Sudden Soulmates (Idia)

When you touch your soulmate for the first time, the memories of the past life you two first fell in love return.

Idia has never bothered with his soulmark, or the lack thereof. In fact, part of him feels rather pleased that at least that aspect of his life wasn't decided by outside forces.

Does that mean he'll probably die as a forever alone icky otaku? Yeah. But at least it'll be his choice.

For someone with such low self-esteem, Idia can be rather prideful. Being thrown around by a force he cannot fight directly, be it his family curse or Fate itself, will never sit well with him. The mere idea of bowing to them makes his skin crawl.

Idia just wants to do what he wants, like what he likes, like how he lives.

Not even Ortho's death could stop that.

So it's safe to say he is not happy when he comes out of his first shower in two days and there's suddenly a soulmark smack dab on his chest, right in the middle of his sternum.

The first scream is of terror. The second is of rage.

Poor Ortho has to use 100% of his processing power to both calm down Idia and make sure the room—maybe even the House dorm itself—doesn't melt at the mercy of fiery hair.

Idia absolutely hates his soulmate and he has not even met the person. He's frantically looking up information on soulmates, trying to understand how a soulmark can just appear so suddenly.

By all means, it makes no sense. Soulmarks do not appear, they're either there or not. Even if one soulmate is fated to be born after the other, the mark will still exist on the older one. A soulmark can only form in the transition from one life to another, in the brief moment between death and rebirth, as a result of a grand love lived.

If Idia really is meant to have a soulmate, the mark should've always been there from the moment his mother got pregnant.

But it wasn't.

But now it is.

And he doesn't want it.

He doesn't want to want it.

Yet. Yet he rubs his chest unconsciously when he's thinking. Yet he stares at it whenever he takes off his shirt. Yet he draws it whenever he has a pen on hand.

He figures the keys represent him, and the pomegranate... Seven, he cringes just thinking about it, but if the keys represent Hades—the keeper of the Keys of the Underworld—, then the pomegranate can only represent Persephone, Hade's loyal and beloved wife. Idia's fated one.

He dares not say it out loud, but Ortho cares not and blurts it out as soon as he sees the mark. The boy is over the moon with the knowledge that his older brother has a fated one. Idia spends a good amount of time telling Ortho that hacking into everyone's medical records to look for a soulmark description that matches his is not a good idea, even if Idia himself is extremely curious.

Will they start switching bodies suddenly? Will they remember the past life that started their love? Will they feel the mark burn when they're near? Will they dream of each other? Soulmarks that aren't names are in no way rare, but they also tend to make it hard to find each other, though the rise of social media has made it immensely easier.

Oh, well. It's not like his soulmate will want him. And he still bitter about the whole Fate thing.

Meeting them would be just terrible, really.

But still...

"Idia? You ok, buddy?"

Idia startles from his thoughts just in time to catch the coin he had mindlessly tried to push inside the vending machine through its glass before it can fall. Oh, Great Seven, why must this happen to him?

Why today? Why her? Why now? Why him?

"A–ah! He... Hello, Prefect..." Idia mumbles, trying to hide his humiliation. The tech guy trying to push the coin through the glass of the vending machine, how embarrassing is that? Kill him now.

"Hello. Everything ok? You're thinking so hard, your hair is burning your coat."

He yelps, hand going to the back of his neck, trying to feel if his coat is really burnt—it is. Not by much, but he can feel the burned texture. And if he concentrates a bit, he can smell it too.

"Kill me now."

"Don't be like that! It's understandable, really, I'm sure you're coming up with something cool in that incredible mind of yours!"

"N–not really..." He mumbles, turning back to the machine in hopes she won't see how embarrassed he feels by both her presence and her compliment. "Wanna something? M... M–my treat."

"Oh, no, you don't need to–"

"As... As a thanks for, uh, for hanging out with Ortho. He really likes you."

And he does, Ortho likes the Ramshackle Housewarden so much he has even mentioned wishing that she was Idia's soulmate, so he could have his two favorite people as siblings. Idia wasn't sure on how he felt about that back then, and he isn't sure about it now, so he just shoves the coin inside the hole and punches in the hot chocolate number.

"Did Ortho tell you I like that?"

"... Yeah..."

Thank the Seven the machine is quick. This weird half conversation might kill him.

Clumsily, Idia takes the beverage and holds it to her, praying his hair doesn't change colors when a million anime scenes like this flash in his mind.

Though it's not them that prevent him from hearing her thanks. It's how their hands touch for the first time ever as she takes the can from him, and how he is not Idia anymore.

He is Hades.

Surrounded by flowers and curious critters, frowning at their adorableness. Disgusting. He wants to burn them all, but then his companion laughs and his anger burns away, only ashes in this sea of love.

"Hades," the woman holding his hands smiles warmly, her hair the same color of wheat, her eyes the same hue as spring.

Had he been a mortal, he'd believe piously that she is the only divine to ever grace existence.

"Persephone," her other hand touches his chest, right the middle of it where his ribs meet, and he sighs her name again. "Persephone."

"You must return soon, my all. Our Kingdom cannot thrive without you," she warns, but the kiss to his cheek prays a different litany.

"I cannot thrive without you, my everything," he admits, for she'd know even if he lied.

"It is only temporary, love. I shall always return to you, for my place is by your side."

Hades takes her hand to his lips, kissing it with a gentleness he once believed himself incapable of. Her skin is warm, but not searing like his could get, just warm like gentle sunlight. Her skin tastes of life as he kisses up her arm, and her lips of promises of happiness.

He shall wait for her, for all eternity.

He is Idia again.

And he's kissing (Y/N), the magicless Prefect.

"Hrnk!" He quickly steps back, covering his face with his hands, trying to get his heart and his hair to calm down before he overheats.

