2 傷んだ上から蓋をして いたんだうえからふたをして itanda ue kara futa wo shite and covered up their pain from above. (Note: The official translation of the above two lines is: "You pretended not to see those you couldn't protect and swept their pain under the rug.")

Here the word is not in quotes, so it should mean what the word mukosei normally means in Japanese: "a lack of personality/individuality." I think here the word may be intended to refer to the other kid with the long fingers who also follows Katsuki around.)

12-13 その奥には等しく人の心があるのだと そのおくにはひとしくひとのこころがあるのだと sono oku ni wa hitoshiku hito no kokoro ga aru no da to he is one who [believes that] deep down people have the same* hearts. *(Note: This sentence is awkward to write out in English because the word "same" is actually an adverb in Japanese, like "similarly, equally." It means something like "All people are equal in that they similarly have human hearts.")

14-15 信じたいのだ しんじたいのだ shinjitai no da He is one who wants to trust*. *(Note: This word could also be translated as "wants to believe [in others].") (Update: I now believe this line should be translated as "He is one in whom I want to believe. Please see here for a bit more detail.)

So normally we only get fullblown, extended and dedicated flashbacks for heroic characters in One Piece, the characters who we're meant to root for. The literal only TRUE exception we've had to this rule was Big Mom's flashback. Even fucking Doflamingo's flashback was tied to Law and Rosinante's

So the fact that we haven't gotten a single fucking GLIMPSE at Crocodile's backstory is?!?

Like sure, we haven't gotten like a Moria flashback, but you know, he literally told us all we needed to know himself, AND we got to see glimpses of him in the Wano flashbacks. Arlong didn't get a flashback of his own, but he did get to cameo in Fisher Tiger's flashback. And Rob Fucking Lucci got a flashback that was 6 whooping panels long

BUT CROCODILE?? Not only do we know almost Fuck All about his story, but also have never gotten as much as a glimpse at it? But his backstory has been HINTED and TEASED at multiple times??

I am SURE the "Full Backstories for Heroes Only" rule is going to get broken again, but with Imu and Blackbeard already there just BEGGING to have their beans spilled, can we even be sure Sir Fucking Crocodile is somehow going to become A Villain So Dangerous To The Narrative that he ALSO should also recieve a Full Fucking Backstory?? So, I know that most of us would agree that Fitz isn't actually "overrated" because a lot of the fandom dislikes him. But I always find the perception that he's overrated interesting because it plays so much into his character. His entire character is about chasing perfection, about trying to be the perfect elf.

But more than that, I think it's wild to call him overrated when so few people actually understand his character and how critical it is to the story.

Fitz's character is about privilege. It's about being raised to believe in systems, and it's about how systems of oppression hurt even those who are most privileged. He thinks that he can have control; he was told that he would have control. And he's angry because he's realized that he doesn't have control, that society isn't the way he was told it was, and that the way it is is bad.

In fact, all of the characters play a role in the story that relates to privilege and being a part of a corrupt society. Marella plays a victim of ability-related oppression; Sophie plays someone who was born outside the system and can see its flaws more clearly; Tam and Linh play victims of twin-related oppression and show how parents' bias is particularly harmful. Keefe and Fitz are especially interesting because they play complementary characters. They show how two different people could be born privileged, benefiting extremely from systems, and still be victims of it. Keefe is a victim because he doesn't want to participate in it, and Fitz is a victim because he falls for the system and has to unlearn his whole bad belief system.

Fitz's character is akin to every one of us who grew up believing we lived in a good world and then realized we didn't. Fitz is those of us who realized that we didn't have the control we thought we did, those of us who had to unlearn our biases, and those of us who were mad about that.

It's wild just how twisted around his character gets, when I think he should be one of the most relatable characters to Gen Z! Like, I know this is a whole lot of theming and allegory and symbolism packed into a series that jokes about butts, but that's part of the brilliance. KotLC takes these complex concepts about society and oppression and brings them into a story that an eight-year-old can understand. And I think that's a big reason so many of us are attached to the series despite our age—it's so much deeper than it looks on the surface level. There's always something more to uncover.

I love this series. I love Fitz. And I really think that dismissing his character as "the worse love interest" (same with Keefe's character!) means that you will never understand the series in the slightest.

Why does aziraphale tells crowley he forgives him??? I literally just finished it and its driving me insane

hello anon! hope you're doing okay after that ending!

that's a hell of a question. there are a few different answers, and i think a lot was going on in aziraphale's head at that particular moment, but this is what I took from it:

-this is a dance aziraphale and crowley have been doing for a long time.

there's some sort of moral conflict. aziraphale repeats heaven's party line. crowley asks a bunch of uncomfortable questions. aziraphale doubles down. crowley calls him an idiot. aziraphale forgives him. crowley storms away. pretty much half of their relationship is built on these kinds of destructive patterns at this point--of course they'd fall back into it during the worst fight they've ever had.

