why do people tag Character A & Character B right alongside Character A/Character B they are different tags that serve different functions if characters are romantic in a fic, don't use the gen relationship tag right next to the romantic relationship tag it defeats the entire purpose of the tags having distinctions

It sucks how much people genuinely think that supporting something in a fictional context is the same as supporting that thing in real life :((
Like, do you people really truly believe that fictional characters are in any way equivalent to real life people? Do you understand how absolutely ridiculous that sounds?
“But they’re minors/siblings/victims/etc!” NO THEY’RE NOT. They are a figment of someone’s imagination that can have literally any traits you want them to cause fiction is something made to be manipulated for our viewing pleasure. That’s why AUs are a thing. That’s why headcanons are a thing. Cause fiction is meant to be manipulated for you to enjoy! You can’t have headcanons for a real life person. Because real people are not the same as fictional people. At least, I hope you don’t treat real people like they are fictional characters.
“But why would you want to ship [insert thing here]? It’s gross!” Okay, and? It isn’t hurting any actual real person, and it could even be helping someone who is using this to cope with their own trauma! And no, your personal discomfort is not a reason to completely delete content cause you can easily just block the tag/the creator and never see it. It is your responsibility to curate your own experience and if you are incapable of doing that, it is your responsibility to stay out of fandom spaces until you are mature enough to do so. It is not the responsibility of everyone else in the world to cater to your specific needs. You shouldn’t expect every single person to have the exact same needs as you and the exact same ways of coping with said needs.
“But groomers will use this thing to manipulate vulnerable people!” Indeed, that does happen. But it is not the fault of the person who made the content. It is always, and I mean always, the fault of the groomer themself. By saying “I was groomed by this content” you take away the responsibility of the actual groomer who did it. Don’t absolve them of their crime because of what they used for the crime. No matter what, it was always their fault and the responsibility of that is on their shoulders. Even if that content didn’t exist, they would’ve found some other way to groom you because that is simply who they chose to be and that is the unfortunate and sad truth.
It is completely okay to be uncomfortable with something! Grossed out even! Or something can be literally triggering for you. That is okay! And if someone doesn’t tag their content properly and it gets to you, you have every right to be mad about that! But that does not mean the person who made the content needs to delete what they made. You just have to block them so that you’ll never see their content again. You don’t even have to engage with them. That’s the beauty of the internet! We’re all strangers and once someone is blocked, it’s as if they never even existed! You’ll never meet them irl or be forced to interact with them. They are dead to you.
Also side note, but helpful information! When you block someone on Tumblr, their posts can still end up on your dash if someone else reblogs from them. Idk if Tumblr has changed this in the few years I’ve been gone, but a way around that is to add their blog name to your filtered content! That way, even if someone else reblogs from them, it’ll still be hidden from you :D

Kenobi-centric fic recs
Everything here will heavily feature Obi-Wan Kenobi in some fashion, and will vary wildly by ship, tone, and fic-type though I'll do my best to give little blurbs/not-too-spoilery summaries.
The fics range from gen to explicit, in some cases pre-date tagging ettiquette, and, no, no I have not re-read them all (ye gods have you seen the word counts).
In a few cases I'm basing my summaries on very hazy memory and I have a noted bad habit of skimming straight past explicit porn when I don't want to read it, then forgetting its there entirely - so caveat lector!
These are mostly fics that I currently mentally catalogue as Wonderful Obvious Obi-Wan Kenobi Goodness fics rather than expecting to dig up any obscure hidden gems. The list would probably look very different on a different day. It's far from comprehensive, and the categories are loose at best. But here it is!
I've been contemplating putting something like this together for a while but been a bit nervous of sticking my head up above the metaphorical parapet. As, follows my fave character around without caring overmuch about the ship trash, I've got quite a list of Star Wars fics inhaled/rediscovered.
(Wee bit too used to coming into very dead fandoms long after everyone's left, put the chairs up on the tables, the metaphorical lights have been turned off... and the not so metaphorical bills have stopped being paid. More than once I've stumbled into a wonderful old fandom fic archive only for it to vanish into, Only What Was Saved on the Internet Archive Remains status. Even when the archive isn't actually an ex-archive, many don't actually allow for interaction. Apologies to the authors I've never worked up the courage to comment on, this is an explanation not an excuse!)
Obi-Wan's apprenticeship fics:
Commander Kenobi - norcumi (complete, 9646 words)
Obi-Wan gets de-aged in the midst of battle. Cody gets to find out what teenaged Obi-Wan was like. Given Obi-Wan thinks he's fresh out of Melida-Daan, nothing like whatever Cody might have been expecting.
A Town Called Stagnation - deniigiq (complete, 33,000 words)
Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan take a trip to Stewjon, to let Obi-Wan get in touch with his roots post the horrorshow of his early apprenticeship. Smalltown thinking and the trauma of recent events clash horribly for everyone involved.
Another brilliant author who's whole fic-output is well worth checking out. Their wry utterly charming character voices never fail to amuse, even when the POV character is one I'm currently in an... actually I wouldn't mind some bashing of this guy kinda mood. I draw amusement and sympathy for Qui-Gon's character in every single one of their immediately post-Melida Daan fics for context here, with my knowledge of that event thoroughly warped and contaminated by the current popular fanon take on the matter too.
Though more Cody-centric, and thus Clone Wars era, than anything parallelogram (Complete, 33,000 words) and they're neutral (complete, 9900 words) by the same author are also wonderful.
poisoned chalice - qigiined (Complete, 9900 words)
Another author with the wit and deftness of characterisation to make immediately-post-Melida-Daan Qui-Gon's POV both amusing and sympathetic. They've also got quite a few other gems!