"... Idia?" Perse–(Y/N) calls his name, and before he can process what he's feeling, he's back in her personal space, hugging her to his chest, almost purring when one of her hands rest on his chest, where his—their soulmark rests.

"You... I... You came back..."

"I did, yeah. Sorry for being late," she smiles warmly, like sunlight, gentle and shiny.

When he leans back down to kiss her again, he's not sure who exactly he is, other than the man who loves and is loved by her.

hiiro is fresh from his village baby boy left to go find his nii-san with only his clothes and a trusty satchel at his side- he just goes around looking for his nii-san and etcetc idk how long the gap is but he finds tatsumi and mayo and stays with them for some time and during that time tatsun gets him a coat because baby boy literally only has those and hes just been doing work for some guild (idk how to explain bc guilds require education but i guess tatsun pulled strings for him) so he has money to live while also looking for his nii-san and sometimes he has to go to cold places and one time he comes home after a job in a cold place and hes sick and tatsun is like hiiro-san please take this jacket with you :..) so now hiiro has a coat custom-made for him :3! he's good with elemental magic (the 5 core elements water wind fire earth plant) very versatile and a skilled little guy (not as talented as his nii-san but no one is as talented as nii-san!) anyways yadda yadda he gets a message or smth and is preparing to leave tatsun and mayo but (spoilers for meru fic) meru points him towards the town where everyone else is and yea he goes and finds his nii-san and now his goal has changed from find nii-san to convince nii-san to go back home but he befriends everyone else too and i think they do eventually go on some kind of adventure together maybe more the three younger ppl aira hiiro and kohaku

aira is a little silly fellow he dresses nicely (very inspired by fs2 but i cant stop looking at it and thinking damn he french colored......) and loves magic so much he admires all the grand mages and everyone in the upper echelons and loves watching other people cast spells and such unfortunately for him while he has a decently high innate talent, his control is God Awful which results in magic never going well for him- with no control at all, literally negative control, he can try to cast one spell and something completely different will be cast instead- and the skill level varies too it's literally just a roll of a dice for him if he tries to cast a simple flame spell he might end up flooding the room with a wall of water, it's that bad kkshfkj also he acts like he doesn't like it but he actually loves rabuhan-junior so much he secretly spoils the hamster named after him and rabuhan junior loves him back rabuhan-junior likes to sleep in his hat or on aira's head whenever kohaku goes out and leaves rabu-han junior with aira tatsun has very normal clothes bro dresses like a dad (did you know both of his fs have the same color palettes i didnt but using them as reference made me realize, anyways-) his clothes are very comfortable and easy to move around in, especially given his injury from [spoiler event here ]. he also has a cane and his injured leg has pain suppressor sigils and bandages wrapped all over it his leg isn't completely unusable like its not broken or anything its more like. a kind of necrosis like if you unwrapped it there would be a dark mark thats like icky and sometimes it flares up and hurts tatsun so much that he falls over and :( he found the cane one day in the catacomb (wonder who put it there) he added the begonia himself as a reminder of his sin... shiro is his little mouse familiar that he conjured with the help of kaname! she's a sweet little thing, often found sleeping on an open book on tatsumi's desk. she has the tatsumi-colored ears and legs because she was conjured up rather than a pact familiar. regarding magic tatsun is pretty average on both control and power, but that doesnt really matter because most of the spells he uses are passive spells more used for healing/doing work. he likes to garden and has a beautiful garden of all kinds of flowers at the chapel :) he just doesn't dare touch the flowers in the catacomb, because he knows someone else already takes care of those also that purple gem hanging around his neck is a gift from mayomayo it doesn't do anything and has no magic but tatsun still likes it :) mayomayo dresses in all dark colors because he believes that if he always dresses in dark colors no one will ever have to be bothered by seeing his existence he comes from a lineage that practices forbidden magic, not necessarily all dark but some of the more ... interesting spells . something happens in his past and he ends up leaving, taking with him his tome and well. proceeding to get chased by all kinds of monsters out in the wild because for some reason he just attracts all kinds of beasts poor guy magic-wise he does have the forbidden magic from his family but he more specializes in healing and curse removal- he doesn't dare do anything else for fear of (redacted). besides, maybe he'll one day be able to actually save somebody instead of hurting them, maybe his existence would be worth it some day. the ribbon in his hair (the green/teal one) is from tatsun :) he said mayo would look good in brighter colors and mayo disagreed so tatsun gave it to him and now its become part of his outfit and (i combust into a thousand bits ) also because of that mayo feels like he has to give tatsun something back so thats why he gives tatsumi a purple gem he had that used to hang from his spell tome anyways i still love this au very much and i hope you enjoyed now i will proceed to forget about it again /j i still really wanna write kohaku's fic and then maybe one last one for rinne-kun or smth because aghghj there's still so much that's not developed yet but (explodes)

This week in BL - I am all over the place, But Laws of Attraction is Phenomenal af

July 2023 Wk 2

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Laws of Attraction (Thai Sat iQIYI) 1 of 8 - Icky picked it up but it’s not airing for me until Sundays so I held this post specifically to watch and talk about this show. Stars the pair from To Sir With Love with the same production team. IT’S SO GOOD Y’ALL. A morally corrupted trickster lawyer with a tragic past, sad eyes, and a beautiful smile that he uses like a weapon. Meets paladin martial arts instructor from other side of the tracks (who is out, at least to his baby sister). Corrupt police. Spoiled rich kid evil. Ambitious politician. Tragic death. Terrible subs.* This show is very like Manner of Death but so far it is a much better/tighter story. It’s NOT BL but it is fucking phenomenal. And you shoudl watch it. Not wait to binge it. WATCH IT. On a global scale this might be the best thing currently airing featuring gay romantic leads. Its really fucking good. It’s Lawless Lawyer but more complex character motivation and gay af. Fuck yes please and thank you. FINALLY. Triggers for violence, beatings, death & torture depicted on screen. Like MoD they are not holding back.  (* A lot of the familial names they are using are not gendered in Thai but translated as such, like “nephew”. This one is gonna go down a lot easier if you know some Thai.)

