Mie Hama and Akira Takarada in Ironfinger (Jun Fukuda, 1965) Cast: Akira Takarada, Mie Hama, Ichiro Arishima, Jun Tatara, Akihiko Hirata, Sachio Sakai, Susumo Kurobe, Toru Ibuki, Chotaro Togin, Naoya Kusakawa, Koji Iwamoto, Mike Daneen. Screenplay: Michio Tsuzuki, Kihachi Okamoto. Cinematography: Shinsaku Uno. Production design: Kazuo Ogawa. Film editing: Ryohei Fujii, Yoshitami Kuroiwa. Music: Masaru Sato. Ironfinger is a wacky and somewhat cheesy Japanese entry into the subgenre of James Bond spoofs that swept through movies internationally in the 1960s, attracting not only American and British filmmakers but also Frenchmen like Philippe de Broca (That Man From Rio, 1964) and even Jean-Luc Godard (Alphaville, 1965). Which may be why the pseudo-Bond of Ironfinger is part French. He calls himself Andrew Hoshino -- though it's not exactly clear that that's his name -- and is played a little more broadly than is necessary by Akira Takarada, a veteran not only of films by Yasujiro Ozu (The End of Summer, 1961) and Mikio Naruse (A Woman's Life, 1963) but also of numerous Godzilla movies, starting with Ishiro Honda's original Gojira in 1954. His leading lady, Mie Hama, made her own appearance in the real James Bond series in You Only Live Twice (Lewis Gilbert, 1967), playing Kissy Suzuki to Sean Connery's Bond. Ironfinger isn't unwatchable: There are some good gags, but also some bad ones. The climactic action sequence, in which the good guys foil the bad guys by tossing lighted matches into oil drums, which then explode into an impossible cascade of drums coming from every corner, is flat-out ridiculous. Still, if you can put up with some tacky pop songs and a needlessly complicated plot, Ironfinger is a tolerably amusing period artifact and only 93 minutes long.

166 hours played. Finally at the end of Act 2.
Biggest letdown of the game so far: learning that this armor cannot be looted from Ironfinger's corpse. 😤
(Yes I know there's mods, I want to do my first run completely vanilla though)
Sorta-kinda spoilers / ramblings about the game under the cut
Gale, Wyll and my Tav now all have powerful summons that render the actual characters borderline useless in comparison. Meanwhile Astarion's just looking pretty, shooting arrows at gods.
I also have a brain for a pet. It deals more damage than I do.
Tumblr media
Wyll's just chilling with his summoned cambion at his tent, waiting for everyone to go to sleep. Good on him.
Dame Aylin and Isobel are casually hanging in my camp.
Shadowheart's having a mental breakdown.
Karlach just nearly exploded. Same with Gale.
Halsin just announced that he wants my Tav with Astarion standing right behind her. Teehee.
Jaheira's... there. Now I have to figure out gear for her as well. Fuck.
Lae'zel is a perfect pinnacle of stability, per usual.
It all went from "okay, Act 2 is a bit slow" to a rollercoaster on fire rather quickly.
Boy oh boy, I hope clown facepainting at the circus is coming up soon.

