Hi this is where I talk a bunch about ocs :D

I dont have a lot of time lately to talk abt lore but i still think abt my guys whenever i have some chill time to myself, so here's some patch notes. This is also just me thinking out loud haha

CD:

ive been playing w some changes for CD and seeing if they stick :] gonna make the story slightly more complex and the sides of the conflict also different (for example I am going to make hades and talas full on enemies at first along with connon, caval and silas >:3 (and I am also making silas and his monster form two separate characters so the lion (hal) is now a mount instead))

Specifically what I've been thinking about is making Hades either a ship captain or a first mate for a rogue ship. The deal with Hades is that he comes from a renowned family from Redbridge and is a disgrace to them. In previous versions of CD they were artisans but that never rly clicked for me, and recently I have been reworking Redbridge into a naval empire to add some 🤏spice 🤏to the world, which would mean Hades' family is actually a naval captain family putting him next in line to be one of them but since his thing is being a disgrace he takes off and becomes a rogue. And instead of hating leviathans he fucking hates hunters instead. Conversely, I think with these changes Talas would also NOT be inclined to kill hunters (or at least not as often as he currently does). He'd pick fights with the naval fleet and other similar factions instead which is more like his character.

I also wanna try and bring back an older concept I had where connon's ship was able to both become fully submerged (like the subs in sunless sea where her character originated from) and this other idea I had where a ship could split in half into two smaller ships. Like if a catamaran could split into two and flank a vessel on both sides. But we'll see if I can make this work x)

Dragons (broken horizon + extinction):

I vaguely mentioned this a while ago as well but I've also been thinking abt my dragons and how I kinda want them to all be in one world/setting, which includes both my broken horizon guys (cer, jarek, octane, etc) and my extinction guys (alex, c, orion, etc) but I dont know how to deal with all of the conflicting lore and themes.

Because for extinction the big theme is there are people who can turn into dragons, and technically all of the dragons' powers are based on energy (for lore reasons). Meanwhile for my other dragons I have a few different elements or other ways of using fire (eg instead of using straight up fire/energy, my oc Jarek can breathe out gas only and ignites it with his mandibles).

I miss all my dragons a lot so I kinda wanted to make a world for them where I could have them Vibe and do different stories in so I thought about having a dragon-only universe but unfortunately Extinction has a pretty huge human element that I cant just eliminate.

It feels counterintuitive, i know the first logical choice is 'just let them be different things' but I genuinely feel like the right choice is to put them both together so the characters can interact and the whole story can be deeper because as it is both are really shallow and I would really like for them to work together so that's what I've been picking at for some months now (it's um. been real slow)

For these two stories I do have two different vibes though that I've been wondering how to weave together nicely bc they overlap for some characters. For broken horizon I had flying and aerial racing as a big theme (and some of the chars in extinction would be rly into that) and for extinction I had dragon arena fights as a big theme (and some of the characters in bh would be rly into that) both of these is another of the reasons why I wanted to put them both together bc it feels like they can fit very well I just have to find the right idea for them to click and then itll be smooth sailing -w-

I also wanted to talk abt this in hopes that talking abt all the dragons gets me to think more about them as well

I wanted to make this post bc I've been really busy lately and rly absent from here in general and I don't have as much time to draw (or even think abt ocs) anymore but I still wanted to keep posted about what's been going on in my head and hopefully get some eyes on it and maybe even some feedback if anyone is so inclined

WAS writing it out in the tags of that last post i RBd but I’m going to put it here. im working on getting or atleast sourcing a copy of 2001 on every video format it’s been released on. i physically have three at the moment, and they were fairly obvious to source: a dvd, a blu ray, and a vhs tape. all were sealed! ive watched the dvd and bluray ofc but im keeping the tape sealed, just because i think that’s really cool. 

but anyway sourcing a Beta tape for 2001 has been… difficult to say the least. i can’t buy from the US only the UK due to import taxes even if I had the money to buy this stuff. ive seen one or two of them around but generally quite expensive for what it is - oddly enough I’ve found beta tapes of 2010 for much cheaper, even though presumably even less would’ve been made.

ive found SEVERAL CEDs for 2001. same with laserdiscs (ive seen CAV iirc, not sure about CLV) which makes a lot of sense given that laserdisc and CED were always marketed to film weirdos - home video wasn’t really a thing when those were envisioned, and people don’t have players for them

beta has been difficult to find. im guessing this is probably because beta didn’t have much of a market infiltration in the uk so they’re not floating around here? friend with huge VHS collection has 0 beta tapes, i don’t think ive ever seen them around when i go charity shopping hunting either. it’s been far easier to find them in other countries

the only VCD/CD video ive found was from mid Europe, cost way too much to justify buying (+postage) for a frankly Just Bad format but i also totally want it. so hey.

i do not own a 4K UHD version. i know one exists, but it’s probably the least of my problems given that the rest of these are going to be much harder to get ahold of. really I could just walk into HMV and get one any time i wanted, hence the others are of more interest to me

i have seen HD-DVD releases around. this is again probably one of my lesser worries in sourcing this collection, seeing as hddvd was a ‘fairly recent’ format. they’re on eBay, you can get them, it’s cool. not really a worry

now onto the weird bits; things it hasn’t been released on:

NO UMD release!!!!! you can get 28 days later, american psycho, A FUCKING CLOCKWORK ORANGE, on UMD, but not 2001. it really feels like they dropped a ball with this, and it pisses me off. if I HAD to guess why this happened, it would be because of the sheer runtime (2h22min off the top of my head, I don’t have my dvd with me to check rn) 

obviously no videonow, GBAvideo, minidvd etc due to size and probably also demographic. also, very likely no flexplay, but who cares anyway. I don’t really count that as it’s own format, it was kinda just a new kind of DRM. same for DIVX, which is just a DVD with fancy DRM. i want to be able to reasonably play all of this media if I had the players.

no VMD release from what I can tell either, but hell, only like 10 movies were released on that anyway. given VMDs purported 50+gb of storage (by NME anyway) you’d think they’d want to put it on there to impress people, but apparently not.

there’s a lot that im not able to find info on. there was a lot of weird video stuff in the 80s and 90s that never saw the light of day outside of some limited releases, and a lot of that hasn’t been catalogued on the internet because nobody but some random guy wants to know whether a specific film was released on them. a lot of these experimental or weird kinds were from japan, who obviously had issues w tapes because of the humid climate (hence their big focus on discs - minidisc, laserdisc, you name it), and it’s hard to say and probably unlikely whether they could’ve gotten the licensing rights to put 2001 on them for a limited run and not a recent Japanese film.

we (me and a friend) think burning to videonow would be possible if we can track down the software used. it would be very close to VCD in terms of quality, BUT it would be very funny to do so and would likely involve compressing the DVD edition to fit on a CD, which would then be placed in a Slightly modded videonow. we’d need another videonow to do this, OR we would have to experiment by cutting up CDs seeing as data is recorded on these linearly. this may also be possible with UMD, but I don’t know enough about UMD to know whether it could be jury-rigged burnt to with a DVD burner. either way, it would be incredibly compressed and awful to watch, but just fucking delightful for the memes. 

side note: ive always thought it would be genuinely fucking hilarious to have 2001 on bluray and 2010, the worse movie, on hddvd, the losing format, BUT i haven’t been able to find rewritable hddvds to do this with. unfortunately, I think they’ve all just been swallowed up, which is sad for my dreams, but it’s possible I may find some… some day <3

side note two: would love vinyl and CD (though probably couldn’t find cassette) of the soundtrack. this probably wouldn’t be hard to find though. bonus points if I could find Alex north’s original 2001 score on CD and Vinyl; I BELIEVE there was a CD release but im unsure about vinyl tbh

so those are my musings on 2001 on as many different video formats as i could find.  i will do it one day. when i have a job.

I recently came across a bunch of press articles and photos about Oscar Isaac that are so old, they appear to be out-of-print and pre-date social media. Considering they were probably never digitally transcribed for internet access, I’m guessing that the majority of current fans have never seen this stuff.

Even though a lot of these digital scans are challenging to read because they are the original fuzzy news print, I think there some gems worth sharing with you guys. Over the next several weeks, I will transcribe and share those gems on this page. Hope you enjoy them!

Let’s start with this fantastic 2001 profile piece done before Oscar was accepted into Juilliard:

South Florida’s rising star isn’t just acting the part

As fifth-graders at Westminster Christian School in Miami, Oscar Isaac and his classmates were asked to write a story as if they were animals on Noah’s Ark. Oscar turned in a seven-page play – with original music – from the perspective of a platypus. Then he starred in the production his teacher directed.

He hasn’t stopped expressing himself creatively since. Today, Isaac is one of South Florida’s busiest young theater actors, and certainly its hottest. And not just because he’s a slender five-feet nine-inches tall with an expressively handsome face and glistening brown eyes.

Since making his professional debut as a Cuban hustler in Sleepwalkers at Area Stage in July 1999, he has played an explosive Vietnam vet in Private Wars for Horizons Repertory, a pot-smoking slacker in This Is Our Youth at GableStage, another Cuban on the make in Praying With the Enemy at the Coconut Grove Playhouse, the entrancing narrator of Side Man at GableStage, a Havana-based writer in Arrivals and Departures for the new Oye Rep and, most recently, a young Fidel Castro in When It’s Cocktail Time in Cuba at New York’s Cherry Lane Theater.

Beginning Wednesday, he’ll be juggling five roles in City Theatre’s annual Winter Shorts festival, first at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach, then at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. But that is not all: During the two weeks he is doing Winter Shorts, he’ll also be playing dates with the punk-ska band The Blinking Underdogs (www.blinkingunderdogs.com), which features him as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter.

Oh, and he just got back from auditioning for New York’s prestigious Juilliard School of Drama.

All this for a guy a month shy of his 22nd birthday.

Sure, you could hate a guy who’s that talented, that charismatic, that transparently ambitious. But the people who have worked with Oscar Isaac don’t. On the contrary, they’re all sure he has it – that magical, can’t-be-taught thing that transforms an actor into a star.

Playwright Eduardo Machado, who put in a good word for Isaac at Juilliard, says “he does have that star quality that makes your eyes go to him. It’s great that someone with that talent still wants to train.”

“He has a star quality that’s rare in a young actor,” adds Joseph Adler, who directed him in Side Man and This Is Our Youth. “Without a doubt I expect to be hearing great things from him.”

