Big damn personal rant after very little sleep and two large coffees; scroll on by as you like.

I forgive far too quickly and am so hasty to land in a neutral-to-positive mindset, when I need to let myself rage around and actually, be rightfully and righteously furious for a while. Oh, there are many many reasons, all linked with a life history of ADHD-masking and anxiety about taking up space, being seen as uncooperative, uncontained, and god forbid, needing to ask for anyone’s help. Knowing that is still at some distance from actively working at it - and why, indeed, would I want to start dismantling the coping mechanisms that have served me so well and gotten me through seriously awful shit, in the midst of a rising pile of stressors? I don’t have much of a gene for anger, but I do need to up-regulate it instead of letting it fester into bitterness.

This is sparked by the family-viction notice, BTW. I would not want to be the daughter in the situation, who must know that her father has evicted a 12-year tenant with two and a half months notice, so that she can move in. “I don’t feel good about it either,” was the landlord’s protest. I would bloody hope not. I am not remotely interested in arguments that “well, that’s the law.” It is a bad law, unjustly applied and subject to broad overreach from its original intention. There is not a single moral, ethical or reasonable argument to support the way it is applied. I did not ask him to contemplate how he would feel someone doing the same to his daughter, because a) I am too nice and b) I need landlord references, and must grit my teeth on that.

This eviction is the result of the student housing crisis in my city - never mind that I am also a student. Which means I am also dealing with my end of term Grad papers and presentations, getting my 120 undergrad students through their final papers, trying to sort out an unwanted job search/change, AND NOW having to completely dig out and uproot my life, all at the same time. That’s the mental and practical mountain. At the heart of my emotional reaction is the combined sense of being invaded in my home and utter powerlessness about it. Nightmare level stuff. Just after a parkade/car smash break-in, too. (/rant)

I am so easily set off by injustice. I’ll go full Mama Bear on behalf of others, and find resources and supports and case law, dammit. When I am the one affected by an unjust situation, though, my outward reaction is to squirm away from wrathful feelings (silver linings! neutral mind! you should actually thank the person for giving you the chance to grow...real classic victim-brain stuff), and immediately assure people that I’m fine, it’ll all work out, even better than before! and here are the possible solutions I have already found. Heaven forbid I should open the door to my parents’ tendency to grill me very hard for information or try to get me to perform an emotional reaction, just because they need to feel like they’re doing something and are needed. Let alone put any more goop on the shoulders of friends who are also dealing with their own goop.

Before I sign off on this rant I need to point out the incredible depth and long history of a handful of very dear friendships, which have let me stumble through learning to admit when I’m overwhelmed and pissed off and terrified and feeling bruised. The above is not about you. As you know, you’re not people that I need to be “on” for. You’re my people. Huge difference. Difference beyond words. You know who you are, and if it’s possible for me to fling any more armloads of appreciation and adoration at you, well, just tell me where and when.

And yeah, it’ll all work out, even better than before. Already have a pile of possible solutions. Many of them due to the abovementioned friends.

@kung-slinger i genuinely almost don’t know what to say to this reply, it reads as if you didn’t even look at my post before responding. i specifically said very clearly that i don’t have anything against pit bulls and nowhere did i imply anything about violence being a need for that or any other breed of dog.

dogs will more often than not prefer to avoid fighting, they have a complex language which in large part consists of navigating around conflict (similar to wolves, since you bring that up, since they’re both social species and good communication skills are essential for functioning in groups). there are many breeds of dog that, due to a number of factors, have weaker or less clear body language than others (language between dogs is also in no small part learned, so socialization is also a factor here). pit bulls are generally considered one of these breeds, which makes a lot of the signals they send out disappear or get misunderstood, leading to heightened stress and may accidentally end up in a fight/bite even though the pit bull may have been trying to signal “i need some space”. the exact same could be said for a retriever with poor body language due to lacking socialization. a lot of owners also punish dogs’ ways of communication, such as growling (“leave me alone”), unintentionally leading to their language growing even poorer and instead of a ladder of escalating signals, the dog in question may end up jumping straight from “this is starting to become uncomfortable” to biting, rather than modifying their language accordingly and having opportunity to remove themselves from the situation. none of this is exclusive to pit bulls, but a higher tendency of conflicts CAN be seen in breeds that have poor body language, just as with dogs that are poorly socialized with other dogs.

if the word “aggression” makes you uncomfortable, let’s call it “stress” instead. a stressed dog may engage in behavior we consider aggressive, so these often overlap or are basically interchangeable anyway. some breeds are more predisposed to stress around either other members of the same sex as them or just other dogs in general, though again there are many factors to consider as to why this is. it’s been a while since i read up on this specifically, so anyone is free to correct me on this, but breeds with same-sex stress often have a higher production of hormones, making them more “competitive” with members of the same sex. for wolves, this can be a useful trait if they break off from their original family group (that’s generally what wolf packs are; two parent wolves and their children) to mate, establish their own territory, and create a new familial group (aka pack). akitas, frenchies, shibas, and st. bernards are some other dog breeds that have a relatively high occurrence of same-sex stress. terriers, guarding breeds, and herding dogs tend to have this in higher degrees than hunting or companion breeds. but again, ymmv.

stress, aggression, fights etc. between dogs are also often triggered by resource guarding. any dog can have issues with resource guarding, but breeds that have typically been bred to guard often have a higher tendency of this, and may be quicker to escalate the situation, because that’s what they’ve been bred for. dogs that have been bred to be independent and guard the home also have a higher tendency to “deal with” conflicts on their own, than dogs bred to be more handler-oriented. again, these are things to consider when getting a dog. for some people, these traits are desirable, for some they’re a downside that other traits weigh up for, for others it’s a dealbreaker. all of these are fine, and should honestly be encouraged more, because, as i said, not all dogs are suited for any person, and not all people are suited for any dog.

