oh, this one was hard because I tried very hard to keep to just one sentence (not entirely successful on that but very close). but, in no particular order:

from "waking up slow": She doesn’t really need or want a response; Tara being here at all is answer enough.

from "let's get physical": He doesn't respond right away, running his fingers along the skin of her leg, then he says, “We’re all growing, Soph.  Things can change.”

from "instruct me in the dark": Leaning forward across the table, Sophie replies in a low voice, “No.  I just thought that you aren’t the kind of woman to put up with a man who couldn’t properly fuck you.”

from "keep with me forward (all through the night)": There will be a time in the very distant future that Sophie will think about how the two great love affairs of her life started in a similar fashion.

from an unpublished leverage/hunger games au that I'm still writing: She stares up at him, feeling heat bloom in her face under his intense gaze, and she smiles like she’s flattered rather than pleased that she’s finally found an opening to manipulate him.

They don't talk about it.

But there's no way Nate should know those things. No way the client could have told him, no way he could've figured it out on his own. Not when these things were nothing more than fleeting thoughts from the mark. But Sophie notices him quietly go for the scotch behind the counter and rub at his head in pain with extra vehemence some days despite the latest con having no personal connection to him.

They don't talk about it.

But someone should've recognized Sophie on that con. There's no way she could have that many characters per con. No way none of those diplomats didn't recognize her from any of her previous cons. Not when she didn't change any more than her clothes and accent. But Nate notices her features seem to flicker at the peace and safety of home when she thinks he isn't watching.

They don't talk about it.

But no one could've survived that. And certainly not looking the way he does. There's no way he didn't come out of that fight broken and bloodied to all hell. Not when instead he walks out with a purposeful stride and only a clenched jaw, rolling his shoulders. But when he's cooking and accidentally burns himself, Parker notices the unmarked skin left behind.

They don't talk about it.

But not all vents are human sized. They all saw the size of the vent cover as she exists with a grin. There's no way she could've fit in there. Not when the human body can't bend that way, a way that even the greatest contortionist can't bend. But some days Hardison notices as she seems to stretch and bend before his eyes when she's feeling relaxed and safe enough.

They don't talk about it.

But that's not how computers work. There's no way Hardison could access that kind of thing. Not when he describes how he did it like that. Not when he does it so quickly like that. Not when he says he's taken berries and the next thing they know he's recreated a colonial era journal to perfection. But Eliot swore he shoved a glass of water at him, not more goddamn orange soda.

They don't talk about it, the thing lingering over their heads as they conduct each con, the unacknowledged thing between the five of them that's a little deeper than just a desire to take down the rich and powerful.

They aren't perfect, they all know that- sometimes they're too good with their covers, sometimes they have to shift gears as the con unfolds before them, but somehow things always seem to work out.

But no one asks about it, so-

But wait, there's more Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day! I have four more books that I CANT POST YET and it's kind of killing me.

I decided I was going to try to finish all four of the books promised to other people that were languishing as WIPs, and I didn't get them in the mail in time to arrive with their recipients before FFWAD, but my GOD, did I get them done and mailed! (@renegadepublishing keeps organizing the events and challenges, and that is what I need some days to get things done.)

First off, there is a copy of Build Me No Shrines, one of my favourite MDZS fic, on its way to occultings, and I have already shared the first copy I made this past Feb here along with all the reasons you should read it. The author copy shows that I've had some more experience, and a few tiny typeset tweaks, and I'm not stalking the tracking number at allll...

The series Shelter Me by thingswithwings is two Leverage fic, Old Dog and New Tricks, an Eliot-centric OT3 full of heart and kink! It is in book shape, on its way to its new home.

Ten Prides in Portland by Leiascully is the same OT3 pairing, what it says on the tin, the slow evolution of Eliot finding queer community over a decade. And Simple Machines is another two-fic series, this one by coffeesuperhero, an adjacent Eliot finds queer community OT3 story. Both books are also headed to their respective authors.

I did not plan the Leverage theme! It just happened! I will go on at greater lengths when I post the finished pictures, but I very much wanted to get a rapid-fire rec post out today for FFWAD.

okay so. I've binged almost all of leverage (3 eps left) and now wanna scream and chew cardboard I mean. I mean. hear me out here okay?

first I was like yeah okay sure I'm in a not doing things mood so might as well watch. I don't know any of these ppl except for like a handful of guest stars, but I liked the team's brand of weird and their dynamics basically right from the first ep. and sure the show's a little naive and a lot moralizing (don't like the moralizing), but the banter and the shenanigans and the fact that I suddenly remembered that I like heist movies but somehow haven't watched leverage until now is what kept me clicking on the next ep and the next and the next.