‘I JUST LOVE CREATING’

Isaac, who also makes short films, can’t say exactly why he was attracted to acting. He just knows it makes him happier than anything, that it’s what he was meant to do. And he’s been doing it since he was a 4-year-old putting on plays in his family’s backyard with his sister Nicole.

“I just love creating, whether it’s music or films or a character on a stage. I love taking people for a ride,” he says. “In Side Man, every night I would love being that close to the audience. I felt like I was talking to 80 of my closest friends.

“I could feel what the audience was feeling.”

His powerful, mournful-yet-loving monologue near the end of the play, he said, “worked every night. I knew it would get them. I’d hear sniffles.

“But it had less to do with me than with the atmosphere [created by the playwright and director].”

You could understand if Isaac, surrounded as he is by praise and possibility, had an ego as burgeoning as his career. Instead, he channels the positive reinforcement into confidence about his work.

“He has such a charm and an ease onstage, but he’s very modest,” says New York-based actress Judith Delgado, who shared the stage with Isaac in Side Man. “He’s hungry. He’s got moxie. I was blown away by him.

“He saved me a couple of times. I went up [forgot a line] and that baby boy of mine came through. He’s a joy.”

FORGING HIS OWN PATH

The son of a Cuban-American father and a Guatemalan mother, Isaac was never a stellar student. But he found ways of turning routine assignments – like the Noah’s Ark story – into creative challenges.

His science reports were inevitably video documentaries underscored with punk music. He acted through middle and high school, though he had a falling out with his drama teacher at Santaluces Community High in Lantana over his misgivings about a character. When she refused to cast him in anything else, he got his English teacher to let him play the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors his senior year.

His skepticism about authority and love of playing the devil’s advocate have long made him resist doing things the usual way. His post-high school “training” consisted of one semester at Miami-Dade Community College’s South Campus (where he met his girlfriend, Maria Miranda), touring schools playing an abusive character in the Coconut Grove Playhouse’s Breaking the Cycle, and working as a transporter of bodies at Baptist Hospital, where he absorbed the drama of people in emotionally intense situations.

“It was the most magnificent dramatic institute I could’ve attended,” Isaac said. “I was able to observe the entire spectrum of human emotion, people under the most extreme duress. I was mesmerized watching the way people interacted with each other in such heightened situations.

“I learned everything about the human condition, and it was real and harsh and brutally honest.”

Yet even given his propensity for forging his own path, something nudged him another direction while he was in New York making his Off-Broadway debut in December. Walking by Juilliard one day, he impulsively went in to ask for an application. Though the application deadline had passed, Isaac persuaded Juilliard to accept his, noting in his application essay that most of the exceptional actors he admires had acquired “a brutally efficient technique” to enhance their talent by studying at places like Juilliard.

Though he won’t know whether he has been accepted until the end of this month, his audition last weekend went well, he says. He did monologues from Henry IV, Part I and Dancing at Lughnasa, adjusting his Shakespearean Hotspur to a more fiery temperature at the suggestion of Michael Kahn, head of Juilliard’s acting program – though not without arguing that Hotspur wouldn’t be speaking to the king that way.

Isaac, not surprisingly, loves a good debate.

Adler, GableStage’s artistic director and a man who is as liberal as Isaac once was conservative, savored the verbal jousting they did during rehearsals for Side Man.

“He knows exactly how to pull my chain,” Adler says with a laugh. “Intelligence is the cornerstone of all great actors, and he’s bright as hell.

“He has relentless ambition but with so much charm. He’s very hard to say no to. He has incredible raw talent and magnetism that is very rare in a young actor along with relentless energy, perseverance and ambition. I see his growth both onstage and off. He’s mature in both places.”

Part of his growth, of course, will necessarily involve dealing with the rejections that are part of any actor’s life. His career is still too new, his string of successes solid, so it’s anyone’s guess how failure will shape him. But director Michael John Garcés, who picked him for When It’s Cocktail Time in Cuba after Isaac flew to New York at his own expense to compete with a pool of seasoned Manhattan actors for the role, believes his character will see him through.

“Oscar is realistic, but he’s so willing to go the whole nine yards,” Garcés says. “He didn’t go out when he was in the show here. His focus earned the respect of the other actors, some of whom have been working in New York for 30 years.

“He hasn’t had a lot of blows yet, when the career knocks the wind out of you. But he has talent, determination and focus, and if he has perseverance – my intuition is that he does have it – he could achieve a lot.”

FAMILY TIES

His father and namesake, Baptist Hospital intensive-care physician Oscar Isaac Hernandez, couldn’t be more proud. (Isaac doesn’t use the family surname in order to avoid, in his words, being “put in that Hispanic actor box.”)

“I’m ecstatic that he’s probably going to be going to the most prestigious drama school in the United States,” he says. “School will help him focus his energies and give him discipline. He’s got the raw material and the drive.”

Isaac’s mother, Maria, divorced from his father since 1992, is a kidney-transplant recipient who acknowledges that she’ll miss her son if he moves to New York. But, she adds, she wants him “to live out his dreams. He amazes me every day. He calls me every day. I’m very proud of him.”

Even the other guys in The Blinking Underdogs are fans of Isaac’s acting, though it could take him away from South Florida just as the band appears to be, Isaac says, on the brink of signing a recording deal (it has already put out its own CD, The Last Word, with songs, lead vocals and even cover photography by Isaac.

“Oscar’s the leader of the band, a great musician who amazes me and motivates us,” says sax player Keith Cooper. “I’ve been to see every one of his plays. He’s a phenomenal actor.

“I completely buy into his role in every play. As close as I am to him, I forget it’s Oscar.”

His South Florida theater colleagues credit that to Isaac’s insatiable desire to learn and grow.

Gail Garrisan, who is directing him in Donnie and One of the Great Ones for Winter Shorts, observes, “It’s not often that you find a young actor who is willing to listen and who doesn’t think he knows everything. He loves the work.

“He really brought the young man in Side Man to life. When I saw it in New York, it seemed to be the father’s play. When I saw it here, I felt it was his [Isaac’s] play.”

Oye Rep’s John Rodaz, whom Isaac calls “the best director I’ve ever worked with,” gave the actor his first important job in Sleepwalkers at Area Stage. They met when Isaac came to see Area’s production of Oleanna and the actor, knowing Rodaz ran the theater, introduced himself.

“He has so much energy and such a sparkling personality,” Rodaz says. “He knows how to move in the world. He seems to take advantage of every situation in a good way; he’s not a cold, calculating person who’ll stab you in the back.

“[But] he wants it so badly. Everything he does, he’s the leader. When I was 21, I was taking naps.”

Rodaz coached Isaac on his Juilliard monologues and found the experience energizing.

“I got chills just watching him. That happens so rarely. I was so exhilarated when I came home that I just had to go out and run. You just know he’s got all the tools.”

Hakuoki Yuugiroku Drama - Thumb-Sized Samurai Tracks 1-4 (of 7)

This is my last post of the month, so I’ll end by asking you to please support me if you can through my ko-fi, and paypal or patreon which provides access to my hakuoki blog translations and early access to my postings. Well... I’m finally done with all that i can translate for this drama. posting these tracks all together since im unable to continue translating the rest of this by myself... which is something i wouldn’t normally do because i prefer splitting tracks up for more items on my queue, tho that’s also a side-effect of me usually not being able to stay focused on one drama... not sure when i’ll get to the subtitle videos for these since im still pretty busy (while i have the first 3 tracks of this drama subtitled [unedited], at this rate, i might just wait for when finals are done and just focus on all my videos in bulk then... plus ive yet to receive the tl for track 6 and 7 [and need someone else to go over where the voices overlap in track 5], so that will likely cause further delays to the videos for this drama).

also i totally caved in and exchanged points for the yuukoku no moriarty stage play file with chinese subs that someone finished translating recently and bought the blu-ray for the 2nd musical. havent craved more content from a fandom this badly since about a few months before i decided that i would start translating hakuoki stuff lol.

Harada: So that's it/all, Hijikata-san, that's all I can report on. Sure enough/As expected, the team members' most pressing concern is the security of headquarters.

Saito: My opinions/suggestions are almost the same/similar/the same as Sano's. I believe that we need to improve our defences against intruders.

Hijikata: Is that so. I understand what you guys are saying. Harada and Saito, you've worked hard....... That being said, it's difficult to completely prevent intruders from coming in. This place is a temple, not a fortress. Even if we installed a fence now, that isn't really a good plan.

Saito:.....So what you're saying is......

Harada: But, shouldn't the area around Chizuru's room at least be fortified? It is true that someone is after her.

Saito: Kazama Chikage, Amagri and Shiranui [check audio], the self-proclaimed group of oni......

Hijikata:......Indeed. In short I need to consult with Kondou-san about this....... Then, that'll be it for today's report.

Saito: Then I'll go make some tea. You should rest first. Sano, you should also drink some.

Harada: Don't get angry, I was just kidding. (sips tea).......but, like Hijikata-san said, the taste of this tea really is odd/strange [tl says 'subtle']......

Saito: Strange? How could that be...... (sips tea)....!!

Harada: What's wrong? You've suddenly become quiet.

Saito: This taste is of...... Ishida Sanyaku ！？

Hijikata: Ahaha, I was thinking that this tasted a bit familiar, so that's what it was........ wa, wait! Why was that put into the tea!?

Harada: Saito..... you bastard, did you actually put Ishida Sanyaku into tea/you didn't actually put Ishida Sanyaku into tea did you? Even if you love that stuff, you should know when to stop before going too far [idiom. rephrase later]!

Saito: No......I would remember doing something like that. I only saw that the teapot lid was open, that there were tea leaves already inside, and that I was thinking how it could easily be brought over to be used......

Hijikata:......There was already tea inside? Did you notice if there was something strange/weird in the surroundings?

Saito: Speaking of which........ I saw something, I thought it was garbage so I ignored it, I think I remember how a note there was a written note saying "dedicated/specially for my wife. Dogs are strictly prohibited to touch this" or something like that.......

Hijikata: What, those words. From where do they....seem... familiar.......

(Hijikata collapses)

Saito: Vice-Commander!!

Harada: oi~ oi!! What's wrong, Hijikata-san! Why are you/why did you suddenly....... falling/collapsing/fall/collapse......!!

Souji: Ha...... good grief, this is a real problem. I've long wanted to say this, but why is it necessary for us to submit a report about our patrols when nothing unusual happened?