-aziraphale is angry.

he's heartbroken, and he doesn't understand why crowley has decided to abandon him in what should be (from his perspective) the happiest moment of their lives since the fall. he's lashing out, and intentionally hurting crowley in the same way he's been hurt. he's not stupid, no matter how much miscommunication is happening in this scene--telling someone "i forgive you" after they've kissed you is going to hurt, and he knows that.

this reading comes mostly from michael's performance. several people have noted that in the moments immediately after the kiss, aziraphale says "I l--" and then cuts himself off. then he goes on a Michael Sheen Face Journey TM and ends up angry, and that's when we get "I forgive you." whatever else is going on with aziraphale in this moment, he's pissed.

-forgiveness is what aziraphale does.

in aziraphale's very first (modern day) scene of the season, we learn that forgiveness is "one of his favorite things." he forgives maggie's rent, and he forgives gabriel enough to shelter him from heaven and hell while he's vulnerable. it's an instinct for aziraphale, for better or worse, whether it's because it's something he thinks he SHOULD do or something intrinsic to him as a person who desperately wants to do good. occasionally, it's even something he does for his own gain. Kana and Ruby were desperate to be seen by Aqua/Goro. Meanwhile, Akane sought to see—understand—the real Aqua.

Aqua shines the spotlight on Kana to save her from her bad habits. He does the same for Ruby, freeing her from her burden.

The manga puts a lot of emphasis on the way Goro was Ruby's light, on the way Aqua brought out Kana's radiance. We're shown that Sarina wants to marry him, that Kana wanted to be his idol. Despite this, neither is privy to the burden Aqua is carrying.

With Aqua and Akane, the manga paints a different picture: It actually allows Akane to get involved. Aqua saved her life and ever since she has been doing her best to save his heart in turn.

What's more: Goro has been saving people all along, but Akane is the one the manga has actively taking mesures to return the favor.

Re-reading TLH has really put it into perspective how flat fanon!Leo is in comparison to canon!Leo. Fanon!Leo is often relegated to the comic relief role, and I feel that by squeezing him into that archetype, people are missing the point of his character.

In TLH, Leo makes it explicitly clear in his narration that he uses humour as a defence mechanism. He feels that people are less inclined to pick on him and more inclined to like him if he's cracking jokes all the time, plus it allows him to keep other people at a distance. Nobody's going to make him open up about his problems if they think he's always in a good mood.

We see this over and over again throughout TLH. There is a stark difference between Leo's (mostly) light-hearted dialogue and his troubled inner thoughts. Leo is always stressed about something - how his fire might hurt the people he cares about, the abuse he faced from his aunts/babysitters as a child, how Piper and Jason won't want him around anymore if they start dating for real, how he will never get a girlfriend, etc - but he very rarely expresses any of that out loud. Instead, he cracks a joke, flashes a smile, and pretends that nothing is wrong.

Leo's humour is a mask he wears to hide how he really feels. Leo as a character is someone who is deeply insecure, has severe trust issues, and who struggles to open up to people about his problems. He uses his humour as a method for making friends while maintaining a comfortable level of distance between them because he's terrified to let other people in past his walls.

Leo IS funny! Jason remarks on a few different occasions that he's glad to have Leo around because he keeps things light! But to reduce Leo's character to someone who is just funny is missing the whole picture, and results in reducing a complex character into a flat comic relief archetype.

i feel like dick's "no-kill rule" could have so many different interpretations because of contrasting characterisations upon his many years of comics where people could argue that he has taken in bruce's "no-kill rule" for himself due to his intense loyalty to bruce but when it comes down to his own thoughts and feelings, he can, will, and has killed or that he also has his own deep devotion to that "no-kill rule" (because of his own backstory or because of bruce) and he would never kill, and both would be correct.

Just wanted to ask your thoughts on Eddie saying "this doesn't change a thing between us" because usually when I hear that line and I've watched a lot of TV, it's usually bullshit and in fact everything will change between them. Also bonus points that this line is almost always said by canon/endgame couples.

As a lot of people pointed out I think it's an obvious red herring and foreshadowing.

I think it has two meanings.

1.) "this doesn't change a thing between us" meaning "you being queer is not an issue for me and not only do I continue to love and accept you as a person whole-heartedly, but something like that could never even come close to cracking the bond we've built between us. And queerness in general is never something that could be an issue period."

This meaning I agree is true. The core of their friendship will not change.

But...the second meaning:

2.) "this doesn't change a thing between us" meaning "our relationship to each other won't change" is what I believe will be challenged. Because maybe on the surface their "friendship" won't change, but this line has to mean that something will change at some point, and will likely have something to do with Buck's queerness. Given that I'm 99% sure they're not gonna have Eddie suddenly be homophobic (for real), that has to mean something else will change in their relationship. But what? Time will tell.
