Bullet Train (2022) Review

Should’ve just called this Kill Brad: Vol. 1, just saying.

Plot: Ladybug is an unlucky assassin determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs gone off the rails. Fate, however, may have other plans, as Ladybug's latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe-all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives-on the world's fastest train. The end of the line is just the beginning in this non-stop thrill-ride through modern-day Japan.

With seeing how many stars and cameos appear in this action film, one can really appreciate how far David Leitch has come up in Hollywood and how many connections he’s built, as he started out as Brad Pitt’s stuntman/double (totally did not just Google that) and then became a prolific action filmmaker with the likes of John Wick and Deadpool 2 under his belt. There’s no argument that Leitch has a knack for choreographing and filming exciting visually-striking action sequences, and now Bullet Train might be his maddest caper yet. As the title implies, the movie is set for the most part on a bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, but the title also works from a metaphorical stand-point, as the film’s frantic hyperactive tempo is befit of a said locomotive’s speed.

There’s no doubt that this is an abundantly ridiculous flick. It’s a bunch of wacky colourful assassins trying to kill one another on a train in the most creative of ways (why wasn’t John Wick invited?) whilst exchanging witty quips of dialogue. Don’t expect any real narrative substance, as this is very much style over substance. There are a lot of visual gags, and very fast paced non-stop action, so it’s all a bit of a chaotic mess, but one that is very enjoyable if you’re willing to go along for the ride. In some ways it reminded me a lil’ of Guy Ritchie, a bit of Tarantino as well as some Robert Rodriguez too, especially with the flashback backstory of Wolf - a Puerto Rican assassin with a grudge.

The entire cast does really well here too. Brad Pitt...I mean c’mon, it’s Brad Pitt. What do you expect? It’s Brad Pitt in a movie, of course he’s great. He gives Ladybug the puppy-dog eyed charm and charisma whilst managing to keep up with the tongue-and cheek joke-heavy script. Gotta love Brad. Michael Shannon is worth mentioning as the main antagonist aptly named White Death, and again, Shannon is prone to playing intimidating creepy bad guys, so no surprises here. Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson play an assassin duo who happen to be twins (you read that right) and them two riffing off one another in Cockney accents never got old. Hiroyuki Sanada brings the expected gravitas and precision to his role as The Elder - an old samurai fighter, and honestly Sanada always brings his A-game. Even in last year’s messy Mortal Kombat movie he managed to make his limited on-screen time epic. The entire cast (and numerous cameos) are all really game here.

In terms of negatives, the film can come off a little too hectic. Its a lot of action and flashing imagery all in one go within a 2 hour span, with many stylish diversions that can be a bit pointless (a backstory for a water bottle especially was a head scratcher) so it is a bit overwhelming, but overall this is a silly and bonkers piece of chaos that offers enough thrills and laughs this summer season. And again, you can never get enough of Brad. Gotta love Brad.

more prosaically: the Shiba building a bunch of bunkers in Rukongai and always being viewed with suspicion by the other Five Great Noble Clans for their charity toward Hollows and Wholes and even the Soul King (a position they originally intended to occupy themselves!!!) and their love of freedom of information and egalitarianism and opposition to hierarchy and classism and their disdain for Soul Society’s organizing principles and what not...

... is exactly in line with the basic conceit of Yoruichi’s organization of Rukongai into a unified political entity under non-coercion using the brand name of the United Nations to shove a stick into the spokes of the reincarnation cycle by preventing the majority of passive deaths (by murder) in Rukongai, thus forcing the Seireitei to take a good long hard look in the mirror and either A. reform, or B. declare war by setting about actively liquidating wholes as Mayuri did in TYBW but on a larger and more persistent scale:

this kind of behavior versus a politically organized Rukongai would not just be random war crimes perpetuated by a metropole on a periphery (imperialism) but an actual aggressive act of war between peers which could be responded to in kind and at scale. it would also be risky to contemplate for Shinigami as 1. Yoruichi team stronk, 2. the Seireitei would be completely surrounded, 3. still weak from TYBW/CFYOW, 4. at strong risk of civil war given most members would not want to engage in random war crimes, 5. the new Central 46 under Nayuri Amakado wants to be nice and reformist and doesn’t want to “send in the tanks” and neither does Captain-Commander Shunsui whom CFYOW explicitly spells out hates the system (and all but suggests he has a plan to slowly bring it down himself)

it is essentially the exact same plot hooks and direction just with different packaging: Crashing Heaven’s Downfall

