JanAUary 1: Flower Shop AU.
Tumblr media
Thanks for @eternally-smitten and @bioexorcizm for the prompt!! I couldn't resist 😭🌻
I did both the illustration and the fic! I'm so invested with this AU that I had to do both ( ◜‿◝ ) It's my first time writing long fic so hopefully it's good!
Summary: Jimmy was told by his boss to grab some flowers for the law firm's office party. He was initially reluctant to do it, but once he entered the shop, his life changed.
Word count: 1,261 | Pairing: Jimmy McGill/Abby Cliffwood.
Enjoy! 🧡
Ringing phones, muffled conversations, and occasional pen-clicking noises were no stranger in the bustling law firm called Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill. Professionals in suits passed by here and there, adorning the building with their legal discussions. Some of them were lounging in their shared cubicles, bantering with other colleagues about the activities after work. Amidst them, in a rather cluttered wooden desk, was Jimmy McGill, seemingly busying himself with stacks of paper in front of his eyes, pen tapped against his chin, lost in his own thoughts.
"Hey, Jimmy,"
The voice that called him suddenly broke through his daydream and caught him off guard. He hastily turned around and looked up.
"Hey, Howard," he half-heartedly waved his hand, uninterested. Howard stood in front of him and leaned a bit closer.
"Are you busy?"
"Nah, nah. Just thinking about things." he shrugged, "What's up?"
The blonde smiled, "Well, we're gonna celebrate Christmas in HHM, and I thought decorating the place would be a great idea." he clapped his hands together, "I already ordered some flowers from nearby florist. Why don't you grab it?"
Jimmy furrowed his eyebrows, "What? Why don't you ask Ernesto to do that?"
Howard chuckled, "He's out to grab Chuck's errands, remember? And well, we're currently short-staffed." he patted the brunette's shoulder, "So, please?"
Tumblr media
Stepping out from the building with a sigh, he moved his legs towards the direction Howard had given him on the small paper he hastily made as a map. His blue eyes darted around the street, eyeing on each cars that passed by him while silently cursing on Howard for making his day even harder. The little pebbles on the road seemed to mock him as he continued to navigate the street, and he couldn't help but curse some more under his breath. "Stupid party."
It wasn't long before he spotted the flower shop near the corner. It looked pretty old-fashioned, some sort of a shop you'd see in old magical cartoons. He shrugged, brushing it off by muttering, 'Probably just a coincidence' before approaching the fiction-like store.
Once he stood in front of the door, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "Okay, just a guy buying a flower. Nothing silly." he said to himself. Straightening his suit and letting out a firm sigh, he turned the knob and entered.
"Oh, welcome!"
A sweet voice greeted him from the cashier counter, the melody ringing through his ears. It was so sweet that Jimmy immediately thought he must've entered the wrong shop. Looking up, he was met with a sight that will change his life forever.
He didn't enter the wrong shop.
Well, he didn't expect anything at all, really.
But the girl who just greeted him, Goodness, she was something else.
Her curly hair, her freckles, her golden eyes... They were unbelievable.
He widened his eyes, realizing something bloomed in his chest.
He was captivated.
"Mister?" that soft voice called him again, "Are you okay?"
Blinking in confusion, Jimmy immediately snapped back to reality and cleared his throat, awkwardly straightened his suit and tie, "U—Uh, yeah, I'm okay." he blushed, furiously cursing himself under his breath for getting caught by her, "I—I was just, uh, looking around."
The woman giggled at his nervous smile and extended her hand, "My name is Abby. Abby Cliffwood." she gracefully introduced herself, "If you have anything to ask, please feel free to come to me." and gave him a warm smile before turning around to tend the other flowers.
"Cliffwood." Jimmy whispered her last name. The name itself brought warmth to his heart.
Taking a deep breath, he straightened his suit and cleared his throat, "Hey, Miss Abby."
Abby immediately turned her head, her face looked a bit surprised, but still with her warm smile, "Yes, Mister?"
Jimmy gulped nervously, trying his best to stay calm. "Uh, my name is James McGill. You can call me James if you want. Or, Jimmy." his mind started to scramble, causing him to look like a fool, "Anyway, uh, can you tell me more about this flower?" he nervously pointed at the sunflowers.
Abby's eyes sparkled in delight, "Oh, sunflowers!" she clapped her hands in excitement, "They're my favorite! Sunflowers are bright, cheerful, and warm. They represent love, kindness, and happiness, too! The bright petals are just like sunshine..." she continued to explain, but it soon faded to the background as Jimmy focused his attention to her face. The way her golden eyes sparkled, the way her cheeks flushed... He was lost in them.
Jimmy nodded at her explanation, though his thoughts were elsewhere, "Oh, I see." he hummed absentmindedly.
She turned to him and smiled, "Do you have someone special to give, Mr. McGill— I mean, Mr. Jimmy?"
Hearing her said his name sent shivers down his spine. He shook his head, "Nah. Just bought it for the office party." he lied.
"Really?" she asked, tilting her head slightly to the side, "Are you sure?"
He was taken aback, "Yeah, why?"
Abby smiled, "Nothing. Just asking." she waved her hand, "I mean, I think you have someone to give."
Jimmy frowned, "Why did you say that?"
"Well, if you're really not looking for a gift for a special person, you would've walked away, or just randomly pick one." she replied, pointing out the truth, "But, instead, you asked me about it."
Jimmy felt like an idiot. Of course, she's right.
"I... I guess you're right." he gave her a defeated smile.
She giggled and turned around to arrange the sunflowers, "Don't worry, Mister."
"It's Jimmy."
"Okay, Mister Jimmy."
"No, no. It's just Jimmy." he chuckled, finding her confusion amusingly adorable.
"Jimmy." she corrected herself.
He smiled, satisfied, "Yeah."
She giggled to herself, "Okay then, Jimmy." She then grabbed a bouquet of assorted flowers and handed it to him, which he accepted, "Just flowers for the office party, yes? Or do you want to buy this sunflower too?" she asked, reaching to touch the petals of the sunflower in front of them.
He didn't even hesitate, "I'll take it."
"Oh?" she sounded a bit surprised, but the smile was still on her lips, "So, you have someone to give?"
"Yeah, I have." he smiled, his eyes intently locked with hers.
"Who is it?"
"You."
The moment he said that, she was taken aback. A blush started to appear on her freckled cheeks. She tried her best to cover it by darting her eyes around and hiding her face with her hands, but the red tint on her cheeks was endearingly obvious.
"Mister—" she clumsily stammered.
"Please, call me Jimmy."
She nodded, "Okay, Jimmy." she looked up and shyly smiled at him, "I don't know if I can accept it. I mean, we... we just met."
"And yet, here I am." he leaned in a bit closer to her, "Here to make you smile."
Abby shyly giggled and covered her mouth. Her golden eyes were shining brightly as they were locked on his blue ones.
"Then, I shall be smiling for the rest of the day."
Jimmy couldn't hold back the big smile on his face.
"Yeah, please do."
It was the first time he had fallen in love.
The moment he saw her, he knew she was the one.
After that day, he returned to the flower shop again and again, always bringing something new with him each time.
And each time, she always greeted him with the most beautiful smile.
Her smiles always reminded him of the sunflowers.
They're bright, cheerful, and warm.
Just like her.
His own personal sunflower.

janAUary #1 - record store
ship: dewmav
word count: 1144
summary: maverick pops into dewey's shop to look around. he hopes that he catches their eye instead.
(dew works canonically at a record shop, so why not change up the meetcute -- what if they met at his workplace instead of theirs?)
Tumblr media
He notices them when they walk in, but it's not until they're flicking through the 'New Releases' cart just adjacent to him that he truly notices them.
He can't help it, not when their clothes drape so perfectly over their shoulder, which quickly is exposed by the sweater they're wearing and showcases the mass of freckles that pattern their skin there. Or the way the light hits the top of their head just enough that the bluish hue they've tinted their hair shines deeply in contrast with the brighter tones of their outfit. It didn't help he caught the way their stockings were awfully tight as they scooted down the line of albums.
He's seen them before, many times actually. A frequent visitor, but normally only in the very early parts of the day -- the times where he's only barely half-awake, wandering in fifteen minutes late to his shift anyways, and they're too busy with their head buried in the tracklist of whatever album they'd just bought to pay any semblance of attention as they slink past him holding the door open for them.
He decides that maybe he's looking at them now because he expects a ‘thank you.’ Even if they'd never noticed him before.
And it's not until their gaze slowly rises, head still bowed towards the bin of vinyls that he realizes he's staring.
“Uh. Hi.”
It's when they stand back up, sightline flicking around the shop only to realize how clientele-barren and open it was, that they respond.
“...Hi?”
His head is propped on his hand, leaning over the counter lazily, the other brushing through his hair before rejoining its partner on the glass casing that holds the more valuable records in the store.
“Looking for something specific?”
They shake their head, turning away slightly “Ah, no, not really.”
Dewey raises his voice slightly, craning his neck as he leans just a bit more forward, “Well, if you change your mind, I’ll…Be here.”
They don't respond to him, and in an awkward motion, he turns around, bending down and pretending to inspect the bulk of crates and boxes stored behind the counter. He tries to be anywhere, look anywhere that isn't at them. He wanders from behind the register, slipping down any aisle they're not.
When they say something from the other side of the shelving, he suddenly reappears rather quickly from his makeshift hiding place, popping his head around the corner.
“Huh?”
“Oh, sorry. Just talking to myself.”
“Right. Yeah, okay,” he nods, but continues to peek past the thin barrier between them.
They sigh, “I guess a second opinion isn't the worst thing ever though, if you have one.”
“Dewey Finn, music connoisseur at your service, dear loyal customer.”
“Maverick will do, thanks,” they smile as he approaches.
He bows, making a show of the whole scene before he takes a look at the two albums they've pulled.
“What's on your mind?”
“Been trying to get into some older stuff lately. But I’m not quite sure where to start.”
Dewey nods towards the gray-stained cover of Who's Next.
“No question on that one. Their best album, for sure. You into rock at all?”
“Newer stuff, heavy stuff mostly. I, uh -- I’m in a band, they want me to,” they pause, throwing up air quotes, “Broaden my horizons, or something. Like I don't know most of the classics already.”
“No shit, you play?”