Heisuke: I actually think that way too. But nothing can be done about this because of the rules~

Souji: Anyway, if nothing unusual happens, isn't it enough for Heisuke to make the report/that you make the report, Heisuke? I don't think I should be involved in giving it~

Heisuke: You just don't want to go to Hijikata-san's room. If you were giving a report to Kondou-san, you'd obviously be very happy.

Souji: That's because Hijikata-san sees me he won't stop talking as soon as he sees me. Before this, all I did was secretly prepared some ink and smeared a stone into it so that it turned black. He surprisingly became furious at me.

Heisuke:......Anyone who experienced this kind of thing would get really angry.......  Hijikata-san, we're coming in. (they stop walking and open a door) Hey~ Hijikata-san~! Eh? Ah? It seems that he isn't here?

Souji:......But, doesn't it look like he was was recently in the room? Look, something spilled on to the floor.

Heisuke: What~? Is it possible that he wasn't careful and spilled his teacup, then panicked as he left to go and get a towel to dry this?

Souji: Maybe. Anyhow/Speaking of which...... besides the tea, there seems to be some other strange thing on the floor...... What is this?

Heisuke:......Hijikata-san, Sano-san, and Hajime-kun? What are these, these puppets/figurines [or dolls] look very well made. These might be Hijikata-san's things, so it'd be better not to touch them.

Souji: Anyway it seems like he's not in his room right now. Nothing to be done about it then~ [we'll] hand in our report later.

Heisuke: Yeah. Really, just where did he go......

Saito:.......Mm...mrgh... S-Sano?

Saito: In other words, this is all that guy's fault?! Making all of our bodies smaller, what do you intend on doing?!

Kazama: It has nothing to do with you. I was only looking for my wife.... Yes, only just my wife.... That damn vile medicine!! To actually make turn me into this inferior article!!

Hijikata: Although I don't get why you're so upset, quit rambling, and hurry up and tell us the way to get us back to normal!

Kazama:.......Che.

Saito: You still won't talk. Then violence can be the only answer [reword later. don't like how it reads]...!

Harada: Hold it, Saito!

Saito: Why are you stopping me, Sano! If we don't get the answer out of that guy's mouth, we won't be able to get our bodies back to normal!

Harada: Don't you think it's a bit strange? Kazama was originally the culprit with that medicine, but why is that guy so small now? If he was able to get back to normal, he already would have done that!

Hijikata: Co-Could it be.... you're not going to say that you don't know how to get us back to normal, right!

Kazama:  Did you finally realize it? You idiots with no intelligence!

Harada: Uwah....... I really want to beat him up......

Saito: Vice-Commander, please give me the order to cut that guy down!

Kazama: Che, listen to me! It's not that I don't know how to restore us to our original states. It's just that this method will be extremely difficult to accomplish.

Hijikata:……Difficult [Difficult how]……?

Kazama: It's simple to get back to our original states. The teapot with the medicine in it is still in the kitchen. We just need to drink more of that medicine, the "New and Improved Ishida Sanyaku."

Harada: I feel that I want to complain about the name of that medicine since it's a bit too subtle.... But will that really work?!

Kazama: Of course. As I possess the noble bloodline of the oni, it's impossible for me to lie.

Hijikata: For the time being, we'll believe what you say. For the time being, we'll believe what you say. You said it'd be difficult, but shouldn't being able to get into the kitchen smoothly, be the only problem? 

Saito: Indeed. Just from the drop to the ground, which looks as high a wall, you can definitely infer how difficult it will be to get to the kitchen...

Kazama: That's right. As a dog who can only wag his head and wag his tail, that ability to understand is really good.

Harada: How is it that I feel angry whenever I hear you say something nasty [reword later].... Well, since we're like this, if we have more people, we'll be able to solve this problem sooner.

Hijikata: Speaking of which...... if someone would pass by/if someone just passed by......

(voices heard in distance)

Souji: Eh~ really, I don't always want to be doing this every time~

Heisuke: Don't say that. Hijikata-san should be back at his room now, right?

Hijikata: Those voices just now...... are Souji and Heisuke's?

Saito: Souji! Heisuke! Come here......! Mmph......! (mouth gets covered by Harada)

Harada: Don't be impulsive, Saito!!

Saito (weakly) What are you doing......!

Harada: I'm telling you/Listen [to me], just think about it! Even if Heisuke helps, the other person there is Souji!

Hijikata: If that guy finds out that we're tiny/this small, who knows how he would react!

Saito: (gasps and moves Harada's hand away) Ha...... Indeed, he'd treat us like toys and handle us as if we were straw...... just imagining that gives me the chills [reword later]......

Kazama: Che, as expected of a pack of dogs made up of rogues and villains. It's amazing that how you don't even have confidence/trust in your own companions.

Hijikata: Shut up! Under these circumstances...! Perhaps Souji is the only exception!

Harada: In the first place, what should we be doing, Hijikata-san? We have to do something, so should we just tell Heisuke about what happened?

Hijikata: Uh………… No, let's pretend to be dolls for a while. After, we can wait for Yamazaki or maybe Gen-san....... ah, there's still Chizuru, [but] we should wait for someone reasonable to pass by.

Kazama: What are you saying? You're actually telling me to pretend to be a doll [reword later]!?

Hijikata; Shut up and just do as I say! Even if it's you, if you can't get back to normal, won't you have a lot of problems!

Kazama: Che. There's nothing to be done/that can be done about it then.

Harada: Heisuke's coming! Everyone stop talking!

Heisuke: Hijikata-san~!  Hah!? Still not here......

Okita: That's strange. I just heard a very quiet voice just now, so I thought Hajime-kun was here. (looks around) Anyhow, why have these dolls that were placed here, so scattered around [reword later/thesaurus]? Furthermore, this/And this strange doll with blond hair, I don't remember seeing it earlier.  

Toudou: What is this, a doll of Kazama? There's even one of one of Sano-san, but why isn't there one of these odd dolls of you or me, Souji?

(Heisuke pokes Kazama's head)

Kazama: You bastard......! The only one in the world who is allowed to touch me, is my wife...!

Harada: Come on, don't talk, just be patient!

Souji: These two figures look very much like Hijikata-san and Hajime-kun... Come look at them, they look pretty funny/interesting~

Saito:…………！

Okita: Nn? I seemed to have heard something strange?

Harada: Well since these are Hijikata-san's things, if you play around too much with them, he'll get super angry~

Heisuke: It's as you say though since they were already left in a mess, maybe that cat messed them up [reword later].

Souji: In that case, why don't we just put them all into a box? They can be also put into a closet where the cat won't be able to reach them.

Soup: a “Tesla + Bell + Edison + Mac” Medical Review

“You have a perfectly functional syringe pump with the PCA in the background, and you’re going to give him an injection with a metal needle? Also, if you’re gonna sedate him you might as well use the IV pump too??? Like, you have a whole ‘nother channel?? Most floor nurses would kill for that setup?” <--- From my notes on this ep.*

In case you didn’t see it, the story went like this: After being knocked unconscious trying to prevent Codex from stealing an encoded map to a Tesla-era WMD, Mac wakes to find he’s lost certain memories of the event that are crucial to interpreting the weapon’s location. In order to recover the memories and stop Codex from getting there first, Matty calls on a friend at DARPA who studies experimental memory-recovery drugs. Drugged, Mac enters a dream state to track down the memories, where he encounters his mother, a man he recently chose to kill to save everyone in LA, his high-school bully, and a darker version of himself who thinks Codex’s directive to kill an eighth of the population to save the world might not be too far off the mark.

So there’s a lot to talk about here medically. For this post, I’ll go into the concussion and its aftermath, the drug and it’s administration, and the medical technology that the Phoenix infirmary seems to have at its disposal.

The Concussion/Amnesia:

Mac is knocked out by a blow to the head. He wakes up “a few hours” later in the Phoenix infirmary. I’ve talked about concussions before (see here, here, and here), so I’m not going to go into too much detail about them in this post, but essentially if someone’s out for that long, they’re in trouble.

It’s reasonably common to lose consciousness in a concussion, but it’s usually only for seconds to minutes, and if it occurs at all, that person needs prompt medical evaluation in an emergency room. Even if there ends up being no major complications, like bleeding in the brain or an increase in pressure in the skull, the recovery time for concussions with a loss of consciousness can be in the weeks or months range. Someone who’s out for “hours” is looking at a stay in a neuro ICU and probably severe and possibly permanent brain damage. Like, it’s a season-long arc at least.

Since we’re not seeing that level of medical need, I think it would probably be safe to assume that Mac wasn’t actually out for “hours” as stated. He could have been briefly unconscious, as shown in the house attack scene, but then had trouble forming memories after that, which caused him to not remember the ride back to Phoenix very well, if at all. These are still concerning enough symptoms that I would have taken him to an emergency department instead of to the infirmary, but at least with that scenario there’s a possibility what happened to him isn’t actively life threatening outside of a neuro ICU.

Unlike the extended period of unconsciousness, the portrayal of amnesia isn’t far off the mark for once. The amnesia that Mac suffers is actually pretty reasonable- trouble remembering the incident and the events just before it is common in head injuries, as is having trouble forming new memories after. Not only is accurate amnesia something that I didn’t expect out of Rob Pearlstein (writer of the infamous Guts + Fuel + Hope), but it’s something that fiction as a whole (including, I’ll admit, 1985 MacGyver**) tends to struggle with. So kudos for that specific part of this episode, Pearlstein.

The Drug:

Even if we assume Mac wasn’t unconscious that whole time, the brief unconsciousness and memory problems indicate that he still had a pretty significant concussion that needed medical care and monitoring. I’m guessing that as advanced as the Phoenix Infirmary is, it doesn’t have the capacity to do neurosurgery or intracranial pressure monitoring. That means the Phoenix medical team’s priority in this situation would essentially be to catch any major, life-threatening complication as early as possible, and if one happened, get Mac to a hospital quickly enough to save him.

The best and lowest-tech tool they have to this end is repeated mental status exams. Mental status exams have the patient answer a series of questions like “what’s your name?” “what day is it?” “where are you right now?” “what happened to you/why am I asking you these questions?”  followed up with a series of mental tasks like counting backwards from 100 by 7s or making a logical decision based on a given scenario. If Mac’s answers significantly change, from one assessment to the next, that could mean he’s in trouble. 

Because these assessments rely so heavily on Mac’s ability to answer questions and perform tasks accurately, and they’re really the only thing that’s going to catch a serious problem early enough to save Mac’s life, the last thing you’d want to do is give him a drug cocktail that would alter his perception of where he is and what’s going on around him. I’ll just… leave that there.

