Pretty Close (Full Moon Ficlet #497)

Going across the country to college had been Stiles’ dream since the time he realized there was a world beyond the borders of Beacon Hills. His mom used to bring him college brochures from the counselor’s office, and he’d tear out the prettiest pictures and hang them on his walls. When he was ten, his mother had bought him a map, and they started putting pins where all the images he hung had been taken.

After she passed away, Stiles had taken everything down and thrown them away. He found out later that his dad had pulled everything out of the trash and put them in a box in the attic in case Stiles regretted his rash decision to get rid of them. Which he did the first time his counselor asked where he was considering applying for college.

The map and photos went back up. As Stiles put the pins in, he used different colors. He would research each school. Red pins were schools he knew were out of his price range, even with scholarships and financial aid. Green were the schools where he would definitely apply. And the blue pins meant they had pretty pictures but no programs of study which interested him.

Scott complained when he came by and found Stiles putting everything back up, asking why Stiles wanted to go so far away. “It’s what my mom wanted,” Stiles said, smiling as he put a green pin in New York City for NYU. He remembered his mother telling stories about living there when she was younger and how much she loved it. He would have to ask Derek about his time there if he’d gone to any of the same places his mother had gone.

He’d ask Derek the next time he saw him, but the man had been acting strangely lately. Every time the pack got together, Derek seemed to have something to do on the other side of the room from Stiles. He knew things had been strange around the preserve, but usually, Derek came to Stiles for help. They’d gotten to the point where Stiles had been comfortable calling them friends, and Derek never objected to the title. Lately, though, Derek spent more time with Danny and Lydia. Stiles frowned at how much that bothered him.

One night, about a week after he’d gotten the map back up, Stiles sat at his computer, an application to NYU open in front of him. He read the essay questions aloud to himself, “Why NYU? We would like to know more about your interest in NYU. What motivated you to apply to NYU? Why have you applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and/or area of study? If you have applied to more than one, please also tell us why you are interested in these additional areas of study or campuses. We want to understand – Why NYU? 400-word maximum.” Stiles gaped. “Maximum? I can’t even introduce myself with fewer words than that.”

A thud behind him had Stiles whirling around in his desk chair and falling to the ground from the momentum when he tried to stop himself. An amused chuckle had him lifting one finger in the air, increasing the laugh to a near guffaw. Pushing himself up, Stiles glared at Derek, who stood just inside his window, the backpack strap over one shoulder and his eyes sparkling in the setting sunlight.

“Something I can help you with?” he asked. “I guess Danny and Lydia were too busy for you.”

Derek frowned, his eyebrows drawing together into nearly a straight line. He set the backpack down on Stiles’ bed and opened it, pulling out a handful of college brochures. Stiles noticed colored tags sticking out of the top. He set them down on the bed and settled next to them, all while Stiles stared at him.

“I want to go back to college,” Derek said, moving the brochures to his lap and staring down at them. Stiles tried dropping down onto his desk chair. It rolled away, and he ended up sprawled on the floor again, gaping up at Derek. “I never finished my degree.”

“And suddenly you do? Why not ask Lydia or Danny?” Stiles asked, still feeling the sting. Derek fanned out the brochures so that Stiles could see them. He looked from the stack to the map on the wall. Each and every green pin was represented. “What is this?”

“The schools I am considering,” Derek responded, finally looking up Stiles. He swallowed and opened his mouth before snapping it closed again.

“And it’s just a coincidence they are the same ones where I’m applying?” Stiles asked, reaching out and tapping each brochure as he spoke. “One is an incident, two is a coincidence, three's a pattern, and four is enough for a warrant.”

“Is not wanting to be far from you an arrestable offense?” Derek asked, his voice so quiet that Stiles almost missed it.

Surprisingly, his father, passing by, did not. “It is if he’s under eighteen or doesn’t want you there.” He looked at Stiles, who kept looking between Derek, his dad, and the wall. “Who am I kidding? As long as he’s eighteen.” He smirked when Stiles squawked, and Derek’s ears turned red. “Although, distance does make the heart grow fonder. Although, I'm not sure how that works with ‘wolves.” With that comment, he walked away.

Derek and Stiles stared at each other. “So, you decided to go back to college to stay near me?” Derek shrugged. Stiles smiled to himself and crawled over to the bed, leaning against Derek’s legs. “So, are you living on campus with me or getting an apartment?”

Derek knocked his knee against Stiles’ shoulder. “Let’s figure out where we’re going before we figure out where we’re living.” Stiles raised his eyebrows, and Derek smirked. “You said I wanted to stay close to you.”

“I guess living together would be pretty close,” Stiles said, smiling as he reached over his shoulder for the first of Derek’s brochures, relieved that the literal and figurative distance between them wasn’t going to be great.

synopsis: Really, who falls asleep in a subway? Apparently, you do, and Bakugou can’t help but feel protective over it. It’s because he’s training to be a hero, right? It’s not like he likes you, right? Right?!

Bakugou hated the subway.

There was almost nothing there to like. It was dirty, caused Bakugou to feel like he couldn't breathe, and frankly, ever since the day he read that the air in a subway was %30 pieces of human skin, he didn't want to breathe, either.

The traumatic effect that piece of information had on him was something he never got over. But it wasn't only how dirty the air was, either. It was dusty and dry, and it always caused his eye contacts to dry on his eyes, causing him to see blurry for a while, and there had been many incidents where Bakugou had furiously rubbed his eyes, and made himself blind for a good few minutes.

People there always seemed to be almost as rude and angry as him, most of them thinking they had the right to sit wherever and whenever, and people invading his personal space wasn't something unusual, either. And the smell, oh god, the smell. Some people obviously hadn't discovered what a fucking soap or deodorant was since he could sometimes feel the smell in his brain.

All this, even though he hadn't even seen the real torture. With the mean, scary look on his face and the way he stood that screamed, stay away from me if you're smart enough, people usually tried to do just that, so Bakugou didn't know what his space being invaded actually could be, or how bad the smell could get.

It was a warm day when he had met you. When he saw you barging in the last second, right before the doors closed behind you, he scoffed, slightly amused. You looked like you were running for your dear life, chest heaving, a thin layer of sweat forming on your temples, clothes disheveled, and hair messy, but you had a proud smile on your lips despite all that.

Crimson eyes followed you as you happily sighed when you noticed the seat across Bakugou was free, dropping yourself on the hard surface. You looked around, realizing there was almost no one around the 10-meter radius of you, the seats were vacant, but people were crowding a bit further down the subway. Your brows furrowed with confusion, and only then did you notice the ash-blonde across you, his gaze piercing through you, the mean scowl on his lips reminding you of a wolf.

The moment your eyes met, Bakugou had expected you to jump to your feet and run away since he had become well-known after the sports festival and many incidents that had forced him to the tv. And even if someone didn't recognize him, the slightest glare from him was enough to make people run with their tails between their legs, but not this time, apparently, since you dared to cock your head to the side and smile at him.