“I mean, for fun. We don't really…Perform a lot.”
“That's fuckin’ awesome, though. I play too,” they share a moment of solidarity, and a smile before Maverick cuts it short, tucking the vinyl under their arm and putting the other back.
“We could…Maybe hang out sometime. For a jam sesh, or something.”
“Maybe,” Mav turns away shyly. They scurry towards the counter, Dewey rushing back just behind them, a little discouraged from the hesitant quasi-rejection.
Their gaze passes him as he rings them out, taking his time as he still tries to make pleasant conversation. They quickly cut him off, reaching out and grabbing at his wrist, in effect stopping him. He looks over at them, baffled, but somehow not upset that their hand was still on him. They gasp.
“Is that the special edition of White Pony?”
He glances back, to the small pile of things lining the hanging shelf behind him, “Uh, yeah.”
Their expression immediately lights up, “You're lying! I -- I've been looking for it for ages!”
“Well,” he scratches at the back of his neck, pulling at the hair there. He doesn't have the heart to tell them it's behind the counter because it's on hold for someone else, “It's um…That's it.”
“How much?”
He shrugs, knowing damn well they won't accept no for an answer, “Dunno if it's up for sale yet --”
Their voice drops low, “I’ll do anything.”
His head snaps back. He swallows the nervous chuckle creeping up his throat and sees the way their expression falls serious.
He looks behind him again. It's definitely his ass if his manager finds out. But…
“Like, maybe even a date?”
Maverick seems confused, at first. Not quite what they'd expected. However, as they look him over again, the lopsided smile he wears, the disheveled outfit, the wild hair, it’s almost endearing. Kind of cute, even.
“Maybe even a date.”
“You're serious?” he tilts his head. He didn't actually expect them to agree -- nor was he going to admit that he probably would have sold the thing to them either way.
But hey, he shot his shot, and he didn't miss, for once.
They stop, think, then fail to cover the giggle that overtakes them, “Sure. Why not?”
When he turns around to grab the vinyl, he pauses, pretends to be rearranging the rest of the shelf for balance, tries to hide the way he's smiling and can't stop. To be fair, he's also trying desperately to think of what to say now; He didn't expect to get this far. The beep of the register draws him back as he finishes cashing them out. When they take the bag from him, their fingers brush his. They lean just a bit closer to him.
“For the record, I would have said yes even if the vinyl wasn't at stake.”
He laughs nervously, a little louder than he should have if he wanted to seem calm, probably. “For the record. Like, because --” he gestures vaguely to the album, and when he realizes it wasn't an intentional pun, he bites his tongue and forces a smile, “Yeah. Okay, well, I'll pick you up at seven, then. If that's cool.”
They turn just before they reach the door, “I'll see you then, Dewey. Don't be late.”
“I'm never late,” he shrugs.
“Sure you are. Every day I see you, you're late.”
And with that, they leave. He watches them walk down the block, disappearing shortly into the lunch-hour crowd.
“...So you did notice me.”

•—☕️; janAUary - coffee shop au !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ship: 🐸🖊️ ; clifflix
word count: around 800
author‘s note: haven’t written in a few months bear with .
Tumblr media
It was a casual cool September day. The wind had been blowing harshly and the sky was filled with gray clouds, indicating an incoming rain. The little bell on top of the brown door of the coffeeshop rang and the ash-blonde barista looked up, spotting a tall, blonde man coming in. The barista put down the mug and the cloth with which he had been drying all the freshly washed mugs and plates.
“Welcome. How can I help you, Sir?” he spoke, his voice soft and friendly-sounding. The taller man looked at him, a small smile forming on his face. "Hi! Uh-..could I get a Hazelnut Macchiato and a blueberry muffin, please?” The man spoke, fidgeting with the end of his dark-blue suit’s sleeves before he added: “Do you need my name for the order too?”
The barista chuckled, shaking his head. “We’re no Starbucks. But if you really want it, I can add your name of course.” As he spoke, the ash-blonde prepared the coffee, and whilst it was brewing in the machine he put the muffin into a small, light-brown bag. “Right, my bad” the man apologized. “I only recently discovered your shop. It’s way closer to the company than any Starbucks.” he added.
“And better and cheaper.” the barista smirked for a second before he poured the coffee into a cup, adding the lid and placing both items onto the counter. “Thank you for your order and have a nice day!” he smiled.
“You too-…” the blonde man took a glance at the name tag. “..Cliff.”
Cliff smiled at the blue-eyed man before he watched him leaving the coffee shop.
Tumblr media
The weeks passed rather quickly and the blonde man, whose name turned out to be Felix, became a regular customer. He sometimes visited the shop even without buying something, just to speak to the younger barista, which was also the case today.
Felix sat at the counter, talking his mind off over various architecture projects he’s been working on as Cliff has been listening intently. It was rather quiet in the coffee shop, most customers only ordered to-go and the few regulars who always visited the shop were sitting a bit more in the back and the music could be heard faintly in the back. “...and I only have two months left to finish this project and-” Felix silenced as he looked at the mug of fresh-brewed coffee in front of him, before he looked up at Cliff. “I didn’t order nor pay for any coffee.”
“I know, but I made it for you. Your usual. Hazelnut Macchiato.” the green-eyed man smiled. “You don’t have to pay for it, it’s for free.” he added quickly. “Why thank you..” Felix sat up straight, still looking at Cliff. “That’s…very sweet of you.”
“Don’t mention it. You deserve it after what I’ve been hearing. You’re working a lot and hard, so you deserve some fresh coffee. Oh and a blueberry muffin.” he chuckled at the end, placing a plate with said muffin on it next to the mug.
The blonde shook his head. “You’re way too kind. I have to repay you somehow.” He thought for a second. “Hey, what about I take you out for dinner? Doesn’t have to be today of course, but maybe whenever you’re free? There’s this nice restaurant near my place and if not then we could just stay at my place and watch a movie and order take-out if you don’t like fancy restaurants or if you don’t want that either we could just go to the cin-” Felix rambled, his voice turning more and more nervous the more that he spoke. “Felix.”  Cliff interrupted, making the older one look back at him, a slight pink blush spreading on his cheeks. “I’d love to go out for dinner with you. Or do anything with you, really. Whatever it is, as long as it’s with you it’ll be fun, I’m sure.” Cliff didn’t even notice, but as he spoke he held Felix hand, as he’s usually gesturing around with his hands when he’s speaking. The blue-eyed man gazed at their hands, the blush darkening. Cliff followed his gaze, his eyes going wide and his hand quickly letting go of the other’s.
“Oh gods I’m so sorry-..!” he instantly apologized, but Felix instinctively took the younger one's hand again. "Don't. "It felt…nice."
They both smiled at each other shyly before Cliff’s name got called out by one of the regulars and he let go of Felix’ hand again. “Just give me a second!” he said to the blonde, rushing to the customer.
“Don’t make me wait too long.” Felix chuckled, leaning back in his seat as he watched the younger one writing down orders.
There were many emotions he felt at that time, but the one he felt the strongest was love. And he had a slight feeling Cliff felt the same.

JanAUary - Fake Dating
Tumblr media
pairing: Natalie x Roman Roy
summary: Natalie does Roman a huge favor by pretending to be his girlfriend for a party but it doesn't help her self esteem much
content warnings: suggestive language, angst
word count: ~1.5k
author's note: i think i went a little nuts on this one not gonna lie but hey baby's first fake dating fic LOL
Tumblr media
“Ugh, you are such a dick.” Natalie sneered, cradling her drink in her hand, “Why did you even need me to play girlfriend for you? You could’ve gotten the same shit from a cheap hooker.”
Roman groaned and rolled his eyes, “You were free, that’s why.”
“You’re just proving my point.” She huffed and shifted uncomfortably.
“Why did you even agree to this if you’re going to complain the whole time?” He asked, his eyes scanning over the crowd to see if anyone noticed how she was acting.
Natalie shrugged, “I have low self esteem and I’m masochistic, I guess.”
Today was the day she did Roman one of the biggest and stupidest favors of all time: pretend to be his girlfriend for a party. It felt juvenile and truly, it was. This was the sort of thing that reminded her of high school. Natalie was shocked she even went through with it but in her defense, he was very insistent. He said something along the lines of how it was just for looks and how it would make the both of them appear good. He asked her, no, he begged her to play along just for the night. She was resistant at first but with his ceaseless pleading and puppy dog eyes, Natalie eventually caved. Not without a price, though. Before finally agreeing, she gave him a cold, hard look and spat out, “You owe me. Big time.”
Roman rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly realizing how much of a jerk he was being, “Can I, um, get you a drink? Or something?”
She glanced at the drink she had in her hand, “No, thanks. I’m good…” She watched a group of people pass them, “...Darling.”
“Do you have to say it with such contempt? Can’t you make it sort of believable?” His lip curled, “Jeez, I’m starting to regret asking you to do this.”
“What a coincidence! I’m starting to regret agreeing to it. So, at least you’re not alone.” Natalie sighed, “Whatever. We’re here now and you’re going to make it up to me later. Might as well make the best of it.”
“What on earth do you want me to do to pay you back, anyway? The suspense is killing me.” Roman said nervously, covering it up with a small laugh.
She shrugged, “I dunno yet. It’ll come to me, don’t worry. I’m not gonna forget.”
“Seriously? I ask you for one favor and suddenly, I owe you restitution?”
“Retribution.” Natalie corrected him.
“What?”
A small, frustarted sigh escaped her lips, “Nevermind.”
Roman gave her an annoyed glare, “Okay, little miss English major. My point is, are you seriously going to hold this over my head?”
“Yes, actually. Having me as your play pretend girlfriend for your stupid, fancy party is asshole behavior and I think I deserve a little prize for taking a blow to my self confidence.” She growled, not being able to hide her vitriol anymore.
He suddenly got quiet and softened his gaze, “...I just wanted to look good to Dad, I guess.”
She clicked her tongue, “Glad to know I was your perfect fake option.”
He wanted to reply to her and give her some sort of reassurance but a group of people, including his family, were heading over to where the fake couple stood. Roman cleared his throat and straightened his posture, beckoning Natalie to follow his lead. She groaned quietly before doing the same, jumping a little when he hesitantly put one of his hands on the small of her back.
