Whump Prompt #1309
Anon asked:
Could you do prompts for whumpee who has been Turned against their will into a vampire, in case you haven't already? Their whumper sire is far older and stronger than them and doesn't think he has done anything wrong by giving them the "Gift" of immortality. Curious about possible physical sensations whumpee might experience, as well as the emotions and thoughts that might be racing through their head.
I have a couple of ideas - feel free to add in the replies/reblogs!
Tooth pain as fangs grow in - their current teeth have to fall out for the new ones to grow in, and it’s like wisdom teeth.
They’re severely fatigued from the transformation.
They could get an infection from the initial bite.
They could suffer from sensory overloads as their senses adjust to their new abilities.
If their ears become pointed, they’ll be in pain - what happens to any current piercings?
What if their body tries to reject the vampirism? This could make turning even more slow and painful than it needs to be.
Maybe they feel a disconnect with their own body after the turn - their own body doesn't feel like theirs which makes them anxious/unsettled/or even angry.

You mentioned treating infections with heat recently- how does that work?
There are two ways we use heat to treat skin infections.
Today, in a hospital setting, something called "warm compresses" are generally used when treating something like an abscess (a pocket of pus below the skin). The procedure for this is generally to take a chemical hot pack, crack it, wrap it in a moist wash cloth, and place it over the site of the abscess. This is replaced maybe once per hour, if the nurse has time.
Generally, this is done in addition to IV antibiotics. The idea is that the warm pack softens skin around the pus pocket, letting it break through and drain. The antibiotics prevent the infection from spreading, and once the buildup of pus is gone, the antibiotics take care of the remaining infection.
Prior to antibiotics (and coming back soon if we end up in a post-antibiotic era), they would use hot compresses instead.
Hot compresses are different.
Hot compresses can be used with or without antibiotics. They are a good first line treatment if you can catch a skin infection early. They area great for small areas of cellulitis, abscesses, and small-medium cuts and scrapes with signs of mild-moderate infection (some redness, swelling, drainage, and pain around the injury- though definitely ask a doctor first if you have streaks coming from the wound or have a fever).
For a hot compress, you want to get 2-3 clean cotton rags. Set them in some near-boiling water. Fish one of them out with a fork, let it cool, dripping over the pot until it is just bearable on skin. You don't want it to burn, but you also don't want it comfortable. Think 106-110F. Fold it and hold it against the site of the infection. You may need to hold a folded dry cloth on top of the wet one due to the heat.
It will hurt at first. If it doesn't, the rags are too cool.
When that first one stops hurting, put that one back in the water and fish the next one out, and repeat the process. After about 5-10 minutes you'll notice that even though the rags are just as hot as they were before, they no longer hurt when they are placed on the skin. The area will look red. Do this for about 20-30 minutes with as few interruptions as possible, then let the site cool. Do this 4-5 times per day until the infection goes away.
This works for two reasons. Reason one is that in order to fight an infection, blood needs to be able to get to the area to bring white blood cells and remove waste and dead cells. Sometimes normal blood flow doesn't allow this to happen efficiently enough to treat the infection. Applying heat widens blood vessels, temporarily increasing blood flow to the area and allowing more immune cells to do their job. If you're on an antibiotic, this also allows more of it to get closer to the infection. Reason two is that at higher temperatures (102F+) the process parts of the immune system use to kill invading cells works slightly better. This is thought to be one of the reasons mammals get fevers in response to infections and major injuries.
Hot compresses essentially give the body an edge when it comes to fighting a skin infection.

On the seventh day the stitches were taken out, in spite of which there was a report of erysipelas in the evening papers.
Erysipelas (more common know as St. Anthony's fire in English, apperently. In Dutch we call in wound rose) is a bacterial skin infection, leading to swelling, redness and fever. Left untreated - and in the time this story was published, 1924, the invention of broad-spectrum antibiotics like pencilin was still several years away - it can lead to some serious complications like blood clots, blood poisoning or meningitis

Attention all! Let's talk about a silent threat that's been lurking in the shadows. It's time to shine a light on BACTERIA EVOLVING TO BECOME RESISTANT TO ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY 🧠
Point 1: Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in the world of medicine. Bacterias are adapting and changing, making it harder to treat infections with the drugs we once relied on.
Point 2: Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop a defense mechanism against the drugs we use to fight infections. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics are major contributors to the development of these superbugs.
Point 3: As the world becomes more interconnected, the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is becoming easier and faster. This is a dangerous trend that we cannot afford to ignore.
Conclusion: The battle against antibiotic resistance is not one we can win alone. It's time for everyone to join forces and work together to spread awareness, reduce the overuse of antibiotics. Hypothetically we could be one day way from a superbug that we possibly might not be able to treat.