But let’s assume that for some reason they have a non-CT way of assessing whether Mac’s about to die from a brain bleed while in a drug-induced dream state (they do appear to have limited EEG capability- can anyone tell me if this would still be helpful in the context of the drugs?). I’m not going to talk too much about the drug cocktail itself, since it was stated as fictional (so, essentially, anything they say it does it can probably do), but since they do reference it as containing DMT, I invite you to check out the erowid experience vault for DMT for stories of other people’s experiences with it.  

I will, however, talk a little about the administration of the drug. In the episode, a syringe with a needle is used to deliver the medication. Though not explicitly shown, I assume Dr. Cheryl inserted the metal needle into one of Mac’s arm veins and injected the drug.

Something that fiction generally doesn’t understand is that inserting a metal needle into a vein in order to administer medication doesn’t happen in a medical setting. Ever. The ONLY way to administer a medication IV in a medical setting is through an IV cannula- a short, flexible plastic tube inserted into a vein, often just colloquially called an “IV”:

If Mac had one of these ^^^, the syringe could attach to one of the blue and white pieces and the medication could be injected without worrying that the needle could slip out of the vein (many IV medications must be injected slowly over several minutes, and that’s a long time to hold a needle still).

Before Dr. Cheryl gives him the drug, she takes his vitals and asks him some questions, namely whether he has ever had “a psychotic break”, then, without explaining further, asks if he thinks he will become violent.

Now, it does make sense to ask someone about their psych history when administering a drug known to have psych side effects, because those can be a lot worse or more likely for people with certain psych histories. Think about SSRIs and SNRIs- they’re good antidepressants, but when given to someone with bipolar disorder, they can greatly increase the risk of a manic episode, and that possibility has to be evaluated before the drug is prescribed.

The conversation should have started with Dr. Cheryl asking everyone else to leave the room. Asking if someone has ever experienced psychosis in front of their coworkers, is not only a serious breach of patient privacy, but could also be incredibly dangerous. If Mac had experienced psychosis, but didn’t want his coworkers to know, he’d either have to lie and risk side effects without being able to prepare, or feel pressured to release that medical information and possibly risk his job or reputation***.

Then she’d ask something to the effect of “have you ever been diagnosed with a mental illness, been hospitalized for a mental health reason, or do you take any medications for a mental health problem?” And if the answer to that question was anything that would make the drug particularly dangerous to him, she’d probably tell him the risks and her assessment that it was a bad idea to proceed.

If there was no other option for some reason (I’d argue not the case in this situation), she’d tell him what the risks were, and only then would she possibly have to ask if he knew he might become aggressive, at which point they’d come up with how he’d like her to handle that possibility.

I know it’s not quite as snappy, but I would have really liked to see it.

Plus, unless it’s been asked off screen, Dr. Cheryl hasn’t asked him if he has any other health problems, if he takes any medications, or if he has any allergies, all of which could significantly impact how safe this drug could be for Mac.

Phoenix Infirmary Medical Tech

Now let’s look at some of the bits and pieces in the background of the episode. Particularly, I wanna talk about that chair, the IV pump, and the monitor.

So, chair first- it’s a dentist’s chair. It’s good for dental things and maybe some minor procedures (we have a slightly different chair in a doctor’s office I work at- we use it for things like implanting birth control, removing warts and moles, and providing wound care), but it’s not great for anything else. It’s especially not great if you have to sit there longer than a half hour. Considering we know from previous episodes that they have a full-on hospital bed somewhere at their disposal and possibly a couple of carts (narrower beds you see in the emergency department), I gotta say it makes literally no sense to put the guy who’s unconscious from a head injury in the procedure chair.

Next, the IV pump

We talked above about administering medications “IV push”- a medication “pushed” through an IV by a syringe, one dose at a time. Another way to give IV medication or fluids is via an IV drip or “piggyback”- the medication is diluted in a bag of saline or other IV fluid, and set to continuously run into a person’s IV. These are nice for doses of IV medication that have a lot of volume (like IV antibiotics) medication that wears off quickly and may need constant adjustment (like some kinds of sedation or some types of pain medication or medications that counteract shock), or just straight up IV fluids.

IV pumps control how fast the medication or fluid goes from the bag into the person. You can vaguely control this without a pump using gravity, a drip chamber, and a roller clamp, but if you need to know precisely how many milliliters of medication/fluid per hour is getting into a person, and you didn’t start your nursing career in the 1970s, you need a pump.

The one pictured above specifically consists of a central computer box (colloquially called a “brain”) where the pump rate can be programmed, flanked by interchangeable modules that each do a slightly different thing. The modules on the pump in the episode include an infusion pump, which essentially just pumps fluid from a bag hanging above it into a person, and a PCA pump. A PCA pump holds a syringe of medication (usually pain medication) and delivers a dose of it when the patient presses a button.

Honestly I think the whole things is just chillin’ in the background making the room look medical-y, but they really could have used it to continuously administer the drug or the sedation if they’d really wanted to incorporate it.

Side note, the modules are actually kind of heavy, so you have to balance them a little or the whole thing kinda tilts (see the screenshot from the episode). Also, for some reason if you stick an infusion module on the same side as a PCA module, the brain won’t recognize it half the time. Not sure if it’s a feature or a bug. Below is how someone who has ever once used one of these things would have set it up:

The other thing they have in the episode, and the last thing I’ll talk about before I let you get back to your life (I’m sure your cat misses you by now, mine sure does), is the monitor. 

I read several user manuals for this (real) monitor system in preparation for this post. I’ve concluded that it’s way, way above my med-surg pay grade, and usually used in operating rooms by anesthesiologists to monitor sedation level (so at least in theory they could be using it correctly? I’m as shocked as you are, really). I don’t even know what half those numbers mean (beyond the SpO2, heart rate, and respiratory rate), more than just being able to say they (surprisingly) do actually reflect real monitoring options on this thing. This leads me to believe this may be some kind of weird product placement thing? As if the gratuitous use of the Toyota backup cameras weren’t oddly forced enough.

Now, beyond the fact that this is a wildly high-tech, completely overkill machine for what is happening in the episode, the thing I would like to impress upon you is that regardless of the high tech-ness, every line on a monitor requires at least some attachment to the patient. Something measuring an EKG requires at least 3 leads on the patient. Something measuring oxygen saturation and pulse requires a clip on an ear or finger. Something measuring blood pressure requires a blood pressure cuff. Something measuring temperature usually means a probe somewhere the sun don’t shine. Mac has two little leads on his forehead. That is actually hilarious. He’d be covered in wires. He would have so much adhesive stuck to him.

In case you’re wondering, the heart/lungs/brain/person outline picture on the monitor just tells you how each part of the body is doing- like, the brain will turn yellow and then red if something starts going weird with the brain-related monitoring, same with the heart and lungs. It took an insane amount of searching to figure that out. I’ve been writing this post for 4 days now.

 *I had a much longer and rant-ier intro to this but I feel like I’ve complained enough on main about how the reboot dumbed down and politically neutralized an extremely opinionated and hardline character. I do really like this show, and the storylines are really interesting, but I need you all to understand how science-based and politically charged the original one was, especially in later seasons. You had such a platform for good here, CBS, and I’m hoping against hope the generic-action-show it’s become was some kind of weird, collective misunderstanding and not a censor problem. My main problem, having finished writing this post, is that he looks really weirdly good for someone who was unconscious with a head injury and then subjected to what was another few hours unconscious and hallucinating. hehe, so since im in a video game mood rn and thinking a lot about old video games/video games i love, if you were to ask me “hey ruby!!! what games/sequels/trilogies would you like to see remade???” well, here’s which ones i think should get remade: (this’ll be a pretty long post, so you can just click the link down below if ya want to read the whole thing)

out of any old final fantasy game that should get a remake like the final fantasy 7 remake, if i had to choose one, it would have to be final fantasy 6. that’s just one of my favorite final fantasy games (right up there with final fantasy 7, that is), and like. final fantasy 6 is kind of the perfect bridging gateway game between the fantasy/medieval/middle earth early final fantasy games (from 1-5) to the futuristic/modern/grounded to earth final fantasy games (7, 8, 10, 13 & 15), so like. realistically??? final fantasy 6 is probably one of the only few games i think should get a final fantasy 7 remake-esque remake, and it is one that i think can work in that realistic style compared to something like. final fantasy 9 or final fantasy 4, ngl

super mario rpg, obviously, id love to see that game get a remake. maybe with like, a lot more characters (luigi & wario would work perfectly in there), any content they had to cut out, maybe add more to the game that we didn’t even think of that could work (like, not just story padding, maybe stuff like the koopalings, daisy, wart from mario 2). idk, id just like a super mario rpg remake done in a similar style to the link’s awakening switch remake

despite how important these games are to mario’s history as they are the first original handheld mario platformers, as well as introducing wario, another important mario character, it’s kinda weird how nintendo hasn’t really paid much attention to the super mario land trilogy, or even the wario land series. and while i think a new wario land game will certainly get everybody (myself included) very excited, id also get excited if the original mario land series got an all stars-esque remake. heck, id get excited if all the wario land games got remade too in their own package (like, the mario land trilogy will just have mario land 1, 2 & 3, while the wario land remakes can either start out with mario land 3, or virtual boy wario land, or even wario land 2)

i think the original paper mario trilogy of the 2000s should get their own remake/upscaled ports to the switch as well. stuff like paper mario 64 should obviously get remade from the ground up, while stuff like the thousand year door & super paper mario should get like. upscaled graphics, or even new content (like in the thousand year door, there should be a whole sidequest or extra campaign dedicated to luigi’s own journeys that he goes on at the same time as mario’s, i think thatd b pretty neat & funny)

if any megaman game were to get a remake, i think they should be like. the original zero storyline megaman x games. like, ya know, megaman x1-5. and while ik games like megaman x1-3 already get a lot of love, and megaman x5 doesnt really get as much hatred (i think??? i never finished that game), i think megaman x4 should get a lot more love. not only is it my favorite megaman x game, but like. it has a pretty good storyline, each character gets their own unique story, and like. i just like a lot about megaman x4, i really do, and im sad it commonly gets referred to as the worst megaman x game just because of its voice acting. it gets a lot of flack for its voice acting, and honestly, if the voice acting was just mediocre or average, then i really think a lot more people will appreciate this game. like, in my eyes, if megaman x1-5 got remakes in the cel-shaded rendered style of megaman 11 or dragon ball fighterz, then thatd b cool. id also b down to a new megaman x game too aoisdjfiaos