Qui-Gon's very wry POV as he tries to navigate raising a very traumatised child, and appeasing his various lineage members.
through hardships to the stars - kivaember (WIP, 148,000 words)
Canon divergence where Obi-Wan's apprenticeship snafu on Melida-Daan went just that much worse than those Legends-were-never-technically-canon novels would have it.
As a result Obi-Wan and a very young Jango Fett end up on the run from a terrifying darksider, whilst Jaster Mereel and Feemor despearately try to catch up with the pair.
Little Lights Stories - ms_nawilla (WIP, 628,000 words)
Qui-Gon neglected too much of Obi-Wan's training, so Obi-Wan isn't immediately knighted post-Naboo despite saving Qui-Gon's life and defeating the Sith.
Anakin goes to the creche, Qui-Gon's in utter denial, and Obi-Wan begins the rocky process of finding his own feet post-Naboo, getting through the thorny process of working out who you are as your own person after living under someone else's oppressive shadow for far too long.
Super detailed epic detailing all sorts of wonderful possible jedi-culture headcanons, illuminated manuscripts! beer! force-manipulation games! communal caring! crystallography! sex ed! old-people's homes! the engineers! clerical branch! outreach via art! dance instruction! reincarnation! politics! spies! terrible james bond esque spy films to hide that the spies were really real! lightsaber classes! non-jedi temple residents! U and L leaning prejudice! Alderaan!
Just what would happen if Qui-Gon Jinn were exactly the sort of irresponsible unpleasant adult who should never ever be given a child a lot of fandom suspects he is. His implied treatment of Obi-Wan here can be fairly harrowing, for all that its emotional neglect rather than anything graphic.
The jedi are never depicted as anything less than trying their best, unfortunately no matter how thorough the system tries to be, sometimes people do just fall through the cracks. As was v.nearly the case for Obi-Wan in this verse.
Mostly character driven, though the hints of the greater plot bubbling away underneath all of this glorious worldbuilding and character growth are both ominous and intriguing. The pairing is a hell of a spoiler, but also one that could potentially be a bit of a squick, I don't want to spoil the slowburn of this thing but I do want to give fair warning. Does tumblr offer spoiler tags?
Preventing Order 66 fics:
When Duty is Done - thosenearandfarwars (WIP, 257,000 words)
Wonderful long-form piece - technically a WIP but all installments so far are complete - a what happens next post-Palp's getting his comeuppance, messily. Features Codywan, grief, internalised ableism, jedi order reforming in a very nuanced 'we were this close to the brink' and lost so many people to the war sense *not* the sneaky 'jedi-positive but actually bashing' sense.
Hell I wholeheartedly reccie just about everything this author's ever done tbh!
(This Too Was a Gift (Complete, 69,000 words) is also utterly wonderfully done, and a complete fic in a similar vein, albeit much more focused on the ramifications for individual characters than the ensemble cast of thousands that is Star Wars.)
I Got My Head Checked - frostbitebakery (Complete, 79,000 words)
Codywan Sith!Obi-Wan AU. Cody falls for the hot Sith in the next cell...
Light of the Mists- Snowy Egret Chimes of Kyber, Songs of Kyber, and Anthem of Kyber (Complete, 166,000 words)
This one technically also fits the Obi-Wan's apprenticeship category too. Bit of an epic of, what would happen if Obi-Wan never made it to Bandomeer, and instead trained under a force sect with rather different ideas about how things worked than the modern jedi order?
Supreme Chancellor Obi-Wan Kenobi - stonefreeak (WIP, 113,000 words)
Wonderful crackfic premise done mostly seriously. (WIP)
By an extremely obscure bit of Senate Legalise, Obi-Wan finds himself thrust into the role of Supreme Chancellor. Palpatine is furious.
How A Romance Novel Saved The Galaxy - Ariana Deralte (WIP, 184,000 words)
The galaxy takes a left turn when a popular novel takes the world by storm, and the Jedi and Mandalorians mutually discover their two cultures aren't so different after all...
sanguine - glimmerglanger (complete, 158,000 words)
In which Obi-Wan being a vampire, with all the nasty prejudices that come with being a non-human in the GFFA, somehow saves the galaxy.
Just Go Kill Palpatine - nevertheless_turtle (WIP, 6662 words though this is likely an underestimate due to formatting of a wonderful epistolary/OutsiderPOV social-media-centric chapter)
Just as the title says. Obi-Wan goes and attempts to do just that. Wonderful and hilarious.
The More I Live the More I See this Life is Not About Me - K_R_Closson
Another de-aged Obi-Wan fic. In which post-Melida-Daan suspicious of everyone and everything Kenobi somehow fixes things. Everyone around Obi-Wan is suitably horrified by the news of just what his apprenticeship under Qui-Gon entailed.
Not Quite Sure How to Catergorise these...
This category is the equivalent of the draw marked 'misc.' sorry! Mostly a mix of action/adventure stuff and fics I suspect will turn into, and they prevented order 66 fix-its, but maybe not, with some other truly misc. things thrown in.
backdrop - esama (Complete, 2300 words)
Short and sweet self-contained little tale. Very succinct, but what the author does with those words...
Gunslinger's Paean - Idiot's Array + Homeworld Elegy - Ashcroft_Writes (WIP, 299,000 words)
Epic, what if Obi-Wan post-Rako Hardeen paired up with Cad Bane action adventure tale. Mistrust. Violence. Gunslinging. Espionage. Murder attempts galore!