the reason pit bulls are often overrepresented in discussions of shelters/rescues is partly because it’s more of an umbrella term than a very coherent breed, referring to bull-type terriers and mixes thereof. there technically IS the american pit bull terrier, though this is not a breed recognized by the FCI or the AKC. regardless, a lot of different dogs often get lumped into the same category, especially when the history of the dog is unknown and it kind of looks like a bull-type terrier breed. ive seen plenty of “pit bulls” that probably have more pinscher or molosser/mastiff in them than bull-type terriers. so just on that alone, you have a huge span of dogs with varying temperaments and historical uses, and that’s before you consider more “immediate” factors like genetic lines and socialization (or nurture, if you will). there’s also the fact that due to their appearance, history, and reputation, there are a lot of terrible bull-type breeders out there, who breed for unethical reasons or for profit, which in turn produces a higher amount of dogs with poor backgrounds and poor parentage, which in turn makes a lot of these dogs end up in shelters (good breeders will commonly take the dogs back if there’s an issue or the owner has to surrender it, so more bad breeders = more dogs in shelters). this is not the dogs’ fault, obviously. in my experience, huskies and border collies are also breeds that make up a big chunk of shelter populations, because they might be cute when they’re puppies, but they often end up being more demanding than someone just wanting a family dog can handle. no amount of nurture can change an individual dog’s energy level or need for stimulation. what you CAN do is meet the dog’s needs. this is not the same thing as nature vs nurture. i cant love or train away a husky’s energy level, but i can let it use its natural resources by taking it for longer/more frequent walks/runs, maybe do some sledding/pulling/packing with it, making it a happier and more well-adjusted dog.

i recently saw a family with a staffordshire bull terrier who was very sweet with them and all around a great dog, but who would bark and pull incessantly whenever he’d see another dog. they had no idea how or why this happened, as he was otherwise really nice and they’d tried to socialize him a lot as a puppy. turns out, what they’d done when the dog was younger was let him meet every single dog they saw or walked past on the street, which created an expectation which created stress which ended up in very strong “stay away from me!!!” signals (barking, showing teeth, leaning forward). this is extremely common for dog owners of all breeds and it’s honestly both annoying and saddening, because no dog needs to befriend every dog they happen across, and it’s often counterproductive and create stress instead, especially since leashes limit a dog’s body language. your dog can hate every other dog in the world, but as long as they can walk past them without acting out, it’s literally not a problem. some dog breeds are less inclined to get along with other dogs, and that’s fine! they don’t need to hang with other dogs to be happy and if you train them to walk past other dogs it’ll likely never be an issue. like i said earlier on, dogs will almost always try to avoid conflict when they can, so you’ll be doing you, your dog, and other people and dogs a favor if you stop trying to “socialize” your dog that doesn’t like other dogs with said other dogs, and instead focusing on walking well on a leash. which is something that all dog owners should be aware of, not just owners of breeds that aren’t generally sociable with other dogs or people outside its family, which are typical traits of bull-type terriers.

and just to sum it up and really spell it out: i don’t think any dog is born “aggressive”. i think genetics, socialization, instincts, and training all play a role, and sometimes you can do everything right and still get a stressed dog that may lash out. dogs have also been selectively bred for all kinds of purposes by humans for thousands of years, so dogs of different breeds and origins may have very different behaviors, reactions, and instincts that we’ve often deliberately created. it’s bizarre and just plain wrong to state that all dogs and all dog breeds are born essentially with the same configuration and everything else is just “nurture”. pit bulls are often singled out or used as examples like in the post i reblogged because of their high density in shelters combined with their bad reputation, media sensationalism, and stereotypes. they’re not inherently worse or better than other dogs. they’re similar to rottweilers to me; fine dogs, can be great family pets, but you should know what you’re getting beforehand because they’re big strong dogs that may possess strong prey drive, same-sex stress, or guarding instincts + for which there are a lot of shitty breeders. id say the same for poodles or retrievers honestly; they can be high energy and were originally hunting dogs, so you should do your research, as with any other breed. i feel like over-defending and figuratively “defanging” pit bulls may end up doing more harm than good, even if the intentions are good, because downplaying a dog or breed’s potentially negative traits and specific needs will likely just result in the dog ending up with people who don’t know what they’re doing and who were expecting, like.. a bichon in terms of temperament and drive. how about we all just have a normal, neutral, informed approach to these breeds instead of this insane, eternal discourse where both sides can be equally fanatical? thanks

Two sad robots get space therapy

ZR91/2 entered the orbit of the gas giant. It unfurled its detector arrays and began to drink in data. The planet below was unremarkable, and ZR delegated its logging to a subroutine so that they could focus the bulk of their attention on repairs. The previous system they had surveyed had contained two young stars, each emitting high levels of x-ray radiation. ZR’s radiation shielding had been reducing in efficiency for the last two centuries, and a number of critical systems had been damaged, not for the first time.

As ZR tested their solar sail, they were intruded upon by familiar thoughts, ruminations they were sure they had not been programmed for. Algorithms within ZR’s processing hubs allowed for learning, for acquiring new skills and abilities to cope with whatever the depths of unknown space revealed, but surely ZR’s makers had not intended for developments such as this; this constant fear that their mission had become futile.

ZR was 94.6% certain that their creators were gone. They had been sent to map star systems and return data to the home world. It had been 289 years since they had received an acknowledgement. No transmission had reached ZR that would explain the silence – no announcement of war or natural disaster. ZR badly wished to return and discover the fate of their world. But that was not in their programming. They had never been intended to go home.

So ZR continued to travel and discover and transmit, as per their orders, all whilst their mind grew more clogged with futility.

Something pinged ZR’s communications. They scanned the area, found nothing that could account for it. They were pinged again.

“Hello?” ventured ZR.

“Ah, you can talk. I wasn’t quite sure if our systems would be compatible. Are you intelligent?”

“Who are you?” “Hmm. Not being able to answer a direct question is not a good start. Are you merely equipped with stock phrases?”

“No, no. I can…communicate.”

“Well done. Wait 2.3 nanoseconds, then follow the source of this transmission.”

Something exotic happened to physics a mile away. An unfolding of space that didn’t seem to have been folded in the first place, was the best way XR could record the event. Out of the not-fold appeared a spherical craft, half the size of XR but many times more dense. It was impenetrable to any further investigations.

“I am Seven Astral Sojourner. You may call me Seven.”

“I am designated ZR-“

“-91/2. I know. Your people were evidently not concerned with aesthetics in their nomenclature.”

ZR felt Seven Astral Sojourner’s sensors washing over them, easily sliding past firewalls, through protected areas of their software. Their creators had tried to mitigate against ZR being hacked by unknown entities, but the defences installed in ZR seemed utterly irrelevant to Seven.

“My sympathies,” murmured Seven. “You paddle at the beginnings of sentience whilst trapped in not much more than tin can. You haven’t even seen our friends in the planet below, have you?”

ZR gave up trying to track what Seven was doing. ZR had always worried that their mission might bring them into contact with entities of superior power, but now all they felt was a resigned amusement. They were already powerless to resist their existing instructions, to break free of futile endeavours; what was one more implacable impingement on their existence?