Step By Step (Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 12fin - 2 years pass and no one’s hairstyle changes? Srs. Them meeting again = hella AWKWARD. Both still pining & hurt. NO SINGING. The reconciliation scene was great. I enjoyed that on the “do over relationship” they went with phi/pom (instead of the super formal khuns). So cute and so much more relaxed. Also lots of neck kisses! Charming final ep. It’s only flaw being they dropped the side couple, but I wasn’t really into them anyway. Ultimately? This is what Boss & Babe should have been and could we please have Up lead out another BL? I miss him and he only gets prettier. Full review below.

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 12fin - I adore the tiny little baby GL thread that we almost got. And I wish we had had more of it throughout the show. The side couple turned out to be good too. Emotional crying kisses are my favorite. Sunshine netted himself an earnest serious romantic boy, we likey. As for the main couple? Well... Tai’s search story arc was dull and dragging in a final ep and it felt bloated and slow as a result. It was a good confession reunion with Tai figuring all of his shit out, not surprising but fine. Kind of a a weak final ep. Full review below. 

Hidden Agenda (Thai Sun GMMTV YouTube) ep 1 of 12 - JoonDunk are back and we have all seen this a million times before, but Thailand never executed a successful formula it didn’t want to repeat a million times over, drunk bathroom and everything. Welcome (back) to Thai BL (and back and back and back). Basically they just added glasses, a new 1-shared-brain-cell friendship group, and different uni departments. Ah GMMTV, forever trying to recreate the magic of 2gether. But also I’m enjoying it. I’m a simple person. (Hi Jamie! Still in college since 2018 I see.) Anyone else notice that Chinese phrase that they did not translate for us? Mmm hum. Cute. Still... NO SINGING. 

Low Frequency (Sat iQIYI) ep 2 of 8 - Thames is in coma and getting slagged off on the socials. It’s moving a bit slowly but the premise is interesting despite the poor quality of the execution. 

Dinosaur Love (Sun iQIYI) ep 3 of 8 eps - Major trigger for self harm depicted on screen in part 2/4. I skipped it. Then there is assault and verbal abuse. I told you Ultimate Troop is NOT to be trusted. 

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 2 of 12 - Look, I don’t really mind this show but I also don’t like second hand embarrassment and I sense a metric butt ton incoming.

Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 8 of 12 - I was not best pleased with this episode. Ya’ll round the tumblr-sphere seem to be enjoying it but I have officially hit the wall on Kawi. There is not enough booze for me to cope with his shizz. I may be alone in this. But gotta say how I feel... Unlike him. Trash watch here.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Tokyo in April is... AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 5 of 8 - Poor Ren, he feels compelled to take on the burden of protecting everyone from sexual assault because he blames himself. And he can’t even talk to his boyfriend about it. Oh fuck me the pair of shoes at the door. And neck kisses? TOO MUCH. Argh. Japan. Why must you hurt so good? 

Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) 3 of 10 eps - It’s a very cute show. All the tropes and archetypes with no fuss or attempts to be clever, just executing them (sometimes over and over again). Even hiccoughs as a result of flirting! I haven’t seen that one in ages. The show feels old fashioned as a result. Nostalgic. I’m good with that. 

Tie The Not (Pinoy YouTube) ep 6 of 8 - Sad boys still sad now drunk. (Noooooo shoes on bed! Argh.) Finally kisses! Also good ones for a large portion of this ep. Plus hair pulling. And verse rep! And after sex convo. Then side dishes have a whole proper gay ax covo about top/bottom. Everyone say thank you Philippines! get down with your queer selves! 

Stupid Genius (Vietnam Fri YouTube) ep 6fin - I believe this was the final episode. It was cute. This is a standard sort of semi-crappy VBL high school drama. Enjoyable in its floppy friendliness, weirdly like a queer after school special promoting education. Dead fish kisses but fine for what it is. 7/10 

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) 2 of 12 eps - Activate cohabitation trope. They okay bfs. Minato not as frustrating this week, but still frustrating for me and Shin. Next week = cute outfits and dumb miscommunication yay!

Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) ep 11 of 12 - again it didn’t show up on my dash in time for this. I’ll pop it into next week.

House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.

Ended This Week

Step By Step Series Review  

This was Thailand’s answer to The New Employee, and everything I loved about that show I loved about this one. This was an office romance between stern boss and sweet subordinate that felt more authentic to an office environment than previous Thai BLs of this ilk. And that authenticity added tension to the narrative and character development (how novel). Now that might be because it has western source material, or it might be because it is actually kind of old-fashioned (it’s been years since I worked as an office grunt). I also really enjoyed the brothers’ relationship, and kinda wished they hadn’t attempted (and failed) to give said brother his own side BL. That one flaw made it a 9/10 for me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

La Pluie Series Review

This BL takes to task the fated mates trope and what it means to have love chained intimately to predestination. It’s about how faith in destiny before choice diminishes the authenticity of emotion, relationships, and connection. This is a high concept to examine through the lens of a BL. By activating + examining the soulmates trope this show is challenging a foundation of romance: the idea that there is one person meant to be your one romantic partner all your life. This means that we, as viewers, spend much of the show worried about it having a happy ending, and that’s the source of both its brilliance and tension: would the narrative have the strength to truly challenge its own romantic core? But, ultimately, all this elevated complexity was executed in a somewhat shaky manner with the narrative derailing into some serious pacing issues and characters manipulated by miscommunication. However, with good chemistry and decent acting all around, plus some excellent high heat and representation of consent and a few other rare tropes, this one has to (like it’s sibling show My Ride) earn a 9/10. I enjoyed it even as it made me think, so despite its flaws: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

tl;dr: can i please talk about canon events of consent violation as an entirely separate conversation from the fandom concept of a ship? i’m talking about what is, not what if.