We Brothers, We Sisters, We Vod'e Few - infinitecompositions(WIP, 322,000 words)
Hell of a fic. WIP. What if canon were to take just a step to the left... Post-Naboo Obi-Wan finds himself recruited for the Shadows branch of the jedi order...
Another epic, cough, can you tell what style I like yet? Uh, starts off as a bit of a dark action adventure romp, rapidly morphs into a detailed dissection of spy-craft, espionage, and galactic politics - but becomes no less tense for it.
Kneading - Threebea O (WIP, 79,000 words)
Manages the miraculous trick of being canon, whilst seeming to be a fluffy bakery AU for a significant chunk of the first few chapters.
Jango/Obi - Jango falls for a local baker whilst hanging out in small town with Boba. Increasingly important to the fate of the galaxy shenanigans inevitably ensue when aforementioned baker turns out to be Obi-Wan Kenobi undercover.
Be Your Love - glimmerglanger (complete, explicit, 9000 words)
I tend not to go for 'real world' AUs but this author's work is so very excellent that I'm reccieing this one - hell I think most of their work is well worth a look through, and every fic-genre they've attempted has proven very fun indeed.
Heed the tags. Explicit Codywan BDSM stuff contained within.
Wizard of the Jundland Wastes - phoenixyfriend (complete, 3200 words)
Obi-Wan on Tatooine, outsiderPOV.
One of many wonderful Star Wars fics this author has written. If this one doesn't catch your fancy, one of their many delightful utterly bizarre premise taken to logical conclusion fics probably will.
Father of the Year (Not) - phoenixyfriend (complete, 2430 words)
Obi-Wan and Jango find out they're each other's soulmates. Mostly they're furious.
Wonderful very pointed skewering of all the usual soulmate and Jango is actually a decent dude tendencies in fic-writing.
Time Travel fics:
I thought I fought this war alone - stonefreeak (Complete, 3783 words)
Wonderful short and sweet Obi-Wan time travelling to his padawan days fix-it.
this is unexpected - MarbleGlove (Complete, 4461 words)
Very succinct and perfect with it time travel what if. Old Ben Kenobi goes back in time and immediately ruins Palpatine's day.
This author tends to be delightful no matter the fandom.
The Sun Swings East - kj_feybarn (Complete, 33,000 words)
Brilliantly done timeloop story of woe and hope. As much about recovery as the initial plot-driven despair. Mind the tags, Obi-Wan is understandably severely depressed throughout much of this fic.
The Making of Mavericks - AppoApples (complete, 146,000 words)
It was extremely difficult to choose just the one time travel fic from this author. Their output is wonderfully varied, don't like their particular take on the Jedi Order and/or the Mandalorians in this fic? Pick another, and odds are they'll have explored the concept from precisely the opposite angle.
This author has a wonderful exploratory sense of, okay okay, so how do we fix this thing/how do we make it worse?
In this case, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Cody, and Rex time travel to the past. This creates broad sweeping changes to the timeline, not always for the better.
The Desert Storm (complete, 1,144,599 words) & Rise and Fall series (WIP, 396,000 words) - Blue_Sunshine (WIP)
Wonderful epic-length time-travel fic. Highly recommended. Technically a WIP, but what there is already is well worth the time.
Ben Kenobi, now Nasaade, in utter furious despair finds himself back in time, pre, well, everything. He decides to take matters into his own hands and change things.
Gorgeous character-work, where by the end of the piece the characters are all in very different places than where they started out. And you utterly believe the growth (positive and negative) that got them there.
Draws from both legends and canon in a bit of a hodgepodge approach - despite drawing from a few of the more leaning towards the jedi were the bad guys sources in legends, impressively manages to tread a nuanced stance on, okay so what if the jedi and mandalorians did decide to start reforming in the face of this grave existential threat that's been brought to their attention?
Wonderful utterly enviable pacing - I know this one's extremely long. But at no point do you ever feel/notice the length when reading this thing.
It Was Another Time and I Another Man - Pell_Binterhol (WIP, 196,000 words)
Multiple Kenobis time travelling. Absolute chaos for absolutely everyone else; fellow time travellers, fellow Kenobis, and plotting Sith alike.
the massive machinery of hope - Killbothtwins (Complete, 150,000 words)
Obi-Wan travels back to his padawan days and annoys everyone else into helping him save the day. Wonderful sense of wry humour throughout this fic.
Living Memory - elsa3beth (WIP, 363,000 words)
Epic very detailed wonderful fic detailing just what General Kenobi would do if he had to fight the war again.
Deals with just what could happen if Anakin had ever had to face his fellow jedi with even a few of his flaws laid bare, and the fallout.
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan, just barely managing to hold himself together, fresh out of the middle of his exile to Tatooine, is desperately playing four-dimensional chess against Palpatine and trying to use the awful structure of the Republic's Army to save both the Jedi and the Clones.
The 212th Attack Battalion's Guide to Saving the Galaxy by Accident - antigrav_vector & quarra (WIP, 783,000 words)
Long, character driven fic that's an incredibly fun take on just what might happen if Obi-Wan and a bunch of Ghost Company stumbled into Jaster Mereel's True Mandalorians and get themselves adopted. Heed the tags wrt pairings!
All the complications that come from being an adult stuck as an apparent child ensue. From being squicked out about being a kid again, to having other people being concerned that a kid is behaving like an adult, to just... time travel complications, kidnapping, force esoterica, and fighting a small war.