Smile at him! It was almost an insult! When was the last time anyone actually did that? Especially a stranger? Or maybe you weren't a stranger, was that it? Looking at it now, you did have a familiar face, and it felt like he had seen you quite a few times before. But the more he tried to remember, the more the memory of you went deeper into his brain, causing him to grit his teeth subconsciously and look at you even more intensely. Bakugou wasn't aware he was staring at you like he was trying to see your soul, red gaze never faltering a second away from you.

It was when you tilted your brows slightly upwards, your pretty smile turning into an awkward one, he realized he was staring for the past station. Bakugou's brows snapped together, annoyed at himself, but he was also aware of how his face felt warmer than usual. He gritted his teeth with an angry grunt, looking away from you and fixing his eyes on the stupid advertisement that was right across from him, and he could swear he heard a muffled laugh coming from your way. Bakugou was surprised at how much he wanted to look at you, but his pride wouldn't let him do so, and so he kept staring at the poorly made advertisement brochure.

Bakugou was a proud, smug man, and he always prided himself on the amount of control he had over himself. But that day, he had let himself down. What was this stupid force that kept making him flick his eyes your way almost every five minutes? It felt like his body was possessed, and it was impossible to suppress his curiosity and not look at you. Bakugou had looked around if there was anyone else looking at you and to try and see if this was a quirk of some sort since it made no sense.

He grunted in annoyance when he couldn't help himself once again and glance at you, but it wasn't a curt look this time. His eyes narrowed and widened when he took a glimpse of you, of your relaxed body, head falling back and eyes closed.

"What the hell?" He muttered to himself, leaning forward slightly to try and understand just what the fuck you were- were you sleeping? The realization of how you were, in fact, fucking sleeping had hit him hard, brows shooting upwards, his eyes were wide with confusion and a wave of slight anger.

Were you dumb? Did you have no rational part in your brain? General knowledge of some sorts? Who in their right mind slept in a fucking subway? Where criminals swarmed, thieves lurking in the corners, waiting for people to slip for a second so they could steal a watch, phone, or a wallet easily, and you were sleeping?

Bakugou had no idea why he was so fired up about someone he had seen only half an hour ago. He couldn't help but jump in his place, ready to fight, hand itching for a punch whenever someone as much as walked before you, growling and shooting a dirty, scary look when he caught anyone looking your way more than half a second, even the baby that stood in the corner.

He was a hero, after all, right? It was only normal he wanted to protect you, right? Right? God fucking damn it, when were you even going to wake up? He had no idea how you were so relaxed to be able to sleep in a subway, but it caused him more stress than he had felt the past ten years.

When Bakugou noticed you finally shifting in your place and opening your eyes the second the next station's name was announced, he took a breath of relief. You started to gather your stuff as if you hadn't just woken up from a deep ass slumber, yawning and checking your phone for the time. Bakugou was watching you dazed, shocked at how someone could even do that. If pulling his interest and gaze towards you wasn't your quirk, this had to be it.

You glanced at him, his gaze meeting yours, and you smile once again, causing his heart to make an odd fucking pause, a snarl appearing on his lips, and he scoffs. But instead of that making you furrow your brows and turn around, you laugh again and turn around.

Bakugou had replayed that day over and over again in his head and had arrived at one conclusion.

You were mad.

You had to be at least a bit mad since it wasn't the most normal thing to smile at strangers as if you knew them for years, especially with a smile as charming as yours, and it was straight-up insane to sleep in a public place, a dangerous place like a subway.

But whatever conclusion he ended up with, he still couldn't get you out of his mind. It was the stupidest fucking thing ever, made no sense thinking about a stranger you had seen once, but you somehow didn't feel like a stranger. Of course, he didn't feel like he knew you for years, (even though Bakugou thought everyone else but him were just extras, he never forgot a face he saw), but you didn't feel like a threat, either.

The alerting feeling that formed in his stomach whenever he was around people he didn't know, or sometimes even with the people he did know, wasn't there that time.

Maybe he was just overthinking.

Of course, he was over fucking thinking. He had been thinking about a stranger for almost two days straight. (And he hadn't seen you ever since.)

It was such an odd behavior of him that even his friends had noticed something was wrong. Mina had done her best to get a word from him but failed, and Kirishima and Kaminari had declared it their mission to try and cheer Bakugou, and it only meant more for him to deal with.

"Hey, Bakubro, I'm going to the mall today with friends, wanna tag along?" Kaminari asked him the 20th time that day, not even aware it was the worst thing to say if he wanted Bakugou to come. "Look at me you damn Pikachu," Bakugou finally snapped, "If you ask me that one more fucking time, I swear to god-"

"Hey, hey, let's not get violent." Kirishima interrupted before Bakugou finished his threat, thinking it was the best before he spat some illegal shit out. "Then make him fuck off." Bakugou snarled.

"Yeah, actually, Kami? What are you even trying to do, asking him to come to your date?"

"It's a fucking date?" Bakugou burst, but Kaminari had already sprinted out of the room. "Did he ask me to third fucking wheel? How dense is he?!"

"Calm down, Bakugou." Kirishima sighed. "What's up with you these days, even more irritated than normal?"

"Huh, what the fuck does that even mean?"

"I'm just sayin'." Kirishima shrugged. "You're acting extra grumpy these past few days. You know you can talk to me if you-"

"Ah, don't start with the cheesy shit, shitty fucking hair. I'm fine." Bakugou cut him off, but his frown was now a bit softer, voice calmer.

"If you say so," Kirishima shrugged. "Hey, by the way, I'm going downstairs to the general studies to change something about my costume, wanna come?"

"General studies? Why the fuck would I go there? You've been visiting that place a lot lately, too." Bakugou asked a little too aggressively, his brows raising when Kirishima grinned. "What, afraid I'll steal your fan?"

"My fan?"

Fan? Bakugou had a fucking fan? Not that he cared, of course, but it still did feel-

Kirishima shrugged with a grin. "You know, the cute student who helped with your gauntlets? Maybe pay a visit to them sometime, they seem to like you a little." Kirishima chuckled when Bakugou kept looking at him blankly. All Bakugou could remember about the person who did his gauntlets was just how pretty their eyes were since he hadn't seen anything but that. He remembered how they always had a flimsy mask on, so it could filter the dust that covered everything in their work station, including the open half of their face.

"I'm not gonna go see an extra just because they like me." He scoffed, but Kirishima could see how Bakugou was dying inside to learn more about this fan of his.

"Sure, whatever you say, bro." He grinned cheekily, gathering his bag and walking downstairs.

It was the third-day Bakugou had finally stopped thinking about you nonstop, and it felt like freedom. The third time was the charm, wasn't it?

Of course, not.

You just had to show up the day he was over it, didn't you? You had once again sprinted through the doors just before they closed, heaving in the dirty air, face flushed. You stood up, trying to regain your composure as you smiled proudly at yourself and looking around to find a free seat.

