eye on him for now. Because right now, all he could do is try to wait it out. No point in stressing out over a fever and minor cold.

Adam stayed in that position for a few moments after Rowan left. Thinking. Hoping. Wishing.

Thinking about how grateful he was to Rowan for taking care of him, hoping Rowan had meant his promise and would keep it, and wishing he could express his gratitude and happiness.

After a short while, he peeled himself off the soft chair and went to his room. He'd be fast. Rowan wouldn't even notice he was gone. He was just changing his shirt.

He breathed a sigh of relief when he came back out and heard Rowan still in the kitchen, on the phone.

He clumsily and slowly made his way to the sofa. Grabbed the remote and sat down as he scrolled through the 'recommended' tab. He was very bad at making decisions. The whole concept still seemed sort of alien to him.

Eventually, when he heard Rowan say "Thank you! I'll let him know!", followed by the clanking of bowls, Adam hurriedly picked the first thing that caught his eye. After selecting it, he realized it was a cheesy romcom.

So his eyes had chosen violence when they were attracted to the bright colors. He'd suffer then. Unless Rowan didn't like this.

"Oooh, that's a good one! A nice comfort movie. Oh and Darren gave you two days off," Assuming you don't get worse. He left that last part out.

"Really? You like it? I've never seen it..."

"Phew, you're in for a mess. It's an oldie. So basically it's so bad that it's good. I hope you like it," Rowan set the bowls on the center table and went to the linen closet, grabbing a few of the fluffiest blankets that they had.

He sat down next to Adam and handed him a blanket.

"Thanks," Adam hit play, wrapped himself in the blanket, and grabbed a bowl of soup

After some time, Rowan felt something on his shoulder. When he looked down, he smiled.

Adam had fallen asleep, leaning his head on Rowan. It was the first time Rowan felt that Adam trusted him fully. It was the best feeling in the world. It made him feel warmer than the soup had.

He grabbed the mostly full soup bowl from Adam's lap and set it on the table. He turned the tv volume down slightly, and eventually, he too fell asleep...

Rowan sleepily lifted his head and rubbed his eyes with his right hand, his left arm still stuck between his roommate's body and his own.

By the looks of it, the romcom Adam had put on had ended quite some time ago. The sun was already rising through the window across the room. He grabbed his phone and looked at the time.

6:32 AM

What time had he fallen asleep? Adam had only been home no more than an hour... then it couldn't have been any later than 9:00 PM.

He glanced at Adam, still asleep on his shoulder, and frowned.

The calm, peaceful, trusting look that he had the night before, when had first fallen asleep was gone. Replaced by furrowed brows, a clenched jaw, and a single tear in the corner of his eye, waiting for its time to drip down his cheek.

Slowly and carefully, Rowan moved his left arm up and around to rest on Adam's far shoulder, and like this, Rowan held his friend close.

He wondered what was wrong...

Was it just a fever dream?

Was he in pain?

Rowan began gently rubbing Adam's arm, trying to wake but not startle him.

"addy?" his voice was barely audible. Definitely not loud enough to wake even the shallowest of sleepers, "hey, Adam," he tried again, only slightly louder.

This time, Adam jolted awake and pulled away from Rowan. He wiped the tear from his eye and sweat from his forehead.

"Sorry, Adam... you okay?"

Adam jumped slightly and blinked at Rowan, as if just realizing he was there, "oh," he cleared his throat, "yeah. 'm fine."

"Nightmare?"

"Uh, n-no. Why?" Adam sniffed.

"Oh. Did I wake you for no reason, then? I'm so sorry."

"Don' be, i's alrigh'," he sniffed again, "...do you know if we have any kleenex?" he glanced around the room.

"Yeah, in the linen closet. I'll grab some," Rowan stood and walked across the room, to the open closet. He must have forgotten to close it last night. He dug around on the top shelf, realizing how badly it needed to be cleaned out and organized- a job that could wait until another day- and grabbed the last box of tissues. He turned around and saw Adam stretching his arms out.

Rowan giggled at this, "I'm not gonna toss it to you. The last thing we need right now is you getting a corner in your eye."

Adam frowned and dropped his hands, sniffing again.

Rowan opened the box, handed him a tissue, and set the rest on the center table.

Adam blew his nose and got up, heading into the kitchen.

"Anything else I can do for you?" Rowan asked kindly.

"No, fanks. 'm alrigh'."

He sounded like if death had been warmed up in a microwave and then stuffed into a dryer just for the fun of it.