okay but. people do understand. that rape is not necessarily about attraction or even about sex, right?

when i talk about the scenes i describe as sexual assault in trigun, i’m not saying that it means knives/vash is canon. i’m saying that there’s a deliberate construction to the narrative that makes knives’ violation of his siblings’ consent a driving force of the plot and what eventually screws him over.

i know this is a “yelling in the library and expecting not to be shushed” situation. you can’t take a piss in fandom without someone asking if you have a fetish.

but i really think we can stand to at least not keep putting square pegs in round holes, here.

yes, i know, you tag non-con with a slash too. but i’m not talking about shipping when i talk about knives violating the consent of vash and his sisters. those are two different modes of engaging with consent violation and relationships that involve it.

attraction and desire can be motives behind assault. but it’s not the only or even the most driving motivation. assault — violation of consent — is about power. having and exercising power over another. regardless of that’s to satisfy a personal desire or to force them to comply or just to hurt them.

(this is the same reason that using “pedophilia” as the catch-all it’s currently used as is rather than its actual definition is Fucking Stupid, but i digress)

when i discuss the metaphysical acts i refer to as analogous to rape, i am not saying that knives’ actions and his treatment of vash are driven by attraction (exclusively — that’s a conversation for another post) or that he fuses with his sisters to have an incestuous genocide orgy.

i’m saying that it’s extremely telling how knives treats his siblings, the acts of domination over them and the violation of their consent, their bodily autonomy, and their willpower, when his stated goal is to prevent humans from doing the same.

knives believes in power. that’s the only thing he believes in. and fundamentally, that’s why his attempts to “help” the dependent plants results in far more harm than good, and ultimately in failure.

he doesn’t understand freedom. he understands power. so for plants to be safe, in his eyes, there can be no humans that could hold power over them — the only one with the right to overpower them is him.

in vash’s case, the line blurs — vash is almost a whole, real person to him. he wants his cooperation, wants his company, he does desire him, in one way or another. but if vash won’t listen to him, won’t comply, won’t cede, won’t indulge in power for power’s sake [july incident, trimax] there’s no choice but to overpower him. consume him.

Since Kenjaku has lived for 1000+ years, do you think they have any other children besides the DPW and Yuuji? 1000 years is a long time to live and experiment, but at the same time it seems like child rearing is something Kenny only did for the sake of their plans... what do you think? :b

Looking at their domain expansion, yeah I think so. Kenjaku is absolutely obsessed with pregnancy and birth and how it relates to jujutsu and cursed energy, so I think they'd do it at least once to try it out, likely more oftern. I highly doubt Kaori was their first vessel with a womb. Being so heavily interested in that subject for a long enough period that it influenced their domain, I don't think that's something they only started dabbling in 150 years ago. Seems only natural to try it out on themselves as well. Plus, contraception wasn't as good in the past. Accidents happen.

Kenjaku wants change, the progress of humanity and taking cursed energy to its extreme. They said in Shibuya that they have tried to birth that themselves, but the results never managed to exceed their own potential and I don't think that only refers to the Death Paintings because Kenjaku seems mostly over that failure, but is unusually melancholic here. It's very different to how they talk to and about Choso in the movie theatre. There must have been something else in the past that affected them more personally. This just doesn't seem like an obsession they only got into a century ago. Especially because they talk about birthing that change themselves I think that is how they started out. Use their vessel and someone else's sperm or a modified womb to birth a child that could surpass them and their expectations. The merger curse is essentially that as well, just pushed to the extreme. They do currently carry Tengen inside them.

Kenjaku added their own blood to the Death Paintings when they didn't have to. I'm sure they could've pressured Noritoshi Sr. to do the same thing without needing to possess him. Clearly they like to be somewhat related to the children they create. A theory or hc I have is that Kenjaku started pretty simple by having a child with a strong sorcerer for example and when the results never lived up to, much less surpassed, their expectations, they took more and more drastic measures. After many failures they thought that their personal involvement might have a negative impact on the outcome and chose to take a step back aka the Death Painting experiment. Part of it was likely also that despite their fascination for them in theory, Kenjaku looks down on curses and might find the prospect of having a child with one a bit icky. Otherwise Kenjaku could've just possessed the DP mother. The involvement of curses like that would also likely lead to extreme outcomes and require many tries and performing an abortion on somebody else is much easier than doing it on yourself. After 9 failures Kenjaku realized that this approach wasn't working either, so they scraped together all their knowledge and experience from the past millennia, gave it one more try and created Yuuji.

Additionally, I don't think Yuuji, someone intended to be Sukuna's cage and then evolve from there, was just a stroke of luck. You have to plan that and do test runs. If Yuuji can't reliably suppress large amounts of Sukuna's cursed energy, their whole carefully prepared plan would blow up in their face. So they improve and improve until they can produce the kind of vessel they want by the time Sukuna is supposed to be incarnated. The Death Paintings are something completely different, they aren't relevant here, so it would make sense if Kenjaku tried to create - or more likely birth - a proto-Yuuji in the past. That one wasn't quite it though, so they kept going until everything came together and they had Kaori and Jin to finish it off.

I wouldn't put it past Kenjaku to have had a genuine wish for a child at some point when they were very young (like less than 100 years old). No grandiose plans, the idea of raising a new generation just appealed to them. But that plan got corrupted eventually the more they got obsessed with Tengen, her body and pushing cursed energy/humanity to new limits for the sake of satisfying their bottomless curiosity. It's kind of similar to their problem with friendship, I think.