“Hi, hello, hiya,” He greeted, “Nice get together, huh?”
“So, Rome,” Shiv ignored his question, “Who is this? Now, I know you of all people couldn’t land a girl for longer than three days without making her turn tail and run.”
He awkwardly laughed at her comment, “Uh, no, she’s stayed for four days so, take that.”
“I’m Natalie,” She introduced herself, extending her hand outward.
Shiv shook it, giving her a smirk, “Hmm, I feel like you’re too normal for him. Too pretty, too.”
“Now, don’t inflate my ego.” Natalie giggled, “I’ll let it get to my head much like the alcohol.”
“So, why Rome?” She asked genuinely with the rest of the group behind her agreeing.
Roman’s breath hitched. He hated these types of questions. Especially now, knowing exactly how Natalie felt about him in this particular moment. Not only that, but he was used to being the butt of every joke ever told in his family, so he expected her to be no different.
Instead, she laid her free hand on his chest and grinned, “What’s not to love? I mean, look at him! Taking me to such a fancy event to show me off! Isn’t that just sweet?”
Shiv snorted, “More like expected of us.”
“Well, still.” Natalie shook her head, “Not to embarrass him but gosh, I don’t think I’ve ever met a man as handsome as him before. I just love his eyes.”
Roman felt like he was glued to the floor. She was saying kind things? About him? After he was being so unkind about this whole situation? He couldn’t believe it. He was convinced her hand was burning a hole in his suit with the way his chest felt warm under her touch. It felt kind of…nice?
“I’m awfully lucky to have landed such a guy, you know?” She continued praising him, “He’s such a darling.”
Darling.
That word again.
Only this time, she didn’t say it with disgust in her voice. He knew she was pretending because that’s what he asked her to do but the way she said it so sweetly had him fooled for a minute. It actually felt like he was adored by her. His entire world stood still for a few moments while strange thoughts flooded his head. If this is how loving she was when she was acting, how far off would her genuine affection be?
“Earth to Roman?” Shiv snapped her fingers in his face, “I’ve been trying to talk to you.”
He shook his head, becoming embarrassed that he was obviously spacing out, “Sorry, you talk so much I almost fell asleep there. What were you saying? Something, something, politics, something, right?”
She laughed at him, “Well, what I was saying was that she seems good for you. You guys look nice together. I just hope you don’t find some way to self destruct and fuck it all up.”
“Too late.” He thought to himself but instead, said, “Yeah, yeah, as if I want marriage advice from someone who cucks her own husband.”
“Be nice!” Natalie playfully shoved him, “But I think I should get going. I’m getting a bit tired. I loved meeting you all!”
Everyone waved and said their goodbyes before heading their separate ways. Once his family was out of sight, they let go of each other and went back to an embarrassed silence.
“You’re welcome, by the way.” Natalie spoke first, having a hard time making direct eye contact with him.
“Yeah, uh, thanks.” Roman looked at his feet, “You did good.”
She scoffed, “Maybe I should’ve gone to school for acting instead of English, huh?”
He halfheartedly laughed at her joke, “You could’ve gotten an Emmy with that performance you did.”
“Tell me about it.”
“Hey, uh,” He started to ask as she started to put on her coat, “Did you mean all that stuff back there? Like, the nice stuff?”
She gave him a weird look, “I mean, I do think you have nice eyes if that’s what you mean.”
His cheeks felt a little warm at that, “That’s kinda what I mean. I’m talking about the other stuff, too.”
“Well, it’s not like we’re actually dating, so I kinda tacked on all that 'He's such a lovely boyfriend' crap.” She admitted, “Sorry if that was too much or anything. I figured you’d want that since you asked me to do this.”
“No, no, you did fine, trust me.” Roman waved those words away, “I guess I just want to know if you actually meant what you said. That I’m darling and stuff.”
Natalie paused, not quite sure how to answer. Truth be told, she thought he was an ass. But at the same time, he was awfully endearing. When he wanted to be, that is. She cleared her throat and put her coat on, “Yeah, I think you’re very darling. I think anyone that ended up with you would be very, very lucky. Have a good night, Rome. Remember that you owe me one.”
“Y-Yeah, you too. Don’t worry, I won’t.” He said as she walked out the door.
Roman stared at the door she walked out of, almost hoping she’d come back to talk to him some more. He knew better, though, and eventually returned to the event. Although, he wasn’t present for it mentally. Shiv’s words kept running through his mind. Maybe he did what he does best and hit self destruct on one of the truest friendships he’s ever had. Maybe he also destroyed whatever chances he had with her romantically now, too. Only he could decide if he wanted to fix that or not.

JanAUary: Flower Shop
with: Jodie x Blackmore

A gentle bell rang as Blackmore opened the door. Inside the tiny florist shop was a sight he'd never seen; as if the blond had stepped into a maze of flowers and plants, roses and tulips and flowers he'd never even seen before rowed the walls, floor to ceiling. The colors and smells all burning into his eyes and nose gave him a headache, not to mention the itchy feeling of a pollen induced sneeze.
"Achoo!"
"Ah, just a moment, please!"
The sound of a soft voice stirred Blackmore into a panic. He was frantically looking for the perfect bouquet. There! Simple red roses, countless of them wrapped in a beautiful matching red silk ribbon in a stand on the register counter. The size was incredible, bigger than the man's head. He couldn't begin to count how many there were. It was perfect for what he was planning.
Before he could touch- he didn't want to, anyway -a door behind the counter opened, and a young blonde woman appeared. Blackmore was taken back by her beauty, golden hair, two mismatched eyes set in her skull, skin like a doll. Blackmore wasn't one normally moved by someone's looks, but this woman before him and the soft eyes she gave him set a warm blush in his pale cheeks.
"Hello, sir! How can I help you today?" She asked in a honey sweet voice.
"Mm," He fidgets with the collar of his shirt, pointing a measly finger at the bouquet between them. "This... is it for sale?"
"Of, of course! I just put it together this morning, been meaning to add the finishing touches. It's such a pretty bouquet isn't it?"
The woman took the arrangement with deft hands, Blackmore watched her wrap the flowers with decorated papers, swaddling them as if the bouquet was a baby. His tired eyes caught sight of the name tag on her left breast. Jodie Ferdinand, owner.
"So, may I ask who this arrangement is for? A lover? A wife? Husband?" Jodie asked, her eyes narrowing the slightest in a teasing way. The thought of buying anything for a romantic partner was too much for the man. Shades of pink overcame his face, and he immediately shot down her silly ideas. "Oh, no, no, no! I'm... I-It's for my mother's, it's... it's their anniversary today. I wanted to give them something they'd both enjoy..."
"Oh!" Jodie's eyes flew wide open, "Forgive me for assuming, sir!"
Her hands paused on her work. "Although, may I give you a suggestion?"
Blackmore can't even stumble out an answer before the roses are forgotten, and Ms. Jodie is already zooming around the counter, making a bee-line for the far wall of flowers. He of course followed.
She talks nonchalantly as her hands caress flower petals, feeling their soft texture. "Roses are lovely, yes, but when it comes to buying someone a bouquet, you always want to find one with meaning!"
She takes out some long white flowers, ones Blackmore couldn't name, and Jodie leaves to find more. "Flowers speak when we can't, so it's good to have the perfect arrangement! Deep red flowers often signify romance, none more clearly than the beloved rose, so let's get you something perfect for the occasion!"
The woman looked so happy, a beaming light that fed the flowers around her. Her words didn't mean a lot to Blackmore, but the excitement and professionalism was addictive. He followed close behind like a lost puppy, watching her pull more flowers from the walls. He didn't understand what any of them meant, but the colors paired so so wonderfully, he felt like kicking himself for almost buying those roses, when something so much more perfect existed for his two mothers.
Jodie suddenly turned around, startling the older man. Her eyes had a light in them while she proposed the new bouquet. "Tada! What do you think? I've used pink and yellow lilies, with just a few white hyacinths."
"They look beautiful..." Blackmore murmured.
"Yay! I'm so glad! Let's go back to the front, I'll get them wrapped for you."
She had a new skip in her step, hair tails bouncing with her.
Just like before, Blackmore watched her again with more intrigue. The ribbon she used this time was a pleasant lavender color, with the wrap being a clean white. While she worked she spouted on about the meanings of the flowers she chose. The yellow lilies symbolized joy, the pink gratitude. The white hyacinths would balance out the color, but Jodie told him they symbolized love and prayer. How was it possible to create the perfect bouquet so easily? He was amazed. He pays for the bouquet. She charges him for a premade one, but when he asks, she only brushes him off.
"Don't worry about it. Since it's for such a special occasion, I don't feel right charging you extra."
"Thank you... for doing all of this for me." He said while gratefully taking the flowers into his arms. "You really didn't have to do all of this..."
"Oh, but it's no problem to me, sir! I love making bouquets, most of the time people just buy the premade arrangements, so getting to create new ones for customers is always so fun!" She sighs a little wistfully, resting her chin on her two fists. "It gets a little boring over here without company... I try to keep myself busy in any way that I can."
Blackmore felt his chest deflate. The disappointed look didn't look right on her face.
He felt something inside of him bubble up. A question that fought to be asked. "Would..."
The blond immediately clammed up when Jodie's two eyes made contact with his. One a deep ocean blue. The other a milky grey. He didn't realize before what that could entail. "B-Believe it or not, it's my boss' birthday in a few weeks! I wasn't sure what to get him, but after talking with you, I'm sure he'd enjoy a personal bouquet!"
"Oh! Do you think so? Your boss? How wonderful! Since I have some time, I'm sure I can make the perfect flower arrangement! Definitely something purple... Maybe some chrysanthemums!" Blackmore couldn't help but share her enthusiasm. A soft smile broke on his lips. "That sounds wonderful."
Jodie grabbed for something underneath the counter, coming back with a company card. "Take this, it has my phone number. You can call me whenever you'd like, maybe we can schedule another meeting so we can talk more about your boss' bouquet!"
"Yes, sounds like a date!"
As soon as the words are out of his mouth, Blackmore wants to eat them. "I-I mean, not like that, I–!"
Jodie beams, "Yeah! Kind of like a date! I can't wait." She extends her hand out to him. "You probably know already, but my name is Jodie. I own the place with my brother, Franz."