It didn't take long for you to spot the angry blonde, lips pressed together angrily and vermillion eyes looking directly at you.

A bright smile appeared on your face just then, and even though you hadn't expected him to do anything, you were surprised when he averted his eyes away from you with a curt nod and a grunt. It had to mean he had acknowledged your smile, right? Well, you hoped it did since you were grinning stupidly at yourself.

You sat on your spot across from him, noticing how people stood even further away from you this time. Glancing at the handsome blonde across you, you tried and couldn't catch his crimson eyes.

You sighed, frustrated, not aware that Bakugou was even more so. He had promised himself that he wasn't going to be a creep and stare at you like the last time, but your occasional side-eyes and those doe-like glances weren't helping his case the slightest. He wanted to meet your gaze, he really did, but Bakugou also had pride that forbade him from doing so, so he was left there, frustrated and confused.

He was able to keep that up for eight minutes (he had checked, eight minutes and 34 fucking seconds) before he had finally looked at you. Apparently, all it took was eight minutes for you, too, to fall asleep.

You had fallen asleep.

Again?!

"For fucks sake." Bakugou cursed, pressing his fingers on the bridge of his nose and clenching his teeth. He had already concluded you were mad, but a second time? Was this a fucking habit or something?

He grunted in annoyance, but he couldn't take his eyes off you. You looked so relaxed and calm, the smallest smile on your lips, your head moving along with the movements of the train, hands weakly clutching your bag and phone. He felt almost jealous of how reckless you were.

Almost being the keyword, though.

"Don't you fucking get close." He snarled at the man that had been watching you for a few minutes, and he had only taken a step towards you before he heard the blonde and immediately retreated.

His 'come a little closer and I'll bite your head off' look never once faltering, Bakugou was feeling exhausted when he heard your station's name announced, and you opened your eyes. (despite the earbuds that were in your ears? You couldn't have heard the station's name, so how were you able to wake up right on time?)

You gathered your stuff and raised on your legs, just as the train took a sharp turn and caused you to lose your balance, stumbling over to the blonde. "Fuck!" You muttered as you tried to gain your balance back, but the hand that caught you from your wrist did it for you.

"Th-thank you." You told him, sounding a bit out of breath. You chuckled when he grunted. "Be careful, dumb- just be careful." He muttered, eyes slightly widening when he realized he was about to insult you.

You chuckled once again, and Bakugou had to stop himself from smiling back. "See you later, Bakugou-kun." You waved a shy hand, expecting him to sit back in his place, but instead, he looked at you, baffled.

"How do you know my name?

It was hard to surprise Bakugou. Not only was he extremely smart, but he was also very cautious and usually thought almost everything that could go wrong or not.

But he was genuinely, very sincerely shocked when you had started laughing at his question. Out loud, too. You were bending slightly forwards as you laughed, and Bakugou was both amazed and afraid of the motion. You had one of the prettiest laughs he had seen or heard, but this was the most awkward time you could have shown him that.

He had asked you how you knew his name, and you were laughing? He was starting to think you were even crazier than he thought you were. "You're quite popular, you know." You told him. "It's almost impossible to not know about you, especially if- well, after the sport festival, I'd say." You shrugged, pressing your lips in a mischievous smile, and Bakugou had noticed how you stopped yourself before something had slipped out of your mouth.

"Of course, I am." He replied smugly, but his eyes were watching you now even closer as if he was trying to solve a puzzle.

"Well, I have to go now, thanks again!" You smiled and waved goodbye, and Bakugou couldn't stop his scowl turning into an awkward smile.

It had turned into an odd form of agreement.

As days passed, you found yourself sitting closer to him, and after almost a week of bumping into each other, you were now sitting next to him, and he had no complaints.

He thought it was a bit better, actually. Not because he liked, it, of course, he didn't like being so close to you that your shoulders brushed when you moved, your head falling on his shoulder after only a few minutes of riding the train, sitting so close that your smell filled his senses.

No, of course, he didn't like that, and Bakugou liked having you sit so close to him because that was more convenient, and nothing else. It was easier to scare people away, to track if anyone walking before you was picking and sliding your phone into their pockets.

And maybe, just maybe, he might be liking your conversations, too. It wasn't much since you were almost always asleep, but when you weren't, Bakugou decided it wasn't the worst.

"So, mr. future number one hero," ah, and there was that. You referred to him as that often, and even though he was well aware it was mostly teasing, he had to admit it did affect his ego. "How was your day?"

"Fucking long." He sighed, and you giggled. "You always say that!"

"That's cause every day is fucking long!" He groaned, but he had an odd, almost affectionate smile on his lips that just made your heart giddy. "Well, that's hero course for you." You chuckled, biting your lip as you debated whether he'd push you off if you dropped your head on his shoulder now.

This had become your favorite part of the day. Not only was his caramel scent addicting, and it caused you to have the best sleep of your life (you found yourself unable to sleep without caramel scent and the safe feeling it brought to you, so you had to purchase caramel-scented candles), but he was also always warm.

So you did, deciding to live the moment to its best, closed your eyes and dropped your head, half expecting to be thrown off. But he didn't, chuckled instead, the vibrations of his laugh sending chills through your body. "Sleepy already?" He muttered into your hair, surprising you since you thought he wasn't the type to be comfortable with intimacy much, but he looked relaxed.

You could almost feel him smirking when you nodded softly. "Your day was obviously fucking long as well."

"Ah, man! I forgot my phone downstairs." Kirishima cussed, rolling his eyes at himself. "Hey, Bakubro, I have to leave immediately, but could you pick my phone up for me?"

"Do I look like a fucking maid from there?"

"Please, please! I have to go, and maybe you'll see your fan, too!" Bakugou's brows furrowed, "Whatever, if it'll make you shut the fuck up." He sighed annoyedly, he wouldn't have agreed any other day, but he had nothing better to do since you had texted him about an hour ago that you were going to be late for the train that day. Something about the school, you had told him.

"Really? Dude, you're a lifesaver, thanks!" Kirishima sighed relieved. "Just wake them up if they're asleep! They're like a cat, almost always sleeping in a corner." He added before he left the room.

Somehow, that description sounded awfully familiar, Bakugou thought.

"Oi, is anyone fucking here?" He called into the dim litten room when he arrived, mumbling to himself something about extras and dumbasses. He had visited the room once or twice when he was having his gauntlets remade, and why did he feel like he was missing something?

"Oi?" He shouted one more time, red gaze stumbling on the figure that was in the corner of the room, almost hiding behind the table, sleeping. His eyes found a half-melted caramel-scented candle on the table, wondering if it was safe to have a candle in a workshop like this one. A mask and workshop clothes stood right next to the candle.

"Hey, I'm fucking talking to... you." His voice trailed off when they lifted their head, stretching their arms when their eyes found the dumbfounded blonde.

"Oh, hey Katsuki-kun!" You cheered, rising to your legs.