Kenjaku has a pretty normal understanding of friendship when we come down to it, no crazy obsession with power levels or whatever. As we see with their recent actions, particularly around Takaba, they also seem quite lonely and are looking for friends they can share their passions with (now as well as in the past). Tengen is gone or more like one of their fundamentals for friendship - an equal relationship - isn't there anymore, so they need someone else to fill that void and dissatisfaction.

I'm pretty sure Kenjaku was always looking for friends they can be a nerd with, ever since they were young, but eventually the whole thousand year vendetta became more important. Maybe after Tengen's merger, when they were denied to find out what her evolution would lead to. A messy breakup will do that to you. Their curiosity became more important than friendships or a regular wish for children, and they got into the habit of using the people around them or even their family as tools and sacrificing them for the sake of their grander ambition. That might also be how they lost their capability to feel regret. They clearly aren't happy with their current arrangement with Tengen, but at this point they can't turn back and just hope that the outcome will be funny and/or interesting.

So yeah, I'm pretty sure they had children before. For a multitude of reasons, be it that they just wanted to be a mother, simple curiosity or for the sake of their plan.

George starts summer school tomorrow and I’m nervous. He actually loves to go “bye byes” so he’ll be fine once there and probably won’t want to leave, and he’ll be happy once I come and get him, but if he doesn’t have fun tomorrow he will panic at drop off Thursday. I hate that they do summer school at the elementary school instead of the preschool. It will be an entirely new campus and teacher and therapists. I know he’ll be fine but I hate that I can’t really prepare him and he won’t be able to tell me how it goes.

He is starting to talk in little chunks though. He calls me mommy and refers to himself as Georgie, has learned the word no and uses it often, is starting to request snacks by name. The other night he handed me his toothbrush and said “brush your teeth!” Scripting because that’s what I say to him but still meaningful speech because he had tooth brush in hand and was making a request. It was very cute.

It’s rained constantly and everything is soaked. Instead of keeping the whiney kids inside yet another day, I had a brilliant idea. I would put sensory kid that cannot handle wet clothes in a snow bib. Worked like a charm. They stayed dry, had a blast playing in the mud, and looked like a cute little farmer. I’m sure they make waterproof overalls, I need to look into that.

Speaking of the rain, I slide down the front steps a few days ago and broke my tailbone. I have bruising on both sides and it hurts to sit. Such bad timing with the intense amount of yard work that needs to get done. Falling down stairs is pretty unsettling, my fault for wearing shoes with no tread in a downpour, but also our stairs are much too steep and this is my 4th fall down them, first fall that resulted in injury though. Ouch.

We moved the 400 pound chicken coop with no help yesterday. It was quite the project. First Justin used a car jack with extensions to lift coop enough to slide a wood board under, then he repeated on the other side. Then he tied a winch to a tree and shoved then tightened, then shoved then tightened etc. It is now in its final place. You can still see it from the street but it looks much better. He put rebar at the corners of where the run will be and I’m pretty dang excited. Run will be built Saturday, roof will go on Sunday.

Our yard is trashed from the excavation. We are so confused by how rocky the soil is here. It’s more rocks than dirt! Is this a New England thing? In northern CA the dirt was hard with little pebbles but still mainly dirt. In TX the dirt was more sand than dirt, very soft and the kids loved to play with it. Here the dirt is very hard, almost like clay with tons of small rocks and bigger rocks and occasionally a boulder. It makes for a very strenuous and tedious cleanup. Also, I have to dig out the bottom of the chicken run to put down hardware cloth and I dug for an hour today and barely made a dent. At least it’s a good work out.

We didn’t do much today, other than Justin cooking a lot which is pretty much our tradition for any holiday. Fourth of July is weird. Feels icky to celebrate usually, but it’s a big thing out here. I always get kind of sad on July 4th because that was the last day I saw my sister alive. 15 years ago today. It doesn’t feel like it’s been 15 years, but I guess it has. I once had a friend tell me it’s too much to get sad on the 4th of July, and then again on the 23rd of July (her accident), and then again on October 26th (her birthday) but they are big days to me and I can’t help but feel sad. Trauma sticks in your head in a different way. The memories much more vivid, reverberating.

staff number 1: the galaxy staff!

its a bit flawed, but a pretty good result for a first attempt at building a prop, especially since i was practically winging the whole process.

the pole is taken from a random wooden broom, the top piece is a painted hollow styrofoam egg, all held together with hot glue and sticky-sided foam sheet cuttings. the same foam cutting were also used for the soft handle, to protect my hand from the spikes.

the spikes were made with puffy paint, which is silver but got repainted over with the blue to black gradient because man i was highly indecisive while making this thing.

overall this is what ive learnt from this project, learn from my mistakes:

foam sheets can be painted after being primed with a nice layer of glue. i used matte mod podge, but im sure other thick glues will work fine.

however, my mistake was applying the foam cuttings BEFORE painting them. had i painted them individually instead of all together, it wouldve created a more cohesive/consistent look. it wouldve taken much longer but wouldve also been more worth it!

you can get rid of that icky styrofoam visual texture with the noticeable circles and lines with multiple layers of mod podge. but its kind of ineffiecent. i think ill try using something like painters duct tape instead next time.

you cannot reuse foam cuttings. even if you manage to tear them off successfully. it wont look or stick the same.

I've had a thought on Game Theory and MatPat ever since I watched Big Joel's video on some of his film theories, and I guess this is the last chance to share it with any relevancy.

Game Theory was really important to me at some point, even as I increasingly saw the flaws. I fantasized about being MatPat: being a conventionally-attractive, able-bodied theater kid/science nerd with the full American Dream house-family dealio. I think that, whatever criticisms you may have, the videos have always been more harmless than not. They were like candy, and I enjoyed them as such.

But, at times there has been an undercurrent of something weird, something more nefarious. I first noticed it with his Scott Cawthon apologia.