ok, so, kirby games!!!! ik stuff like kirbys adventure & kirby’s super star got remakes, and while they’re great, id love to see more kirby games get remakes!!! and i got two seperate candidates that’d work. and that first one will be a remake of the “dark matter” trilogy of kirby games. games like kirby’s dream land 2, kirby’s dream land 3, & kirby 64. i think these games are pretty important in the kirby series as not only are these the first instance of the deep lore seen in later kirby games (stuff like return to dream land, planet robobot, and star allies), but like. dream land 2 was the first game to introduce kirbys animal allies, which have become staples for a lot of the kirby games (dream land 3, wow, thats all i could really think of oasidjfio). so like, yea!!! thatd b pretty epic

another kirby “trilogy” id love to see get remade or even get remasters of onto switch would have to be the “return to dream land” games. games like kirby’s return to dream land and even the 3ds games that were built off of that: kirby’s triple deluxe & kirby’s planet robobot. i mean, these games are fairly recent, and stuff like return to dream land isn’t even 10 years old yet. but like, i think if these games got upscaled graphics/models & resolution, as well as a bunch of new/cut content, it can also work

oooooooooooooooooo boy, there are a lot of sonic games id love to see get remade considering i think about sonic alot. stuff like sonic 3 & knuckles getting the sonic 1, 2 & cd treatment (get upgraded ports to ios & android, a bunch of new content from sonic mania, etc), as well as said sonic 1 & 2 mobile ports get released to steam or other consoles. itd be cool to see shadow the hedgehog get an upgraded port to the switch for a low price. maybe even see sonic x-treme get completed. but if theres any sonic game id love to see get a full on, worked from the ground up remake, it’d have to be the sonic dreamcast trilogy. and by that, i mean sonic games that were worked off of the same dreamcast technology/engine. games like sonic adventure 1, 2 & sonic heroes. and like, not just stuff like the gamecube or steam ports. i mean, full on remakes with updated models, updated animations & cutscenes, updated rendering, updated voice acting, updated everything!!! with that, id love to see the chao garden get a full blown overhaul, with more deeper chao breeding, more games to play with your chao, more special, unique chaos & even stuff like chao bonuses to the main campaigns. and even somethign that’d be cooler would be like. either free updates or DLC that would add more campaigns to these games with new characters (like the babylon rogues, the classic characters, silver & blaze, etc), and like. i KNOW thats a lot to work on, but like, i think a lot of people would appreciate that. plus, i consider the sonic adventure games would be a perfect introduction to the sonic series, i think these games could get a lot more people hooked onto the series!!! new & old fans alike!!! but, thats just my thots, and this would be impossible realistically. id still want it 2 happen tho 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

while ik everyone wants that gen iv remake, may i recommend a??? gen v remake??? pokemon black & white are still one of my favorite pokemon games, they were very close to me growing up, and i. just have so much goddamn appreciation and love for this game!!!! i think its one of game freaks more underappreciated games, and ik there a ton of people that can agree with me on that!!! it was just such a different and unique experience, with such a deep story, really good and underappreciated and underloved pokemon designs, and just. i’d love it if we really got a gen 5 remake, especially seeing how much game freak has been putting a lot more gen 5 nostalgia in all of their recent products (from a ton of gen 5 pokemon appearing in detective pikachu, to gen v pokemon getting galarian forms in pokemon sword & shield, and even gen v pokemon appearing in a lot more spin offs lately). like. trust me, pokemon black and white isn’t really as bad as people made it off to be in 2011. it really is a modern masterpiece in video games, i really recommend checking it out and begging game freak to give it a remake about as much as yinz have been begging game freak to remake diamond & pearl

obviously mario 64, sunshine, & galaxy 1 & 2 should get full on remakes. yinz know i wanted one this whole year, and im very disappointed we got these barely upgraded ports to switch instead. thats it on that, i dont need to go into further detail

DIR EN GREY 「2018.11.27」The insulated world talk event - Kyo [Part 2]

Hello I am back with part 2 of the transcript.

K- I don’t want to keep taking shots at this one person. But I’m sure you’re aware there is this particular person who has a tendency to do cosplay a lot. That's the kind of stuff I’m talking about. I didn’t need to know about that. Ever. (Laughing)

M- Is there anything mysterious about Toshiya-san

K- To be honest, not that I’ve seen. I can’t say we really talk much. Unlike with some members who you end up seeing something even if you don’t want to. (laughing) 

(Audience laughs)

K- He made the chorus very unique. Actually, I originally wanted everyone to sing the chorus. But when it came down to it everyone was like “Which one of us is gonna sing it?” I was like No, no, no that’s not what I meant at all. (laughing)

(Audience laughs)

K- Like at lives only one person sings and the fans have particular points where they sing to right? It made it like that which isn’t what I wanted at all. (Laughing)

M- Next lets hear a little about Die-san.

K- I’d say Die-kun is probably the one I speak to the most.

M- He has an image of being quite the drinker however he recently gave up drinking. Kyo-san are you much of a drinker? 

K- I wouldn’t exactly call myself a drinker but recently I’m really into smoking shisha. My favourite thing to do these days is to put on a film and have one glass of sweet alcohol whilst smoking shisha. 

M- You used to smoke cigarettes before, are you completely off those? 

K- Yeah I don’t smoke cigarettes anymore. The smell sticks to your clothes and leaves a horrible taste in your mouth. It’s a no go for me. 

M- Same for cigars and such?

K- Yeah. 

M- No more cigarettes or cigars and Die-san quit drinking. 

K- I hope everyone can be healthy. 

M- Die-san has certainly changed a lot compared to back then hasn’t he? Back in the days he had short hair that gave him this really manly image but he’s got this luscious, shiny hair. (laughing) 

K- It's very bewitching isn’t it. I think he’d suit purple clothes. 

(Audience laughs)

M- How about Kaoru-san? Recently it seems like his hair colours are enough to rival yours

K- This might be a bit odd to say, but I actually much preferred it when he had his black permed hair and wore no make up. Recently it’s…kinda too unlike him? Like he’s reliving his youth or something? (Laughing) 

(Audience Laughs)

K- I wonder if something happened to him? (Laughing)

M- He’s got an exhibition coming up soon, it seems like he’s very busy with various things too. 

K- Everyone please go check it out. I found out about the exhibition pretty much at the same time as the fans did. I was like “Wow I didn’t know he could draw like this” It was very refreshing in a good way. 

M- Right, if you think just because you’ve spent all this time talking about the 4 members you turn won’t come then you are very much mistaken. (Laughing)

K- Honestly, there’s really no need to talk about me. (awkward laugh) 

M- So, you’ve been overseas many times now. Do you feel as if it's changed the way you see things or affected you in some kind of way?

K- Not remotely. Even since the first time I went it’s been like this but, whenever it’s time to go all I can think is “I don’t want to go”

M- What is it that you dislike so much? 

K- The people are massive, the toilets don’t have seats, some of them don’t even have doors….

M- I suppose it would be difficult to get used to an environment like that. But saying you don’t want to go.. 

K- Everyone wants me to go. 

(Audience  laughs) 

M- Although recently the amount of overseas people coming to see Dir en grey has been increasing hasn’t it? 

M- Getting to London was a bit of a mission wasn’t it? Having to take the Bus across on the ferry, plus the amount of time traveling. I bet you couldn’t sleep at all? 

K- I mean, I spent the whole time inside the bus. Everyone else went outside. 

M- Didn’t interest you at all?

K- Nope. Plus it was cold.

(Audience laughs)

M- What did you eat for lunch today? 

K- Mcdonald’s.

M- Are you serious?! (Laughing)

K- Yeah, they got this new thing where there’s load of nuggets. I had that. 

M- By the way, what will you be having for dinner today? 

K- Ive ordered a pizza to be delivered to the green room. 

M- This all has a very American food vibe to it (laughing) 

M - I know you’re not really a reckless person but what’s the drive behind creating so many new projects one after another?

K- I suppose it’s a sense of not wanting to become luke warm. Back in the day it felt more as if we had to just keep putting stuff out indefinitely, even if at times we didn’t particularly want to. But looking back, I feel that because of that a lot of new stuff came into fruition. Maybe some people just want to seem like they’re this big influential figure but that’s not why I do it. That doesn’t apply to all the members though. Especially who we were on about earlier…(Shinya) 

(Audience laughs)

K- I think it’s better not to become as wishy-washy as he is. 

M- Is there any particular way of thinking you would say helps bandmen not to become so wishy-washy? 

K- I’d say just don’t reveal so much. Theres another side to all the members. Although, sometimes you end up seeing it even if you don’t want to. 

K- I don’t want to keep taking shots at this one person. But I’m sure you’re aware there is this particular person who has a tendency to do cosplay a lot. That's the kind of stuff I’m talking about. I didn’t need to know about that. Ever. (Laughing)

(Audience bursts into laugher)

M- Ok, well how about if someone said to you tomorrow you have to cosplay, What would you cosplay as? 

K- Melon bread.

M- Do you love it that much? (Laughing) 

K- I do. 

M- What does 2019 hold for DIR EN GREY? 

K- I want to release a triple CD album. But…I dunno..it’s probably not possible. 

M- I suppose it’s not really possible to release a collection of work like that right away is it? 

K- No it's not. You have to start from scratch. 

M- Although clearly the feeling and drive to put out 3 CDs worth of songs is there. (Laughing) I’m sure with that in mind something will come from it. 

K- You’re going to mention this to the other members aren’t you? Make sure you tell them what you just said to me when you do. 

(Audience laughs) 

M- If a 3 CD album is too difficult what about a 3 CD single? (Laughing) 

Well it appears that the end of our time today has unfortunately come. Everyone, did you enjoy yourself today?

(Big applause from the audience)

K- I'm happy to hear that.

Bad Habit | Part IV

FOUR

Harry and Viv stumbled into her flat at around seven that evening. Viv had never been on a date that lasted more than a couple hours, let alone the over seven she’d spent with Harry. They’d returned to her complex about an hour and half earlier, but then they’d decided to go to the pub just down the street for a couple drinks and maybe some chips. They were pretty full on snacks and popcorn from their time at the cinema, but they figured something absorbent was good if they were going to be drinking a bit. Viv had no intention of getting anywhere close to drunk, but she didn’t mind being a little bit tipsy.

