ive been drawing "seriously" (aka actually studying, copying styles etc) since college so for like 14 years? I don't like this question because it feels like i should be more impressive 😂 i wont pretend that i spent all those years studying, i mostly was fucking around

there are so many resources out there but best at explaining most basic basics is proko on yt (its most accessible) I'm sorry i wont take responsibility and give you a concrete advice because you ask any self taught artist most of them will tell you "idk just do what makes sense and do it A Lot"

which is yeah, not a speedrun strat for getting good and youll inevitably wish you did some things differently and feel like you "wasted time"

im not good at giving advice tbh its always "just do" lol

study on the regular and things will stick, find a resource that you enjoy and that makes sense to you and study and draw what you love in between

my tablet had been a small gifted wacom bamboo for like 12 years, i recently bought a small intuous (and scratched a hole in it thats almost as bad as my bamboo one so im mad af abt that but thats a dif story)

i dont draw on paper as much as i used to when i had a regular job (which ironically was my first OP/ ginsanji era ♥️) but i do studies on paper, they are nothing to write home about, just working on better volume understanding and line control (speaking of volume understanding, you need to understand how to think in 3Dwhen drawing, no i cant give you a concrete link to a source for that idk it myself)

ive been drawing forever honestly. i've always been really into it. im fifteen so thatd be like 12 years. and obviously i wasnt always studying it super seriously or anything. idk. my art isnt perfect by any means. i just dont really post the shitty pieces lmao. i struggle with sm stuff and will be continuing to study probably till the day i cant hold a pencil anymore lol. (i draw too much, my hand hurts ;w;) its a never ending process and honestly thats why i love it sm.

as for anatomy i think the main thing to keep in mind is that anatomy and just drawing people in general is really hard. i heard this in this old video about how pixar used to do 3d animation is that the reason they didnt do animations of humans for so long is because we ourselves have very specefic ideas of what a human looks like. i think this also applies to art. which is a really long way of saying, trust the process.

i use photos personally! you can find a lot on pinterest but there are a couple things id keep in mind when it comes to photos people edit their bodies sometimes so their proportions so be careful, it will defeat the purpose of the study if the bodies inaccurate.

idk here are some that might be good for starting off. dancers and people like that are super helpful. remember to not to focus too much on the lines but more copying down the shapes,

for hands i would just look at your own hands and try to capture them quickly. i say quickly mainly bc i shake a lot lmao, maybe youre different. or you could just be smart and take a picture of your hand but im very lazy and dont like getting up to grab my phone.

for art style id just save stuff that inspire you. could be animations, comics, album covers, cool photos, just stuff that gives you like vibes. literally ANYTHING.

like, omg this is making me think of a cool idea rn!! save it! even if you cant execute it now you can always execute it in the future when your skills are more developed :)

style studies are also helpful! try copying art you like, seeing different peoples techniques however some things to keep in mind with this are

you might accidently copy down an artists mistakes or bad habits without realizing it so try to have some variety in your artists

dont post the art. some people are okay with tracing but the vast majority of artists dont like it and it makes them uncomfortable. so id just like keep it in your sketchbook or whatever :) better safe than sorry.

anyway ah this is so longgggg! sry im so bad at being concise lol. theres probably a lot of youtube videos that could help you with this stuff if you want more explanation. the channel ive been watching a lot in since this summer is sketches of shay. she makes a variety of stuff but her art studies and resources are also very helpful :)

hey roach, i've been fiddling w/ one of my specbio species and, if its cool w/ you, i need your opinion on smth

for one of my species, the one thats similar to a gorgonopsid, i'm debating on whether or not to keep the enlarged canines OR potentially go with split jaws/mandibles as lower jaw instead (maybe adjusting the tongue in turn but idk-)

(closest animal that has the 'jaw style' i might be thinking of is goblin shark, but i dont think thats quite it disofsdf)

OOOOO fuck yes, with something like this id consider what the animal would be using this hardware for. with long saber teeth the animal would be using those to quickly stab and kill prey, going for the throat and punturing vital organs. this is something you see in cats, who have long and thin fangs (i believe either the clouded leopard or the snow leopard has the longest fangs relative to its size). whereas something like a split jaw, which you dont really see in mammals but you do see in things like snakes, would be used to grab onto very large areas but might not be able to hold on as tightly. (also, the goblin shark type slingshot jaws are seen VERY often in fish, as well as doing things like sucking up prey, cuz fish can only really use their mouths to grab onto things and having jaws you can shoot out of your face and snatch prey out of the air is VERY beneficial in something as thick as water. also dragonfly nymphs have FUCKING CRAZY JAWS. GO LOOK THEM UP)