"Okay. Just let me know if that changes, alright? I don't have work until noon."

"Kay."

Adam disappeared into the kitchen. Rowan heard the clumsy opening and closing of cupboards. What in the world was that delusional, half-awake sickie doing?

He shook his head and went into the kitchen after him to see what was happening.

"I can' find the trash..." Adam admitted when Rowan rounded the corner, almost as if reading his mind.

Rowan pointed to the bin next the fridge. Right next to Adam. Right where it had always been.

"Oh. Oops. Sor-"

He was cut off by an awful coughing fit, dropping the tissue, which Rowan could now see had blood in it.

Rowan ran to his friend's side as he coughed and gagged and gasped for air. He sat Adam down, grabbed a glass from the clean dishwasher and filled it with water from the tap. He knelt down next to Adam, holding the water in one hand and brushing hair out of Adam's face with the other.

Adam reached for the glass with trembling hands and Rowan helped him lift it to his mouth. He took a sip and immediately choked on it. He couldn't breathe. He had stopped coughing, but only because he couldn't breathe. There was sweat dripping down his temples, tears in his eyes, and a look of desperation on his face.

"Shit! Adam, hey, hey... oh god," Rowan was panicking. He quickly set the cup off to the side and wrapped his arms gently around his friend, pulling him close and holding him.

Adam leaned into him and finally coughed up the water onto the floor, thankfully not getting any on Rowan or himself.

Now, he was left gasping for air and wheezing in Rowan's arms.

Rowan breathed a sigh of relief, "Christ, Adam... are you okay? You scared me there."

Adam nodded, "..s'rry," he muttered weakly into Rowan's shoulder.

"Adam, you have nothing to be sorry for, okay?"

He nodded again, now pulling away from Rowan's grasp.

And Rowan let him. He knew Adam didn't like physical touch, and he always did his best to respect Adam and his boundaries, despite Rowan's struggle with it. No matter how hard he tried, he'd occasionally forget, as physical touch was always something he had found comfort in. Though he never understood, and he didn't always remember, Rowan always did his best.

And Adam knew that. He couldn't deny the fact that he was slowly growing used to it and even warming up to the occasional, gentle touches. Only Rowan's touches though.

He still flinched away when anyone else even tried holding his hand or patting him on the back. But whether or not Rowan knew it, every day he was actively helping Adam get better and feel more normal and more human. And for that, Adam was endlessly thankful for. Even if he might never be able to express it.

Adam glanced at the cup of water, at the tissue, and then at Rowan. Rowan looked concerned. Adam hated that. Great. He was being a burden. He quickly looked away, grabbed the bloodied tissue, shakily stood up and stumbled toward the trash can.

Rowan stood up quickly and reached a hand out to try and help Adam, but he dodged the hand, flinched away. Rowan retracted it.

"Do you need help?"

"No," he dropped the tissue in the bin and as he turned back around, he gagged. In an instant, Adam was back over the trash, now heaving and coughing. He was shaking again and now leaning on the fridge.

Rowan was immediately by his side. He kept his hands to himself this time but was prepared to help if he needed to.

After a few moments, a mix of bile, blood, and even the soup from the previous night all came up, burning Adam's throat and pouring into the garbage.

Adam coughed a few times after it finally ended and dropped to his knees, shaking and now crying.

He couldn't be a burden, he couldn't be pathetic, he couldn't be weak and he couldn't be sick.

If he was any of those things, then he'd be abandoned again. Rowan would leave without a second thought. Adam would be alone and forgotten all over again. He couldn't let that happen. He couldn't be a sick, pathetic burden.

And yet he was. He was all of those things. And for some reason, Rowan was still right by his side. Still pretending to care. But why?

Rowan picked up the water again and sat next to Adam, offering it to him.

Adam took it and drank it as slowly as he could, not wanting to choke again.

When he finished, he had gathered himself and looked at Rowan. They held eye contact for a moment, Rowan reached a hand out and Adam watched as Rowan slowly placed it on his shoulder. Adam looked back up and into Rowan's oak wood eyes. After another moment, Adam not only leaned into the touch but went farther by slumping into Rowan.

Rowan wrapped his arms around Adam and held him. They stayed like this for several minutes, until Adam finally caught his breath and his whole body relaxed into Rowan's.

"Are you okay?"

"..."

"Addy?"

"...I don't know," it was barely audible. But it was honest. More honest and more vulnerable than he had ever been with Rowan.

That was the last thing Adam was able to get out as his consciousness faded