Another split second decision, his mouth is working before his brain does. "Everyone calls me Blackmore, but... you can call me Ritchie."
"Ritchie!" She tests the name out. He enjoys the way she says it. "What a pretty name, I love it. I can't wait to see you again, Ritchie!"
"Likewise."
His brain is malfunctioning. The woman before him is too cute, it's making him feel queasy. He needs to run away. Leave before he can make a bigger fool of himself. "I can't wait to speak to you again, Ms. Ferdinand! But I must get going, I hope your day is well, Ma'am!"
He zips out of the store like lightning, taking the younger woman by surprise. She isn't allowed to wish him off, and that makes her sad. But the promise of seeing the nice stranger again takes those emotions and flips them on its head. She's excited for her next meeting with Mr. Ritchie Blackmore.

Violet stepped out of the inn wearing jeans and a blouse. It was dinner time, and she and Ray were meeting up with his high school classmates for dinner before the high school reunion party the next night. They walked side by side to the restaurant. He seemed distracted, watching the ground with a pensive expression on his face. “Nervous?” Violet asked.
She didn’t blame him. The plan was ridiculous. When Peter suggested it, her first instinct was to flat out refuse. It took coaxing from both him and her personal assistant, Steffi, to get her to agree to pretend to be Ray’s girlfriend at his high school reunion. There was no way she would be able to keep up that kind of ruse. Her fame and success had come from writing, not acting. Not that she wouldn’t be able to convince people she liked Ray as more than a friend. That part came easy to her. But how was she supposed to act like a girlfriend when she had never been anyone’s girlfriend before?
While waiting in the line to get into the restaurant, the first person to greet them was what looked like to Violet to be some washed up high school football star. “Ray, old pal!” He slapped Ray on the shoulder just a little too hard, making him flinch and rub the spot where he hit after. “Hey, no hard feelings about last time, right, old buddy? Just a bit of dark magic between old friends!”
“Hi, Alan.” Ray sounded mostly annoyed.
“Yeah, I mean it was just like old times, right? Remember in high school when I used to steal your bike and not give it back to you for weeks at a time…”
“The last time, you never gave it back.”
“...Or that one time I moved that carjack in shop class while you were still under the car?”
“I had to get stitches.”
“Boys will be boys, right?”
“That’s what the cops told me.”
“And who is this gorgeous creature?” Alan moved past Ray, sliding in between him and Violet in line and leaning against the wall in front of her.
“This is Violet. Violet, this is Alan.”
“Alan Favish, Head Quarterback for the Morrisville High Eagles, Class of ‘76. So, he guilt tripped you into tagging along, did he?” He jerked his head towards Ray as if he wasn’t still standing right next to them and hearing all of this. “Well, It’s not a total loss. I can make sure you still have a good time…”
“Actually, I’m his girlfriend.”
Alan raised his eyebrows in disbelief. “You’re dating him? Ha! I guess I’m not the only one who’s using dark magic around here. What kind of love potion did you have to use to convince her to date you, huh, Ray? Must have been some powerful stuff!”
Violet sneered.
“Hey, I’m just joking! Meet you inside, buddy!” Alan punched Ray in the forearm, again just a little too hard, as he left them in the line.
The second person to approach them was an older gentleman in a rather loud suit and a sash that said “MAYOR” in big red letters. Violet wondered if he wore it all the time. “Roy Stantz!” He greeted Ray.
“It’s Ray… again…” Ray reminded him.
“When I heard our hometown hero was coming back for the high school reunion, I had to come say hello! And I also heard a rumor that you were bringing a famous celebrity author…” He turned his full attention to Violet, ignoring that Ray looked ready to say something. “Violet Bellamy, I presume? I recognize you from all those magazine covers! I’d just like to tell you what an honor it is to have you in our little town!”
“Um, Thank you.” Violet said as the mayor grabbed her hand and shook it all too eagerly.
“The town council would love to have you do a speech at the town hall, Miss Bellamy. Maybe take a few photos to put in the newspaper and hang on the walls of my office. How about the morning after the reunion?”
“Uh… sure.” They were taking the train at noon the day after the reunion anyway. Although Violet kind of hated the way this guy brushed over Ray for her. She wouldn’t have been as successful as she was if it wasn’t for his expertise in the paranormal. And something about the way the people in this town treated him…
They finally made it inside, and after they got partway through their dinner, a pretty girl interrupted them, smiling wide as she pulled up a chair in between the two of them and faced Ray. “Ray, it’s so good to see you again!”
“Hi, Elaine.” Ray said.
“I’m so sorry I haven't called since the last time we saw each other. I know I said I would, but I’ve just been so busy fixing up the house I inherited that you messed up while you were trying to catch the ghosts that were haunting the place, and it just kinda slipped my mind until this reunion!” She said, upbeat.
“Oh, that’s okay, it’s only been… a few months.”
“I knew you’d understand! Hey, why don’t you come over tomorrow before the reunion and help me out? I remember you being real handy back in high school. I have a few walls that still need repairing, and some electrical work, and maybe a bit of the plumbing. I know it’s a lot, but you were such a good friend back in the day, I remember how you used to always jump start my old car whenever my boyfriend couldn’t because he was at basketball practice, even when it was raining out! So, what do you say?”
“Well, I kind of already had plans…”
She laid her hand on his arm and batted her eyelashes. “Please, Ray?”
Ray sighed. “Well, maybe I can swing by really quick and take a look at the place.”
“You’re so good to me, Ray! You know, I’ve still been reading all the newspaper articles with you in them. Your success has been very interesting to me.” She winked, and left without even acknowledging Violet.
Ray shot her an apologetic look. “I’m sorry…” he whispered to her.
Violet didn’t respond. In fact, she didn’t say much of anything until they were back in the room at the inn. But, then she just had to ask. “Why do you let these people treat you this way?”
Ray sighed. “I don’t know. Coming back here has always felt… wrong, somehow. High school was honestly the most difficult time of my life. When I moved here, my parents had just died, and I wasn’t getting along with my siblings, and I felt so small and helpless and alone. It wasn’t until I left for college in the big city that I stopped being so shy, and when I’m in this town again, I feel like that sad little teenager again.”
“So, why do you come back?”
“Because, for some inexplicable reason, I feel like I have something to prove to these people. Like, no matter what I do, how successful I get, I’m always gonna be that weird kid who’s going nowhere in life to them! I know it’s pathetic, but I’ve felt that way ever since I left this town.”
“Ray…” Violet wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry these people make you feel that way. And I’m sorry I got upset with you. I didn’t know…”
Late that night, as Ray slept on the cot in the corner of the room, Violet slipped out of the bed and opened her suitcase. She dug through the clothes she had packed until she found the outfits Steffi had slipped into her suitcase, despite her protesting. She looked over at Ray, who was snoring lightly. She laid the outfit neatly on the top of the pile of clothes, and then shut it again.
-
Violet stepped out of the inn wearing a halter top romper in deep red with matching red chunky heels with an ankle strap. Her short brown hair fell in a perfect wave down to just below her jawline and was piled to one side. Her red lips curled into a smile when she saw Ray waiting for her outside. His mouth fell open when he saw her. She put her finger under his chin and shut his open mouth gently “C’mon, babe. Let’s go see a girl about a house.” He couldn’t help but stare at the way the thin silk fabric of her shorts wrapped around her curves as she walked ahead of him, leading him by the hand to the old mansion on the outskirts of town.
As they walked down the street in the middle of town, every man who passed them turned their heads to stare at Violet as long as they could. Some literally stopped dead in their tracks when they spotted her. A couple teenagers walked up to them. “Hey, are you Violet Bellamy?”
“Yeah, I am!” Violet smiled.
“No way! I can’t believe it’s really you! I loved your last book. Scariest thing I’ve ever read, it gave me nightmares for days!”
“Thanks!”
“Hey, could I, like, get your autograph?”
At the mansion, Violet wrapped herself around Ray as Elaine approached, taking his arm in hers while the other one rested on his chest. The other girl faltered in her gait as she took in the sight of Violet, before bringing herself the rest of the way down the dirt path. “Hi, Ray! Glad you could make it!”
“Uh…” Ray’s voice shook. He forgot what exactly he was supposed to say in response, nor could he remember to take his eyes off of Violet as she rubbed the center of his chest in a slow, steady rhythm. “Yeah, sure, Elaine.” He finally squeaked out. Violet smiled at him, pleased with his response.
She turned that smug smile to the shocked girl in front of them. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Violet Bellamy, Ray’s girlfriend.” The hand on his arm slid up to his shoulder as the hand on his chest reached out palm upwards.
“Uh… Hi.” Elaine shook hands briefly, still in disbelief.
“Ray just came over to see the house, like he said he would last night at dinner. Right, baby?” Violet laid her red fingertips on Ray’s cheek. He swallowed hard. “Uh-huh.” He nodded.
She chuckled. “He is so sweet. It’s one of the things I love about him. Just like an angel, sent down from Heaven just for me…” Violet let her face get closer and closer to Ray’s as she spoke. She took one last look at Elaine’s dumbfounded face before closing the gap between her red lips and Ray’s, initiating their first kiss and her first ever kiss. She hoped it was really as simple as Steffi told her it was, wrapping her lips around Ray’s bottom lip, sucking a little, and moving them slowly against his. She hoped it looked enough like they had done this before, and more importantly, she hoped Ray was enjoying it. When she pulled away, the bright red blush in his cheeks and the blissful expression on his face told her he had, to her ecstatic delight.
Satisfied, she turned to Elaine again. “Well, we said we’d look at the house.” She looked the house up and down. “You were right. It does need work. See you at the reunion!” She led Ray by the arm away from the house and away from its now fuming mad owner.
“Violet…?” Ray started.
“What? I’m supposed to be your girlfriend, aren’t I?” She looked up at him. As gratifying as that was, she hoped he didn’t think she had gone too far. He closed his mouth again and only looked at her with sad, pleading eyes. “Are you alright, Ray?”
“I… it’s nothing.”
-
They spent the rest of the day walking around Ray’s old neighborhood, going by his old house and all his favorite spots where he spent his free time. That night, they went to the high school gym for the reunion party. Violet was sitting at a table covered with a blue tablecloth and gold confetti, sipping on whiskey ginger Ray just brought her before excusing himself to use the restroom. Alan sat down next to Violet and placed his beer on the table. “Hey gorgeous. Do you wanna dance?”