SO kind of a word vomit, but studying what type of animals have that kind of jaw and what they use it for is the most helpful thing you can do. and also, saber teeth are fairly easy to evolve. its not something crazy and highly specific like making wings out of hands. and a split jaw would probably be something inherited from a distant ancestor, which begs the question of why did the ancestor have a split jaw?

i like both options and i think if you got weird enough with it, you could even manage to mash em together and have some crazy ass fold out fang tri jaw nonsense that has no business even existing. but its your playground, go crazy, go stupid aaaaa. im actually also in the process of making the mouths of some of my animals weird and fucked up funny enough (not the hexapods, but marine animals :)). for weird unique jaw structures id highly recommend researching arthropods, especially for mouths with multiple different parts.

how did i decide a senior high school strand/college degree/career?:

unfortunately, i cannot help on on the High School Strand kasi 'di ko naabutan yung strand system in high school VSJHFVKSJDHGSD. my batch graduated right when they started doing strands, so i never got to experience it, huhu, nor do i understand the process (even after my younger sibling has tried many times to explain it to me, minsan bobo ako jVKJSHF)

but maybe my next stuffs can help out :D

in choosing a college course i.....really kinda just picked what i wanted to do. and this was a huge privilege i'll always be grateful to my family for, whatever i wanted to study, they'd support me. the courses i applied for in diff schools were the following, in order of first to last choice: Creative Writing, English/Comparative Literature, and BA Psychology (tho disclaimer: i only put this last one on application forms cuz it was needed, i didnt actually want to study that very much HAHA, it was writing or lit for me all the way)

on why i wanted those courses is....idk it's another thing that i think is also a privilege. ive always known that ive wanted to write, to study writing, and to pursue it later on. ive been writing and reading ever since i was a kid and i was pretty deadset on it from an early age.

i know that a lot of people dont have a similar experience tho sometimes, but i guess my advice for how to pick a college course is: what can you see yourself enjoying learning more and more and more about?

ofc, this gets a bit more complicated if ur family is strict and will only allow u to take certain degrees huhu. but if uve got the freedom to choose, i'd say dont just think about what you like, but what you'd like to learn about.

cuz college is work. it's a LOT of work. and while liking something can help, that Like can fall flat when youve gotta be doing all the requirements. it helps if, whatever u choose, it's something uve got a craving for knowledge for.

and honestly, if you dont know what to get or if you choose something and realize it isnt for you, thats okay too! you can shift courses in college! or if you want to learn more, you can take a minor degree! sometimes your first choice wont work, and thats okay. you can choose again and see what fits.

how i chose my career was a bit different from this cuz....the ph job market is in shambles JHVASFVASKJFHASVKFJAH

i currently work as a copywriter and despite the stresses, i really enjoy my job! but this wasnt my first job (my first job fucking sucked so bad that i resigned within a month) and i didnt land it straight out of college (i was out of college for over a year before landing my current gig). i got lucky with my current job, bc when it comes to careers, it's a lot harder to have a choice.

of course, all the jobs i was looking into were writing related: content writer, SEO writer, scriptwriter, etc etc. but theres a lot of companies out there that treat writers like absolute shit, a lot of companies who wont get back to you after an interview, a lot of companies who wont take you. i didnt choose my career so much as get lucky in the job market gacha (lol), but my advice here is that like...search within the industries you think you'd, at best, enjoy working in or, at minimum, can endure being in

which is a very depressing statement, i know.....life is tough, but there are good jobs out there with ppl who wont treat u like crud. if i got lucky, i can only hope more ppl can get this kind of experience too

and like i said in the college bit, if u find urself in a job u dont vibe with and u have the privilege/stability to be able to quit it:.....just quit it

a lot of these life choices are made to be really Big by schools and teachers and everybody really, but you dont have to get it right the first time. you can start over, it's alright, youve got your whole life ahead of you. if your life allows u the privilege and freedom to choose and discover new things, dont hold yourself back

like, legit, just fake it. the delivery portion of debate, to me, is basically theatre and acting HVKJHVFKJAHFAS

imagine the most confident speaker uve ever seen urself, maybe somebody so confident na nainis ka sa kaniya, and do exactly that:

get that good posture, make motions with your hands because this helps get people's attention. if eye contact makes u nervous (it makes me so nervous huhu) u can blur/unfocus ur eyes, U Do Not See It

maintain a good rhythm with your speaking too. speak with moderate loudness and emphases for the less important, and then idiin mo in the bits na gusto mo parang mic drop moment ahfjshfa (which is usually saved best for the latter portion of an argument, but good to pepper it in as well thru the whole thing with ur most important pieces of info)

next time i go to sleep i hope i wake up as a tiny sapient ungulate.

