DanandPhilCrafts + Fucked Up Queer Devotion + Christian Homophobia: An Essay
We’ve all been talking about the willingness of Dan and Phil to perform the ritual, we’ve all been talking about the intimacy of carving out your lover’s heart, but I have not heard anyone talk about the fucked up side of Dan and Phil’s (fictional) relationship with each other, and with Him, so here goes.
On the craft channel, Dan and Phil act overwhelmingly positive, like satanic children’s show hosts, but this is clearly a farce. We see them drop their smiles quite a few times during the crafting- most notably in Glitter Faces when Dan’s craft turns out wrong, and when Phil cuts Dan’s hand. “Don’t cry, craft” is directed towards the audience, but it seems Dan and Phil are following their own advice. Cults, after all, prey on vulnerable people. While they do seem scared of doing the ritual, and their involvement with Him, they are, however, definitely willing. In
The blood on Dan after he kills Phil is interesting; The handprint on his shirt isn’t a sign of a struggle, but rather Phil just grabbing his shirt- that’s pretty intimate, honestly. The blood on his face could’ve been caused by a bunch of things: blood splatter he wiped at? wiping at his face (eyes?) with a bloody hand? or Phil holding his face? (I like the third option) The blood on his nose might totally have been accidental, and just a thing that happened, but it could also be an allusion to the cat whiskers, in the spirit of bringing things back to the beginning and whatnot.
After the ritual is complete, there’s the obvious tarot symbolism. @freckliedan has a great post about this, but I’ve got more to add, so bear with me. Yes, Dan and Phil are framed as the lovers, but that’s not all. While the sexual deviance associated with the devil card has clear connections to queerness, it’s main association is usually unhealthy relationships and dependence. From this, and the obvious devotion displayed in the video, the craft versions of Dan and Phil are implied to be unhealthily dependent on each other, and devoted to the point of obsession. While the relationship certainly isn’t abusive, this obsession just isn’t healthy.
Furthering the unhealthy relationship idea is when Phil calls Dan “Sampson”. In the Bible or whatever (I’m not Christian sue me) Sampson topples these pillars, killing both himself and his enemies, which has a clear parallel to Dan’s stacked ingredients falling over, but the use of “folly” is interesting, and suggests a further connection. Sampson had married a prostitute, and she sold him out, basically, leading to his enslavement and later death. In this story, this is the clearest and most obvious act of folly by Sampson: marrying someone who he shouldn’t have, someone who it was taboo for him to be with. Connected to Dan and Phil, it suggests that their relationship is dangerous due to the social taboo, but it’s also implied that Phil will betray Dan. Perhaps we’ll see that in a 5th crafts installment, or perhaps it’s simply a commentary on being in a relationship with someone considered unacceptable.
Speaking of unhealthy relationships, that’s sure what they’ve got with Him! Leading up to the ritual, Dan and Phil are shown to be scared of Him, even though they call Him their friend. Dan’s head shake when Phil says “crafting has improved my life in numerous ways” is very telling. At the end, Dan’s shoulders tense at His first footstep, however, when He actually touches Dan, he doesn’t seem scared at all- forgive me for this next point, but from the way he kinda leans into the touch and tilts his head back, it seems more like he’s going for “turned on” rather than “scared”.
“Okay, cool” you say, “but what does it mean?” Well, Dan and Phil’s relationship in this series is not just about homoerotic undertones- this is an allegory for toxic queer sexual relationships. Why would they make something about toxic relationships when they’re in a healthy relationship? With the toxicity, and the power imbalances, and the satanism, Dan and Phil’s (fictional) relationship is a representation of Christian fears of queerness, and the supposed immoral/corrupting/anti-Christian effects of being in a queer relationship. The fear Dan and Phil show throughout the series is representative of internalized homophobia. They’re scared to align themselves with Him because it means accepting their own queerness. Dan shows more fear than Phil throughout the series (like after his glitter face turns out to be a pentacle) which parallels his real world internalized homophobia that he’s experienced. By holding hands with the devil (or baphomet?) standing behind them, Dan and Phil have embodied every conservative fear about queerness, but have come out on top. Through their YouTube channel, we get to do the same.