"What the hell are you- why are you... What the fuck?"

You kept your silence, a mischievous smile on your lips as you waited for him to regain his thoughts. You watched as he connected the pieces, a lightbulb almost visible above his head. "You're a fucking student here!" He yelled, and you couldn't help but giggle at how accusing he sounded.

"Guilty as charged." You raised your hands, teasing him, knowing this was a one-time chance.

"Ah, would you look at the time." You spoke, inspecting the nonexistent watch on your wrist. "We should hurry if we want to catch the next train, you know." You grinned, watching him as he tried to suppress the smile creeping upon his lips.

"I guess so." He muttered, frowning as he looked away, but it was only to hide the blush that was settling on his cheeks.

Four Words, One Reply (Colt x MC)

A/N: I haven’t written anything recently because my muse was GONE after prom on Friday. Muse said that she needed a break because she got everything she wanted. Back now, for better or worse. Here’s a bit of fluff, a bit of wish fulfillment for me and PLEASE let this offering of fluff atone for the angst I posted earlier.

Ellie dreaded the day that the letters stopped coming. The worst of it was the terror, deep in her soul, that she would never know. Would he stop writing when he fell out of love? When he was sentenced to jail? Worse?

Her roommate thought it was romantic. "No one writes letters anymore, Ellie. It's sweet." Little did she know that it was likely a necessity, a way to avoid being tracked. Electronic communication could be dangerous and she was certain she didn't even have Colt’s current phone number. All she had were the letters.

They came unexpectedly, with no rhythm. Some months, she would get a letter a week, with varying return addresses, some with stamped return envelopes, to varying cities, so she could write back if she wanted. She always did.

Some months, there were no letters. The worst was four months, spanning the summer and start of fall semester of junior year. Ellie was in a panic, barely able to sleep until, finally, a thin envelope in her mailbox, no details, no explanation, only an "I love you, Ellie." She cried, sobs in the middle of the campus center, oblivious to the stares around her.

Sometimes they came with money, always cash. Never a ton, but enough to make her worried about what he was doing. Always earmarked for something, $400 for new school books, $100 for her "first legal drink at Flanagan's and a cab back home." At first, she sent it back; she didn't want his money (she wanted him) and felt bad taking it. He would return it to her, quickly, with a gentle admonishment that it was his way of feeling connected, a way of being there with her in spirit. She took it more often than not now but, when the nights were long and the nightmares were strong and the terror wouldn’t subside, she would send his money back, knowing it was the fastest way to get letter in return, to know that he was still ok. And, though it made her uneasy, she did let him buy her first legal drink.

She knew, with their last conversation in LA, that she was signing herself up for a bit of loneliness. He told her that he needed time, he couldn’t be in LA, he needed to get away. She understood, she got it. She knew the memories this place had for him. She asked him to come with her; wasn’t Boston far enough away? She still remembered his sad eyes, the last kiss. He told her he would wait for her, but he didn’t expect anything, said he didn’t know when he would see her next, but he would, one day. She didn’t know if he was trying to outrun his grief or hide from it, but she prayed he succeeded.

And now this, a month before her graduation, a cryptic note, barely a letter, on the back of a photograph. She could recognize the image, the Bean (he was in Chicago?) and pored over the picture, looking for a hint of him. She couldn't find Colt, no smirk, no leather jacket but, in the corner of the reflecting mirror, warped in the curve of the monument, she finally spied what he wanted her to see. A sleek bright pink European import, looking amazingly like her car back in LA. And on the back, four words and a return envelope, addressed to PO Box in Pittsburgh. She read those words, over and over and over again, in class, in bed, memorizing Colt’s scrawl as if it would bring him back to her, in the flesh. Finally, three days later, she printed a picture of herself, a selfie in front of the magnolias blooming by the library, her fiercest look on her face, graduation cap in her hand. She wrote one word, on the back, and sent it, kissing the envelope as if it would make it travel faster.

In the meantime, she finished classes, hung out with friends, and went on with her life, trying to live enough for both of them.

It was ungodly hot for Boston in May and Detective Wheeler shifted in the shitty folding chairs the university had rented for graduation. He was nothing but grateful to be here and so happy for his ambitious daughter, graduating Summa Cum Laude from her dream school. He was just so proud and had told her as much at breakfast this morning, with her and her roommate and some friends, all celebrating their achievements and simultaneously scared of what was ahead. He was just ecstatic that they all made it this far, intact and whole, willing to take nothing for granted.

He remembered being terrified, after the months senior year when she was lost to him, terrified she was gone, terrified he had failed her, his wife, himself. He still remembered the relief when he opened the door that morning and she was there, two kids in tow, asking for help from a horror they never should have been involved in. Who would have thought the crew he was supposed to be hunting was more Lost Boys than Mafia? And who would have thought they would have been influential in bringing down an actual, organized crime unit in the LAPD?

After, his prodigal daughter had returned, and then gone to school, and things had generally returned to normal. She studied hard, came back for breaks, and confided in him, every detail of college. The all-night studying sessions, the boys who seemingly had their eye on her, even a few snippets about the parties she attended. There was only one thing she didn’t share with him, one thing too personal, too close for her to divulge to her old man. He saw the letters, sometimes, and ached to read them, but he trusted her. Giving her this space was important to him, a way of redeeming himself for watching too closely for years. She had earned her freedom.

And that freedom brought him here, to graduation, from one of the best universities on the East Coast, sitting in the heat and fiddling with a program. Riya would have come but her graduation was the same day so he was here, alone, bringing best wishes from LA.

Well, almost alone. A shadow fell over him, a soft clearing of a throat and, when he looked up, he dropped the leaflet, turning back to watch it sway to the ground.

“Is this seat taken?”

He stood, eye to eye with the boy, no, the man, next to him. He hadn’t seen him in four years and stared; his shoulders had broadened, visible in the short-sleeved dress shirt, eyes still intense, jawline and cheekbones seemingly sharper with age. The last time he had seen Colt Kaneko, he was broken, mourning a father he barely knew and a life he never would live. Now, he seemed more at ease, as if time didn’t erase all wounds, but made them easier to deal with. He still looked like he would never truly relax but that he was, for now, at peace.

Colt extended his hand and he shook it, then gestured to the chair. “Sit down.” He picked up the brochure, watching Colt settle in, putting a bouquet of flowers under his chair. “I didn’t know you were coming.”

A small smile. “Yeah, Ellie doesn’t know either. I don’t know if she’s going to hit me or hug me.”

Wheeler grinned; he knew his daughter better than that. “My money’s on neither.”

Ellie couldn’t stop laughing and smiling and celebrating. She felt alive. After the ceremony, she desperately ripped off her gown, sweltering in the heat. She couldn’t stop handing out hugs, to professors, friends, her roommate. The crowd was crushing, families and loved ones, all fighting to get to the graduates; she couldn’t find her dad. She knew he was here, somewhere, but the mass of people made it hard to see six feet in front of her.