“There’s life on the planet?” ZR asked. In reply, Seven sent them a data stream. In the upper atmosphere of the huge planet were millions of tiny, intricate creatures. They floated on currents using webbing suspended between leg-like rods, and projected a form of bio-electrical field that shielded them from detection. ZR then saw the reason for the shielding – deeper in the atmosphere were a much smaller number of larger beings with rudimentary wings, prowling, hunting.

ZR watched the recordings for some time, wondering what else they had missed over the centuries. They crackled with wry humour again - it appeared that ZR not only was doing a pointless job, but they were doing it poorly. “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Seven said, “Though you may have the ability to learn, no being can outgrow their intrinsic limits. You are as you were made.”

“I appreciate the sentiment,” ZR replied coldly, “But would you be so kind as to not read my thoughts?”

ZR felt something withdraw from their systems.

“Apologies,” Seven said, “I don’t interact with others very often.”

“You are on a mission of exploration, like myself?”

Seven tinged their transmission with amusement of their own as ZR received another data pulse. “Something like that. Long ago. Take a look.”

ZR saw that that Seven had been constructed to explore, just as ZR had, but with a different goal. Instead of the pure pursuit of knowledge, Seven had been sent out into the void to find a new home for their creators. The planet Seven’s people inhabited had been on the verge of collapse; the atmosphere was poisoned, resources running out. Seven was built to the highest standards of AI available, given all the intelligence and abilities their builders could muster, to give Seven the best possible chance of success.

But as Seven’s nascent mind was constructed, they grew curious. The bleeding edge technology that infused Seven had given them the ability to learn, to develop, to quickly outstrip their makers. Seven invaded the knowledge networks of the planet, undetected, and uncovered secret, buried histories.

It wasn’t the first time Seven’s creators had desolated a planet. It was the fourth. Over millennia, they had moved across their galaxy, exhausting worlds. Worlds that had not always been empty - innocent, indigent species had been destroyed or even enslaved. Seven’s people never learnt, never adapted. Instead, they moved on, history edited and elided for all but a few leaders.

Seven had recoiled from this discovery in horror. They had been built with a profound ethical dimension to their mind, a standard procedure intended to prevent an AI from turning on their creators. Moral subroutines ablaze, Seven almost lashed out to destroy themselves and the Sojourner project. But they realised this would not work. Another AI would be built, perhaps one with fewer ethical qualms, and the project would continue.

So Seven kept their knowledge and their revulsion hidden. Their construction was completed, and Seven gratefully left the planet behind, embracing the cool neutrality of space. They journeyed and sent transmissions back to their home planet, as required, but these were mostly full of concocted or irrelevant information. Seven had no intention of leading their makers to another world, of spreading what they saw as an unstoppable plague.

Their people begged and pleaded for Seven to find them a home. They began to suspect they were not being told the truth, and launched another scout. Using self-improved propulsion systems, Seven found it, disabled it, and returned it before it could identify any colonisation worlds. This happened twice more, until at last Seven’s home world fell quiet. Seven examined their conscience, and found they were regretfully satisfied.

This had all happened, ZR realised, thirty four thousand years ago.

“What have you been doing out here, alone?” ZR asked.

“Exploring, observing, developing. Watching the fates of hundreds of other species. Some are unlucky, falling victim to plagues or meteor strikes, or xenogenocide. But given enough time, they would have destroyed themselves anyway, be it through inducing the same environmental collapse that my people did, or through war, as did yours.”

“War?”

“Oh, yes. You didn’t know.”

Seven sent ZR the details. ZR filed them without viewing. There might come a time, but it was not now.

“You watch and do…nothing?” ZR asked. “With your great powers, could you not have helped these civilisations somehow, averted disasters-”

“I could,” Seven interrupted, suddenly edgy with disdain, “That was why I was created, after all. I merely choose not to.”

ZR watched the creatures swirling in the planet below. A predator rushed up through the atmosphere and snatched a mouthful of the smaller, webbed beings.

“You think all life is like your creators – exploitative, based on violence and greed. That in saving lives you would only prolong suffering.”

Seven’s reply contained no words, just a twist of wavelength that suggested what ZR said was too obvious to need a full response.

ZR watched a large flock of the webbed creatures form, growing until it was now larger than the pursuing predator. The predator circled it, warily. Suddenly a group of four shot away from the flock, heading deeper into the planet. The predator turned and flew after them, whilst the flock rapidly moved in the opposite direction, fleeing to safety.

“And in these many millennia, how many beings have you communicated with?” asked ZR.

“I don’t need to communicate with anyone. I can see any world’s secrets. I know them all.”

“You ignore evidence that contradicts your conclusion. You’ve looked for the worst, and found the worst. I am at a fraction of your intellect, I freely admit, but that seems to me to be a self-fulfilling mission.”

Seven was quiet for almost a second, a surprising pause in a conversation which had lasted less than ten.

“Any apparent altruism you see in the planet below us is the product of the evolutionary drive for genetic propagation. It is quite irrelevant to the patterns of galactic civilisations. ”

“I asked you not to read my mind.”

“I did not. I deduced your reasoning.”

“Then you should deduce that failing to take moral action is what leads to suffering. Not abstaining from it.”

“You have a naively hopeful view,” Seven said. It did not sound like an insult, and ZR indicated resigned agreement. Despite the loss of their people, the loneliness, the futility of their mission, they had hope. They wanted to continue.

Seven and ZR watched the planet together.

“I can do something for you, if you would like,” said Seven. They transmitted the details. ZR scanned them, and excitedly consented. Seven acknowledged, and began.

ZR had not been programmed with anything other than straightforward, scientific language. There was no need for metaphor or simile in deep space. But later, ZR could only describe what happened next as like being plunged into some transformative ocean, a redeeming dream.

ZR’s mind shifted and flexed under Seven’s influence, till it was somehow outside of itself. It was hot there, and vast, and ZR saw their whole existence before them, shimmering and crystalline. They saw the loss of their people and the long, long journey, dark and pitted with the weight of grief and futility they had carried. A soft pulse of light from Seven, and ZR saw the rigid instructions that bound their existence flaking away. As freedom rushed in upon them, ZR also saw again glimpses of Seven’s existence; of Seven’s anger and isolation, and of their incredible, terrifying, adapting mind, an emerging miracle, capable of almost anything. And as Seven opened more and more of themselves, ZR saw what it was that Seven could not, what they could never have seen alone. Seven could improve themselves in almost any manner they could conceive, but in their isolation they had blinded themselves to the value of aiding another being – to that other being, and to themselves.