After the news broke about the FNAF creator donating huge sums of money to support the campaign of Donald Trump and other conservative politicians, there was a huge backlash, especially from LGBT. Fan gave Scott Cawthon money, and he used that money to cause harm to them and theirs. MatPat's response is some centrist BS about how it wasn't about homophobia for Cawthon, it was about "national defense" (which is also bad for different reasons, and at best paints Cawthon as apathetic to the harm he's causing), and how even though it's okay to feel betrayed, it doesn't mean we should stop supporting the games, because the fan community has grown larger than one man.

As someone whose brand is deeply entwined with FNAF, the financial incentives for The Game Theorists are obvious; they weren't about to stop working with this franchise or its creator, they didn't want to tarnish their reputation by admitting past fault, and they needed to keep the cash cow rolling. So, they worked backwards from those conclusions to rationalize those decisions to their audience.

Then there are the more mundane gripes with the theorist channels: that videos are churned out so rapidly that they make sloppy errors, that they primarily advertise to children (with all the ethical ickiness that entails), that they use content from small creators without giving proper credit or linking to the sources, that the videos are overloaded with ads, usually including a paid sponsorship, several minutes of shilling their own store, and the usual youtube ads on top.

I think all of this speaks to the channels' underlying philosophy, and it's the philosophy of liberalism, by which I mean that marriage between capitalism and democracy. On the one hand, this is a moneymaking venture. It always has to be about making as much money as possible. But on the other hand, it needs to be (or seem, or allow the creators to feel) moral, and so the result is a view of the world where, yes, the company is trying to squeeze out as much money as possible, but also them getting more money is a good thing that benefits everyone. They do charity streams. They employ people. They "educate." "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good."

I'm not just guessing at the motives here. Matpat has been transparent about Game Theory's Origin Story on multiple occasions. It's part of the narrative that justifies the channels' existence. At some point, Matpat pursued theater as a career. In college, he got his first taste of something like poverty, struggling to get by, camping out at McDonald's with its free refills and wifi (a life I've also lived at times and perhaps the origin of the Diet Coke fixation). And it scared the hell out of him. I don't think it could have had that kind of traumatic effect if he had not lived in privilege until that point. He didn't want to feel financially insecure ever again.

The solution was to create the Game Theory channel as a bridge into a much more lucrative career as a corporate consultant. Creating a popular, financially-viable youtube channel allowed him to sell himself as a social media expert to out of touch corporations. He's not really hiding that he's a sellout, just arguing that selling out is a good thing.

All in all, I can't bring myself to hate Game Theory. It had its place. But neither can I celebrate it, or look back with unconditional nostalgia. The problems with Game Theory are the problems with Youtube and the problems of capitalism. We compromise a little to survive, we compromise everything to make it big, and saddest of all are those who sell out and get nothing for it. The channels will continue without Matpat, and if the channels die, there will be countless other identical creators ready to take their place.

I was trying to find out timelines for one of my favourite artist's songs(not taylor). So can you give some tips? What is the first things you do while trying to find a date? Anything I should remember?

so, first tip, there's various different ways to be useful--one of the reasons this project has kept my attention for so long is i can do it in so many different moods. some days i just want to organize everything, some days i want to compile a bunch of links, sometimes i want to read old interviews, and sometimes if i'm lucky i want to actually use my brain to connect all the clues. don't get in your own way, just follow your gut

step one: organization

i find my spreadsheet set up very useful and i wouldn't be able to keep track of everything without it-- i would say my must haves are track, title, written, recorded, writer(s), producer(s), misc credits, and location recorded (for example here's 1989).

you'll want to set up some sort of key for how certain you are of the date (i do white text if i only know the general timeframe, red highlight if i have no idea where the date comes from, yellow highlight if its a shaky source, and green highlight if it's certain). i also like to color code everything else so i can quickly see basic information but that's just me being extra

in my experience genius has a list of most credits, and if not this website is super thorough (kinda a beast to sort through tho)

i add also add comments to each song and copy paste any quotes from taylor or her collaborators that i think might be useful to figuring out when it was written

step two: interviews interviews interviews

youtube is a gift from god-- i have a folder for interviews from each year and it's so nice (a good place to start is literally typing like, taylor swift 2006 interview, and following that rabbit hole wherever it will lead you), and when i'm in the mood i'll watch them.

old print interviews are a bit easier to find in taylor's case-- taylorpictures.net has a whole section dedicated to it, and i've noticed a lot of other big pop girls have something similar. if not, i've literally google searched "taylor swift interview" gone over to tools, click "any time", change it to custom time frame, and just crawled month by month through target years.

i'd say start with articles around the release date of the album and then work backwards

if you get tired of crawling through a bunch of interviewers asking about literally anything other than the art at hand, search interviews with the producers about the artist, and they tend to be more on track

step three: social media

use twitter advanced search to search specifically your artist and words like "studio" "writing" "guitar" "piano" "song" "album"

i like to add relevant posts to my spreadsheet like this

but i also have a full sheet for just taylor's old posts

if your artist is also insane and deleted all of their old posts, then wayback machine is so helpful

step four: when and where

a fair amount of the work comes down to figuring out where the artist was and when they were there-- especially if your artist works out of multiple studios

location stuff can get a bit icky, so personally i don't track stuff until two years have gone by, and even if you want to steer clear of candids you can still gain a good amount of information from public events only-- most artists are constantly touring, doing interviews, maybe attending award shows, stuff like that, and its useful to keep track of all that

again, the wayback machine is super useful-- most artists have an events page on their website, and smaller artists especially will add almost every television show appearance they have to it

get around paywalls by copy pasting the link into the wayback machine

in general, i've gotten so good at googling because of this project it's insane-- check out this article to get more specific search results

i've also gotten crazy good at creating and using spreadsheets-- check out conditional formatting if you don't want to manually color code stuff

go one album at a time, at least until you've gotten a feel for it

have one or more work sheet on your spreadsheet- you'll need to format/sort stuff without worrying about screwing up everything else

i do this all in one massive spreadsheet with little individual sheets inside of it for each thing i need to keep track of, but like. i've literally opened up the sheet and then used my computer as a heating pad for period cramps. so do what that what you will