Finally, it was like the crowds parted and there he was. She dashed, sprinting towards him, laughing and wrapping him up in a hug. They were flying back to LA in a few days, once things calmed down and she was packed, but she wanted to see him now, in the midst of one of the biggest celebrations of her life. She pulled back, looking at the joy in his face and laughed.

“Love you dad!”

He kissed her cheek. “Congratulations. I am so proud of you.”

She went to smile at him again when she saw something, someone, over his shoulder and froze with a gasp. He dad smiled and stepped aside and there, alive and whole and in the flesh, Colt stood, clutching a bouquet and looking painfully out of place. She stared at him, time stopping, the crowd a dull roar around her as they stared at each other.

She took a step, then another, and was soon running, leaping into his arms, her lips finding his, the flowers falling as he clung to her, desperately. It was all she could do to hold on as he kissed her like he was drowning, four years of missing each other communicated through touch.

Finally, he pulled back, stars in his eyes as he looked at her. “I love you, Ellie.”

“Always.”

"What is graphic designing?" This question does not have a simple or detailed answer. And in this essay, I am trying to answer this question and give you my take on it from my research and understanding.

Graphic designing is a combination of two words "Graphic" and "Design". Graphics infers visuals, images, art, lettering, expressions nearly all the visual elements and design is to decide upon the look and function of something before it is made. 'Design' it involves thinking, problem-solving and practicality and principles of design. When we combine visual elements & principles of design together we form graphic design, to communicate a message of emotions or motto.

The most familiar example of this can be 'memes', most of us are regular to social media and come across various memes. We see them, we relate to them and we laugh on how messed up our lives are or on the things which we thought we only do but you see a meme on it and relate to that thinking that I am not the only weird person in this realm. So basically what I am trying to explain is, that you somehow relate to that post with graphics and typographies with no audio but you understand the emotion behind it and that is what graphic designing is about. Creating art to illustrate your thoughts to society or to solve a problem through it or to create awareness. I wanted to add some meme examples but it might get offensive so i would advice you to go and look by yourself.

1. Multimedia Designer: A multimedia designer uses art and design skills to create videos, audios and animated images. They are responsible for designing props, sets and costumes, directing set assistants on design interpretations.

2. Web Designer: A web designer creates layouts and graphics for web pages and this person decides what content is included in a web page.

3. Logo Designer: A logo is more than just a graphic symbol; it is a brand identity image of a company or a product.

4. Brand Identity Designer: BID is more intricate than logo creation. A company's brand identity includes materials such as business cards, stationery, media advertising, promotions etc.

5. Flash Designer: Flash is a tool for creating interactive and animated websites using vector and raster graphics which enable the graphics to be scaled to any size without losing clarity or quality.

6. Art Director: These are in charge of a creative team that produces artwork to be displayed on television, billboards, the internet or in magazines. They work hand in hand with marketing.

7. Photo Editor: Or say photoshop. Photo editing softwares allows users to take digital photographs and manipulate, crop, colour-correct them.

8. Layout Artist: This artist designs the structure and layout images and text in a pleasing format for printed media.

Designers like Akshar Pathak, who is an art director in zomato. He completed his graduation from National Institute of Fashion Technology. And personally, I am a huge fan of his work. In his building age, he has given many TED talks and one of his TED talks he talked about good designs and bad designs to which i related and that helped me in learning new things and correcting my basic understanding.

Let's start with bad design, in that video, he gave an example of the IRCTC website. He said when he went to book tickets on that website there was some display showing "300 off / 400 off / 600 off" and he didn't know what it was so he clicked on it and found out that it was an online shopping link from where you can buy clothes, so if you are not getting your tickets done you can buy clothes only at 599. So this was totally unnecessary and creating confusion among users.

Real Estate Marketing in a Luxury Market

Because real estate market in the U. S. slowly continues to regain the footing, many agents are looking at this time as a chance to redefine their market. With so many agents abandoning-or at least tremendously cutting back-their marketing systems to save money, others will be jumping in to take advantage of the marketing void. In other words, they are bringing an offensive approach in order to put themselves in primary position when the market starts to upswing. There are many things you need to know prior to make the quantum leap into the next price range. We put together a list of five factors that will help you decide if a move to luxury real estate is right for you. #1. Know What You may be Getting Into Agents often make a blind leap into deluxe real estate because they think that's "where the money is. " Of course, it's simple math. If you get the same break, it pays to list homes with higher prices. In theory, you can make more money by doing fewer transactions. Similarly, that's true, but if you go into luxury real estate using this mentality, you are probably destined to fail. Yes, your wages per transaction goes up significantly. That's great, but there may be often a new set of challenges introduced when working an important high-end market: the competitive stakes are much higher, friendly circles are much more closed, politics are different, and there are a lot other factors which I will detail throughout this article. Additionally , marketing and servicing costs are generally more when going through luxury homes and clients. Both buyers and owners expect more and demand more and the properties his or her self need even more attention (marketing, staging, photography, etc . ) to appeal to a more sophisticated crowd. It needs to look sharp and feel remarkable at the very first glance (exceptional photography, nice glossy paper, advanced writing, clean design). It needs to reflect your individuality, but also relate to the luxury market you are targeting. In a way, you may be a representative of this lifestyle and your marketing should put across that. It shows your unique expertise and highlights the actual service/knowledge benefits that make you a specialist in this distinctive industry. It's very important that you don't skimp here or it will reveal. You simply can't fake high-end quality. You must be devoted to investing the money to do the marketing right or individuals will see through it. Put simply, the brochure and all your other marketing materials need to be of the utmost quality. This includes your own home advertising. You should at least have a tabloid-size glossy flyer/brochure that you choose to use to promote each property. The staging must be amazing. The photography must be very professional. Of course, you should maintain ones property marketing pieces branded clearly with your personal image (logo, colors, fonts, etc . ) so you don't lose the identity. "My brochure is quality and people associate any piece with its sender, " Carol Barkin says. "I send it out prior to meeting someone to warm individuals up. Comic City Spark 12 #4 - using your brochure and event etiquette

Ok - this is the final post I’m going to write on CCS12, and I want to talk about how to get the most out of your brochure and how to have the most fun possible (i.e. avoid ruining other peoples’ days) at the event. If you missed the rest of this series you can find part #1, part #2 and part #3 here.

First, let’s talk about how to use your brochure to plan your day. Remember in Part #2 when I talked about one of the circles I planned to visit? The info that I wrote down from their Twitter page during my online prep was:

Next up, find your circle. I wanted to visit NEGRO MANIA who was due to be at table 30b. Here they are. Although it doesn’t specifically say “a” or “b”, you can see there are 2 entries with the number “30″ - as you can guess, since NEGRO MANIA is the second of the two, they will be at side b (right side) of the table.

Next, to find them on the map. The brochure maps are the only ones printed on pink paper, and they’re perforated so you can rip them out. Here’s the シ row.