Plenty of Jedi thoughtfully staring at this strange miniature jedi master, lots of Mandalorians being both stunned and horrified by these tiny soldiers, and Dooku/Sifo-Dyas being a surprisingly lovely central pairing.
Not Qui-Gon friendly in the least, and in this verse you can't help but feel he very much deserves it.
Suicidal Misunderstandings - nevertheless_turtle (WIP, 67,000 words)
Obi-Wan spends much of this fic convinced he's hallucinating and on a bad spice-trip. The trigger warning is very much in the name here.
That said, wonderful, often hilarious time travelling Obi-Wan fic, as the jedi desperately try to work out 1) what's wrong with Obi-Wan, and 2) how to stop Palpatine.
Re-Entry (Complete, 568,000 words) and Re-Entry Journey of the Whills (WIP, 889,000 words) - flamethrower
Fair warning, might turn into a deadlink fairly soon. The author's stuff is in the process of being transferred to another archive. Not a big deal (though fandom being a collective arse is, ffs), as with many older fics this one has moved home fairly often! (Squidgeworld.)
Wonderful absolute epic time travelling Obi-Wan Kenobi fic. Even if you're not a fan of the central Qui/Obi pairing it's written from a very believable perspective, of you can see precisely how these two adults got there, and an extremely enjoyable read with it.
Starts off as a fairly character-driven piece, as the plot slowly builds into something extremely ominous indeed, though once the plot momentum gets going ye gods it gets going.
Another case of technically a series that's a WIP, but every individual story that's up is complete and a satisfying individual whole.
Filled with all the things I love in a Star Wars fic, Obi-Wan getting to be awesome, force esoterica, Obi-Wan getting to be a little shit, plotty plot, the jedi getting to be nuanced and awesome, canon and fanon star wars lore all over the place, and plenty of action adventure and gorgeous character work.
I don't want to go into too much spoilery detail here, but suffice it to say this one is a classic in the fandom for a reason, and deservedly so.
Warning that the dark stuff in this fic can get dark, the level of whump Obi-Wan endures goes all the way up to extremely creepy Palpatine-torture on par with the Ventress/Sith-mask/Alpha-17 situation. It's never gratuitous with it, but in places this fic is explicit, at turns in both the fun porny way and the whump sense.
Star Wars crossovers and fusions:
Alas this section will be shorter than I'd like it to be - unlike a lot of other sci-fi fandoms Star Wars fandom seems to shy away from crossover fic by and large. There's both less of it, and what there is seems to get a hell of a lot less interaction than it would in a different fandom. Not guilt-tripping, again, I am very very guilty of failing to interact myself, just a weird, 'huh, where are all the crossovers?' thing I've noticed.
Rouge Handed - nevertheless_turtle (complete, 2190 words)
As the name hopefully implies this one's kinda sorta a Moulin Rouge crossover. Ish. In that it's firmly set wholly in the GFFA.
Delightful little crackfic.
The weeping stone - Gabriel4Sam (complete, 6965 words)
A wonderful crossover with The Mummy that somehow manages to thread the needle, hitting the humorous tone of those films perfectly whilst simultaneously making you feel very sad indeed for Obi-Wan.
A Star to Steer By - dogmatix, norcumi (first fic in the series is complete, second a WIP, 109,000 words)
Absolutely wonderful Stargate crossover/fusion - it somehow manages to be both a crossover and a fusion at once.
Largely told from Jack's POV, the Jedi are symbionts, with all the misunderstandings that would imply, given the SGC are much more used to dealing with malevolent parasitic Goa'uld than benevolent symbiosis.
Lost Jedi - Augusta Pembroke (complete)
A Velvet Goldmine crossover fic. Curt Wild meets Qui-Gon Jinn, and things get complicated. Qui/Curt with implied unfulfilled Qui/Obi feelings.
All the unhealthy messy relationship stuff the Velvet Goldmine tag and the age of the fic implies is probably present and correct here.
Qui-Gon ends trapped on the wrong side of the galaxy, he finds Curt who's force sensitive, and trains him to help him get back home to Obi-Wan... Things get messy.
Snow and Cinder - MrsHamill (explicit, complete, 16,000 words)
The pre-requisite wonderfully done Highlander/Methos crossover fic. Obi-Wan hangs out with the ROG for a while post-Naboo in a bid to get over a falling out with Qui-Gon Jinn and work through his own messy feelings on the matter. The main pairing is Qui/Obi as many older Master&Apprentice archive era fics are.
All you really need to know about Methos is he's very old, and very cynical. He's literally seen and done it all.
This one doesn't fall into the all too easy to fall into trap of having Methos, understandably an extremely old and cunning immortal being so much better at anything and everything than everyone else around him that it stops being fun and starts bashing the other-verse in the crossover, for which I'm extremely grateful. It's a difficult balance to tread and this author manages it wonderfully. (I say this from first-hand, I have tried and failed to airdrop this character into other sci-fi fandoms you'd think he'd work well in, fic-author perspective rather than as a crit of anyone else's work!)
Look at the publishing dates please.
A few of these fics pre-date Attack of the Clones. They were written in the 90s.
If I find out someone's been bashing an author for outdated terminology or characterisation or for not using the current 2022 language, or a character the fic pre-dates in a fic they've not looked at for over twenty years, or how they wrote the central pairing in the era when the punchline to every single joke in Hollywood was 'haha they're gay!' I... Well... I won't be writing another one of these rec lists. Which isn't much of a threat I realise, but please, be civil.
I could probably easily fill a couple more of these lists tbh, and get more specific with it genre-wise... But as a general, here's a few fics I remember fondly often. I can feel myself getting neurotically 'this has to be perfect' at this thing, so, this'll do for now.