Bandages and Scarves
@fallenlondonficswap @half-life-citizen I hope you like this! I wrote it for the group exchange :)
general, no romance, tomb colonies, clothes colony, dialogue heavy
The shoreline of Venderbight is dark, save for one tiny red spark that only becomes clear once the boat has already run aground. The shape huddled near the prow straightens up, a rippling movement of waving scarves and tattered sleeves. It steps onto the shore, turns to face the boat, and something unspoken passes between the two of them. The boat slips away into the dark waters of the zee, leaving the shape standing alone.
The red spark approaches, revealing itself to be the lit end of a cigarette in the mouth of a bandaged man. Tomb-colonists really shouldn’t smoke, but this one is unscathed so far. Not so much as a single singed thread mars his bandages, and when he exhales a plume of smoke, he does so without the wheeze of many older tomb-colonists.
“I’d offer you one,” the tomb-colonist says to the figure on the shore, “but there’s no one under those clothes, is there?”
The clothes-colony (for that is, of course, what it is) turns its eyeless gaze upon the tomb-colonist and tilts its cloth head in a silent question.
“No.” The tomb-colonist takes a long drag on his cigarette. “I won’t have you sent back to Polythreme. It would be hypocritical, if nothing else.”
“Do you live here?” The hat is the one to speak, its voice raspy and pained, like someone with a sore throat. It is out of practice; the escape from Polythreme required silence and secrecy, as did the long journey to Venderbight.
“Some of the time.” The tomb-colonist flicks ash onto the ground. When he doesn’t seem inclined to elaborate, a glove prods his arm, and he sighs. “I work in London. I only come here when I’m desperate to get away from the city, which isn’t often. This place is dreadful.”
The coat slumps dejectedly. “We were told this was the best place for us to go.”
The tomb-colonist looks the clothes-colony up and down, and nods. “It probably is,” he says. “Trade the scarves for bandages, and you could pass as one of us.”
“Trade our scarves?” the hat exclaims indignantly. “Our lovely, loyal scarves?”
“Oh, all right. Keep your scarves. But if you want to hide out here, you’ll need bandages.”
“Will you help us?” It’s the gloves that ask this time, both speaking as one. They are bolder than the other clothes, but there is a vulnerability in the request all the same. The clothes-colony’s nature means it is never alone, but it has been a long time since it accepted help from outsiders.
The tomb-colonist blows smoke at where the clothes-colony’s face would be, and it yelps like a startled dog. “No,” he says. “I can’t tell you that the infirmary is only a few minutes’ walk from here, and that if you follow the signposts down Ironfinger Street, you can’t miss it. And I definitely don’t know that if you open the window in the back of the building, you can climb through and take whatever you need.”
The clothes-colony tilts its head again, thinking. “Sarcasm,” the gloves say at last. “We have not heard much of it in Polythreme.” A pause. “But why can you not come with us?”
The tomb-colonist laughs bitterly. “Londoners get sent here when they become too scandalous for the city. Sometimes I cause too much trouble for even this place. I leave for Gaider’s Mourn in two hours.”
“We have heard of the Mourn,” the gloves say eagerly. “What is it like? The corsairs’ ships always have so many exciting stories.”
“Don’t know. Never been,” the tomb-colonist replies with a shrug.
“Oh.” The gloves ponder this for a moment. “Will you be happy there?”
“Does it matter?”
“Of course,” the hat says. “Why do you think we left our home? We will be happier in Venderbight, even if you are not.”
“I’ve been to Polythreme,” the tomb-colonists remarks. “So much screaming. I imagine anywhere would be an improvement.”
“Maybe. But we chose Venderbight. And you chose Gaider’s Mourn.” The coat makes a thoughtful humming noise. “In Polythreme, what the king wishes to occur, occurs. Out here, only we decide what happens to us. So, you should go somewhere that you will enjoy, not hate.”
The tomb-colonist’s dry lips are already forming a scathing condemnation of the coat’s naïveté, but he stops himself. “Perhaps you’re right,” he concedes. “I can’t say if I’ll like the Mourn just yet. But I hope I will.”
“We hope so too.” A glove extends itself to shake his hand. “Goodbye, and thank you. We will get ourselves some bandages, and you will have a safe journey.”
As the clothes-colony walks away, somewhat unsteadily, the tomb-colonist smiles beneath his bandages. Venderbight is not home, and never has been. But perhaps the Mourn could be.

Monster movies, especially giant monster movies, are the first magic! And after 51 years, the best magic! You can keep your cgi overkill, I will gladly stick with the old school! But it was not just giant monsters, it was the wonderful group of actors that were in a lot of these great Kaiju epics that are the currency of youth and have become the escapist comfort of adulthood! Earlier this year we lost Akira Takarada, a mainstay of the Showa Era! I had commented that the world seemed a little darker! Childhood heroes essential and no doubt he was a mainstay in the Gojira films and also a joy to watch in the Ironfinger films as well! And many other films! April 29th is a popular day for birthdays, and let’s not get started on May, all my heroes were born in May! I have a soft spot for Taurus! Not a surprise, Dad’s birthday is May 13th, and he the greatest of all heroes. And when Dad and earlier when Buttons died, it became very important to honor the dead on their birthdays! Actually, it’s vital for me to do this. As Bones says in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: “He’s not really dead. As long as we remember him!”l
Yes, everything goes back to Wrath of Khan! The last 25 minutes of Wrath of Khan mean a totally different thing to me now. It’s hauntingly powerful! To me it is vital to remember those no longer with us!
So please join me in wishing a very happy birthday in the afterlife to Akira Takarada! Thank you for giving us so much to enjoy!

Akira Takarada in Golden Eyes (Jun Fukuda, 1968) Cast: Akira Takarada, Beverly Maeda, Tomomi Sawa, Makoto Sato, Andrew Hughes, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Nadao Kirino, Sachio Sakai, Toru Ibuku, Seishiro Kuno, Mari Sakurai. Screenplay: Jun Fukuda, Ei Ogawa, Michio Tsuzuki. Cinematography: Kazuo Yamada. Production design: Shigekazu Ikuno. Film editing: Ryohei Fujii. Music: Masaru Sato. Golden Eyes -- not to be confused with the real James Bond pic GoldenEye (Martin Campbell, 1995) -- is a followup to Jun Fukada's 1965 Bond spoof Ironfinger. It's just as goofy but a little more slickly made than the first film. It also stars Akira Takarada as the Franco-Japanese spy Andrew Hoshino, who may or may not be an Interpol agent, and who seems to be devoted to his mother -- although this time he gets called on that when someone suggests that "Mom" is a code word or even an acronym for some mysterious agency. The action moves from Beirut to Japan and involves some jaw-droppingly improbable setups like a man impaled on a hook dangling from a helicopter, a group of assassins dressed like nannies pushing perambulators along a desert cliff, and a crate of Champagne used as an assault weapon. There are two pseudo-Bond Babes in this one, a knife-throwing hit-woman (Beverly Maeda) who turns out to be the heroine and a ditzy singer (Tomomi Sawa) who gets an extended take in which she sings a nonsense pop song. There's also a climactic shootout between Hoshino and a blind millionaire called Stonefeller (Andrew Hughes), who "sees" his target by means of a rifle fitted out with a directional microphone. No, really. Someone else made all of this up. It wasn't me.