Which was exactly what she aimed for as her and Harry sat at a tall table beside each other, laughing at embarrassing stories they were telling about each other from their time in school. Viv snorted out a laugh at some point and Harry teased her lightly about how cute it was, so she tossed a chip at his face, which he whined lightly about before tossing one back at her. They giggled some more and sipped on their drinks. Harry had been pleasantly surprised when she’d ordered a bottle of Heineken when asked by a server. She struck him as more of a mixed drink sort of girl, but she’d continued with the beer throughout the time they were there. She’d only had three bottles by the time they left, so she was just pleasantly buzzed but still had her wits about her.

Harry seemed to be in a similar state, slinging his arm around her waist as they walked back to her building in the briskness of the evening. Viv was only then beginning to regret her choice to wear a dress, but she knew she’d be back in her cosy flat soon, so she didn’t worry about it too much.

When they got to front entrance, Harry stopped and made to bid her farewell for the night. He figured this was the end of their time together for the day, and he’d have to call for a cab or an Uber to take him back to his, since he didn’t quite feel like walking back home in the cold. He supposed he could always call Niall, but he was sure his flatmate was already headed out for a party, seeing as it was a Friday night. He was almost certain that the Irishman would already be a few pints in and in no shape to be coming to pick up Harry and take him back to their home.

“Come inside?” Viv asked him, biting at her bottom lip a bit shyly. Harry was a bit surprised by her offer, but he wasn’t about to turn her down. He didn’t have any plans to do anything ungentlemanly with her, considering this was still only their first date, but he was more than willing to accept her hospitality and the warmth her flat would provide.

So, they went up to her flat, giggling a bit when Viv had to try twice before successfully getting the key into the lock. Viv kicked off her boots as soon as she closed the door behind her, so Harry did the same, wiggling his socked toes as he steadied Viv as sh struggled with her second boot. When she finally got it off, she sighed and smiled up at him.

“Would yeh like anything to drink?” she asked. “Can make some tea, if yeh’d like.”  

“That would be great, thanks,” Harry agreed.

Viv nodded as she shrugged out of her coat, gesturing for him to do the same. “Make yourself at home. I’m gonna put the kettle on.”

Harry wandered into Viv’s living room as she went to put the kettle on. He had intentions to just make a spot for himself on the couch until she came back, but he noticed she had bookshelves in the living room that were filled to the brim with books, CDs, records, music sheets, photographs, cards that looked like they were from a recent birthday, and a bunch of little knickknacks that looked like they were from different parts of the world.

He set his eyes on a photograph that was in a shiny silver frame. It was of what he assumed was Viv’s family at a wedding. It was one of the married couple and some family and the wedding party. The bride and the groom in the center were beaming happily, each tucked into the other’s side. Viv was stood immediately to the bride’s right, dressed in a pretty lavender gown that brushed around her ankles, showing off her silver heels and what looked to be a tattoo on her left foot, holding her own small bouquet of flowers. By her side was an older woman in a light grey gown that reached the floor, a black shawl around her shoulders, her blond hair cut in a stylish bob. Stood behind the both of them was a gentleman that looked to be the same age as the woman, smiling proudly in a nice suit, his wavy hair the same chestnut colour as Viv’s. Harry supposed these were Viv’s parents.

On the other side of the groom was a boy that looked to be slightly younger than Vivian wearing a tux that was the same grey as the groom’s, his hair blond like the older woman’s. He was tall, too, like the older man, his grin the same. Stood beside him was a much younger boy, probably with or nine, beaming a slightly toothless smile and the same chestnut as Viv, wearing a miniature version of the grey tux. They all looked quite smart, and it looked to be early autumn, as the photo was taken outside and the leaves of the trees were all bright red and orange. Everyone looked incredibly happy.

��That’s from my brother’s wedding last year,” Viv said to him, suddenly appearing beside him. She slid herself close and pointed out everyone in the photo as she told him their names. “That’s my older brother, Oliver.” She pointed to the groom. “Those are my two younger brothers, Jamie and Carter. And those are my parents.” She pointed to the two older people in the frame, confirming Harry’s suspicions. “Oliver’s wife is called Lily.”

“You were a bridesmaid?” Harry guessed by the colour of her dress matching the guys’ ties and the ribbon tied around the bride’s bouquet.

“Maid of Honour. Lily’s been my best mate since we were in Year 3.”

Harry turned to look at her with wide eyes. “Your older brother married your best friend since yeh were little?”

Viv laughed at his surprise. She bit her lip to quell her giggles. “Yeah. Oliver’s only two years older than us. I always reckoned they fancied each other when we were younger. They didn’t start actually dating until we were in our last year of secondary and Oliver was in sixth form. My parents thought it was kinda odd, since they saw Lily as a sort of sister to Oliver, since she was around to much when we were growin’ up, but I was elated. Oli proposed the New Year’s before.”

“They’re so young,” Harry observed, figuring Lily was only twenty, like Viv, making Oliver twenty-two. He didn’t know anyone personally that was married, yet. And their wedding was over a year previous, so they had to have been nineteen and twenty-one, Harry figured.

Viv shrugged. “They’re each other’s soul mate. They didn’t see any point in waiting until they were in their mid-twenties or summat.”

“Are they still in school?” Harry asked, still surprised two people could love each other so much that they’d get married so young. He couldn’t even fathom it, really.

“Oliver’s a teacher now,” Viv told him. “He teaches Year 3 at a private school. Lily’s still going to school. They live in Surrey.”

“So they’re not far.” Viv shook her head with a smile. “Do yeh see them often?” “Lily and I get together about once a month, when we can both find time. She’s studying biology, so she’s a bit more busy than I am. I see my brother occasionally. Mostly at holidays and birthdays.”

“And the rest of your family?” Harry asked.

The kettle started whistling then, so Viv gestured for him to follow her so she could continue answering his questions.

“My parents and younger siblings live in Reading. My parents are professors at the uni there.” Viv poured some water into mugs over bags of Earl Grey tea. “What do they do?”

“My mum’s a zoology professor. She mostly teaches about marine animals. She does research with her grad students about the migration and growth patterns of sea urchins.” Harry made an impressed sound in his throat and Viv smiled. She’d always been proud of all her mum’s research, even if it took up a lot of her time, especially when they were younger. “My dad is an archaeology professor. Ancient cultures and all that. Mostly ancient Greek and Roman civilisations.”

“And your younger brothers?” Harry asked as Viv handed him a mug, following her back into the living room to sit at the little love seat she had in there.

“Jamie is seventeen. He’s at the local college doing his A-levels. Wants to go to Germany for uni, though, for some reason. Not that I begrudge him wanting to get out of the area, but that’s pretty far.” Viv blew on her tea, pursing her lips in a way that had Harry biting his bottom lip, too distracted to even try to tend to his own mug. “Carter’s only just turned eleven, so he just started secondary this term. Thinks he’s finally catchin’ up to threats of us.” Viv laughed.

“Why the age gap?” There was six years between Carter and Jamie, which seemed large when there were only two and three years between the other siblings.

Viv snorted, which made Harry smile. He’d teased her about it earlier, but he actually found it quite adorable. “He was a bit of a surprise. Oliver was too, I suppose. My parents were only in their first year of grad school when Oli was born. Jamie and I were planned after that. They thought they were done, but Mum found out she was pregnant when Jamie was six. Bit of a shock for us all. We were still young, but we’d all accepted Jamie was the baby. Then Carter showed up and messed up the dynamics.”

“You’re still a middle child, though,” Harry pointed out with a raise of his brow. There were things to be said of middle children.

“But I’m the only girl,” she countered, obviously picking up what Harry was trying to say.

“Touche,” he nodded.

“What about you? What’s your family like, Harry?”

“It’s just four of us,” he shrugged. His family was much less exciting than Viv’s, he thought. “My mum, Anne, works from home doing charity stuff. She’s a coordinator of some sort. She’s always planning stuff and attending charity events.” It was Viv’s turn to make an impressed sound. Harry smiled. “My mum’s the best person I’ve ever known. Never met anyone kinder.”

“Explains where yeh get it from,” Viv mused.

“I’d like to think so,” Harry nodded, a small smile still tugging at his lips. “Then there’s Robin, my stepdad. He’s perfect for mum. Just as nice and always happy. Good enough a man to take on a woman with a bratty teenage daughter and a weird son.”

“You’ve got a sister?” Viv asked, somehow not at all surprised by this revelation. Harry seemed the type to learn all he knew about handling and interacting with women from years of carefully maneuvering a moody older sister.

“Yeah, Gemma. She’s three years older than me. Lives with her boyfriend in London, now. She’s working on gettin’ her business off the ground.”

“What’s she do?”

“She owns a boutique in Covent Garden. Does well for herself.” Harry smiled proudly, his relationship with his sister obviously much better than he was letting on.

“They sound lovely,” Viv nodded, smiling at Harry over the rim of her mug.

Harry set aside his own mug on her coffee table. He took to folding the sleeves of his shirt up his forearms, her flat much warmer than he anticipated. He was feeling a bit warm, though, that could have been her Viv’s presence. She made his heart race in a way that he hadn’t experienced in a while. It was overwhelming and completely welcome all the same.

“They are. My parents live in Cheshire, though, so I don’t see them save for holidays, now. Gem and I’ll have lunch every so of—”

Viv suddenly started choking on her tea, sputtering with her eyes wide. She lunged to reach for a napkin she’d brought in with her that was laying on the coffee table. She dabbed at her mouth to clean up the splattered tea, coughing to clear her lungs of the inhaled liquid. Harry fretted over her, rubbing her back. “Yeh alright?” he asked, his concern genuine in his tone and the crumple of his features. Viv would find it amazing if she wasn’t currently freaking out.

Her eyes had zeroed in on his arms as he’d rolled his sleeves up. Mostly the movement had caught her attention, but then she’d stayed transfixed because she was finally going to get to see his exposed forearms, which she had been wanting after brief glances at his hands. She’d seen through jumpers and jackets the pull of his broad shoulders, so she was exceedingly curious about what the rest of his body looked like. “Yeh sure?” he asked, a bit skeptical, though, still concerned about her wellbeing. “Yeh seem a bit flustered.”

Why, yes, Harry. Now that you mention it, I am quite flustered. I am flustered because I just realised you’re the boy that I watch jerk himself off to the internet nearly every Tuesday and Thursday.