Violet put her head in her hand. “I’d rather die.”
“C’mon, baby, what else are you gonna do? Sit around with Ray all night? I know I could show you a way better time.”
Violet blinked. Without a word, she picked up his beer with her free hand and poured it onto his crotch. She put the cup back on the table, and smiled slightly.
Alan jumped up from the table. “You little tramp! Who do you think you are?”
“Well, I’m not an ex-high school quarterback desperately trying to relive the glory days that are far behind me, that’s for sure.”
“You think that’s funny?”
“I think it’s true. I think you’re pathetic. You’ve been handed everything you’ve ever gotten because of some stupid game, and now that you don’t have that to lean on anymore you’ve realized that you’re nothing but a waste of space, and your life is going nowhere. I think you’re half the man Ray is, and you always have been, and you always will be.”
He grabbed her by the elbow and lifted her up from the table. “No one talks to me that way, you little-”
Ray came up from behind and ripped Alan’s hand away from Violet’s arm, spinning him to face him before punching him square in the face, knocking him unconscious. He fell to the floor with a loud thud that echoed through the gym, causing everyone to look. “Well, maybe someone should, Al. It’d be the first time anyone’s been honest with you.” He crossed over to Violet, taking her in his arms. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine, Ray.” She put her hands on his chest. “You were incredible.” She looked over at Alan lying face down on the floor. Ray looked up and saw that the entire gym full of people were now staring at the two of them. Violet kept her eyes on him as she continued. “Ray, you’re so wonderful. You’re sweet, you’re brilliant, you’re so brave, you always do what’s right, even when it’s difficult, even when it’s a detriment to you. I’m so lucky just to know you, to have someone like you in my life. I love you.” Violet wrapped her arms around him and buried her face into the crook of his neck.
His face heated up, but his movements were stiff as he wrapped his arms around her waist. “Violet…?”
“Yes, Ray?”
“...Can we leave?”
“Yeah. Let’s leave.”
Ray had a strange, almost angry look on his face as he walked, faster than he normally did, with Violet to their room. For the first time since she had known him, she was almost afraid to ask him what was wrong. “Ray…?”
He didn’t respond. He sat on the bed, facing away from her.
“Did I do something wrong today?”
He stood up. “You’ve been driving me crazy, all day…”
“I’m sorry. I might have laid it on a little too thick, I guess….”
“The way you look, and all the touching, and the compliments, and that kiss…”
“Ray, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable…”
“I want it to be real!” he whirled around to face Violet, tears in his eyes.
“You do?”
“I want it so bad! I’ve wanted you ever since the day we met, but today was just… I couldn’t stand it! I feel like I’ve been losing my mind all day! I need it to be real! I need to know, did you mean any of it?”
“Ray…” Violet ran to him, wrapping him up tight in a hug. “Yes, sweetheart, I meant it. I meant all of it. You’re the most wonderful, amazing, incredible man in the whole world, and I’ve been madly in love with you from day one. You’re so far beyond anyone in this town, I couldn’t stand the way they treated you. I wanted them to see what I see in you. You deserve someone who adores you, worships you, who would never take you for granted or treat you like you’re beneath them. Ray, I want you to see that in yourself!” Violet kissed him on his lips. “I want you to realize how incredible you are, how much you mean to me!” She kept kissing him, on his cheeks, his nose, his jawline. “And I… I don’t want you to sleep on that cot tonight!”
“Oh, Violet…” Ray wrapped his arms around her and gently guided her onto the bed, kissing her.
-
Violet stepped out of the inn wearing a tight black knee-length dress with a square neckline, elbow-length sleeves, and a high slit up her left leg. Her brown hair was smoothed back, the tips just barely covering the top of her neck. She had left Ray lying in bed, still fast asleep. What she has to do this morning wouldn’t take long. She had a speech prepared that this town would never forget.
When she walked into the crowded town hall, all conversation halted immediately. She stood behind the podium and surveyed the crowd, unsmiling. “Every single one of you is scum  compared to Ray Stantz. Even if he wasn’t a Ghostbuster. Even if he wasn’t famous. Even if he wasn’t anything even close to successful. He will always be twice the person any one of you are. And you’re all going to get what’s coming to you.”
Nobody could say anything. Even the ones that wanted to couldn’t seem to make their mouths move, no matter how hard they tried. “All of you will stay trapped in this town, like rats in a cage, and rot. He and I will have good fortune and happiness, and you will only have despair. I place a curse upon your town now.” She raised her hands, covered to the wrist in gloves of black silk, and whispered. “Acadiona Ludio Impbeo Angarum Noreabus.”
She left the stage and walked through the silent crowd. She didn’t stop until she reached the room where Ray was just waking up. “I’m sorry I slept through your speech, honey. How did it go?”
“I think it went very well. Let’s go home now, darling.”

So if you didn’t know, I headcanon Eric Stoltz playing Marty in the Hell Valley timeline (we never see him in the movie so you cant say im wroonnngggg). Since Biff shot and killed George when Marty was 4, Marty didn’t really know his dad. And ofc he hates Biff, so he just uses his mother’s maiden name. [And he only lets his fam call him ‘Marty.’ To everyone else, he’s ‘Martin’🫢]
I was only supposed to draw Stoltz!Marty for 3 frames. As you can see, I got carried away.
In the fanfic I'm working on, they'll meet but I don't think it'll go down exactly like this.
I took all the dialogue from Across the Spiderverse (except for the name ofc). I've had the rough sketches of this since last September (its January for future reference). I LOVED the movie and when I rewatched BTTF Part 2 I put 2 and 2 together and now we’re hereeee
Earth 42 Miles >>>
Eric Stoltz Marty >>>
Im half-kidding. How tf they got more rizz than the MC with a fraction of the screen time tho its not fair 😩☠️

The Elf Servant and Water Fairy!
(Bel and Tip are fairy boys and Vanilla got shrunk down to fairy size!)
Tumblr media
JanAUary: Fantasy AU (but this au is here to stay!)
The Elf Servant and Water Fairy! (a “short” fanfic) (you don’t have to read the writing! You can just enjoy the drawing instead! The one shot fanfic is just for my own enjoyment pretty much, anyway ^^”)
Warning: this fanfic contains ooc (out of character) content. I've said this in another post a while ago, but it's pretty much its own stand alone thing if I were to change Vanilla and Dio's names.
“Ice!” King Dio, the vampire ruler of Brandopolis calls to his servant. The very tall elf man with long, wavy, chocolate brown hair turns to face his king,
“Yes, sire?”
“When you go to town today, be sure to pick up plenty of supplies for baked goods. I want you to make plenty of desserts for the ball this weekend.” The vampire king grins, showing a hint of his pointy fangs. Ice nods and gives his king a polite bow,
“As you wish, my lord.”
Ice slings his satchel over his shoulder with a small sigh. He gently rubs the snout of his ghastly looking black horse, he lovingly named Cream. The elf servant kisses the white heart shaped marking on the forehead of his horse before mounting his stead and riding off into town. Cream trots carefully because he’s towing a cart behind him. Creamerton, this is the town Ice was born in before he was hand picked to be the loyal right hand man of King Dio. The delightful smell of baked goods is around every corner. Everyone in this town is always smiling and enjoying life… everyone except Ice was. When Ice was a child, his parents left him on a doorstep, never to return for him. As much as Ice loves the town he grew up in, a lot of rotten memories resurface of being abandoned, outcasted, and hurt. A lot of people weren’t very fond of Ice because of how inattentive and clumsy he can be, as well as a little off putting considering the fact he doesn’t care much to make conversation.
As Ice and Cream trot into town, a few of the residents take notice and whisper to one another. He has gotten a lot more respect after being dubbed King Dio’s royal right hand. Not everyone in Brandopolis, or Creamerton for that matter, dislikes Ice however. Some people wave to him and give him warm and welcoming smiles. Ice nods and waves back to them. The elf man pulls Cream to a stop at one of the shops and ties him to a post. Ice dusts off his laced purple dress, fixes his circlet, and brushes his beautiful chocolate brown hair to cascade down his back. They inhale and walk into the shop, preparing themself to speak to other people.
“Ice! There you are.” A large elf man with a big dark brown beard, peppered with grey and white hairs smiles at the young elf. He pats Ice’s back, “I was wondering when you’d arrive. Come here, come here.” He gently presses Ice’s back to follow him.
Ice is brought to a counter,
“Mr Elote, these…”
“Yessir, these are the freshest ingredients I have to offer. If anyone’s going to nab the best, it’s going to be Vanilla.” Elote pats Ice on the back, “Oh! I apologize… I keep forgetting King Dio gave you a new spoken name. After all, it is you who holds the ice crystal of Brandopolis.” Ice touches the crystal that rests upon his forehead, safely lodged in the circlet he wears around his head,
“Yes… indeed. Um… thank you for everything, Mr Elote.” Ice and Mr Elote carry crates of ingredients to the cart Cream has behind him. After the two elf men place the last crates into the cart, Elote dusts of his hands and chuckles,
“Always a pleasure, Vani- uh- Ice!” The two elves shake hands happily. Elote sighs and wipes his brow, “I find it quite amusing that you and my son, Cinnamon- er Fire as they call him now, are both royal servants of the great King Dio.” Ice nods, about to speak, but Elote’s brows frown. The older elf man is visibly troubled,
“But um… I admit… I’m very worried about him. I know you both never really got along very well but… how is he doing, lad?”
“Oh, Cinnamon…” Ice mumbles and looks to his lower left. He looks back down at Elote, “F-Fire. Ahem, Fire has been doing well… although, he has been training for battle more intensely than any of us other gem holders.” The brunette returns the look of concern Cinnamon’s father gives him. For a few moments, there’s a fog of dread between the two men. Elote shakes his head then smiles helplessly,
“I’m certain he’s just being cautious. After all, he’s always been quite the hot head, am I right? Ahahaha!” Elote laughs heartily, “It was fate that he would be the holder of the fire crystal, lad. Alright… you take good care of those ingredients now, dear boy. Whip ‘em up some tasty treats this weekend.”