and I mean. this is tumblr ive seen gifsets here and there and I'm aware of the ship (you cannot be on this webbed site and not be aware of the existence of basically every major ship in basically everything, so) - but for the entire 4 and a half seasons I was like yep yep love the dynamic and really love the whole slow progression of rivals to teammates to friends and yeah okay Parker and Hardison dating makes sense but I'm not feral abt it and I still cannot see the threeway ship I mean they're friends and I love that for them and then AND THEN. and then I watched the dc ep. you know the one I mean. with the bomb and the virus and all the intense feelings and and I'm like *Eliot voice* oh come on!!! I did not require any new ships like I'm not much of a fandom person at all these days and yet here we are. facepalms and muffled screams into the pillow.

and I was like where! is more! of that I need more of that!!! after the dc ep and honestly I've watched the next couple eps on autopilot waiting for well not the progression but the same intensity of the dynamic at least but hahaha no said the show. and now it's 8 am and I'm writing this instead of sleeping or diving headfirst into the deep end of the fic pool and I know there's still those three eps left and then the entire renewed show but it's too much and not enough at the same time do you know what I mean

struggling with articulating, as always, what gets me about cleo and bdubs not just in third life but all of them after. because they're inextricably linked but in a different way than etho and bdubs choose to be; cleo is very much on her own shit and killing it at that, always, having died before bdubs when they were paired but outliving him every time after. i cannot think about the crastle in detail otherwise i will lose my mind but, like -

there's the crastle, and then. last life and bdubs says now it feels like home when she shows up and etho says i leave you alone for a minute and you're already teaming up again. when bdubs and cleo both go red in ep 4 the first part of her ep 5 in LL is them fucking around with an enchanting table trap where she tells him that no one will trust her any more than they trust him but then it cuts to her typing a chat message about being with the enchanter and so vulnerably alone with it. she bullies etho about kicking bdubs out because bullying people is fun, and bdubs is her buddy. but bdubs is the excuse - she's more interested in extorting something back from etho for looting her corpse in a way that throws him all the way off balance for a moment than she is in helping bdubs.

etho and bdubs break the rules of last life about nothing carries over by from their first seconds reminiscing about their pasts but cleo also remembers and won't let the past go. she trusts etho because bdubs trusted him. she isn't tore up about bdubs leaving red because she figures etho will get him a life somehow, and that's not despair or resignation because the choices to make and her own sense of justice still lead her back to yellow in the end with her own alliances. she's not tied down to bdubs, but she chooses to acknowledge their past and make exceptions for him even only as a diversion from whatever she's mainly doing, because cleo has her own sense of fairness with the bigb betrayal and the promises she makes.

in double life she chastises bdubs for homewrecking because she's never lied to him, because they both know they have history even when they're not supposed to. it doesn't tie them together forever in terms of most important - cleo chooses to partner with scott who also has chosen to ditch his assigned soulmate. she doesn't choose bdubs! but she holds him to what they've shared before even if she knows they're divorced. i don't talk enough about how much i love and respect that, because she stands so much on her own but her standing on her own is because of her recognition of what other people have done for or to her, and what she's willing to do in return. i'm feeling quite sane this evening about it all

I don't trust myself to write Leverage fic, I just don't think I could capture the nuance of everyone. But I think if I did it'd be a road trip fic.

It's sometime in the mid-s2 era. Everyone's kinda gone to ground after either Nate's whole going to prison thing or after Sophie has had to fake her death. Either way Hardison, Parker, and Eliot have lost that stabilizing mentor energy they had previously. Not that the three aren't perfectly capable on their own, but it's a rapid, dramatic, and emotional shift in the dynamic you're used to and you've got to part ways with the people you care the most about in the world.

So after some time passes -- enough that everyone can do what they need to do to be sure that they're safe but not enough time to feel settled to leave the safe house and go home -- someone (Alec, probably with his slightly more average childhood, but maybe Eliot who didn't gave the best childhood but we see these moments of average stability throughout the series) suggests a road trip.

So they gather together: Hardison and Parker and Eliot to reclaim the stability that they've lost. While Nate mourns Sophie, or she rages at Nate. And Hardison and Eliot take Parker to the places she asked about in the Three Days of Hunter job. The places where there are real conspiracies, the places that are really just tourist traps, the places that they decide along the way that they want to break in and see.

And along the way they find the things they needed to so they can go back. The trust, the camaraderie, the joy. Things they hadn't ever really lost with eachother but can be hard to separate from the inside this codependent knot of reclaimed family. And maybe it's a ship fic, maybe it's not, maybe when you fit together the way they do it doesn't matter. Either way by the end they're ready to go home and get back to work.

But mostly it's about Parker getting to see Area 52.