(I could’ve called Yoruichi’s efforts the Soul Defense Initiative or something instead of invoking the U.N. but co-opting known brands instead of building a new one is just smart marketing and legit everyone knows what the U.N. is and ideally should be even if it routinely falls way short of expectations; for the record, Japan is its third-biggest financial backer and Japanese attitudes toward the U.N., while lower than peers on most questions, are still majority or supermajority positive on major issues, so it would resonate with a bunch of Japanese ghosts living in abject poverty and fear of being murdered by feudal Mad Max sword gangs)

so! you there, from like 16 months ago, anon!

tbh it sometimes feels like you take your muse a *little* too seriously. The bleach narrative doesn't take itself seriously *all* the time and derives humour from it. The metas and the well reasoned headcanons are great but at times they read like you wished Yoruichi was a character in, not a different story, but a different genre.

I’m gonna finally respond now: same genre! same plots! same ideas! same goofy mix of serious and comedy! I just pitch a little more like Deadpool than Kubo and call a spade a spade: Bleach is a cyberpunk setting in ghostly trappings with lots of political commentary and themes. that’s just how it is! I’ll give you another two for free that are unrelated: Shinigami are totally a commentary on Japanese salarymen and office ladies in the ’80s and ’90s, and Ichigo’s despair being Karakura is a commentary on the Lost Decade! you can read a lot into Bleach!

1. What is your idea of perfect happiness? My idea of perfect happiness is being fully contented of what & who you have in life. Removing toxic people and negative shit, seeing the good inspite of experiencing the bad, not hurting or taking someone for granted and being HUMBLE, staying humble no matter what your life status might be.

2. What is your Greatest FEAR? My greatest fear is witnessing my kids get hurt physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, financially etc., when I am no longer around w/them.

3. What is the trait you must deplore in yourself? The traits I most deplore in myself is I am emotionally sensitive & secretive; I tend to over think, worry negatively as always. Breaking promises-not putting my words & plans into actions!!! Not trying hard enough!!! I am GUILLIBLE, one of the reasons why people takes me for granted as much as possible! Over protective when it comes to my kids & yes I spoiled them as much as I can!!!

4. What is your greatest extravagance? Food, Coffee, Tea, Coke Cola Products, Luxury bags (LV, Gucci, Chanel), Gadgets, One Piece Manga Books.

5. What is your current state of mind? My current state of mind is full of REGRETS!!! If I could only take back all the time I fuck up on my overspending.

7. On what occasion do you lie? I try not to lie as much as I can but if I do lie is because I don’t want anyone to get hurt, I rather be the one who gets blame and be in trouble.

Bullet Train: K.I.S.S. and crank the Beyonce

Have y'all ever taken a ride on a bullet train? I've ridden The Superman ride before... (remember that?? Is that still around??) I don't know how fast that is, but when I rode it, I thought I was going to die. It was puke city for some as well. Think about vomit flying at your face at an excessive speed. Then, I went and rode it again :)

Bullet trains can get up to about 250 mph. I'm not sure The Flash can run that fast.

Imagine yourself on any train, and all of a sudden, Brad Pitt boards, and then some of the peeps from the show "Atlanta", then Bad Bunny, then Joey King (which btw how is she only 23 years old? I feel like she's been around forever. She should be at least 35. Vamp? Yeah, I'm onto you, Joey.) and Hiroyuki Sanada (can't make a movie involving Japan and swords without him).

Pretty cool, right?? THEN, you learn that they're all assassins, hellbent on killing each other. Would you even get off of the train, if you could? I wouldn't. That list of characters, being stylish, about to unleash chaos... I'd want to see where this is all going. Now, THAT would make a good ride - If you added actors, playing killers, wreaking havoc, all while you're on some super-fast contraption, and avoiding airborne puke... and other bodily fluids.

YES!

Brad Pitt (who plays "Ladybug") was once a ruthless assassin, but lately has been on some spiritual enlightenment kick. Like he went to a party with Aaron Rodgers and Joe Rogan, took some pills, opened his third eye, and saw Jesus playing video games with Buddha. Now, Ladybug is... well, still an assassin, but all about personal growth, and therapy, and peace, and grace, and gluten-free, and sparkling water, and such. Right off the bat, Brad Pitt is making me chuckle. I loved him in this role.