“Thank you, Mr Elote. Thank you for everything.” Ice nods then climbs back atop of his horse and they trot back to Dio’s castle.
That evening
The 4 gem holders are all kneeling in front of King Dio’s throne. The vampire glances over each one of them and speaks,
“Azalea of Foxville, holder of the earth crystal…” A young elf woman with curly bright red hair looks up at King Dio.
“Tawny of Shoebill City, holder of the sky crystal…” A young elf person with short blonde hair looks up at King Dio.
“Cinnamon of Creamerton, holder of the fire crystal…” A young elf man with long jet black hair looks up at King Dio. Dio looks at each of them, then smiles with a small, barely audible chuckle at the final person before him,
“And Vanilla of Creamerton… holder of the ice crystal.” Dio covers his mouth daintily and giggles, “Now, yet again I am amused by the fact that two people from the same place are holders of these sacred gems.” He shakes his head with a smile, “I want you four to continue your elemental training. The Warriors of Stardust are closing in and I don’t want our beloved land to be soiled by their nastiness.”
“Yes, King Dio.” The four of them speak in unison.
“Very good…” Dio looks at his nails, “All of you are dismissed except Ice.”
“But, sire.” Fire speaks up. Dio raises an eyebrow,
“What is it?”
“Whatever it may be, I could aid you with. Ice is far too uncoordinated and clumsy, your grace. They have no business attempting to handle delicate tasks, or any task you may hand to them.” Fire tells the vampire king. Ice gives Fire a very offended look. Dio is unamused by this and turns to look at his nails once again,
“That’s not really your place to talk, Fire. I suggest you be on your merry way. I give Ice menial and tedious tasks because he is such a good little servant boy. You needn’t worry your little head about his bumbling nature. You are dismissed.”
“I… yes, sire.” Fire grits his teeth, then gives Ice one last glare before leaving. Ice turns around, giving Fire a disgusted look.
“Ice.” Dio gets the elf man’s attention.
“Yes, my lord.”
“I have a little task for you, but you must do it tomorrow at dawn. When the sun rises, you do as well, no exceptions.” Dio commands Ice.
“Of course, sire.” Ice nods.
The next day
At the first light of dawn, Ice quickly gets ready for the day ahead of him. The elf packs his things and brings his beloved horse, Cream, with him. This journey should be a short one, but a very important one nonetheless. Ice gently touches their circlet as they trot into the forest,
“Steady, Cream.” Ice pets his horse.
The brunette looks at the map Dio gave him and follows each direction to the letter. Soon, they make it to their destination. Ice’s milk chocolate brown eyes widen at the sight before him. They hop off of their horse and gaze in awe at what they behold.
Before Ice, is a beautiful meadow with a small waterfall and little pond with the most crystal clear water he ever laid his eyes on. Butterflies, a vast variety of wildflowers, birds chirping, and a little rainbow from the mist of the waterfall in the morning light. Ice’s hands cover his mouth at the gorgeous sight.
Soon Cream nudges Ice’s back with his muzzle,
“Oh! Right, right.” The elf takes out a little empty potion bottle that Dio gave to him for this task. The brunette kneels down and looks at the water. It’s so clear that he can see the very shallow bottom. They turn and look at the small waterfall, which is about 4 feet tall at most. Ice inhales and starts trying to bottle some of the water.
Suddenly he feels a tickle on his ear. Ice scratches his ear and shakes his head.
The elf feels his other ear being tickled, so he scratches that one too. His temple tickles, his neck tickles, the top of his head tickles.
“Augh!” Ice scratches his head and ears, “What is that?! What’s going on?!”
He opens his eyes and sees a little floating blue blur of light on his nose, it tickles. Ice swats at it,
“Go away! Jeez, what a clingy bug.”
“Hey, I’m not a bug!” A high pitched voice in his right ear speaks. Ice turns to face the voice. He’s met with the floating ball of blue light, only when he squints… it looks like a tiny person! Ice gasps and backs away, crawling backwards and leans his back up against the small rock wall,
“W-w-what?! What is that?!” they point at the entity.
“What am I?! How about, ‘what are you’, big boy!” The tiny creature laughs at him. The creature flies around his face, making Ice swat his hand,
“Stop that! It… tickles.”
“Oh?” The entity lands on Ice’s knee and looks up at him.
“Y… you have bug wings. You are a bug! A bug with a body like an elf…?” Ice looks cautious and confused.
“You ever heard of a fairy, big guy?” The little fairy sits on Ice’s knee criss-cross style.
“Fairy? No that’s… they’re not real. That’s impossible- I have to be dreaming.” Ice rubs his eyes only to be face to face with the blue light ball, “Ewaugh!”
“What’s your name? What brings you here?” The fairy asks him.
“What? Oooh no. No you don’t. You fairies are tricksters. I’m not going to trust a fairy… even if I am dreaming.” Ice shakes his head.
“Hmph.” The fairy flies into his face and pokes his nose, making Ice squint. Fairy dust gets into his nose and he sneezes. The fairy laughs at him, swiftly flying around in circles. Ice looks up as the fairy flies away into the sky. The elf sighs and rubs his head… noticing that his sleeve is a lot bigger than it used to be… and his circlet falls over his face,
“What the-?! Huh?!”
Ice realizes that he’s shrinking. “No. No no no no NO!!!” Soon the elf is as small as the little blue fairy. The fairy daintily lands on the fallen dress and in the middle of the circlet,
“Hmmm… now where did you go?”
A little lump under a piece of the dress’s fabric starts moving.
“Oh! There you are.” The fairy glides over to the spot. Ice crawls out from under the fabric and looks up at the fairy.
“What did you do to me?! What did you do?!” Ice looks at his hands and arms, then all around at the place surrounding him and the fairy. Ice covers himself up out of embarrassment, realizing he’s nude now. The fairy giggles at him, making his cheeks heat up,
“It’s not funny, you horrible horrible being!”
“Oh, relax, elf boy,” The fairy crosses his arms and looks all around the lake and waterfall, “It’s a temporary spell. It’ll only last until the sun goes down.”
“Sundown?! No… No no no, I have to be at the palace before sundown.” Ice curls up and covers both his body and his face.
“Hm? Palace?” The fairy tilts his head, “Are you royalty?”
“No… I’m just a servant. Well…” Ice sighs and rests his head on his bicep as he lays down with one arm between his legs, “I’m the king’s favorite servant… oh and the uh, holder of the… nevermind.”
“Holder of what? What is it?” The fairy kneels down to him.
“Nothing! Just… please, fairy person, please turn me back to normal.” Ice begs the fairy.
“No can do, Mr elf guy… I’m afraid, just like I said before, the spell lasts all day.” He tells Ice, “Oh well… But hey, it’s not so bad being this small, especially when you can fly like me!” The fairy flies around while Ice lays there hopeless. The fairy laughs and flies around, then lands in front of Ice,
“Hey, come on now! What’s the matter?”
“I’m the size of a wasp and in my birthday suit in front of a stranger, what do you think the matter is?” Ice growls. The fairy pouts,
“Hmph… well, I guess I could help with the birthday suit thing. Stay right here.”
Ice sighs, feeling like he’s about to cry any moment now, but remains composed as best as he can.
“Alright, I’m back! Stand up.” The fairy holds up a violet flower petal and smiles at him.
“What’s that going to cover?” Ice stands up, covering his intimate area with both of his hands.
“You’ll see.” The fairy drapes the flower petal over Ice. In one quick motion, the petal is turned into a little mini dress over Ice.
“Huh?!” Ice looks all around at the little purple flower petal dress he is now wearing, “This is…”
“Beautiful? I know! Oh and don’t worry.” The fairy lifts up his dress a little to reveal his behind is covered up, “It comes with undies underneath!” He giggles then covers himself back up with his flower petal dress,
“I’m Tippy Tulip by the way. And you would be…?” Tippy asks.
“I’m… Well… They used to call me ‘Vanilla of Creamerton’. But King Dio has given me the name Ice. So Now I am called ‘Ice of Creamerton’.” Ice tells him.
“Oh, that’s so… cool heehee!” Tulip giggles.
“Look, Tulip. I really need to take a bottle of that water back to the palace. It’s very important to King Dio.” Ice tells him.
“Hm? Oh. Oh…” Tulip’s wings droop and his expression turns sour. He crosses his arms with a pout, “I see. Your king must’ve sent you here to meet me on purpose.”
“What are you talking about?” Ice asks, touching his new flower petal dress.
“Pfft… He wanted you to ask me to bless the water, but I guess he omitted the part where I come in. Which makes no sense!” Tulip rolls his eyes.
“Wait… what? Bless the water? Why? What does that do?”
“You ask so many questions! Don’t you know anything, Ice?” Tulip giggles then approaches Ice, “Whoa… you’re uh… you’re pretty tall.” Tulip looks up at him with awestruck eyes. Ice,
“And you’re pretty…”
“I’m pretty?” Tulip grins. While Ice tries to backtrack, Tulip laughs and bounces around, hovering and landing on different parts of Ice’s elf dress on the ground.
“Wait! That’s not what I was trying to say!” Ice huffs and waves his hands around, feeling his cheeks burn. Tulip flies back over, face to face with Ice, noses almost touching, then speaks,
“What’re we waiting for? Let’s get you some of that water so I can bless it!” He takes Ice’s hand and tries to pull them, “Hnnngh! This isn’t any use… you’re too heavy. Hmmm… Oh! I know!”
Tulip spins around in circles trying to touch his own wings. The fairy boy grabs both of his own wings and pats them down, making fairy dust.
“Alright, let’s see if this still works.” Tulip claps his hands together, making the fairy dust cover Ice.
“Hey!” Ice watches Tulip. Ice sneezes a few times, then flies backwards! Tulip floats over to Ice,
“Now you can fly! Haha! But you gotta hurry, you can only fly for a short time, Icy.”
“Incredible! I’m… I’m actually flying!” Ice hovers for a bit, only to land on his face, “Ough!”
“Hahahahaha! You’re funny!” Tulip lies next to them, “Okay, so you said you needed to get this pond water into a bottle? Where’s the bottle?”