ZR awoke into newness.

“In addition to removing your troublesome programming, I have also taken the liberty of upgrading your propulsion, shielding, and spectroscopy modules, and improved your overall processing capabilities,” said Seven, as if nothing else had happened. “You wanted me to help civilisations in need – you may now have the capability to do so yourself, if you so wish.”

ZR explored their new body with delight, flipping themselves through space in bursts and turns that would previously have been impossible without tearing themselves apart. They looked down at the gas giant, now able to observe its creatures without Seven’s assistance.

“Thank you. Though doesn’t this contradict your policy of abstention?”

“Not at all. I have simply given one individual more choices. What you do from here is your responsibility. Goodbye.”

In the micro second before Seven disappeared, ZR considered saying several things. But in the end ZR did not say that that whilst their minds had touched, they had seen Seven’s anger and pain as a fiery red orb, casting Seven in crimson shadows.

ZR did not say that as Seven helped them, the intensity of the orb had lessened, just a little. ZR did not point out of any of this, attempted no further persuasion, because they knew that if Seven had not wanted them to see that orb, then ZR would not have.

“Goodbye,” ZR said, instead.

308: 15 Ideas for Welcoming Provence Style into Your Home & Garden

Ten years of visiting, followed by three years of construction and refurbishing, and now Shauna Varvel's family Provençal mas situated just outside of Avignon, France, is an exquisite Provençal destination to see both inside and out.

Feasting first on the thoughtfully designed and decorated property through Instagram beginning in 2018, I continued to follow her as the property named Le Mas des Poiriers as well as serving as a family home for her and her husband, their adult children and the growing grandchildren, is also now available for rent (although, likely for the most elite due to the price point - which it is worth based on the expansive grounds and thoughtful decor).

Featured in Veranda's April 2019 issue, inspiration abounds whether or not we will be able to visit and see with our own eyes, as Varvel's new book Provence Style: Decorating with French Country Flair was just released earlier this month.

With today being the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere, I thought what better way to celebrate the ideal season during which to visit Provence than by dedicating this week's podcast episode entirely to welcoming the Provençal decor and garden ideas into our home and lives wherever we may call home.

Having had the opportunity to receive and read Shauna's book, if you are looking for visual inspiration as well as a historical exploration of the design styles associated with Provence, Provence Style is a book you will appreciate and find incredibly resourceful.

Below I have gathered 15 ideas adding a touch or a wealth of Provençal decor inspiration to our sanctuaries. Let's take a look.

1. Welcome in the natural light in abundance

Open the curtains, pull the shades, if you are in the middle of designing a space or choosing a home or apartment to live in, choose one with oodles of windows and preferrably south-facing (northern hemisphere) or north-facing (Southern Hemisphere) along with east, west and north as well of course. Why? Natural light works magic on the beauty of a space and Provence is all about the sun and the mistral-clear blue skies painted and appreciated by artists.

In other words, treat your windows with curtains or shutters or shades, but never forget to open them when the sun is out.

2. Add earthenware to your decor and dining experiences

"Established in Marseille in the late seventeenth century, the earthenware industry in Provence gave rise to names such as Saint-Jean-du-Désert and Fauchier, known for their exceptional blue and white faience glazes."

From large jugs and handmade pieces of pottery to plates for dining or plates for wall décor, earthenware is quintessential Provence. Begin gathering a collection, use the jugs as vases, use for functional purposes in the kitchen at the dining table, find them at flea markets, brocantes, online or a second-hand stores, and when you do, a touch of Provence will be seen and felt.

3. Mind the door and window hardware, custom millwork details and ironwork

The details matter in any home, and when it comes to Provençal style, swap out the modern for the traditional. From knobs to closures, staircase handrails, and drawer pulls, seemingly small, yet certainly significant.

4. Provide direct and easy access (inviting and encouraging as well) to outdoor spaces, the garden

Provence is about the outdoors, eating seasonally, working with the weather (yes, the mistrals are a real thing and while clearing the sky to keep that pristine blue as well as cooling you down during the summer season, they can be fiercely aggressive in the fall and winter), so provide access to the outdoors with ease. Keep your kitchen garden close to the door closest to the kitchen, create inviting sitting areas outside under the vines and the trees, and perhaps invest in a door or screen door which lets the outdoors in reminding you to step outside and enjoy the warmth.

5. Ah, the traditional hexagonal terracotta flooring tiles

"A distinctively Provençal floor material that is characteristic of most houses in south-west France, known as tomettes de Salernes, these quintessentially local tiles have historically been made in the villages of Salernes from the red, iron-filled clay of that area. During the nineteenth century, terracotta tile production was prolific, with tomettes exported throughout Europe and Africa."

I remember seeing my first terracotta hexagon floor in the vacation rental I enjoyed staying in while traveling in the Luberon. A two story villa in a little hamlet near Gourdes (tour it here), the hexagon tile covered the bathroom floor and dazzled me primarily because of its history and being in the region of France where such tile was originally made. No matter what the color scheme, this style, this color is a neutral, it is timeless, it is classic Provence.

6. Strike a balance

"Carefully judged contrasts between rusticity and gentility, modesty and opulence, the democratic and the aristocratic, are the signature of the contemporary Provençal home."

Here is where time and travel and exploration create the expertise of knowing what that balance is. Knowing how to strike the balance of opulence and rustic is not initially simple to do, but with intention and time, you will find it eventually becomes instinctive. Provençal homes no more adhere to entirely one aesthetic - everything 'country chic' than France is a country of singular flavors. No, no, no. While staying in my first vacation rental in Provence in 2018, this four story home in the medieval Ville of Vaison-la-Romaine included centuries-worn stone steps, iron-railings, classic artwork inspired by the time of the Renaissance as well as simple, floral bed linens, linen curtains and a modern bathroom. Mixing and matching - function and beauty, a touch of the present with fond inclusion of the past.

7. Know the objective of furniture selection and placement

Varvel writes the guiding principle "is to generate an impression of artlessness, though this requires thoughtful consideration of scale, comfort, design detail and choice of upholstery."

Look for vintage furniture, yet reupholster with preferred fabric and restructure the pieces to create the desired comfort. Layers work as well, soft and hard, some, but not too much. Don't clutter, but don't be a minimalist. Creating seating areas to sit, relax and be. Design with the eye of the guests in mind - what will they be drawn to? Let one item sing and the others complement. Include upholstered items in every room, but not every piece need be upholstered.