i remember seeing some of the TSU art six months ago and being like, vaguely creeped out by the faces. but since then ive fallen down a personal rabbithole of studying horse anatomy and working hard on my art, and also tangling my gender identity up with my deep seated loving fixation on mlpfim. now all i can see is like, beautiful little horses that are almost perfectly what i have been trying to construct in my head as like, what a my little pony would look like irl. bc if you know anything about the show you know that just having them be irl ponies wouldnt work. these horses can play instruments, you cant do that with normal hooves.

ugh. im not sure what to do. the like, feeling inside of wanting to be a my little pony is like, almost too much sometimes. its like the same feeling as being closeted and trans again. but i cant actually like, transmogrify into a mlp or a tsu. i need to like, chill. before this turns into some kind of body dysmorphia or something. idk maybe thats not gonna happen. i just worry. i dont want to start looking in the mirror at the body i have and hating it like i did when i was a teenager. bc i cant turn into a horse. as much as i want to, as much as i can like, style myself subtly to be horsier. i cant be a horse. and i dont want to set myself up for pain by leaning too hard on this to cope. and giving myself body dysmorphia or something similar. its okay that im human.

its so complicated to be told my whole life im not welcome in any group. and then as an adult lose a lot of my connection to the trans and queer communities thru trauma and like, accidental feedback from my peers telling me again that im not welcome bc im disabled and have trauma. or bc im not comfortable with words like f****y. i have been told over and over again that im not welcome by so much of society that im like. i dont feel like im human. i feel like im a monster. not in a horrible i hate myself way. just like. if humans keep telling me im not welcome then maybe ill embrace it and be a monster, and thats something thats been bubbling in me for years and years.

but now this mlp thing. ive rediscovered mlp. it has filled a hole in me. it has buoyed me and become my muse and allowed me to start the process of reclaiming my life and building things for myself. its this font of great things for me. but im worried im leaning too much on it to cope with the new stresses in my life.

im hurting and overwhelmed and that is turning into an intense yearning to be a my little pony in equestria. so bad some days it actually hurts. which makes me think maybe the coping mechanism is breaking down and i need to re-evaluate things.

HI!!!!! Phantom is literally going to go kerblooey if there is any more studying done tonight so I'm gonna talk about toh for a lil bit.

UHHHHH I don't really have many thoughts nor are they coherent but I will do what I do best and talk. Under the cut bc its probably gonna be spoilers

Ok so this has turned into me ranting about world building and character design more than the actual plot of the story itself. Sorry I'm a writer.

anyhoo my first order of business is one of my favorite favorite things about the animation in the owl house is the fact that there is a lot of variety in the way the characters blush. Like this was such an innocuous thing to notice that I somehow did. And I realize I don't think I've EVER seen that in another animated show.

like Hunter blushes to his ears (which was the main reason I noticed that bc I realized that no other character's ears get all red like his does)

Amity blushes with her entire face and Luz blushes just the bridge of her nose and cheeks. Like that's such a small detail but I am so obsessed with it because it's so cool and it's something I've never seen before.

ironically enough, I think that the first thing that dissuaded me from watching the Owl house before I watched it was that I wasn't a big of a fan of the surface level animation style but I do really really like the animation now that I've watched it, and the designs for creatures are so so so SO cool like I kjhkb,mxbn UGH.

Belos' monster design thingy idk that's just so cool just the way he looks and how he's animated is so intimidating and I think it's crazy cool. And I think it's also really creative which is a thing that I love a lot about this type of casual slightly modern fantasy is just the way that things are translated from modern real life into the world which is something that can often be done really awkwardly.

The ravens and the scrolls things are really cool and I like that, I also like the added thing of social media which isn't usually something I like in shows and stuff but I thought that was really neat.

SORRY THE THOUGHT TRAIN SWERVED THE WHOLE WORLD BUILDING THAT THEY'RE LIVING ON THE DEAD BODY OF A TITAN IS SO COOL I LOVE THAT. In the world of one of my new stories that I've just started working on, it's sort of similar to that in the way that people on the surface live off of the bodies of dead gods like living inside them and feasting on the flesh and stuff like using the dead gods all the way through (in a way that people from the floating islands would think is sacrilegious). I didn't really get that from the owl house because I just noticed that connection right now but GOD THATS SO COOL. I hhh *fans face*

The way magic works is also super cool and like honestly, I think the coven system is also really cool, not the whole having to only chose one magic track part of it but the different sections of magic that you can do. Like all the different types is really cool to me and I don't really consume much fantasy media of this type with heavy reliance on magic systems but this is one of my favorite magic systems.

I think the bard magic is really cool and GOD THE GLYPHS THATS SO COOL THE WAY THAT WORKS. Like it's such a wonderful mix of just hjkljhflkjhjbnvclkjhlskufg. I think it's very cleaver the way that they did that, especially with the glyphs and stuff being hidden around in nature. That's something that's very very cool and also very smart. Like in my mind, in the way my mind works that makes incredible sense. Like enough sense that you could tell me that in real life and I'd be like (yeah sure). It's like molecule shapes and stuff idfk.