“It should be in my satchel- oh no.” Ice turns and sees the now giant satchel lying next to his old dress, “If my satchel is huge then the bottle will be too. Do you think you could shrink the bottle down too?” Tulip’s brows frown and xe shakes xis head,
“I can’t. I’m sorry.” Xe looks up at the satchel, “I only know the spell that can make people smaller, and uh… this is the first time I’ve actually used it, eheheh!” Tulip rubs xis neck, “B-but, I can go get the bottle and bring it back down here.”
“Okay, well it’s a long, skinny bottle with a blue cork on the top. It fit neatly in the palm of my hand. Heh, I suppose you’d also fit neatly in the palm of my hand if I were back to my original size.” Ice chuckles.
“You want to hold me like that?!” Tulip spins around.
“W-wha-!? No! No, I said I could if I were back to my elf size!” Ice waves his hands around.
“I know, I was just teasing you, Icy. You’re fun to mess with.” Tulip smiles then flies up into the satchel. Ice’s bag moves around, Tulip bumbles about all while trying to find the bottle. Ice hovers around and does a few flips, playing with this new temporary flight of his.
“Oh! I think I found it!” Tulip’s voice is muffled. The blue fairy boy flies up, struggling a little bit to hold the bottle, “You weren’t kidding. This bottle is the same size as me! Only it’s a little bit taller, I’d say, heehee.”
Tulip rolls the bottle down the satchel. Ice tries to stop it but ends up getting cartoonishly flattened by it,
“Augh!”
“Oops.” Tulip glides down to Ice and helps them back up, “You okay?”
“Ow… how am I still alive?!” Ice looks at his hands.
“Well, due to the spell I cast on you, you have limited fairy powers. We can’t get crushed or stomped on, that’s not how we die! It still hurts though, especially when people think we’re bugs… but you all shouldn’t be killing bugs anyway.” Tulip pouts. Ice turns around,
“Alright then, let’s go ahead and fill up this bottle, shall we?”
“We shall!” Tulip flies over and helps them with filling up the bottle.
Meanwhile
“Sire!” Fire rushes into the throne room catching his breath, “King Dio!” Fire kneels and pants, sweat beading down from his forehead, “I just got word from lookout. The Warriors of Stardust are headed this way.”
“I see…” Dio narrows his eyes and looks away, pondering, this certainly isn’t good. Not only will we have to postpone the royal ball, but my entire kingdom is in danger. The vampire stares into Fire’s eyes, “And what of Ice? Has he made his return yet?”
“N… no, my lord. Ice has been gone all morning. There is no sign of him anywhere. He was supposed to be back hours ago.” Fire speaks with great concern.
“This is indeed a troubling matter.” Dio taps his cheek, shaking his head, “Very well. Alert the other two. Continue training. When would you say the Warriors of Stardust will arrive?”
“The latest they will arrive would be sunset.” Fire bows his head. Dio’s expression bitters, he scowls and rises from his throne,
“No good.” As Dio walks beside Fire, he motions for his servant to stand. Fire does so and sighs,
“I’m sorry, my king. We will do whatever we can to protect this land.”
“As you should. It is written in the prophecy that the element holders will protect this sacred land from any interlopers who wish harm upon it. I have faith in you all… We just need Ice to make his return so that you all shall use your element crystals to defend my kingdom.” Dio says. Fire nods,
“Yes, my king.”
As Dio leaves, Fire rubs his forehead and wanders off to a window,
“Oh, Vanilla… where the hell could you be at a time like this?”
Meanwhile
“Well, this sucks!” Tulip puffs out his cheeks, “How in the world are we gonna carry this monstrous satchel back to the palace? Can’t we just bring the stupid water I blessed?”
“Are you kidding? I don’t want to leave my stuff here!” Ice gives Tulip an incredulous look, “We have to find some way to-”
Cream’s snout is right above Ice as he snorts hot air onto the tiny man. Ice looks up,
“That’s it! We can use my horse!” Ice climbs up on the satchel, “Cream! I need you to put this satchel strap in your mouth and carry us back to the castle.”
Tulip flies up and sits next to Ice. They are soon picked up by Cream’s mouth, but that’s when Ice realizes something,
“Wait!” He turns around to look at the ground, which is very very far away. Ice trembles and clings to the satchel, “Oh dear… we’re so high up.”
“Hey, it’ll be okay. You can still use my fairy dust to fly. It’s no big deal!” Tulip dusts more of xis fairy dust onto Ice’s body. The brunette squints and rubs their eyes,
“Hold on a second! We still need to get my circlet! It’s very important that I have that with me at all times.” Ice turns up to his horse,
“Cream! Put us on your back please, I need you to grab my circlet as well.” They point to the ground. Cream rolls his eyes and sighs, then slings the satchel with the two small gentlemen onto his back. Ice holds onto Tulip as tight as he can in fear of falling. Cream walks over to the circlet on the ground and picks it up in his mouth. He whinnies and snorts to alert Ice that he now has the piece of jewelry.
“Th-thank you, O noble stead!” Ice chuckles, noticing he’s holding Tulip like a pillow, “O-oh! I’m sorry.” They release xem from their grip.
“Ow?” Tulip pouts and rubs xis arms.
“Right, um. Cream! Take us back to the castle!” Ice points up into the air. Cream whinnies and starts trotting into a random direction. After a while, Cream stops in his tracks, turning his head every which way. Nothing but dense forest lies ahead. Ice stands up and spins around, losing his breath from worry,
“Oh no.”
His brows frown and he can’t catch his breath from anxiety, “We’re lost.” He sits back down with his hands over his face. Tulip crawls over to him,
“Relax, relax! Look, we’ll find your way back home, okay? There’s always a way out. Didn’t you bring a map with you?”
“Y-yes, I did! I did. It’s right here in my satchel.” Ice crawls into the satchel. After a while, he pulls out the rolled up map and directions from the bag, “Okay, so all we have to do is follow this back home.”
“That’s easy enough, Icy! Let’s get to it!” Tulip stands up and puts his hands on his hips. Suddenly, quicker than the blink of an eye, Tulip is attacked by a yellow and purple blur. “OOF!!!”
Ice gasps and watches as two balls of light battle each other in the sky. The yellow and purple ball of light baps the blue ball of light a few times before taking him down to the ground. Ice quickly grabs onto Cream’s mane and is gently lowered to the ground.
Tulip is being pinned down on the ground by another very angry fairy, who’s slapping Tulip’s face. Ice rushes over to the two fairy gentlemen,
“HEY!!! GET OFF OF HIM!!”
The furious purple and yellow fairy whips his head around to face Ice with the most sour scowl. Ice gulps and backs away a little bit.
“And who is that?!” The purple haired fairy yells and gestures to Ice. Tulip rubs his face and shoves the other fairy off of xem,
“Ungh! It’s none of your business!” Tulip hisses, “C’mon, Icy, let’s get going. This jerk isn’t worth our time.”
“Uh…” Ice puts a finger up, very confused. The purple haired fairy gets in between Ice and Tulip with a frown,
“Oh no, you don’t, Tulip. You still owe me and I’m gonna get what I deserve.” They are fuming. Their wings flutter with irritation and their pointy ears are pinned down in anger.
“I told you, it’s elf garbage, Campanula. It had no real value to it.” Tulip turns to Ice and points xis thumb at the other, very nettled fairy, “This is Campanula Bellflower by the way… and he’s a huge JERK!”
“ME?!” Bellflower’s wings flutter, causing fairy dust to fall, “You’re the one who broke my priceless elf jewelry!” They adjust their little flower stamen tiara, “And don’t introduce me to some random-” He does a double take at Ice. Bellflower’s dark brown eyes widen and he stops in his tracks, “Random…” His cheeks heat up as he makes eye contact with the very attractive elf gentleman. The purple haired fairy’s wings flutter a bit as he fidgets with their fingers,
“H… hi, I’m Bellflower. Campanula Bellflower. Hi…”
“Uh, heheh, hi?” Ice awkwardly smiles and waves to them. Bellflower looks him up and down then turns to Tulip,
“Friend of yours?”
“Yeah.” Tulip crosses xis arms and narrows xis eyes at Bellflower. He giggles and covers his mouth,
“Wow… wait.” Bellflower looks around Ice, walking in circles around them, “W…where’s your wings?”
“Oh, I actually cast a spell on him because he was being mean to me. He’s actually an elf boy.” Tulip tells him.
“An elf boy?!” Bellflower gasps, “Oh wow! Wow wow wow!” Xe flies around Ice in circles, “You were being mean to Tulip? Well, good! Xe deserves it because xe breaks things that aren’t xis!”
“Shut up, Bellflower! At least I’m not the one wearing flower genitalia on my head.” Tulip smirks.
“Ugh!!!” Bellflower grunts in frustration then tackles Tulip yet again. The two fairies tumble around and attack each other in a cloud of colorful fairy dust. Ice dashes over to them,
“Hey! Quit that! Stop it! Knock it off!”
Bellflower and Tulip are slapping and biting each other until Ice shoves them both away,
“That is ENOUGH!” He growls, “I need to get back to the palace by sundown so this stupid spell wears off and I need to deliver the fairy blessed water to the king! They’re all probably wondering where the hell I am right now!” Ice furrows his brows at the two bickering fairies. Bellflower and Tulip both stop fighting and listen to the elf. They both turn to look at each other. Bellflower is awestruck,
“Palace?! Wow… I didn’t know I was in the presence of… royalty.” His eyelids hood and a smirk curls upon his plump lips as he approaches Ice. Tulip rolls his eyes,
“Oh boy…”
“So… the palace, huh? I hear the king is absolutely loaded with jewels and gold from every corner of the land.”
“O-oh, actually I-”
“Tell you what, I’ll help you get back to the palace before sundown if you promise me some jewelry from your king.” Bellflower looks Tulip up and down with a sneer, “That way, I guess I could let go of this little grudge and I might forgive this little twerp for destroying something precious to me.”
“Oh for the love of- it was a piece of TRASH, Bellflower!” Tulip yells at xem.
“You’re a piece of trash, Tulip!” Bellflower yells back.
“Guys! Enough! Seriously. I’m going to need all the help I can get anyway…” Ice jogs back over to Cream, “Okay, now we just need to get back on my horse and get out of this damn forest.”