please don’t leave me - steve harrington x reader
Tumblr media
Plot: Steve’s demobat bite is more serious than everyone first thought. Pairing: Steve Harrington x Female!Reader Warnings: Implied character death, mentions of injuries, blood, infections/pus and the usual gross stuff. I...apologise in advance. As always, if I miss any triggers, please let me know! Notes: This is for @whumptober Day 11: 911 What’s Your Emergency? and I also used the alternative prompt of Self Done First Aid. Obligatory I am not a doctor, so sorry if my medical knowledge sucks.
Tumblr media
“Come on guys, it should be just around here somewhere.” Nancy explains, walking amongst the trees. Eddie, Robin, Steve and Y/N follow behind. As they walk, Y/N keeps a wary eye on Steve. What seems like only a few moments ago, the demobats attacked them, injuring Steve in his side. Since then, she’s been keeping a close eye on him, so that if something goes wrong, she can be the first one to help. Even though the thought of anything happening to Steve is her worst nightmare. They’ve already lost so much, and she can’t lose him too.
“You sure you’re alright?” She asks, and Steve chuckles lightly.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Y/N opens her mouth again, and Steve cuts her off with an “I promise you Y/N. I’m okay.” He squeezes her hand for reassurance, and Y/N nods. Yet, she still keeps a cautionary gaze on him. Just in case. When Steve moves his hand to the wound on his side, Y/N furrows her brows, her concern increasing.
“Nance, how much longer do you think it’ll be? My feet are getting tired.” Robin asks, interrupting her thoughts for just a moment. Steve squeezes her hand once more. Hopefully, this will all be over soon. Then they can go home and finally be safe and happy together.
The group continues walking, Y/N and Steve hand in hand. Y/N keeps a protective hold on him. Just in case. Hopefully, they’ll be out of the woods soon. But then suddenly, Steve stumbles, his body dropping like a rock with an ‘oof’ as his body hits the ground. Immediately, Y/N is by his side. “Steve? Steve, what's going on?” He opens his mouth, but only emits groans of pain. Y/N looks over his face, pressing her hand to his forehead. He’s white as a sheet, and his skin is warm and clammy. Her blood runs cold. She’s no doctor, but she knows that this is bad. Especially how soon it came on. How did she not notice this? He seemed fine this whole time, but she’s his girlfriend. She should’ve noticed something was wrong. Why didn’t she fucking notice? “Steve, come on. Talk to me.” She pleads, but his words still come out as mumbled, and as hisses of pain. Her hands go to his bandage, and she unwraps it. As soon as she does, the problem is revealed. The wound is already leaking pus and blood. No doubt it’s infected. “Shit. Steve, come on, we’ve gotta get you out of here.”
“But the gate’s all the way back there, it’s too far-” A voice, either Nancy or Robin, speaks. Y/N doesn’t even register or care who it is.
“I’m not leaving him in the fucking Upside Down! He needs to go to a hospital!” she snaps. Immediately, she regrets it, mumbling an apology, which the voice seems to accept. Hurriedly, she rips at her shirt, trying to make another makeshift bandage through her tears. She whimpers, her hands shaking too much to wrap the fabric around his side. “Come on, come on…just take deep breaths for me.” She begs.
“I’ll do it.” Eddie kneels beside her, taking over, which Y/N gratefully accepts. Nervously, Y/N wrings her hands, hoping and begging to whatever higher power there is that it works.
“Is it bad?” Steve murmurs, opening an eye to look at her. Y/N realises this could be the last time she ever sees him open his eyes again, the last time she sees those beautiful brown eyes staring back at her. Her heart sinks. This can’t be the end. Oh god, why didn’t she notice things were more serious before now? It’s all her fault.
“Steve, we’re gonna be okay. It’s all gonna be fine. We just need to get you out of here.” She insists, trying to hide her tears and fear to keep both Steve and herself from freaking out even more. Although she knows it’s too late for that by this point.
“Y/N, he’s gonna be okay, alright? Metal people like him survive these kinds of things.” She recognises Eddie’s voice from beside her again as he gives her a squeeze. She nods, hoping to god it’s true. “Look, we’ll both take a side each and get him out, alright?”
Yet as they try to move him, Steve continues to groan in pain. He can barely make it a few steps without crying out in pain. “Steve, come on. You gotta move. We gotta go home.” Y/N urges gently, even though she knows this isn’t a good sign.
“I’ll be okay.” He murmurs, shuffling forward. “I just need to rest a bit.” Before she or Eddie can even react, Steve’s body drops again. Y/N falls with him, wrapping her arms around Steve’s shivering form as he leans against a tree trunk.
“Do you want my cardigan? Come on, I’ll give you it.” She asks, taking it off wrapping it around him. Steve looks over at her, staring at her as if he’s seeing her for the first time again.
“You’re so beautiful.” He murmurs. “The prettiest girl in all of Hawkins, and you’re my girlfriend. I’m so lucky.” Managing a small smile, Y/N kisses his hand.
“And you’re the prettiest boy in all of Hawkins.” Steve chuckles, wincing a little at the pain. When he shuts his eyes again, Y/N gasps. “No, wait! Tell me about the future plans you had, remember?” Her voice quivers. “The ones with us moving away from Hawkins a-and having a family of our own. Yet we’d still come back and see the kids. Remember that Steve? Our life together?” Her stomach twists as she recounts the story. The story of the life they could’ve had together.
The life they should’ve had together.
The life they’ll never have together.
And the fact they won’t is all her fault.
“Yeah….” He murmurs.
“Come on Steve, just focus on me and my voice. I’ll be right here. I’m not letting you die. Come on, we’ve gotta see the kids graduate, remember? Our kids.” Opening his eyes once more, Steve manages a small nod, and Y/N breathes a small sigh of relief. At least he’s still awake, for now. “Think you can walk?”
“You know….” Steve lets out a breathless chuckle. “I thought you were out of my league at first. I was so nervous about asking you out. But I’m so glad I did.” He cups her face in his hand, wiping her tears away. “I love you so much. Never forget that, okay?”
And then, he goes still. “Steve?” Y/N asks. Nothing. “Steve, come on, you have to wake up. Please.” She begs. Still, nothing. “Steve please. Come on, don’t do this to me, please. Don’t leave me! Don’t leave us!” One final, anguished call rips through the night. “STEVE!”