You can post things for a prompt later in the week, but not before.
You can participate in just one day or the entire week if you want!
No sign ups required, just tag your fics properly so that we can showcase them!
You can @ this blog so I can see it and reblog!
FAQ
What kind of fics are allowed?
Ship fics, family fics, platonic ships are all welcome. Everything MUST be properly tagged.
I have an idea for a Dreamworks au can I do that?
Yes! It’s only called Disney AU week because it sounds good! If you’ve got ideas from Dreamworks, Pixar, or even Studio Ghibli they are more than welcome to be a part of the event!
I can’t do the entire week but I want to do certain days, is that okay?
Absolutely! Make sure to post it the day of or after, don’t post it before the day arrives!
If you have any other questions feel free to send an ask!
Can i do just DP or just DC instead of DPxDC?
absolutely! This may be an event for the DPxDC server but that doesn't mean you have to do DPxDC! If you're more comfortable writing DP content--go for it! Same for DC content! Please still tag the works! We would love to see what you come up with!

A spin off of the gen ask earlier, and this may just be personal bias, but I feel like theres been a rise in genfic recently. I'm thinking specifically of the minecraft youtubers/Batman/TLoU/The Mandalorian (just a rise in star wars gen in general I think). Its not really something anyone tracks but think I've noticed more and more gen ships, and not background ships but primary ships, on the top ao3 ship list.
Hey! It's an interesting question. I'm doing some Gen stats that I'll release soon, but I'll share a preview now that partly answers your question:
Tumblr media
The percent of AO3 works each year that were tagged Gen was greatest when AO3 had just started (~2009). That's true whether looking at all works that have the tag Gen or at works that ONLY use Gen and no other category tags. It also depends when you're counting from; the average percent of Gen has risen a little since the lowest point in 2019, but there's not an obvious upward trend.
That said, you make a good point that there are several recent popular fandoms that have a bunch of Gen. I listed the fandom with the most Gen for each year in the above graph -- it starts out being mostly the same as the biggest fandom overall (usually Supernatural, early on). But it's interesting to see the rise of Minecraft/Dream SMP more recently, which is a big fandom but not right at the top of the rankings. It's just got A LOT of Gen. (Also interesting to see Original Work as a top producer in 2023!)
I can't easily fully answer your question about whether there's been an overall increase in bigger Gen-heavy fandoms lately. But another thing I looked at was the big fandoms that have Gen as their top category (more Gen than M/M, etc) -- these are all of the fandoms with over 10K works that have more Gen than anything else:
Tumblr media
A bunch of the fandoms here are relatively recent or have had recent surges in popularity due to related media coming out. And lots of them are ranked pretty high overall. So I think it's not surprising if you and others are coming across more Gen fic these days!
Watch for more Gen stats soon. :)

ENCYCLOPEDIA - There is a name for this ideology: Entropolism. A faith in and desire to accelerate the spread of pale across the world, until humanity has reached what its adherents call the 'rest state' of humanity, the final reconciliation of past, present, and future in timeless spirit...
What it says on the tin! 2023, and August 1st, 2023 in particular unless goodreads lied to us, is the 10th anniversary of the release of the Estonian paperback of Robert Kurvitz's Püha ja õudne lõhn | Sacred and terrible air. 's a good book. It could do with some love, and it would be nice to celebrate it. So!
RULES
what am I, the SRV? Just create something novel-related and post it on social media on August 1st. If you feel like using the #hot entropolic summer tag too, it'll make it easier to see all the works made for the fest and promote them in a final masterpost. Oh and also: have fun!
anything goes, for real. No format limitations, no content limitations. Art, fic, fanmixes, meta, webweaving, 'crossovers' with other parts of Elysium, speculative works about names on lists, gen, ship, heavy themes, mazovian coffeeshop AUs, follow your heart.
book's here.

Do you know the history of why the phandom names ships the way they do, and why there are ship names for platonic/familial "ships" like badger cereal?
So anyone Gen Z mighttt not remember this, but "back in the day," coming up with fun little ship names between characters was actually a rather popular 00's trend. It didn't spread across every fandom, but many, DP included, partook because they thought it was cute.
Of course, these ship names are actually impractical so the trend didn't last that long before it died.
But because DP came to be right at the height of this, and because we're such an old fandom with a lot of longevity in terms of its members, we've kept this tradition alive just cuz it's normal for us now. Like, I've been reading DP for a decade so remembering the popular ship names is nothing to me. But I can see how it would be confusing to new people who aren't used to it!
As far as platonic "ships" like badger cereal, you have to keep in mind that there was no way to tag relationships that weren't true ships on ffn. AO3 didn't exist back then, and the & symbol we use now to code plantonic/found-family relationships wasn't a thing. So throwing a little platonic name like "badger cereal" in the description of your fic was a quick and easy way to let your audience know, "hey my fic is going to focus on the relationship between these two characters but don't worry, it's not going to end up romantic/sexual!" Which, especially for Danny&Vlad, is definitely something writers wanted to communicate to potential readers!

Ao3 tips:
- Install a skin.   This makes it less scary to read ao3 in public, and hurts your eyes way less.   I recommend trying out Snow Blue, Reversi, and Dusted Off, but if you don’t like any of them you can use the Allmighty Skin Wizard to make your own skin.
- If you do use a skin, CRANK THAT FUCKING FONT SIZE UP.   Your sleep schedule won’t thank me: it’ll get you reading longer.