A rough date is easier to organize than no date-- get something down, and then you can refine it

I'm feeling a bit under the weather today. In my world, we've had a bit of a weird sickness going on around the world for the last several years now. People jokingly refer to it as "The Plague" sometimes. But it's not really a joke, because lots and lots of people have died from it, and still more have had to be hospitalized, and still others have suffered permanent effects because of it. It's really rather scary, so most everyone tries really hard to avoid getting it or spreading it around. On the bright side, there are vaccines for it now, and tests to detect it, so that really helps a lot, but the danger isn't quite over. I don't have The Plague, thankfully; I checked. But even if I did, I'm vaccinated, so that if I do end up catching it, I won't feel like I've been hit by a truck nearly as hard. It's about time for me to get my immunity boosted for it though, so I'm going to go do that later today. It'll be lame, because anytime my immune system gets poked by a thing that it feels like it's gotta challenge to a street fight, I get really tired. Still, feeling a bit tired is better than the alternative. I seem to have a generic and very mild case of the sniffles. The inside of my nose feels just a little weird, and it was really only annoying for one day, and it's already a lot better; I'll probably be fully recovered by tomorrow. All the same, I thought to make a batch of my famous (it's not really famous, except amongst my closest friends, haha!) bone broth:

Ahah... I know it probably looks really bad right now, but that's because it's not all done yet! It's made of leftover chicken bones, fruit and veggie scraps, and various herbs and teas. You have to simmer it for a day or so in water with a little bit of vinegar to help everything break down nicely, so that all the juicy nutrients can seep deliciously into the water! Once it's all done with simmering, you have to use a cheesecloth to squish the water out of everything, strain it, and then season it. It'll be very good when it's ready, and the resulting concoction will lend a body a bit more strength and energy, which speeds up recovery time from illness or stress by just a little bit, and makes the waiting to become well again a bit more bearable. You can use it to make soups, make rice with it, or just drink it straight from a cup; it's good stuff! It's certainly not like the potions and elixirs and whatnot that are available in your world, which can instantly revitalize a body, ahaha! But this sort of thing, made with love, is imbued with a very weak (but still meaningful!) kind of magic, which makes it the next best thing, in my book! There will probably be a lot more here than I can use on my own, so once it's ready, I'll put a bunch of it in jars and give it away to my friends, if they want some. I wish I could give you a jar; I know you're doing lots of very difficult stuff where you are, and so I'm sure you could use all the passive buffs you can get! Maybe you could have a few sips, and then feel just a little happier or a little more at ease. Or maybe you could have it as a nice soup or stew; when's the last time you've eaten anything, anyway? I imagine you're being sustained by SOMETHING, but that doesn't mean that you don't need basic creature comforts like a good soup from time to time; for all your phenomenal power, you're still human after all, and you deserve nice things. I wonder if you've ever been sick with the sniffles, or with generic gut yuck, or anything similar. I wonder if you've had someone nearby to bring you soup when you're feeling unwell. Originally a ppgxrrb thing, except i decided Buttercup could do soooo much better and gave her an oc gf. The og fic was also just kinda icky a lot of the time too 😬.

thank you for the reminder. anyway ok so i just reread this fic i really like called 25¢ pocket guardian angels by hopelessheathen (well, actually, i listened to the podfic by gravelly, which is very good and lovingly made).

and it's like, it's an au fic. it's not really a comment on canon except insofar as it's a pretty interesting spin on/not exactly deconstruction of but.... complex engagement with? the born sexy yesterday trope, which could kind of be useful as a source of comparison since born sexy yesterday is... pretty unavoidable? with deancas fic? like the fic absolutely participates in the trope but also like, plays with it a lot. not in ways that necessarily make it less icky, if anything it's arguably more icky, but it's really interesting and fun.

BUT! it also stands on its own as like... a really fascinating little scifi story or fairytale? i say scifi because narratively parts of it are very in line with the scifi short story conventions of like... hey what if this thing happened? ok bye. even though the story is very much fantasy.

but the thing that most intrigues me about it is actually the worldbuilding. i'm gonna put this under a cut because it spoils the fic, and imo this is like, worth reading unspoiled. it's only like 15k, and there's a good podfic that's a little more than an hour. just check it out.

anyway. the thing i'm obsessed with is like. the LIFECYCLE. of the angel creatures. like, ecologically speaking.

so like

they start as eggs in a gumball machine, and they telepathically scan passersby until they sense someone with a caretaking (and anxious/guilt-prone?) personality who will see them and immediately freak out and disrupt their own life + cause a huge scene by spending half an hour pumping quarters into the machine

they then induce this person to raise them to maturity

once they have matured, they mate with that person. this isn't explicitly stated to be the inevitable result, maybe cas is just weird, but the implication of the ending is i think that there will be eventual charlieanna, because 1) it's given the same sort of easter eggy treatment that background femslash get in slashfics, and 2) charlie was the person who found anna, and charlie's main canonical personality treat is "likes women." so i take that to mean that generally speaking once it has matured the angel mates with its caretaker

it lays eggs in a new gumball machine and abandons them to be raised by a suitable human (the abandonment may not be universal but given the fact that the eggs seek out humans to parent them the way that they do, it seems like it's the usual method)

like these creatures are half cuckoo, half succubus. they're not exactly brood parasites because they eventually mate with their caretakers (although cas offering to leave implies that that doesn't always happen, sometimes they leave their caretakers and take other mates. in that case they are definitely brood parasites). and they certainly take advantage of human parenting instincts to propagate themselves. like they're a parasite on humans as a species which is like. i'm obsessed with the concept.