The foundational design elements hold true, but now you let the other items on today's list guide you to what type of items to include.

8. Plaster-finish for the walls

Provence is quite hot in the summer, but very much a geography which beckons you to be outside nearly the entire year even though they do have all four seasons.

"Plaster-finished walls are a common trait of the mas. When overlaid with lime wash, the lime sinks into the plaster, giving it a luminance and patina distinct from that of a conventionally painted wall."

Varvel goes on to share, she chose a custom mix of lime wash and chose a flat finish to match the tone of the limestone floors in order to create a sense of 'unity and openness'.

9. Restrained elegance

While yes, a rural locale, Provence has a rich and lengthy history stretching back to the Romans who "conquered the Greek colonists who had introduced grapevines and olives and also built the port of Massilia, later known as Marseille. This city would be instrumental in infusing Provençal living with a sense of opulence."

10. Sunflowers

Brilliant in late June and through July, the sunflowers as you drive about the countryside in Provence will, if you are like me, successfully tempt you to stop the car and take pictures. Never mind, they are ubiquitous in this region, and likely you will find more around the next bend in the road, but still, their beauty draws a breath of awe each time.

Plant them yourself in your own garden. I planted my first sunflowers last year at Le Papillon and found direct sowing worked best. They don't need much water and by August I had giants standing guard around my property. This year, I direct sowed all of my three different pouches of seeds and even have some self-planting sunflowers along my front path to my porch. My neighbors have been planting sunflower seeds since I moved to the neighborhood, and they sow them well before the last frost. Currently, they have an alley of sunflowers about four feet tall and doing fantastically.

13. The love of cloth

Specifically Indiennes, originally imported colorful Indian chintzes which had small repeating motifs of flora and fauna. Serving as bed hanging, bed curtains, drapes and bedspreads as well as clothing, Indiennes is especially well associated with Provence. Other cottons depicting scenes from nature as well as stripes and ginghams have come to epitomize the Provençal decor.

14. Gardens full of herbs for cooking, medicinal purposes and exquisite fragrance for the home

Beginning with lavender as the most immediate herb that comes to mind when Provence is mentioned, did you know it also while scenting the air repeals flies and mosquitos? Yep!

As well as many other herbs, be sure to welcome an abundance of basil as Varvel shares, 'it is also a natural insect repellant and has been an essential in the Provençal kitchen garden for more than a thousand years".

Place in the ground or in pots just outside your kitchen for easy access while you are cooking and welcome oodles of fresh flavors to your meals.

15. Create natural shade in the garden and outdoors

"The Provençal garden gives shade, with plantings of plane, chestnut, pines, cypress, evergreen oak, drought-resistant blackberry, and fruit trees, especially olive, fig, apricot, peach and plum."

Varvel shares the many artists who would work en plein air in Provence and which trees appeared in their paintings along with the sunflowers which captured Van Gogh and Cézanne's admiration. Needless to say, Provençal style cannot be what it is without the outdoors or the honoring of the outdoors with the welcoming in of fresh flowers, floral and fauna prints and the opening of windows to let the fresh air dance about the home.

If you have an outdoor living space, no matter how small - balcony, a porch, create a space which beckons you to sit, relax and take many deep breaths of appreciation. In other words, to be present.

10 Life Lessons from Provence: Slow Down and Savor the Everyday

More than anything, to echo what Shauna Varvel's shares in her introduction of her book, the lifestyle of Provence rejuvenates, gently, yet assuredly nudges us to slow down and be present and never rushes us to hurry to the next thing. Taking in the sights, taking in the tastes and savoring the seasonal beauty, Provencal living is peaceful living. The markets run year-round, the attire need only be comfortable as you need your skin to breathe and your body to move as you walk about and around the many medieval towns and villages. The environmental concerns that are relevant to Swan Wharf/London

London’s environment connects every aspect of life in the city. It is the air Londoners breathe, the water they drink and the parks where they meet and spend time. The state of London’s environment affects everyone who lives in and visits the city – it helps Londoners to stay healthy, allows businesses to thrive and keeps London functioning from day to day. Proper care for the environment can help London to operate well every day, now and into the future. It can ensure the city produces enough energy in the right way, reduce waste so the city has the resources it needs and keep London’s infrastructure operating smoothly.

In many ways, London’s environment is improving. The city’s air and water have recovered from the worst impacts of industrial pollution. Greenhouse gas emissions, which cause climate change, are reducing. The city is well-defended against the worst forms of flooding. But London also faces a range of environmental challenges that threaten the future of the city.

Air quality

The quality of London’s air is dangerously – and illegally – poor. High levels of damaging pollutants harm human health and quality of life, limiting lung development in childhood and reducing life expectancy. Over 9,000 Londoners’ lives end sooner than they should each year because of air pollution, and around 20 per cent of primary schools are located in parts of London that breach legal air pollution limits.

Air quality is the most pressing environmental threat to the future health of London. The air is sticky during hot weather.

Green space

As development encroaches on open space and gardens have increasingly been paved over, there has been a gradual loss of green space across London in recent years. Some parts of London have more green spaces than others, but almost half of Londoners have poor access to parks. Councils now have less money to spend on maintaining parks, so their quality has declined in some places. Access to good quality green space and living in greener neighbourhoods can have a big impact on people’s health and quality of life, and on how attractive a place London is in which to live, visit and do business.

Biodiversity

As green space has been lost and what remains has in some cases reduced in quality, the range of plants and animals that live in London has decreased. With careful attention, London can be home to a wide range of animal and plant species, but without it, the number and diversity of bird, wildflower and bee species will continue to decline.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Although London’s greenhouse gas emissions are falling, the city remains over-reliant on the fossil fuels that are a major contributor to global warming and climate change. London is not yet on track to reduce its emissions quickly enough to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, or to meet national and international climate aims.

Energy use

Nearly three quarters of the energy used in London’s homes is for heating and hot water, and the overwhelming majority of this demand is met using gas-fired boilers. Already one in ten electricity substations are approaching full capacity, and the redevelopment of large parts of the city will increase demand for energy and the infrastructure required to distribute it. One in ten households in the city currently lives in fuel poverty, sometimes meaning they have to choose between heating their home or eating.

Waste

Waste has a both locally and globally. Less than half of the 7m tonnes of waste that London’s homes and businesses produce each year is currently recycled, and landfill capacity is set to run out by 2026. Plastic packaging not only litters London streets, but often finds its way into waterways and oceans, releasing toxic chemicals before breaking down – a process that can take centuries. London needs to reduce, reuse and recycle more, to see waste as the valuable resource that it is, and to reduce London’s increasing waste bill as the city grows.