THE COWBOY STENCH
Tumblr media
That Cowboy Stench
by Dr. Jim Kornberg | Nov 1, 2008 | Inside History
Frontier cattle drovers were definitely hygienically-challenged.
Having worked in the emergency room as a young physician throughout the 1970s, I learned the difference between human “sweat” and “stench,” as these apply to the presentation of different patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
I concluded that “sweat is fine.” “Stench” is another matter. The differentiation between these two presentations is not intended to be judgmental in any manner, whatsoever. It is simply the clinical, olfactory (smelly) observation that human beings are sometimes deprived by choice or circumstances of the opportunity to maintain proper hygiene. The definition of “proper” hygiene is beyond the scope of this discussion. It varies not only by geography but also by century, among many other factors. Thanks to the advertising of commercial hygiene products (e.g. deodorants and shampoos), our perception of “proper hygiene” in the mid-20th and 21st centuries is quite different from that of the late 19th century in frontier America.
The bottom line is that humans who either can’t or won’t bathe for long periods of time are at risk for a variety of maladies. Such was probably the case regarding the frontier cowboy, especially in winter, when bathing in the outdoors presented the risk of chills and hypothermia. The cowboy was often on the trail for months, with little or no opportunity to wash up, much less to bathe. He usually had no full change of clothing and no “toilet articles.” He slept in dusty conditions, on dirty blankets contaminated with animal hair and other animal “debris.”
Because of his arduous circumstances, the cowboy was at risk for a number of medical setbacks. I intend to discuss only the most minor and aggravating ones. All of these problems continue to afflict us today when we go for extended periods without bathing or washing. The problems are usually confined to the skin and occur because of the accumulation of sweat, dirt and excretions from sebaceous glands that together provide the perfect growth environment for bacteria, fungi and parasites.
The accumulation of normal skin bacteria without bathing is a controversial topic. Some dermatologists think that this process does not put humans at risk for diseases but is just harmless, intense “body odor.” They also argue correctly that our frequent bathing and hand washing with harsh soaps sets us up for dry skin and irritant dermatitis.
In any case, the cowboy often “smelled like his horse,” because of the accumulation of normal skin bacteria. If he had the misfortune of contaminating a cut or abrasion with strep or staph, he might have developed impetigo, an abscess or cellulitis. Although usually not fatal, these infections were often chronic, easily spreadable to other areas of the body and contagious to others.
More troublesome were the fungal infections that afflicted his groin area (“crotch rot”), buttocks and feet (athlete’s foot). For the cowboy, these infections were a curse, because they itched so badly and tended to burn. Like today, excessive itching of fungal-infected areas with dirty nails could have led to an opportunistic bacterial skin infection.
Finally, there is little doubt that the cowboy who had not washed up for weeks was at high risk for parasite infestation, especially fleas and lice. When first caught from mice, the former could have rarely led to contracting plague (the Black Death). The latter could have appeared as pubic lice (“crabs”), or lice infecting the head or body. Under rare circumstances, the latter could have been a setup for fatal typhus.
Hollywood has shown varying degrees of realism with respect to this subject. In my experience, the accuracy of a cowboy’s state of “trail hygiene” was rarely, if ever, depicted before Sergio Leone’s 1964 epic A Fistful of Dollars, starring Clint Eastwood. In this and many later movies, the characters have appeared as sweaty and stinky as some of the unfortunate patients that I recall having treated in the emergency room.
I doubt, however, that these actors were ever as miserable as our cowboy who had spent three or four months on the trail, with no warm shower waiting for him at the end of each day in his hotel suite or his dressing room trailer.