- Consider installing a remove kudos button.   I’m serious.  I’ve had so much more fun both writing and reading fic ever since I removed the kudos counter from ao3.    It really isn’t the indicator of quality you think it is, (more like an indicator if the fic has the fandom’s OTP in it) and you can still sort by kudos if you’d like!
-  Bookmark your searches.    I have a search bookmarked for all of my fandoms that excludes my NOTPs and all the tropes I dislike.   If I’m in a rare mood where I want to read for a pairing I’m ambivalent about, I can always re-include them.   It isn’t passing judgement on the ship/trope (unless you want it to be >:) ), its just saving future you some times.
- User subscribe to your favorite authors! “But Tenko!  They post a lot of shit I don’t care about!”   Thats the thing:   you can use email filters to only get notified for stuff you like.    One of my favorite authors posts Re:Zero a lot, which I have never watched and have no desire to (no judgement to the fans, the art style is not my thing).  But ever since I blocked the keyword, I have mostly forgotten that that author posts anything but the fandoms I care about.    I never subscribe to actual works, just authors.
- Make a second account for commenting if you feel shy!   Second accounts are explicitly allowed and encouraged by the ao3 team.  If that helps you feel more comfy chatting with your favorite authors, whats stopping you?
- Bookmarks are your friend.   Bookmark every fic you could actually see yourself rereading- then when you are in the mood to reread fic, you can search your own personal rec list, curated by you!
- Ao3 savior, while a bit complicated to set up, can help you block those ships/tags you don’t want to see under any circumstances.   Goodbye! X reader one-shot collections!   I don’t have to scroll past you anymore.
- If you want some good old F/F (or M/F depending on your fandom) thats usually relegated to a background pairing, don’t use OTP:True.   Go to exclude, categories, and then exclude M/M and Other.  Bam! You get both Gen and F/F works about that character.
Thats it for today, a drabble is precisely 100 words, byeeee!

Introducing the M*A*S*H Fic Olympics!
ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL!
Hello everyone, and welcome to the M*A*S*H Fic Olympics, a week-long fandom-wide writing festival that aims to highlight and appreciate the amazing work of writers involved in the M*A*S*H fandom!
This festival is open to all ships (and gen work, of course), and will run Monday, July 3, through Sunday, July 9.
Your organizers are Jay (Jaybirbb on AO3 and @faggothawkeyepierce on Tumblr) and Parker (AMRV_5 on AO3 and @amrv-5 on Tumblr). Feel free to contact [email protected] with questions!
request list || prompt list
HOW IT WORKS:
Each day of the week-long festival will have a specific theme. Authors will have from now until the night before each theme to craft a fic to fit and post it to the AO3 collection M*A*S*H Fic Olympics (find it here!).
All of the posted works for a given day will fall under its theme. The fics can be submitted publicly or anonymously, and as individual works or chapters of a single piece.
Works submitted to the M*A*S*H Fic Olympics collection on Archive of Our Own will be posted across seven days (the moderators will approve each fic on its theme day!). The links to the AO3 works will then be posted to this blog, moderated by yours truly.
Each day’s theme will be provided at the bottom of this post. A list of prompts for potential inspiration will also be provided.
As another fun way to engage with the M*A*S*H writing community, we will also be accepting fic requests to be filled out during the event! Find out more here!
We encourage readers to review and share the works once they’re posted so they can be experienced by as many people as possible!
The event will begin on Monday, July 3rd and end on Sunday, July 9th. Participants should submit their fics by 5 p.m. CDT (10 p.m. GMT) the night before each relevant theme (meaning first submissions are due July 2nd, and last ones July 8th!). That said, we’ll also accept late submissions—the more fic, the better!
FAQ:
"Do I have to follow the theme?"
-Yes! This will make it a lot easier for us to organize on which day we’ll post the fics. Plus, it’s the point of the fic olympics!
"Do I have to follow a prompt?"
-No! The prompts are there for you to use as inspiration, but you can change them up or totally ignore them. As long as you follow the theme, everything’s good!
"Can I submit more than one fic?"
-Absolutely! Write and submit as many works as you want.
"How should I format my fics?"
-You can post the daily fills as chapters in a single work, or as individual works; it’s up to you!
"How do I submit to a collection?"
-When you create a new work, you’ll find a menu in the “Associations” box that allows you to post your fic to a collection. Enter “M*A*S*H Fic Olympics” in the entry box, and it should allow you to select the collection and post to it!
"How do I request a fic? How do I fill a request?"
-Everything you need to know should be in this post!
"I have more questions! Help!!"
-Do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any other questions.
RULES:
-This challenge is open to all ships, as well as gen work.
-Canon-compliant, post-canon, pre-canon and AU are all fair game!
-Each day of the week-long challenge has an associated theme. To participate, write something incorporating that theme and post it to the M*A*S*H Fic Olympics collection on AO3.
-No maximum or minimum word count.
-Please tag your work properly, so everyone’s experience can be safe and enjoyable! The moderators may ask you to add a tag to your work after you submit it. We also reserve the right to refuse fics until they are properly tagged.
-Remember to be kind! Any participants who engage in hostile behavior to other participants may be removed from participation. We’re all friends here :)
-Have fun and be yourself <3
THEMES AND SCHEDULE:
Monday, July 3 (Due July 2): Letters
Tuesday, July 4 (Due July 3): Weather
Wednesday, July 5 (Due July 4): Horror
Thursday, July 6 (Due July 5): Orange
Friday, July 7 (Due July 6): Injury

where is the line between Fan Fiction and Original Work
I'm currently writing an OC/ OC ship fic that's also self-insert (both OCs are my self-inserts). It takes place in an established fandom universe and one of the OCs is a fan-kid of a canon character.