If whoever is behind the Jade Emperor's death is trying to cause the world to spiral into chaos, I think Nezha is the next one on their list, and here's why:
(My theory located below, condensed into occasionally colored bullet points, and with pictures! So you don't get bored :>)
So
Let’s take a look at these pictures:
Tumblr media
Here, in this picture, we get to see all of Heaven’s generals gathered to stop Azure’s rebellion in its tracks.
Tumblr media
Now look at this second picture. In it, Nezha and Red Son are the only discernible figures standing out from the crowd of Celestial Soldiers. Which to me, points to one thing:
Nezha is the only (or at least most prominent) general left in Heaven. Meaning before the Jade Emperor’s death, he and the Jade Emperor were just about the only ones running the show. Why are they the only ones left? Well there are a few reasons, but they basically all boil down to:
Most of the really important Celestials left
Allow me to provide my evidence by listing several examples we've witnessed in-show via the following bullet points:
Erlang was nowhere to be found during Azure’s second rebellion, implying that he isn’t present in the Celestial Realm (I heard somewhere that he lives in a mountain in the Mortal Realm and doesn't interfere with Celestial Realm business unless asked by the JE himself, though I'm not sure if that's true or not. Regardless, he doesn't seem to be present in Heaven nonetheless).
Tumblr media
Iron Fan left the Celestial Realm to be with DBK
Tumblr media
Similarly, Kui Mulang sacrificed his position in the Celestial Realm for love as well
Tumblr media
Azure Lion, Peng, and Yellow-Tusk are all former Celestials who decided to rebel against the Jade Emperor, getting them kicked out of Heaven
Considering how many instances of Celestials abandoning their duties in the Celestial Realm (or just being kicked out in the Brotherhood's case) we’ve seen in the show, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine that many other unmentioned Celestials also followed suit, until the Celestial Realm became absurdly understaffed.
I think the Jade Emperor and Nezha being basically the only brain cells in charge could also explain a few things as well:
The Celestial Realm’s overall absence from mortal affairs
If the only people in charge were the JE and Nezha (who was also busy guarding an incredibly important world-destroying artifact, the map to the Samadhi Fire), it would make sense why the Celestial Realm wasn’t getting very involved with the Mortal Realm. They were too busy keeping the realm up and running to interfere with mortals.
Nezha’s personality shift from his mischievous, caution-to-the-wind, “LET-ME-AT-’IM!!!” attitude in the book to his responsible, frustrated, “Don’t-poke-a-fucking-fork-in-the-socket” personality in the show
If Nezha had to take on more and more responsibility in the Celestial Realm (what with having to help keep it running and guarding the map of the Samadhi Fire), his personality would likely shift as a result, turning into the personality presented in the show today.
(That’s also another parallel between him and MK, that is being forced to take on a larger role in the world by forces outside of their control, when they’d really rather not).
Tumblr media
Nezha wanting to fight Azure to the death
While the main reason for Nezha’s stubbornness seems to be that Azure becoming the new Jade Emperor was a big no-no, it could also be that deep down he knew if the Jade Emperor fell, and Azure couldn’t handle the JE’s power, then the responsibility of keeping the realm together would fall to him. A responsibility he wasn’t ready for.
I’m not as certain about this, however, and it could easily just be a personality thing + Nezha knowing the possible consequences of if Azure failed to keep control of the Emperor’s power.
Tumblr media
Why there were only two magic dog statues guarding the Jade Emperor's throne room in Revenge of the Spider Queen (and really just the Celestial Realm's lackluster security overall. Seriously even Jin & Yin robbed the place with seemingly little to no trouble)
If Nezha and JE were basically the only ones in charge, it could explain the poor security in the Celestial Realm. It's not that they're bad at security or anything, don't get me wrong, they're just spread too thin, and have a lot of other things to focus on besides making sure people don't rob them.
My friend suggested this as a possible consequence of a low staffed Celestial Realm when I told them about this theory, and I agree with their idea.
Now here’s the fun part: What Nezha disappearing could cause, because oh boy would it cause a lot! Here’s some possible consequences of Nezha getting poofed:
Tumblr media
Celestial Realm on fire
With their basically last leader gone, the Celestial Realm would likely erupt into chaos, which could in and of itself lead to half of the things on this list.
Tumblr media
Meeting Erlang
If Nezha disappeared, then the Celestial Realm might end up calling up old generals to help ease the chaos, such as Erlang Shen and Princess Iron Fan. Heck, this might happen even without Nezha disappearing into thin air, considering how much work he’d be swamped with.
Tumblr media
Red Son getting some screen time
This might seem a bit arbitrary, but it builds off my last point, because if Iron Fan gets called up to do damage control on the Celestial Realm as a result of Nezha going missing, Red Son would probably take a more active role in the plot.
We’ve seen how he’s basically been recognized as a part of the Monkie Crew now, and we also know that he cares about Nezha, so it's not hard to imagine he'd want to help track down where the missing prince vanished to. Thus, this might be an opportunity for Red Son fans to get their win.
The overarching plot (as well as episodic plots) of season 5
With a Celestial Realm in chaos because nobody’s around to manage it, some demons, animals and artifacts which were being guarded in the Celestial Realm might get loose, requiring our heroes to get them under control before they can cause too much carnage.
This could offer a chance to at least semi-return to our original monster-of-the-week format, albeit with each episode being a bit more connected this time, and there still being an overarching plot (AKA, Operation: Where the Fuck is Nezha).
(And if you're wondering why I also mentioned Celestial animals, in the book, the Goldfish Demon was originally Guan Yin's pet goldfish, who had escaped it's pond and started causing havoc, and the Rhino King originally was a bull(?) that belonged to Lao Tzu, so animals escaping and causing havoc is all too possible)
Tumblr media
Obligatory “The gamemaster would gain hold of the Big J’s power”
Probably the first reason that sprang to y’alls minds when I said Nezha was next on the chopping block, but I’ve saved it for last so that you read to the end (hehe I'm so mischievous). Yes, if Nezha gets kidnapped, then the one pulling all the strings behind this would effectively have the JE’s power in their possession.
This is, of course, assuming Nezha doesn’t manage to sneakily teleport it to someone before he gets captured, although it’s possible that wouldn’t keep the JE’s power from our dear gamemaster for very long.
Now, for my final statement, I’d like to turn your eyes to the last scene of the Monkie Crew and the Monkey King in the S4 special.
Here, Monkey King says that whatever our dear gamemaster has planned, the Monkie Crew can handle it. Together. It then cuts to a shot consisting of the entire Monkie Crew, before shifting to the final segment of the episode.
But
Tumblr media
Look at this scene.
Look at who’s missing.
In this scene, we can see the entirety of the Monkie Crew. We can see the original 5 members, we can see Monkey King, we can see Macaque, even Red Son is effectively a part of the gang now. Everyone is here.
Everyone except Nezha.
Nezha is not yet recognized as a part of the Monkie Crew.
He’s still all on his own up in the Celestial Realm, trying to hold everything together. The only thing holding everything together.
The gamemaster knows the Monkie Crew can handle their schemes.
So they’re not going for the Monkie Crew.
They’re going for Nezha.