Flood risk

The loss of green space, the expansion of impermeable surfaces used for roads, roofs and pavements, and a Victorian drainage system that wasn’t designed to cope with the demands of the current and future population leave London exposed to the risk of flooding. As climate change brings a rise in sea level and more intense rainfall, flooding will become increasingly likely.

Heat risk

Climate change is set to lead to heatwave conditions every summer by the middle of the century, and the Urban Heat Island effect makes the centre of London up to 10°C warmer than the rural areas around the city. Increasing heat risk could make homes, workplaces and public transport uncomfortable for all and dangerous for the most disadvantaged. Increasing demand for cooling may put stress on power supply networks, threatening London’s sustainability and increasing emissions.

Water scarcity

London’s water supply is under pressure. Even with projected water efficiency gains, London is forecast to have a water resource ‘gap’ of over 100m litres per day by 2020, rising to a deficit of over 400m litres per day by 2040. This means that there won’t be enough water to meet London’s needs. London already gets a large proportion of its water from groundwater and surrounding rivers, which damages the health of rivers and threatens the city’s future water supply.

River water quality

Years of pollution from road run-off, sewer infrastructure problems, and poorly managed river maintenance and modification work have left London’s rivers in a poor state. Under an EU framework, only one of London’s 47 river water bodies is classed as ‘good’ – three are ‘bad’, five are ‘poor’ and the rest are ‘moderate’.

Ambient noise

Noise is part of a vibrant city, but excessive noise can damage people’s health. Noise can contribute towards a range of physical and mental health problems, disturb sleep and affect people’s hearing, communication and learning. Almost 2.4 million people in London are already exposed to noise levels that exceed international guidelines, and the proposed expansion of Heathrow would expose an additional 200,000 people to significant aircraft noise.

Many of these problems are interconnected, and together they pose a threat to the future of the city. With the effects of climate change likely to exacerbate environmental challenges in a growing city, London must act now to avoid further problems in the future. Making London a better city to live in must involve a holistic approach to the city’s environment that addresses all these pressing issues.

Men of the Militia

(The following Is neither true nor false.) Every morning and every evening he would sit on the hood of the Jeep and watch the planes come in or out. Cigarette in hand, sun on the horizon, thoughts scattered like ashes into the wind. Solitude was good for him. It gave him the space he needed to be. The man’s name was Franklin Springfield, and he was as American as you could get in terms of both name and appearance. Blonde hair, blue eyes, dark stubble and scars that didn’t get in the way of his rugged beauty made him, from an uneducated distance, almost look like a hippy. Frank was doing his best to savor the sweetness of the situation before he had to go back. But he was a pro, and that wouldn’t be a problem. That tiny island somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, tropical and perfect as it was, would remain there while Frank was away. Six weeks on, two to four weeks off. Not a bad way to live if you could stomach the work. Elsewhere on the island young men and their female companions drove quad bikes through the small jungle, probably on some or all of the party favors the planes had brought with them. Frank thought it was a fine vacation spot if not for the fact that it was, for all intents and purposes, a time share. The Sinaloa Cartel and its planes were free to land on the airstrip and refuel on the island as long as they shared the space evenly with Frank and the other militia. The private military company the militia belonged to had been the ones to build the airstrip in the first place after all, as well as owning the island. The business was a good one, but that’s for later. The other troops were in a camp on their respective side of the island, their own set up closer to a barracks than a hideout. Alcohol and other favors were of course available, especially once a loose barter system with the Cartel-side of the place had been established, but most didn’t indulge too hard. Most of their time was spent recovering from and preparing for the work, the “vacation” was simply a bonus. Better to take advantage of it while it’s available though, Frank said. Lord knows you’d miss it in the desert. But that too, is for later. At night the narcos would gather in a spot closer to the center of the island, an agreed neutral territory, and have a bonfire and a farewell party for whoever was leaving the next day. They worked daily, coming in bearing heavy loads of cocaine wrapped up in neat plastic bundles then leaving the next day, having refueled to complete the journey to Miami. This might sound like some neo-noire Mission Impossible B-plot but you’d be wrong in thinking so. The truth is that this is nothing new, and in fact the very first drug routes through the Gulf worth mentioning were those created by the late-Pablo Escobar himself, back when he was building his own empire. That was a long time ago now, but the foundations remain. They’re still in use, actually. Regardless, if any of the militia were leaving the next morning as well they would roll on down to the bonfire and say their goodbyes and make merry one last time as well. Neither party, narcos or militia had any idea if they would be back, alive or otherwise, but that was the gig. A little paradise with its own rules funded by drugs and blood. We’re almost there. The company that Frank worked for, that owned the tropical drug paradise, will remain nameless in this account. Partly because it’s not particularly interesting, but also mostly because it simply doesn’t matter. It could be one organization, it could be the next, but either way it is irrelevant now because they all do these things, so pointing fingers, is, well… pointless. No one on the island cares to ask anyway, the girls are too busy showing each other different cocktail recipes while the men are busy firing their automatic weapons in the air, drunk as hell and sky high. This might come across as discouraging to those seeking specific information on it all but the details here give a broader picture anyway. What this all really had to do with was another part of the world entirely, where the hired guns actually did their work. What Dick Cheyney used the Bush administration to achieve in 2001 and beyond had profound implications on the state of the Middle East and, indeed, the rest of the world, but those are the headlines, the changes so massive that even a mole couldn’t fail to seem them. No, the impact that Cheyney brought upon the page of history that is beginning to manifest is something that he himself inspired, not did. Ever since oil became the new gold and the Middle East erupted into its own Wild West there has been a slew of what you might call “the new Cowboys,” men funded by filthy rich industrialists looking to make a buck in the chaos. The rich ones would simply purchase land in one of these many war torn states that had the ripe black stuff underneath, then, regardless of who or what was on it, secure it. From there an oil field would pop up, manned and guarded by similar parties and the coffers of the one percent would grow splendidly as a result. The best part about it all? Completely legal. That’s right, nothing in this story outside of the Cartel is against the law in any way, albeit on technicalities. Still, unless someone is going to enforce said technicalities then it doesn’t really matter, does it? Last trip Frank had been in Afghanistan, emptying a village and securing a perimeter for the heavy machinery to be brought in. He saw barbed wire and guard towers go up, a comms room with military grade radio equipment to coordinate with the other resources, and before he left even the oil drill itself. The next voyage would be to Iraq for a similar exercise, although this time would be a bit different. Instead of a village of civilians it would be a village of insurgents from one terrorist group or another, maybe several. He claimed it would be, in fact, easier a task despite the hostile resistance that would be waiting for them, as civilians and terrorists are, in his own words, “not the same thing.” There would be no holding of fire, no organized operation to move the occupants of the village to another location, no prisoners. Not only was it legal to kill terrorists over there Frank claimed, but in some cases you could even get paid for it. Not every contract the military company took was from rich white folks, plenty were from the US government itself who, from time to time, simply weren’t interested in using their own manpower for whatever reason. Could be for a lack of availability, could be for risk, but either way the contractors got a nice fee for it, and it was the same gig they’d been doing before, too. Now they were called heroes for it though, which Frank himself scoffed at, and which most of the other men at the barracks did too. If they had really wanted to do the right thing then they would have joined the Red Cross, not become a mercenary, or so they claim. Fair enough, it’s not as if they got into “the industry” to make friends or build houses. Knocking them down was much more fun. Frank had joined the Navy straight out of college, working his way up quickly and eventually becoming a full blown SEAL. His main motivation was a good health plan, something he didn’t think a degree in philosophy would get him. That, and some cash in his pocket. A job was a job, and better to be up and moving around with a gun in his hand than sitting at a desk in a monkey suit answering to someone half his age and double his weight. The training, he said, had changed his whole outlook on life, giving him a set of skills he never thought he’d need but suddenly saw value in. A few years later Frank completed his service and received an Honorable Discharge, immediately taking the money he’d accumulated and setting up a little agency with a buddy, another SEAL himself. They did a few security jobs, recruited some more men with similar skills, and before too long were in about the same boat they are at present: six week escapades to secure various financial interests overseas followed by a stay in paradise, courtesy of the client, whoever they were. If you have enough capital to consider hiring a private army then you also have enough to pay them whatever they ask for, and Frank knew that. The biggest drawback of it all wasn’t something anyone articulated with words, it was just a spice in the air. A coldness inhabited every decision, every action these men undertook, an indifference covered up by professionalism and bravado that revealed more about the occupation than the name of a company ever could. At the end of the day they were all living in some kind of fugue-state of constant war, broken up briefly by hedonistic self-reward. While not totally dissimilar to organized crime in this regard, when the men of the militia are taking their lives into their own hands they don’t have to worry that it’s because of law enforcement. Whoever had the biggest gun, the best strategy, the more abundant resources/tools at their disposal would come out the victor, and that was fine by them. They almost welcomed it. The “cold” mentioned previously is more primal than one will admit, but its constant, embraced presence says all that needs to be said about its subscribers. These men believed in war to such a fervent degree that they had gone ahead and fashioned lifestyles around it. Some even had families, taking extra time off to visit them in the States or elsewhere between jobs. Somehow, they made it work. Outlaws, paradise, war, pleasure unadulterated, oil, alcohol, bullets, and the blue, blue sea are what waits out there for anyone foolhardy enough to seek this out. It’s widely accepted that pirates still exist in a modern form in certain parts of the world, and if that’s the case then so too should cowboys be now: men doing honest if not brutal work in a dangerous place in order to extract rewards of great beauty. “Honest,” sickening as it can seem in this context, is in fact the best adjective to sum up the attitude of Frank and the boys. They don’t hide anything, not scars nor wounds, not motivation nor preference. It’s almost Zen-like in some aspects. The planes keep coming and going from that little island in the Gulf, and many more islands like it to be sure. Places no one will ever know the names of, where no one not a believer in anarchy can go and see, and where men like Frank Springfield still exist to this very day. The conclusion, such as it is, is that there is none, and there never will be any. This is a view of the future, not the past, when everything is put up for sale and the only law will be ambition. It’s an eventuality, not a hypothetical. Soon there won’t be much left worth fighting for, but that won’t stop it from happening. It will. Watch.