But, its also so far removed from canon that it has very little to do with the original source material.
The OC that's the fan kid, is the fan kid of two canon characters that are themselves Next Gen characters, so they're already separated from the main cast by one generation, and then my fankid OC is one more generation removed from that.
In addition, it takes place in a location that, while it does exist in canon, has not been used in canon since the late-2000s/early 2010s.
Should I tag this as "Original Work" since there's so much that's been removed from canon? Or should I keep all the fandom tags and just prepare for swarms of angry fans to jump down my throat for daring to post OC self-insert fan fic that doesn't even include the central characters?
(I am old enough for remember fanfiction.net in 2004 when ANY fic that included an OC got bullied, I hear the fan fic cultural landscape has changed since then, but I'm still afraid to post my OC fics publicly)
--
If the setting is from some canon then the work is still in that fandom.
Whether people will be grumpy about OC/OC depends on the particular fandom's culture. On AO3, it's easy to filter by ship tag and just go straight to the canon character/canon character stuff.

Here are the prompts for Finn Week 2023 (September 17-23)!
Reminder that you can pick and choose any prompts you like - for example it's fine to draw fanart of a "general" prompt, and if you really like one of the art prompts, it would be fine to write a fanfic for it (or make any other type of fanwork!).
Audience challenges are for the whole week and you're welcome to download the graphic provided, check off the challenges you've completed, and upload yourself to show your progress :).
If you have any questions, please feel free to send us an ask, or join the Finn Discord (ask for an invite).
Full list of rules, and prompts and challenges as plain text under the cut:
Rules
Any type of content focusing on appreciating Finn is encouraged, fics, fanart, gifs, videos, meta, etc.
Gen, any shipping, nsfw, etc are all allowed, but please tag appropriately on Tumblr (eg. nsfw, gore) and ensure any 18+ content or fics over 500 words are under a cut. If you’re linking to a fic on an external site like AO3 with its own tagging system, then a cut is not necessary.
There’s no minimum word count/level of polish, or minimum number of days. Post for one day, post for all seven days! It’s up to you. Sketches, drafts, or other pieces you might decide to work on more later are also fine.
Late posts (not during the week or on the associated theme day) are also very ok
Please tag with #finnweek2023 if you want to be reblogged here. NSFW posts sometimes get hidden in the tags, so you can also @ us if you notice we haven’t reblogged your post. There will also be an AO3 collection available closer to the event week. You are also welcome to tag your audience challenge posts and we'll reblog those too!

More Lucienne Fic Recs
Part 2 to Morphienne and gen Lucienne centric fic recs, this is a non-exhaustive list of other Lucienne rarepairs!
Gaulcienne
This is Why I Don't Leave the House by @zorawitch has to be one of my most revisited and beloved fics not just for this pairing, but for this fandom ever. It's the one that actually hooked me for this ship, it's a human au but everyone is written - just spot on and it's both romantic as hell but with some serious drama too, the entire family is in this, even Despair actually gets moments to shine which is rare it seems. Dr*ml!ng is in it but very very briefly, like it's objectively the Side Pairing Where One Is On the Phone For 5 Minutes in the background for once, also contains very side (but weirdly cute) Desunity. I seriously want to turn this fic into heroin and put an IV to inject it right into my veins. I love it so much (Obviously) and you'll see why if you read it. Descriptions: A+, dialogue A+ character work A ++++.
In Places No One Will Find by starsniper explores the grief of losing Jessamy from Lucienne's POV and Gault is the Best as per usual. This broke my heart in all the best ways, it needs SO much more love.
Obliterate All Prior Things by The_KickIt_Domain is. It is one of the most beautifully written fics I've ever SEEN. Everything about the way Lucienne and Gault are written and the sense of history between them is 10/10. The yearning and the tenderness is off the charts. Definitely a favorite
Daydreams by james is a sensual and beautifully written snippet of domestic Gaulcienne and I adore it.
Beautiful by melime tender fluff with lush description.
"This is my wife..." by @honeyteacakes is just. Short but so so sweet and feels like a look into Matthew and Lucienne's bond as well as hers and Gault's relationship. They also have a bit of fun at his expense lol
dreaming weather by Anonymous way too short but HOT and poetic smut.
Sea Changes by Cafephile FLAWLESS addition to monsterfuckertober. Gault brings back an old nightmare form with tentacles for fun and a good time is had by all:) hot and lovely.
Calliene (Calliope and Lucienne)
@two-hands-toward-the-sun is literally carrying this ship tag on their shoulders and all of their Calienne fics are good but here's some highlights:
I carried this for years plus it's sequel, I can feel the sun whenever you're near are just. *chefs kiss* absolutely great exploration of them trying to deal with their trauma and sometimes competing needs together.
you love each other until the city becomes beautiful , heart of my heart, come my way and stay my honey are all pure quality fluff. Shoot this serotonin straight into my veins.
Corinthienne (Cori × Lucienne)
I haven't read much fic for this pairing so its gonna be short lol, but I couldn't pass these by
Insatiable by honeyteacakes is incredibly tragically steamy and beautifully written.
Quiet in the Library by starkraving is just. MWAH. Very smutty and full of Feelings, it packs such a good punch I can't oversell it.
Just Between Us by onyourleft084 Lucienne tries to domme the Corinthian into behaving and staying in line and it works...for awhile. Honestly I don't feel like I'm selling it right though, just by that simple description. You will feel things about this and them by the end, I promise. At least I did.