You might say, "How can you be chuckling when assassins are around, probably doing assassiny things?" There is a lot of murder, and torture, and children being put in danger, and psychopathic devices, yet... yeah, chuckles. There's a scene in which 17 kills are described in detail, and it was a delightful experience. David Leitch (who directed this movie - along with Deadpool 2, John Wick, Hobbs & Shaw, Atomic Blonde... yeah :) has sprinkled his magic all over this film.

I had fun with this movie, but from the looks of Rotten Tomatoes, some others did not:

What do they have to say, you ask?

"filled with chaotic, confusing, almost nonstop violence that becomes tediously boring." (I'm with ya, until the "tediously boring" part. That's like having sexy time with a partner who dresses up like a clown and makes sounds like a duck when they get excited, and you say that you were bored with them in bed. You may call that whatever you'd like, except "boring".)

"Bullet Train keeps getting slowed down by flashbacks to exceptional violence and cutesy phone banter... " (How's that bad? and "slowed down"?!)

"... this comedic thriller spins its wheels without any meaningful dramatic substance beneath the surface spectacle"? (that's what you were looking for? did you even watch the trailer?)

"Bullet Train is shooting nothing but blanks." (Proud of that one are you?)

Look, I'm not the guy who needs everyone think/feel how they think/feel about things (no one likes that guy), but I am genuinely curious how I'm seeing this so differently than these folks. I was expecting a fun, slick movie about assassins on a train, and that's what this is.

You wanted more of a plot? - I mean... while they're killing each other, they all want a certain briefcase - plot enough for me.

I say that simple works best:

"Lord of the Rings" - I liked it, but... it's just 9 hours of a group of hippies trying to destroy a ring.

Simple.

Beyonce's "Renaissance"

Simple. Not knocking it, and I like it, but it's just a forty year old going clubbing and having sex (and lots of it... everywhere:) Again, I like it, but some act like it's Mozart or something.

I recently watched "Nope". People were irritated that I didn't show enough respect to Jordan Peele's "masterpiece"; mad that I didn't get it. No, I got it... is there more? No offense, but the "lesson" there was one that you'd hear on some stoner's podcast. Too much going on for a dull payoff (in my humble opinion). Gotta keep it simple.

Sometimes, you just go down the street for milk and a pack of smokes - that's not an interesting story to be told, BUT if you add assassins to that story, and something about Brad Pitt - please tell me more! I don't care about your core plot, just give me the good stuff. What am I missing?!

Plus, I'D say (humbly) that this film DOES have some depth. not a wow-factor "omg you just blew my mind" type of depth (that I was looking for in "Nope":), but this flick has a lot to do with fate and how our paths connect. When you leave the theatre and start peeling away some of that... it gets fun. But, maybe I was high or something when I went to see this movie, cuz no one else seems to think this :) But, I'M with you, Brad! You and me, buddy! If you make a sequel, I'm down - call me. I really hope this becomes the next "Fast & Furious". I want to see at least 8 more Bullet Trains! Bradchise here we come!

The only issue I had with this movie was its length. It could have been trimmed 30-40mins, but I still enjoyed it.

Grade: a surprising A-

I will take one thing back - you CAN have a lot of action and still be bored. The recent movie "The Gray Man" proved this.

However, that movie took itself way too seriously. "Bullet Train" knows what it is. It's a party where it's loud; really loud (Beyonce is cranked!), and everyone is popping pills and getting sweaty and sexy on the dance floor (the under-sized living room). But, you've gotta be up for that. I get it.

Sometimes, you want a quiet evening at a hipsters crib, with fancy drinks and convo. A party with a couple of Karens around to call the police when they think the party next door needs to turn down the Bey, and be more mature like them. To each their own :)

Phan Cam: A Heroic Dream Festival (Day 1) (Part 3)

Hey, hey, hey, everybody! It’s time for summer’s most loveliest sounds! Welcome to this year’s Dream Festival! This promises to be a special one as we’re doing it here at Avengers Campus in New York City! That’s right, Dream FES is making its American and international debut. Starting in Tokyo, Japan, now we’re doing overseas. To get us more in the scene, our reporter on the inside is backstage right now. Over to you, girl!

>Backstage.