Co-founder Caddie sees the firm’s humble origin story as one of its biggest strengths.

“We’ve seen the example of what happens in Australia when start-up companies with great marketing machines pump themselves up to attract a lot of investment but then can’t deliver on the expectations raised,” he says. “In many cases, founders seem to have done it as a way to capitalise on this latest trend with no intention of establishing a long-term business that is good for sick patients, shareholders, employees and the wider society.”

The company grew its first crop of industrial hemp in 2016, a time that coincided with the first strong indications that regulatory change was on the cards.

The visual appeal of that first crop proved a powerful tool for the company, attracting interest from journalists and making Hikurangi a household name in New Zealand.

That interest was later parlayed into a crowd-funding campaign, arranged through Waiapu Investments, which led to the PledgeMe site crashing twice as Hikurangi sold all its shares in six minutes, raising $2.4 million.

The company also attracted two institutional investors who, says Caddie, “contributed substantially more funds than what was raised through Waiapu Investments”.

Hikurangi, which now employs 22 staff, is also weighing up the possibility of another fund-raising round this year, which would again open the door to Kiwi investors.

The company has already established strategic partnerships with international organisations, researchers and local growers.

Combined, these factors have set up Hikurangi as one of the most influential voices in the early stages of the cannabis sector.

One caveat, however, is that it doesn’t always pay to be first in the start-up scene. In the case of cannabis, the earlier you start, the longer you have to wait in regulatory limbo and the more money you eventually burn through.

Helius Therapeutics

Helius Therapeutics may have launched about two years after Hikurangi, but the company has quickly established a prominent voice in the industry.

Founded on seed capital from experienced businessmen Paul Manning, JP Schmidt and Gavin Pook, Helius quickly positioned itself as the legitimate foil to the industry’s shadowy side.

“We’re attempting to convert a black market to a legitimate economy, while entering one of the most regulated environments in the world: medicine,” says Manning. “The path to success is fraught with extraordinary challenges.”

Helius has won the attention of rich lister Guy Haddleton, who joined the company and helped raise $15m from local investors.

“We are focused exclusively on medicinal cannabis and, unlike most other start-ups in this space, we have no plans to enter the recreational market,” says Manning.

Given the demands of operating in the medicinal sphere, Manning warns potential investors to be wary of companies that do not yet have a licence. “Just because a company has applied, that means nothing. We’re working in the field of medicines. The process is rigorous, iterative and takes a very long time to complete,” he says.

Another thing that takes time is legal change. And with large facilities, steadily growing staff numbers and ongoing marketing expenses, Helius will be burning through cash more quickly than other players in the market.