Instead, she went with, “I, uh—” She coughed again to try to think of what she was going to say. Viv took a deep breath and decided to really just go for it. No beating around the bush, no stalling, no bullshitting. Just complete honesty and a hope for the best outcome. She wasn’t sure what she thought that was, though.

“I just realised you’re the man I’ve been watching masturbate on the internet twice a week for the last few months.”

It was Harry’s turn to choke, except it was only his own saliva, so the spluttering was minimal and he coughed a few times to clear it. “Yeh’ve what?” he mumbled.

“Yeah, not my most appropriate confession,” Viv admitted, forcing a chuckle to try to make this all less awkward. She was pretty sure it wasn’t working. “Figured it was best to just get it out there, though, seein’ as I’ve just figured it out.”

Harry stared at her with wide eyes for a few silent beats before squeezing his eyes shut and taking a few deep breaths. She wasn’t sure if he was trying to figure out how to have this conversation or devising a way to rid himself of her and get out of her flat as quickly as possible, but she allowed him his time either way. She knew this was a bit of a shock to him, too, and she didn’t want to push him. She was shocked, too, but at least she wasn’t the one who the other’d seen naked multiple times. She supposed she did have a slight advantage here.

With eyes still closed, but now just resting instead of squeezed, he began to breathe out, “So, you’re tellin’ me…th-that you’re subscribed to me. And yeh’ve seen me—seen me masturbate.” He cleared his throat and peeked his eyes open, looking at her like he was a cornered animal for some reason. He scooted toward her on the couch almost timidly, but there was also a sort of resolve in his eyes that made them sparkle. He reached a hand out to place on her bright red cheek, letting the tips of his fingers sift through her hair. Her breath stuttered in her throat, and Harry watched as she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, chewing at it lightly. He nearly groaned as he saw the tip of her pink tongue dart out to lick over it and guide it in. After everything she’d just word vomited, he still found her much too attractive for his own good.

“Viv?” he asked, his voice quiet after the loud, prolonged rambling of Viv’s voice.

Vivian gulped before responding. “Yeah?”

“Just…be quiet for a second, yeah?.

The look in his eyes was a it intense, so Viv squeaked out, “Okay.”

2017 End-of-the-Year Q&A Extravaganza Blog! #1

It’s time for our first 2017 End-of-the-Year Q&A Extravaganza! We’ve got a bunch of these we’ll be posting over the holiday break, so please look forward to them. Now, let’s roll right in!

Question: Has selling your games on PC worked out for you so far? I know supporting the PC platform is a relatively recent choice for XSEED. - @Nate_Nyo

Ken: Being on PC has been great for us as it allows us to reach anyone anywhere in the world regardless of region or console. We were probably one of the earlier adopters in terms of bringing content from Japan to PC as we first published Ys: The Oath in Felghana on Steam almost 6 years ago in early 2012.

Brittany: I love working on PC. The work involved is greater than working on console, but I feel like it's a bigger learning experience, too. For console, the developers normally handle the graphics after we translate them, and they do all the programming and such. For PC, everything falls on us. I wasn't that experienced with Photoshop in the beginning, but I think I've gotten a lot better with it over the years. We can also receive updates instantly, and since I talk with our PC programmer through Skype, it's easier to suss out our exact needs and think of ideas to improve the game or bring it to modern standards.

Question: What non-XSEED games do you praise the localization for? - @KlausRealta

Brittany: Final Fantasy XII. I love everything about Final Fantasy XII's writing. I'm also a big fan of the personality in the Ace Attorney localizations. I'm still playing Yakuza 0, but you can feel the passion of the localization team in the writing. There are some projects where you can tell the editing was phoned in, and then there are games where it's obvious it was a labor of love. All of these games have a color I aspire to.

Tom: Probably going to be a popular answer, and not an especially surprising one, but I've got to give props to Lost Odyssey. It's hard to deny the timeless quality and absolutely masterful English writing that went into basically every line of that game's massive script, with the many short stories being of particular note. That game really does represent an inspirational high bar that I think most everyone else in the industry will forever strive to reach in their own works.

For a more unexpected answer, I've also got to give mad props to Sega for their work on Monster World IV. As a Sega Genesis game released digitally in English for the very first time less than a decade ago, I guess I was kind of expecting a fairly basic "throwaway" translation -- but instead, the game boasts a full-on professional grade localization that's easily up to all modern standards, brimming with charm and personality. It's really nice to see a legitimate retro game being given that kind of care and attention in the modern era, and it makes it very easy for me to recommend (as does the fact that the game is actually quite fun, and is sure to be enjoyed by anyone who's played through all the Shantae titles and really wants to try something else along similar lines).

John: I played Okami on PS3 earlier this year (before the remake was announced), and I was awed by how skillfully the team handled text that is chock full of localization challenges like quirky nicknames, references to Japanese fairy tales, and regional dialects. I was especially amused to see a reference to "kibi dango," the dumplings Momotaro uses to bribe his companions in that famous story. We dealt with the same cultural reference with STORY OF SEASONS: Trio of Towns.

Nick: My go-to response is always Vagrant Story, because it’s the game I credit with getting me really interested in a career in localization. Before that point, I had enjoyed games for their story and characters, but hadn’t realized just how much the specific word choices and tone contributed to a reader’s perception of a story as a whole. The gents behind VS’s localization would go on to be industry luminaries, with Rich Amtower now calling shots in Nintendo’s Treehouse department and Alex Smith being synonymous with the highly regarded prose of Yasumi Matsuno’s games – including the cool and underappreciated Crimson Shroud for 3DS, and Final Fantasy XII, which as anyone who’s played it can tell you is a stellar localization. Having spent a lot of time with FFXII’s “The Zodiac Age” remaster this year, the care and attention to detail put into the localization still blows me away. The unique speech style of the Bhujerbans (with...Sri Lankan inflections, if memory serves correctly) sticks with me, because I knew that I myself would never have been able to pull off something like that so deftly. I guess you could say Vagrant Story started a lineage of games that’s always given me something to aspire to as an editor.

Final Fantasy XIV, which I’ve been playing this year, also has a very good localization, especially considering the reams of text that go into an MMO of its size and scope. Michael-Christopher Koji Fox and his team have done a bang-up job giving life and personality to the land of Eorzea, and I’ve enjoyed seeing how the localization has changed in subtle ways as time has gone on. The initial “A Realm Reborn” localization sort of cranks the “regional flavor” up to 11 with heavy dialects and vernacular, but in subsequent expansions, they kind of eased up on that and have found a good mix between grounded localization and the kind of flourishes that work well in high-fantasy settings.

 And, while I haven’t played it in a number of years, I remember Dragon Quest VIII having a really great localization, too, with ol’ Yangus still living large in my memories. Tales of the Abyss was fantastic as well, and both DQVIII and Abyss delivered some really brilliant dub work that showed me how much richer one could make characterization when the writing and the acting really harmonized. I still consider Tales of the Abyss my general favorite game dub to date. The casting is perfect, with not a bad role among them. I also want to give mad props to Ni no Kuni’s Mr. Drippy, just as a perfect storm of great localization decisions. Tidy, mun!

Question: How hard is it to turn in game signs and words to English for Japanese? Is it as simple as going in and editing text? Or as hard as creating a whole new texture for the model? - @KesanovaSSB4

Tom: We refer to this as "graphic text" -- meaning, literally, text contained within graphic images. How it's handled differs from project to project, but the short answer is, yeah, it involves creating a whole new texture for the model. Sometimes, this is handled by the developer: they'll just send us a list of all the graphic text images that exist in-game and what each image says, we'll send that list back to them with translations, and they'll use those translations to create new graphic images on our behalf. For other games, however (particularly PC titles we're more or less spearheading), we'll have to do the graphic edits ourselves. When the original PSDs or what-not exist for the sign images, this is generally pretty easy -- but as you might expect, those aren't always available to us, meaning we'll sometimes have to go to a bit more trouble to get this done.

John: The best practice is to review graphic text very early in the localization process because it takes effort to fix and can throw a wrench in schedules if issues are discovered too late. On occasion, it is too difficult to change ubiquitous textures, especially those that might also appear in animation. This was the case with "NewTube" in SENRAN KAGURA Peach Beach Splash, which the localization team wanted to change to "NyuuTube" to make the wordplay clearer to series fans.

Question: With the Steam marketplace becoming increasingly saturated and being seen as a greater risk to publish on in recent times, what does XSEED plan on doing in order to remain prominent and relevant in the PC gaming space? - @myumute

Ken: It is indeed getting harder and harder to stand out as hundreds of new titles are releasing on Steam each month. We are working our way towards simultaneous release across all platforms to help leverage some of the coverage from the console version to get more attention to the PC release, so hopefully that's something we can accomplish soon. For PC-exclusive releases it continues to be a challenge, but at least they have a long tail and even if it's not an immediate success at launch we know it can continue to produce sales for years to come.

Question: What was your favorite film that you saw in 2017, and why? - @Crippeh

John: I'm way behind on movies this year (haven't seen Disaster Artist, Phantom Thread, or Get Out, for example), but recently I've enjoyed both Star Wars and Lady Bird. I expect I'll watch my favorite film from 2017 sometime in 2018.

Ken: Wind River. Mainly because of Jeremy Renner's performance and how many quotable lines he had.

Liz: Get Out for horror mindblowing amazingness, Spider-Man Homecoming for genuinely fun comic book movie, and The Shape of Water for Guillermo del Toro. Guillermo del Toro should always be a category.

How Christopher Plummer Became One of the Best Villains in Star Trek Movie History

Christopher Plummer appeared in over 200 films during a storied career spanning seven decades. Though he first found fame as Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music, that ultimately provided a springboard to an eclectic career that surprised and delighted in equal measure. Plummer was an accomplished theatre performer with an uncanny knack for stealing the show in minor yet memorable roles; a magnetic presence you simply couldn’t take your eyes off. 

Everyone has a favourite Plummer performance whether it be as Rudyard Kipling in John Huston’s The Man Who Would Be King or his recent turn in Rian Johnson’s inventive murder mystery Knives Out. Yet for Star Trek fans, the late, great Oscar winner will always be remembered as General Chang from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, an iconic villain and one arguably responsible for rescuing the entire franchise. 

Bringing Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country to the Screen

After the critical and commercial disappointment of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the Enterprise was on red alert, with cast and crew aware another misstep could spell the end for their big screen adventures. A prequel, tentatively titled “Star Trek: The Academy Years”, was discussed yet ultimately jettisoned following objections from fans, core cast members, and Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry himself. Discussions were also held over a potential crossover that would see Captain Kirk meet Jean-Luc Picard though that idea was also shelved to return to at a later date. 