Whump Prompt #1242
Submitted by Anon - Thanks!
It may not come up as much as wings, horns, tails, or other non-human body parts, but possibly useful for orcish characters - imagine the kind of pain that comes with breaking or cracking a tusk. Breaking a tooth exposes the nerve to air, but imagine that pain getting amplified. You could probably do a lot with migraine headaches, possibly nausea, or passing out, especially if it happens all at once. Don't even get me started on how dangerous an infection would be...

READMORE TRIGGER WARNINGS: hospitals, hospice, infections, terminal illness, medical, mother mention.
Hey guys... I, uh, got some bombshell news regarding my mother today. Recently, she had to go back to the hospital due to chest pain and some concerning vitals. As far as we knew at the time, she only had a RSV infection, and was still on track for hopefully being able to come home soon. Today, they told us that she has osteomyelitis — an infection of the bone, and that she will need to be on antibiotics for a minimum of six weeks in order to treat it. Both the infectious disease doctor and heart doctor saw her and agreed that she could NOT be put through anymore surgeries, they fear it would just make it worse that this point, so if these antibiotics don't end up working, hospice is her only option. I don't know what's going to happen, my feelings are everywhere and I haven't exactly been feeling too great myself either lately, so I'm sorry again I'm not around and not exactly being talkative, but... thank you all for continuing to understand. I can say I have a lot of confidence in the doctors that have been helping my mom, and hopefully I'll have good news to tell you all soon.

GERMS
Tumblr media
Germs" is a general term used to refer to microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, that can cause disease or infection in humans, animals and plants. These microorganisms may be pathogenic, meaning that they have the ability to cause disease, or they may be harmless or even beneficial in certain contexts.
Here is a description of the main types of germs:
1. bacteria: these are single-celled microorganisms that can be beneficial or harmful. Some bacteria are essential for digestion and the immune system in the human body, while others can cause infections such as salmonella or tuberculosis.
2. Viruses: They are much smaller particles than bacteria and are not complete cells. Viruses need to invade host cells to reproduce and can cause diseases such as influenza, HIV or COVID-19.
3. Parasites: These are multicellular organisms that live at the expense of other organisms hosts and can cause disease. Examples include intestinal worms and protozoa.
4. Protozoa: These are single-celled microorganisms that can cause infectious diseases in humans, such as malaria and giardiasis.
Germs can be spread through direct contact with infected people, contaminated surfaces, contaminated food or water, and are often the underlying cause of many infectious diseases
SYMPTOMS
Tumblr media
Symptoms of an infection caused by germs vary depending on the type of microorganism and the part of the body affected. Here are some examples of common symptoms of infections caused by germs:
Fever, headache, throat inflammation, muscle and abdominal pain, usually see itching or allergies, fatigue as this is common during an infection as the body is using energy to fight the invading microorganism. Shortness of breath and chest pain may be present in respiratory infections such as the common cold, flu and cough.
Symptoms may vary in severity and duration depending on the individual and the specific infection. If you experience symptoms suggestive of infection, it is advisable to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
PREVENTIONS
Preventing infections caused by germs is critical to maintaining personal health and preventing the spread of disease in the community. Here are some important prevention measures:
1. Hand Washing: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom, before eating, and after touching potentially contaminated surfaces.
2. Avoid Touching Your Face: Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth, as germs can enter the body through these areas, use face masks to prevent the spread of germs.
3. Vaccination: Make sure you are up to date with recommended vaccinations to prevent infectious diseases. Vaccinations are a powerful tool for prevention.
4. Personal Hygiene: Maintain good personal hygiene, including proper skin and hair care, and change clothes regularly.
These preventive measures can help to significantly reduce the risk of infections caused by germs.