Also the harpy Eda (is that what they called it I remember them calling it that) in season 2 was GOD so cool, just the way she looked in that form was so awesomely designed. Also just the whole Owl Lady thing, listen I am a sucker for wings and bird like characters (I would have more feathered winged OCs if feathered wings weren't a pain in my behind to draw). Eda is feathery and sharp with claws and teeth and by god is she so incredibly cool.

Ok I'm going back to hunter because I've been thinking about him all day, I think the fact that he has a tooth gap is really neat, I don't recall seeing that often in characters and I think it's really neat. He looks very disheveled all the time, especially in the later episodes of the season where he is literally one inconvenience away from a panic attack at every moment. But he really just LOOKS like a mussed up kid.

Also I believe that witch ears, they are pointy, they can flick and move and you can pry those headcanons out of my cold dead hands for all I care. I think they deserve to move like that. (I assume you know how I write Gillion, I love those kind of small motions like ears flicking and stuff like that)

also x2 I really like King's design as well, the whole skull for head thing is so cool to me and it's something that I really really like in design. I've had characters like that and I've had characters that wear skull masks and I don't think I will ever tire of characters like that. Even the titan hunters who even though it was just a costume I thought their outfits looked really cool and also really awesome how all the skulls and stuff were different and unique. It's just so charming to me and so cute how King looks with his skull and his horns, it's just one of those character design things that I really really love.

Ok I'm done for now I need to stop before this goes on for like way longer than it needs to. I don't think I have said a word about any of the plot or lore that happened. I have been rambling about world building and character design for a good half an hour that it's taken me to type out this response. Oops.

i wish i could better articulate my own personal obsession and connection to rothko but its insaaane. i tried to replicate his style and started painting with no training just so I could make pieces like his and i would study his colors and forms and obsess over them and I did that for years during some of the most mental illness parts of my life whilst dealing with hard drug abuse and homelessness and during some of the most formative times of my life and through all of it I had this connection with rothko and a lot of mid 20th century abstract expressionists and mysticists that helped me understand what I was going through in deeply human ways .. but I’m relapsing tonight so thats why im getting sentimental I literally might’ve made this exact post word for word last relapse but i digress.. i got a free beer at work and stopped to get a nice bottle of sav blanc (15$ [from new zealand of course]) i only got it bcuz my bf is doing work at a farm for a couple of days but Im trying to get better at being sober when im alone bcuz hes such a crutch for my sobriety omg idk.. my relapses are getting less extreme which I think is a good sign I’ve worn past that point where drinking any alcohol at all with spiral me into self hate and binge drinking for a week or whatever but i still that know complete abstinence is the only way forward and im working on that ..

HEYY ABSOLUTELY NO CALLING YOURSELF STUPID ON MY WATCH. Absolutely fucking not. Struggling is not being stupid. Not knowing is not being stupid. Let’s change that internal dialogue. “I struggle with studying” is okay. “I feel embarrassed that I can’t do this” is okay. Giving yourself a negative ultimatum about who you are is not.

Okay, now to the tips!!!

So, I wouldn’t go about pages/hour. There are a million factors that influence how fast you can do a reading. Some that are related to the reading (is it dense? Do you have to take notes?) and some to who you are (I read much faster than my mom but she is just as smart). So, I’d go by pages and take whatever time you need to take.

I have a little to do list for every day I study. Thats all I will do. I try to make it balanced but if it takes me less time then great! Go home earlier. If it takes me more then thats the deal. I usually alternate classes every 2 cycles (see below) so I am not bored. This helps you not slack off too.

For paying attention, you gotta figure out your attention span window. Here is how I did it. I started with 1h alarms. Then I’d take note of when I had the urge to go on my phone. I noticed that my attention window without breaks is around 45 mins. So thats the cycle I study in. 45 min, w 15 min breaks. It’s a deal I make with myself: it’s a long break because the other 45 mins are non stop work. You can start with 30 mins alarms if you think you have a shorter span.

For setting goals, I think thats a really personal style think that I am not much help. My entire brain is wired like a video game. Plan task. Do task. Get reward. Reset. Thats just my default so I don’t really get the struggle w creating goals. Creating goals is all I do lmao. But I think one thing to remember is that nothing that is cool in life happens without some planning. Like Harry talking to me (which was luck) only happened because I planned months in advance to get a job to stay in the city during the summer but one that I could travel around, picked exactly what concert I was going to buy the expensive ticket, figured how early I would get there, what I would wear, and what my poster would say. I only have the job I have because 5.5 years (!!!) before my full time starting date I started a long term plan to make that happen. Thats just how my life has always been. If I want something to happen, I start very early. Then people call me lucky (which I am too) without really looking behind the curtain at the years of effort something took.