Ultimately, it was Leonard Nimoy and writer and director Nicholas Meyer who hit upon the idea of using the film as an allegory for the fall of communism with the Klingons cast firmly in the role of Soviet Russia. The film would begin with a Chernobyl-like intergalactic event on the Klingon home planet and their attempts to broker a peace deal with the Federation.  It was Meyer who hit upon the idea for a plot that would see Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy framed for the assassination of the Klingon High Chancellor. 

Casting Christopher Plummer as Chang

Widely credited with resurrecting the fortunes of the franchise as director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and co-writer on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Meyer only ever had one man in mind for the role of the erudite Klingon general with the penchant for quoting William Shakespeare. 

“I had always been a fanatic Christopher Plummer fan,” Meyer told StarTrek.com. “I had acquired a CD of him performing excerpts from Henry V to the accompaniment of the musical score that William Walton wrote for the Olivier movie of Henry V. I used to just listen to it over and over and over again. And Chang came out of that recording.” 

An avid Shakespeare fan, Meyer had seen Plummer in several productions through the years. It was an experience that shaped much of what went into the script for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – right down to the film’s subtitle which is a direct quote from Hamlet. 

Meyer began writing his script with the idea of Plummer as Chang – and he was not about to accept any alternatives. 

“I said to Mary Jo Slater, who was our casting director, ‘You have to get him [Plummer] for this, because I can’t make the movie otherwise. There’s no other actor who can do this.’” 

Even so, Plummer took some convincing according to Leonard Nimoy. 

“I had to get on the phone with him several times… he had turned us down,” Nimoy revealed in an interview included on the Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Blu-ray release;  

“He was certainly a great choice… but we were turned down. There’s a certain kind of very good actor who’s concerned about taking on this makeup and this persona of a bad guy in a Star Trek movie…He wanted to find some way to say ‘OK, I think I can take this on,’ and make it worthwhile.” 

Despite being a fan of the original TV series, Plummer was hesitant to take the role of a Klingon on account of the heavy make-up effects he would be required to wear. 

“I didn’t want to look like every other Klingon,” Plummer later explained to William Shatner in the 2011 documentary The Captains. “We ran into great difficulty because … they said it was traditional to have all of this [the usual Klingon headpiece].” 

Plummer elaborated further in another interview for the film’s DVD release: “I found a lot of the headgear that some of them wore rather phoney. I could see where the stitches were, so I decided I’d be a little different” 

Eventually a compromise was reached. 

“Finally, Nicholas [Meyer], who wrote that very witty, tongue in cheek script, he stood up for me,” Plummer explained in The Captains. “The director stood up for me and I got my way — I didn’t have the long hair.” 

Donning an eyepatch that hinted at his eventful past as a great Klingon warrior, Plummer threw himself into the role of Chang with gusto, seeing it as a chance for the “upright, glamorous leading man to play a villain.” 

It was much more than that though. 

The Shakespeare Influences

Shatner and Plummer had a friendly rivalry that dated all the way back to the 1950s, when Shatner was Plummer’s understudy during a production of Henry V at Stratford Shakespeare Festival. 

When illness prevented Plummer from appearing one night, Shatner took his place and found a way to upstage him. 

“He didn’t do what I did at all,” Plummer recalled during an interview on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. “Where I stood up to make a speech, he sat down. He did the opposite of everything I did. And I knew that son of a bitch was going to be a star.” 

The role of Chang offered a rare opportunity to share the screen with his friend and rival and it was one that Plummer relished, imbuing his performance with a sense of theatricality largely lacking in the Star Trek universe up until that point. It wasn’t a case of Plummer trying to upstage Shatner either; his grandiose performance elevated that of his co-star, bringing an extra dimension to the role of Kirk and his prejudice against the Klingon race. 

The film’s clever use of Shakespeare quotes – designed to highlight humanity’s gravitation towards conflict – might also have fallen flat were it not for Plummer’s delivery and ability to make them a believable part of his devious warmongering character’s persona. 

It’s not all about the famous bard though – one of Plummer’s most memorable scenes comes during Kirk and McCoy’s trial on the Klingon home planet of Qo’noS. Plummer delivers a devastating disdainful cross-examination of Kirk that ends with the memorable line: “Don’t wait for the translation, answer me now!” It’s an exchange that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the kind of courtroom dramas commonplace in the 1990s, with Plummer at his grandstanding, dramatic best. 

Even Chang’s final words in the film of “to be, or not to be” – the kind of line that might have sounded cliched coming from anyone else – were imbued with a sense of fatalistic gravitas that only enhanced Plummer’s performance and the character in Star Trek folklore. 

It also served to underline the importance of Plummer’s performance. While the concept developed by Meyer and Nimoy helped enliven the flagging franchise, Plummer undoubtedly elevated the material.  He delivered the franchise’s most compelling villain since Khan Noonien Singh. 

Audiences and critics evidently agreed, with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country garnering positive reviews and improved box office returns to help return the Enterprise to its former glories. It’s a further testament to Plummer’s performance that Chang lived on beyond the film in several Star Trek comic books and the game Star Trek: Klingon Academy – a game he happily reprised the role for. 

Plummer later reflected on the experience in his own inimitable fashion during his interview for The Captains.  

“I had the most marvelous time,” he said. “I was only jealous of David Warner (Chancellor Gorkon), who had the best line in the whole show, and I wished to hell General Chang could have said it, but it was David who said it.”

Hello Sirs, I have gone through about half of the lessons. Yes I plan on starting my own business very soon as I am about to crack at my regular job as a waiter. The lessons are quite good. 2. have you ever been able to get over any fears?

yeah. i’ve worked through a lot of fears that were as a result of anxiety in the past couple years. i managed to break off friendships that were detrimental to me; always something i was scared of. i came out. i was scared of that. also i kinda got over my fear of getting injections? (blood getting taken tho - no way.)

3. do you prefer seeing a movie in theaters or watching at home?

mmmm... theaters.

i don’t like a lot about my hometown, but i guess i like that its surrounded by fields and nature. i love where i live the rest of the time because my city has so much going on. especially in the music scene. idk i just love my city

A Sunday 7 kinda Sunday,

So its been a while since ive actually posted stuff here. Ive been lurking, but it's been for a reason. A lot is going on.... - Too many people dying. Yeah, you heard that right. First it was a high school friends baby, who we were all rooting for to have a child, who died of SIDS. As someone who is childless , I hurt for them. Then it was the man who helped shape my personal spiritual journey as a kid growing up, our parish priest. Now before I hear the guffaws about religion, he was pretty big on being mostly socially progressive. But what he gave to all of us was the idea and the feeling of spiritual awakening, teaching about why we did things the way we did them and truly blending the mysticism of traditions with a search and openness for the spirit. I always thought this was an incredible thing, because as I get older and see God in things like whales, the laughter of friends, the look of love on the faces of an older couple, I think he really got that right because I'm still curious and im still open to not just my own interpretation of the divine, but others. And lastly, my fathers brother, my uncle Marty. Our relationship started the same day that I met my father. He had come along to make sure there was not anything bad in my intent with my dad. And I think the second that my dad and I hugged, Marty knew he was just along for a cup of coffee. He knew my mom pretty well, as like most people who go to small schools and know each others siblings, and oddly enough he was part of the pipeline of people who were secretly checking in on me growing up. He was a good and honest man, was an expert at dad jokes, a hard worker, and left everybody with a smile on their face. And while he had ALS, my last memories of him are of he and his wife having a sweet moment together in the kitchen. I will miss him greatly. -Both of my parents are going to require surgery this summer. My moms is pretty minor(lymph node removal, thanks to a spider bite LAST YEAR!). My dad however, his is a bit more drastic. His knees are destroyed from, much like me, having an invincibility complex. So Hes having both of them replaced this summer. Not a huge deal, but he has Parkinson's, and both of my other brothers are elsewhere in the US. Sooooooo.......yeah. Not to mention He's having his heart stopped and restarted on the 23rd(rhythm issues), so im kinda worried about that. -im doing my best to find a quick season of work so that I can take a good part of the summer off, but its been a challenge so far. Im probably going to gave to head to AK as early as Friday, but not doing what I had in mind. I need to have this time for my parents, but I also need to pay bills and move AND......go do my maritime stuff. Which means - trying to set up a meeting with a local tug boat owner who is looking for people to get into the rotation. His company is experiencing severe burn out. They work in the long beach, ca harbour, offer full benes, its union, and it would be a great job to get me out of Alaska for the most part and get me onto tugs.if I can get them to hire me right away and help me get my merchant mariners credentials, that would be pretty awesome.Then I can have a real life again, including music... -Music is just a blur for me. Ive been playing lots of little local gigs since ive been back, and applying for many northwest festivals. I have 2 so far, and we are putting on a third in Aberdeen, "songwriters gone coastal". There are 4 groups playing, including one of the recent contestants on "the voice"(who is super cool, btw), and im trying to throw together a thing at the end where we all have a sing a long(may sound hoaky, but we are all becoming a family. Plus, a rousing version of "pastures of plenty", which was written in Washington state by Woody Guthrie, is appropriate) im not tooting my horn when I say this(and please don't take this as being conceded), but there's some serious talent taking the stage that night. Im really excited because we are all doing a CD this summer, and its like a 400 seat show, and im going to do my best to sell it out. The new songs on mine are solid, the other folks are amazing, and its going to be broadcast on Facebook(hint hint). -But no matter what, im learning that Facebook, no matter how good a tool it is for marketing myself, is just a pit. I had a guy the other night send me a message about my mom, more or less saying she needed to not be so crass in he opinions and be quiet. I didn't know this guy from Adam, so I asked a few questions, and he said he didn't know whether I was her husband or that i might be her brother. I LET HIM FUCKING HAVE IT Im going to post this one of these days, not because I want a pat on the back but because this guy really thought it was ok to shame a woman by talking to a male relative and getting her to "understand" . I told him in explicit terms that he was no better than the Taliban, and that his puny words would have no effect on a true feminist like my mom. The stumbling on his retort was typical of a complete copy and paste politibot. You might enjoy the rant, it was kinda funny.... -anyhow, enough of my ranting. I just want to say thanks for reading this, and I seriously hope you are all doing ok. I know, I kinda go nuts on the hearts thing but y'all have great content. Seriously! Keep it up!!!! be kind to yourselves and to those you love, and I hope this finds you all ok, if not well.