1, 5 and 6 for the fic ask game?
1.favorite fic you read this year?: *sighs* BONES OF BLACK MARROW (M/M, rated E, Dirk Strider/Jake English, 82/82) - jesus christ this fucking fic. i think about it to this day from time to time. think im gonna reread it soon. i fell in love with the crazy html use and the characterisation of both dirk and jake, but ESPECIALLY jake. hes so good here, unhinged an whimsical. obviously there are mature themes so proceed with caution and read the tags.
5.longest fic you read this year?: Defragmentation (Gen, rated M, platonic, 80/?) - found it through dave & dirk tag on ao3 (bc i needed some good ole sibling bonding sue me) and fell in love. basically sburb glitches out and sends all the characters into unholy amalgamation of multiple timelines. dirk has to figure out what the shit is going on, while being in two places at once - both as bro strider in texas before the game and in the medium, god-tiered and traversing though shattered paradox space. its great. and its fucking long, i mean 355,472 words long, and its ongoing. the great fucking gatsby is 47,094 words, for the comparison. so its a little bit of a commitment, but i cannot recommend it enough!
6.shortest fic you read this year?: We're Parallel Sinking Ships (Gen, rated T, platonic, 1/1) - another dirk and dave strider feels fic! im a sucker for fics that explore how they manage their relationship as brothers with their baggage after the game. this one is short and sweet, dirk tells dave a story from his childhood when he almost drowned and hallucinated his bro.

Toastystats: F/F, F/M, and M/M on AO3
I'm starting to post my deep dive stats that started out as me looking into "F/F vs. M/M on AO3" -- it has turned out to be really useful and interesting to include F/M in most of these analyses (I'd like to also look more at other categories eventually; see further discussion about nonbinary characters). Here are some of the topics I'll be covering: Length, Ratings & Smut, Dark content, Tags & tropes, Growth rate, and Case studies of parallel-ish ships of different genders.
You can read the intro & fanwork length chapter now, and more will be posted soon! You can also listen to me discuss a bunch of the data on the latest @fansplaining episode, Femstats February.
Below are some excerpts of the fanwork length chapter -- but please click through to AO3 for elaboration/clarification/corrections, as well as for descriptions of the images.
---
Tumblr media
(Terminology: "F/F-focused" means I filtered out every other relationship category else except "Gen," so as to remove ambiguity, and similar for F/M- and M/M-focused.)
A few observations:
These breakdowns are a lot more similar than I’d expected. There are differences, but they’re not overwhelming. It’s not like F/F is mostly just drabbles.
F/F does have the highest proportion of short fic, followed by F/M, and then M/M...
But the long fic end of the scale isn’t what I expected at all! M/M is the least likely to have works over 50K words (this graph doesn't actually show the decimal points due to lack of space, but M/M only has 2.0% of its works above 50K words, while F/F has 2.4% over 50K). And F/M is the most likely to have [works over 50K words]!
....Next, I wanted to look at reader response to long fic.... First, let's look at the word count breakdown for the works with the most kudos...:
Tumblr media
We can see that, probably unsurprisingly, many of the works that receive the most kudos are long -- but I was surprised how strong that bias is. Nearly half of these popular works in the F/F and F/M categories are over 50K+ words (I -- or someone else -- should follow up by further subdividing the "over 50K" category, but I haven't done so yet; for now I only used the same word count buckets that I used previously.). Surprising to me is that M/M has a lot more shorter works that get a lot of kudos; only around 1/3 of the M/M works with the most kudos have over 50K words. I'd be curious to hear any theories about why this is.
....Okay, so lots of popular fic is long -- not too surprising. But now let's flip things around. instead of looking at how long popular fic is, let's look at how much reader feedback long fic gets, and see if any category clearly gets the most or least feedback.
For this, I took a very specific slide of [long fic]: works 100K words to 101K words long. I did that because I wanted to compare long fic of the same length across the different categories. But these specific numbers are therefore not accurate for most definitions of "long fic," and should not be taken too seriously -- hence the asterisks on the following slides (Edit to clarify: I did also look at a couple other long slices to check that these general patterns seem to hold... but I haven't confirmed it for all long fic). I did this just to try to get a rough sense of the ranking or the categories. Let's take a look:
Tumblr media
Wow! I was surprised to see that F/F averages the most kudos! And that F/M gets the least of all these types of feedback by quite a lot!
Is this because readers don't seek out F/M as much as the other works? Or is it because F/M readers don't tend to leave as much feedback after they read something? To answer this, we need to look at the number of hits (views) that each category gets:
Tumblr media
Fascinating! F/F long fic gets the largest number of hits on average. (Maybe this is because F/F works are the rarest, so more people seeking out long F/F fic view each fanwork, on average, as compared to the other categories?) And we can see that F/M long fic gets the fewest hits per fanwork. (Again, maybe this is because there are a lot of long F/M fics out there, so there's less scarcity, and fewer people view each one?)
Okay, so to follow up on the question of whether F/M readers are less likely to leave feedback after viewing a work -- we can compare rates of feedback. For each work I calculated kudos/hits (I actually looked at kudos per 1000 hits to make the numbers easier to think about), and then I took the median of all those numbers to find average feedback rate. I did the same for comments and bookmarks:
Tumblr media
The main takeaway here is that the reader feedback rates are remarkably similar. (Again, this is based on one narrow slice of long fic, so I wouldn't take the small differences here seriously.) More people view F/F long fic on average, and fewer people view F/M long fic -- but the rate at which they leave feedback appears to be roughly the same across all categories.