My attempt at keeping track of who made out with whom and how people are related to one another in Playboyy. For now I've only added the confirmed info (pretty sure Aob also made out with his other (ex-)colleagues etc.) and I'm going with the theory that Prom and Porche are half-brothers (they might have the same mom or the same dad, we'll see ^^).

Anyways. The other night I had a dream where I threw a party at my house and all my friends were invited. But because of my cramps everyone kinda just ignored me and hung out either in the upstairs area or outside and I was curled up on the couch, in a lot of pain and crying. And when I looked up I saw Sanji. He was coming up some set of stairs facing the couch and when he saw me he rushed over. Concern was etched onto his features, and he asked me what was wrong. I told him.
Immediately he gave me a kiss on my forehead and said, "wait here." (which made me roll my eyes because where else would I go?) But when he came back this time he was carrying a blanket, heating pad, and had a little tray with tea and my favorite snacks in it.
It was so vivid and felt so real. The blanket had a snoopy pattern that was so cute and the heating pad was hot. The tea was sweet and he brought me chocolate covered pretzels and strawberries... I started to cry because I was so grateful and he gave me that hug that Flynn Rider gave Rapunzel in Tangled. It was intimate and so realistic. My head laid in his lap and he wiped my tears away and stroked my hair. He started to hum and I drifted to sleep in his lap, eventually waking up at like 3am on my cousin's couch (i was visiting her at the time).
That dream was insane. It felt so surreal i was confused where i was when i woke up.

