What if after the Reichenbach Falls in their grief and mourning John and Mariana kind of get together?

There's no company anymore not when Sherlock's absence has left such a vast hole, not when John can't even log onto Spotify without crying looking at all the cases they went on and not when Mariana can barely pick up client's phone calls without feeling sick.

So there's no inappropriate workplace romance happening cause there isn't even a workplace anymore.

Mariana and John don't talk about Sherlock much, it's too painful and they certainly won't speak about their own personal feelings about him either, why would it matter anyways? He's dead.

They don't talk about it. They don't talk about how they still buy and stock up on Sherlock's pasta sauce when they go grocery shopping. They don't talk about Sherlock's room, about it being empty, about cleaning it out, about the fact that the man that occupied it would never come back. They don't talk about his last chemical experiment and equipment still on the kitchen table, untouched and unfinished. They don't talk about it. They just don't. Not even months after he's gone and won't. Ever.

Then the impossible happens, Sherlock comes back from death just casually strolling in to surprise them both. And afterwards Mariana has to help John after he fainted and then Sherlock after John punches him.

And John and Mariana are so full of happiness and relief! The three share kisses and hugs. But...what now though? They go from struggling with his lack of presence, the new routine of just the two of them and mourning Sherlock's death to now having not only him back but their routine and business.

And with everything seemingly being back to what it felt like, the want of what once was comes crashing down - Mariana and John break up to go back to a time before Sherlock's death, even though Sherlock doesn't agree (he just finds out) and tells them that they can only go forward.

Cue the angst of Mariana and John's breakup, John's unresolved feelings for Sherlock that he now has a chance to resolve, Mariana's lingering feelings for John and new found ones for Sherlock, Sherlock confronting his own feelings of jealousy and confusion towards Mariana and John starting a relationship when he was gone (and without him? If he didn't 'die' would they have asked him into the relationship? What about now? He wanted them both but did both want him? What does want even mean?? Does he want a platonic or romantic relationship with them? What even is the difference? And etc etc etc).

And then they got together somehow and all retired on a bee farm where Mariana sells their honey at the local farmers market, Sherlock tends to the bees and John is just a house hubby.

okay well. one thing that i absolutely adore abt ieytd3 specifically is their dedication to The Bit. The Bit, in this instance, being the telekinesis.

i first heard of ieytd pretty much the year it came out- although i wavered in and out of the community until a few months before the sequel was announced. within that time, there was this trend in what few ieytd fics were published that they would reject the telekinesis mechanic entirely. they would pretend it didn't exist. they brushed it off as a mandatory game mechanic for a VR title, but obviously it doesn't actually matter in canon. it's unnecessary.

but seeing schell games literally go "nuh uh". and take what's a pretty significant step in a unique direction from their source material. and say "actually, not only is telekinesis canon, but we are going to make it's existence critical to the plot of our entire third installation" was so much fun. i respect them so much for that.

a lot of times i find the best sort of games are those that take their silliness seriously. they don't feel ashamed of doing their own thing- breaking the mold a little bit, if it means developing a deeper sense of identity. they took this mandatory mechanic- essentially the only obstacle between them and an untarnished james bond-esque experience- and said "we can roll with this". and just did.

i love a game that's not ashamed to be what it is.

Don't Shoot the Messenger: Posted vs Published

if you've read the version of 'Don't Shoot the Messenger' i posted last summer here and on AO3 for free, you might be wondering what the differences between that version and the version that was just published 9/30/2023 in ebook and paperback formats on Amazon are.

to clear that up, please see a summary of the differences below:

POV: the posted version was second person POV/reader insert; published version is third person POV

Editing: the posted version was edited by me, pretty soon after drafting; the published version has been professionally edited (and is a better story for it)

Content: the published version has a 5k bonus chapter that will not be released elsewhere (and contains smut ;) )

Print: the paperback version is obviously a version you can physically hold instead of it just existing on the internet lol

Another reason for picking up a copy is that all proceeds are being reinvested in publishing my much longer work "Nothing's Wrong with Dale" and i appreciate every penny i can get so i can publish that book and get it out to y'all sooner (you can also visit my kofi to give a more direct donation if u'd like)

I've tried to keep prices low as well with the ebook being 2.99 and the paperback being 6.99 (and free on kindle unlimited).

Eddie starts to sing a Spanish lullaby Buck vaguely recognizes and he drifts into sleep before the song ends. Eddie falls asleep soon after with a smile resting on his face. They end up both dreaming of how it'd be like to be together as if they don't already act like they're dating.