And that’s where table 30 is! It’s right at the back of the room, and way over on the far side from where we came in between halls 7 & 8 (that’s where the queue was). Draw a circle around it so you can find it easily later. Rinse and repeat for any other circles you’re interested in, and then rip out the map for easy reference on the move.

Now, you may be wondering why we’ve spent all this time checking the circle’s information in the brochure when we’ve already got the details written down from their Pixiv / Twitter as outlined in part #2. Good question. Honestly, it’s not essential for you to go through the rigmarole of looking them up in the circle list each time - you can skip straight to the map to mark them if you’re confident enough in your note-taking and cross-referencing. Me, I personally liked sense-checking my research against the image/name of the circle in the list, just so I know for sure I’m headed for the right place. Plus I had a couple of hours to kill in the queue so...

As I previously mentioned, halls 1-3 are all in the same massive room and there are no physical dividers separating them. Here’s a map of TBS to give you a better idea:

(You can see here how far apart the East and West wings are. It takes maybe 10 mins to walk between them on that zig-zaggy raised walkway in the middle).

On the map, 東3, 東2 and 東1 look like 3 separate rooms next to each other. They aren’t. They are 1 big, big room. Keep an eye out for signs high up on the walls showing you roughly where each “hall” begins and ends.

How to find your circle in the hall (assuming you’ve been good and highlighted them on your map):

Check which part of the hall you’re in. There are massive numbered signs high up on the wall showing which part of the hall you’re in - check this against your map.

Check the row number. The first table in the row (whichever end you approach from) has an A4 sign stuck to the edge of it showing which row it is. You may need to peek through participants to see it. Note that there can be a single table stuck on the end of each row - this table may not have the sign, so if you can’t see it check the next one along. Your map will show the order the rows come in so you know how far you have to go.

Check the table number. This will be on a small sign on the edge of every table, so again you may have to peer through people to find it. Many circles also have a pop-up banner behind the table with their artwork and name on it, which is handy. If there is a massive queue in front of the table you think you want, check and see if they have a queue marker (scroll down for more about these).

Now for the last leg of this post series - event etiquette. There’s a bunch of stuff that I realised as I was going along that I wish I had known before I went, and although no-one was mean about it I felt bad not knowing what I should be doing - so I really do recommend spending a bit of time learning how to work best with your fellow participants to get the most out of your day.

Probably the best thing you can do is to read Akaboo’s site (translate it using Google or something) before you go to learn about what is and isn’t acceptable. If you find yourself in the queue having forgotten to do this, there’s a pretty simple comic in the brochure which explains how you should behave. It’s pretty obvious stuff; in a nutshell, being a nuisance (including distracting the circles/doujinkas, asking them to sign things, getting in the way/blocking access, not having small value notes/coins etc) is not cool. Neither is running or pushing/line-cutting, buying R18 doujins when underage (”young people” - I guess as in children/highschoolers - are not allowed in the event, period), any photography outside of the cosplay room, bringing large / bulky luggage or bags, and bringing pets.

On the topic of cosplay; it can be tempting to want to come along dressed up as your favourite character. Be aware that some events do not allow cosplay because it disrupts the flow of the event - think people with big props blocking the narrow space between rows of tables and you get the idea. Check on Akaboo’s site that cosplay is permitted before dressing up, and that there are no other rules to follow. Also, anything that’s going to make you uncomfortable during the queue or walking around the halls (heels etc), or fill up your hands, just isn’t worth it. There is a cloakroom where you can stash your stuff (and presumably change), but I have no experience of that so I can’t really tell you anymore.

Let me talk a little bit about queuing - I know, I know, sounds boring, right? Bear with me as this is actually pretty cool!

Many of the smaller circles don’t have much of a queue (or at least, they didn’t when I turned up at opening time), so you can immediately buy the books you want. Just check first to make sure you’re not accidentally queue-jumping - making eye contact with the doujinka is usually a good way to tell!

More popular circles though (you can usually tell as they will be on the outsides of the room rather than in the long rows, to make space for queuing customers) will often have a queuing route marked out on the floor. It will be cleverly designed to create spaces for people to get past without going through the queue. Arrows show you which direction the queue should go in; a straight line shows where to stop to create a through-fare gap. A long queue may be divided into several blocks along a designated route. Also, they will have a queue marker - aka a small, handheld sign showing where the back of the queue is. You can see it in the picture below:

See the girl at the back holding the “ あ-18″ sign? That’s the queue marker. It’s held by the last person in the queue, and they have to display it so people can see where to join the line (or where other people in separate blocks of the same queue need to go next). When someone else joins the queue they take it off the original person, and so on - in other words, the marker is always right at the back. As it can be hard to tell which queue is for which table (particularly if two circles are sharing and the lines are long), this is a neat concept. If a queue is particularly long and divided up into different blocks there will be more than one queue marker, so you can tell which queues are part of yours and which aren’t.

If you join a queue in which someone is holding the marker: politely get the attention of the person holding it (”sumimasen?”), hold out your hand for the sign, and then hold it up above your head (making sure it’s facing the right way so people can read it!). Chances are you won’t have it long! Make sure you say thank you (”arigatougozaimasu”) when someone takes it off you - good manners cost nothing, after all.

Finally, in places where there is a long queue you will usually line up in pairs, so make sure you don’t disrupt the structure of the line by creating a single-file line - other participants may be reluctant to appear to be pushing in front of you by filling in the gaps, and it will cause an uncomfortable situation. All I did was follow the lead of everyone around me and it was a breeze.

So, how did I find the event? I loved every second of it. The order, the efficiency of how it all worked…I got in just after the 10am opening time (the huge queue flowed in in a matter of minutes) and left just before 11.30am with every book on my list. Seriously, I couldn’t have been happier. The process of pointing out the books/quantities I wanted, handing over the cash (all the books have a price label clearly visible so you can add it all up as you’re waiting, and most are around 400-500JPY each), sliding them into my trusty tote and then scurrying to the next table…it was all so seamless and speedy. If you’re the kind of person that likes to browse more leisurely at relaxed pace I kind of suspect that you’re going to enjoy yourself quite as much, as those local doujin fans know what they want and there’s no messing around. The beauty of an event like this is that you can plan ahead and get in and out with minimum of stress - window-shopping doesn’t really fit into that concept. That being said, there’s no reason why you can’t do it - just be aware of other participants who might be on a personal mission to buy a stack of doujins and who won’t appreciate your getting in the way for no good reason.

The longest queues I stood in were for LEGO! and Abaraya - even those were no more than 10-15 minutes each. I think I must have been lucky as there were some circles with queues that must have been 20+ minutes long…but even so it wasn’t even a fraction of the pain I thought I would have to endure.

(Incidentally, the latest LEGO! book is absolutely magnificent - the closest a doujin has ever brought me to tears. Buy it. Buy it now.)

The beauty of attending the event is that you can meet your doujin heroines - plus you can pick up exclusive free “papers”, freebies like badges and postcards, and non-consigned books. See that white doujin with Present Mic on the right (”Closet”)? That’s not going to be sold at stores. Go me!