What always gets me in the end of Arcane episode 9 is Jinx. Not the tragedy of her starting a war when the council finally votes peace. Not even that she accidentally kills Silco. But how insecure she is, how torn between Vi, who's her sister, her blood, and Silco, the man who took her in when Vi left her. She knows to a point Silco is a bad man who manipulated her ("right here he stabbed Vander in the back, just like he planned to with me"), but she's been betrayed by Vi several times and therefore has a hard time trusting her. She wants to believe Vi when she says they could leave together, but then Vi keeps (unknowingly) reminding her of her past and her ghosts. Jinx is just written in a way that makes her thoughts and actions so perfectly understandable, even if I'm not in her state of mind. And that imo is what makes Arcane such a masterpiece.

My Opinions on Dream’s Canon Romantic Relationships:
(Spoilers) (Don’t take this too seriously)
Nada - A dumpster fire that lasted like, what, a day? Two days? Nada lost her whole damn kingdom, fucking died, and got sent to hell for 10,000 years when Dream went full Nice Guy and couldn’t accept her rejection. Basically a woman gets punished for a man’s shitty behavior. I’m glad she slapped him. At least the sex was good? 😐
Calliope - Seemed to be a decent but not great marriage for most of it. Ended messily. Fortunately it was the normal kind of messy divorce and not, you know, being thrown in hell. She’s the mother of what seems to be Dream’s only child, and disagreed with his parenting. Probably for good reason. No idea how a Muse/Endless union produced a mortal.
Killalla of the Glow - Dream’s oldest known relationship. They seemed to be pretty happy together, though Dream was waaaay more into her than she was into him. Shockingly, Dream wasn’t responsible for this relationship ending. In contrast to Dream’s other exes, her life after Dream was pretty good.
Alianora - While we don’t actually see why they broke up, I’m gonna go ahead and believe both Alianora and Desire when they say that it’s Dream’s fault. This woman was literally hand picked by Desire for Dream and saved Dream and the Dreaming, only for Dream to be a shitty boyfriend (husband?). At least she got a skerry and a dreamstone out of it. That’s kind of like alimony, right?
“That female on—what’s that pretty plane with all the twinkly lights? You know where I mean.” - Never shows up in the comics, but Desire says “what [Dream] put her through wasn’t pretty at all” and, yeah, that tracks.
Thessaly - Thank fucking god we didn’t have to see this relationship on page. Thessaly is a fascinating character but an awful person. They were apparently sickeningly in love, but Thessaly was smart enough to realize that the relationship was Definitely Hurtling Towards Something and bounced. The real victims here are the residents of the Dreaming. They had to put up with post break up Dream.
HONORABLE MENTION:
Nuala - Girl, you are so lucky Dream never returned your feelings. You dodged a bullet. There is no way that relationship would have ended in anything but disaster.