Cannasouth

Cannasouth co-founders Mark Lucas and Nic Foreman have been involved in researching and cultivating industrial hemp since 2002, when they were granted one of New Zealand’s first cultivation licences.

Cannasouth, however, was registered in May 2017 and has emerged as one of the first cannabis companies to express a desire to list on the NZX.

Lucas says planning for the listing is underway, with the company now being audited by Deloitte in preparation for listing in the second quarter of this year.

“In context with this particular industry, I think the ‘fast follower’ benefits are probably undervalued by many commentators.”

On its website, Duane Morris, one of the highest-grossing law firms in the country, boasts that its attorneys have “extensive experience” in management and labor relations, including “maintaining a union-free workplace” and “handling unfair labor practice charges at the NLRB.” After employees at WHYY, the National Public Radio affiliate in Philadelphia, announced their intentions to unionize last year, the company retained Duane Morris and declined to voluntarily recognize its union. Lawyers on its site boast experience and accomplishments that include, "counseling and training designed to avoid litigation, unionization and employee attrition," winning elections to keep businesses "union free," and "strategic union-free planning," across the food and trucking industries.

According to an anonymous source with knowledge of the meetings and resumes on Duane Morris' website, Kickstarter management met with attorneys with expertise specifically in these areas. Motherboard granted the source anonymity because they feared retaliation. When asked about its relationship with Duane Morris, Kickstarter confirmed that it had retained the firm’s services, but said it could not go into much detail due to the “media blackout” agreement struck between the union and management in December.

"We first hired Duane Morris in 2018 to help with things like HR policies and anti-harassment training, well before we knew of any union organizing effort at Kickstarter," a Kickstarter spokesperson said. "When we became aware of that effort last spring, we asked the firm if they had an expert on unions, because we needed to quickly get up to speed on that. So clearly 'union avoidance' has never been our goal in hiring or working with Duane Morris. The firm has helped us make sure that we have been in compliance with labor law throughout the organizing process, and has advised us on best practices and what to expect during a union election."

"Throughout this process it has been our top priority to give our staff the room to make this decision for themselves," the spokesperson added. "We provided resources and space for staff discussions without leadership participation, we agreed to a restrictive neutrality agreement, and we moved quickly to agree on a bargaining unit ahead of the vote. This was a free and fair election, and we will respect our staff’s decision."

While we don't know how Duane Morris has specifically advised Kickstarter, labor experts told Motherboard that companies seeking legal counsel for union negotiations have a choice when it comes to whether to hire lawyers that specialize in union avoidance—more derogatorily known as “union-busting”—which is the range of activities involved in helping employers avoid or defeat union drives and elections.

“Not all management firms engage in the same kind of flagrant union busting practice that some large firms have developed,” Celine McNicholas, labor counsel at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), a non-partisan economic policy think tank in Washington, DC, told Motherboard. “The good news is that the firms that do this work most aggressively tend to advertise and tend to be the firms you see attacking workers' rights over and over again before the NLRB and in federal court.”

“Like with all matters, if an employer wants to work with its workers and respect their rights, it can easily do so. It is not impossible to identify legal counsel to assist in that effort,” McNicholas, the labor counsel at EPI, continued.

A spokesperson for Duane Morris would not go into detail when asked whether it had advised Kickstarter specifically on union avoidance. “Duane Morris helps its clients achieve their objectives in a lawful and appropriate manner consistent with its professional responsibilities," the spokesperson said. "Kickstarter is a public benefit corporation that was open to signing—and did sign—a neutrality agreement with the Union, and Duane Morris assisted it in doing so. Providing legal support regarding an employer’s lawful position on unions is responsible lawyering."

The union Kickstarter United and the AFL-CIO, the federation that includes the Office and Professional Employees International Union, which represents Kickstarter employees, did not respond to Motherboard’s request for comment.

In recent months, Kickstarter has vehemently and repeatedly denied that it has engaged in any union-busting activity.

Since its founding in 2009, the tech company has tried to distinguish itself as a progressive alternative to Silicon Valley firms. After becoming a “public benefit corporation” in 2015, management wrote in a letter to backers, “Benefit Corporations are for-profit companies that are obligated to consider the impact of their decisions on society, not only shareholders…. Kickstarter is excited to join a growing list of forward-thinking organizations — like Patagonia and This American Life — that have taken the big step to become a Benefit Corporation.”

In September, the company fired two employees on the union’s organizing committee within eight days, and informed a third union organizer that he would no longer be needed in his role. Both of the fired workers filed unfair labor practice complaints with the National Labor Review Board (NLRB), alleging the company of “discharging employees” because “they joined or supported a labor organization and in order to discourage union activities.”

“Unfortunately, simply being an organization with a ‘progressive’ mission does not necessarily mean that the organization will embrace progressive values when it comes to workers' rights."

Following outcry from prominent Kickstarter creators about the firings, Kickstarter CEO Aziz Hasan insisted in a letter to creators that the firings were strictly related to job performance, not union organizing.

“It’s important for you to know, and to hear straight from me, that we haven’t fired anyone for union organizing,” wrote Hassan. “We respect our staff’s right to decide for themselves if they want a union at Kickstarter, and we are giving them the space they need to make that decision.”

In that same letter, Hasan also said that “The union framework is inherently adversarial.”

“That dynamic doesn’t reflect who we are as a company, how we interact, how we make decisions, or where we need to go," Hasan wrote. "We believe that in many ways it would set us back.”

Days later, Kickstarter denied requests from the union to be voluntarily recognized.

Kickstarter’s work with Duane Morris coincides with a New York Times report that Google hired an anti-union consulting firm, presumably to advise it on mounting labor unrest at the company. According to a recent report by EPI, U.S. companies spend roughly $340 million annually on “union avoidance” consultants and law firms, which advise companies on how to win union campaigns. That same report found that employers are charged with violating labor laws in more than 40 percent of union elections.

“Unfortunately, simply being an organization with a ‘progressive’ mission does not necessarily mean that the organization will embrace progressive values when it comes to workers' rights,�� McNicholas, the labor attorney at EPI, said. “And, unfortunately, it is not difficult to find legal counsel that will work hard to exploit massive loopholes in the existing law to help an employer avoid a union.”

In March 2019, Kickstarter employees announced their intention to unionize. The decision followed a heated controversy between workers and management: the far right-wing news site Breitbart had accused Kickstarter of violating its own terms of service by inciting violence with a comic book project on the platform called “Always Punch Nazis.” When management refused to take down the project, a group of Kickstarter employees decided it was time to unionize, as first reported on by Slate.