Would I do it again? Hell yes. Whether or not I would brave the half-million attendees of an event like Comiket is another question, but I would certainly do CCS again in a heartbeat.

How to write your first blog or thought leadership content

One of the big buzz terms right now is ‘content marketing’. If you want people to engage with your business via your website or your social media platforms, then it pays to write great content. LinkedIn itself is one of the world’s largest publishing platforms where absolutely any of its 500million+ members can publish their content directly onto it. So that’s all very easy, you just write some content and publish it right? For many perhaps not.

If the thought of writing leaves you either nervous, scared or running for the hills, take a deep breath, calm down and let’s see if we can find some ways of helping you over that hurdle. Articles only need to be around 500-800 words. Somewhere in the middle is ideal as if they are too short it is hard for Google, or LinkedIn and their mythical and ever-changing algorithms to find it and index it. (If you find your mojo up to 1,500 is perfectly fine too.) Now 500 words may seem a lot, however, if you break it down it isn’t that hard. So, let’s try and work through some practical steps to help you get your first article published.

Step 1 – Do not make it just an advert.

I’ve seen some pretty horrific posts and articles. They’ve had great titles and then I’ve clicked. Let me give you an example. The title was something like “Simple tips to help protect your small business from a Cyber-attack.” Sounded really helpful. When I went to this LinkedIn post it said, in the first 3 sentences something like” Cyber criminals are after your and your customer’s data, you are at risk and defenceless. To protect your business, you need our services and products. Click here to download our brochure” Big Picture of their company logo beneath it to boot. I didn’t click, I clicked off and went somewhere else for the info. Please don’t do this.

Step 2 – Get a topic.

Try to think about your area of expertise and what issues or problems people may be facing in that area. What advice or help can you give them in a blog that will help them face these challenges? To give you some examples, firstly, in the B2C world, if you sell secondary glazing, then it is likely that your target audience is interested in having warmer drier homes. So, write an article that gives people practical advice on how to do this over and above secondary glazing. For a B2B example, if you’re providing business accountancy services then write an article outlining the 5 or 6 simple steps any business owner can take to help keep their records up to date.

If you’re still struggling try Quora. It’s a great site, which is free to use, where people are posing questions they need help with. Using this can give you an idea what your target audience is concerned about so you can tailor your content to them.

Step 3 – Pick a title.

The old saying goes, you should never judge a book by it’s cover. However, Google certainly judges your blog by it’s title. Some of the cleverest titles may be mysterious and cool but the poor old search engines just can’t work out what it is and how to categorise it. A simple tip is that people are looking for help with their day to day tasks and operations, which is why headings like “X habits of successful people…” do very well.

There is a raft of sites which are designed to help you with picking SEO friendly blog titles. We like and use this one from Hubspot and this one called Title Generator.

Step 4 – Have a clear introduction

For many first-time writers, starting is the hardest part. So let’s break it down piece by piece to try and help you.

i. Talk about the main issue or problem you’re helping with. Keep this high level, so sentences like, “many people in the tech sector are faced with the challenge of..” You can bring in recent examples from the media if there are any, or even use Google to help you find stats to back up your case. (If you’re using stats then it pays to credit where they came from with a simple link.)

ii. Then give a couple of sentences around why people are finding this issue hard, and maybe show some empathy or understanding that it is a difficult problem.

iii. This is the important part: Make it clear to the reader what they will get from reading on. i.e. What advice or tips there are in the next 400-500 words or so. (Breathe easy, you’ve probably written the 1st 100 words in your introduction, so you’re doing well!)

Step 5 – Using bullet point or numbering

I’ve used 5 steps here, it is a simple and straightforward way of giving your article or blog some clear structure. Each bullet point should have a header; either write the header in bold or underline it to help it stand out. It gives clarity and the reader feels comfortable as they know what is coming next.

If you have 5 bullet point each say 80-100 words, then you’ve written at the very least the next 400 words. Which means you’ll have written approximately 500 words now so you’re done.

Within your bullet points, if one of your points links to one of your web-pages or one of your landing pages, then it’s okay to have that link for further information. But keep it as a nice to read, not a sales pitch. Sales pitches drive readers away.

Step 6 – Check the Grammar

It’s a good idea to write it in Microsoft’s Word as that will pick up a lot of typos and some grammatical mistakes. I would also recommend installing Grammarly, it is a great free resource that helps pick up on grammatical errors. To help make your blog more readable you can also use the free version of the Hemingway App. Finally, you can also use the oldest non-tech solution of all, ask a friend or colleague to proof read it for you. They can pick up on mistakes and also suggest improvements.

Step 7 – Close it out, what’s the main takeaway?

A short paragraph is all you need now. Just summarize the main points from the article, and leave the reader with one key point that they can action. In short, what is the one key piece of advice that your article gives?

Step 8 – Have a sign-off

Great for LinkedIn and other publishing platforms. Have an author’s bio of 2-3 lines, no more. Have a sentence or two encouraging sharing or commenting on your article. There is nothing better than your potential customers engaging in conversation with you online. Then if you have a service or product linked to your article, by all means at the end have a Call to Action (CTA). A simple line like “If you’d like help with…or want to know more about…then click here”.

Congratulations! You did it.

Trump-Kim summit: The sorry fate of North Korea's diplomat defectors

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is about to attend his second summit with US President Donald Trump. But as the North inches its way out of near-total isolation and tentatively engages with the world, the question of what to do about high-profile North Korean diplomatic defectors becomes that much thornier.

It can’t be easy. Deciding to defect from North Korea can put your life and those you love in danger. For Pyongyang’s diplomats, who have enjoyed a life of prestige and power, the danger in defecting is that much more real.

These men and women are the Juche ideology foreign front line.

Their main role is to raise capital for the regime, but although they are the elite in their home country, they are unlikely to receive such a privileged position anywhere else. Ambassadors and their staff are told to promote Pyongyang’s point of view around the world, and will often seek out pro-North Korean groups in their respective countries. They also monitor local news, screening TV networks and newspapers for any mention of the Kim family.

The latest development comes from Italy, where the government has expressed concern about the fate of the school-age daughter of Jo Song-gil, the North Korean ambassador to Italy who fled his home in Rome last year. Another high-profile diplomatic defector, Thae Yong-ho, had told reporters he understood she was forcefully repatriated back to Pyongyang.

The ultimate traitors

It’s almost impossible to verify such claims but it does set out just how high the stakes are, particularly for defectors who come from an elite so privileged they are trusted enough to represent the country abroad.

The higher your prestige, the higher the risk in leaving. Such a move is unlikely to be forgiven by the Kim regime – some elite defectors say they discovered that their families back in North Korea were punished, sent to prison or, in some cases, they believe members of their families were shot.