Marian loved Guy
She was 'stirred' by him. Guy knew so. She didn't deny it when Robin said it. The writers endorsed it as their personal view. Thank you.
She was willing to marry him! At that one point before everything was lost. Marian thought Robin was dead and she went ahead and offered Guy her hand if he would only kill the Sheriff. With Robin out of the way she had very few objections to marrying him and he was an easy second choice. She could fix him. She wanted him really.
'I cared for you; I still care for you!' 'Everything we've ever had or could have'. Excuse me? And she said those at a point when she was broken down and pleading with Guy - I doubt she was pretending. She acknowledged they had a thing going on and it mattered to her.
And Guy said 'there was something between us' and he was right. Marian couldn't fake all their chemistry. Like the way they teased each other when she followed him on business.
She resigned to their first wedding quite peacefully - she only really pulled out because she needed to save her father from death. She knew Guy had 'qualities' which wouldn't make it all that terrible to be his wife i.e passion, devotion, chivalry, poise, attractiveness and all that Robin lacked.
She was certainly wowed when she walked in on Guy dressing.
And she took the chance to give him THAT kiss when other things would've worked as a distraction. Also, are you telling me they weren't kissing for the whole time Robin was reviving himself from the dead and escaping? The sequencing would say yes. She could've given him an innocent kiss, like a kiss she would give Robin! But no; Guy evoked more passion than Robin ever would.
She loved that gorgeous horse Guy gave her and spitefully told Robin he could do better at giving her gifts. I hate gender roles but Guy was a real girl-provider and pleaser and Robin was a lame boyfriend.
She wouldn't let him die. Multiple times.
She decided to go back to the castle after staying at the camp for such a short time! When Marian and Robin were up in the tree there were definitely other ways she could have escaped - Robin didn't want the whole hostage thing. But Marian was a bit too keen to go back to the castle, giving up being with Robin who she supposedly loves sooo much, returning to actual living conditions and to Guy.
She was so happy when he came back to defend Nottingham - the look on her face - the way they stood to meet the attack and she put her hand on his arm. They were so coupling that episode (except she refused to marry him).
She was perfectly willing to accede to Guy's request and stay at the castle to 'make the place bearable'. Our girl just wanted to be with him really.
She saw the side of him which wanted to build a home instead of burn one. She was well aware of his potential as a lover.
......
Marian didn't love Guy
She said 'I would rather die than be with you, Guy of Gisborne.'

Decided you only live once and am watching the leaked episodes out of order. Am not regretting it. Highlights/commentary from what I watched tonight (Emotion and Pretension) include;
Lila: And I wasn't invited?
Kagami: Of course not, you're not a precious stone. You're just a stone.
Lila: *offended*
Marinette: I can't go like this! *gestures at her everyday outfit*
Chloe, meanwhile: *goes to the Diamond Party in her everyday outfit*
Adrien, also meanwhile: *ALSO goes in his everyday outfit*
My first impression of the 'ballroom': WHAT KIND OF TETRIS LOOKING WALMART FREEZER IS THIS. THIS IS NO BALLROOM.
Chloe: MEDIOCRITY FLOWER ALERT, YUCK.
*Chloe full on rugby tackling Marinette, complete with a flying leap*
Felix, out of nowhere: DUUSU SPREAD MY FEATHERS (like OK man, you're really gonna transform IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM like that huh)
Argos: *casually murders half of Paris while singing about it*
Ladybug: *aggressively yoyoing at Argos while ranting*
Argos: dodge dodge dodge smile smugly dodge dodge-
Felix: *standing in an OMINOUSLY GLOWING changing stall while transformed with his stolen miraculous*
Adrien: *walks in* (someone teach this child self-preservation)
Argos: Aren't you incredibly happy?
Kagami: *attempted murder*
(next episode/Pretension)
Gabriel: Because Adrien has a destiny, and that destiny does not include sharing pancakes with you.
My brain, almost instantly: THEN THEY CAN HAVE WAFFLES HAH TAKE THAT
Kagami: Even better! You follow me, you spy on me, and now you've kidnapped me so you can get to know me?
Felix, smiling hopefully: ...Yes?
Kagami: *crosses arms* You are utterly incompetent at social relations.
Felix: *continues to smile hopefully*
literally everyone relevant: *converging simultaneously on the Eiffel Tower* WE'VE COME TO SAVE YOU, KAGAMI.
Kagami and Felix: *having A Moment*
Ladybug and Chat Noir: *visible confusion*
Ladybug: ...This magical charm will remind you that, in case of a problem, Monarch will never be a good ally.
Mrs Tsurugi, literally Monarch's No 1 ally at the moment: *nods happily*

1. King Dedede would wreck my shit
2. If he was the size he’s shown to be in, say, Super Smash Bros. In official games tho, since Kirby is only 8 inches tall, Dedede can’t be more than like 2 feet.
3. He would still probably wreck my shit

reading 10 books one after the other in 1 week is NOT reading. you're skimming over the words, barely paying attention to the plot and characters, and by the end of this you won't be able to remember a single thing about them. you're supposed to take a longer time to read and, you know, enjoy the damn book. or not, if the book's bad, which you wouldn't know if you're not paying attention.
it's this annoying trend of wanting to be "a reader" and the aesthetics of academia and such that are the root cause of so many awful books getting so much attention and mediocre writers stagnating and never improving.
