Anxiety swirling in his head creating scenarios in his head that could never happen. There as no way for Rio to travel back in time and unsay the words, to rebottle the anger that had spilled out of him. The sting of the IV in his arm brought him back to his body. As Jay walked through the door he shifted in the bed sitting up a little higher with a small smile. "Glad you made it." He had fully thought he would be here alone so the fact that he actually showed up was amazing. "sorry to make you come all this way"

Dark Academia book idea:

An average young man wants to learn the art of Something Boring, and moves from his midwestern life to the east coast. While there, he hears about these mysterious parties going on late at night in the basement of the high-class dormitory across from his shitty apartment. The guests are never invited — they simply come dressed in elegant dress-ware (I’m talking bejeweled gowns, white tuxedos, and beautiful masks and jewelry).

No one’s ever been officially invited until our Narrator, of course. He’s also the only person to ever meet the mysterious host, a beautiful man (a Henry Winter-type for all you TSH fans) whom the Narrator describes homoerotically for like two pages. The Host continues to remain a mystery, though he’s obviously obsessed with our Narrator for a (probably gay) reason we don’t know about yet.

Our Narrator sleeps around, but he can’t stop thinking about that Host. He meets with the Host every night at those mysterious parties, only to find out the Host is in love with a Beautiful, Tragic Girl who’s dating a Horrid, Misogynistic Man who treats her terribly (a Bunny Corcoran-type).

Long story short, our Narrator has to help his boyfriend new friend, The Host, win the Tragic Girl, only resulting in a couple ghastly murders, lots of drugs, and a mourning Narrator.

Does this story sound familiar? Yeah? Well, change the university setting to 1920’s New York, and that’s just the plot of The Great Gatsby.

My point? The Great Gatsby IS a Dark Academia read and you guys are hella pretentious for pretending it’s not.

The last week was one forged in the deepest pit of hell meant only to knock Rio off whatever high house he was riding. Finding out he was the child of god to just turn on the fact that he was, without a doubt, the weakest of the pack. It was humbling in a way that Rio had never had to face in all twenty-five years of life. He sighed as he took a small swig of whatever drink had been handed to him. The defeat he faced after all the help he was given in the Thunderdome had definitely shifted his mood. Spotting Jay from the corner of his eye was when the thoughts started to bubble in his mind. If anyone could understand what he was facing or have anything that would actually be helpful for him, it would be the child of Nyx. Their parents were so closely aligned but the last shreds of pride that clung to him made it hard for him to take that first step.

The world did like to play cruel jokes and for the next hour, he was aware of where Jay was in any room he entered. Rio swallowed the lump in his throat and walked over to him. "Hey" he spoke as he looked at him "getting control of this darkness shit is hard huh"