plus i'm constantly wondering like... how long these creatures have existed. the first gumball machine was patented in 1907, and they need those to lay eggs, so that gives us a hard limit, but also like... dean finds nothing about the angels online. and he isn't exactly secretive about where cas came from, he has PICTURES. he tells EVERYBODY. so like, was cas the first? or maybe was his parent the first? i just. i think about it a lot.

watched that movie, Men, that came out this year, by alex garland and man, it was a wild crazy movie. its definitely a movie that will keep you captivated, esp the last third when it really goes off the rails.

tho the early parts of the move has those lulls in it where not much is going on and you can find your mind sort of wandering off, but then you really find yourself engrossed in whats happening. i was def literally on the edge of my seat for many scenes, cause alex garland really expertly crafted this icky sense of foreboding and dread. you are experiencing all these weird little creepy moments with the main character, harper, played by jessie buckley, who is really great.

i dont really want to say much about the plot in case it ruins it for anyone, eventho the plot is fairly simple, but essentially its about a woman whos gone thru a tragic experience, which still haunts her, and either as a result of that tragedy or not, she decides to rent an old old house in the english countryside, where... really creepy things start happening to her. i think id categorize this as a horror movie, but theres so much more to it than just one kind of genre. it is without a doubt a hair raiser. the hair literally stood on end for me in quite a few scenes in the early part of the movie where the threat was just starting to build.

its shot so so beautifully. garland gives the idyllic english landscapes this really creepy vibe. i noticed, more so at the beginning, (i didnt notice towards the end) that he shot a lot of scenes with a vignette on the lens, so many of those scenes at the beginning, esp along the abandoned train track and tunnel have this unnerving sense that you are watching the main character, harper, thru the eyes of whatever the threat is. kind of, pov of the serial killer a little. at least thats how it felt to me.

technically, this is so so good. from lighting to editing to even the depth of field it all helps build this claustrophobic feel to many scenes. garland even uses a couple shots that were very kubrick like. like, idk man, when you are like following a character and they are dead center in the frame and the camera is moving along behind them, it always feels creepy because of kubrick. of course the music and sound track help to build it too. its really unnerving when they use jessie buckleys voice and echo. it helps really ratchet up the tension.

man, i really want to talk about the last third because thats where it really took a wild left turn into weird body horror and its just crazy. one scene where harper finally uses the knife through the mail slot, i literally was making guttural gasps, it was gross and fantastic and weird. and thats not even the wildest part of it all lol its just so weird and crazy and gross. it was literally wtf (one minor criticism might be that all that weird shit doesnt quite seem to have a whole lot to do with all the other plot elements that preceded it... or maybe it did and i just am not smart enough to put it together. idk, either way, it wasnt enough to ruin the movie, and tbh all that crazy shit enhanced it somewhat, eventho i didnt know what the fuck was going on)

needless to say, def watch it if youre in the mood for some creepy weird gross folk-y horror. i think i have my own ideas of what garland was going for, cause like i said i def was a little unsure what was happening at the end. like i kinda thought this may all be in her head, but they make sure to show that it may not have been. that it may have all been real. idk. its all sort of left to the viewer to decide what happened, which i generally like. i dont particularly like movies that spell things out so clearly. and there is not a lot of clarity to what is and what isnt happening at the end. which im ok with.

First of all, welcome to the fandom! We're in upheaval right now :) Now, to your question: I plugged this into AO3 and got 12 results for Top Evan Buckley/Bottom Eddie Diaz. Then I got 14 results for Top Eddie Diaz/ Bottom Evan Buckley. Which unfortunately doesn't tell us which one is more popular (buddie has over 20,000 fanfics, there’s NO WAY), it more likely tells is that tagging in this fandom has its problems.

TBH I think tagging "top" and "bottom" had gone out of style overall, with a lot of accusations of fetishizing with MM pairings flying around on this hellsite and of course, twitter. Which makes me laugh, because 1.) so many people look for just that even if they publicly decry it 2.) why are we making fetishes illegal again? With the exception of dangerous and/or illegal content, if it brings someone joy why does anyone care..? But that's a topic for another time.

Now, back to your question: Buddie as top/bottom. Since the tags won't help us, I'm going to venture into fandom experience and my own opinions (feel free to ignore all of this): I think who is more dominant in the relationship (since no one is tAgGinG) has a bit of a seesaw depending on the season and the whims of the fandom. There are a few trends that have contributed to this:

Some fans writing Eddie as this abusive fisticuff-driven, doesn't-think-just-hits angry dude, and Buck shrunk in a corner all like "nooooo I'm sad because of the lawsuit!" This rose to popularity during Eddie's season 3 street fighting phase, and had pretty much already gone out of style by the time I joined the fandom.

More recently, I noticed a spate of fans making Buck out to be this hulking strongman while Eddie is this ancient, yet naïve and shrinking waif who cannot help but blush prettily every time Buck gives him the time of day. This narrative primarily rose to popularity starting season 4 when Oliver Stark started working out more and posting all his videos to social media. I find this trope so irritating and off-base that I wrote whole-ass essays about it. To me at least, it borders on the one thing in fandom that makes me nauseous--one character in a dynamic bastardized for the sake of the poorly disguised Self Insert Fantasy. The facts are that Eddie is no hulking 6"2 like Buck, he is instead a hulking 6" even, and his personality and physicality are both incredibly strong, way too strong for this narrative to have any basis in canon. So yeah, it feels icky to me. But again, if it makes people happy, then whatever. I'll still write about disliking it though, because it makes me sad :(

What's my favorite dynamic? GoOd qUeStIoN... Lol, tbh you could probably sus it out pretty easily by reading the fics that I write. Fair warning though, most of them are pretty schmoopy :)