That’s right, I’m here backstage of what promises to be the biggest Dream Festival yet. Not only will we have our usual Idol Units with new song just ready for you, but we’ve got all kinds of acts on the second day from locals to certain parts of the world. And let’s not forget that on the third day, we will have our usual competition to see which Unit will get a music deal and have a full album release ready in time for the Winter Holidays. Joining me here are some fellow reporters: Robbie Robertson and Robert Bauchamp.

Thank you. Arigato.

Merci. I wonder if they’ll do this next year on Luna or in Paris.

Reporter: So, what is your take on Dream FES being here in America?

Mr. Robertson: Well, it’ll be a little different. We’ve had something like this over Christmas, but to see it again here and knowing that this System will be uses in the U.S. will be promise to be something new and great.

Beauchamp: Maybe. But I can imagine some people may not be happy with the System.

Reporter: You mean, because it’s like a magical girl transformation.

Mr. Robertson: You mean with the nudity?

Beauchamp: Pretty much. But I think there will be most people who will like it. But I guess we’ll find out tonight.

Reporter: It sure seems that way. And how do you feel about knowing that on the second day, some people other than the Idol Units will be able to use the System?

Mr. Robertson: Well, I wouldn’t be surprised that some people would love to try it out. They would feel more like actual Idols and magical boys and girls.

Beauchamp: My friends are performing on the second day and they paid to use the System. I think this will be the first time they’re doing something like this.

Reporter: I hope they’ll do great. Last one, what will you be writing about this in your respected media?

Beauchamp: Well, I write for a small tabloid in Luna, but I think they would read about it and might consider using the System there. But I think they would most likely prefer the next Dream Festival to be in Paris.

Mr. Robertson: Well, I might be able to write about this in the Daily Bugle... If my boss will find some room after bashing Spider-Man.

Reporter: (laughing a bit) No doubt about it. He sure has it out. Well, back to you on stage.

>Back on stage.

MC: Thanks, girl. Now, I have a special guest of my own. A real hero... At least I think he is... Are you really a hero?

Maybe. I’m sorta banned from Avengers Campus... But I had to make my Phansite debut while I can. No matter how late it’ll be posted.

MC: (confused) Come again?

Deadpool: Oops! Almost said something that I shouldn’t have. Well, better be off... I think those damn S.H.I.E.L.D. agents spotted me. See ya!

>As quickly as he came, Deadpool vanishes.

MC: (trying to make sense of what just happened) Okay... Moving on. It looks like we’re about to begin as Haruto Mikami comes on stage with his Unit, Sankishi. Mikami has just been made the new head of D-Four Productions after its former head retired. But despite this, Mikami will still perform with Sankishi. So ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the legendary Idol Unit to come all the way here from Japan. Sankishi!

>Everyone cheered as Sankishi comes on stage.

Haruto: Hello, New York!

Susa: Here we are! Dream FES in America!

Ichika: Time to show this nation the magic that we have in store.

Haruto: But don’t think we alone will do this. We have all of our fellow Idol Units to help you see your dreams come true. We have DearDream!

REVIEW | "Deadpool: Samurai" - Vol. 2 [FINALE] | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade

When we last left Deadpool, his journey to Japan brought him to a world of culinary cuisines. While working on his new chimichanga, the Merc with a Mouth found himself stuck in the ultimate shokugeki battle. Fortunately, the key ingredient for the food fight was something that would help Wade Wilson score the ultimate victory! As the celebration commenced, an opportunity of a lifetime to train with the ultimate sushi chef puts him face-to-face with his greatest rival: Yukihira Soma!

…wait, that’s not what happens. Who the hell wrote this?!

Okay, let’s get back on track with Deadpool: Samurai, whose second volume is unfortunately its last. Deadpool, Sakura Spider, and Neiro are dealing with Loki’s thirst to destroy all of Japan. That’s when the trickster sends a fiend known to destroy half of humanity with a snap of his fingers: Thanos! The good news: it’s merely a clone; the bad news: he’s still pretty damn strong!

The battle wages on, as Deadpool swears to avenge the lives of the cast of To Love-Ru and other Shonen Jump series Thanos has destroyed. When Neiro is knocked out, the symbiotic Kage bonds with Wade to take the baddie out. But when that doesn’t work, Deadpool pulls an ace from his sleeve. His name is All Might, and his Smashes would make even the Hulk jealous!