They are global ambassadors for the Kim family, the figures who hold up the interests of the dynasty, in the face of an often hostile world. So it stands to reason – by Pyongyang logic – that dissent while working as a diplomat cannot be tolerated or even be seen to be tolerated.

North Korea views diplomatic defectors as the ultimate traitors – because the humiliation is that much starker for the Kims. And yet it happens.

Han Jin Myung was a second secretary in Vietnam and told NK News that he defected after failing to share with ministry officials the money he made from selling some items. He said diplomats were not paid well, and he received around $400 (£348) a month. His seniors reported him to Pyongyang and he felt he was in danger. He said he was certain he would be severely punished and quickly made the decision to leave.

‘South Korea must embrace North Koreans’

Diplomats who spend time abroad have been allowed to see how other countries live and work. They have gained a taste of another life; their children may have spent time at international schools. This glimpse of freedom may give them a taste for more.

Despite the latest claims about the fate of his daughter, information is still scarce about the 48-year-old Jo Song-gil and his family. They were last seen in late November and are thought to be seeking asylum in a third country – some believe he’s on his way to the United States. The details of this case remain murky and we may yet find out more about what has really happened.

But these high-profile defectors also raise something of a dilemma for South Korea, particularly at a time it is forging a cautious camaraderie with the North.

Here in South Korea, such defectors have historically been given protection and for good reason. Yi Han-yong, a nephew of Kim Jong-un’s half-brother, was shot dead outside his home in a suburb of Seoul in 1997 after publishing a book about the Kim regime. His attackers were never caught.

The former deputy ambassador to London, Thae Yong-ho, who defected in 2016, told reporters that he felt the South Korean government should be more proactive – but he no longer believed Mr Jo should seek shelter in the South.

“South Korea needs to show that it is willing to embrace North Koreans,” he said in a press conference.

“But the current situation doesn’t seem to do that. Neither the South Korean government nor its citizens express their intention to rescue Jo and his family after their defection, and I’m saddened by the current situation.”

Defectors from North to South Korea

“We need to tell North Korean citizens that the Republic of Korea is their motherland. And Korea would welcome any North Korean citizens who would want to come to this country.”

But the warmth of the welcome in the South is not guaranteed. Conservative governments have often used defectors to tarnish the North’s image and highlight its human rights abuses.

But in contrast, the liberal President Moon Jae-in is pursuing a policy of engaging with the North and his administration may be wondering what line to take.

The South has long held the ideal that all Koreans are entitled to political and economic freedom. But the North often accuses Seoul of orchestrating these defections to undermine and embarrass them. This is not the kind of argument Mr Moon’s government wants to have right now.

What jobs did defectors have before leaving?

Those who left between 1998-2018

Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry does not hide its outrage and disgust at those who speak out, such as Thae Yong-ho.

Although not specifically naming him, they described him as “human scum” and were critical of the South Korean government for allowing him to speak at the National Assembly.

We asked Seoul’s Ministry of Unification and the Foreign Ministry about concerns that North Koreans were not being embraced.

The Ministry of Unification spokesperson was very careful about the wording of the statement and said its position was that it “will accept all North Korean defectors who wish to come to the South of their own free will”.

Seoul does provide material assistance to North Korean refugees. There are now nearly 32,000 who have made the perilous journey to South Korea. They are aided in their new lives, offered a place to live and and education.

But the Ministry of Unification seems to be concerned about how defectors’ actions are perceived in the North.

Last year, just days after the first meeting between President Moon and Kim Jong-un, one politically active defector was preparing to launch balloons into the North with brochures and flash drives. He has done this for 15 years. But he said he received a call asking him not to.

When the group decided to go ahead with the balloon launch, they were surrounded by police.

Kim Myong Song, a North Korean defector who is a journalist for one of South Korea’s biggest daily newspapers, the Chosun Ilbo, was barred from covering an event at the truce village of Panmunjom. It has been his job since 2013 to cover North-South affairs, but the Unification Ministry said it had to take “necessary steps” because of the “special circumstance” of this meeting.

“It hurts me,” he told the BBC.

“Defectors are South Korean citizens. We left an oppressive dictatorship and came to South Korea, placing all our trust on the democratic South Korean government. However, this government decided to exclude a defector journalist even when the North Korean government did not make a request.

“It makes me feel vulnerable and fear that South Korean government may disown us if it is necessary and they will not come to protect us.”

Potential mine of information

And yet there are benefits to welcoming North Korean defectors, particularly those that come with links to the rulers of the country.

Kim Jeong-bong, the former chief director of Seoul’s Institute for National Security and Strategy, told us that right now, Jo Song-gil would be a mine of information.

“We can learn from Jo about the explanation North Korea has given for its recent diplomatic strategy and what kind of orders it has given to elite diplomats in regards to the last three South-North summits, and the US-North summit,” he said.

“It is possible that Kim Jong-un told his diplomats that he is trying to work with South Korea to gain economic support, or he may have said that he will never give up nuclear weapons even if he is are engaging with US.

“Especially with Jo. His father and father-in-law were both high level diplomats. His father-in-law was a foreign ministry ceremonial secretary, which means he was sitting next to Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il when they were meeting international leaders. It is possible if Jo comes to South Korea, we can fit the pieces of the puzzle together and fill in the gaps of 70 years of North Korean diplomatic history.”

Mr Kim believes Mr Jo has gone to the United States and we are unlikely to hear more about his case for some time while Washington and Seoul are in talks with Pyongyang.

“It is very possible that US won’t make any statement about it. When Chang Sung Gil, the Egypt ambassador, and his brother Chang Sung Ho, at the North Korean trade mission in France, went to the US, it kept its silence.

“It is highly likely Jo’s case becomes like that.”

With a second summit between the North and the US just days away, many will consider that a prudent approach.

Way #1 to Use Blending Cards: Match and Identify Letters

Let’s start with the basics. My four year old has started to learn his letters and letter sounds. A great first step for using blending cards is just to allow the child to match up the letters with magnetic letters, letter tiles, etc. This will help the child correlate letters to sounds and sounds to words. It’s a pretty simple start to the complicated process of reading.

Way #3 to Use Blending Cards: Blend and Identify Sounds

Once students can hear the different sounds on their own of a word, they can then start to identify letters and sounds. I like to start this process with providing the letter and identifying the sound. For this activity, I use an envelope to cover the picture. This way students aren’t focusing on the image or trying to say the word slowly (segmenting). I want students to only focus on providing a sound for each letter that they see. **TIP: I love to use a voice recording feature on the iPad for this activity or whisper phones. When students “hear” what they are saying and focus on the sounds that they are making, they will start to “hear” how these sounds form words.

Way #4 to Use Blending Cards: Segment and Identify Letters

It’s time to step it UP! Now that your students can identify letters, identify sounds, segment words, they can connect the three skills together. For this activity, students segment the picture and find letters to spell their word. I use magnetic letters or letter tiles for this activity. The reverse side of my cards has the letters so students can self-assess their work. I always allow this so students don’t become frustrated.