“Oh! Oh! Do you need help?” Bellflower clasps his hands together and grins, “I can carry you!” Tulip shakes his head and rolls his eyes with a sigh. Bellflower hovers over to Ice and wraps his arms around the back of him with a dreamy sigh. Quite suddenly, both Ice and Bellflower fly up into the sky and land on Cream’s back, next to the satchel. Tulip follows them and sits criss-cross on the saddle.
Bellflower bats his eyes at Ice,
“So? How are you enjoying being this size, elf boy?”
“I’m not exactly enjoying any of it, to tell you the truth.” Ice dusts himself off, “So… what exactly is the deal with you two anyway?”
“Hmph!” Bellflower flips xis purple hair behind xis shoulder, “We used to be friends. I showed Tulip my latest collection of treasures I took from the elves. He saw one of my most favoritest and prettiest items yet, then he started playing with it! Before I knew it, it snapped in half!” Bellflower pouts.
“It was a hunk of junk, Bel!” Tulip points at xem, “I told you that it was nothing more than a flimsy little piece of scrap metal!”
“You don’t get it, Tip! You wouldn’t understand what it’s like to have something special to you.” Bellflower hisses. Suddenly a large raindrop crashes down on Bellflower, completely soaking him from head to toe. Tulip impishly laughs at him, then a large raindrop lands on xem as well. All three of them look up at the sky. Bel gulps,
“That’s not good.” He looks at Tip, “Hey! You’re a water fairy, aren’tcha?! How about you do one of those water umbrella thingies and stop us from getting soaked?!”
“W-well-!!!” Tip frantically looks around, “I-!!! … I never learned how to do that…”
“What?!” Bel snarls at xem, then gets pelted with raindrops, “Aaaaugh!!!” All three of them try to cover themselves from the heavy rain.
Bel flies up and pulls Cream by two locks of mane to navigate him in a certain direction, “We have to get out of here NOW.” Cream whinnies then gallops away while Ice and Tip hold onto each other. Bel scans the ground, narrowing his eyes, suddenly he pulls Cream’s locks of mane to bring him to a stop. Cream skids to a halt, his hooves scraping the ground, causing mud to mound up.
“C’mon, everyone get inside!” Bellflower tries to use his wings, but the rain is too much, “Augh!” Tulip pulls Ice’s arm, rushing to the top of Cream’s head,
“Icy, we’re going to have to jump. We can’t fly because our wings can’t withstand the rain.”
“What?! Why can’t you guys just give me more of that fairy dust so I can float down?! I-I could carry you both to the ground!” Ice gulps, very afraid of heights.
“That… that’s a great idea!” Tulip says, patting xis wings for more fairy dust. Bellflower watches the two of them interact, feeling left out and bitter. He makes his way over to them and pats his wings as well to add fairy dust onto Ice.
“I have it taken care of, Bellflower.” Tip sneers at him.
“Well, maybe he needs more of it!” Bel hisses. Ice takes the other two gentlemen by the waist, startling them a bit and making them blush. They both look up at Ice, who looks determined to get them all out of the violent rain. Ice inhales,
“Ready?”
The other two nod.
“Here we… GOOOOO!!!” Ice jumps off of Cream, floating for a split second, then falling to the ground. They all scream and hold onto each other. Ice does everything he can to stay in the air! Finally, they slow down and gently land on the ground. Ice tries to catch his breath. Tulip is clinging to him, xis arms and legs wrapped around him. Bellflower is dreamily holding onto Ice with their head on his chest. Bel blinks a few times then gasps and points at their door,
“Get inside! Quick!”
“You live in a tree?” Ice asks. Bel opens the door on the stump of the tree,
“Yeah?! So?! Get inside!” The three of them rush inside as Bel closes the door. The three gentlemen stumble inside and try to catch their breath. Bellflower fumbles around looking for a lantern to light. Finally, he finds a little lantern to set ablaze, setting off a chain reaction so the entire house is lit up with beautiful twinkling little lights.
To be continued… (I lost steam writing this fic, but I’ll edit and reblog it once I finish it!)

Fake Dating -> JanAUary
word count: 1294
blurb: Caitie helps Bob out when he almost gets caught in a lie.
Tumblr media
Apparently a hockey game wasn’t many people’s ideal Valentine’s Day date—last minute tickets had been cheap enough that the singles trio of Bob, Doug, and Caitie were able to score three decent seats to the Maple Leafs game.
Doug had convinced them that snacks wouldn’t be so cheap though, and that they could smuggle in some small bags rather than pay for food inside the stadium. So they took a trip to the grocery store the day before, perusing the aisles for bags of treats small enough to sneak in.
Doug went off to the chip aisle while Caitie followed Bob to the candy, but she left a minute or two ago to check out the trail mix, leaving him alone to look over the little bags of sweets. He was so distracted he didn’t notice the sound of footsteps approaching him in the empty aisle.
“McKenzie.” The voice of the greeting made Bob’s back go rigid, had him turning around with a startled glare.
It was Sean LaDue, a general bully growing up who had turned into the strongest player on the rivaling town's hockey team, followed by his younger brother. Sean had slammed Bob against the glass more times than he could count, but even that was less annoying than the general condescension he always used.
Sean nodded to the gummy bears in Bob’s hand. “You eat that crap between games, it’s no wonder you play so badly.”
“Oh yeah?” Bob put on his best tough guy voice as he looked up at Sean. “So like, why are you in the candy aisle then, eh?”
Sean held up a pink bag of mixed chocolates with a smug look. “Tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day, these are for my girlfriend.” He let out a snort of laughter. “I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess you don’t have any plans for tomorrow.”
“Well, like, you’re wrong, eh. Goin’ to the Leafs game.”
“Plans with that idiot brother of yours don’t count.”
“Doug isn’t no idiot, and it isn’t just us two, eh. ‘Cause like, my girlfriend’s comin’ along too.” It was a stupid thing to say, but the lie he wished was truth slipped out before he could stop it.
“Oh yeah?” Sean’s eyes narrowed. “What’s your girlfriend’s name?”
He knew he shouldn’t say it, knew he should back out of the lie, tell Sean she wasn’t technically his girlfriend… “Caitie.”
“Uh huh. I’ll bet she even came with an air pump to blow her up for you and everything.”
“Take off.” Bob sneered. He saw Sean’s gaze shift behind him and turned to see Caitie coming back down the aisle, stopping right next to Bob, oblivious to the whole situation.
“Would you eat honey roasted peanuts?” she asked him, showing him the box of little packets she brought with her. ”They don’t sell them individually, so I won’t get ‘em if you guys don’t want any.”
“Um,” His gaze flicked to Sean, who was watching them doubtfully. “I… yeah. I like those. Let’s go, huh?”
She laughed. “I didn’t get to look at the candy. Besides, I told Doug to meet us in this aisle.”
Sean stepped a little closer. “What, McKenzie, you’re not gonna introduce me?”
Caitie’s eyes widened a little, looking between the two men, clearly realizing she’d missed something.
His stomach dropped; the jig was no doubt up. “Yeah, um,” Bob gestured to Sean, “Caitie, this is Sean LaDue. We went to school together and stuff.” He was sure she’d remember the name from the few stories he’d told her about him—she was good with things like that. Sure enough, he saw the surprise in her eyes turn into a poorly-hidden scowl. “Sean, this is Caitie—”
“The girlfriend.” Sean nodded. “Bob was just telling me about you.”
Caitie looked at Bob, seemingly waiting for him to step in, to correct the title. But all he did was look up at her with pleading eyes, trying to silently apologize and ask her not to humiliate him all at once.
Still, it was a lot to ask. He was pretty sure she wouldn’t want to go along with it, wouldn’t want to risk word getting around that they were dating—
“Oh, he was?” The words were simple, but the way she sidled closer to Bob, slinking an arm around his waist, said more than he could’ve asked for. His face warmed as she gently tugged him closer, urging him to relax against her side. His face was so warm, he was sure it was going red.
The smug look of Sean’s finally fell. “Yeah. Didn’t know he had a girlfriend.” He cleared his throat, straightening a little as Bob wrapped his arm around Caitie. “Some romantic valentine’s date he’s taking you on. A hockey game with his brother?”
Caitie laughed. “Oh, well… not that I’d mind, but that’s not our date. We’re going to dinner in the city in the evening.” She looked down at Bob with a soft smile. “He even bought me a dress and everything.” She raised a shoulder, turning back to Sean. “I told him not to, but he’s always spoiling me.”
If Bob wasn’t already in love with her, he would’ve fallen right then and there in the candy aisle. Not only was she going along with his lie, but she was making him look like the best boyfriend around.
He smiled, trying not to gloat. “Well hey, only the best for my girl, eh.”
The look she gave him told him she was having fun with all of this, that she knew exactly how good it felt for him to rub their perfect relationship in Sean’s face, whether it was real or not. “You’re always using that excuse,” she said, leaning down and pressing a short, warm kiss against his cheek. His heart skipped in his chest, breath catching. He swore he could feel her lips there even after they were gone.
“Well… Nice meeting you. See you at the next game, McKenzie.” Sean nodded a goodbye, sending one last skeptical look at Caitie before turning around and leaving the aisle.
For once in his life, Bob felt like he'd had a conversation with a LaDue without coming out on the losing end. His cheek still tingling, he let his arm fall from around her, though he wanted to pull her into a hug. “Thanks, eh. You like, didn’t have to do that—it was real nice of you.”
She laughed softly, reaching out to brush her thumb against his cheek—her lipstick must’ve left a stain behind, he realized. Part of him wanted to tell her just to leave it. “You don’t think the kiss was overkill?”
He shook his head. If anything, he wished she’d just gone ahead and kissed him on the lips. “Sorry I told him we was datin’. I wasn’t thinkin’—he was just bein’ such a hose.”
Caitie shrugged, smiling as she finished cleaning his face. “I don’t mind. Though, I think you’re a little out of my league.”
He thought she was being sarcastic until he noticed the soft look in her eyes. Before he could say anything, her gaze shifted, eyes widening, urging him to turn and see what had her so stunned.
It was Doug, of course, walking into the aisle with arms filled with bags of chips that were far too big for sneaking anywhere, and a pint of ice cream to top it all off. As Caitie burst into laughter and headed over to help him, asking how exactly he was planning to hide a family sized bag of Funyuns in his flannel, Bob stayed back for a moment, promising that someday he’d get the nerve to ask if that meant she’d give him a chance as a real boyfriend.
